I do like the extended version; the original was just toooooo stumpy to be effective.

I agree that GW need to jump onto the digital sculpting thing; being able to start small selling simple STLs of the basics like chapter pads/doors/banners or vehicle detail packs would be really easy for them to do and cost nothing once they have them set up/templated. The main issue would be stopping people from then just distributing them for free elsewhere as attempts to add digital signatures in stls could easily be stripped.

It must be something they are looking into though, given the speed at which the gaming industry is changing

Lots of cool stuff since I last checked in, great to see the progress on the Scythes, but the assault ram is looking great with the printed pieces.

Hope things are okay with your wife's grandmother, care homes back home with me took a serious hit with Covid.

That Kill Team box you mentioned does look nice, but I am concerned about the price when that gets revealed.

Well, not much happening hobby wise. Work and family keeping us busy. Mother in n law was going to move in for a couple weeks while she was recovering from hip surgery, but she delayed that a couple more months so or daughter can get her drivers license and be of more help. Wife’s Grandma still trying to recover from Covid and broken Femur and my mom celebrated her 84th Bday .

Got a Test-cron mostly done. I need some other paints to finish up the blade and maybe doe some weathering on the stone/brown shoulder blades.

Thanks guys, the blade is just Aethermatic Blue over coral white....for now, needs more blues

One of the little known uses of a 3D printer is if your hungry you can make Croissants.

You actually don’t even need to be hungry, you can just enjoy saying Croissant, especially if you like saying it with a terrible French accent .

Nice print, I hope it matches the testicron blade somewhere about its person. Would TestiCroissant then be the correct descriptor? Which surely can only be said in a terrible french accent

Well, things have slowed, probably due to winter, but we all hit these slow output patches at times. When time is available there will be a great purge . I look upon the piles of shame that block my view of the foothills and mountains of shame and it saddens me. It more than reminds me of what my grandparents basement looked like years ago, and that was not good . So, four 33 gallon trash bags were filled this weekend, and that was just empty boxes and debris. Most likely a lot of smaller games I purchased just because I got them off the dinged and dented shelves will just get pitched, but the FLGS nearest me has a consignment rack, so maybe I’ll be able to rescue some money. It has just gotten to the overload point. Also it’s blocking my paint desk and desire to even approach it . Also going to look at all the prints littering my desk and purge there too.

In the mean time, I’m printing a worm......

Because I didn’t want to mess with the piles I dug through all my downloads over the last year and moved this guy up the chain. I need to pick up some small sanding sticks/ nail files to get into the detail areas.

Thanks guys. Busy stupid week here, did just barely manage to make it by Miniature Market last night to pick up a copy of Codex Necrons, still need the Primaris codex, but this should keep me busy. Also snagged another color of blue paint and found a spray can of Runelord Brass they marked down to $10 because the cap was broken , usually $30 WTAF GW. It might change my paint scheme for my Necrons, Warmer weather will be the deciding factor on that though.

Also not sure how I screwed up my Amazon order.....it really wasn't intentional . I have a roll of my filament delivered every month (turns out it's every 4 weeks), but I ordered another roll because I thought it was still 2+ weeks away. They both showed up yesterday . The wife didn't think it was that funny , but it is on $22 so not a big stink over it.

Hopefully I'll scrounge some time this weekend to go get some sanding sticks/nail files for final clean up on the Necron Worm parts and do some assembly. I printed of 20 legs yesterday and will do another 10 tonight to make sure. I'm not sure how many sections long I want to make this beast.

I hadn’t heard anything, but hadn’t really looked either. Szeras does not line up (Period). Psycho wasn’t much of an issue, some of the tentacles were troublesome to assemble, but nothing more than usual with my huge fingers.

Speaking of pop culture reference, this guy reminds me of the machine from the movie Wall-E.

It even has the small little arms to push buttons .

Obviously not done yet, but kind of the range of typical warrior to towering behemoth, a scale reference for Necron sizes.

And the assembled skorptek Destroyer Lord next to a BtGoA Gahr

I really think the Gahr should have been the size of the Skorpteks to match their profiles. Also then you could fit a Gahr inside without the “Compacting” technology which shrinks the user .

Well, let’s just say I had to finish this as a promise to myself. I went to Miniaturemarket earlier and grabbed another copy of Indomitus....then kicked myself and put it back on the shelf. When I was leaving with just a couple pots of paint 20 minutes later I saw someone else was buying the Indomitus box, so I feel good about the decision. It could have been lots of reinforcements for both sides, but nothing really new. I have both these centipedes and the two flyers to do besides the contents I already have.

I was looking at the necron codex earlier and realized the two flyers I have can be made as transports and they each can carry 20 warriors , I do have 40 warriors waiting to get done up.

Also printing a special flyer base for the night scythes right now.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/02/20 23:51:24

Post by: GrimDork

Is it the one that's beaming in a warrior? Cuz that one's pretty cool.

Looks like you did a Good Samaritan.

I am still considering an indomitous half off of eBay for my necrons, I could use extra of everything but the characters and the characters can be made into some pretty cool conversions that I've seen. It would also cap me out on scarabs almost.

Well the doom scythe is kind of expensive for its relative durability and damage output, The night scythe is in a pretty good place.

In addition to its 20 model capacity it can beam a unit in better than deep strike through a stratagem and when you combine that with a veil of darkness, you can get a huge chunk of your army up in your opponent's face. Lots of reaper warriors, or Lynch guard are some of the preferred options.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/02/21 17:39:27

Post by: Theophony

Yes, the base is the one beaming in the troops.

First one printed and first layers applied. The digital/pixelated look will tie in with the Psychomancer nicely. The second one is printing now and should be done later tonight, it’s a 15 hour print at 0.2mm thickness.

It eats up a ton of the Contrast Aethermatic Blue though .

Very true. The Night Scythe and the convergence of dominion terrain kits are $60 each, I printed two of the flyers and one of the three dominion pieces for less than $20, so that should cover my paint funds for a while. The two tomb sentinels I printed are $89 each, so really with them coming off the same $22 spool as the rest I am really saving money.....why’s my bank account not reflect this .

Ahahah. My problem with saving money in Warhammer is it usually allows me to buy something else that's more expensive... Or that I'm saving money by buying a bundle which is definitely more expensive than any of the components which I would have bought instead.

Oh, also in the Warhammer community update today they did say that pariah Nexus would have rules to allow you to play. I imagine that it would not be a full rule book, probably missing the unit stats or missions or something. But with the models in the box and several of your other Indomitus minis, you could play some kind of kill team. I remember we had a discussion about whether it had the rules or not It seems to some extent that have confirmed at least some rules.

There’s a new thread in news and rumors which has a screenshot of the index showing all the data sheets and content.

I kind have rethought the Indomitus purchase again. I might pull the trigger tomorrow as the Indomitus is a limited supply and everything else is a continued purchase release. It’s dumb I know, but it’s such a good deal even if I don’t split it up or sell the other rulebook.

Yeah the sheer imaginary value and limited availability are really pushing my decision. I never intended to buy two fully stacked Warhammer armies all up front, but most of what I've been shopping for has been limited edition we're out of print so they're really forcing my hand.

That's neat about that screenshot I shall have to see if it's got anything I don't know.

It makes me sick to get Indomitus, the Christmas battle force, and possibly pick up that start collecting... but this is pretty much my only chance to get any of them lol. Guess I'm putting myself into hobby debt at the beginning of the year for the rest of the year.

Well, I did my job well and procrastinated until Miniaturemarket was sold out of Indomitus . "I am Omegon"....Alpharius would have bought it and had it painted in chaos colors just to make it seem like they were chaos. Thankfully, no one else has Indomitus to tempt me .

Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:I love that pixellated version of the Night Scythe portal's beam. If I wasn't building my Scythe to be able to swap in the Death Ray...

The great thing about the base is that it has a empty spot where the flight peg attaches, so you can set up your model as the death ray and put it on a separate base, take the death ray off and then put it on this base. Magnets .

Base sounds dope, jelly.

Too bad(??) about indomitus. I'm still fighting with the idea. I could probably do without any of it, but #2 would enable one DW kill team now and another after pariah Nexus. Plus a plasmancer for spare chronomancer parts from there. So, if I spend more money now I have a better reason to spend more money later...

I dun did got myself . It's not like they called me and said "Guess what we have saved for you because we read your thread" .

Seriously it will give me time to decide on the other things. I still don't have a marine codex, so I must bulk out the Necron Legions. I wonder what a pure gunline would look like with my 60 warriors and 18 scarabs backed up by the 12 Skorptek guys and a load of Croissants....

also on the printer is the Seraptek Heavy Construct. the current part is a 34 hour print. This project will be a week long affair if not longer.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/02/22 20:42:32

Post by: GrimDork

Oh wow, I've seen those Serapteks... extra jealous now

40 reaper warriors plopping out of the scythes which can also invasion beam in another 20 warriors a piece, or lychguard or immortals or what have you.

I bet the deathray version is pretty fun in a less competitive medium too!

If you have marine questions, and can't figure it out from battlescribe, I went ahead and got the book so I can field them if you need.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/02/22 21:35:54

Post by: Theophony

Thanks,

The printing will continue until I have all the things . The guns on the side of the Seraptek each take 2 days , so it's a longer project than I thought, But it will be well worth it as the whole thing will cost less than $15. I have tried to print the front legs a couple of times, each time I try to do it with less time spent, or to get a better finished product (less sanding). I might wind up spending more on it's base than the model

Also I did some Necron terrain 3D style back when I first got the printer. It is calling for paint.

Seriously, the Ender3 has been working almost non-stop for 11 months. I got it at $199.00, the last I looked at the price now was $169.00 and the spools of filament I use (really good stuff) is $22.00 a Kg from Amazon. I use about 1 Kg a month. It has well been worthwhile, but my next printer will be a resin one so I can do figures and parts like custom heads and arms.

Perfect for terrain and larger models, well worth the investment.

Speaking of large models from a 3D printer....

Finished the second half of the torso today, I had printed the hips and leg joints a long time ago. I have some of the leg parts done, but will probably reprint them at this higher infill due to load bearing. Shoulder armor left side is printing now, it should be done by the time I get home tomorrow then I’ll do the other shoulder. Legs and guns to follow as I already have the head....somewhere. Croissant and warrior for size reference.

PLA all the way, ABS may be cheaper, but the quality and the smell combined make it a non starter for me. As for learning, it’s a small curve as I am not a tech guy at all. A decent computer, my desktop is 10 years old and still runs the newest CURA software easy.

Yes.Yes it is , I’ll have to try and pose it correctly, but the image I loved had it rearing up with its front claws over the top of the Castelean Knight Titan. I think it’s base may be large enough to play Kill Team on .

Added the chest plate and head, I’ll reprint the chest as it had some issues.

Holy crap! I was thinking the marine one would be $120, necrons less. That's....madness. oof. Wow. I guess at current prices for everything, You're basically getting the eradicators, blade guard, and one character at regular price with two extra characters technically for free.... But ooooof.

Nice scarabs, I think after nabbing some spares on eBay, I'll be able to do the max 27.

I saw someone had cut down the swarms in half as there are two pegs on each clump. Add stuff to the base like dead enemy or terrain bits and you can double the number you get. I think it looks too sparse myself, but then again I have enough old marine bits laying about.

The price was based off what it showed up on AUS preorders for, we will see in a few hours here for sure. Also the kill team terrain packs have less in them than before for more money. I think GW is about to get rid of another CEO. Price their stuff so far out that people like myself walk away for 4-5 years again and someone will pay the price. They have no idea how much plastic I have hoarded besides my printer running constantly.

3d printer go brrrrrrrrt!

What I have ended up with is 24 legitimate basis of scarabs, I have cut off one scarab from about a third of the bases and pressed molded them in oyumaru. Then I added 4-5 greenstuff scarabs for each borrowed one to make the bases look more full than official. The last 3 bases to cap out will end up with 5-6 loose legit scarabs and greenstuff filler to match the others. I was seriously contemplating just making half of my bases entirely out of green stuff but then I saw nine bases on eBay for like 30 bucks and figured why not... And then the second indomitus got me really close lol.

The kill team scenery definitely sounds too expensive to me, but I like building scenery out of free junk. I remember when GW first started making Warhammer scenery buildings, not the old third edition ruins and trees, I mean the modular buildings. Were something like $22 a set and they made a huge chonky ruin or a few good small ones. Definitely diverged from that these days.

I have tons of the Necromunda bulkheads, I had over 200 of then, but then gave some away a while back. I think I have 5 sets of Necromunda cardboard and a couple sets of the outlander cardboard too. When my print of the Seraptek is done, I might make some prints of the sold can terrain. Right now though I need to do some digging and find all my 3rd edition 40K building rubble wow hack up for my Necron bases.

Perhaps I’ll use that excuse why all my bulkheads still are not painted .

I put the rulebook from my second Indomitus up for $45 at the FLGS and it sold within an hour . I should have gone higher as I knew none of the local shops have been able to get more in. I have a bunch of store credit there now and I’m thinking of taking some other books up to try and sell. I might pick up the Bladeguard box they have sitting there and use the extra parts in it to customize the second unit from Indomitus, but like you I am still torn as to which way to paint them up.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/02/27 20:45:40

Yeah, I was thinking of trying to monopolize on the book somehow. Maybe the shop owner wants a store copy and would trade it for store credit? I mean, technically, it's a limited edition...but the contents are identical hmm.

Customizing them does sound nice. I should have it easy with Deathwatch, I'll probably just lop the arm off at the shoulder and replace it with a chapter specific one from the old upgrade kits...and then put the sword back in that hand. Also how I intend to convert the lieutenants into bladeguard, trade out that pistol for a dark angels power sword or similar.

Post by: Theophony

A second Indomitus never hurts anybody, but may affect their spending account for a while .

I painted the other bases of Scarabs for a total of 18 done . Played around with paints some more and I think I found a black that I really like.

Base corvus black, drybrush dawnstone, drybrush (praxeti White) though I may grab a lighter grey drybrush and give it a shot instead. Paint all with Black Templar contrast. I did a few small highlights of dawnstone drybrush again afterwards, but basically that was it.

Why? Well Scythes of the Emperor are lovely, but ultimately tiresome to paint. The black was not drawing me either, so I wanted to try out a couple things. Also talking with Grimdork reminded me how much I enjoyed the Templar’s back in the day and got me thinking of doing them again. The black could also be used for Ravenwing which is another strong possibility. I would go Blood Angels, but I really HATE what has been done to them with the Sanguinor and even the all gold Honor Guard. My shop has a bunch of Death company Intercessor boxes, which I could use if I went that route....but I’ll have to play with red again before I make that commitment.

Oh well, found a use for sigmarines in the mean time

Picking a marine chapter is seriously difficult. I know some people have no problem with it but for me, it's an issue.

Black looks solid doesn't sound like it's super hard to do, I'm hoping the black Templar contrast will do a lot of work for me as well.

One thing that I would caution you about if you want to paint your Marines with contrast paint: most contrast paints will leave a somewhat uneven color unless you put on multiple coats, which to me defeats the whole purpose of using contrast paints. YMMV, of course.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/03/02 15:12:16

Post by: Theophony

Yeah, I've been more using the Contrast as a wash than as full coverage, more of a tool than a solution in my book. Plus it is helping me with brush control.

So messing around with colors. I decided not to do Black Templars. For the same reason as I stopped doing them years ago, way too much Black. That said I got this guy a little further than whats in the picture before I decided that.

But I had tried a couple others using a similar approach.

He is done exactly like the Templar, just with a contrast wash of Militarum green instead of the Black templar. Now If I decided to do Dark Angels then I could break up the Black of the Ravenwing with the Green of regular troops and then the bone of the Deathwing. Still not sold on that Idea, but it's in the running.
The bone of the Deathwing would start off similar to this. Morghast Bone with drybrushing of terminatus stone and one other which name escapes me right now.

The guy has now joined the circus and has 5 or six different colors on him as I wanted to try some other contrast paints out. I really was liking the Blood Angels Red on top of this, Pics of that will come late tonight though. Seriously it pushed me towards going back to the sons of Sanguinus. It gives the depths of reds that I was always trying for but couldn't lock in. I may have to find a way to do a Contrast gold for the Sanguinary Guard

Dark angels are probably in as good a place as they've ever been, but blood angels are doing fine too. Both have pretty neat color schemes.

I really like blood angels red, it was the first contrast I picked up and I like how it looks.

I've seen people make gold out of bright silver covered in aggaros dunes. I'm gonna try that on my necrons. I'm hoping to silver bomb them and then follow up with a couple of contrasts and a wash but we'll see!

Fast, good, Necromunda Bulkheads:

Prime brown, then use weathering powders (rust). You'll do a couple of passes of applying the reddish-orange powder (the brighter the rust, the more recent it is) and mattle spray coat from a rattlecan.

You can use this to blast out GW terrain as well, but use some of the darker powders along the base/bottom quarter of the buildings, after you drybrush and wash them. So, it'd be: Prime base color for the building, wash for the recesses, drybrush, apply weathering powders, seal.

Hope this utterly un-asked for advice helps!

I'm not so keen on the greens and blues in the contrast range. I find they give really weird coverage even with a really good mix before hand.

I tried the agaros dunes over gunmetal and it comes out really dirty; I've not tried it over really bright silver though so that might make a difference

So got home and had a second look at Sir Mixalot the color pallet warrior.

I’m still really liking the Blood Angels Red on his shoulder pad, it’s dry now, his head is freshly coated so is still slightly glossy. I’m going to put a layer of basilica grey on top of the red to see what that looks like and also try some black Templar’s on top of the red. That way if I decide to paint Blood Angels I can see which one will work for the black trim parts and chest eagles.

Also painting some bases with the morghast bone to see if I can find a cheap matching craft paint to use as the base color.

For the morghast bone, you could always do what I've been considering. Paint a square of paper with the colour you want a lot of and take it to your home decorating place that mixes paint to match any sample and buy a pot.

I have done that before using Home Depot, and I will probably do it again for this. I have a test model waiting for me at home tonight that I quickly did this morning. I forgot to mention its morghast bone, Skeleton Horde contrast, and then three layers of drybrushing, then Blood Angels Red contrast. I will try adding Kindleflame drybrush when I get home to see if that's even necessary. It was looking good when I left though.

Edit: you know when you’ve done good work, but think “Maybe just one more coat of contrast” . I think I may have gone just a little two far.

Still looks good to me though. Some more details to work on, finish the weapons.

The big questions I have with the scheme are
1. Backpacks. I have seen black backpacks as standard and I have seen red as standard. I think I’ll stay red so that I can do the symbols and insignia in black.
2. Helmets. I was never a fan of doing the yellow, blue and red helmets for the different squads . I might do the gold for honor guard, but that I think will be it.
3. Black shoulder trims on regular troops as a throw back to the Heresy Era. I’m for it. I think with Rowboat back and rethinking the Codex, I think there is room to return to some older traditions.

What do you guys think?

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/03/04 13:46:06

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

My opinion is
1) Red backpacks
2) Coloured helmets --> Blood Angels canon heraldry doesn't use the squad role shoulderpads, plus having the occasional yellow and blue will help break up the red.
3) Black shoulder trims --> Blood Angels canon heraldry shows company heraldry through coloured blood drops on their shoulders anyways, where normally squad

Hard to tell on the phone red seems a little rich/deep for your typical blood angel but that doesn't mean it looks bad.

I like when other people do the colored helmets on their squads although I have never done it myself.

space Marines squad markings confuse me so I can't offer you much there!

I lean a little towards black backpacks to break up the colors. But red works too, especially with black trim elsewhere. And your red looks very nice. Most GW reds look flat to me, the BA contrast red helps that a lot.

Helmets- ditch the multi-colored insanity. It looks awful, and no throw-away lore is worth making the models look awful.
They came up with that 'official' scheme during 2nd edition (when they still weren't even sure about the concept of official color schemes), and the 'Eavy metal painters were _obsessed_ with bright primary colors, regardless of what they looked like. Its a bad legacy worth rejecting.

Black trim looks good, breaks up the relatively big surface the pauldrons bring to model.

Your all troublemaker , Graven is just the king of them, it comes from having kids and needing an outlet .

I tried a second model, no pics because I am tired and not thinking well, but I think just one coat of the Blood Angels Contrast is the route to go and I left off the skeleton horde contrast on the second and third guy, so we will see how that looks tonight when I get home. The second guy was a brighter red than the first and I think will be the course for the rest of the army. While I want them to be a darker scheme overall, I want that to come from the secondary color (Corvus Black) being used on all the trim and tactical heraldry. I may go for the colored blood drops for company colors, but with them all being Primaris marines and this being a crusade force I'm not sure IF I'll do any company markings at all in lieu of a campaign badge instead.

So that leaves my answers to
1. Red backpacks, Black ones seem to be part of the current Flesh Tearers pattern more, and I want a wave of Blood crashing onto my enemies.
2. Red helmets as the normal. I think Voss really shoved me with whole 80's GW comment. I'm definitely not doing green base trims either . Sanguinary Guard may get Gold, but Otherwise I think Red with no veteran markings on helmets.
3. Black Trims and Aquilas as a silent reminder to all the battle brothers that the Black Rage has endured and is affecting the Death Company.

Oh and Damn the Lore , I want a Tycho Primarisized. I may have to find another Grecko-Roman hero to make as a Primaris for my own army to take our fallen brothers place. GW for killing him off. It was bad enough that they put him in a dreadnought close to the end.

Used my store credit to pick up 2 boxes of Death Company Intercessors. Assembled one box of them as regular intercessors.

You can see the difference between one coat and the two coats on the assault Primaris. The extra parts will get added to the extra assault intercessors from the second Indomitus box I picked up.

Gave them a zenith also highlight spray with black and white then a coating of Morghast bone.

Still need to drill out barrels and highlight the blacks.

Made mostly from a Sigmarine Prosecutor and bits from a spare Bladeguard Sgt and some bits off a blood angel bits sprue. I’m not sold on the sword yet, more bits diving is needed eventually.

Also did some work on the Blood Angels ride. I need to find some parts that were used for an old silly project.

Also been kitbashing assault Primaris marines and blood angel death company intercessors

I realize that I will probably never play the current edition of 40K because the rules make my head hurt. At this point I am just assembling models the way I like them and will find people eventually to play the game as a beer and pretzel game instead. Like the good old days .

The printer has been down for about a week, I haven’t made time to fix it, I might mess around a bit later tonight.

No the Militarum green was on the same system as the Black Templar I did. Coral black base, drybrush with Dawnstone and (longbeard if I had it) then the Militarum green. You could try using drybrushes of burgling green and underhive ash instead, though I might have used them over the Militarum green as final edge highlights . Sorry it was a test and I am notorious for not taking notes.

Thanks, I’ve seen some others done similar and the sigmarines fit size wise better with the Primaris marines too.

Threw some paint.

Not sure about the comets on the wings, they needed to be a different color than the rest of the gold, but I didn’t want to do red. I swapped out the sword as well as it I started sleeker than the last one. Also chopped up a jet pack to bulk out the wings.

I’m undecided on the color of the sword. I tried a bright yellow, but that looked bad with all the gold. Also I’m not a fan of OSL eyes, but I’m feeling the need to draw attention there as well.

Hmmmmm...
*starts comparing costs of slapping jetpacks on other Stormcast to be Sanguinal Guard*

$60 for 5 Guard, or $74 for 10 random Stormcast or $40-60 for 6 ETB Stormcast. Depending on the costs of the other bits, that could not only be a cooler conversion, but perhaps even a cheaper one.

Food for thought, thanks for the inspo!

Strangely, I can write rules forever, but reading rules I cannot. I read the 2nd ed rules and have skimmed over each new edition since. Incrementally, nothing has really changed. Fundamentally, the whole game is different now.

Sorry for radio silence. Too much going on. Twins had their 16th BDay and we celebrated at my moms house now that she has gotten her vaccine. The next day she was taken to the hospital with lots of pain and vomiting, gall bladder infected again, she’s stable now, but no surgery till infection is settled. Took day off from my hospital work to try and get stuff at the church taken care of, reopening the sactuary after 1 year of being out of it due to Covid and the lightning/fire.

Been frustrated with my Ender3 for a few weeks now, it keeps clogging, then today while cleaning it and getting more pissed off it dawns on me that it has to be a bad roll or length of filament . Changed the roll and so far everything is running smoothly. Sometimes I overlook the obvious, this is the first roll out of 15 rolls of my ESun filament to give me any troubles.

I have seriously considered taking a much overdue vacation from DakkaDakka. It’s not that there is anything wrong, just I keep feeling a pressure to visit every day and either post or respond, and it’s past the burn out point. I’ve looked back at some posts I’ve made recently and just don’t see the heart in it, so I think I need to take a break and refresh everything. That and seventh try to get a blood angel paint style to my liking hasn’t helped .

Back soonish.....I hope, but need the breather. Thanks chums for understanding.

Thanks Guys, Needed the break, I will still be very limited on my posts for a while, but I'm doing stuff when I can.

I got into the Bushido mood again during a sleepless night, so I painted up the newer Temple of Ro Kan models I got a while back.

Gah...seeing them on my big monitor instead of my phone is terrible

Then I put them next to my old painted models and , so I repainted the older models as the oranges didn't match and no cohesion between the groups.

pre-repaint

repainted

after the first sit down and painting the first two models I got a notification on my phone that GCTstudios was doing a 15% off sale in lieu of no Adepticon. So I may have ordered more Villagers and Kami during the sale. All of the models will work with the Temple faction, but most also work with my Minimoto and the Shiho faction I have as well.

Speaking of Minimoto, now that I have the Temple guys painted up (and found some dice for them at the local shop), I started painting the first model of the newest wave for Minimoto this morning. I should have some time tonight to keep working on them, and I will be repainting the older models as well.

Keep up the fight, just stay over there.

The church reopened yesterday for the first time in 1 year an one week. Between Covid and the fire we finally have the Sanctuary back with all new sound system, lights, floors and chairs. Positive feedback from all the congregation yesterday for Palm Sunday and the rededication of the church. I put in almost 80 hours between the two jobs last week, so I am completely wiped out, but the painting helped .

Blows dust off of thread. So it’s been a while, lots going on with work and family as usual. Just wanted to give a quick shout out as I may be back in the swing of things....soon.

Oh and it begins again.

Not a fan of AnyCubic right now as it took 2 weeks longer than it should have and multiple emails chasing down my order, but I got the photon mono, the wash and cure machine 2.0 and a 1Kg container of resin. Wonder where it will take me.

Thanks guys, I hope to shortly be back in full (fuller) form, still really busy times, just wanted to post as I actually was able to start printing last night.

Unfortunately it was a major failure. looks like my print stuck to the bottom of the vat instead of the build plate. I didn't have time to mess with it this morning, and probably not tonight either...sigh.

I've been quietly lurking, lots of cool things happening in the forums, and I have been contemplating the new AOS 3.0 (not really feeling it though). Bits of painting happening here and there, but mainly clearing the desk to get ready for the printer.

So, second attempt came out much better, different model though. Side by side with the best version I could get off the Ender3.

While I was happy with the Ender3 version (except the spear tip), the newer AnyCubic version is leagues better. The earrings on the Kirin are clear and smooth, no remanants of supports, which popped off in less than a minute compared to the hour or more it took me to disconnect the ones from the Ender. Lastly this is all one piece where the Ender version is at least two (might be a third, either Kirin with attached rider lower body with separate rider upper half, not sure if the spear was a third piece or not). Also this was just over 4 hours to print, if I remember correctly the Ender version took 10+ hours.

Anyway, it went through a wash cycle (I did 8minutes) and a cure cycle (10minutes). The next print has started and should be ready for me when I get home tonight from work, it’s only a 2+ hour print cycle for 5 guys. I can see a whole army getting done in no time at all.

All these models were pre-supported from Titan-Forge. The one that failed was me trying to do supports myself, so more videos need to be watched in my still really limited free time.

The joy with resin printing is you can CRAM that print plate full of stuff and the time taken to print is only set by the tallest piece. none of this FDM print times doubling by adding a second model... I hope you're good at Tetris

I wish I could get paid by AnyCubic, or at least get free resin .

Well while I was at work the handcannon guys got done.

After a bath and some curing I started the next batch, 2.5 hours later I had 3 archers

And a monk was done in the same batch.

The monk is part of the Titan-Forge Patreon welcome package, the others were parts from some of the 3 bundles I bought last year, just ported over to the new printer.

I figure all the gunners and archers can be mirrored which can give me 10 unique gunners and 6 unique archers. I might mirror the big rock hand so I could do a full elemental rising from the ground.

I think I’m giving AOS 3.0 a pass. GW is just writing rules to be too convoluted now, I’ll look at building these out as either (or both) for Oathmark and Kings of War, possibly The Ninth Age as well.

Also stupid Theo idea struck while detaching the supports....more on that this weekend....maybe.

The other thing that is useful to learn if you want more variation is a bit of blender to chop off parts and reposition them for a variation other wise you end up with just as many lefty folks which can look a bit odd as things like the gunners and archers would have been trained in one direction to rank up properly and not blind their neighbour

Here’s how I finally looked at it price wise. Last year, when I was getting furloughed, my wife said I needed something to keep me busy. Learning 3D printing was it, so I got an Ender3 and started down the road. It was under $200 for the machine and some filament. Great results, good terrain, not so great models. Resin was still way more expensive at the time and cleanup was more than I wanted to deal with. The AnyCubic Mono and wash and cure machine take up less than 3 sq ft of space, just too wide comfortably for my bookcase, but I could make it work, I just have to get a different power strip. Well worth it considering the army that I will build would cost far more to order.

JoshInJapan wrote:The new printer sure makes nice models. Will you be able to keep up with the painting? I guess you could recruit your kids to help...

I never kept up with painting models I bought, so that’s just an unreal expectation .

I might give it a go, but my desktop is 10+ years old and already struggling. Plus, while Time is slightly more available now, it really isn’t plentiful enough for me to start another new skill.

I really need another power strip set up for these machines. The biggest gripe I have is their plugs are gigantic and I can only get one plugged in on the power strip I have set up at a time.echnically I could get two, but then I have to undo my overhead light source and my power cord for my iPad charger , neither option is really great.

Just finished printing the Titan-Forge loyalty reward Samurai Bushi model. Needs to cure, but I forgot and unplugged the curing station to start printing some Oni .

He’s a big lad, next to a human for size comparison. His sword must hang off the base as it isn’t in the right spot, it just is longer than it should be.

The Oni I printed while I was at work is on the curing stand now. The mirrored version failed, we’ll have to check out more info on the computer to fix him later.

Lots of support failures caused the issue on the mirrored model, he will make a nice casualty model.

Quick check on those larger models, are those solid, or is Chitu making them hollow? If they are hollow, is there a drainage hole in them somewhere?

The first large model I printed kept weeping resin and then cracked as I didn't realise the slicer had hollowed it out for me and it ended up with a pool of liquid resin inside. Something to be careful of with larger items

After dropping at least 4 models down to the concrete floor I can tell you they are just as durable as the HIPS models like GW makes.

Some are hollow, some such as the model I am printing now were hollowed and perforated and pre-supported by Titan-Forge.

Playing with colors this morning, wanting a lighter color scheme than what I’ve seen online.

Also have been working on a Kirin color scheme. Perhaps it’s too light for what I’m working towards, but I will continue as I like how the monk turned out.

I find that if I'm not careful, it's very easy to get single tracked down one path, and either build the Mountain of Plastic Shame or watch cobwebs gather on the printer. To keep up with both takes focus, dedication to the hobby and a sense of balance.

Renaissance man , just realized it’s cheaper doing this than continuing to buy GW . The piles will grow until I die or I throw stuff away.

All settings are still basic AnyCubic original settings. It is also Pre-supported by Titan-Forge. I did it in the PLA last year, the shogun is also printed, he rides on top of it's head in a seated pose. The main buddy is pre-hollowed and has the drain holes in it to reduce suction and to allow the extra resin to escape. the whole thing can be printed on the Mono in just a weekend if done like I did and put multiple sections on the same build plate.

Some more prints to gawk at.

3 ninja, lion guy and chesty the samurai chick.
The weapons are really fragile, one ninja sword snapped when I was taking off the supports and it flew somewhere. The chesty lady had a failed print on her sword arm. I found some residue on the screen and removed it.

Also some guardians.

Their Spears did not print and had two failed shields, both in the same spot that I found the residue on the screen. Third guardian just finished printing and wash, about to cure him and his spear and shields looked like they came out good, pictures later.

Took a day off today, already worked at church for a few hours, so the remainder of the day looks like painting for me .

I'm afraid that will have to be a covert exchange program like the CIA. Rules are posted in the 3D printer subforum not to discus fight club.....or printer files.

Warboss_Waaazag wrote:The guardians look cool as hell. These models take to paint very well, too.

yeah, this guardian was a test piece, so I didn't even prime him , and had no issues with the paint sticking once he had been cured.

also decided white armor sucks and the Kirin was just too pale, so it got a bright shiny fire-kirin paint scheme.

I'm not a huge fan of the Anycubic workshop program, it just doesn't flow for me yet. It took far too long this morning to import and slice a buildplate full of ashigaru. To be fair, each Ashigaru is 4 parts, so it probably wasn't too bad . We will see the results when I get home, it was only a 2 hour and 15 minute print for 4 multipart models.

You're taking to the Anycublic like a duck to water, and churning out the good stuff. Fails will happen, the important thing is getting to know what causes them so you can mitigate it (usually more supoorts or higher exposure). Oh, and remembering to clean out the vat whenever there's a fail, though it sounds like you're doing that already.

A tip for when you get failures on the underside of arms and things: get a small bottle of Vallejo Plastic Putty. It's not sculptable like green stuff, but sets fairly fast and can hold at least some texture. It's no good for armour or anything, but for smooth shapes that just need the flat areas filling out or where a little bit of texture has been lost it's great for salvaging failed prints.

Very envious of the speed of the Mono printers, my regular Photon taking around 5-7 hours for 32mm minis is still keeping me swimming in prints, but being able to get a plate of minis done in an afternoon is just far better for the impatient!

Lovely work on the Fire Kirin as well.

aku-chan wrote:The Kirin is looking rather snazzy!

Thanks, he is a really nice sculpt, as is most of the Titan-Forge Dragon Empire stuff.

Speaking of which, the second print is completed, the first had a failed arm. Both failed to print pants that I could tell , o maybe she’s in a full body suit, but it doesn’t give that impression to me.

If she was in a body suit it didn’t help her as I tried to pop her off the paint pot and her leg snapped off at the ankle . My superglue isn’t holder her together either .

Anyways, Happy Father’s Day to all you blokes.

Yes , the Kirin . Though this lady could also be Mythical as I noticed she has pointy ears(well the one you can see is pointy like an fox).

anyway thanks to Flinty in the stargrave thread for pointing out the cute US4GI .stl file on thingiverse. Not really sure why I needed to print it, except wanting to have a whole horde of them to be a Stargrave version of a Tribble is just too fun of an idea. It had another version of it in the file, but I had another issue with the print sticking to the bottom of the tray, I'll print it's buddy at a later date.

also while cleaning and rearranging I found the dreadball Ref-Bot, who will somehow join my Stargrave crew once I get a chance to sit and read the book .

Seriously I thought I was going to be getting more time to do hobby things, but it seems like less productive time overall. I did get another bottle of resin, so I'll be printing again( actually the Us4GI is from the new bottle) and I have some large Data terminals printing right now, they will be done when I get home.

The Us4GI would look really cool at about 20% of that size dotted on bases here and there and as a horde covering a larger base for some sort of wandering tribble-like event

Ill have to shine the bunnies down to give the basing idea a go.

In the mean time I’ve had a Dreadful morning....in a good way.

Weapon arms (3 twin auto cannons are 23 minutes from finishing their print)

Need to start slicing some other weapons .

I think I’ve gone full Dorn now. Trying some other yellow options, the red Aquila will not be happening, it will be Yellow and Black all about.

Warboss, I may not die with the most toys, but I will have the largest pile of shame

Graven, no worries.....except it got more Dreadful a small I reprinted another set of the three dreads , also got the Ender going again making bases for them.

I decided to start assembling and start the basing for these guys.

This is just a basecoat with the Nazdreg yellow. Mantic is helping out with the basing by sacrificing some of their scenery pieces.

Have I mentioned the wife and child#3 are out of town . People wonder how I Canberra get more done. 4 hours of sleep, in working at church by 4 am, and the printer is going as nonstop as I can without buying another print head.

Off to paint as this print is finishing its wash cycle.

Though I love me some dreadnoughts, I never really noticed how huge the Leviathan Dreadnought is . Contemptors are already larger than washing mashing dreads and I had seen a redemption at the local shop and thought it was stupid large. I had to double check to make sure I had not printed this guy at the wrong scale. Turns out they are supposed to be this flipping huge .

The legs are washing as I type. The claw arm failed it’s print , but I’ve seen other options which will suffice .

Leviathans are definitely chonky bois. As befitting their formerly very beefy statline. They are still pretty solid in-game, but not the holy terrors they once were.

Already churning out a Battle Company's worth of Dreadnoughts! Wasn't until the very end of my first bottle of resin that I dared go much bigger than regular 32mm minis!

Always enjoyed the Leviathan design, how it doesn't stray too far from 'Murder Box on Legs' while having a little more complexity than the regular Dreads. Hmm, do I need to print one?

anyway thanks to Flinty in the stargrave thread for pointing out the cute US4GI .stl file on thingiverse. Not really sure why I needed to print it, except wanting to have a whole horde of them to be a Stargrave version of a Tribble is just too fun of an idea. It had another version of it in the file, but I had another issue with the print sticking to the bottom of the tray, I'll print it's buddy at a later date.

I've found three things helpful with the Anycubic to avoid sticking to the tray (bear in mind I only use the default printing software that comes with it).

1. Smear a little resin onto the print bed so it is tacky prior to starting your print
2. Very light sanding of the print bed
3. Medium bases or thicker. The light support option seems more likely to peel away than the medium. It can still peel at the edges depending on the weight distribution of the model (i.e. very thick or heavy items can cause the based to peel away, and thus warp the print).

i.e. the blue base the model is supposed to stick to, I roughed mine up ever so slightly and then smear it with a thin layer of resin several minutes before pushing go (just enough so it is tacky). Oh, and also check recommend layer thickness for the different types of resin. I've found one that works for the clear green, and just run with it.

Thanks Guys

Unfortunately my return was poorly planned. I thought I was going to have so much more free time . Right now I get about 30 minutes if I am lucky which is just enough to remove the print from the printer, get it into a bath and run it for 10minutes, clean the build plate and start the next print while I move the washed prints onto the curing platform and start it up. Great for production, bad for overall hobby joy as the pile continues to grow.

So waking up at 2 am I tried to find a .stl file and I fell into a treasure trove of goodness. The next 2 hours were filled with frantic downloading of files before they disappear forever to the banestick of GW lawyers. It took 2 hours because my system is so old and I need to do some system clean up and delete old files and Organize. I should slap myself for thinking the extended weekend (Happy Break away from our English Overlords weekend, which coincides with the anniversary of my birth ) will give me any time. We have my daughters Highschool graduation party Saturday after my work at church, then I am sure a weekend of explosions and BBQ will be following that.

The computer cleanup will need to happen soon so I can cut up LARGER prints, as the tracks for a certain tank do not fit on my buildplate currently. The hull printed last night, my first completely full buildplate, The hull maxed out the height of printing and I will have to patch the back of the tank to make it look like it wasn't directly on the buildplate. The hull did have one bad spot on it, not sure what caused it, but all I can call it is a gash across the side. should be easy to disguise.

What tank you may ask? Well that would be an Unwell Karen

Edit: got home andthe lid for the photon was ajar, so the print didn’t start . Anyway, the second Unwell Karen will wait a while. I started on the punisher turret just now. Here’s the first Hull with the damage I was saying.

Have you ever had that time in hobby I gotta when you spend 4 hours trying to figure something out and then in your frustration you throw something and hit an object that will solve your problem? I can now say that I have.

I wasted some valuable time last night trying to figure out how to split the .stl file for the sicaran tracks. Downloaded two different programs and used the two I already had to try and do something to print these on the AnyCubic. I got so frustrated that I threw a pen I had to write stuff down with and it hit the Ender3 at the corner of the desk . The treads are not that detailed and the print bed will allow me to actually print both sets of tracks instead of only half of one side. Sometimes I get on one track and just wont move from it even with a train barreling down on me.

Anyway, the tracks for the Unwell Karen will be done tomorrow morning and I’ll immediately start a second set.

In the mean time, the legion continues to grow.

I think I should recommend a full nights sleep after your daughter's party, so you can celebrate your birthday and independence day with a clear head and perhaps avoid some of that frustration...just a thought.

Well last night I only got about 2.5 hours of sleep due to indigestion, so a good night sleep tonight is called for. Of course fireworks started a few days ago since....Americans like to blow up, so probably won’t have too much rest tonight.

Tomorrow is more work at church and then an afternoon of celebration and bbq. I am off Monday, the hospital knows people will be recovering from late night festivities, so it’s a holiday. Christian hospital that doesn’t celebrate Easter, but does celebrate 4th of July . It will allow me to sleep in on Monday too.

Not sure if 24 guys count as a wall or not, but another Contemptor May tip the balance.

Also first set of tracks printed on the Ender for my pair of Sicairins.

Thinking about why the splits happened on the resin bodies, I believe it was suction by not having vent holes higher up on the prints. If/when I print another resin larger model I will need to leave air gaps to prevent those. You can’t see the gaps on this one as it is.

Next to the tank you will see my newest dilemma. I was printing some gun arms and things went bad . I had just filled the vat before this and by he time I noticed it had all been turned into a block of resin. I will delete and remake this file later just Incase it is corrupted, but there is some damage to the FEP, I have new ones on order, they will be in Thursday.

Trying a new paint style/scheme for the fist, test subjects.

I'd do a print of torsos and legs, then get Oooh Shiny syndrome and print, I dunno, a dragon, a bust and a small horde of goblins before realising I had a bunch of half-finished armless marines

That yellow is looking really solid. What's your process?

I should redo the tracks at a higher resolution as I can see layer lines , and I just got home from fireworks to realize the Ender ran out of filament during the 17hour print, so starting He second set of track over again . I’m wasting big chunks of lots of stuff.

Paradigm wrote:Ouch, that block of resin must hurt! Amazing progress on mustering the Legion though, that takes discipline I definitely don't have! That’s where I’m at right now, mostly armless marines and I’m still looking for MkIII backpacks and helmets. I do wind up switching back and forth a lot, even chapters, but I stopped my Asian prints to do marines and I had ave some more Necron things to do as well. I definitely need another printer .

So before I left I assembled another contemptor, and added a boarding shield and Phobos bolter and arms to one of the bodies.

I found a file of Dorn, so starting him now.

This most recent yellow is something I saw on YouTube. Prime white, agrax earthshade the joints and rivets. Casandora yellow everywhere you want yellow. Paint the rest as you would normally, though on the dread I used basilicum grey for the metals aethermatic blue for the volkite and plasma and black Templar for the helmet and fist emblem. The yellows need a second layer of casandora yellow. The mkiii suit had two layers of the yellow and looks better in my eyes. I then drybrushed the yellow with hexos palesun. It was actually really simple, I’ll see how it looks on the tank next most likely.

Oh I am wasting more resin than getting actual use out of it . I printed a squad of MKII marines, but they are small, even to old rogue trader beaky marine standards. Also printed Rogal Dorn twice, but between super heavy amounts of supports and him also being smaller than a marine and really delicate parts breaking off I'll have to print another one.

The Ender has finished the second set of tracks this morning and is attempting to print a body of a third Sicarin tank. I need to clear my head and realize I can do hybrid kits with all the big things being in FDM and the smaller parts being in Resin to grab details better.

A good trick for scaling minis in the slicer is to grab the .stl of something you've already done and load it into the build plate next to your new prints. It might not be too precise, but I find that at least being able to eyeball the file in the slicer and have a printed version of it in hand at the same time alerts you to any major scale discrepancies ahead of a print. You can also just load in a rule, base or even a 1" cube for rough estimates.

For more geometric stuff like Marines, it might be worth grabbing a cheap set of calipers if you don't have any, that'll give you very precise measurements of some actual Marine minis to scale the prints to.There is also the rabbit hole of using the scalability of digital files to fix Marine proportions a bit, but that's a whole other thing and probably not ideal for building a full army.

Just don't do what I did the other day and mix up size in mm and %, leaving one of my DnD players with a 4' mini for their 6'5" hobgoblin fighter! Reminded me of the very squat Wolverine you'd see in old comics actually!

. Well Dorn I just figured would be the correct size of a primarch and didn't even bother to adjust him. Then the second time I made him 1/3 larger which I think was too much, but the supports accidentally got switched to heavy thickness which integrated itself into the print . I started a third try this morning at 25% larger with smaller supports only to have the system crash on me when it was slicing .

I walked away before things got broke.

The problem I am having is more that I am rushing everything, and not watching what I am doing. I need to slow my role and do it right the first (fifth) time.

Frustrated by lack of time. I’m giving up on Dorn for now, too many issues with the file, the fine details are still too fine and snap off when you look at them, and there are straight up lines throughout that cause problems and don’t get me started on the cape .

Did a little painting, not much progress.

It’s actually brighter than what it looks like here, Go Go Nuclear Yellow.

Also found a set of files for a certain Primaris Super Heavy.

It will join nicely with the tank Battalion that is forming slowly.

Theophony,

That boarding shield would be great for Arbites in Necromunda.

Yes, doing one large print or two at the start of a new batch of filament...then shifting to smaller models later would prevent the failures of a large model in progress.

My two cents,

CB

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2021/07/14 22:06:04

Post by: Theophony

The boarding shields are great, I just have to reposition them next time on the buildplate so the Aquila symbol doesn’t get supports on them .

If those tanks make your heart flutter, you better tell the wife to get the paddles ready.... the other ones .

The Astreaus is coming along, a little set back with the second side, I think it needed at least one more punch hole in it a second I believe the damage was caused by suction/ full contents of resin weight.

Would make some nice battle damage, or terrain.

Also I got a bit of painting done on the contemptuous one.

Not sure how I feel about the brass/gold, it’s just agross dunes contrast over the yellow. It might get redone in actual gold later.

Also, not sure how much time I have left. My free time is very minimal, and though my kids are slightly more self reliant with driving and stuff, family time is eating everything up. I like the work I'm seeing here- knew getting into 3d printing I'd want a resin printer one day specifically for figures, you're acting as the recon scout/sniper finding out- and more importantly, publishing- what works and what doesn't for the rest of us. The resin and filament expended in getting better means you'll be more efficient and cost-thrifty down the road.

Very sorry to hear of the troubles for you and yours, it truly makes my own small difficulties seem that much more minor. I wish the best for all of you and that your Higher Power as you define them takes a special interest in healing.

I know the 'spinning up' feeling of trying to get a print running right, so I can slice the next file, so I can just get a little painting in and 'Yes dear, I'll take the trash out right now'..... I had to stop trying to run prints for a week- just fiddle with painting, to get my heart rate back down. Your work is coming along beautifully and there's no need to rush.

As others have said, please don't worry about responding to every message or even logging in to Dakkadakka every day to check- do what's needful, then if there's time what's nice. You're one of my oldest friends here and I gain strength for my own hobby woes from your enthusiasm and talent for the art.

We'll see ya when we see ya!

Thanks guys,

A half hour after making the last post in here, my brother (recently out of the hospital), took his wife to the ER. Gallbladder , kept overnight to calm it down, put on a really restrictive diet to reduce the liver over the next week, and scheduled for surgery this coming week.

I will be going dim, if not completely dark for some time. Son has Volleyball training over the next couple weeks and his twin sister is in a lacrosse tournament this weekend (3rd place as of now with at least one game today possibly a second) and then a tournament Thursday thru Sunday this coming week up in Chicago, if it’s not cancelled due to the surge of Covid cases and Chicago locking down anyone from my state who comes for a visit who doesn’t have their shots. We all have ours.

Stay safe everyone.

Another quick drop and dash. Hectic life is Hectic . Lack of sleep gives me a little time to paint at 3am though .

I bought the Dominion box set as I really like the look of the newer Stormcast Eternals over the older ones. I still hate the heads, so all of them will be either no helmet or they will have this style helmet on them, which I have 3d printed at home.

Like that colour scheme a lot, between that and the helmet it's got a real feeling of continuity with Old World Imperial stuff. Less 'Sigmarine' and more traditionally Warhamer. Nice shiny armour as well.

Yeah, I have the same issuse, which is why I so rarely post pics these days outside of the monthly challenge. I keep teling myself that realistically, no one is going,to notice one errant splodge of colour or visible layer transition when they're just browsing for photos of cool minis, but I always find it really knocks my confidence when I spot stuff like that, especially since my vision went to crap. Amazing what a head swap can do - I really didn't like the new Stormcast when I first saw them but that model has changed my mind. Great paintjob has helped too

Thanks everyone, another quick drop. Mostly done with the banner. I think just some basing to do, possibly some stripes from the “rays”.

They really do look much better with the sallets don't they? I ended up sinking the helmets in a little though as the bottom of the face should be at least partially covered by the front of the armour. (unless they have giraffe necks ) The banner looks really good in those colours

Thanks everyone. Lots of work done today and also plenty of free time to paint.

I am really feeling this scheme. Special thanks to the man Duncan Rhodes, as I shamelessly pilfered these colors from his recent video on how to paint the Conquest 100 kingdoms knights of something or another.

Also finally watching Game of Thrones on my own while painting, so lots of good times this weekend.

Great work with all the Stormcast, the scheme is very cool. I was gonna go with metallic blue for mine, but the silver knightly armour has a great look. And damn you for showing those printed helmets. I don't even dislike the normal ones, but these are so cool

Progress isn’t progress no matter how little occurs.

Preators and Vindicators

Plus assembled the last of the characters and their gryph -hound

One major thing I have struggled with is buying stuff before my last project is done. It derails me every time. I have started dozens of armies in dozens of games, only to never finish one. I have been wanting to buy more to add to this army already, so far I have stopped myself. Hopefully I can restrain myself and finish up this half of the Dominion box set. If I can do that then I will look at buying the next box (either another Dominion Box, or the one that has the troops and the terrain). I still have not decided if I will keep or sell/trade off the KreulBoyz. While they can fight with all the Orruk I have, I still am undecided on their fate.

Excellent progress and fun to watch everything come together!

"One major thing I have struggled with is buying stuff before my last project is done."

This. So much this. For my first couple of years here on Dakka I was fairly good about following this rule. Then I found Kickstarter and was afraid some things would 'get away' before I was actually done with the current project. Of course, once you break a rule, it gets easier to break it some more. Now the rule is (to try to) work on only one project at a time. LOER helped me violate that one, as I'd try to complete an entry plus finish whatever I was working on before.

I'm slowly getting back into the groove and wrapping up a bunch of things that have been sitting around half-finished. Part of the delay is 3d printing: once I replaced the Ender with a machine that actually worked it was easy to lose an entire evening just fiddling with .stl files and getting a good first layer laid down. And certainly part of the problem was just less time to give to the hobby- it's been a very strange last 18 months.

Thanks for the updates and the inspiration, Theo- rock on!

Thanks everyone , I have been able to keep myself from buying anything new and derailing these guys. It’s been hard, but being too busy has kept me on the path.

Here is the horde

Close ups of a couple of spear and shield.

I think they all will be this blondish ginger haired color.

And the preatorians are in the back.

Still have the Lord and the wizard to do as well as the Gryph hound. After that then I will have to start considering the next step/purchase.

They don’t actually look like Stormcast Eternals anymore. They look very much like they could appear in any fantasy game setting from D&D to even historical (if the proportions weren’t so “heroic”).

Top effort. They look fantastic.

Thank you all for the high praise. The only modifications have been the helmet swaps. I have looked at trying to find some suitable plumes for the helmets, but nothing I have found holds my attention. Plus the next biggest issue I have with SCE is all the bling. I know people joke about the space marines having skulls and scrolls and papers and blood drops everywhere, but SCE outdo them. They have lightning bolts, lions faces, some have bear faces, sigmars face is on these new guy’s shoulders and shields. They have death masks and halos of spikes, exaggerated trims and pecks, scalemail and plate with leather straps. There is just way too much, so dropping the deathmask and halos were a simple way to reduce clutter. Now they look more rank and flank. The parchments are way too big and flappy for my tastes, but they are in places where it’s not always viable to remove them, so they all stay.

Anyway, a little progress, unfortunately I jumped away from the new guys to work on an older SCE character, but I quickly realized that I really dislike the old style so much. Angled armor on the steed , while there is perfectly good articulated plates on its neck and tail they decided to put the cardboard box form the refrigerator on its shoulders and hind quarters . I’ll never understand.

I know the color of the dracoth doesn’t work with the SCE, but I like the beast more than the guy riding the soap box derby armor.

At least the Gryph hound is done. I don’t understand why the lord wears its father as a cloak

Also some big changes may be coming soon. Sorry for not having time to post, hopefully that is part of the changes.

I agree, after working on the new Stormcast, the old ones are terrible, both in proportions and style. I don't mind the scrolls on the new ones... you'd hope not anyway, given that I added more

You can see the Gryphound doesn't look all that pleased to see his master wearing that cloak, it
's got such a WTF look on it's face

On finishing projects I've got 4 pieces of advice-
1 Armies or Collections? An army is enough models to play a game with a collection is all the models of that type you own. I've got quite a few armies completed but have rarely completed collections and this isn't something to worry about as I enjoy adding new models to old armies.
2. All or Nothing. You seem to be very all or nothing you seem to try and paint complete armies at once. Getting them all to one stage and go off to another project leaving you with two half completed projects. A more productive technique might be to try and paint less models from one project at once but to try and take models from several projects through to completion. Currently I keep 8 batches on my desk from various projects (now a Myrmourn Banshee, Reaper Pterodactylman, Warrior Maiden archer, Conan character, Spaceship, Frostgrave Merc 4 Landsknecht and 4 Hoplites) This is slower progress on 7 projects but I'm progressing all these models through to completion rather than abandoning any models halfway.
3. Going Back. You seem to enjoy a variety of projects. Maybe going back to an older one rather than starting a new one will give you the variety you enjoy.
4. Paint Models not Armies. Focus on finishing individual models more than whole projects. Getting 50 or 60 models done is far more repetitive than doing one stage on 5 or 6 models. This can also give you models getting finished at different times encouraging you to push through the annoying parts on another model.

@Endtransmission: yeah he sure does have the look of “withmy size I’ll be luck if I’m his sock”
@llamahead: Good points all around.

Well, so some progress.

The Lord was done Wednesday night, just didn’t take a picture until now. Fairly happy with him.

And with the Loremaster completed that is the SCE half of the Dominion box painted up.

This is a first for me. Not only a completely painted force (over 1000 points) that is field able and from one army, but one that is current (not a 10 year old game system). Plus I want to do more and actually field it in a game of the system and edition it was made for . I am really actually proud of myself right now.

They still need basing completed, but they are all to the same level and I need to figure out some basing method that I want to use, but done and playable . I guess they should get sealed .

Next steps? The battletome comes out shortly, plus they are soon to release more of these sleeker SCE including more characters, archers, a chariot, more Annihilators and vindicators with two handed swords. Plus Dragons . Not too keen on the big Dragons, but the SCE riding dragons look great in my book, I just need to start contemplating what color to make those dragons.

Not to get off course, but do I keep the other army from the Dominion box or do I trade them? I could probably get good $$$ from them at the FLGS, which will help fund the SCE, but they fit with all the Orruks I already have and their battletome comes out at the same time. I like some of their big monsters, but the rank and file guys don’t do much for me. They would get non-standard paint schemes, possibly even humanism flesh colors .

Also one of the first other tomes coming out is supposedly Maggotkin, I have a large horde of their models as well. see, this is how everything falls apart.

Really it’s all just to take my mind off an interview I have tonight. I’m pretty sure I have the job already if I want it, but it’s just another New step. Benefits are fantastic, but it might be a pay cut, which is not an option right now. But one of the benefits is free tuition at the University for my kids in 3 years. The twins will just have graduated high school at the time and we have some saved up for Jr college, but then they would get full reimbursement from one of the top not Ivy League schools in the country. Plus one of their specialties is what my daughter wants to do....for 6 years .

Getting an army done is an achievement in and of itself, the fact they look great is a nice bonus! Hope you can get a game in soon, and that The Curse of Fresh Paint doesn't hit your dice too hard (though maybe you ought to print a Dice Jail just in case... )

Looking forward to the Stormcast Dragons if/when you get them, they are pretty great models. As for the Kruleboyz, if I were still an army-building man I'd be keeping them just as an excuse to field that epic vulture-wyvern thing their big boss comes on...

Best of luck with the interview and any changes that come with it!

Thanks guys, lonely thing still to settle is pay, hopefully that works out. Kept me up lat night, totally out of my control until I get an offer though.

In the mean time, my old scheme for the Orruks still wasn’t hitting a chord with me, so a couple test models have been worked on.

The main reason for the change is I’m still torn on the Kruleboyz. If I do keep them, the blue wasn’t going to work out for me, so new try on the Orruks, I think they will work on the Kruleboyz if I keep them. So before I buy anything else I think I’ll work on the mountain range of shame.

Need some ideas from you lot on Page 100.

1. Blow $100 on XYZ army
2. Get 100% done on another Start Collecting set
3. Something else?????

Number 1 is kind of a given every so often, so doesn't feel especially special.
Number 2 will take time to achieve, so not really a page 100 sort of task, but might be fun to see how quickly it could come together.

You guys are hilarious. I've NEVER finished an army in my 30+ years . These SCE are about the closest I have ever come to a fully painted force in my life. There have been some skirmish games that have fully painted bands: Necromunda, BattleTech and Bushido, but no fully painted Space marine armies or the like.

I might dig out some models, but 100 is pushing it

I think I might have a 100lb hobby weight loss challenge . Sure I could easily lose 100+ pounds myself, I think I could also lose literally 100 pounds of plastic, cardboard and resin that is cluttering my basement. There are so many projects that have been started and I have no intention of going back to them anytime....soon...or ever. Old White Dwarfs which while fun to look back on occasionally, they are just weighing me down and taking up more room than anything.

The other option which I am leaning towards is 100 days of Pain (T). Similar to the US Presidents first 100 days in office, I will do a concerted push for the 100 days following page 100 to paint something every day. As of right now that would take me to roughly Thanksgiving here in the US. Sort of a nice starting and ending point.

I will take some pictures of some models, but currently there is lots of actual piles of things, good and bad that need to be moved before any of that can begin.

While I think I have 100 snotlings from Mantic, that’s not the plan

Forgot the iPad at home today, had taken pics of the Orruk Brutes I have started.

Theres two more that haven’t made it to the gallery for some reason . Anyway, this is the scheme I’m going with. Still a bit to do on them yet, but close.

It's either Deathworld forest green or Deathguard green (I'll check tonight when I get home but pretty sure the former), Drybrushed with Nurgling Green, then Washed with aethonian Camoshade. In the two test guys I did I then hit their eyes, nose, mouth and inside of ears with reikland fleshshade.

Was DakkaDakka Down for everyone today? This is the first time since last night that I have been able to get on today.

I took the pre-employment WizQuiz last night, no worries there. Still no start date set, but I did have my 4th visit from my current bosses upper big wigs this week. Each one has come in offering me the same position that I had been offered previously (6 months ago) to stay. It feels great knowing that they really want me to stay and all the buttering up they did verbally, but somehow it feels bad that none of them knew that the others had alreasy offered me that position and I have turned it down over and over again. At least the Lady today understood how the new job is still in the same building and getting my kids free university schooling in a few years. They (old job) didn't even offer me more money . One of the Nurses at my office is trying to schedule my going away party, it will be funny if I start Monday at the new place and no time to set up the party in between.

Page 100 looks to be on official hold . My mother in law has changed her surgery schedule to this week , which means she will be moving in as she also decided not to go to a rehab facility. My youngest daughter has decided to move into the unfinished basement instead of sharing her room. The biggest cluster is she could have done this over the summer when the kids weren’t in school and they could have helped, but school starts for them on Monday .

This means my painting area and models are all being haphazardly boxed up for now.

Yes. My wife is also trying to break the news to me slowly that this might be a permanent addition . I know Grammy has been having issues lately, but she has fallen a couple DOZEN times in the last week, all news to me. Once again we are the only children who can handle bringing her into the house as one brother in law has his own health issues and their mother in law to take care of and the other brother in law just recently divorced and has a two bedroom apartment which he just moved if girlfriend in with him.

Hopefully the hip replacement allows her to bounce back quickly, but other issues have become more apparent as this has occurred. Luckily Lilly is really looking forward to moving into the basement. Not sure she will enjoy it once she tries it out, but we will have to see how it goes.

Congrats for the 100th page! I'll be waiting to see your next projects when you'll get to them, those Orruks looked ace!

Grandmas under the knife right now. She qualified for a procedure that actually has people up and walking on the new hip the same day, even just hours later . Hopefully she bounces back quickly. Not only to get her out of our house, but because she loves her freedom and ability to get out and about.

Plus I really want my basement painting area back . I was just getting into a good spot with hobby skills feeling good and such.

So 100 pages. I had to try and come up with something, still struggling, but I went back to my old thread which I had locked. The older one went to page 198, but on page 100 I had purchased a couple of Leviathans from Dreamforge Games.

Even had him wired with lights.

Fantastic kit that allows the model to be reposed with the friction fit parts and the arms swap back and forth.

I am not as thrilled now with it's old paint scheme, but I believe I still have one unassembled which might be a good project. I could also assemble the resin version from years before that and possibly have these guys as a Knights army for 40K.

One of the kits I was unable to get back then were the female troopers that they put out for the Eisenkern. But luckily Marc has had them remastered by WGA and have just begun shipping, so I may have to grab a few of them to go with the other troopers I have. The scale is nice and the armour looks just good enough for a soft vacuum suit, so maybe make a Stargrave crew from the troopers. Not really a great plan, but I think a few chops and alternate heads and we can have a few non-human crewmembers and cyborgs. Possibly throw in some of the BtGoA Concord and Algoryns for good measure. It's a culmination of a few different lines, but might just do the trick.

While I'm contemplating things, I am still on the edge about buying a subscription to the Warhammer+ APP. The animation isn't that great, but thinking about it some more it's actually a decent deal. If I buy the 1Year subscription $59.99 American money by 08/31/21 and keep it thru 10/01/21 at least then I get a $16 GW Voucher. If I keep the app for one year, then I get a Free exclusive model (I'll take that Warboss please) which the normal stock one is $40.00 and I don't think they will charge shipping for it, so between those two things I have $56 of my $59.99 back, plus I get access to the 40K app and the soon to be reforged AOS APP. Still not completely swayed, but most likely will get it by this weekend.

So What do you guys think about the Stargrave Idea for a crew? Has anyone looked at the rules for a plan themselves? I hear Grenade Laucher is a pretty good choice and luckily they have those on the Eisenkern sprue .

I was able to get a box of the Eisenkern Panzerjaegerin a couple of years ago before they went out of stock everywhere and highly recommend them for EVA assault troops. I painted them up as the squad that rides around in the Athena C2V. The kits are excellent, with a lot of extra parts to let you customize the look you want. I hadn't thought of them for EVAs before, but your right- the pauldron and backplate leave a rim that looks very much how an exo-atmospheric helmet would lock onto, plus the head variants come with closed helmet, beret and (if I remember right) a couple of open face helmets as well. I ordered another box when Wargames Atlantic announced they were running the series again.

The weapons choices alone in the kit make them very versatile: heavy MG42 looking anti-tank rifles, SMGs, grenade launchers, panzerfausts, the lot. The backpacks even look 'outer-space-ish', add some maneuvering rocket venturis and you've got full-EVA troops for sure.

Looking forward to seeing what you make of them, if you go that route.

From what I remember, the backpacks housed a field generator and they would Drop into the combat zones. I looked at a crew builder app and thought I might make the leader a Veteran and his second officer a biomorph. Picturing Goose from Galaxy Rangers .

I subscribed yesterday and I'm not sure what the complaint is about the animation. Sure, it's not Marvel's What If or Studio Ghibli level, but the episodes are all pretty good. Old Bale Eye is probably the weakest of them so far

Okay, so thinking about the subscription I am leaning further away from getting it. The model comes after 1year, which is too long of a turn around for me with kickstarters, and I’m not really THAT impressed with it. I enjoy the lore more than anything, but there are enough others doing those videos and battle reports. Access to the AOS app is about the only thing I would want, but that’s just not enticing enough for me.

In other news, I started the printer up again today. Newfocus of only printing one item at a time until the next is painted.....sort of. I am printing a slew of helmets for the Stormcasts as a couple guys at the shop like mine.

I saw this guy on Facebook and had to print him for a second Warchanter for the Ironjawz.

While he was being washed and cured I assembled the Kruleboyz special sprue.

Guess they will be joining the Ironjawz after all, I was thinking no at first, but their style is growing on me.

Thanks guys. I think I have a drummer, or the options for one with the ‘Ardboyz. Not sure there would be a Keytar player or Bassist, but I’ll look for some files. Wasted weekend of waiting around for roof repair guy. Bad storm today so water just poured into our family room. Luckily my mother-in-law is still at the rehab facility, so she wasn’t here trying to “help”. Starting my new job on Tuesday of next week, Monday is a holiday here in the states, so I get a 3 day weekend before starting.

I do not want to sidetrack myself but as I do not have a hobby area to work in currently I was looking at Bushido again . I really like some of the newer snake people in the Ito Clan, especially this new lady.

So I am probably going to place an order very soon.
To set them up nice I ordered some Micro Arts Studio Forest bases off of the Miniaturemarket sale that ended today.

I stopped by the local shop yesterday and was trying to get the owner to look at Bushido as an option. I have mixed feelings about the store as I have had good relations with some of the staff, but like yesterday I had a very ambivalent reaction from the owner. To the point he walked away while I was talking to him without a word or any sign that I was bothering him or he didn’t want to talk anymore. Frustrating. Not like there aren’t 5 other stores within 30 minutes of me that I could go to , this is just the closest. Anyway, sorry for venting.

Very nice fig, and there's lots of great generic Naga from reaper and as STLs that keep distracting me that level of customer disservice enrages me.

The Ito clan is full of Nagas, in fact the batch I’m going to order will have like 5 in it. They ar a clan that has been worshipping the Orochi, and they all are taking on aspects of snakes including the Blood of Orochi (poison in the veins), snake scales, spitting venom and a few guys who are reverse naga with snake heads and human bodies .

Akane (Model actually is very close to the art)

Kenzo

Yuui

Taisei

And the big snake themselves (Two HEads are better than one after all)
Yatsumata

All these years on DakkaDakka and I still screw up attaching pictures.

Long time little Dakka .

Whirlwind last two weeks. Sister started chemo, doing fine. Roof leaked, a lot, then literally crashed in on my head as i was taking pictures of it to send to the roofer. Mild concussion. Mother in law moved in post surgery on her hip, fell yesterday due to repair guys not keeping the debris confined, but nothing new broken. Ended my old job and started my new job , they still haven't given me computer access four days in and my trainer has been out all week with her husband having surgery and the other lady had taken today and yesterday off. Lots of phone answering and taking messages as I can't even do the training as that is part of the computer access that is restricted. Daughter started new Lacrosse season and she and her twin brother have both started the new school year. Both are also in an advanced school program where she will graduate high school with a clinical nursing license and he will graduate with auto mechanics certification, both alongside their high school diplomas. I'm sure there's more, but that's all my head can handle.

Back to page 100 stuff: Since all of this has waylaid me for a bit I was able to order the Dreamforge panzerjagers, I'll be picking them up tomorrow and hopefully get to assemble some this weekend. I have to organize that Stargrave crew sheet now. I also have to find some space dogs to print to go along with them. Probably nothing too outlandish as the troopers are pretty straight forward no nonsense looking figures.

Good luck Stargrave is great. Take it you ordered the Panzerjaegars from Wargames Atlantic? Be careful with the concussion as well, mild concussion is a mild brain injury after all....

Daughter is house sitting for a few days, so I can paint again without being yelled at for being in her area .

Not done by a longshot, but feeling good about the Gnashtoof.

I did pick up the Orruk rulebook, I have my eye on the mirebrute as well, but I have plenty on my desk as it is and a shipment of snakes are on a plane to me. Hopefully nick fury leaves them alone .

Thanks Graven , I had a hard time with choosing colors, but hopefully they all look “natural”

Thanks Cam, always glad to see you back and about.

So my wife and son just took grandma home . Big surprise as we thought she was moving in permanently, but the doctors gave her the green light to drive and take care of herself, so she is excited to go and see her cats. So hopefully that means my daughter will move out of my basement and back to her room and I can have all my space back.

In the mean time since daughter 2 is house sitting I got to paint before work this morning and a bit last night. I think Gnashy is all done, except for some basing. Point out anything I missed if you would.

Also I came home to a bunch of snakes in my house...which is great news.

The Ito Clan has arrived with the starter, the blessed bundle and more snake ladies than one should point a stick at.

I backed a Kickstarter called “Where legends stand” which is all 3D printed bases, comes with versions for toppers, magnets and square or GW new basing for 20 something styles. The files should download soon, but I might gust use the basing like I did for the Gnashtoof above for the Ito Clan.

Anyway, third week of the new job is done. First check, which isn’t much larger than my old job is in the bank, but it wasn’t even a full two weeks, so it should be better next time around . I only used a tank and a half of gas over two weeks instead of three tanks a week, so looking at saving close to $300 a month with this move and the insurance is so much better. Love the Doctors I work with, I loved most of the ones I was working with, but this crew is just so welcoming and we have a lot in common barring the age gap.

Also we have a Beep Baseball team , I might join it if it works with my schedule. Basically playing baseball blindfolded against a visually impaired team if I understand it correctly, sound fun and as we are the Ophthalmology Department it is a great outreach to people we serve.

More later as time permits. Also built some models for stargrave, but they will be back burnered until I paint up my Ito Clan.

Good to hear you're feeling positive and things are looking, cautiously, optimistic. I do love how dakkadakka is a community where we share our ups and downs.
And looking forward to your Bushido antics!
