A lot of good work in this thread. I converted this piece because I wasn't sold on the new Stardrake and I've always wanted to paint up the Empire Griffin. The base has since been completed, but I am going back and working on the armor a little more.

Paradigm wrote:Holy smeg, that is an awesome idea! How hard was it to get what looks like the starter set Celestant on the Griffon?
Not as hard as you'd think. I used parts of the Celestant's saddle and then connected it to the griffon using some sprue that I pinned in place. I then green stuffed it so it looked like a continuous metal piece. The lower legs are taken from the Retributor Prime from the starter set - I bought two sets, so the other two are now part of a five man unit. The hardest part was getting everything positioned so if looked right.

@MongooseMatt - I can relate. I don't like to spend too much time basing and I use the same formula for pretty much all my armies. It looks like you are using tufts of grass - if you did want to change it up, you could always just add a static grass that was a slightly different shade rather than rebase everything from scratch. Cover the base to varying degrees, that way you could leave some as they are and cut down on your work. I've also seen people paint random objects like broken swords and skulls in quick batches - small stuff that can just be glued to the top of the current base work. A few strategic sprinkles of static grass around the object help blend it into the base.
Then again, 1250 models is staggering, and my friends and I have a saying, "Done is beautiful."
As an aside, let me also say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog. Your reviews are insightful and I like the narrative flair you give your battle reports. I am also staggered by how fast you are able to produce well painted models, which adds a lot to your battle reports. Your paint-fu is strong. Keep up the good work!

Oh thank you, those bases will get finished with some ice hanging over the rocky edges (by using a candle and a flying stand), so the snow is actually placed with that future addition in mind as well.

It's a mix of mostly PVA with sodium bicarb salt in it (some use baking powder, but that can turn yellow over time.. so I use the pure salt without starch in it), a bit of water and white paint added into it. It gets nice and goopy, allowing you to stack it on rather thickly.

I've just figured out a cheap way to maximize my black knight box a bit.
I still have a ton of leftover 40k cultists from the starter box... So I decided to cut them in half and glue their legs to the torsos of hexwraith knights.
Guess it's a cheap way to add some cairn wraiths to your force. The legs do look a bit bulky, but not too horrible. So yeah... cheap way to max out a box.
Should anybody know of a better set of legs to pair with these torsos, feel free to share...

Time for me to change. I have become a miserable old fart at 47. You would have think I would have become better being in the hobby for so long, but this is what happens kids when you give up. Well now it stops for me. I will keep continuing no matter how bad my minis look compared to the awesome work here. I have been miserable for too long and that will change. Sorry if my work is not as good as a lot of people here but I want to be part of the community again instead of arguing with a lot of people. For that I am sorry.
So for now, here is my gang. Finally starting and not giving up anymore. I might be slow, but at least it's coming along now.

Due to a mistake with packaging of my start collecting box (problem with the mortarch), GW instantly sent a second box to compensate (including ALL the other boxes too, so I basically got double troops).

Just a single flash unit in slave mode to my camera (an old "high end compact), the Fuji X-10. It does allow full manual control. This is just done with natural light from a window, with a fill in flash from the opposing side to compensate.
The background is from Corvus' miniatures blogspot, a RL friend of mine.

Those are some really nice spooky skeletons, only thing that seemed odd to me was the eyes but I'm used to the kind of crazy super glow eyes if the eyes are glowing anyway so don't mind that.
As for my dark pictures I managed to get some while at GW today after just finishing my treelord the night before.
Lost to lizards again, but I figure when I figure out how to deal with a bastiladon I've figured out how to deal with monsters. Hopefully the hunters will help with that a little, though I don't expect them to perform miracles.

I used the Oxide paint on my Skellies, worked out well!
32159
Post by: jonolikespie
In small doses I like the oxide look, but I don't like seeing people drown half a model with it like it were a wash
A dust/dirt pigment around the feet would work nice as well. I can't remember trying the GW rust effect but on my old skellies I has just a watered down brown that went over the metals followed by a very watered down orange. They took the shine off so the metals appeared duller, dirtier, and starting to rust. A quick drybrush along the cutting edges of the weapons then makes them look like they have seen use again.
Everyone focuses a lot on the metals when weathering but the shield is a perfect spot for it, if not weathering powders then I'd grab a Tamyia red (or GW's blood effect) and brown (or any brown ink), mix them together, and splatter on some very old dried blood.
*Edit*
Oh god I found an imagine of one of my skeletons from waaaay back when I was playing them. This was like... 4 years ago now.
I need some eye bleach...

So after not picking up a paintbrush for 4 months (thanks a lot uni..) I have something worth showing off.
I've got a ton of beautiful Dark Elves coming from the Raging Heroes Kickstarter and decided to test a scheme for them on a model I had laying around. There are a couple of parts of it that I kinda look at and think ' ew, no, this needs to be fixed' but for an evenings work after a break I'm amazed it turned out as well as it did.
I think it's also like my second time trying to freehand banner work. Funnily enough the last time I did it was also for Dark elves about 4 years ago, alongside that crappy wight king:

First of the Sylvaneth all painted up, just needs varnished after that flock in the base fully dries. Did one the things where other than the base and eyes, the model is painted entirely in one single color base coat, in this case bone, and then different washes are used to color it.
The eyes I used as a first test bed for GW’s new gem glazes, and painted them the new metallic silver with a single thick coat of the blue gem. They’re tiny, but they look nice, and I’ll definitely have to play with these colors more to try out some different effects.

Got all my Sylva assembled
was looking to make them winter themed
Anyone know a quick way to do it?
I was thinking prime white and do lots of washes, but not sure what washes would work to capture winter?
101420
Post by: Haechi
I think the best way to do winter is to remove all the leaves, paint the bark very dark, and have snow on the base and even maybe some parts of the minis.
67795
Post by: RexHavoc
Not sure if they still sell it or not, but the painting wood elves guide GW put out a couple of years back was really good, and it had guides for painting wood elves and trees for all seasons.
The winter dryads looked great and it what I will base mine off when I get around to them.
They were mostly done with a lot of dry brushing, rather than washing, but I could stick the list of colours they used up if you like.
I will be leaving the leaves on, but doing them rather dark, but mysterious/fantasy colours, but leaving them off is a good option. I'm choosing to paint them as will bring a lot of colour to them- so they look less out of place going up against my night goblins-which though are in black, are very bright and cartoony.

Started to work on them. The plan was to do Winter....when turned into fall. Not sure how but sticking with it. I have about 80 more to do..
Base of Army painter white (which is horrible. I will never buy them again. Paint dried dusty, some came off, and left a white dust all over desk, plus it looks grainy. Which for trees isn't bad but id prefer smooth)
Then I washed them all in Seraphim Sepia
Then a wash of either Casandora Yellow, Fuegan Orange, or Blood letter glaze
Green eyes with a little highlight. Leaves alternated dependent on their base so it was different.
what would be a fast but good way to base them for the fall?
101420
Post by: Haechi
What would look amazing for a fall sylvaneth army basing would be to have the ground covered in dead leaves. I don't know how to make it, but it would look fantastic.

Just would look around at places that sell stuff for model railways, they'd be likely to have something like a dead leaf flock I'd think.

I've decided to make a start on my dark aelves as my first aos army. Here is a wip/mockup of a cold one chariot.
I've decided to go with a city under siege look, however i found it was easy for the base to look very bland with just greys. I've tried injecting some colour with the blue tiles, corpses, blood and some osl. The osl seems heavy handed in the photos but i can assure you in real life the colours aren't as saturated.

Unfortunitly i agree, theres no definition, the base is nice but the rest is just powery dusty smear of colour. Very beautiful colour but that may be its just a base coat. Maybe once all the details are filled in and edges are highlighted it will pull it together.

Very cool Voodoo/Uruk Hai vibe there. A horde done up that way would look really striking.
Segmenting the face paint to more closely mirror the facial bone structure the way the rest of the figure has might look even better.

Yes, as someone who sprays 90% in White and occasionally in black - I will say you need to hold the white can closer to the model than you would a black can.

Those are very cool indeed, where are the spiders from? Storm of Sigmar arrived this morning, so a couple of test paints: Stormcast of the Knights Vitae Chamber, in marble armour and carrying weapons infused with the power of the Realm of Life: And a Blood Warrior Champion, my aim here being to use minimal red a) as red Gorechosen are ten a penny and b) hats aside, I can pass them off as generic barbarians ect in other settings and games, or add some Slaves to Darkness down the line that don't need to be Khornate: Any thoughts welcome!

Not the greatest photo, but quite possibly my greatest achievement with painting. This may have been the quickest mini I have ever gone from buying to painting to finishing in 20+ years of hobbying. From buying on Thursday to painting last night and basing him today. Most of my minis from the 1990s are still waiting to be painted!
Was ok with the paint job until I tried to go to the next level with it and add some glazes (copying from the Warhammer TV Nagash guide) and felt it ruined the ghostly effect (the citadel glazes are a lot stronger than they used to be!) by giving it a cartoony glow. Saved it the best I could and hope that it wont be too noticeable (other than on the ghost face on the top right!) when I do the other two and I skip over the extra steps.
Meant to be painting more goblins ( I have about 400 hundred waiting to be finally done) but I couldn't resist a death box to paint up- especially as my other half is getting quite a large number of trees next week to go with her wood elves back log I'm still too paint! (not too mention all the scenery shes brought I'm still to paint as well!)

Nice job there Rex. That mini made me almost pull my hair out. Had a hard time gluing that baby together. Once painted, I am happy with what I did as well. I am hoping the other 2 will be easier to put together. Right now, I but that box set on hold now because how frustrating it was for me to do.
Looking forward to see more of your army.

Thanks! Yeah, tell me about it. I wouldn't suffer spirit host building on my worst enemy! They are horrid to put together! I'm actually going to start work on the mortis engine first, just to skip having to put together another one so soon! I'd kept thinking I must have cut the connector tags off parts of the mini!

Have the Gorechosen game set to notify when it is back in stock. Purchased Silver Tower for 20% discount at a con this weekend.
The thought occurs: At some point, I actually need to paint this stuff.

I'm actually contemplating expanding the Khorne lot myself. Initially, I wanted them just to paint up and use as a warband in assorted skirmish games, but they were good fun to paint and I don't usually play 'bad guy' forces, so it might be a nice change of pace. I was going to get the Start Collecting Stormcast box next, but I might just upgrade to the main starter set instead...

So I used Vlagorescu's horde to make 6 crypt horrors, a crypt haunter courtier and a crypt infernal courtier. Sadly, this left me with 1 leftover crypt horror that really isn't ideal for matched play. So I tried my hand at sculpting some furr and turn the last model into an alternate Varghulf courtier.
I also added a bone tail with fur to him, to at least try to make him resemble the original varghulf model a bit more (also the reason for the "quad wings" with 2 smaller ones, like the original varghulf has). A bit of metal wire and miliput also spread the wings out a bit to repose him slightly, giving him a more imposing stance.
Also, I took a picture of the overview of the army. Just the crypt ghouls left and they are almost done!

Yea, there is a good use for the old squares after all.
Now that Ogors ( lol) are getting updates, I will have to rebase that army. Thankfully, they never made it onto the bases, so I get to find creative ways to cut my squares and glue the tops onto new rounds.

I am almost finished with my stardrake, and I'm on the wings right now. By far the hardest part of the model. I wet blended from a purple to a red, and now I'm trying to keep that clean as I paint the spines between the membranes..... maddeningly slow. A WIP picture from earlier this week.
I also worked on magnetizing the rider a bunch (you can see the templar's body can be switched in in the picture above), and the chair is also magnetized.

I just started out with AoS (have yet to play a game) by buying the King Vlagorescu's Ghoulish Host box for Flesh Eater Courts. I finished my first unit, 3 Crypt Horrors, today. Overall I'm pretty happy with how they turned out: I paint in a very dark, gritty style reminiscent of Historical wargaming in part because I don't like bright/clean looks (except on Space Marines haha) and in part because I'm lazy so I like to use a lot of washes and drybrushing. Brief rundown is that I basecoated with Rakarth Flesh, washed with Reikland Fleshshade to make it look more human with a ruddy color, then gave a heavy drybrush with Rakarth Flesh followed by Rakarth Flesh with a little Army Painter Necrotic Flesh to bring back that "not quite human" look. This was also my first time trying out the Blood for the Blood God paint and holy crap it's amazing.

When making a base, I always think that a base should tell a story as much as the miniature. Of course when I'm cranking out an entire army my bases are typically minimal (my bloodbound army's bases are sand painted over black to look like scorched earth, very quick and easy).
For this one I figured she was walking through a reclaimed area that could have at one time been home to an industrious civilization. Maybe duardin. The cogs are remnants of that time.

Finished the army today:
I really like the wing effect, when painting I noticed that the red wash on a splotchy greenish base gave a sort of pinkish-greenish-grey I can best describe as "spoiled meat" which, ironically, is exactly the effect I wanted. Overall I am really happy with the human-like color palette I used, because I feel it really highlights the fluff that these are (were?) humans that have degenerated into monsters. Plus, the dark color scheme makes them look sinister and disturbing (the copious amounts of Blood for the Blood God paint helps with this!).

And some Grave Guard to go with them.
A Wight King on Skeletal Steed to lead them.

My Khorne start collecting box, Lord on Juggie and and big AOS starter box (for more khorne heroes and monster) plus new GW bases arrived the other day.
I have almost finished the Khorne from the little Storm of Sigmar set I bought the other week. I think that means I'm averaging less than 1 model per day, probably closer to 1 every 2 days :(
Like the blood warriors, but they have a lot of detail so are not quick to paint. Blood reavers just look daunting due to numbers (and lots of flesh, which I always find awkward). First mental hurdle to overcome is actually cutting out and making all those new models.
Can't make my mind up about the new bases. they are sort of nice, but struggling to come up with a paint scheme for them. Also you get far too many bases that are not wanted - only 30 * 32mm but 40 * 25mm, which might be nice for gobbos or skaven. Would have preferred buying each size separately.

Treelord Ancient
Treelord
2 Branchwychs
48 Dryads
12 Kurnoth Hunters
10 Tree Revanents
I will need to build and/or paint
6 Kurnoth Hunters
16 Dryads
Alarielle ( whos almost finished )
Branchwraith
I'll probably end up getting another another start collecting box to give me 80 dryads in total, another Branchwych, a regular treelord and another ancient. That way I can do the last march of the Ents.
But yeah I am really happy with the quick progress I have made with this project.

These are the finecast ones and while infinitely better than metal ( imo) they're still a pain in the arse to prep and paint. That said they are amazing looking models and total killing machines on the battlefield

+1 for this being an awesome thread. Even for non-AoS players, the hobbying being displayed here is amazing to follow

See you're hopping onboard the Morngul filth train, eh, Matt ;-)
Haha, just kidding. Have you used one in a game yet? They are nasty.

Not yet - was debating about taking one to the GW event this weekend, but will probably go with Stormcasts instead.

After painting tenebrael shard I've been inspired to redo my ,island of blood, elves in a similar paint scheme. They were the first miniatures I ever painted, can't wait to see how they turn out since I know how to properly apply primer and wash now.
I'm using LA awesome to strip them.
What do I do if I cant get all the paint out of the nooks and crannies? Can I primer over it?

yeah, scrub em with a paint brush, wash em and then reprimer them.

Either way I hope you have a great time. I'm gonna have to see how I can get myself one of those exclusive Stormcast figs.

Love the drow scheme. I had always wanted to do this previously but in the old world it seemed out of place. Perfect for AoS!

I use 90% isopropyl alcohol to strip models, it works in about 15 min. I have problems with paint in the "nooks and crannies"' too, I normally just prime over it. I'll hopefully get some photos of my Sylvaneth-Themed Eternal Guard up today...

Red probably works better for stormcast than some of the khorne things I think.
Finally got around to properly starting off death and with a necromancer to lead my planned 1k list as well. Going with an overly pompous sounding name to suit the base model I used; Lord Valinarus Galaron, The Undying.

I have gotten into converting my Bloodbound in earnest.
I started with 4 copies of the boxed set and I need 2 more Flesh hounds to finish out my unit! Exalted Deathbringer with shield, Fleshhounds and bloodreaver banner.
Here's the whole horde minus the Skullcrushers and Valkyra.

WIP for my newest unit:
After destroying a fireslayers army and plundering all their urgold (Sigvald dislikes their stature), The Decadent Host has melted the precious gold into a 1:1 flawless statue of Prince Sigvald the Magnificent himself, and fashioned it atop his War Shrine.
Going to try and finish painting it this week.

Switched from working on Spiders to working on my Lahmian themed Death army the idea being to use Vampires, spirits and skeletons, theory is that they're the ones more easily "concealed" as an army (spirits banished, skeletons in a mausoleum).
Currently got another box of skeletons on order, as well as the Start Collecting Malignants set, the hexwraiths will be built as black knights, and the Mortis engine will be the Coven throne instead.
My own criticism so far:
- two of the spirit hosts have been highlighted a little too white.
- rim of bases need tidying up a little
- general tidying of some of the colours
But overall I'm very happy with how they're turning out. Aiming for 1000pts which the next set of minis will finish off.

Hi! Did a little bit of painting on my Death units.
First, I'll repost a unit of Spirit Hosts that I painted way back (see page 19), that was not received too well back then. Now have a better camera, so thought I'd take new pics with better lighting and see if the reaction is any different
I also painted a Banshee:
With finished base:
And finally some Skeletons:
Cheers!

Just don't let him get focused up on an he'll tear through an army. A bit more powerful than the RAW numbers indicate because of the battleshock bit but you probably have a good grip on what he does from your calculations.

Yeah pretty much point him in a direction and let him go lol. But his cost in points can be a drain if you don't point him correctly
