You've got a sort of midtone red on your normal vehicles. If you can't do black, maybe do a really deep red? Easier to highlight at least, will tie in and should hopefully stick out enough.

WOW! It never seizes to amaze me how much people love the grot rebellion especially the huge following here on DakkaDakka. The army is even being posted on small websites and blog because people are that impressed with it.
And it’s this support that driving me to get them complete for their tournament appearance, first at a local tournament then the GCN tournament and finally the GW Throne Of Skulls where I hope to take home the best army prize.
Right now I’m working on the 5th Squad Of Grot Troopers armed with sniper rifles and a Rokkit wagon that will be uploaded later in the week.
But for now here some early concepts for the grot rebellion which I drew up in boring uni lectures back in 2006...

Your cult following has increased ten-fold since you restarted the Grots. I've been a loyal follower for as long as I've had a Dakka account (well, longer actually). Ever thought of fashioning yourself into some kind of a Demagogue or Cult Leader?
However, my computer can't find the deviant art images (which is a shame ).

Ma Latest Invention!
Originally the rebellion used the over the shoulder guard missile launchers and lets face it that’s a lot of weight for a grot plus the risks of having a grot trying to shoot through a thin firing window on a doom-vee. So instead I made an oversized laser pointer which operates a mobile Rokkit silo out of a leftover epic battlewagon, his doom-vee will also have one added to the hull which you’ll see at a later date.
“Ey Guyz Gazza Stripbolt ere, now wen Grotsnik started iz rebellion da boyz
carried da Rokkit launcherz on da shoulderz. Now diz led to a lot a trooperz
urting demselves and not hitting anyting so I made diz; Da Rokkit wagon, it
easy da grot trooper uses dat dere lazer pointin ting to pick a targit and den
launchz a Rokkit that goes into da air and lands on da targit with a boom!”
Hopefully you’ll see the rest of his squad later in the week.

All Da Boyz R Ready Boss!
The 5th and final grot trooper squad is completed, these guys are equipped to provide support fire while camping out in their modified doom-vee on an objective in my deployment zone.
I was scratching my head on how to convert plastic sniper rifles but then a mate gave a full box of space marine scouts after trying to get back into the hobby, problem solved thou the capes had to be trimmed.
It clear that I need to get a new camera as it can photograph tanks but has trouble with squads.
Anyway time to start work on the 2nd Dakka Tank and redo The Little Grot which is my back up plan in case I'm unable to complete the complex valkyrie conversion in time.

Not really, as long as there are 9 other squad members then it doesn't matter if theres a small base. I regularly have guardsmen with missiles on a small base, it just means you put the loader (or an extra lasgun/ grot equivilant) on a seperate base.

DA FINAL KOUNTDOWN TO DA REVALOUTION!!!
Well here I am 30 days to go before the CGN Open War tournament; the place were the original grot rebellion won best army, making up for it below-average modelling with lots of character. But before that I've got my local tournament to attend to were the full grot rebellion will take to the field for the first time with all 14 tanks!
Because of the number of tanks (plus optional units I hope to build in future) I've had to spend a large amount of cash on a big battlefoam army case to fit all of it in, which I hope will arrive before the tournament or else I'm going to have to go out a buy a lot of bubble wrap.
Still got 3 Chimeras and a vendetta to build plus I'm still making final adjustments to the 2nd dakka tank so I've got to really get my head down. I've recently built 'The Little Grot 2' tank as a back up plan in case I fail to complete the vendetta on time. I haven't uploaded it yet because the turret needs stripping so it's yet to be fully completed.
With luck I'll have Kaptin Squigscream and a few more Doom-vees to show you by the end of the week.

There have been two official Dakka T's this year. Canterbury and Nottingham. But this is something new...
With our love.. hopefully these god like organisers will sort out repeat yearly events. (my wish +1)
ArbitorIan has realised there are more touRnaments happening in the UK than we first realised.
He built this thread -> http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/299954.page
He and I discussed briefly which ones we'd do this year/next.
I'm also planning a more outgoing approach to the next year...

"Anuder Dakka tank rollz out of da mek's workshop!"
At last something to show you guys. I added an ammo runt to this one delivering some more ammunition to the boyz inside, plus I made the gunner appear to be having a fun time cause let’s face who wouldn’t behind that sort of weapon.
Like before I added a trailer to increase the tank’s length, I originally had a old storm boy rocket in a stand on the back but it didn’t look right so I ripped it off at the last minute and replaced it with the small winch which looks a lot better.
The 1st Dakka Tank

DA ARMY LOOKZ DEAD KILLY KOLONEL!
I’ve had a several requests for a shot of the whole army, sadly my camera is limited so I can only just scrap by with a photo of a small group like this one > Doom Patrol
Anyway here’s the best I can manage...
With the army case yet to turn up my army is currently sitting on some shelves each of which are 24 wide so you can already guess how much space my army will take up in deployment (not looking forward to corner deploy thou). You can also see the incomplete Hellhound tank 2nd from the left.
So all that’s left to build is the 3 Doom-vees , 5 creators for when my doom-vees get destroyed to give cover to the defenceless grots (legal rule) and my Thundasquig Gunship.
BUT NOT AS KILLY AS DEM FLYING ARMIE OF DOOM!
Yesterday I saw what can be best described and my army’s natural predator which I dread I will have to fight at my local tournament, the army is damn near unstoppable able to completely destroy 3 units a turn. It consists of 9 Vendettas all with heavy bolters with a command squad with fleet officer and astropath and 3 vets with flamers. NASTY!

“BORN TA GRILL!”
Well I finally got round to stripping the skotcha turret and completing ‘The Little Grot II’...
'Doze boyz daz gotta eat zo we hav dey Little Grot cafz on da feild ta
filla'em up good, pluz during battle dey burn a few enemies too'
It originally started as a simple repaint but I eventually decided to rip it apart and build it again from scratch. As you can see from this photo it’s a vast improvement on the original...
Everyone I asked told me to use a strong paint stripper but I wasn’t keen on buying such a powerful product that required so much care to use and dispose of.
So I instead used a £2 bottle of Detox that did the job just as well as the more dangerous and expensive alternative. The only bad side is that it did smell a bit when it was finished but a quick soapy wash got rid of it. I recommend everyone visits this tutorial if they need any paint stripping > 'Stripping Models Using Cleaning Products'
Sadly it’s become clear that my ThundaSquig Gunship won’t be done in time for the 2 tournaments this month since I still need to get the craters and comic done , I could get it done but not without rushing it which I don’t want to do. Instead The Little Grot II will take its place and I’ll get it done in time for the Throne Of Skulls Tournament next month.
“DA LAST LINE OF DEFENCE?”
Upon looking at all the rules related to my mech guard I found a rule that allows me to replace an exploded doom-vee with a crater, this will protect my vulnerable grot troopers long enough for the vendetta to rescue them or at least have them survive a little longer.
Now I plan to make some planks out of plasticard to rest on the wheels when a doom-vee is destroyed so that most of the surviving squad can be placed on the top. But I’m unsure what to do for craters.
I had planned to use the GW craters but then I was reminded that my remaining vehicles would require dangerous tests to move through them and 3 of the GW craters are far too big. So I’m going to have to create my own the question is how big should I make them?
The first idea is to use old CDs to create a small crater using modelling putty with several bits of wreckage on. Alternatively I could use the GW 100mm textured movement trays and decorate them with pieces of doom-vee wreckage with space in the middle to put the few remaining grots so it looks like they’ve dived for cover among the few remaining pieces of their beloved doom-vee.
Which do you think sounds better?
Also with luck I'll have the 5th page of the comic uploaded tommorrow
23589

DIZ DA FINAL KOUNTDOWN!
Well here I am on the final straight to the grots first appearance, just need to finish off 3 sets of doom-vee wheels and the army’s ready for its first game against (the current) Dark Eldar this Thursday.
Of course as soon as that’s done I’ll focus on finishing the comic and constructing my doom-vee wreck templates on the textured fantasy trays which I hope will look similar to this one when finished: http://www.microartstudio.com/news_photos/5SJPFTYWRL5MAO6Q.jpg
I plan to visit my local modelling shop tomorrow to get some suitable parts for the wreckage, however with the limited time I have left I may have to use print out templates for the first tournament, which is annoying.
However a more serious problem has occurred! I finally got my Battlefoam P.A.C.K 720 on Friday but with none of the infantry trays I ordered from the uk retailer despite having them listed as in stock! I'm told I'll get them a later date but that ain't helpful so I’m going to have to use some GW trays and use the leftover foam blocks to secure them!
TO TELL WATZ WAT
When I first took the grot rebellion to a tournament many years ago there was no problem with my opponent being able to indentify each unit as each model looked suitable for the unit it represents.
The same applies to the newer versions with the exception of the Manticore. But with all the tournaments I plan to take the grots to in the next year I felt it necessary to make a reference sheet just in case my opponent trys to argue the idea that they're confusing.

"WE RIDE TA WOR!"
Well the grots had their first game yesterday against Dark Eldar and won, sadly it was more due to my opponent’s bad luck than skill but gave me a better understanding of each unit’s strengths and weaknesses plus what attracts the most of my opponents firepower.
Anyway just adding some finishing touches on to the Doom-Vees, so far the only one that is fully completed is the Doom-Vee for the Command Squad named ‘Da Red Star’
"Erez ma ride as you can see it's got a lota wayz for me
ta order my boyz and listen da wat dey say"
Well I’m off to my local tournament tomorrow and I’m hoping the grots do well; I’ll also upload a small report and pictures of another 3 doom-vees and then finish page 5 of the comic and upload that on Sunday.

AND WE IZ... ROLLIN!!!
Well the grots had their first tournament yesterday and performed better than I had imagined. Completely destroying the first two opponent's armies whilst losing only a few units.
Then in the last round I fought 9 Vendetta army and while I destroyed the majority of his army he crippled mine meaning he could turbo-boost into my deployment area and score while my grot had to leg it to his whilst being gunned downed by heavy-bolters.
Overall it was very good day and I finished 5th, now I'm even more excited about Open War next saturday.
Also here are the 2 Doom-vees; Da Squasha and Da Rokn'N Red...
DOOM-VEE FACT 1 - WOR-KAMS
"Now derez very few grotz dat can offer a gud descripchun of wat deyz seen so I use dez Wor-kams on my scoutin doom-veez so dat I kan see wat iz gonna be fightin!"
I thought it be a good idea to display what weapons were inside the Doom-vee so that I could tell from a glance what dice I needed to roll, as you can see the look-out grot on 'Da Squasha' is armed with a looted plasma pistol to represent the plasmagun armed vets inside.
Hopefully I'll have the 5h page of the comic to show you guys later this evening.

With the army completed I'm now able to turn my attention back on to finishing the comic at last.
The original comic finished on page 6 but with the grot now using tanks I thought it would be a good idea to extend it and feature the grots becoming mechanized, that I just had to include a Doom-Vee in the comic

Da Doom-vee'z 2nd Wave
Here are the Doom-vees 4 and 5...
Not much to say about the 'Grot Box' except that when it was destroyed in a game by a squadron of 3 vendettas the only two veterans that survived got revenge by blowing up 2 of them. "Da Grotz do love dere doom-vees dat much!"
This one will be Kaptin Squigscream's when he's acting as platoon commander. Hence the reason I added the sheild and the grot militia in the lookout spot.
The banner came later and after a few games the militia had come lose and had to be glued back on, however I noticed that if he was lent back he'd be looking at the grot on the banner as if he weren't heppy with little one's actions but the little grot didn't care what he said, so I glued him in that postion.

You should put it in Dakka Fiction instead, the background is for actually GW published stuff, the fiction is personal fluff and stories.

TOMORROW WE REBEL BOYZ!
Well while I didn't get the craters done in time the whole army is ready plus the last chapter of the grot rebellion origins comic.
When I added the extra two pages explaining the grots becoming mechanised I changed one key point: In the original comic grotsnik was shaking hands with the Inquisitor and formed an alliance, now that ain't right!
So I had him do the proper more greenskin thing and had him kill off the inquisitor.
Another detail that was added was the rivals story, you see there's a player at my club that has militarized blood axes with blue camo, which I thought would make a fitting arch-enemy and rival for the grots.
I really wanted the last box to be impressive so I added some extra details to Nachomon's original artwork. Though it does feel a bit rushed as I needed to get it completed for tomorrow, but it isn't like I can't go back and redo it.
ENTER KAPTIN SQUIGSCREAM!
I've found that in past projects when I've had have help from others, whether it was someone adding a extra level of detail or helping me to create a whole unit using skills that I have yet to prefect it's earned me a bit of resentment from other players that have known of their assistance.
So when my friend Alex offered to re-paint Kolonel Grotsnik I couldn't refuse, cause I knew he would do a fantastic job. But I knew that this would mean that I would have to create another grot commander to take to tournaments so that when the army was judged it would be all my own work.
Enter Kaptin Squigscream! The idea for him came from watching Starship troopers while working on one of the tanks and seeing the bad ass lieutenant of the roughnecks. So I decided to make a grot version of him but mean and menacing to his troops. That is why I choose to use a micro art studio head that had a more menacing look that anything GW has.
"Cauz da rebellion's gotten so big I need help tellin all da boyz watta do and
keepin dem in line. So I needed a 2nd in Kommand and dat boy iz Kaptin Squigscream.
Diz boy iz dead ard he took on a bunch a squigs once lost'em iz arm and leg
but da doks fixed him up good. He's tuff on da boyz and always ready ta dish
out sum disciplin, he'z so good dat da boyz get scared and work real ard
when earin iz metal footstepz. Plus he knows I'z da boss!"
I'm very pleased with him not only the fact he was created from parts from my bits box (with the exception of the head), but the quality of the skin detail which I layered up from dark angels green to get it to the best standard.
I added the squig as another command squad extra and he is based of my gaming club's logo.
Now judgement day tomorrow as the grots head to Open War!

To put it bluntly that's F***ing Brilliant mate, awesome idea (reference chart) and awesome army, I've always had a soft-spot for the Grot revolution, inspiring stuff!

OPEN REBELLION
Well the grots finally got the first real tournament experence yesterday and were well recieved by other players who found them interesting and amusing.
Here's a brief summary of the rounds.
ROUND 1 Cleanse (table quarters)
Against a space wolf player with 3 long fang squads with missile launchers and 2 wolf scout squads it weren't an easy fight and man this guy could make save rolls. Luckily he rolls to hit weren't as good and it came down to an intense last turn. Luckily a sgt managed to survive while all his squad had died and went on to capture a table quarter, sadly one of my opponent's sgts did the same thing so it was a draw, but because the tournament used Kill Pts in every game I suffered a Minor Loss.
ROUND 2 Objectives
Again I was against another beakie player but with the standard codex, this guys had 3 sets of predators with autocannons and heavy bolters with rhinos behind them with a tactical squad in and another 1 in drop pods and stern guard in the 2nd.
My manticore would have done some damage to the rhino/pred trains but I was constantly rolling 1 for the number of blasts and scattering way off. There was also a bit of a traffic jam as the chimeras at the front were stunned or immobilized. The Banewolf and Hellhound really did well in this game the Banewolf going full speed towards an objective through difficult terrain enduring enemy fire before clearing a combat squad off the objective in the last turn for my troops to claim.
Again it was down to last turn with my grots frantically trying to dislodge a combat squad from an objective they were contesting. Luckily my opponent failed to run enough distance with a squad to claim another objective. So the final scores were 2-0; Major Victory.
ROUND 3 - RECON (Get scoring units into enemy deployment zone)
Female beakies this time with some allied guard, the guy put all his sisters in reserve so for the first two turns I was blasting 4 guard squads away with my entire army. When they arrived the sister squads went for the two flame tanks his Exorcists went after my hydras and blew up my manticore and the jumpback infantry multi-charged my 3 offensive doom-vees causing massive damage before killing or chasing off the squads inside. So nothing of mine made it into his deployment zone but I made sure nothing got into mine, with the exception of an weaponless exorcist. Final result: A Draw, however surprising I won on kill pts so Minor Victory.
Final Conclusion & Personal Note
All things considered it was fun day with some very close games, the only bad thing being the GW staff canteen food.
I didn't win best army; but overall I feel this is a good thing, because it's helped me realize that I've been recently focusing too much on the army awards as if they were a badge of approval that my armies need to have and that I'd be the one to win them.
That's not at all why I started doing fully converted armies, I built them to be unique and turn heads and to inspire other players to do their own, which the grots have done very well.
So I think it's time I got back to focusing on what really matters; which is making the army look good and seeing tournament army awards as a small bonus and not as objective I should arrogantly try and obtain.
DIZ IZ NOT DA END
Normally my projects feature 1750pts and that's it but I intend to make extra units for this army so that I can make alternative lists, so here's what I'll be converting in the future...
Thundersquig Gunship (Vendetta)
Doom-Vee Wreckages
Grot Militia (Infantry Platoon)
2nd Battle Bruiser (Leman Russ)
2nd Manticore conversion.
& Possibly a Psyker Battle Squad
So keep an eye on this log, I hope to have the thundasquig flying for Throne Of Skulls next month.

It's good to know you had fun in the tourny even if you didn't win.
I may be attending (as a spectator or a player) one of your upcoming tournaments (If I get round to finishing off the very last of my CSM) so it would be nice to see the Thunder Squig Gunship.
And I thought I should add something else (given you mentioned that it is good to know that you have inspired people to do conversions); It was after seeing your fully converted Grot Rebellion and Zanthorian Machine Cult armies that I became inspired to try out my own conversions and to try and have every marine in my CSM army slightly converted in some way (or another).
I'm also lookin' forward to seein da rest of dese units dat 'ill be joinin da Rebellion!

KAMPIN IN DA BUNKA!
I didn't get time to upload this Doom-vee before the tournament, but better late than never.
This one houses the 5th Grot Trooper squad which is armed with long ranged heavy weapons. As a result it rarely moves, instead it holds an objective in my deployment zone whilst shooting it's 9 anti-infantry shots.
I decided to use the plated wheels on this one rather than letting them go to waste and fitting a old marine dozer blade on the front, to give it a more heavier look than the standard Doom-vees. Special thanks to monkeytroll who donated the blade to da rebellion.
Other little details include the sniper grot in the lookout and the missile silo for the rokkit gunner, cause it's far too risky to have him trying to shoot his rockets out the windows.
Anyway time to get back to work on the wreckage templates.

I'm the git what robbed you of the best army award with my three-week hack-job blue beastmen daemons. Given the amount of effort involved in each army; sure mine was a pain in the backside to get ready, but it still pales in comparison. However, given that the award is player-voted, my faith in snow bases, bright colours and big bold banners to win the 'oooh shiny' votes seems to have paid off.
I think the problem you have is that from 10 feet or so away, it's hard to tell apart from an actual Imperial Guard army. It has some red tanks, and some green foot soldiers. Lots of armies have red tanks, and lots of armies have green (camo) soldiers. It's only up close that you get to appreciate the rampant awesomeness that is the grot rebellion. I think you need something big and outlandish to really catch people's eyes. Look at the three best army winners:
40K - Bright blue, big things, big banners. Absolute painting quality: ok. Conversion quality sketchy at best.
Fantasy: Skaven. Two enormous hell-pit abominations plus one big ass giant. No real bright colours, but glossy bases are literally shiny. Conversions all over the shop; entertaining ones generally involving the painful death of empire soldiers.
Epic: Imperial Guard airforce using Aeronautica Imperiallis planes. The actual models were out of scale, but compared to the other armies, they were eye catching as a result.
I think what you need is to build something huge and eye catching and generally grot-awesome. A giant inflated squig-Zeppelin for a vendetta or three for example. Banna-wavas with huge propaganda posters. A bunch of grots herding a captured Weirdboy to use as a PBS. Something people can spot a mile off, and make folks look closer.

Some doomvee wreckage would be cool to throw down when they go belly up. The Infantry platoon has some nice options, but you've got some infantry already... So my money is on the Psyker Battle Squad. I'm planning one, myself, and I thought I'd share the idea with you: Grot Survivors of the Shock Attack Gun, driven insane and imbued with explosive powers by their trip through the warp. It would work well for the rebellion, I think, to have them take refuge in the sympathetic arms of their brethren. Though, I'm not sure sympathetic is the right word... *shrug*
I'm excited to see what comes of the Thundersquig... anything squig related perks my ears up. Also- I was wondering where those tires went. I would have thought the command-vee would get them, but then you posted the pic and there they weren't. I like the heavier look, with the blade.

Post by: Ducus Atreides
Just started to read this one and found it great! But I did notice a running gripe you had with the tires.
When I was in collage I did a class for auto design, The way that they made the tires might help you.
They made a silicon mold of the desired tire and then poured plaster into the finished mold. You could make four one piece molds and with proper care a single mold can make hundreds of tires.
To prep the plaster tires you can just sand the bottom of the tire so it sits flat when mounted on the vechicle, this creates a illusion of the vechicles weight on the tires. And it looks real enough that if properly painted when photographed a car model looks like the real thing.
I was wondering if you have tried making bases for your vechicles, that would make them stand out on the battlefield and when on display looks cool.

WRECKED!
In a mech army with so many transport vehicles wreckage templates are really necessary. Originally I had planned to use the 40k craters but 3 of them were far too big.
So I instead decided to create 4 of my own using the fantasy movement trays as a base, which were roughly the same size as the doom-vees. Luckily I had lots of spare bits and in order to get some of the small hull view ports needed for the Doom-vees i had ordered 3 leman russ hull bits off ebay.
I then began tearing them apart and using Milliput modelling putty to put it all together on the base using the micro art studio's terrain marker as a reference.
However before I began painting it I gave them a heavy coat of watered down PVA. This created an extra level of protection, which was needed since they'll have models placed on them, plus be stored and transported regularly.
I likely come back to them later and add some further detail such as dust marks but for the moment I need to get the Thundasquig Gunship built in time for the Throne Of Skulls tournament in 15 days!

ANOTHER PROJECTS ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS!
With the ThundaSquig now assembled and being painted up ready for next week’s Throne Of Skulls tournament I'm likely to take a break from the grots. I’ll build one of the extra units now and then which I mentioned earlier.
Anyway I’m hear to announce that my next project is a Pre-Heresy Night Lords Jump Pack Army; right now it’s just in the planning stages so I’d be grateful for any feedback on the unit concepts and what type of bases to use on the log (Not on this one however!). Just click on the pic below…
Speaking of Thundasquig Gunships I might have just the model...

Of course its perfect, GW has seen your amazing grot army and made a gunship designed with the aesthetics of a (rather square) Squig (with wings). As you can see they have obviously seen your "Squig-Tanks" and decided to try and make a vehicle perfect for your armies overall design aesthetic.
Real shame that this thing is supposed to be a Stormraven...
Pretty shameful attempt by GW to make a Stormraven given the awesome conversions out there.
I would love to see the "Stromraven Gunship" as a Thunda-Squig Gunship.

That is what GW came up with for the Stormraven? That thing is an abomination. It could never fly in atmosphere (rather important for a drop ship). It laughs in the face of basic principles of flight.
I know its a sci-fi space ship, but the damn thing is way too front-heavy with way too tiny wings. It's not even remotely asthetically pleasing.
The majority of the kitbashes I've seen for the Stormraven put this thing to shame.
All that being said, it's perfect for a dropship inspired by a flying squig... Just put rediculous eyes on the shroud behind the dorsal turret and teeth around the front hatch and you're pretty much done.

DA AIR-EADZ R ERE!
Well at long last the grots have got some air support and just in time for the Throne Of Skulls tournament this weekend, I’ll start off with an old favourite…
Originally the old Heli-Cooka models that were deep striking sentinels from the previous guard codex were going to gather dust in my bits box, however someone at the Open War tournament was disappointed when they found out that they weren’t included in the new army.
So I decided to rebuild one and add it for the Thunda-Kopta’s base. At first it was just for scenery but then I decided to arm it with 2 heavy bolters so I could have the option to arm my Vendetta with heavy bolter sponsons when I wanted to use them. I saw him again at the Throne Of Skulls tournament this weekend and he was pleased to see them back in the army.
“Stripbolt az made da old Heli-cooka’s betta by armin dem with heavy shootas and givin da more
powa so dey can fly higher. Dey iz are main air fightaz and often help out da bigga Thunda-Koptas!”
At long last I finally got the Vendetta completed; taking a good week to build and paint, I managed to finish it off at midnight on Friday before the Throne Of Skulls this weekend. Sadly despite turning it into a twin-bladed choppa it didn’t look very groty compared to the rest of the army, So I decided to paint the plates metal to give it a more ork looted Valkyrie feel, plus I gave it some teeth.
I was going to use Dreadnought lascannons for both sides so I could swap them for missile launchers (for the rocket pods) but instead I used the same bits that I used for the Dakka Tanks with Lascannon barrels. The blades were a simple plasticard build with magnets.
“Diz iz da best tank in da grot rebellion, diz iz da Thunda-Kopta! We’z only got a few of dem, cause
we ad to nick dem from da humies cauz ya can’t turn a humie fighta grotty aftar it’z crashed see!
Dey av lotz a zapp guns for tank bustin and can swoop in and save sum da
boyz after dey lost da Doom-vee. Now Stripbolt’z workin on da Thunda-Squig gunship!”
I also got a photo of the pilots before I glued the cover down. Overall it’s a great centre piece and I like how it completely overshadows the Grot-kopta escort.
As you can tell I’ve just been to Throne Of Skull’s tournament this weekend and had a fantastic time. So tomorrow I’ll will upload a small report on the grot’s first day and their battles with the Imperial Guard, Deathwatch and Orks.

THRONE OF SKULLS TOURNAMENT REPORT
Well the grots got stuck into their first weekend tournament on Saturday and I had a great time with lots of fun and close games, interesting people and a good overall atmosphere.
“We av one goal boyz, da beat da humies!”
There was one award I wanted in the entire tournament which all the players are told it to wished me luck on and that was ‘The Best Guard Player’. Due to the new system averages would be calculated for each race after every game and the person who got the highest margin from the average score would be the best player of that race and would have a chance of winning the overall prize.
The seer irony of an army of gretchin winning such an award was just too tempting.
“So diz iz wat da Kolonel az givin me ay!”
Here the 1500pt list for the weekend, I made a last minute change, replacing my useless Leman russ with the bane wolf and some other upgrades. Cause lets face it if it can’t make 1 kill against a deep striking Blood Angels army it isn’t doing the job right!
Squigsceam’s Command Squad: 4 Meltaguns
Chimera: Heavy Flamer
Veteran Squad: 3 Plasmaguns
Chimera: Heavy Flamer
X3 Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns
X3Chimera: Heavy Flamer
Banewolf: Heavy Flamer & Smoke Launchers
Hellhound: Heavy Flamer & Smoke Launchers
Vendetta: Heavy Bolter Sponsons
2 Hydras
Manticore
“Why dey keep callin us Orks Boss? We’z not orks we’z grots!”
The army was well received by both the tournament officials and other players who loved the character of the army.
However they were a few people who took a while to recognise it as a imperial guard army despite the Valkyrie and hordes of tanks with chimera turrets on. 1 player asked if the Thunda-Kopta was a Deff-kopta; gotta say that’s one huge and expensive deff-kopta! Most bizarre of all was when I came back on Sunday to find that the organisers had listed me on the line-up sheet as a ork player, I asked them about it and they said they had looked at the comic and not the army list.
ROUND 1 “Humie Fighta kuming in fast boss!!!”
Mission: Capture & Control
Setup: Pitched Battle
Opponent: Imperial Guard
The worst opponent for my army to face would be one with lots of long ranged anti-tank, and sadly for the first round I was against an army that featured 4 vendettas, 1 Lascannon heavy weapon team and a hydra… Ouch!
He choose to go first so I put the whole army in reserve knowing I would have more of a chance of getting into melta range if I drove on full belt with smoke launchers. I had also put one of the veterans squads into the vendetta and had an empty chimera to act as a shield.
I was dreading having to run this gauntlet of 15 lascannons, but then my opponent did something I didn’t expect. He turbo-boosted all his Vendettas and Valkyrie to my side of the board! In my 2nd turn 3 melta chimeras drove on to the board; 2 went after the vendettas closest to the board with the hellhound and empty chimera shielding them, while the other drove on with smoke launchers looking to go after the other 1. Meanwhile the vendetta outflanked dropping the metla vets behind cover. My shooting phase was brutal; the melta vets destroyed the Hydra, 1 Vendetta from a squadron was shot down and the other was shaken, the occupants burnt to a crisp by the chimera’s heavy flamer, the other chimera killed 1 lascannons team sending the other running. Plus a lucky lascannon shot from my vendetta got a shaken result on the 2nd squadron, leaving my opponent with 1 vendetta able to fire next turn.
This had a large impact on the rest of the game; as the rest of my force arrived the other vendettas and valkyrie was shot out the sky with the hellhound and bane wolf making toast out of the surviving occupants. I lost my command chimera but the squad survived and finished off the enemy vets that had survived my flamer attacks. My opponent did have a pask punisher but with all the armour 12 in my army it only managed to get 1 round of shooting killing 2 of the veterans in cover on his objective before being killed by the chimera with metla vets inside.
The last turn had me finishing off the rest of his force with my plasma veterans killing a command squad that had destroyed my manticore and a poor infantry squad that has been running for most of the game after their vendetta has been destroyed being mowed down by both the hellhound and bane wolf on either side!
“ENEMIE WIPED OUT BOSS WE AV VICTORY!”
“LETZ EAT!”
Setup my army for judging and went for lunch, but while in previous tournaments a full meal was provided greedy GW didn’t include one thing… NO PUDDING! (or morning tea & coffee)
ROUND 2 “Dem greenskin hatin beakie‘s trying a sneak attack on us boss!!!”
Mission: Annihilation
Setup: Spearhead
Opponent: Space Marines
I was now up against a Deathwatch themed space marine drop pod army with Pedro, 2 Sternguard and 3 tactical squads all armed with lots of combi-meltas, Meltaguns and multi-meltas.
This setup worked to my advantage allowing me to setup a solid defence with my units packed closely together with the flame tanks at the side and chimeras at the front, he choose for me to go first so I fired the smoke launchers on the outlining vehicles.
Then 2 stern guard and a tactical squad with pedro leading the way arrived. They clearly didn’t like the boss as one stern guard unit blew up his chimera and the other used rounds that ignored cover saves to gun down the 2 survivors. The tactical squad’s drop pod scatted off and they only mangered to get a shot on the Hellhound which bounced off.
The grots clearly didn’t them killing the boss as the two stern guard were fired upon by everything in the army with the exception of 1 chimera and Hellhound that went after the tactical squad. The Banewolf doing the most damage with it’s chem cannon afterwards 1 stern guard was running away and pedro was left with only 3 stern guard and the tactical squad had also lost half it marines but passed it’s leadership test.
Next turn and the 2nd tactical squad arrived, can’t remember what they shot at thou? Meanwhile Pedro went in at close quarters and blew up another chimera and the 1st tactical squad immobilised another chimera. Again the returning volley was nasty; the bane wolf moved in and killed 8 of the tactical squad that had arrived with the veterans from the chimera that was smashed by Pedro gunning down the last two. The other tactical squad was also wiped out by plasma vets and the hellhound and to finish it off I fired on Pedro and his last stern guard with all the Vendetta’s weapons. Sadly he allocated all the lascannons hit on the stern guard but then rolled 1s and 2s for his armour so that was him dead.
Now my opponent had 1 tactical squad to deploy against a 3rd of my army in the end he decided to go on a glory charge and deep striked right into the heart of my army. Meanwhile the fleeing stern guard had regrouped and was hiding in terrain. He destroyed the bane wolf and despite the barrage from my army the remaining sergeant and melt gunner went on to destroy a chimera and assault it’s occupants killing 3 of them but the grots held fast.
The last turn was spend destroying the drop-pods and killing off that one cowering survivor, I tried to get another squad into the combat but they failed to scramble over the bane wolf wreck, but the squad didn’t really need the help as the marine seragent and melta gunner were beaten down by 6 guardsmen. Nice try Deathwatch.
“ALL DEAD BOSS… BOSS? OH YEAH I FORGOT!”
AN UNEXPECTED VISIT?
During the 2nd break I was wondering round and after coming down from the miniatures hall and one of the events team came up to me and asked I could put some infantry on the table.
He then told me that one of the guys from the ‘What’s New Today’ crew from the GW website had come to photograph some of the armies and wanted to see the infantry models that went with the tanks. The guy took some photographs of my grots before asking me about what inspired me to build them and how I constructed the Doom-Vees.
So with luck the Grot Rebellion may appear on the GW website!
ROUND 3 “DIZ IS IT BOYZ, TIME FOR PAYBACK,!!!”
Mission: Seize Ground
Setup: Dawn Of War
Opponent: Orks
Hurray, the grots first ork opponent, he was a great chap we had some friendly greenskin fightin talk about who was better as we started. His army was a ork horde with Warboss on a bike, 2X30 Sluggas boyz, 30 shootas boyz, 20 storm boyz, 10 bikers and 9 Killa Kans. He wasn’t too keen to fight my army of tanks with his only real anti-tank being the war boss and nob’s power klaws.
So the slaugter began with both our armies arriving in turn 1, I was 2nd and used my searchlights to light up his killa-kan shield allowing my vendetta to destroy 2. My army remained where it was as I had no intention of moving towards the horde, first killing off the storm boyz and then the killa kans. My opponent main concern was my Manticore charging his bikers from the other corner of the board at it, turbo-boosting them through two bits of terrain however my firepower wasn’t enough to stop them and the warboss made it to the Manticore with 1 wound left. Defenceless my Manticore was surely dead then he rolled his penetration results; 2 shaken, 2 stunned, 1 weapons destroyed and immobilized it was unbelievable there was a grot god, he was then gunned down the next turn by a multi-laser!
I then went on the offensive with the Banewolf moving 12 and firing both templates into the shoota boyz killing 18 of them, I then used some other units to whittle the rest of the squad to 5 but they passed the leadership test.
He then went on the offensive with the survivors assaulting the Banewolf and the other squad of 23 assaulting the Hellhound, destroying both tanks. But units can’t consolidate from combat with a vehicle so 2 of my chimera with their heavy flamers moved in for the kill on the hellhound’s closely packed destroyers, wiping them out. Meanwhile another chimera wiped out the Banewolf’s destroyers.
Soon all 130 orks were wiped out!
“REVENGE FEELS GUD DON‘T IT BOSS!”
So with Saturday out the way and with 3 opponents completely wiped out my chances of winning the best guard general were pretty good. But how will the Grot Rebellion fair against the Death Guard & Chaos Daemons on Sunday, find out tomorrow?

THRONE OF SKULLS TOURNAMENT REPORT PART 2
After a mass killing spree on Saturday I was looking forward to getting back to the tournament and after clearing up a matter with the judges about my army being listed as orks not guard I was ready for round 4. Just 2 more round to win and my grots could go all the way!
ROUND 4 “DIZ BEAKIES SMELL A BIT RIPE!”
Mission: Seize Ground
Setup: Pitched Battle
Opponent: Death Guard
This looked to be an exciting match fighting, playing against 3 units of death guard with rhinos, Ahriman, a Winged Deamon Prince, 3 Obliterators and a greater daemon, being a former Death Guard player I knew that they’d be a pain to put down.
We both setup our armies with him going first and despite all my jokes about the chances of my Vendetta being shot down in the first turn I didn’t put it in reserve and sure enough it was destroyed. Ahriman used bolt to immobilise the Banewolf and the D.Prince advanced behind 2 of the rhinos with the dread while the other moved towards an objective on the other side of the board.
I moved up my forces and returned fire the mutli-lasers and hydras shots bouncing off the Obliterators the command chimera moved at full speed towards the massed death guard. My Manticore unleashed a full 3 templates on the closely packed Death Guard vehicles stunning both rhinos, shaking the dreadnought and causing a wound to the D.Prince.
Next turn Ahriman and his Death Guard got out of their stunned rhino and the dread moved through some woods towards an objective while Ahriman fired 2 bolts into a chimera immobilising it. The Obliterators shot at the Hydras causing them to lose 1 auto cannon each. 2 Doom-vees went a full speed towards the obliterators as I felt I needed to bring them down. First the Manticore fired upon the stunned rhino which Ahriman had just go out of and with 3 sgt 10 templates exploded both rhinos and caused another wound to the D.Prince. I then used the Hellhound and command squad to decrease the squad to 3 death guard with Ahriman whilst the immobilised Doom-Vee Meltaguns shot off the dreadnought’s multi-melta...
Sadly there is far too much to write down in this round so I’ll get to the crucial last turn.
By the 6th turn the 2 chimeras and their squads I had sent after the obliterators has been destroyed by a death guard squad and Greater Daemon leaving 2 Death Guard on that objective. Another chimera had be destroyed but the crew was now safe in the wreckage holding down an objective but had both Ahriman and the Obliterators closing in on them. Kaptin Squigscream had charged into combat with the last death guard from the 2 squads holding him up for a turn but now he was moving towards the third objective. If the game had ended there I would have won but instead went on to another turn.
Ahriman burned the squad on the 1st objective to a crisp while the obliterators and the last Death Guard blasted the squad holding down the 2nd objective luckily they passed the cover saves and remained where they were. I had also took my own measures by driving the Hellhound through a piece of terrain and a wreckage to contest the 3rd objective. The game would have ended in a draw if my opponent hadn’t choose to rapid fire his Death Guard’s plasma gun instead of running him a extra 4 inches.
That was by far the closest game I’ve ever had!
“DANG DAT WAS CLOSE, BUT WE‘Z WON!”
ARMY JUDGING
My army had been nominated along with 9 others, the more interesting ones included; a Tyranid Mechanicus army funnily enough, 2 very well painted Eldar armies and a nicely converted Daemon army that featured 4 lots of 1 Big Daemon, an Elite and 1 Troop for each books of chaos. That got my vote. They was quite a lot of people gathered around the grots which made me happy, I could walk away with 2 awards.
ROUND 5 “WE GOT DEAMON TROUBLES!”
Mission: Capture & Control
Setup: Pitched Battle
Opponent: Daemons
I had fought this opponent in the Yorkshire Doubles back in August, but back then he was allied with imperial guard and I had orks both of which took most of the beating.
Sadly my dream of winning best guard army came to an end here as his fiends teared through my tanks like they’re were paper and that was before the daemon prince, fate weaver and Bloodthirster had arrived. I’ve never seen so many 5&6s lol! By turn 5 all my tanks were either destroyed or had no weapons and mobility. 3 of my 4 troops were gone with the last ones cowering in their bunker on the far side of the board.
But despite the clear loss I continued to have a good time. Now there was no way to kill off his troops I was focused on beating the Fateweaver in combat with Squigscream as he only had 2 attacks and if he lost combat there was a chance he would disappear. All the time he was trying to turn Squigscream into a squig with Bolt Of Change. A 30pt commander beating a 355pt daemon would have been awesome and I nearly did it but he passed his invulnerable save so it was another draw. Then the Bloodthrister came in a spoilt the fun by landing on the poor guy. After which I surrendered.
“ALL GUD DINGS DO COME TO AN END… NOW RUNAWAY!”
AWARD CEREMONY & CONCLUSION
The weekend had been fantastic with 4 wins and 1 loss I had the time of my life, if had gotten a draw instead of a loss I would have won best guard player being just 2pts behind! Oh well always next time.
Sadly I didn’t win Best Army, The Eldar army won it but I can’t say I’m not surprised it was painted to a professional level. But at least I got a certificate for being nominated.
Now I plan to return to another Throne Of Skulls tournament perhaps in the Spring, but for the moment my next tournament will be in January at Maelstrom games and after this weekend I‘m looking forward to it.

"IZ IT OVER BOSS?... NOT TILL DA FAT SQUIG FLYS!"
Well it looks like I'm not done with the Grot's yet. After 2 months of games Squigscream shot the Leman Russ crews dead since they rubbish and probably couldn't hit a ork Gargant titan! I then replaced it with the Banewolf for the Throne Of Skulls and it preformed brilliantly, however this meant I’ve had to scrap the Squig Tanks at 1750 so I’m now taking Marbo AKA Grot Agent Spookums!
However I’m unable to use characters at the Uprising Tournament in January so I’ve obtained all the bits needed to create a third Dakka Tank body so I can field my Mega-Lobba with my Dakka Tanks!
But that’s not all I’m now looking to create a 2nd Vendetta and while I was thinking of using the Storm Raven I much prefer helicopter conversions as they look more like something that can hover and move sideways. So I’m now thinking of either building another twin-bladed Thunda-Kopta or converting a Valkyrie into a something a bit different; Any suggestions or ideas?

Why not chop the wings off the valc and put some heli-blades on top? It looks pretty good: A goodle search lead my back to Dakka and this thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/284112.page A nice renegade, city fight style army. ... and this dakka thread, too: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/237397.page But the helicopter conversion looks good. Baring something like that, I would look to fallen foes for inspiration... after all what's better than looted gear.

I was thinking about that idea 'The Good Green' I just don't like how the weapons and wings looked slapped on at the sides.
Also some further feedback on my first Thunda-Kopta might help me a great bit on coming up with ideas for the 2nd?

I was thinking along similar lines to GG, maybe with double-rotors like this:
edit : ahh, beaten whilst I searched for the image Automatically Appended Next Post: Howabout if you kept the wings, maybe shortened them, or inverted them and had rotors on the ends, kinda like the Osprey

Oh my, I hadn't realized that I had forgoten to comment on the Thunda Kopta... I like it. I like the grot pilots a lot. I don't think it matches the level of conversion of the rest of your army, though.
I don't really me the wings/weapons mount to be the point of what I was getting at, either. More the lack of wings and the rotor to be on the top, or sort of attached to the sides, ala the old ork kopta with the two rotors off set.
The weapons could be grot turret pods all over the hull, like old WW2 B-17 (or something) planes.

The Good Green wrote:Oh my, I hadn't realized that I had forgoten to comment on the Thunda Kopta... I like it. I like the grot pilots a lot. I don't think it matches the level of conversion of the rest of your army, though.
The problem was that the only way to convert it was into a helicopter version like the one above which is used quite a lot, so instead I tried a small conversion based on the heli-drones in an old cartoon I watched: (skip to 2:24) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkGnLWRp0j4&feature=BF&list=PL7D66F7128C71B2B3&index=55
So unless you guys can find an valkyrie conversion I could use, I might have to build a copy of the Thunda-Kopta.

Good point Proiteus. There isn't too much to do with the valk... that's easy to see, anyway. The pilots looks so good, but I want to say, try looking at it without the cockpit on it. I think it would look more like a squig then... maybe they found a valk that had been shot down? But I'm not sure that will lead anywhere either. Maybe mod it with some Tau engines or something. Instead of the wings, slap some Devilfish engines on there so they can swivel. See how that looks... I'm trying to think up some valk conversions myself... not that I have one, but I'm trying to plan the ships for the Wicked Peter crew. ps: that was the last cartoon I got into.

Only issue I have with the thunda-kopta is just what yourself and GG have said - it doesn't match the grottyness of your other conversions. Had only seen one chopper conversion before, hadn't realised it was that popular - although as it's the obvious route maybe I should have.
Looking at the beast wars drones, they have that 'w' look, so maybe flipping the wings over would work, putting the rotors at the tips this time (sorry, know I'm repeating myself there ). GG has a good idea with the tau engines though, that would change up the silhouette a bit. Maybe 4 smaller 'thrusters', 2 per side, with a modified cockpit?
10465
Post by: Proiteus
I'm found this conversion which could make a great osprey look alike if I replaced the jets with rotar engines, maybe using parts from a defiler or something...
Problem is while the rocket pods look okay I have doubts that Lascannons would look as good attached to the wings. I could have grot heavy weapon teams with lascannons in the doors but that raises line of sight issues. It's the same with the conversions without the wings, I could attach the lascannons on the side over the door using dreadnought weapons but it would mean the copter would have to be directly facing the target.
The current Thunda-Kopta model is a solid conversion with it's only main issue is being that compared to the rest of the army it's appears lacking in creativity. But it's so damn hard to come up with a conversion that doesn't bastardise the model or hasn't already been done!

Post by: Gathering Storm
I think that you should go with an option simlar to that one. Swivel engines would be a challenge and are a lot rarer than other kopta conversions out there. It would definitely stand out from the crowd a lot more.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Hmmm, I think the reason the pods look good is that they're tubular, complementing the jets. If you had a more upright 'body' for the rotors (nacelle?) the las-cannons might be a contrast with it. Then again, I may be just waffling
25937
Post by: Nowlan
I'd leave them as jets/thrusters, but I think they would look better in some sort of housing, perhaps something looking more like one of the engines from one of the tau ground vehicles.

DAT'Z REAL KILLY, GAZZA KAN YA BUILD ME SUM!
I'm now considering creating a 2nd Thunda-Kopta but feature the cool converted wings from the Valkyrie model pictured above; making those angles where the landing gear goes appear like engines with some fuel tanks and other bits and place the rotar blades above them. It would look more like a choppa then than a rocket powered gunship, plus the wing mounted lascannons from my thunda-kopta would probably look good at that angle. Not sure about adding the wings at the front thou.
What do you think, would using those wings on a Thunda Kopta improve it?
You can see more of that awesome valk conversion here > http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/7328875/1/

I really like the thunder-copter but I think the valkyrie wings are a bit too large. What about something a bit more like this? Random high-tech Super-Hind from the film Avalon (that everyone should go and watch right now... go on, off you go!)
17244
Post by: The Good Green
The new wing system looks very promising. What about putting a turret on it? Either on the top or bottom, OR on the sides were the body narrows to the cockpit. You would have to do something else with the sensors/lights that are there, but it might look cool and solve the LOS issues. And that one looks like a promising avenue as well, Flinty. *edit* While we're on the topic of kopta conversions, check out these sentinel conversions: http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/?showtopic=11922&st=40 Might get some creative juices flowing for a brand new, as of yet un thought of conversion for the valk.

While it's a cheap and fun looking conversion it has many faults due to it's size...
1st: I can't justify it' being able to carry 10 grot guardsmen, so I would have to sacrifice it’s transport ability, and if I make the model bigger it becomes a hazard on the tabletop.
2nd and the main reason is it's only the size of the Valkyrie's main body without the wings, tail and front cockpit meaning it would be unfair regarding it being in range for my opponent. Giving the impression that your modelling for your advantage is one of the bit falls of converted armies, hence the reason I added the trailers to the Dakka Tanks to make up for it’s small length.

I think it would be a fun model to build anyway. Maybe it could be a HQ transport in the future: smaller transport, bigger guns? But I see your points about it's failure as a counts-as valk.
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
Hmm, I can definitely see why it would make a bad counts-as valk because of its size. Needless to say it would still make a very nice objective marker or a center piece for a diorama.
blambi- I am almost certain that the parts come from an IG bastion kit namely the power box that holds the lascannon on the top of the bastion. The only thing that puzzles me is that the thing that is holding the would-be lasgun at the front looks like it is from a baneblade which leads me to wonder where the rest of it is

Incorrect, it's actually the defence line kit: barricades on the side and turret placement for the cockpit.

Ah yes, but I think the cockpit comes with the bastion as I found this part in the kit and I am pretty sure it is the same.

MORE TANKS!!!!
As I said before I thought I was done with this project but I'm now being pulled back into to create more tanks for variations of my army list. All of which will be completed in the next few months. The thought of an Infantry Platoon is out the window cause if it's ain't a tank it's not going on the board (with the exception of Agent Spookums).
So heres whats coming up...
Da Mega Lobba: Originally an alternative turret for my Dakka tanks but since marbo can't be used in the tournament in January I'm planning to field one alongside the two dakka tanks so I'm currently building a 3rd dakka tank for it to go on. The trailer will be filled with explosive shells and ammo and I'm waiting for the parts to arrive to convert a small crane for lifting them up to the cannon.
Thunda-Squig Gunship: The current Thunda-Kopta is lacking when compared to the rest of the army so I plan to build a 2nd one, but this time convert the wings like this conversion I found. I would mount the blades on the ends of the wings like an osprey but that seems like to much work when massive blades placed in the same places as the thunda-kopta will look just as good.
Rokkit Kommand: I've been looking for ways to convert the old GAZA missile tank into a 2nd manticore with grots on the top pointing out targets and calling in missile strikes like the 'Air-Strika' but none of the concepts would look as good as the Air-Strika tank. Then yesterday I saw someone working on a banewolf who had yet to add the fuel tanks, the large empty space on the back would make an ideal place to put computers, radios, maps and turn into a real command bunker. Better yet use the Manticore body so I can have the big dish and the hatch that looks like a pillbox. Funnily enough I won a chimera in my club's xmas raffle today so I plan to take it to GW tommorrow and trade it in for a manticore for £10.

Pro,
If you used a longer Zepplin balloon, you would solve the nose-to-tail length problem. You could then add some railing that extends out to the sides, with hooks for the grots being transported to hold (or be mounted) onto. Make it about the length of the wings, and you have the width problem solved. If you're worried about the mounting ramp, add some halfpipes under the railing that "directs" the falling grots to the proper disembarkation location.
Alternatively, you could add the same railing, but put small propellers running down the length (say 3-5 on each side) to help give the Zepplin lift. Place handholds onto the exterior of the body, or widen it a bit, and you have room for your grot troops.
In fact, if you essentially took two of your bodies, you could have them side by side with a ramp in the back. That gives you room for the grots. Propulsion could come from adding a rotating joint (say, the ball joint from a killa kan) to your propeller rails, allowing them to turn.

Okay guys this is getting a little out of hand, there only one aircraft I'm working on and that's the Thunda-Squig Gunship.
Which will be based on an CV-22 Osprey after I discovered that combining a manticore & hellstrike missile together gets me a good looking plane engine which can be attached to the end of the wing with magnets so it can be rotated round to represent the vendetta hovering, moving slowly or going at full speed.

TROPHIES FOR DA BOYZ
When I was at Throne Of Skulls last year I had one of the closest games ever up to the final turn it was anyone’s game, I won through just because my opponent’s lone death guard didn’t run far enough to contest the point squad 3 was on. It was a great game.
So I've decided that whenever I have a really close and enjoyable game like that one providing I win it I‘ll add a trophy to the tank or doom-vee that turned the tide. In this case it was squad 3 who ran towards and held the last objective whilst being fired on so they get the death guard trophy.
I hope to claim many more trophies this year as I've got the Uprising tourney this money at Maelstrom and then a doubles at Warhammer World next month.

DA MEGA LOBBAS JOIN DA MAIN ARMY
Well I've got a tournament next week that doesn't allow special characters so I've had to replace Marbo with a griffon mortar. Problem is it was only a variant for my Dakka Tanks for smaller games so I've had to create a third body plus ammo trailer complete with loader arm. It also features a Heavy Flamer instead of a Heavy Bolter.
"GONNA BUILD SOMETHING DEAD KILLY!"
When I completed the first Vendetta conversion it was met with a lot of disappointment, which is understandable as I had heavily converted everything in the army and to have my centre-piece be nothing more than a the standard model with rota blades attached was very poor. However the newer version will meet the high conversion standards of the army without a problem. Here's a preview pic of one of the magnetised engines on the raised wings that can be rotated to any angle.
So what do you think to the new engines?

“CALLIN DOWN DA THUNDA!!!”
At last a worthy centre-piece for the grot rebellion; behold the Thunda Squig gunship!
The engines are made out of Manticore missiles with the hell strike missiles from the Valkyrie underneath them, throw in some extra bits and some plasticard and you have a Osprey Vendetta conversion. The engines and weapons are magnetised so can be rotated and moved, it also allows for easy transport. The bottom pic showing it when going at full speed and the middle left representing it not moving at all (which is never happens).
“Dem Thunda-Koptas got dem selfs all shot up, so I ordered Gazza to make me sumthing dead ard and xtra killy
and dose new Thunda-Squig Gunships do just dat. No only do dey bring da powa but dey can go real fast too!”
First day of the Uprising tournament went well with a victory against Blood Angels, Space Wolves annihilated off the board (1750 to 720 victory pts) and a close game against Eldar which ended in defeat due to 2 lone Dire Avengers keeping out of sight, dang pointy eared gits!
Looking forward to tomorrow where I might be pitted against an guard army of Squats who are also on the same points I am... BATTLE OF THE MIDGETS!

Not really as most of them are made from simple bits and part from the old grot rebellion army, with the exception of the bigger detailed tanks like the Thunda-Squig & Manticore the average price for the tanks (like the chimera) is £10-12.

DAY 2 OF DA UPRISIN
Well today’s been fun as I got to fight the 3 armies I said that I would love to fight the first round was against Squat guard so it was a battle of tiny proportions’.
Often when faced with lots of firepower like his army had with 3 vendettas and 2 Manticores my immediate reaction is to throw everything in reserve and let him have the first turn. Sadly I discovered that this is a foolish move when playing dawn of war as you don’t get to kill much on the first turn due to night fight, then by turn two his army was all setup and he crippled my force destroying key units and it when down hill from there final score (220-1280 victory pts).
Lesson learnt go second in night fight missions and Vendettas can’t move 6 when they outflank as they need to be completely on the board, so looks like I’ll be replacing the Astropath with an officer of the fleet model soon.
2nd game was a close one against a nice pre-heresy World Eaters army and while I did a lot of damage to his deployed forces it was the dreadnought and assault squad that came on later that torn through my army and killed 4 of my troop squads. There were so many parts where his units should have died but didn’t due to good dice rolling. It was a close last turn though, but sadly a loss for me with victory pts denied by the surviving assault terminator and assault marine.
The last game was the best one as I got to fight against an red skin ork walker army. With his force advancing and my army doing the best to slow it down. He had some lootaz but rolled poorly for them so only firing 1 shot per turn from each of them, we joked about how his grots were rebellin and had sabotaged the equipment. The hero of the game was clearly the Banewolf which shot up the side and flanked a large mob of boyz killing 5 boyz before taking a charge and backing up to kill another 18, sadly the nob survived with one wound when the game ended on turn 5. Final score 4-3 close victory for the rebellion.
He was one of the best opponents I’ve had at a tournament he even gave me a model that had lost an arm to add the head as a trophy on a Doom-Vee. Sadly the one that had done the most damage already had the death guard head. I likely but it on Da Bunka which stared down a dread and three kans which were out of assault range but dare not advance due to the melt vets hiding behind the hill it was on.
Anyway it’s been a fun tournament and I’ve really enjoyed myself and finishing 37th out of 80 very competitive players isn't bad. Maelstrom Games is a great gaming venue which I think has a bright future ahead of it and I look forward to returning later this year.
One thing I did learn from this tournament is that I need another Thunda-Squig so I brought one from the store which gives a fantastic 15% discount to tournament participants, which I’m hoping to have built in time for the Yorkshire Doubles next month.

TWO TINGS?
Two things I want to run by guys. First is a conversion idea I've had for my Officer Of The Fleet; it would be modelled using the old night goblin legs (with the skirt) and painted red with gold trim and white boots and gloves to create Kaptin Zapp of da grot fleet.
2nd is because I'm getting a 2nd Vendetta I'm going to have to drop the Hellhound from the competitive list, but because the model is a grot cafe it could easily count as a poison spraying banewolf lol, modelled with a alternative turret (similar to the GBH tank turret).
But first I'd like to ask which tank to you guys think is better looking the 'Little Grot' or the 'GBH Tank'?

The gbh imo, the grot on the top is just excellent.

I prefer the GBH due to the tracks, but the details on the Little Grot make it s much more characterful!
Also don't forget the Velour for the officer of the fleet

Its a real toughy but I think the GBH is better, the little grot 2 is good, and has a lot of character however.

DIZ LOOKZ LIKE A JOB FOR...
Due to the recent 40k FAQ I no longer want to outflank my Vendettas so the Astropath (I mean weirdgrot) is of no real use. So I replaced him with an Officer Of The Fleet and what better way to represent the fleet but with a grot in a strangely familiar but snazzy uniform.
I’ve also pinned him to the box so I can remove him and place him in my 2nd Manticore when I get round to building it. Might make a small snotling to go with him in future.
Another thing I worked on this week was the Leman Russ' plasma weapons so that I could turn my unused 'Battle Bruizer' into a 'Masta Blasta' which should be a lot more fun to use in higher point games like 2000 points.
Now I need to complete my 2nd Thunda-Squig in time for a doubles tournament next month.

WE NEED SOME OF DEM SNAZZY SHIRTZ BOSS!
We've been thinking about tournament team shirts at my gaming club with each one having a slogan on the back to suit the player, someone making the brilliant suggestion of mine being; "& Now For Something Completely Different" Sadly it's only a concept and I'm having doubts enough people will be interested to do it, so I'm thinking that I'll just make my own as I attending a lot of tournaments at the moment.
I plan to commission Nacho; the man behind the art style of the grot comek to create a image to be put on the opposite side of the shirt. So far I've had the following ideas...
Grotsnik holding an army case and tossing some dice around in his hand with a crazed grin on his face.
3 images of a warrior from each of my armies; A Krogg Warrior, An Iron Guard Robot & A Grot Sergeant
Or Grotsnik sitting a table... (with a grin)
Personally I like the sound of the first idea but I wanted to see what you guys thought and any other ideas you might have?

Post by: The Good Green
How about a MoO sitting behind the desk... with a grin. (as a model, not a shirt)

LET’Z TALK ZAPPAZ BOSS
Just a quick update, I’ve assembled the 2nd Thunda-Squig’s main body so with luck that will be flying soon.
I’ve also been thinking of a Medusa conversion replacing the dish on the Manticore with the FW Big Zappa so it would be like a grot fire prism; ordnance for normal discharge and small blast for a focused burst.
However the turret is not as big as it looks so it can’t really pull it off and sadly I don’t have the time to build the turret from scratch. The turret would look good for a devil dog melta cannon but I doubt I’ll use that unit in future. Someone did suggest I use the Battlewagon Lifter but that was far too big though it would make an awesome Deathstrike stand in with the weapon charging before firing a destruction bolt and depleting it’s energy, but far too much money and hassle for a unit I’ll rarely use.
ALRIGHT BOYZ WE GONNA RAGE WAR ERE & ERE
I really enjoying the Uprising tournament last month and it taught me that I need more long range firepower, that and think before you act. So with my arsenal being improved I’m looking forward to unleashing the Grot Rebellion on some more tournaments this year. So here a were da grots will rage war this year…
22nd Feb - Yorkshire 40k Doubles - Warhammer World
9th April - Open War XV - Maelstrom Games
11/12th June - Warpstorm Tournament - Maelstrom Games
16/17th July - Throne Of Skulls - Warhammer World (depending on what I hear about it?)
Hope to see some of you guys at one of these tournaments.

WHAT TA PAINT BOSS?
I'm currently painting up the 2nd Thunda-Squig and am currently thinking of what to paint on the nose, should I go with jaws like the last one or something different. Clearly I can't do female grots like WW2 planes as there is no such thing and I can't really paint a red squig on a red background.
So any thoughts or suggestions on what to add to the nose of the Thunda-Squig II?

You could paint a slogan on it like 'Ave a nice day' or just put 'Da thunda squig 2'. Or you could just paint on kill markings but underneat paint (lies)

IMHO, I think you should do something similar to the Doom-Vees, and not paint anything on the sides until you've used them a bit. Like, say for example, you test it out for a few games and find it is great at killing tanks, then put something related to that on there, or if it saves your Gitz from trouble often, maybe a Grot Angel?

RIDE OF DA THUNDA-SQUIGS!
Well the 2nd Thunda-Squig is now complete and since they’re pretty much the same I thought I’d just take some photographs of both gunships, sadly not together as my photobox is big enough. Off to the yorkshire doubles tommorrow at Warhammer World so I might take some pics there.
As you can see for the 2nd Thunda-Squig instead of writing the name I painted a symbol from each ork clan crossing off the ones the grots have defeated so far, I plan to save the goff one for a victory against a 4 battlewagon thraka list.
Now I’ve just got to create the kommand tank and paint up some Meltagrots and this project will be complete. As for my next big army project I've had 4 great ideas, which I will do first is currently be debated here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/347708.page

WE NEED BIG BLASTAZ & LOTZ OF DEM!!!
I went to the Yorkshire doubles yesterday and found out the joys of throwing down 5 plasma cannon templates on marines and terminators, this made me realise that instead of a 2nd Manticore I should convert plasma or in this case Blastas for the battle tank to solve my lack of long range marine killing weapons.
Like someone said when I uploaded the original ‘Masta Blasta’ tank the weapons looked too much like they belonged to the imperial guard. So with a few quick doodles at work and a bit of blue tac here is the rough version of the blasta weapons.
Some of you will notice that I’ve borrowed the idea of using the searchlight as a energy weapon from this conversion from Spikey Bits, only instead of having those arms that are ’too orky’ I’ve added some bits from the Manticore on the side. For the sponsons I created a smaller version using an old titan weapon and a few other bits.
That basically the rough idea, I thinking of painting lightning effects on the orbs thou I’m open to other suggestions?
Just wanted to run it by you guys and see what your thoughts were?

THE MASTA BLASTA
I had planned to build a 2nd Manticore but my guard army is seriously lacking in long range Anti-Marine weapons, but after playing a few games with a leman russ executioner I discovered the joy of throwing down 5 plasma cannon templates a turn. But at the time I was using the imperial plasma weapons which just didn’t look grotty enough so I converted up a set of new weapons; behold ‘The Blasta Tank’
We’z been avin a beakie problem; Ya see it’s dat dang armor of derz we
can’t get threw until we up close witch iz bad cause by den da beakies are
lobbing bombs threw da tank’s windows. However Gazza recently looted an
very killy humie tank and after seeing it melt sum beakies I told him to create
sum for the grot rebellion”
I was unsure how to paint the orbs at first, then I saw a episode of clone wars while visiting my family which featured this weapon. Using that as a reference I painted up the orbs and after two retries was happy with the result. I also added some small lighting effects, I also repainted ‘boom’ with ‘powa’.
So that the final model really, I just need to finish colour a small picture of Grotsnik for my tournament t-shirt which I requested from Nacho and this project will be finished.
