Some of you will have seen, commented or followed one of my project logs whether it was my Mechanicus Robots or my recent rebuild of my classic Grot Rebellion Army. Anyway with me now finishing up the last tank in the army the project is almost complete and it is time to start thinking about the next one.
I have 4 themed army ideas on the drawing board all of which are very interesting and will prove fun to build, paint and play with. However there are two problems first I can’t decide on which one to do first and second is I can only afford to do 2 maybe 3 of them so one will have to scrapped.

So since Dakka Dakka is where the best critique and interest is for my projects I’m hoping you guys can give me some useful feedback on the ideas and vote for which army concept you would like to see produced into a full 1750pt army. So here are the ideas…


I’ve always been a fan of barbaric humans in sci-fi such as Mad Max, Serenity, Waterworld even games like Fallout. This spawned the idea of an army of feral mad max like adhumans using the ork codex so I could use their ramshackle vehicles.
Later ideas included small mutants representing grots and a giant Ogryn like warriors as nobs.
These guys will be converted by mounting the ork torso on dark angel robes with the ork boots glued underneath. Then raise the head so it’s slouched forward and cover the lower part with a scarf or plate made from GS. They will be BIG!

Here are some practice models I created for a Digga Mob in an old Gorkamorka campaign.



The army would certainly turn heads and I feel players would be able to relate to it based on a post apocalyptic film or game that like. This army concept has had it's own log that illustrates some of the ideas in more detail HERE!

The drive to create this army came from many areas; 1st listening to Konrad Curze’ story in ‘The Dark King’ then reading the awesome back story for the Night Lords. 2nd was playing a Blood Angels jumper list as they appeared to be an interesting force to play and most importantly different to my current tank heavy grot rebels.

My army would include all the specialist troops and have a dark but not chaos appearance, with FW Heresy Armoured Vanguard and converting the Sanguinary Guard armour from angel to daemon. here’s a mock model of a basic assault marine I put together.

This is an idea that has been kicking around in my head ever since I played Republic commando, I mean there are few things more bad ass than an elite team of commandos wiping out a whole base. But short of Deathwing such elite armies would rarely work in the game, then the Tau Empire codex came out and I saw Farsight’s 8 battle suit unit and came up with a cooler looking and more practical ‘Battle Armour’ conversion. Think of it as an experimental highly advanced hybrid of both Stealthsuit and Battlesuit tech, notice the miniaturized missile pod.



The idea would be to equip and model everyone in Farsight unit to be a specialist so demo expert would have the failsafe and be modelled carrying charges while the medic would be modelled with medical equipment and have stim packs, etc. I can even use the leftover stealth suit torsos to create shield drones similar in appearance to the probes in Starcraft 2.



Adding up the price of everything I found out that this entire army would cost just over £100/$160 so it would be very cheap to create. I did have my doubts about it‘s effectiveness, that was till someone from my club built a Farsight list with 8 wound allocation bodyguard and 14 shield drones to chew through. It looks like a fun and challenging army to play and master and after seeing Iron Man 2 with the hammer drones and Halo Reach last year this idea had popped up again.

I’m currently listening to the Thousand Sons novel and they sound like the most interesting and tragic marine chapter ever and with both the tomb kings and grey knights coming out this year I have a recipe to create a pre-heresy army of elite Thousand Sons psykers, the scarab cult if I remember correctly.

Now I will have to wait till I see the grey knight codex before I can come up with any more ideas but I’m thinking of mixing the new grey knight parts with dark angel robes and tomb king bits with the maxmini steam punk helmets and then arm the model with a Egyptian like halberds and model a few casting energy bolts for the storm bolters etc.



It has a lot of potential; inquisitors can be scribes for instance and the grey knight’s use of runes and physic powers would suit the Thousand sons very well. With luck they’ll have a powerful Grey Knight character I can use as Magnus the red.

I will of course have to wait till the release of the grey knights and even the tomb kings but in that time I can either take a break from the hobby or work on the 2nd most popular army in this gets the most votes.

My vote is for: Yes.

I'm putting my vote with the Kroggs, because quite simply, I think it's unique, whereas I have seen both pre-heresy Night Lords and Thousand sons, though cool I've seen done before. I'd put the Tau Commando idea as a second because I think, again it's unique, looks interesting, but suffers from what I see as a single coloured army and being very small.

Just my thoughts, but good luck with whatever endevour you decide upon!

I have to agree with Oshunai, the uniqueness of the the Krogg concept elevates it above the others. Also the sources of inspiration are extensive. Components should be easily accessible from both Gw and third party producers to boot. All in all I think it has both the extent of material and a capability to readily produce good quantities of miniatures with sufficient variation to make it a winner.

Codex wise you could run the Krogg along the lines of the feral ork lists. Ideas for models, you could mix both the current ork range and miniatures from the Ogre Kingdoms range as well. I have seen it done before with impressive results, unfortunately I cannot remember the source. If I locate it I'll shoot you a PM with the info.

Well I voted for the 1k sons, but after thinking about it, I really like the Tau. I'm a big toss fan. All 4 of the ideas are freaking great though.

I voted for the Tau Commandos. I like the Thousand Sons too, but with most of the pieces to that project not yet released, I had to go for the Tau.

I went for the Krogg as I liked that concept when you first mentioned it, second would be a toss-up between the tau and night-lords.

My vote goes to the Thousands Sons as I'm a big fan of them.

I vote for the Tau commandos. That suit is just too cool not to do. Also as you said it is a cheap option so you HAVE to do it now

Tau need love, sure they gotta pay for it but your the kinda guy that can give the tau the proper kind of love that they should pay you for.

I know, which is quite annoying as I've just been told the 60 Pre-Heresy Night Lord shoulder pads I ordered have been cast!

Luckily there a chap at my club who had the exact same idea so I might be able to sell them to him or I may even come back to it in the near future, depends on my income and prices at the time. Besides I had my doubts about that army idea from the start and with 3 other project ideas that are much more interesting visually and fluffwise I kind of predicted this would happen.

Voted for the elite tau, simply because it is a very unique idea. I have always liked the tau but found them a bit weak. Now if you were to make covert tau capable of causing mass destruction to their enemies, well, it would be awesome!!!

As cool as the PH NL army would be, I think your other 3 awesome ideas blew it up...

I voted Tau commando army for one simple reason: I'd love to see what you'll be doing with the suits!

It was a tough choice between Night Lords and the Tau, but the Tau bribed me so what I could I do?

Well the positions so far is the Tau Kommandos in first, with Kroggs just recently claiming 2nd place with the Thousand Sons in 3rd. Looks like the Night Lords are out of this race.

Well with the clear winner being the Tau ‘Shadow Cadre’ I’ve been considering ideas one of which is the paint scheme. I want to make them look like an elite commando team but don’t want to use to dark colours in case people get confused. So far I’m considering a Grey colour scheme adding faded colour marks like the clone troopers from star wars to represent the different specialists in the team, or maybe a desert scheme like GDI from the C&C series?

The grey scheme looks nice. Failing that, arctic camo would allow for a lot of lighter colours. And if you're going clone wars Tau, go white

Now I'm trying to think of a cool elite team name that the Tau Empire will use, I was going to go with 'The Shadow Cadre' but given how I plan to paint them white that just won't suit them.
It's very difficult to come up with a title the Tau would name a commando unit when you have no existing names to refer to. Would they give them a nickname like 'The White Stars' or 'The Enlightened' or perhaps something more militarised like 'SWORD' (Strategic War Operations Response Division) or just ‘The Lightning Cadre’?

Help me out here guys?
