A delivery I've been waiting for for over a week has finally arrived. More dryads, spirit hosts and a Treeman. Plus a load of basing stuff. Had a quick play around last night, think I'm finally a bit happier with the basing now.
Hopefully over the weekend I'll get a bit more done.
Also wanting a whole load of GW terrain at the moment, but need to ease up on money going out.
puree wrote: A delivery I've been waiting for for over a week has finally arrived. More dryads, spirit hosts and a Treeman.
Excellent! I had six Minotaurs and a unit of Bestigors turn up today, but need to finish the Seraphon and some Khorne Juggers first!
Also scored some awesome converted Treekin on eBay recently. I am thinking they will not take too long to paint so can lump them in with something else...
When AoS came out, several players here bought starter boxes. But the interest has vanished since then.
I still have the content of starter box and some Chaos Knight and Mauraders on Steeds. We are trying to get into the SDK warscroll system atm. Maybe it will give AoS some boost in our gaming group. My models are still grey. I'll paint them if we get AoS going here.
I've got a bunch of extra Liberators from the starter set and am making grand hammer Libs with extra hammers from the Retributors in the starter.
I think eventually I'd like to get another paint scheme going on a new set of Stormcast. Something about the models have me wanting more and more and multiple factions of them. I'm hoping they go the space marine route and splinter a bit in the future.

I know exactly what you mean. I recently picked up a couple of units of Liberators cheap and have pegged them for a different Stormhost. Haven't settled on a paint scheme though...

I based my stormhost on my local college football team, with my celestant prime named after the team mascot. Also the hammer stormcast have home colors and the sword and spear stormcast are away colors.
That reminds me, I still have most of them to paint.

Incredible sculpting, Navarro!
Some of the painting in this thread is absolutely killer (not to mention prolific!). Particularly like those VC by Andreas 2.0
Red_Zeke wrote: @RiTides/Boss- Thanks for the kind words, as usual. I will be looking to get some kind of report out in 2016, haven't decided whether to make it a traditional battle report, or something else altogether.
My Start Collecting Seraphon box came in today, and that is a seriously intimidating amount of plastic to assemble - I think there's more than the AoS starter set, despite making only half as many figures. I'm eager to get started on them, but I'm curious whether or not I should wash them in soapy water first? Do you have to do that with plastic models, or just metal ones? I haven't washed any of my other models, and they seem fine, but now that I'm getting more serious about painting, I'm wondering if I should get more serious about preparation too?
Sqorgar, the models that you really should wash are (from my experience) just resin models, such as anything from Forgeworld, or Finecast.
To be honest, I've been using a lot of resin models for the last few years, and haven't washed them... but it's a very good idea to do so. What you're basically doing by this is removing any "mold release agent" that is sprayed on the silicone mold to make the resin parts easier to remove. This release agent also makes it hard for paint to stick to the model.
The only models I've really had to be careful about washing are Trollcast models from Trollforged. I haven't actually gotten any Forgeworld models painted, but I have a few and some of them do seem like they could really use washing, too.
But for plastic or metal, it isn't necessary at all, imo.
Awesome. Thanks guys. Time to start building some lizards...
(I did have some issues with primer sticking to some Warmachine plastic models - rubbed off to the touch, but it might also have been a bad can of primer)
@Bottle: Thanks and yes I'll do both cute eyes lol. Amazing how one can miss stuff on a model this big and as detailed. Will give it a another once over once the other two brothers are done.
@Navarro: Thanks,base is one it comes with,a 130mm round.
Looking some more I think I'll change the colour of the Nurgle symbol on the loin cloth(?) at the back.Too samey, purple might work better.
You know how you can sometimes get models 'stuck' on your painting table, and they then go on to hold up other models from getting done? Yeah, I have that at the moment with two Stegadons. Hopefully will finally be able to shift the big lumps this weekend. However, I did manage to get some other chaps done - an Astrolith Bearer and a Razordon with Handlers!
MongooseMatt wrote: You know how you can sometimes get models 'stuck' on your painting table, and they then go on to hold up other models from getting done?
Tell me about it. I've got some Hexwraiths I have been working on since... October (!) currently holding up any more Death models getting done :-(
I should work on them this weekend some more!
The new models look absolutely great, Matt! Is it safe to assume the Lizardmen have become your favorite of your AoS armies?

Odd as it sounds, no! Getting pumped for the Fyreslayers right now, but want to get Beastmen done first (and then probably final Khorne bits, still haven't done any Skullcrushers).
Two bits of good news from my painting desk - first off, it looks like I have broken the back of the two Stegadons that were holding everything else up. Hoping to get them finished tonight or tomorrow night!
Second, I managed to complete this little lady for our forthcoming battles in the Realm of Life:
There's a fairly busy Tales of Sigmar page starting up on Feb. 1. About 25 signups so far and people have been posting their Month 0 stuff. A good follow or something some of the people in here could participate in too: http://talesofsigmar.blogspot.co.uk

Ok, I'll admit it, that got a laugh out of me, but with the amount of time I have spent complaining about AoS I'd be worried of bursting into flames if I tried putting him on the tabletop.
I didn't actually expect the dwarf there to get me any praise, but since he did how about a model I did paint waaaaaaay back the week AoS came out for a local GW speed painting comp (the idea was the box is released saturday morning, the comp was judged sunday evening).
Spoiler:
(spoilered for size)
And alongside those the one I lost to (my roomate's model).
Spoiler:
He handled his metal a LOT better than me, but I'm convinced the deciding factor was his freehand on the plinth.

If the deciding factor was the freehand then... I wouldn't say it was a fair call. I find yours much better, especially the flesh bits. The only things that I'd say need some working speed painting would be the gold areas. Did you wash the horns?
Huh. The skin on your model is EXCELLENT! That does not look like a rush job at all. Mind sharing the recipe? I really need some skin tips... Don't tell your room mate, but your model is much better painted than his, although that freehand is very cool.

I don't really have a recipe I can share but I can tell you the paints were the Scale 75 skin set, can't recommend it enough. http://www.scale75.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=55_59_75&product_id=131 Iirc, it was a base of Indian shadow, airbrushed pink flesh from above, glazed on golden skin, then going back in with a light glaze of the indian shadow back into the depths and around the nipples and scars, then a highlight of light skin on the scars. There was probably a bit more back and forth with the glazing just to blend it in, but that was the rough idea to it.
Lithlandis Stormcrow wrote: The only things that I'd say need some working speed painting would be the gold areas. Did you wash the horns?
I think I washed the horns, it was a while ago, but I may have forgotten that part. The gold though I was pretty unhappy with.

That's interesting, seeing as that's the exact same paint set I use for my skin I don't get results that are nearly that good though. I follow the "light skin" tutorial in the little panflet that came with the box, but the end results never has enough contrast between light and shadow, and not enough tone variations. I'll make sure to try your recipe,.

To be honest, you wouldn't really need green stuff for that. Just hitting it with an emery board would be fine to conceal the joint.

Very much so. The 25mm bases used to annoy me as you could always guarantee that over time, the paint would rub off the feet of the models you were handling. These 32s make them fit very nicely with no overhang. Plus, those models in running poses can't tip over quite so easily (looking at you assault marines/chaos possessed)
Those Auric Runeguard are looking nice! I have started to paint up my first Fyreslayers today. No doubt Matt will have a whole lodge before they are finished ;-)
So, I was in such a crunch for painting time in the run up to Waaaghapaca that I literally did not have time take pictures as I went. Even this picture is from someone else at the event, but I promise to follow up with some individual shots. Here's the Slaanesh army I have been putting together for forever and a day, a pic taken from a distance that the army can be as cool or as awful as you care to imagine.
My painted Stormcast Eternals so far. Five more Liberators and my "small" army is complete (1000 points PPC). Then more Liberators, some Judicators w. bows, Protectors and some heroes. Pics not so good quality, bad lighting and old mobile phone)
Lord Celestant on Dracoth
Lord Relictor
Five Liberators
Five Retributors (only two showing, best pic I had)
Great job there Grimbok. I was going to make a thread on how I hate the gold on the Stormcasts, but you did a great job on them. I really like your minis.
So... my picture taking skills are not so hot. I guess I need a cheap tripod and lighting setup? Or mostly need some kind of tutorial, because I keep ending up with blurriness and all the blends washed out. Anyway, here's a few closer shots of the army. I took these ladies/men/lady-men to a 4 game single day, which I will try to oh-so-briefly write up. Maybe as a tactics/unit breakdown more than a game-by-game.
Grimbok... quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack! intentional or not they look like the Mighty Ducks of Sigmar. Great job though, the gold is especially nice.
RZ - Oh man, very cool to finally see the army! Albiet with slightly blurry pics
That last one (giant??) is freaking amazing, and somehow came out clear . The chariot conversion is also ace, just love it! Finally, really like the conversions on the troops, and am trying to figure out how to help you take a pic so we can see the paint jobs more
Looking forward to your tactics thoughts on the different units, too!
Thanks guys, much appreciated. I have a hero and two units that need to end up on rounds/ovals, but are otherwise done. I think I just need to get a little mini tripod so when I use the macro setting it doesn't blur from tiny movements.
Black undercoat spray
Retributor gold twice all over
Reikland fleshshade all over
Reikland fleshshade in deep areas again
Until this stage it is easy, standard og bigger brushes.
This is more tricky, needs to be neatly painted.
Highlight with retributor gold except for deep recesses
Auric gold edge highlight
Silver (mitril) on a few raised areas
The teal: kabalite green base color (two layers), coella greenshade on the cloth and along the recesses close to the gold, then highlighted with half/half kabalite/sybarite then a bit of sybarite on a few raised areas. But mostly just kabalite green.

WTF? Oh, I googled mighty ducks, I see your point . Those colors are really nice! Canadians, those hockey freaks...hehe
Sotek is a cool color too, but more bluish. Kabalite/sybarite are great colors, but there are many cyan/bluish colors that are great and somewhat underused I think. Very good on the Stormcasts. Perhaps not that good on my new wood elves, back to good old green and brownish colors.
Thats the main strength of Stormcasts, many different and cool paint schemes.

BRUH. Clearly that's a Cygor (and maybe a touch of irony that the one-eyed thing is in focus)

I finished the Stormcast Eternals side of my starter box, and also painted some Realmgates. Not as great work as some of the other projects in this thread, but I'm pleased with my results I am very relieved to be finished with the starter box lol.
I started playing AoS a couple months ago when someone mentioned I could use the Tzeentch Daemons I had for 40k but never used. I have enjoyed AoS a lot and playing somewhat regularly has also inspired me to crack in to painting some more of them. I run a purely Tzeentch list which has proven to be quite powerful even without any summoning...
So here is my Herald of Tzeentch which is a bit of a conversion with some parts from the Tzeentch Chariot kit, and a cluster of horrors:
Inspiring thread and keep up the great work everyone!

Now there is a coincidence - just finished some Pink Horrors myself (still looking for a cheap Herald):
Also did a Daemon Prince which I am less fond of:
And one more unit for my Seraphon which are now 'this' close to being 'done':
When can we expect some Fyreslayers from yourself?
I have my Berzerkers and Runesmith all put together and undercoated, but I am going to be diverted by Skaven for a short, as they are needed for the Realm of Metal campaign.
Was going to do the Fyreslayers for the Doubles later this month, but think I may go Seraphon instead. Or Stormcast. Really haven't decided...
I have the IoB Skaven, and hope to pick up a WLC or Doomwheel or two in the next few weeks (and loads of round bases!)
I want a black and white sort of look, and just have the eyes and warp forged/warp stone bits glowing purple. I recall seeing a VC army a few years ago done in a similar fashion, and thought that it looked pretty cool.
Would this be easy to do, and quick? I was thinking a black undercoat, Eshin grey base coat, a few heavy washes of Nuln Oil, then dry brush up with lighter greys? Perhaps a few other points of spot colour, like black weapon hafts/shafts/handles, metal or the odd bit of red cloth? Sin City style, I suppose. As you can see I'm not very confident of thsi approach, but time is a major factor and I just want this stuff painted up and on the table ASAP!
In preparation for when their rules finally come out:
And Monders, painting in shades is hard if you want stark contrasts. While spraying black and dry brushing dark grey/medium grey is easy. Just remember that Abbadon Black is deeper/blacker than Chaos Black.
I'm a big fan of this army, as accidental and speedy as it was for you Love the purple big guys and the masses of troops - really looked like one of the most balanced, "army like" forces I saw in the Throne coverage as well, which I appreciate a great deal. Definitely my favorite of your armies that I've seen so far.
Beautiful Matt! And with all the tables I see in your pics and now armies ranked up in glass cabinets, it seems you are putting together Warhammer World Swindon ;-)
I would certainly be up for it! I have just had an offer accepted on a place in Newport so I'll be just down the M4 from you - even if it's just for that game we talked about before! :-)
My whole Tzeentch army started with this second-hand metal Lord of Change, which sat base coated for over two years. It was probably never going to happen when I was trying to use them as a 40k army...
Anyways his colouring is based on a wonderful native New Zealand bird called the Kea. Not only are they beautiful with their forest green feathers and orange under wing, they are intelligent, and total trolls as well.
That's a excellent paint scheme and a lovely model! I love using natural color schemes for my models as well. My Jungle Swarms are like little nature dioramas of the native (and not so native) reptiles from Florida.
Spirit hosts, woods with boggy ground (haven't finished trees yet) Dark Elf Sorceress and Lizard hero.
Dark elves have me interested at the moment, painted this one in classic drow colors, and as you can guess as I add more 'drow' I will also be adding some of the mega spiders (Arachnarok).
Repainted a unit of Blightkings I got when they 1st arrived, painting come on leaps and bounds since then so I've redone them so they fit with my current Rotbringers theme.
Got some Chosen too and painted the champ as a test
Hey all, I just joined the hobby this past June, so I'm not quite a year into it. My first serious attempt at painting, basing, conversions, etc. was for an army of Stormcast Eternals. I purchased the starter box and painted the Stormcast side, and then went and made additional purchases to augment it. I've been lurking on these forums for the past 6 months and the pictures I saw really inspired me to get better and push myself.
Mongoose Matt, in particular I've enjoyed your battle write-ups and really been impressed by the quality AND SPEED of your painting.
I'll have a report on the Magmadroth I've been working on lately very shortly!
Without further ado, the full army:
Total count:
20 Liberators
20 Judicators
10 Protectors
5 Decimators
3 Retributors
3 Prosecutors
Lord Relictor
Lord Castellant and Gryph Hound
Lord Celestant on Drakhoth
Conversion counts as Balthasar Gelt
Celestant Prime
Some of the better pieces:
My Celestant Prime was displayed at the local GW store I started purchasing at, which was a big confidence boost.
I can tell my painting has become much better. The Lord Relictor on the right was one of the first detailed models I did, the Lord Castellant on the left was one of the later models I worked on:
I found I was getting destroyed by armies that could summon when I played at the local GW store, and Stormcast Eternals have no wizards. So I found the warscroll that would fit the fluff and work well for my purposes, which was Balthasar Gelt. I hated his old resin model though, so I decided to undertake my first serious conversion and make my own. I used a left over Stormcast Paladin head, a body and accessories from a high elf mage set, and a Bretonian pegasus knight. The boost to unbinding was exactly what I needed.
I managed to salvage some of the Empire miniatures that I bought for an Imperial Guard conversion project. So far I have 10 handgunners and 5 Halberdiers. It was then that I opted to collect an Empire army rather than WoC on the grounds that I want a nice, bright and colorful army. The plan is buy a Battalion box, an Empire General on a Griffon and some Greatswords. This should give me a grand total of 20 handgunners, 25 Halberdiers, 10 Knights, 1 cannon, 10 Greatswords and a mounted general which seems to be enough for a good AoS army.
As for the colors... probably a Stirland army. Green and yellow look nice together.

Looking great! And using the champion for the test model? You must have been confident haha!
Didn't take notes so no battle report, but here's some improv terrain for a Battleplan we played. We're continuing to work on our gaming table for AoS. Proper gaming mat next.
We've also stated what terrain has what rules. Saves times and terrain rules do add an additional level (especially during deployment).

The daemons and undead "start collecting" boxes are relatively new compared to the other three. If it is all the same to you then grab the nurgle box - it has a hero, a regular infantry unit, a small pestering unit and a heavy cavalry unit.
P.S. (not to mention they're included in the campaign books so you'll get heavy use out of them if the Realmgate wars story is your thing)

Wow Matt! Great as always. Your Skaven army is certainly coming along. Just in time for the new battletome perhaps ;-) are you theming the Skaven army or just doing a general force with the various sub factions included?
Bottle wrote: [

I did Pestilens as a separate force - I did consider doing each of the clans with their own paint scheme, but figured that way lay madness. So, the rest have variations of the red and grey (for example, the Stormvermin are all red, Clan Eshin are all grey, and Skryre is a mix!).
Haechi wrote: The stormvermins are such a great kit it almost makes me want to do Skavens haha
I ran Skaven for years in WHFB (6E-8E), and have been sorely tempted to redo them with tasty new plastics for AOS. Stormvermin are my home boys, so I'd be looking at like 2x 30 of them - which is like nothing in 8E terms
Pretty sure I'd just need a proper Gutter Runners kit / handful of models to convince me ...
Finished this guy time so I can start a Death army with the malignants box, a necrosphinx and hopefully the new skeleton horde box coming out. The fiance has decided she likes the vampire theme.
Anyway, this guy can be a mercenary for her or for my Stormcast Eternals.

I finally get to post another completed project in here, my Vulkite Bezerkers! These guys took aaaaages, doing all the NMM gold and metal was a nightmare, but I am happy how they came out. I was spurred on with a mad final week to get ready for Deathwatch Overkill lol. Check them out!
Thanks guys! The red moustaches were chosen to try and tie the beards with the mohawks, feel free to like or dislike them :-)
There's a few with orange moustaches too. I think if I was ever to add more to them (don't plan to, but you never know lol) I would have more oranges to balance it out a little.
I went for the runeson with javelin for the aesthetic. But I looked at his rules and they weren't terrible, so I didn't fret over the choice too much. He's a bit of a ranged threat now, and if I have troops in front of him he can attack over them nicely.
Getting some work in on my undead, nothing finished yet but:
Spoiler:
I like the ethereal effect, at least.
EDIT: also a closer look at the in progress test batch of skeletons, which will be finished before the rest of the engine, as I'll be testing out basing and other ideas on them:

Paints used are in the first pic (which I left in the quote above), though they are a bit hard to make out.
1- Black undercoat/primer
2- celestra grey (two thinned down coats to get even coverage)
3- Nihilakh Oxide - shake it frequently while painting* 4- drybrush celestra grey
5- wash with 1 to 2 mix of thraka green (coelia greenshade should be fine) and lahmia medium,
... focus around recesses, high texture areas, areas you want contrast (ribcage, hands, spine, knees, face, etc)
6- lighter drybrush of celestra grey in areas you want to lighten up (skull, shoulders, rib cages, w/e
7- very light drybrush of white (I used a P3 paint, but any stark/cold white works, avoid cream colors) to add highlight were desired
8- waywatcher green glaze in recessed/shadowed areas, under skull, under ribs, etc), anywhere you want a bit more color or shadow
You might go back and forth a bit, brightening things up with grey and white drybrushes, or bringing them back down with glazes and medium diluted washes until you have the effect you want.
* when painting the Nihilakh Oxide, it's very important to shake the bottle thoroughly before you start, and then frequently while painting - say every three to five models depending on how fast you go, or every few minutes while working on a larger model. The paint settles quickly, and as it does it changes both color and consistency, becoming thinner and bluer as you go, but subtly, a little at a time, and you might not notice if you aren't careful. It basically goes from this cool smokey blue-green effect to basically painting on a thinned down blue wash. It's really important to avoid that, as it's basically the most important step of the process.
Actually, entire ghostly armies have been done based on Nihilakh Oxide over a white/grey undercoat (LINK), and what I'm doing is pretty similar, just worked a bit farther for a bit sharper contrast and a bit more color variation (the green ink, green glaze, and nihilakh are all slitely different hues), which may or may not be what you want.
Not that I can claim credit for any of it, as it's taken pretty much whole cloth from part 2 of GW's pretty great series on painting Nagash (which also features a nice if time consuming blending method on the cloak):
@Bottle: Those look gorgeous, and I'm very jealous of the photo skills as well!! The detail in particular on the weapons is outstanding. I like the big horn and the axe with the blue(ish) inlay the best.
@Malisteen: I love the skeletons. I just did the spirit hosts in the getting started box using the same nihilakh oxide as well, but yours definitely turned out better than mine. I think it was the green shades... I can tell you definitely put in some work there!

Thanks man! The photos are just an iPhone5 and a piece of A4 paper, good lighting is all you need!
Awesome! I'm about to prime and paint my 20 pp Fyreslayers army once I can get a bud's painting materials. I'll post some pics when there is something to show.
Finished an Eshin Assassin.Struggled a bit with the black and it's the 1st finecast model I've had casting probs that bugged me but overall pretty happy with him.
I reached a hang up on the test batch, due to being out of the browns
I want to use, and I can't buy more till this weekend probably, so I've
started on the ghostly effect for the rest of the first block of 30.
I do think the effect's starting to come together, though, and I'm pretty
happy with it so far. Since I can't really progress any further on the engine
or the front skellies until the weekend, so I'm aiming to get the rest of these
skeletons, plus 20 grave guard and maybe, if I push myself, 10 black knights
up to where the test skeletons are now before then.
Here's the list I'm trying to get painted by the 26th for an event:
Spoiler:
Main List
- Arkhan
- Wight King with Black Axe
- Necromancer
- 1 Morghast Archai
- 10 Black Knights
- 20 Grave Guard
- 30 Skeletons
- Mortis Engine
Summoning Pool
- 6 Spirit Hosts
- 3 Bat Swarms
- Terrorgheist
Scenario Markers
- 6 influence markers (gravestones)
- 1 runner (single spirit host spirit, or maybe a Mordheim dredge)
- 1 Flag Marker (Wight King BSB)
Looking great Malisteen! Did you not consider going from white undercoat rather than black and painting multiple thin coats of grey on top? Seems much easier :-)
Cannot wait to see more of them. Your Necromancer conversion and the BSB look great too! Can we get a close up?
I did consider white primer, but much of the color scheme - basically everything that isn't ghostly green, is actually rather dark and really wants the black undercoat, so it would end up being about the same amount of hassle anyway, and if there's recesses I couldn't reach with a brush, like some of the nooks and crannies up under the black knight barding and whatnot, I'd rather they were black and not white.
As for close ups:
Here's an old picture of the BSB from before I re-primed it. It's half-painted in the color scheme of my old Von Carstein army (LINK), which I sold when I decided I didn't like the look - Too bright, too warm, looked like they were marching to war in the noon-day sun. Plus, after the 8e army book brought back Master Necromancers, I wanted to switch to a more necromantic and less vampyric themed army anyway. Unfortunately, between work and classes, I didn't get around to actually painting any models in the new scheme until now. Anyway...
Spoiler:
The model is a lord of the rings barrow wight, plus a grave guard shield arm, brass wire for the banner pole, and the shield with crow and banner itself are from the empire general kit, with the hammer on the top of the banner replaced with a scythe blade taken from the zombie kit. I also did some putty work on the shield - replacing the 'KF' that was there with a big 'W' for Wilhelm I, a tyranical early ruler of the Empire who Vlad roused as a Wight King during the End Times. I also added a skull design to the banner's shield while I was at it. I don't do much sculpting, but I think these turned out alright.
.............
Here's the necromancer, from before I primed the new base. He's about half painted in the new scheme. He was being done as a test case for techniques I intend to use on Nagash, once I have enough of an army painted to be worthy of the big guy. The robes and hat still need to be darkened away from the ghostly blend with some diluted black washes, some details still need to be painted, and the staff is going to be re-done completely in a darker brown (I'll be aiming for something closer to the bones on the studio model Neferata's steed). Plus the new base needs to be painted, I'm still not sure what I'm doing there. But the overall effect is more or less there.
Spoiler:
More detailed progress on my army can be seen on my hobby log thread on Carpe Noctem (LINK)
Here is my first offering, be kind in regards to my meager painting skills.
Spoiler:
Up next is to build the rest of the Start Collecting Nurgle Daemons box and go from there. I really want a Greater Daemon of Nurgle, but GW is still out of stock. :(

Forgeworld's version is pricier, but it's also a dramatically superior model.
Actually, what I'd do if I were playing nurgle chaos is get the glotkin and use the big monster as a greater daemon, and convert the two brothers riding him into mortal or daemon heroes on foot. Which works great as long as you don't plan on using the glotkin themselves.
@Coldhatred That looks quite nice - no need to be so self deprecating!
My one suggestion is that you should try and take the brown paint you used for the body and lighten run a thin coat over the raised parts of the body of the demon while avoiding the recesses. The figure looks very dark to me overall, which usually happens when you run a dark wash over the whole thing - the colors end up muted. This one step brings back a lot of color and depth to a model, and since you are avoiding any areas where one color meets another, it is usually pretty easy.
Test model done for my Fyreslayers elemental theme and see what you think. Easier to give Twitter freed from my phone so @kennylull
Enjoy! Trying attachment here, hopefully doesn't break Dakka
I've thought about it, as I do like the Forgeworld version, but it certainly won't be happening any time soon!

Hadn't thought of that. Could be an option, for sure.

Thanks! I appreciate the positive comment. I know it isn't bad, but some painters are just amazing compared to me.
So, basically a thinned down, comprehensive highlight with the original color pre-wash?

Saw this done recently, except the little bros were magnetized to either ride Ghurek and form Glottkintron, or rock their own bases as Nurgle Lord + Nurgle Sorcerer + Great Unclean One. Certainly a concept, although personally I prefer a little more conversion done to Ghurek to make him into a more interesting GUO ... but then I also have no desire to run The Glottkin as themselves, because ridiculous uber special characters are ridiculous, uber.
Finished my assassins little buddies and while they are very dated and a pain to paint there is a certain charm to them and I'm really quite fond of them
Just need to add some grass tufts but I've ran out and have to wait till saturday before I can get down to my GW shop.
I've been reorganising my undead, sold all my TK's and all the infantry from my Vamp Counts and I'm going to concentrate on Soul Blight Vamps who summon Malignants.Started with a new paint scheme for my Vargiests.
I just unearthed a tomb kings treasure load, including:
warsphinx (empty howda)
6 necropolis snakes (sans riders)
11 empty chariots
necrosphinx
2 catapults (with crew)
1 ushabti
a bone giant
20 old metal tomb guard
10 plastic tomb guard new in box
assorted characters (khalida, heralds, lich priests)
assorted sprues, including at least 3 of the necropolis riders
I'm not sure what all I'm going to do with it, or what all of it I'm going to keep. In particular, the metal and plastic tomb guard look too different to use both. I don't much care for the metal models, but I don't really have enough of the plastic models to make a unit, so I'm not sure what if any of them I'm going to end up keeping.
It's quite a haul, and there may be more coming (in particular, if I'm lucky, five ushabti and the other three necropolis riders). A lot of repair work is necessary, and replacement riders for the chariots at least, and... it's going to be very hard to maintain my focus on the models I'm painting for the upcoming store event with all these neat new toys to sorth through and tinker with....
I am currently at the alpha stage of what will be this year project for my hobby, namely a full Stormcast Eternals army. I am happy that GW will release a painting guide for them this week so I am eager to begin to work with all the tools in hand.
The project is nothing short of all the SE units released. I wanted to playtest the army a little before I commit to the brush or new purchases and I have found it much to my liking.
The currently assembled units are the entire starter part, an unit of five Decimators and an unit of five Judicators. Hopefully they will be basecoated by next week so I can begin to work with the painting as per the official guide. I am yet undecided whether to go with Astral Templars or the Celestial Vindicators, both have a very bold livery and much like the Chaos player that I am, I do like bold colors.
I finished off rebasing 10 more of my Empire Swordsmen for Age of Sigmar, and this marks a milestone for me as I have now rebased everything painted in my Empire army :-)
Gonna try and take some army shots soon to post up the entire collection so far :-)
Thanks guys! These were actually painted a while ago (over a year ago) so it is just the rebasing that has finished recently.
I have another 40 infantry to try and do this year, and hopefully you'll see improvement with them!
@Baron Klatz the feather is pinned to the front of his chest plate, I have a few champion models with similar feathers in the pipeline. He looked a bit lacking without it, and the idea is a broach or pin would fasten the feather in place. :-)
Looks awesome Matt! Both the Doombull and the Dreadfort! Are you building your way up to one of the massive castles? (Like the big circular one)?
Rygnan wrote: Bottle, how did you go about rebasing? I'm considering doing the same to my Skaven but I'm not really sure how to.
Hey, I used pliers to snip off all the old bases from the models, I sanded up some new bases and primed them, I then stuck the models on with superglue before filling in any gaps with liquid green stuff. A few of the models got a bit damaged around the feet, which is where tactical grass tufts come into play ;-)
Progress, this is the scheme for my elemental Fyreslayers lodge. 80 troops batch pained more than half done, characters get more attention . Magmadroth saved for last.
Made a Nurgle Chariot for my local GW campaign. Still see some little spots to touch up on. And the beast came out a bit "Why so serious?" by accident.
The result of numerous encounters with overly inquisitive kittens about a year ago, lost the tip and struggled to find a suitable replacement so just left it

Ahh right. Cats can be douches! My mate's cat used to terrorise his gaming table relentlessly. Plucking the trees off and attacking the buildings lol.
A long weekend meant I could get all the infantry of my new Fyreslayers done, from start to finish!
I did some painting notes here: https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/2016/03/29/fyreslayers/ in which I mention that someone on this forum gave me the idea for the dark skin - sorry, but I could not track down that post and credit you. However, it was the idea of someone else with more imagination than me!
Great work so far everybody!
Here's my progress on Fyreslayers for Fantasia Fanatic next weeken in Sweden. Clash comp 30/20. Need to paint magmadroth 2: The Magnaing-ing for the back up list points. I'm pretty pleased with how they are turning out considering all my hobby supplies are overseas and I'm working with a limited range of materials.
Went to the store today and just had to get the newest AoS release, can't wait to build my new Chaos Sliceslash Deathkill Blooddrinker Slaughterbutcher Skull Collectors.

The best thing about this post is that even after two attempts, it still wasn't funny. At least, not in the 'laughing with you' way...

My full time work is running a publishing company, I am in the midst of launching two major game systems (Traveller and Paranoia), I am currently writing a novel and building a robot boat, and for kicks I am in the middle of a degree in Planetary Science and Astronomy.
I just do AoS on the side. Oh, and we are about to start the Badab War with brand new armies.
Spare time? Yeah, I am not sure exactly what that is

Another one for the Ignore pile - I have found Dakka becomes most readable if you avail yourself of its facilities.
In happier news, got some Tzeentch models polished off...
Includes King Thrond for our Realmgate Wars battle this Friday, and my first Everchosen model, the Gaunt Summoner!
Beautiful models as usual Matt, really like the color scheme.
...oh and I hate you. I refuse to believe you are human. Maybe you are an evolved AI preparing to kill us all and replace us with an army of machine gamers? Maybe you are the War on Grey Plastic taken physical form?
On the topic of the Ignore function, my problem has become that I now have so many people on my ignore list from AoS threads that in normal threads, where some of these same people don't behave like asshats (strangely enough), it feels somewhat empty... a bit of a shame really.
Matt, while we have you here, please play (and write a report) of the Fyreslayer battle plan where you move through each section of the board like a dungeon crawl :-) (I think zombies also fall from the sky in it!)

On the list of things to do - need to paint up those zombies first (they are possibly the next 'big' project, either them or Everchosen Chaos Warriors).

Beautiful Tzeentch models.
That chariot is calling to me...
I played that actually back in January. In the fav scenario thread I brought that up. The Fiend's Lair, from FS battle tome. I suggest giving it a go. Like a old RPG or video game. The opponent didn't realize how devastating for me it could be since he came in with spells active. Turn 2 my 20 vulkite berzerkers face a horde of skeletons with spears who did 91 attacks. ouch. then immediately 91 more. But since unit was fresh that 4+ ward save helped so only 7 died, even with my crappy rolling. It's a fun scenario and I recommend it. If you have misplaced your a copy I'm sure we can get you a new one.
Matt I love those Fyreslayers!
Really simple colours but the orange hair and crests contrast the dark skin tones beautifully, and the splash of gold here and there add some polish and detail. I've started to really appreciate the Dwarf/Duardin plastic kits a lot more of late having seen the various work in this thread.
Just started with AoS. Picked up the starter set on friday, and currently painting my stormcast. This the first warrior i painted, it's not finnished just yet, it need some more highlights.
No pictures right now, but I'm in the process of building up a Swifthawk Agents force using just Shadow Warriors and a Skycutter.
In preparation for a "Build Your Own Hero" event, I just finished up converting what I'm going to call a "Swifthawk Watcher". The following is in effect: - HERO: 5 wounds / Movement 6" / Armor 4+ / Bravery 8
--- May take 2 weapons / 4 Abilities
------ Only 1 Ability may be selected that causes Wounds/Mortal Wounds
--- Add the Keyword HERO
It's a Shadow Warrior with an owl perched upon his arm, using the following:
Alith Anar's Moonbow and the Nomad Prince Hunting Hawk's Beak
Strike Unseen rule from Shadow Warriors
Eye Thief from the Nomad Prince
Quicksilver Shot from the Sisters of the Watch
Loose Until the Last from the Sisters of the Watch
Matt, how did you do those flames? Yellow base, then several layers of shades getting darker the further out you get? Looks nice!
Basically - the same system White Dwarf had for the fire on the Fyreslayers - white base, then all over with Cassandora Yellow. Then work outwards with Fuegan Orange, Carroburg Crimson, and the tips with Nuln Oil (sounds weird, but it works).
Really is a lot quicker than it sounds, and is the simplest/quickest/bestest way I have found to do fire.
I'm painting some Protectors, after finishing a Lord Castellent and Retributors from the starter set. Does anyone have any tips for painting white on the scrolls? I tried watering it down, using greys to highlight up but it is still coming out as streaky. Thanks in advance.
I need to get better pictures, but my old lightbox is busted up and I don't have a bulb for the light I usually use--but here's the basics.
I changed the bow overnight, instead cutting up one I had laying around to give him a better more ornate look. Thinking about bashing up some stats and maybe see about having someone make me an actual warscroll with just the statlines that I can print out and laminate to use him as a Swifthawk Agent Hero, since their only other option is a Skywarden on Skycutter.
I asked on the AoS facebook page if they would make blank warscrolls available for the players so we can make custom Heroes and the like, seems they're taking that pretty seriously.
He might be getting his own custom Warscroll made if that ends up happening.
Thought I would sign up and post what I have been working on. It is a little unconventional but I have been really enjoying converting my models. It all stems from one small line in a description: In the midst of battle across the Mortal Realms, the mightest of Human, Orruk, Aelf and Duardin kind were transported away in a flash of lightning, for a greater cause than defiant suicide against the Chaotic hordes awaited them.
I give you the Stormcast Orcternals
Spoiler:
This was near the beginning when a lot of blue tac was being used just to see the effects
My dracoth riders, I have another 4, and 3 varanguard that I plan on converting as I didn't much care for the new poses of the dracoth knights. Also check the dreads
My protectors, the aim as they are essentially monster/daemon hunters is to make them look as badass as possible with big trophies because when have Orcs ever been subtle.
This head is the 40k ork pain boy, my aim is to make it look like the left side of his face is burnt and his eye is missing. I am quite happy with the effect.
Sorry for the huge photos, I have no idea how to make them smaller.
I have a small force but I am happy that I have each and every model with a different head and I hope to make each of them as unique as possible. C and C welcome.

Have you done any female ones? (Sorry, long running joke around these parts).
They look really good, the Retributors in particular. The prime from the Starter set in the foreground looks particularly... 'confident'.
Have you decided on a colour scheme yet?

You have just won the internet of the day. (what the hell does this mean? Oh well I think it applies here. ) Hell you won the internet of the month, if not the year.
You will now know you have to post pics once they are painted.
And, is the OP the same Matt I heard recently on Heelan Hammer? It took me a bit of time to piece it together, but if so, cheers, thanks for doing the show, you're a credit to the AOS community.
My own Bloodbound are buzzing along slowly, but here are my latest addition, a unit of Skullcrushers:
Well, I don't have alot of time so I'll sum up everything above this post in two words:
Unbelievably Epic!!
Now then, onto my stuff. I'll spoiler it so people who like seeing actually well-painted models can skip it. (They're not finished anyway)
Spoiler:
Now then, as I am becoming a Stormcast collector(along with Brets, wanderers and maybe high elves) I want my Stormcast to embody a new Bretonnia as it were.
I'm going to make every Stormcast a unique hero that shows why they were favored by Sigmar.
Yeah, that's shovel knight in the middle. I like making videogame knights as well, you can see a mounted and on-foot Link in the background too.
The leftmost Stormcast is a Paragon of the Darkstorm hammers. Knights who crusaded against chaos into their own hellish realm and were forever blackened by the hell fire.
The middle knight is a Striker of Terra. A small order of knights that bear shovel blades and blue armor in memory of a mythic warrior who dug too deep into his own magical kingdom and feel into the mortal realms where he valiantly fought the forces of darkness. (Might make a Duardin warband to go with him.)
The right knight is my local leader of the hallowed knights that patrol the realms of Life and Beasts. A strong friendship between them and the wanderer Aelves.
That's all I have for right now. Hobby time is a precious commodity.
Thanks for the compliments, let me tell you the Orcternals have received some genuine hate from some hobbyists, but what do they know
No colour scheme has been decided yet, I am still in the process of converting them all, little bits of fur, and chain mail, hair etc. But I am really enjoying the whole process. Just trying to give a little character to the stormcast.
Also this thread really is inspiring, and I think it is a great way to keep motivation up thanks a lot guys. And thanks Davor for the winning the internet, its always been a goal of mine
Haha, how could anyone hate Orcternals? That's just too awesome for disagreement!
(in fact, once they're painted, you need to make a poster with them that says,"I've got a host of Sigmar, Mork and Gork blessed armored orcs. All arguments have been made invalid!"

I see like a dark brownish ghosts. Not bad, something different and gives me inspiration in trying to paint my ghosts a different colour other than the "green" LotR ghosts. Like the bases, and the ghosts are not bad. Just wondering what colour they are suppose to be if not brown then. I think it really goes well with the bases and looks quite good.
Hmm, seems like it might be my camera then. Now that I look at another screen, it does indeed look brown. Here is a wip that I took with my phone a few days ago, this is more true to the actual colors.

Looks good as well. Hopefully lesson learned. Don't blame people that it's their problem when seeing something they see.
Finished his Hound. Much better pics when the whole model is complete but will try to post pics as it goes. Also working on a Bloodreaver and a Wrathmonger. I just scored the whole Starter Box for cheap so will paint those up.
Here's my newly finished Knight-Venator. I wasn't interested at all in the Stormcast until I saw this mini.
Unfortunately something happened that made the image teeny tiny, so you can only get the gist. Now I'm building an entire Celestial Vindicators army. I'll throw up more pics as I can. I also have a Dark Elf Sorceress and a unit of Liberators painted that I haven't photographed yet.

Sorry, I'm not sure if you're talking to me
I wish I had my paints rather than a few pots I picked up in Sweden but they made it to table top ready standard in time. And while I'm miles behind most of these painters...I was not the worst painted at the event
@spyguyyoda - love the purple and the dark gun metal. A really menacing look!
@veterannoob - yeah, I was talking to you :-) haha, perhaps wasn't so clear. Do you have any close ups of the different units in your army? You should post them!
Bottle: Thanks! I was originally going to paint them as Sons of Mallus, with black armor and Purple shields/shoulder pads. I decided I didn't really want to paint black, so here we are! He's still in testing, though. (This level was only about 10 minutes of work).
I'm thinking of switching the trim on the shoulderpads and shield to gold. Any thoughts on that?
