The Grot Rebellion
The Grot Rebellion were my first ever heavily converted guard army project, full of a lots of humour and character the army won the ‘Best Army’ award at Open War 9 and have been put on display at Warhammer World's miniatures hall.
Feel free to browse the old galleries of the models in the army: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/227565.page
Anyway that was a long time ago and now I feel it’s time to revive the grots once more. The Grots have been out of action since 5th edition came out since I didn’t like the idea of losing the game on a roll of 5 or 6 when the dice was rolled. The army was built around suicide squads with the 3 vet squads and rough riders. But now that I have completed my Renegade Mechanicus Army it’s time to rebuild the rebellion.
What’s Gonna Change?
Well first off the original army was very infantry based, as you can see from the picture below there was a selection of characterful models for infantry, special weapons, grenadiers, rough riders and vets.
First off we’ll be a complete re-paint as the army was made before foundation and washes so I wanna try out painting a grot with the new stuff and see if it is an improvement on the old ones. If so I’ll be looking to redo the whole army.
The old codex allowed me to parachute the grots onto objective with the Drop Troops Doctrine but with that gone I’m going full mech with them.
At first I was trying to think of a way to convert chimera tanks, and then I remembered I had made a chimera conversion originally which was called the Doom-Vee.
The Doom-Vee was a fun looking model but sadly ineffective and un-needed in the old codex so it was quickly replaced with the heli-cookas 2 deep striking sentinels with heavy flamers. Of course changes need to be made to the old model such as changing the weapons: the old model had the turret that counted as 2 heavy bolters now instead I plan to add a chimera turret on the top to make it easier to recognise and add a flamer at the front, perhaps were the lights are on the left.
So what's on the assembly line?
Command Squad,
Pysker, Battle Squad,
4X Vet Squads,
5X Chimeras,
Banewolf,
2nd Grot Missile Platform,
3X Squig Tanks,
2X Hydras
And a set of Objective Markers.
All of which I can't wait to build. Especially the Doom-Vee Chimera which will be suprising cheap thanks to the 'Leman Russ Upgrade Sprue' GW have released for £8.
Anyway I look forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions?

Da First Wave; New & Improved
First models off the line are the standard grot troopers, When the grots came out the foundation and washes were not out and I used drybrushing and watered down paint to complete the Original Models. Since then I've become a better painter since I did the original models but despite that the skin detail still appears too flat and dark for my liking so I asked my friend Alex for some help and received a lesson in 'blending'.
Now the grots look brilliant the skin is far better and they look like grots instead of small orks. Now for another 30. Its certainally a big boost to my painting skill.
Grotsnik Leader Of The Grot Rebellion
Along with the troopers Cononel Grotsnik is also back and with some new weapons, and since he was one of my favourite conversions I couldn't refuse when Alex offered to repaint him for a Xmas present, gotta say he's done it justice.

Grot Ninjas
At first I had trouble on deciding on a objective marker theme, because the army was mobile I thought it be a good idea to make the objectives look mobile. I was going to do the servo-squig idea but that would require too much work, though I may try it at a later date.
In the end I decided to go with 5 grot ninjas that act as scouts for the rebellion, each one on a 40mm base acting out a scene to avoid them being confused an actual unit.
The one on the left is called 'Dienamek Entry!' not bad for my first attempt at diorama. The one of the right features a ninja spraying propaganda on terrain.
"Dem Ninjas are da best boyz in da rebellion, dey real fast and extremlee sneekie dat and dey can fight real good, so I av'em look for enemies for da rebellion to stomp!"

More Grots
I thought rather than uploading squad after squad I'd upload the different types of models. So here are the grot sergeants, I've decided to make the armour black like my the veterans from the first army so they stand out more.
They were going be armed with lasguns but I was lucky enough to find some old laspistols in my bits box.
Also I've finished another squad; this is what all the squads will look like one sgt in black and 3 special weapons. It was suggested I outline the marking with black so they don't just look like white blobs.

Freakin epic. Always had a soft spot for gobbos/grots, and this is just awesome.
Would be great to convert some squigs to serve as assault troop type units, cc monsters, literally. Also, runtbots would be great too. Would provide a lot of variety and still keep the theme perfectly!

The Banner Waver
As always I like to have some themed objective markers in my army. For my 'Capture & Control' 40mm objective I first began looking at something that looked mobile like a small refueling tank or vehcile with a large banner on it.
In the end I decided to just use the original banner waver from the command squad, it's a fantastic model. I don't want to remove it from the army however I can't justify that banner being able to fit in a doom-vee door so an objective marker was the best role for it.
I've also added some smalled details like the grot and even Grotsnik's pet squig Commissar Nibbles.

I'm planning to make a pysker battle squad for games of 1750pts because their always fun to play with. The whole squad is built using night goblin and empire wizard bits.
Once again my friend Matthew Green helped me with the green stuff sleeves.
This guy was going to be used as an astropath so I painted him by himself. I'll complete the rest of the Weirdgrot Squad later in the project, after I've got some tanks built.

Comms & Squigs
Well as I found out in a game with another guard player from my club an Officer Of The Fleet can be very useful so I'm getting on for games of 1750pts and here he is...
I did consider converting one of the grot ninjas with a radio since it would most likely be them holding up enemy reinforcement, but I felt this would confuse my opponent since they're already being used as my objective markers.
One recent idea I've had for sentinels is SQUIG TANKS after seeing this conversion and how it reminded me of a squig, I was going to use the little tanks but these would represent sentinels a lot better. I'm even thinking of wiring a squig into the hatch so the grots would have made a squig dread, but I'm probably going to with a grot pilot.

THE GBH TANK
At last the grot rebellion are getting their tanks and the first one is the GBH Tank which stands for "Grot Bodily Health" or "Grevious Bodily Harm" depending on your situation lol, which will represent the Banewolf.
Originally I was going to make it another fast food tank like The Little Grot But early on I decided to make the army appear completely mobile; they've got food and the manticore I'm workin on at the moment is also the mek's workshop and this is their medical centre...
"Da Grot Doks are da best doks dey iz; dey make supa juice to make grotz stronger and da killest of poisons to kill da biggest enemies. It alwayz a gud idea to keep da doks nearby in da GBH tankz case a grot rebel loses a limb and needs a medik to sow it back on!"
I very pleased on how it came out especially the turret, I used an old white dwarf tutorial for the battle damage to make it looked used. Later this week I'll be adding a grot dok to go on the top of the tank behind the turret observing his nasty poisons at work.

Their just the old tank treads without the outer hull and no going all the way round.
Also thanks your friend for the comment, GW Staff has also praised me as a genius and requested the grots and my renegade mechancius armies be put on display in the Miniatures Hall for 3 months and the beginning of this year and of course I said yes

Dakka Tank Concept
With all the monsterous creatures and mech lists running about I thought it would be a good idea to consider a taking a pair of hydras. Especially since the army needs some long ranged anti-tank.
Anyway whilst looking for a cheap conversion since I have to build a 2 or even 3 of them I came up with this model concept using bits I had lying around;
Basically put a shortened leman russ turret and the autocannon sentry bits together model add a small window on the front of the leman russ turret for a driver window and mount the whole thing on a city of death tile and tracks, overall it could be a neat looking support tank. I can also switch the turret for a mortar to turn them into griffons.
I also saw what it looked like with the autocannon turret on at a GW store a while back and it looks like it could work, so I will most likely be building the dakka tanks in the near future.

The Grot Tek Tank?
Well another tank has rolled off the grot assembly line, I give you the ‘Tek Tank’ that will represent my Manticore by calling in grot suicide airstrikes. Though I’m still debating on what to call it so feel free to suggest another more suitable name for it?
But it is currently incomplete due to the fact it’s missing it’s crew that I’m painting up at the moment. The Head Techgrot ‘Gazza Stripbolt’ (from the comic) will be working the console on the top of the tank with his assistant ‘stubbs’ behind him.
Cause a Manticore only has 4 shots I’ll have 4 tek boyz working around the tank one will be on the lower console and another will be helping himself to the tools, after each shot is taken I’ll remove a tek boy.
So it’s temporary back to painting grots as I’m now painting up the Tek Tank’s crew and the Squig Tank pilots.

So you're saying that even the grots in the grot rebellion still don't care about their comrades, so much that they use them to pilot missiles? I LOVE IT!!
Great idea on the "ammo tracker" for the manticore, that should makes things easy to manage and also be efficient for playing games.
I'm not sure where to start with what I really like in this army. The theme is fantastic and isn't one I've seen much before (and I've seen greenstealaz, so I thought I'd seen everything! ). The execution is fantastic, great painting and modeling. The tanks are very nice, they look like they'd fit right in with any other IG army! (I have a feeling you meant to do this in accordance with your comics and fluff).
I think what really sticks in my head are the comics. Everything else is just brilliant, and the comics really tie it all together. They tell the story in well-done snippets; you only need to read a couple and you know everything that's going on! I can't heap enough praise on this army, I'm really excited to see more. Two up to you sir!

Big Gun & Squig Tanks Preview[u]
I've been workin on these tanks for a while the one of the left will represent artillery tanks like the griffon mortar and medusa as well as the hydras, switching the main gun for the appropriate weapon such as the mortar weapon shown.
Another recent idea I had for sentinels is SQUIG TANKS after seeing a killa kan conversion and how it reminded me of a squig, I was going to use the little tanks but these would represent sentinels a lot better. I'm even thinking of wiring a squig into the hatch so the grots would have made a squig dread, but I'm probably going to with a grot pilot. I was hoping to fit a squig on the base but there just isn't enough room to place one. So I'll create some squigs on seperate bases to run alongside them, they won't do anything gamewise but they'll add character.
With luck both tanks will be ready in a week and hopefully by then my doom-vee parts will have arrived if not I start work on my Thundersquig gunship.

Ok, I was hesitant at first, but that tank looks positively groty! Are you going to add details to the belly of the beast?

Grot Ninja No.3
Well thats the 3rd and final grot ninja completed just 1 more to go and that will be all my objectives completed.
As I mentioned before these guys are the rebellion scouts they find the enemy and call in the main force. I enjoyed doing a base with a some life compared to my usual dry deserts and ruins.
Whether the grot ninjas return in the future to fight for the rebellion (with the exception of grothopper representing marbo) will depend on if any good assassin units are featured in the rumored codex Inquisition.

The Squig Tank
Behold the Squig Tank! As you can see it represents a sentinel prefectly and features a jetback so that it can leap like a squig (a suggestion by my local GW store manager).
I plan to make 3 in total so I can tweak my army list, one of which will be launching itself into the air, the other will have horns.
Someone commented on how they look like tie-fighters and suggested I make a squadron of 3 and use it as a vendetta lol. But that should a little too crazy even for me.
Da Air Strika & Krew
Along with the squig tank I also completed all of the Air Strika's crew, quite a lot going on around this tank.
Because the Manticore only has 4 shots rather than keeping a dice or token besides it I'll remove one of the crew. After the last shot Gazza himself will be removed; taking shelter within the tank after his job is done.
Da Ead Mek: Gazza Stripbolt
Another hero of the rebellion is miniaturized originally he was going to be just a night goblin with a few tweaks controlling the Air Strika Tank. However my friend Matthew Green saw Gazza from the comic and requested that I let him make him, and he did a fantastic job!
So much so I made Gazza removable from his controls on the air strika tank so I can have him replace Colonel Grotsnik and have him lead the army with his assistant 'stubbs' (the one with the wretch) replacing the ammo runt.
Not sure what coming next since I'm still waiting for parts to arrive, perhaps the gunship? Automatically Appended Next Post: Heres the third page of the comic. All 3 characters are being made into miniatures and you may notice the which one has been made from my previous post.

Gorkil Nightrunna
Given how the other comic characters looked thanks to help from my friends Matthew and Alex, plus how the other ninjas had come out. I thought it was a good idea to go back and completely redo the assassin grot Grothopper
He now has a much better name and cooler weapons such as the remote 'boomer bugger' which counts as a demo charge.
"Gorkil iz da best grot in da rebellion next to da colonel, da boss gives im a mission and i'll do it without fail.
He's always getting new gear like iz remote 'boomer buggy' and 'Rippa Pistol' though he does love iz 'slicer'.

The difference was that they were a lot more intelligent than GW's goblins and grots. More like the goblins in WoW but less comical and more grimdark. Basically they've been slaves for years and years and now they're p***ed off!

"Buldin A Doom-Vee Boss!"
Well all the bits for the doom-vee finally arrived on friday so I slapped one together with blue- tac for a preview.
First I'll say is the thing's a monster it's 4 inches wide, so I look forward to scaring my opponent by driving 5 of them across the board.
I had originally wanted to have windows that had raised borders, plus a small boarder for the wheels as well. (See da attached planz)
However the smaller parts are too rough around the edges and you need to cut at it with a knife to smooth it down, but that makes it even smaller. So I've decided to add just bolts to the wheel around the shield.
The windows however were a bit more of a challenge I had thought to use mesh but there is no space above the window due to the leman russ hull to glue it down. But after an hour of rummaging though my bits box I found a solution.
After buying two ‘Aegis Defence Line’ sets for the dakka tank’s autocannon turret I had a lot of barricades so I cut the window out and slapped it behind the hull. It was a damn near perfect fit.
One question I will ask is how should I detail the shields on the wheels paint the star or a skull? Because that skull is far too detailed for a grot tank.
Also for those who were with me at the start of the log and suggested names for the doom-vees to be labeled on the front plates, here are the winners...

To Ya Tankz Boyz
Well I've finally completed all the tek boyz workin the Air-Strika. Since it represents a manticore which has only 4 shots I plan to use them as tokens; removing each one after firing each shot.
Heres a more detailed pic of them. Now and then I replace Grotsnik with Stripbolt and have him lead the army with his assistant 'stubbs' (the one with the wretch) who will replace the ammo runt.
Looking at the grot with the drill I feel my blending skills have improved greatly since starting this project. So I plan to go back and add a few more highlights to all the grot troopers.
Also... THE DOK IS IN!
His hand is glued to the turret so that I can still rotate it round.

I already have back in the olde rebellion. Back then they were little monsters operating in 3 5 man squads deep striking and blowing away anything with their 3 assault weapons before fighting to survive the counter attacks. But that tactic was binned when kill pts came out.
Now they serve as my sergeants as the red troopers now count as veterans.

Grot Militia
When I first started remaking this army infantry platoons were not on my to do list as I thought vets were the way forward, that was till I got beaten by a guard army with 2 vet squads supported by 4 infantry platoons and realised their excellent for support. So I decided to make a grot infantry platoon aka the Grot Militia.
The idea is that these grots are still going through the change after taking the supa juice so they’re not as big or as dark as the grot troopers, plus their still currently be trained and have yet to earn the right to be part of a tank crew.
The leader of the grot militia is Grotsnik’s 2nd in command ‘Kaptin Squigscream’ who will be done later on in the project.
As you can see the grot militia model is very small so I decided to place it on a raised base to avoid being unable to shoot due to a small wall, besides they’ll be in cover most of the time anyway.

The airstrika came out 100% perfect, I really like the counters as well, they'll make for thematic and effective gaming pieces.
Did you decide to name the Doomvee "Rebellious Prime?" I think it's quite a good name, and I wanted to know if the name had been nailed down.
The newest comic is as great as all of the others, and now I'm really excited to see all of these character in the army! (the ones you've finished so far are amazing, I can't wait to see the last few)
Keep up the work on this insanely original army, I'll be watching!

I did consider it but in the end I decided to go with 'Da Red Star' as it sounded better for the HQ's Doom-vee.
UNLEASH THE DAKKA!
At last I’ve finally completed the Dakka Tank; representing a Hydra flak tank for those of you who can’t realise that due to the weapons.
First thing I’ll say is that turret is a right pain to paint and getting rid of the mould lines ain’t easy neither, so I ain’t looking to the creating the 2nd one.
“We got a problem ere, all are enemies av lotz of transports for dere boyz, plus
deres da big critters dat rip though are tanks like deyz nuffing, so we created
the ‘Dakka Tank’ to unleash lotz of powerful dakka on da enemy;
So look out boyz we’z gonna unleash the DAKKA!”
As for the tank I’m very pleased with it, especially the smaller details such as the ladder for the gunner and oil spill which I used to cover a slip up I made during painting. I added some resin bolts to the leman russ turret to give it a more sturdy look and replaced the original bridge for the two sides of the turret with an ork biker bit that has a small motor in the middle, perfect for powering the gun feeders.
Some people have expressed concern for the size of the model since I maybe taking the grots to the UK Throne Of Skulls tournament later this year. The tank is the same width as a rhino and with the turret is just a bit higher than a predator, so this shouldn’t matter especially as they’ll operate in a squadron so they’ll be easy to spot.
You’ll see more of this tank later on in the project as I’m planning to have alternative turrets for a Griffon Mortar and Medusa variant.
I’m now gonna start work on a much simpler model, the grot signature vehicle; The Doom-Vee, I’m working on two different types of mud caps for the wheels which I’ll upload tomorrow so I can get feedback on which one looks better.

i love that tank, it is a bit small but i think that modeling-wise the size looks awesome! it really matches the other tanks in the army and feels very grot like. i think it is a really welldone model. the weapons are a bit large but again i think this works well with the feel of the army.
are you going to convert up every model in the IG army list, i feel that you could easily do it seeing how much you've gotten to this far.
out of curiosity, how long does it take you to paint a single grot soldier, or a single tank?
if you ever make it to NYC would love to play a game with you! this is one of the few armies i feel which is a honor to face on the tabletop!

When I first threw together assembled it in a GW store someone commented on how it looked like something out of Thunderbirds. I must say if it weren't for the fact grots built this tank I would have taken it as an insult.
Yes I will being converting every model, even if it's only a little bit.
Squads and tanks take usually a whole week of evenings to paint plus any other time I can put towards them.
Doom-Vee Wheel Cap Designs
I slapped together some wheel cap designs for the doom-vee today...
The one on the back wheel has a basic appearance with holes drilled around the center point. For the 2nd one I went for a more armoured look using some larger resin bolts from the same range as the ones I used for the dakka tank.
I used the side plate from the old doom-vee so I could see how it looks with the red hull. It's goes without saying which one looks better and will be the one I use.
Sadly a problem has come up that will slow down my Doom-Vee production. I've only just realised that the front port window & back storage frame for the leman russ doesn't come on the upgrade sprues I've brought!
I've tried other alternatives such as a glass and mesh window but it looks like I'm going to have to wait until I can get a hold of that certain bit from bitz websites. So far I have found one and have ripped 2 off my old doom-vee and leman russ. So hopefully you'll see the first doom-vee by next week.
'So how big are the rebel grots?'
I've been asked quite a lot how big the grot troopers are due to the guardsmen body. So I thought I'd upload this little line up for those who want to know.
I've also decided to rename the grot militia. Now they are know as Groundpounders! It's more of a greenskin name for mobile infantry.

DA DOOM-VEE IS ON DA WAY!
Normally I wait till a model is painted before I upload a photo of it; but since I was so pleased with how this tank looks I thought I’d upload a photo of it unpainted. Plus I’m busy all next week so I won’t be able to get it painted up anytime soon sadly.
It’s pleasing to know that the army is going to feature five of these menacing looking vehicles. Armed with the ‘Afta Burna’ I mean heavy flamer under the driver’s window and a multi-laser turret to help my opponent recognize it as a chimera transport by using an actual chimera turret. In size they're just wider than a standard chimera by 5mm.
It features 5 fire points for the grots inside to shoot out of. I’ve also included a small look-out post on the top of the vehicle that will feature a different grot for each doom-vee.
As with all my conversion changes were made during the built. I chose to magnetise the ram so it be easier to transport. Plus I attached a step at the back due to the hull being too high of the ground for a grot to step in. I also added some detail to the blank front plate by adding some bolts and a searchlight.
Now all I need to do is trim the resin lines off the wheels so they won’t be highlighted when I dry-brush the sand and dust onto them. Someone suggested I use a mud mixture on them and although that’s tempting I would have to go back and do the same to the completed vehicles.
What’s your thoughts on the matter; should I add some mud detail or keep with my basic desert dust?

I very pleased on how it came out especially the turret, I used an old white dwarf tutorial for the battle damage to make it looked used. Later this week I'll be adding a grot dok to go on the top of the tank behind the turret observing his nasty poisons at work.

WHEEL TROUBLES!
During the weekend I attempted to trim the mould lines off the Doom-Vee wheels but I found out that’s far from simple. Due to the arched shapes of the details it hard to get a clear cut on the lines. Using a knife is hard because of the rubber; if I’m too light it doesn’t do anything and if I press to hard I cut the wheel.
Notice the mould line going down the centre of the wheel…
It’s frustrating that I can’t get rid of all the mould line because it will be easily highlighted when I do the dust effects with drybrushing.
I do love the look of those wheels especially with the armoured caps. I’m still experimenting with the 6 spare wheels I have but if I can’t clear the mould lines I’ll have to find another type of wheel to use.
Any suggestions guys?

Any thoughts toward some gunners in the side windows? Just a barrel or two sticking out. Rivets, of course... or a side hatch below the windows, maybe. A satellite, ooo- or a grot lounging on the side... in a hammock! ... as for the mold lines, I've had good luck with a pair of flat sided clippers or a freshly sharpened, delicate exacto knife. Try using needle nose pliers to give it tension and slowly slice along the surface. If you put a dent in the tire, cover it with some plasticard, aka metal plating... right?

I've used a metal file on rubber mold lines before. As long as your careful the mould line will disappear. If your too rough then it may puncture but I've never had a problem.

Could work, however due to the flexabilty of the rubber it might not stay on?
Gathering Storm wrote:If your too rough then it may puncture but I've never had a problem.
True, however I believe this problem is due to the fact I've chosen a very complex design on my wheel and as a result the mould lines are very deep, plus the
Studs and raised areas get in the way.
Here’s a photo of the dry-brushed wheels, now they look fantastic from a distance but as soon as you look closely the mould lines are easily noticeable despite my attempts to remove them.
I also dry-brushed one of the old doom-vee wheels so that I could see if the vanish spray would leave a shiny coat on the rubber. When comparing the two I think I maybe better off with a simpler wheel design in the long run both for getting rid of the mould lines and dry-brushing?
What do you think? I might try using some heated up wire to remove the mould lines but if that doesn’t work I’m going to have to use a simpler wheel design.

The hot wire should do the trick, if your careful... but a patched tire wouldn't be unheard of in this army... right? Or are they suppose to be more professional than that? It does look like a pretty up scale operation for grots... or area the Mechanicus guys helping them behind the scenes still?

If the hot wire doesn't work (and your modelling knife has a rubber grip), heat your knife in a candle and use that to scrape away the mould line. Works a treat for me.

Well my attempts to remove the mould lines have failed. Heating up the knife with a lighter didn't seem to make any difference. Plus although the chain idea is good I don’t think it would look right.
So it looks like I need to get some different wheels, I did come across some wheels in a pound store that seemed ideal (their pattern is displayed in the corner of my last pic and their resin line is well hidden). However it’s in another city so I need to make a trip to get them.

“Diz Tank Make A Much Bigger Boom”
3 things to go through in this post first is the new tank fresh off the lines; which is the ‘Battle Bruzer!’
Back when I originally made the grots the Leman Russ was the most difficult tank to come up with a good conversion for. I want to convert everything so I tried to do a half track using a pair of shortened chimera tracks and a large pair of wheels and it failed.
The tracks turned out to be too long so I had no where to fit the wheels on, however they were just the right length to replace the leman russ tracks themselves.
In the end it worked out a lot better as it gave the tank a better feeling of bulk and I much prefer the shape of these tracks to the original.
At the moment I’ve just built the basic setup I’ll come back to do all the different turrets and sponsons at a later date. The sponsons will be the same as before; mounted on the track guards like turrets like the old one below (notice the holes in the new one).
“Get Da Dakka Tank To Pull Diz Bitz”
I took the Dakka Tank to my gaming club last week and while they loved it they couldn’t help but be concerned with its size.
True it’s only a few mm shorter and slimmer than a Basilisk, but it is still half the size in length. Someone then made an ingenious suggestion to add a little trailer to it therefore increasing it to the correct length.
So I went back home that evening and created a trailer using my old ‘Little Bugger’ tank that was no longer needed due to the Squig tanks representing the sentinels now. (see attachment)
I’ll probably insert something into the hole at the front to add height to it as well such as banner or something.
“Diz iz when we go to WAR”
The Grots will be entering several tournaments this year, the first of which will be the Yorkshire doubles tournament on the 24th of next month.
It’s 900pts per player so I need to get 3 Doom-Vees, 1 Hydra and 2 Squig Tanks done for it, which is why I’ve saved the Battle Bruzer’s weapons for later.
My partner is a Blood Axe player from my gaming club who’s army has a military appearance with blue camo and looted chimeras (it was the only army that would look right next to the grots.
His boss is Grotsnik’s Rival and Best Enemy who will appear later in the comic. So for this one time they’ll be teaming up with his 3 Battlewagons, meganobs and Mek and my 3 doom-vees and troopers to kill sum humies!
But the real funs begins at these tournaments where I’ll field the whole might of the rebellion…

20th Nov – GW UK Throne Of Skulls

REV UP DA DOOM-VEE BOYZ!
Well here it is a long last, the grot rebellion’s signature vehicle; DA DOOM-VEE!
“One of da best tankz we built waz da Doom-Vee, in it grots could shoot
orks and beakies up close without fear of gettin stomped. It az menee tools
for killin such as da ram and aftar burna plus it’s killy lazer turret.
So look out Orkz cauz ere comes da Doom-Vees!”
I was concerned with the wheels both because of how they looked when drybrushed and the mould lines; even though real wheels would have mould lines this is a hobby where mould lines are seen as a bad thing so it was frustrating not being able to remove them.
But seeing it now they’re not as bad as I thought, what do you think?
Since this was the first vehicle I went with No.4 as it won’t be used in half my army lists and therefore any mistakes in it’s construction would be corrected in the other 4 doom-vees including Grotsnik’s.
With that in mind I when with some basic fuel tanks and an ammo crate. All Doom-Vees will have a different set of cargo and a look-out grot all of which would have to be very well done because while the grot troops are in the vehicles these grots would be on the board and visible all the time (or until the tank gets blown up).
This Doom-Vee will have a grot armed with a looted plasma pistol riding in the look-out to represent the plasma armed vets inside. But since he’s still being worked on and I wanted to upload the doom-vee today I decided to use this one instead, as you can see the ride has been a bit too rough for him.
Well what do you think to the Grot Signature transport?
Also sadly because my friend can’t afford to go with his blood axes it doesn’t look like I’ll be going to the Yorkshire Doubles tournament with the Grots. However this is sort of a good thing as it means I can take my time to complete the grots especially since I’ll be going to the Throne Of Skulls tournament in November, I got my ticket yesterday, and I’m after that trophy with the paint brush.

As for the wheels, considering that pics normally show those mould lines up more than rl I'd say they're good to go (then agin, I'm not after a trophy ). Are you going to be using the same wheels on the others, or another design?

Raising The Bar!
Now that the Grots are going to the Throne Of Skulls tournament I’ve become even more picky about my models. As a result I find myself spending even more time working on a single tank or model and even just a much time looking at it.
It’s constantly frustrating to know that while I can create fantastic conversions that are full of character I’m still held back by my painting skill.
We saw at the start of the log how one of the grots can look when done by a skilled painter and how my level of painting paled against it.
While I’m pleased with the tanks there are still many models that I’m unhappy with now, such as the veterans who skin still needs improving so I’m going to go back later and redo it.
One of my mates even suggested that I enter the Golden Daemon Open Category with the grots. Though none of the models would stand a chance of winning he thinks that if I create a fancy display board and enter the entire army I could win or at least be noticed by White Dwarf. Personally I think he aiming a little too high?
Anyway look at what I found and dusted off; the first grot rebellion pics back when they were just an idea I had come up with during my first year at unit. Man my modelling was appalling back then.
and the painted versions again poor work. Back then Colonel Grotsnik was Commiezar Gobstyk named after my gaming club but due to legal reasons I had to change it.

You shouldn't get down on yourself for your painting skills. They are not that bad! Maybe try a smaller (or larger) brush or a new painting technique if you feel stagnant.
The Rebellion has come a long way, don't aim too low or you're likely to hit another grot!

"Da Bitz Wagon Iz All Hooked Up Boss"
As I mentioned in a previous post; while the Dakka Tank is technically the right height and width it is still too short in length.
But then someone at my club made an ingenious suggestion to add a little trailer to it therefore increasing it to the correct length.
And here it is...
I'm very pleased with it as it's made the tank even more unique looking.
As you can see I've added some extra bits and details to represent it being a storage wagon, I've also added a flag for purposes of it being fair for 'true line of sight'.

"Watz Dat Komin Over Da Ill?"
The 2nd and 3rd Squig tanks have been completed and unlike the first one they weren't rushed, slapping the basecoat on ruined the first Squig tank..
As you can see I've done a lot more with the bases this time and I intend to add a small Squig running alongside 'horny'. Along with the more detailed bases I've also added some extra bits to the Squig tanks themselves.
The white painted jaws on the first one didn't feel right, this was a tank for scouting even the grots ain't that dumb! Besides the horns and metal mohawk look a lot better, if I get the time I'll remake the first one and have the teeth as metal plates that have been bolted on.
There are also little details such as the front lights under the main body and the kill score on the left beneath the gun plus the driver of the jumping Squig tank’s eye patch. I felt it was necessary to have at least one jumping to show they had more in common with the Squig than appearance. I did consider having the jumpback firing but it’s rare for such modeled effects to look good.
Now all that’s left to do build before the doubles tournament is the 2 doom-vees one of which will be the command vehicle. Plus Kaptin Squigscream!

Da Boyz Need An Outpost Dey Do?
I've ran into a bit of trouble, I found myself in need of another chimera. However I've only got enough doom-vee parts left to make another 4 and to be honest I'm not up for scavenging more of those wheels and side panels for a 6th vehicle that will be only used in 1750 games.
But I've had an idea; this chimera is designed to be more of a bunker as it will contain a vet squad with a missile and 3 grenade launchers and camp on an objective at the back of the field while providing support.
So the answer is simple create a mobile outpost for the grots. All the other big tanks are designed to be vehicle first and base second (such as barracks, medical centre and tech lab). Now I find myself wanting to design a tank that is base first and vehicle second something that the grots would send out and deploy as an outpost.
(something like this but not so big)
So far I’ve come up with one idea which is to build a small bunker on the top of a chimera above the hatch behind the turret and use the leftover leman russ sponsons to create add-on bunkers that can be placed on the side of the vehicle. Add a few searchlights, a comm array and a flag and you’ve got yourself a grot base.
Should the tank need to move it’s only natural that a grot would leap for the driver’s seat and floor it leaving the attachments behind.
Either way it should be a fun and interesting tank to build, s o what do you think to idea, is it creative or just a little too crazy?

What about something like this but with normal guard tracks with extra armour on the sides using plasticard to copy the FW designs and adding a lookout deck on the top at the back?
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Looks good. Adding the searchlights/comms to the lookout deck should be ace. If the sponsoons are attached to the sides (magnets?) perhaps double-width tracks may indicate theres a bit more room inside as befits a more 'basey' type vehicle. Or that may just be me as I always like double tracks

So, you're thinking something similar to the SoB rhino conversion that FW sells, the Repressor, but built off a chimera chassis instead of rhino?
You could honestly just make it a rickety old chimera with sandbags stacked around the hatch with a sheet metal roof over the top (keep them pesky grenades out).

Post by: Proiteus
I've been thinking today that I might be going a little bit too far with this conversion idea. It's one of my golden conversion rules to never make things complicated and confusing for my opponent, and having 2 tanks that look different but represent the same vehcile seems to be just that, even if I'm using the chimera turret on both of them.
If it weren't for the fact this tank is being built for use in a 1750pt tournament at Warhammer World I'd do it, but with it being competitive I'm having my doubts about creating it? What do you think?
29739
Post by: Archmagos_Amadeus
That's one way of looking at it, and convenience is an important aspect for an opponent, however, given your skill at conversion and the way you've already made the existing Doom-Vee's fit in with the IG look I don't think it should be an issue. Also, if your opponent was able to follow the "counts-as" of your Machine Cult army, this shouldn't bee too much of an issue.
I for one would love to see you make this conversion if for no other reason than it will make an awesome centerpiece for this army.

Post by: monkeytroll
Well, I'm not really a player these days, and i've never done the tourney thing, but I get your concerns, and agree you probably don't want it too different from the others in this case. That's a shame and hopefully some of the tournament players will chip in and say it's not an issue as I would like to see where you take this. If you decide it's a no-go how about a doom-vee but with tracks instead of wheels, not too different and the addition of comms and searchlight still feasible. The same basic vehicle design, just a differing propulsion unit, that should be acceptable, after all it works for trukks and warbikes

Mobile Base Scrapped
Sadly like the Airship I've had to scrap it, mainly for two reasons:
First was my concern about confusing my opponent so I asked my fellow conversion fanatic and greenskin rival for his opinion at my local club, he said I should stick to the Doom-Vees as they're brilliant conversions and having 7 on the board would look awesome.
Second and most influential of all was that I discovered that the current Leman Russ window plates are bigger than the old ones last night when I was building 2 more Doom-vees. The window is bigger and the plate is 3mm longer than the old one that I used for the first Doom-Vee. This means that one Doom-Vee will look different to the other 4.
So I’ve decided after the doubles tournament to alter the first Doom-Vee for long range combat; this means changing the flamer for a heavy bolter, replacing the crates with a missile silo and having a grot sniper in the look out point. I’ll also try and find one of the old curved dozer blades to go on the front instead of the ram. This way the smaller window won’t be an issue and the five Doom-Vees at the front which I use more often will all look the same.

Upcoming Stuff
Here some stuff that I'm working on at the moment while working on the Doom-vees...
First is the Dakka Tank variant turret 'The Mega-Lobba' which I will use to represent a Griffon Mortar, built using an ork big gun base, steam tank cannon, sentinel searchlight (for the cannon hatch) and a few other bits. The grot was going to go on a doom-vee but he suits this tank a lot better.
The second is a special objective marker which is not yet complete but will serve and important role in the army; any guesses?

"NO MORE WHEEL TROUBLE BOSS, WE'Z GONNA MAKE DEM ARD!"
AT LAST AN END TO THE MOULD LINE PROBLEM! A friend offered to remove the mould lines off the tires for me, but even he was driven crazy due to their rubber texture. So we began discussing alternatives this evening at my gaming club and we eventually came up with a solution!
Since the rubber tires were going to be so much trouble, we thought it might be a better idea to remove them and add plasticard plates to the wheel instead. This idea was inspired by my greenskin rival's scratch built battlewagon wheels. So basically all of the Doom-Vee's we have wheels like the ones on the old ork battlewagons and painted a dark shade of metal. (shown below)
This solves so many problems; drybrushing will be easier on a flat surface, no need to glue the tires into place plus they make the vehicles look even more hard and orky, I mean groty
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
That'll sort it then
Are you adding the plasticard to the existing rubber tyres, or building new wheels from scratch?

monkeytroll wrote:That'll sort it then

No need just the rubber tires themselves, I'll then add the plasicard tiles to the wheel itself; you can see the plastic wheel part more clearly in the pic. If I use thick plasicard I only lose 1 or 2mm in width.

Dez Wheelz R Dead Ard
Well the grot rebellion is still going guys and they’ve had their first piece of action today.
But first as you all know I’ve been having some troubles with the rubber wheels I originally brought for the doom-vees; such as removing the mould lines and dry brushing the dust on them. I eventually came up with a alternative solution which was to replace the rubber wheels with armoured plates, just like the old Ork battlewagons.
Well it took all Sunday afternoon & evening to create all 36 panels and I only just managed to complete the 2 doom-vees at 3 this morning ready for the doubles tournament today.
Here they are modelled on the Command Doom-vee; extra pts for the personal who can tell me what the Ork glyph means?
While they may take longer to build and I’d have to build another 180 ‘shudder’ they do look a lot smoother when drybrushed compared to the rubber wheels were the drybrushing is all over the place due to the shape and texture.
“So what do you think to the new Ard Wheels; are they an improvement or do you prefer the rubber wheels?”
Da Test Drive!
Well I finally got to take the new grots out for a spin today at the Yorkshire Doubles Tournament and apart from forgetting that the Hydra autocannons were twin linked for the first game and a half it went okay.
The first two games were fantastic and very close, we would have won the first one if we hadn’t ran out of time. The third game just had me and my ork ally in a race to see who could kill the most Necrons, it was over by turn 4 and not very interesting. Overall the two units that shined was Gorkil (Marbo) who got stuck into a unit of Long Fangs for an entire game and The GBH (Banewolf) which torn it’s way through the most enemy units in all 3 games.
End result was a Draw, Minor Loss & Massacre Victory and athough we didn’t win best army my comic won me an award for best background.
I would love to go into more detail but I’m absolutely knacked, as always I look forward to your feedback.

...I personaly think that the 'Ard Wheels are best only on the Command Doom Vee and that you should keep the rubber wheels on the other Doom Vee's.

I'd keep both sets of wheels The 'ard wheelz are great - try a different tread pattern on the next set - maybe as per 'ard wheelz but with a central band, or alternate the side the plates are on (like the Ork Trukk wheels), or even slightly V shaped plates. You could even use Ork glyphs as plates. I like my Ork vehicles unique! (Hence I love your grotz - modelling/painting wise - though my Orks may have to (attempt) to put them in their place - should they ever meet )

I put them on the one with the small window, you can see the difference in the left window size in the lower pic which I mentioned before. That way I could either use it as the kommand Doom-vee if I decided to go with the plated wheels, and if not I could use them for the mobile base 'Da Kamper' which will feature a dozer blade and rarely move during games.

Yeah, those new wheels, frankly Im unsure.
The idea is grand but the materials may be the betrayer here.
Thinner plates might work better, or maybe running spokes off the plates to give the tire a more armored feel.
Now if all the doomvees had that plate style as it is now, I think it wouldnt be an issue.

“Beold Ma Latiz Kreation!”
I give you ‘Da Mega Lobba!’ When I created the Dakka tank I did mention that they’d be some variants and this is the first one representing a Griffon Mortar.
Originally the Griffon was going to be represented by a simple barrel sticking out of the top that was shown in the first preview, however a Griffon is open topped so I created a new turret using some bits I had in my boxes and an empire steam tank cannon.
Though this tank won’t be making appearances in my full 1500pt armies it will be used for small games in my 600pts ‘Doom Patrol’ list which I use for playing games in GW stores, lets face it using a full mech guard army on a 48X48 board does give you much maneuverability.
Wat ya tink?
I’m considering painting the Command Squad’s Doom-vee black with bronze details, however I have doubts on how good a black tank can look given how I can only highlight, what do you think? Also anyone know any good tutorials for painting black tanks?
On a lesser note should I rename my grot assassin ‘Spookums?’

NOW; Does anyone know what I can add to my command doom-vee to make it stand out, cause painting it black isn't an option anymore?

The germans used to fly flags on the command vehicles of their tank colums in large armor engagements like in Africa or Kursk. Perhaps a command standard or small flag flying from the turret?

Since you clearly have the skill, what about graffiti or a mural, depicting the grot's history and/or victories? Failing that, write 'da bosses ride' all over it

A dead ork chained to the front of the vehicle. That make it stand out as the Command Vee.
The graffiti as CK suggested would be pretty cool.

DATZ OLD SKOOL!
When I was visiting my family last week I popped by my old independent stockist, the guy also sells 2nd hand miniatures and I found 2 of these babies.
For those of you who don’t recognise it’s a Grot Cutta one of the vehicles that the official grot rebellion used in the game Gorkamorka. The 2nd one doesn’t have the mast but for £2 each it was a steal!
At the moment I’m considering rebuilding this one and slapping it up on ebay. True it would look cool in the army but there is nothing for it to represent and it’s too big for an objective?

Congrats on the brilliant find Protieus.
Try and incorporate the second (mastless) cutta onto some terrain or an Apocalypse objective marker.

Brilliant find indeed; couldn't you turn one into a rough rider champion or something? It would be a shame to ditch these on ebay when they're such an iconic part of the grot rebellion history - then again, if you decide to do so, drop me a PM!

You can maybe get a cast of it or sell it to someone you know who know how to cast. It would be for the greater good that the model lives. (I guess it's oop)

you could just stick it on a prominent shelf and wait till its worth a stack. Its really nicely painted and a rare item so it'll appreciate! Automatically Appended Next Post:
although I agree with R-Mountainz if its not for profit... (they could be watching)

Cut one in half and "bury" each half in some ruble for a sweet objective (holy relic?) of terrain. Or you could use them for some rough riders, with plenty of bits and your talent. If you wanted to run rough riders, that it.
Very cool find, at any rate. If you sell it, I hope all the proceeds go to the rebellion, and I hope its a big proceed
