Subject: The Kroggs; Post Apocalyptic Themed Army

I’ve always been a fan of barbaric humans in Sci-fi films such as Mad Max, Serenity and Waterworld. I’ve been thinking of doing an army based on them for some time now. The guys in the sketches are the kind of look I'm going for.
I’ve looked at different armies to portray these characteristics with such as Chaos Berserkers and Orks, Guard are out the question as I want to break away from shooty based armies and combat is big no for guard especially in competitive games!
In the end I decided to go with Orks as they seem best suited for a barbaric civilization from a toxic industrial death world. Besides I already have a guard and chaos marine army anyway.
Here’s a small gang of them I made up for a Gorkamorka campaign just to get a good idea of what the full army might look like.
Plus the trukk & Ard Boy.
Here are my plans for other units in the army:
Here are a few plans I have for other models in my army. Now the Ork Warboss is too hard to be represented by a model the size of the Nob so I though about using the Forge World Berserker Orgyn as my Warboss he certainly looks the part. Just cut of the tip of the drill and replace it with the barrel of a shoota or a sentinel saw.

Thanks it's a habit of mine, I find it boring to build an army that will look exactly like one that could be on the other side of the board and it's a big univerise so there are no limits to my imagination.
Also for those of you curious on how big a Krogg is here's a ref...
One of the biggest problems I'm having at the moment with these guys are pistols; though there only used once or twice in game before they leap into combat I need to represent them on the model.
Ork's weapons are too big as you can see from the krogg on the right in the attached pic.
The old necromunda weapons sprues would have been perfect but I can't get them anymore, so does anyone know where I can get some good pistols for the Krogg Warriors?
If I can't find any suitable pistols I'll have to try one of the following...
- Have a few Kroggs in the unit armed with small firearms (like the one on the left)
- Have each Krogg armed with a throwing weapon such as a knife or axe.
- Arm a few kroggs with the pistols from the grot boxed set (but I can only afford to arm 20 out of 80)

This looks very cool, excellent idea. I forsee more awesomeness in this thread.
I found cutting down a lasgun and sticking a bit of tube on the end was reasonable, it's such a quick job that it should be easy to make a batch, then do some variations - plasticard on the side, differing mags etc.
However may not be as crude as you want, but figure with a variety of these, a few scratch-built, some other (better) conversion you think of, a few grot pistols and a few oversized holsters it may work.
Can't wait to see more of this

My vote would be a throwing weapon for every one and a handful of proper pistols.
If someone doesn't like it say there all lethal at knife/ax throwing at still targets, but there are few static targets on the battle field so thus have problems hitting their targets. That should fit ork BS 2 and slugga S4 AP6.

Very nice start, will follow this closely to loot some ideas. Consider the pig-iron heads looted, how to find fitting heads has been one of my major headaches.
There are many sites that sell different kinds of weapon sprues: heresy, assault group, hasslefree.

This is frickin' sweet. Props to you sir...props to you. Wow, so i was playing Borderlands and this is SPOT ON, there are even big mutants for bosses like your doing, inspiration cue your using? Would love to see this the progress on this and the completed army. The Necromunda Goliaths might fit in as they have stubguns that are more proportioned. I don't know if they look right but with your apparent skill you could grunge them up just fine.

Now every army needs a leader and this being a army of barbaric humans they would need someone really hardcore to lead them.
Here is a model I created for an old chaos army to be a terminator champion, he's a huge miniature and looks like he could smash his way through a squad of marines without a sweat. Of course I'd model some slaves carrying his big shoota and banner.
So what do you guys think? He looks just right to be a suitable model to represent human version of Ghazghkull Thraka?

Cool model, suitably bad-ass, but I'm not convinced it beats the converted ogryn for a wasteland/barbaric feel. Just a touch too armoured perhaps? Obviously the paint job would make a huge difference but I'm feeling the ogryn a bit more at the moment.
But that could just be 'coz I wanna see wot you does wit da big 'urty fella

monkeytroll wrote:but I'm not convinced it beats the converted ogryn for a wasteland/barbaric feel. Just a touch too armoured perhaps?
He's the leader and thraka has a 2+ armour save. Besides the Ogryn doesn't exactly look like the leader type. Instead I plan to chain the orgyn to a wartrakk facing backwards with the biker at the back. The idea is he'll drive the brutal killing machine to a target and unleash it and once everything's dead call him back to the trakk and move on to the next target.
Vlad Von Carstien wrote:I like the idea of the army and the chaos guy is cool but I think he needs a little something to be Gazakull.
What could he possibly need? He nearly twice the size of a marine and very menacing and I can't give him any backpacks or banners due to the cape. (Also remember he'll be painted like the rest soon enough)

This project is made of win and awesomeness.
I salute the 'Mad Max' feel you recreated with these guys. Brilliant mix of barbarity and tech, just what you need for wasteland raider themed army.
I'm pondering if I should advise you to use SW heads and Catachan legs/torsos. They'd fit greatly but probably would make the army look less barbaric and more of generic punks/bikers. What I see now is totally 'human orks'. Much like good old diggas, which fits MM style nice.

Really enjoying what you've come up with here...
I think the counts-as Thraka will look great with new paint and a couple of smallish thugs carrying the rest of his gear (big shoota etc.). Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I think Ghazzy comes with a stikk bomb launcha, so putting a couple of stikk bombs on his belt might add another touch of mad-max style to the figure.
As for the earlier question about thoughts on guns... Not really sure what a good source would be (maybe empire free company), but I could actually see these guys carrying flint-lock type pistols. There's something about a belt full of single shot pistols that screams human-orks to me... they're simple, relatively inaccurate and inefficient.
Whatever you decide, I can't wait to see what's next.

Ohh, a Facepalm smiley, I didn't know that one yet.

The model seems to perfect for a count-as Ghazghkull Thraka due to the similar size and that both use power fists as weapons.
