Commissar Aggro: Sanity is for the weak!
Archibald Jack: Thanks! The tourney was a lot of fun, I placed 13th out of 44 or so contestants, and most importantly I had a great time! You can read a report in the batrep section if you're interested.
Blitza da warboy: probably not, since I don't really see them as going together well with burnagrots. If their ride gets immoblized a lot, I might add one, but otherwise it'll be just burnagrots!
I did some more work on a new kommissar today. For this one, wanted to see if I could make a grot into a heroic-looking, inspirational leader. Here's my first attempt, still very WIP:
The barrel was added for some height and to make him look more important. There will be a squig hound by his side as well, but it is being kept separate for painting and modeling shenanigans.
Also, my store is having a bitz trade day next Saturday, but I just couldn’t wait: I wanted to finish off my 4th burnagrot, so I messed around with the bits I still had in order to cook up a burna and a cc weapon. I’m also out of plastic rod, so the next one is definitely on hold till I get to the modeling shop! Anyway, here are the pics:
I tried to give this one a gas mask, and I’m a bit on the fence on this one; it didn’t work out as I was hoping, so I’m debating tearing off this one’s head and starting over. I also made his feet tapered. The claws were OK, but this is closer to my original idea and the way I had visualized them. I doubled the plasticard thickness as well, making them look a tad sturdier.
Let me know what you guys think!

Son of a this is a nice looking army. The Grot Kommissar is absolutly ace (beatiful work! ). Great, great job Commissar! Can't wait to see everything painted .

awww no grot meks
the commisar loos more crazy with power with those huge eyes, than sane (but thats just what a human commissair is! (hehehe)
for the burna, it looks a helluva lot more complicated than the other ones, but the problem with the gas mask for me is those huge round eyes. maybe take it out, paint it, and see if it looks better?

Da kommigrot's very inspiring!!!!
I love it!
As for the burna, do you intend on using it as burnaboy "rulewise"? It seems a bit too mechanized to me, but he'd fit perfectly as a MegaNob or something!!
Great work anyway!!!

Karmine: Thanks!
Blitza da warboy: I've got a grot big mek . Adding a mek to a burna boy unit just doesn't seem all that interesting right now. If I felt he would add somethign to the unit: yes. Till then... I agree on the gas mask, and I'm going to take the head off and find a new one. I guess a gas mask will have to wait for a bit...
Dysartes: Thanks! And only 11 more of the burnagrots to do.. lol. At least, once I have 5 they're a legal unit
Yggdrasil: Thank you! The burnagrot will be a burnaboy rulez wise, I'll just argue the suit adds stats the same way a bike.Tau battle suit does. For the meganobs, I already have an idea, and this guy doesn't really look armoured enough to me to warrant a 2+ save.
Young_Logan: zero . I'll push one up the paint scheme, but right now I'm finishing off a killa kan.
Llamahead: Yep, that's the look I was going for . I'll have to give him some evil-sounding German-inspired name. Landa might be an option
Br4inworks: Thanks!

Just looking through some warhammer models and a (simple) idea hit me.
If i was to do a reble grot army I would definitely have a goblin shamen stand in as a reble grot weirdboy. What do you think?
Simple but bet it works no questions.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Commissar Agro: The cigar finishes it off . The burna head is gone btw, replaced with a new attempt at a gasmask. Sadly, the camera's battery is down so no burnagrot piccies today. On the bright side, I did take some killa kan pics before it died on me
Arakasi: Glad you like him! As for the cloak: I roll out a bit of greenstuff, let it cure for 10 mins, then cut out a basic trapezium shape. I drape it around the model and make cuts near the arms so the coat fits the sides snugly. After that, it's a matter of making the coat flow naturally, cutting off excess greenstuff and closing the sleeves. Finally I'll smoothen it with a modelling tool to remove fingerprints. Then for the most important bit: resist tampering with it till the gs is dry, or you'll mess up the fold on the model! If you want, I can try to do stage-by stage on the next one. The toes on the last burna are what I was aiming for, basically, so the other guys will have their toes done the same way - thanks for the support on this!
alexwars1: Thanks!
ceorron: if you 40K-ify the staff and the model, it might work. I'm a bit loathe to do it since you'll still be using a grot to represent an ork, something I've tried to avoid in this army to prevent confusion. If you were using guard rules however, it wouldn't be that much of a problem. Give it a go and build a grot army - you know you want to!
So, like I said above, killa kan pics. Nothing too spectacular, but I figure seeing 6 of these and 1-2 dreads coming your way should be quite discomforting. These guys will get green graffiti, the others blue to differentiate them.
Piccies:
I wanted to keep the atavistic theme I started with the battlewagon, so I made the teeth bone-coloured, and painted the 'eye' red. The teeth also break up the orange a bit.
The kommissar and the burnagrot had some more work done to them, but sadly the camera's battery died on me, so no pics of those today-tune in tomorrow for another fix!

Karmine: Glad you like him
Rose_Mountainz: Thanks . This bit isn't quite where I want it to be (more of a transition between acts, really) , but since you insist: fluff bit at bottom of post!
elite-gannux: Thank you!
Arakasi: I'll try and remember to do a step-by-step on my next kommissar! And glad you like the killa kan!
So, some pics of the finished kommissar. I added frills to the shoulders, a belt to break up the large flat coat, and also added some gubbins to the grabba stick:
And the burna grot, which just shows that my sculpting skills aren't all that yet; it's better then the first one though; I gave thima new gasmask, but I still don't like it, so I'll probably be ripping it's head off (again) and give him a more regular one.
And, finally, especially for Rose_Mountainz, a bit more fluff:
The grots had been down for two months. In that time, they had created an impressive village, bringing in the grots they liked from above. There had been junk in da hallz that they’d used for improvised huts and improvised weapons, but here there was lots more! Gitskag had discovered a natural aptitude with the junk, messing around with the heat from the lava to bend stuff, creating better huts. They had also put up a solid door at the entrance, to keep out bugs and “da fog”. It had worked so far. At the rate grots spawned spores, the village was growing prodigiously. The Enemy hadn’t noticed the small group disappearing, and they were safe here. The cave had it’ s own population of critters: squighounds and –spiders, even winged squigs! It was clear that the squig population had found this safe abode long before the grots had; they fed off the strange mushrooms that grew in the light of the lava - and each other. The mushrooms were edible for the grots as well – some of them anyway. Squealy still wasn’t the grot he used to be, left a bit unhinged after the visions one particularly large, purple-striped mushroom had given him. The five original grots had each specialized, and formed the leaders of the village: Scrazza had taken up the defenses and the hunting, Gitskag had discovered his technical abilities, Squealy had an affinity with mushrooms and other grots. Gutrag proved a decent enough doctor, able to stitch together the grots that were bitten by squig hounds or had gashes from the sharp metal that lay scattered around the cave. Some mushrooms even treated burn wounds! Scrabz had taken to the caves, exploring further and further with the help of other, like-minded grots.
A loud crack sounded in the subterranean village, followed by a roaring sound. Smoke emerged from Gitskag’s workshop. As the grots rushed to see what had happened –no grot ever passed on any kind of spectacle- they saw Gitskag standing on some strange contraption. And it moved! The little grot had managed to scavenge some track units from discarded servitors, and together with Squealy, had created a primitive fuel from squig-oil and fungus. He revved the engine, and sped the track unit around the village. It satisfied a need that was bred into every greenskin: loud noise, speed, and the jealousy of his peers. The crash when one of the tracks let loose, satisfied that other need that was bred into every greenskin: a malicious pleasure in the pain and misfortune of others.
Once properly fixed, the track unit had proven useful, and it was used to drag larger amounts of metal from the scrap heaps to the village. The grots had used the existing walkways to create a make-shift bridge, allowing quick transportation from one side of the lava flow to the other. They had built a few more track units as well, using them for construction, racing around, and general mayhem and destruction. Thanks to an old pressure tank, they’d even made harpoons and other weapons, making the hunting a lot easier. The compressed air meant they were low on ammo, but it sure beat trying to catch a squighound with a spear. Some of the gases that escaped were highly flammable: Gitskag immediately realised it’s potential, and going by a memory from something he had never seen, built a burna. Welding overtook riveting, and soon Gitskag had a few apprentices. Then, the cave-in happened.
++++++++++++++++++++
It was Scrabz who came rushing in first, using one of the tracks. “Cave-in! There’s lotsa junk that came through the ceiling! Oh, and Grabby’ s underneath!” As the grots went to investigate, they definitely found lots of junk: an old digging machine must have malfunctioned and burrowed straight down, coming out in an old passageway a few miles from the cave.
The machine has crushed the unfortunate Grabby’s legs, who was screaming as a few other grots were trying to drag him out from underneath the rubble. Gutrag would have his work fixing that up…
More interestingly, the machine had revealed a new tunnel. One leading up! Scrabz immediately took a party up, exploring the newly created passageway. The grots were excited, chattering about the discovery and al the things they would find higher up. The hush from Scrabz sobered them up though: “Shush! Movement up ahead!” The grots had learned to rely on Scrabz’ instincts: he was always right, and he had an uncanny sense of direction in the tunnels. The small party spread out, weapons at the ready.

Amazing stuff. I really look forward to seeing the finished army.
Some ideas for consideration:
You should take an ork and have him strapped down to the front of your wagon, the same way deer hunters rope down a deer to the front of their car. After all, they should have a prize to show off!
You could also take ork weapons (or other army weapons) and have them displayed as trophies.
Are Grots considered a fungus like Orks? If so, some suggestions for graffiti are:

EagleArk: I'm working up to it, if you read closely you'll see there's bits getting tied in here and there. A few more bits and things will become clearer, I promise!
Rose_Mountainz: Got your fix?
ghosty: a bit sooner, but that's the general idea, yes . I kinda like the leader as well, who would've thought grots would be good for heroic poses?
Yggdrasil: Thanks! I'll try and write some more fluff later on, right now I'm more in a modelling mood.
Heffling: Thanks! As for the ork being tied up, someone (I believe Dysartes) suggested I should model an ork getting sucked into a shokk attack gun - I'll have this idea join his, I'll see if I get around to doing it . The trophies thing... I don't know, maybe on the warboss . And the "fungus among us" is so gonna get graffiti-ed on a bit of terrain
Pvt. Jet: Thanks. I'm building a warboss stand-in based on a biggerized megagrot (pics earle rin the thread), and earlier in the thread you can find my big mek stand-in, Mastablasta:
-=Scar=- : Thanks!
Now, onto some new models:
I finally finished my 5th burnagrot, giving me a legal, (if somewhat small) unit. We had a bits swap day this Saturday, and I got hold of plenty of burnas (thanks to my friends at the FLGS ), so there's no reason not to build them up to 15 . I figure 10 is more or less the minimum for them to be effective anyway, so I'm halfway to that mark at least
Piccies of the burnagrot:
I feel like I've got the proportions rihgt on this one, so he'll serve as the blueprint for the others.
I've also started work on converting another runtherd and 10 grots to join him. I wanted to do a step by step of the coat for Arakasi, but my wife had taken the memory card out of the machine, so the first steps aren't pictured. Still, plent ymore kommissars to come . Here's where he stands now:
What I basically did was cut out a trapezium shape about the height of a grot, make the bottom rounded, then drape it around the model. Then, you make cuts near the arms to make it fit, and remove a small triangle of gs near the shoulders so it fits around and you can fashion it into a coat instead of a cape. Then, it's time to add shape to the coat and let it dry . He's based on an IG commissar for pose, but it'll become clearer one I add his other arm.
And, last but not least: 10 more grots to go with the new kommissar, all converted to some degree to make sure I won't be having identical minis:
The main problem here are the single-piece models: with the others, I could always cheat and add a different head, but on the one-piece models, it's major cutting time! Still I felt the challenge was met appropriately, but I'll let the good dakka folks be the judge of that.

Rose_mountainz: he's one of my favourite as well. I might have to paint the glasses hippy pink . Right now, I have 46 assembled grots and 3.5 runtherds, of which 18 are painted, 17 are WIP and 11 are just plain grey. At least a third of the assembling is done...
Blitza da warboy: Glad you like'em . I wanted to mess around with their weapons a bit to make them more individual, and to a grot, anything is a heavy weapon . As for the big mek's weaponry: he just has a slugga, since he also has a KFF and I don't want a 2W model frying himself...
The BlackVanguard: Thank you and sweet dreams! If you're ever in Belgium, drop by for a game!
EagleArk: thanks!
So, some more progress on the kommissar, and I've also made a start on the warboss, since I felt I needed a troops choice that could actgually go and take objectives
First, the kommissar, who got a second arm and some sleeves:
As you can (hopefully) make out, his pose is based on an IG commissar
Now, onto the piece de résistance: the WIP warboss! He's far from finished, but this should give you guys a good idea opf where I'm going with him. I want him to be wearing mega-armour, so a Tau stealth suit was a logical start. I biggerized the legs, making him a lot taller, adn cut up two suits to give him two big arms. I also added additional joints to his power klaw, to make it look as if he's pointing. Here's the pics, let me know what you think!
He still needs some gap filling and detailing, and a head obviously . the head will be converted to make him look like he has bionics, with a replacement skull so I can count him as Ghazkull if I feel the need. Ghazzy the Grot

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Rose_mountainz: Pics coming up! Once he's finished, I'll do a scale shot so you can truly appreciate the height difference - he's about as tall as a killa kan
Blitza da warboy: Thanks! The scenic bit comes from the IG vehicle accessory sprue, it's a bit of stowage (two backpacks with a lasgun) that I tossed on the base to give him some height.
Arakasi: I spent extra attention on his feet .
Here's some better close-ups of the klaw:
Still WIP mind, only the basic shape is there. I still need to add some gubbins and some more worky bits. What's making this PK look different is the fact that two of the 'fingers' have joints. What do youy guys think is odd about it?

Great job all around! The new Kommisar looks ace and the paintjob on the kan looks really good.

Solorg: Thank you! If you liked the wartrakk conversion, how do you feel about the second wartrakk and my pride and joy, the legged battlewagon (p.8 or so)? If you want an army shot, there's a few on page 9 of the thread; I haven't added all that much since then.
Rose_Mountainz: Thanks! The PK is the first time I added smaller pistons on a model, and it came out quite right; expect to see more pistons in the future . The coat is all about practice really; it's my 4th coat already, so I'm more or less getting the hang of it. I'll be making plenty more coats soon(ish), since I got my goblin general heads from micro-art studios, so I have 5 kommissar heads waiting for a body.
Anung Un Rama: thanks . Glad someone likes the orange at least . I paid extra attention to the warboss' feet, and I guess it payed off. Of course, having dread feet bits lying around help out a lot as well .
the shooter could look a bit more impressive imo.
You do realize it's a biggerized dread big shoota now, do you? I think it looks a tad small because the warboss is pretty huge; I've taken a few scale pics which will hopefully convince you!
As for the winged squigs: they would become stormboyz if I ever decide to use them, so that's a very far away project. But since they're pretty garbage now, they'll probably rock in the next codex . You can find deffkoptas in the first few pages, but they're just basic deffkoptas with booster seats, basically. I'm working on amore interesting deffkopta right now, I'll put up some pics once it's worth showing.
alexwars1: Thanks! And: I never get tired of that . Guess I'll have to keep my standards this high now
Now, some scale pics and a better view of the warboss' shoota:

The new guys look great. The warboss is just the right size to not get jeloius of the bigmek's "ride", while not totally overshadowing the bigmek that made it.
The pose on the new commissar is choice!
One thing, though- the boss' pointin' finger looks a little hyper extended, like the piston would pull it the wrong way.

The Good Green: thanks! I agree about the size bit, they're both 'big' but differrently so: the orgryn's girth is huge, and the warboss.. is just huge, as it should be. I think he's bigger then Thraka . I've also taken up the plan to base a few kommissars on their IG counterparts, so expect one waving a book as well . I agree about the pointing finger, it's been fixed by lowering the piston a bit:
Finch Claw: Thank you!
Archibald Jack: glad you like'em . My chances for an embolism are slowly being reduced. I find experience helps a lot here; it's still fiddly, but I'm getting the hang of it. I'm still no more then a gifted amateur though; check out jamsessionein's work for some truly splendid (and humbling) plasticard work.
Commissar Agro: Guess that means you like it?
As promised a few posts higher up, here's a new deffkopta I'm working on. I've decided that buzzsaws are a splendid if somewhat expensive AT option, so it's convertin' time! Still VERY WIP, I've only done basic dremelling work and I've added the chainsaw 'mouth' to the kopta. Now it's gs work and adding small wings to attach rokkits to; a friend of mine kindly donated some rokkit packs, so those will be a good start. I intend to continue the atavistic theme on this one, so I'll try and model it a bit more like a head with teeth. For those wondering: the buzzsaw is basically two killa kan klaws stuck together with some minor cutting and some plastic tubing added. Of course, the rokkits had to be removed first but that's just basic kuttin'.
Now, piccie:

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Rose_Mountainz: I'll be magnetizing the weapons to keep my options open. 70 point si a lot for a 2W modle IMO, but the destructive potential is simply huge. Also, the rokkits do seem a lot more effective then the big shoota.
Arakasi: here's a few more pics! I've also started assembling a dual deffkopta, but pics will hav to wait till I have something more advanced to show
Commissar AGro: Thanks. And: figured that much Glad you like'em!
Finch Claw: thank you!
shas'o vera: now I'll have to give him scrawny front legs!
Here's few more progress pics, basic gs work done and the wings added. I've also experimented a bit with a rokkit pack to represent the twin-lonked rokkits, and I feel a set of rokkits on each side should do fine. The gs near the feed will need some tidying up to make a proper foothold, but I need the base layer to dry first. A test fit showed the wing won't be in the way of the foot, so that's all dandy

I can't imagine how that would look if he actually used that buzzsaw on a regular tank. Though the though of him using it against something with wings cracks me up.

Are you going to do any more work on the wing? (It looks a little plain... Hmmm, that was an unintentional play on words...)
Do you find the buzzsaw to be a bit overwhelming on the model? I'm trying all of the various Nobz, Kans and Deff Dreads klaws on mine and it is ruining the balance!
Keep up the good work!

I love that you've increased the pitch of the rotor blades.
It's a small detail I know, but I love small details. They really do turn a good model into a great model. Kudos!
Also, the wing mounted rockets are a great touch, gives a very 'Apache' feel. I might have to do a little Deathskull R&D on that idea...

yeah,
Nice copter, it will look awesome in a squadron!
I like the buzz blades. nice use of the kan bits.
70pts will be a bargin once you start boosting around the back of 200pt tanks... plus the disruption threat of a copter attack will mean that the enemy changes his plans and moves tanks instead of firing etc... I've found my buggies divert the enemies attention alot and i think copters will do the same thing.
teek:I always look at the roter blades, and think that because of the 'stabby bits' it looks like its going the wrong way!

First, let me say that I am not usually a fan of Ork conversions. I don’t know what it is, but most people make them look sloppy just for the sake of being sloppy. So when I say that this project is truly amazing, you know what I really mean. The work put in to make these little grotts look like an actual menacing is incredible. I am looking forward to what comes next.

Of course it's sloppy. IT'S ORKS!!!! Sloppy is a way of life for us.
Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe that's why I play Orks. My modeling/painting skills are about the equivalent of a 4 year old. But in an Ork world, it's good 'nuff.
But I must admit, the OP's conversions are far better than anything I could ever hope to do. Good work there!!!!

WARBOSS TZOO: goggles: check; leather cap: check; scarf: no room on the mini. Maybe the next one
Linked: the one with the cigar has a few coats of paint on him, the one with the swagger stick is still plain grey; I'm painting a new Russ for my FLGS, so that's eating up quite some painting time right now.
Anung Un Rama: Hmm good point; maybe I should add rokkit boosters? And the airwolf tune?
Arakasi: the wings had some rivets added and I'll be adding some more detailing, but the battery of my camera died; pics will be up tomorrow! As for the buzzswaw... It definitely changes the visual 'point of gravity' of the model; I find it's OK like this because the focus is supposed to be on the chainsaw 'head' anyway. I agree that it's hard to get it to look good, though I have the advantage that I'm not modifying an existing model though, so I'm less bound by what's been done before.
CrazyThang: Thanks! kopta will be finished within a few days, but it's pretty hectic at work right now.
Teek: That's the advantage of taking your time with models: I was messing around a bit and preferred the blades that way. I'll mess around a bit more for the final pose. For the apache feel, check out Arakasi's deffkopta (link in his sig, a few posts above yours), it was his idea first and I looted it like a proper grot
Panic: Thanks! I agree with you that the kopta will be splendid for hunting tanks, it's just that 70 points seems a lot. Still, I'm sure they'll do their job admirably! My only concern is that they lack the survivability (and firepower) of a buggy squadron. Firepower means less if you have a bunch of S7 attacks on the charge though
jackanory: there's only room for one I'm afraid, I'll be adding a few more on my dual kopta - if I ever get to work some more on it. Post up pics if you can, I'm always interested in other people's take on the little'uns!
SkeTcHy LaRRy: Quite the compliment, thanks a lot! I think people tend to reason from a basic ork's viewpoint, while I feel you should take the mekboy's view, i.e. how can I improve on something good? I have to admit I find the whole concept of grots ad an actual menace highly entertaining, I can't wait to stomp an ork player with my grots
Madmax1: Orks = sloppy; grots= skillz! Thanks btw
No piccies today since the camera's battery is dead, but I've written a bit more fiction to go with the Squeaky Waaagh!!!! Enjoy!

The grot tunnel party crept upward in the newly excavated – or collapsed- tunnel. As they moved up, rough, shouting voices echoed down, their owners clearly oblivious to the approaching gretchin. “M ichaels! What happened?” A second voice answered, nearer to the grots. “T hose bloody servitors! I ordered them to control the rockdrill, and they didn’t register properly! Ogryn servitors are even dumber then regular ones!” “Dumber then regular ogryn or dumber then regular servitors?” The raucous laughter echoed down the tunnel, the grots stealthily approaching. They had been trained quite thoroughly while exploring the cave system, the reckless and the dumb weeded out by accidents, squighounds, or worse. They approached to within 20 feet of the two talking miners, getting a view none of them had experienced firsthand: a human face.
The two miners, having decided that the accident was clearly the servitors failure, were now venting their anger on them. They yelled at them and hit them, but the ogryn servitors barely registered it. Either of the two servitors could have crushed the miners easily, their already formidable ogryn physique boosted by augmetics and mining equipment. One of the ogryn, equipped with a huge drill, simply responded to the punches and insults with a monotonous “ Do not compute. Please formulate your request per regular commands or memory-upload”. The second one, a lobotomised giant with gigantic shears, didn’t even respond at all, seemingly gone dormant, ignoring the abuse and the kicks and the hits with the shovels. This only served to infuriate the miners further, who felt they were being mocked by the lack of response.
It slowly downed on Scrabz and as he looked to the others, he knew they had come to the same conclusion: these were the Enemy! They were clearly kicking their slaves without reason, and they were outside the safe zones the grots had created. They instantly realized that they couldn’t allow them to find out about the grot settlement. Besides, there were only two of the Enemy and ten of them. The Enemy were too busy hurting their slaves and too secure in their feeling of superiority to look around for danger. And, most importantly, they had their backs towards the grots.
Speedily, stealthily, the grots approached. Scrabz divided them up, 5 grots on each Enemy, making sure both had pressure guns at the ready. One of the servitors noticed them, but the data was irrelevant, their programming not advanced enough. Ogryn servitors were used for brute force only, and didn’t get anything but the necessary modifications – and lobotomy.
As one the grots struck. The leftmost miner never saw his killers, dying to a speargun that pierced his miner’s helmet like it was paper; the metal spike continued straight through, coming out the other side of the helmet and embedding itself in the rock. The second minder, reacting on instinct, managed to dodge the first spear, but was then netted and impaled by the grots, who showed no mercy to what was, in their mind, an enemy that had taken so many of them. The two servitors didn’t move a muscle. Servitor BGLG-15-A was splattered with the lifeblood of the first miner, the bloodshed activating long forgotten memories of hunting and fighting, and eating. His mechanical part took over quickly though, suppressing the memory.
“ Now what?” asked one of the hunting party. “ We hide the bodies, and liberate dem slaves! Hurry, before there’s more of’em!” Skrabz immediately made for one of the servitors, urging on the others to pick up the corpses and hide their tracks. “ Oi! Ya big lug! Get movin’ before their buddies get ‘ere!” The servitor looked down “ Do not compute. Please formulate your request per regular commands or memory-upload”. The grot was astonished. Did the big guy really not understand? Maybe he didn’t know the way? “C ome with me!” “ Affirmative” The ogryn took up position behind Skrabz, and followed him around. Scragnutz, a quick learner, did the same with the shears-armed servitor. Excited and awed, the grot party made off into the darkness, only the blood spatters and the metal spike embedded in the rock a proof of the slaughter that had taken place.

EagleArk: Glad you like it . I don't have any new fluff ready, that's reserved for when I can't model. No worries though, the story will continue!
Here's a few more pics of my (nearly) finished deffkopta. I need to remove some mould lines and drill out the exhauts, but that's about it. For this pilot, I cut the top off an ork deffkopta pilot's head so I had goggles and the flying cap, then gsed it to a goblin face. I then glued it in place before taking pics (lackofpatience might be a better nickname , so you'll have to do with these:
And a rear view, showing off the improved exhausts and the rokkit engine
So, what do you guys think? Does he need anything else?

On the most recent pics in looks like the leading edge of the rotors (ie. the lifted edge) doesn't face in the same direction for each blade...? I could be wrong though. Similarly with the spikes on the rotor blade, personally I'd have them all face backwards because my instincts on fluid dynamics prefers them there - but that's really, really pernickety on my part.
Also, your work is fething awesome. The first time I saw the bright orange paintwork I thought it would look hideous en-mass but you've proven me completely wrong. First class conversions AND good paintwork.

These are awesome, and so original! I really like the fluff too. Definitely subbed

Post by: Arakasi
The blades are indeed the "wrong" (well, for a given definition of "wrong") way - you can tell because all the "teeth" should face the same direction - or alternatively, two smooth edges shouldn't be seen together as in the pic. Still - its Grotz, whose contraptions, like Orks, don't necessarily rely on reality to work. I prefer it the "right" way. Do it whatever way pleases you!
Rivets! They look good, very solid and chunky. I think my Deffkopta is missing rivets...
Given the Buzzsaw on the front further elongates the model, I'm glad you copied my wingz - otherwise it would look even more two dimensional than the original!
Overall - excellent. I look forward to turning it back into the scrap metal it really is at some time in the future

WARBOSS TZOO: It'll be ahrd to do the detailing, but I found with my previous deffkoptas that is was very hard to get the model in a proper position, so I decided to try it like this; painting should be OK, I have quite a few angles still open to me when it comes to painting. And if you can't reach it, you can't see it
The Good Green: they're the ork's ears, and the rest is covered up by the flying bits of leather cap . Glad you like the fluff, and looking forward to the unfurling events in Bigtoof!
Young_Logan: thanks! Mad mek creation will be up shortly (I hope)!
Atre: Thank you! the orange paintjob was a bit of a gamble, bit I like the final result; I think the trick was to make it a dirty, earthy orange.
As for the rotor blades: you're absolutely right. I only glue them on after painting, so I quickly took two rotor bits and tossed them on for the pics, not realizing they were on the wrong way. Nice eye for detail! No need to worry though, they'll be facing in the 'proper' direction once properly attached
Scarper: thank you, glad you like'em!
Arakasi: see the comment above about the rotor blades . The rivets are essential with the way I built the the wings, they'd be a bit plain otherwise. They're easy to make too, just slicing bits off a plastic rod.
I agree about the two-dimensionality of the regular deffkopta - it's fine for bikes, but less so for an attack copter. I think you could make a cool akira-type bike out of'em. I like the elongated look the buzzsaw gives the model, it looks a tad more aerodynamic and sleeker. Adding some more exhausts and the 'afterburna' just adds to that feel.
Glad you like the model - not entirely amazing though since I stole your design . As for the battle: Viva la Revolucion!

Post by: Heffling
Khaine,
A thought for a future Kopta design: Why have the Grot sitting down? You could easily have him standing on the seat, or even on the seat back, while holding onto the handle bars. You'd just have to tilt his head to look "up".
Alternatively, to keep the feet from looking like they are just "hanging in the air" (pun not intended), you could build up some pistons that go down to where you would normally expect to have the pedals. You could even do something like make some bricks to have tied to the gobbo's feet to help him reach the pedals. =-)
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
vinbreau: one ork player to another? . Glad you like'em, and make sure to put up pics if customize your models!
Heffling: actually, there's not that much room between the rotor engine and the seat, so having a grot stand up is pretty much impossible. The same with having him lie down: I think he'd only see his gas tank then. Nice ideas though! The best alternative I've come up with so far is to 'box' the legs in and just use an upper torso, representing the pilot being strapped in securely - well, securely for greenskins . Building up stuff to the pedals could work, I've considered adding books underneath their feet; main problem is that removing the ork legs is not a pretty sight, so it would imply extensive rebuilding. That's what's held me off so far, but maybe I should give it a go on the next one.
Anyway, minor update: 10 more basic grots, who are now in need of a kommissar, so that's next on the drawing board
I've tried to add some different weapons to change their profiles (hence the sniper rifle and the submachine guns), and I've cut up a few models that come with their gun attached to their chest; it's actually easier then it looks, you just have to be careful and place your cut right.

Love'in da Grotz! Everytime I look at the Grot sprue it baffles me as to how to make lots of unique grotz without buying the "collectors" metals and FW ones - but you sir are showing that, with some imagination, no such limitation exists! I want to, eventually, add Grotz as wound markers for my Ork characters and Nobz - made out like Watchas (ie wrapped in robes, carry'in stuff). I will definately be revisiting this thread when I get to that...

Dysartes wrote:Nice work on the weapon swaps, CK, though I'm a little confused by the Grots wielding grenade launchers in one hand.....
I'm not entirely up on how grenade launchers work, but rocket launchers, or at least the ones we have here on earth, don't have any recoil. All the force that would normally kick the gun is shot out through the rear.
So basically I like that potentially the only impediment to grots dual wielding grenade launchers is being able to carry them.

WARBOSS TZOO wrote:I'm not entirely up on how grenade launchers work, but rocket launchers, or at least the ones we have here on earth, don't have any recoil. All the force that would normally kick the gun is shot out through the rear.
Erh... That's pretty good in theory... But IRL, only MOST of the recoil is made up for by the backwards flame... I can only tell by my short experience as a soldier, but I did fire a rocket launcher once a few years ago, and I can tell it DOES have recoil!!!
Maybe in the grim darkness of the 41st millenium, Emperor knows, the AdMech has found a solution to totally offset the recoil??
Still, the model w/ drum shoota looks good to me!!

Shhh, stop getting in the way of dual automatic grenade launcher wielding grots.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Commissar Agro: Thanks, the spear gun idea came from the fluff, actually. Just shows the interaction between two creative processes
Dysartes: Thanks, and the grenade launchers are just really big sluggas to the grots . I imagine they found a few without ammo, and made their own ammo for them. And don't forget these are rebel grots, they can do all kinds of cool stuff
Arakasi: Thank you! You can actually make quite a few unique grots just by using the different heads. I did that on a few, but then decided I might as well go all they way. Also, if I'm out of ideas by grot 100 or so, I can still fall back on te basic head swaps . I'll be looking forward to the watchas!
WARBOSS TZOO: just sluggas mate . The day the codex supports it, I'll gladly give them grenade launchers! . Hmm, now I'm stuck with the idea of a dual nade launcher wielding grot in my head...
Yggdrasil: drum shoota = win IMO, the fact that it's a grenade launcher is just gravy!
Anyway, here's something new: a supadeffkopta! I had two koptas still lying around, and figured I might as well go all they way for my second buzzsawkopta. I started by adding the two bodies of the kopta together, making a nice big hull for the grots to mess around on. At first I was going to do a single rotor in the center, but it just didn't look right, so I came up with this:
I didn't attach the rotor blades yet because the gs is still curing, but I felt like I wanted some feedback on this guy; the gs willl need to be tiedied up as well, but it's in easy-to-reach places for a modelling knife, so no worries there. It's just the basic structure, but I've got a few questions for dakka:
1) do you guys like the buzzsaw arm?
2) Do you think the dual rotor design will look OK once proper cabling etc. is attached
3) Wheels or skids for the rear landing gear? I'm inclined to go wheels, but that doens't mean I can't change my opinion if I get good arguments
So, let me know what you think?
25539
Post by: EagleArk
I lol`ed...
If you attually want some feedback i would say it looks abit frontheavy and too long, merge the two seats together as it were... more compact.

I love it as it is xD maybe add some tubing and cables to hold it togheter, it's simply so orky (or groty?) it can be!

Post by: Arakasi
I think the Buzzsaw is fine. Unlike most Deffkoptas I see - I like the front profile (which almost looks hornet like), but not the side profile. It does just seem a bit long - reminds me of those two seater bicycles. How are you planning to have it actually balance? If I did a Grot Deffkopta (and it would have two "pilots") - I was planning to put the seats one in front and slightly below the other (then again, I have a fixation with Apaches it seems...) - but I don't think the Buzzsaw would work with that... Or you could double width the Deffkopta perhaps. With what you have, I'd just chop the back one off - but that's me. I wait with anticipation - you've managed to turn my opinion around before
29027
Post by: Heffling
I would drop the back half of the model and have it stop just behind the twin rotors. I TOTALLY love the twin rotor design, and if you don't mind, I'm going to spend some money on eBay and buy up a set of AoBR Kopta's to convert (Do you convert? No No No No!)
The wings you've added look great, but aren't needed as you could use the twin-blade pylons to mount your weapons.
The first picture looks AWESOME!
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
EagleArk: The frontheaviness come a lot from not having rotors, hence the pics below to give you guys a better idea. Merging the two seats together means no room for attaching the rotors though, but I might add some more gubbinz to the rear to balance things out a bit.
Rose_Mountainz: thank you! Cabling will be added, no need to worry. I'm also looking for a place to add some pistons now that I'm getting the hang of it- maybe the rear landing gear
Arakasi: glad you like the buzzsaw, it definitely adds to that hornet profile you mentioned. As for the side profile: the rotors break that up a lot, as you can see in the pics below. The balance issue was easily remedied by adding a new peg for the flying stand with plastic tubing, then camouflaging it a bit with gs and wiring. it' snicely balanced now, the only problem is that the flying stand isn't high enough, so I'll have to make hima custom base. I feel chopping off the back would unbalance it, but let me know how you like it with rotors! I wanted to do something apache-like, but that idea ha to be discarded as soon as I knew I wanted the rotors in the middle, v22 style. A side by side.. Hmm a new idea...
Heffling: Stopping at the twin rotors would look totally unbalanced. Feel free to nick it btw, it's the way of the greenskin . The pylons will be getting stuff added, and the backwash from the rokkits would kill the rear grot if I added them there. besides, the wings add a (small) feeling of aerodynamics to the model.
Anywayz, here's a pic of the supadeffkopta with rotors and some minor adjustments; I hope this will alleviate some worries about the balance!
And a straight-on view:
So, better? Or worse?

I personally still would prefer to see the kopta stop after the twin rotors, but we'll see what I come up with this weekend when I do my attempt at your awesomeness.
One suggestion would be if you remove the stuff back of the rotors but want to keep the dual model pilot feel, you could always add a sidecar utilizing the bitz you removed.

Arakasi: one large bird for sure! Once finished, I'll add a scale shot to a regular kopta, he's about twice as long and three times as wide with the dual rotors. I figured in a game it's either 1st turn, scout, assault or if you don' t have the first turn it's outflank and assault, so the size doesn't bother me in the least
Vitruvian XVII: glad you like it . I donit have IA8, and have no intention of getting it, but it sounds cool. Is it the orks basing their vehicle of a land speeder storm or something?
Heffling: looking forward to your version! I discarded the sidecar idea when modelling becasue it would look horribly unbalanced. greenskins don't build the most stable vehicles at the best of times, but addign a sidecar to a kopt amight be pushing it .
WARBOSS TZOO: I certainly hope so!
Dysartes: check out the pics! . Hmm, a chinook... Maybe, if I ever need a truck
dregogg: thanks!
Commisssar Agro: Glad you like it! I certainly hope it's tabletop achievements will bas aimpressive as it's looks
So minor update: landing gear. Not sure I like it, I might rip it off and start over. It's not finished either, just the basic structure.
I find the landing gear balances out both halves a bit more, I'm just not sure about the shape or the worky bits. Right now, the rear would be a lot higher then the front when on the ground, but it looked the best this way. I'm assuming the claw folds up between the skids for argument's sake

I like it. The whole thing looks like it's sagging at the ends, very groty. The buzz saw looks like it could fold up in between the skis and the wheels, in the middle. I think if you could move the point of attachment back just a smidge it would be perfect.
The plasticard landing gear looks spectacular.
Watch those blades though, the left side one looks like it's miss-matched.

Vitruvian XVII: Hmm, a grot valkyrie... Interesting
Commissar Agro: I had the same feeling, like they simply used the back half of a buggy or something!
Sageheart: Glad you like'em . The first deffkoptas were simply ork koptas with booster seats, basically. As I've grown in confidence in skill, I felt I could improve on that. Nothing like a project like this to make you push your limits.
Young_logan: Imagine not having first turn vs that thing . For apocalyspe, I *might* whip up a datasheet; for regular play, he'll be regular deffkopta drawing way too much attention
Meatshield: Good to have you on board! The first burna.. still needs some paint . I agree on what you're saying about moving the engine back, but then you'd have to change the way the rotors are mounted as well, making it a totally different bird. Arakasi might steal your idea though, since it sounds very Apache to me.
The Good Green: Glad you like the dual kopta . Moving the buzzsaw back isn't an option, it's attached very solidly and there's no room further back . The plasticard landing gear must take very well on picture, since I think that especially the rear fork could be better; I might rip it off, not sure yet. And about the blades: not glued yet, so no worries . I really want those detachable so that they're not in the way of modelling or painting, and they're always the last thing to get some attention.
Llamahead: here's some more pics! The warboss' head has quite some detailing on him, it just isn't very visible in the pics (and since he's undercoated right now, I won't be able to take new pics till he's finished). he has a bionic skull and eye, making it possible to use him as Thraka. The paintjob should make it stand out a bit more, but it was hard to photograph due to the PK in the way. The Micro Art heads are reserved for my next bunch of kommissars, I have them in my bitz box and they're lovely if somewhat large - they'll just be big-headed grots - thanks for the suggestion way back in the thread!
Due to a solid lack of time (and modeller's ADD), I didn't get superfar on the kopta, but I did finish about 95% of the gs work, and added rokkits. Due to me having run guitar wire over the original magnets, I had to move the rokkit hard points - good planning 1, CK: 0. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, since it adds a lot of character to the silhouette of the kopta IMO.
Judge for yourself:
The gs fingerprints on the front head support have been removed after I noticed them on the pics. Things still to do: add some more detail to the areas where the legs were removed; add instruments (front seat won't be using the bike handles, so I need to improvise a console); make riders; make some kind of canopy.
Hope you guys like him!

The new landing gear looks good. It matches the height of the skis much better. Did you remove some form the middle of the body as well? The kopta looks a little shorter from nose to tail. Good work! I'm looking forward to the pilots.

Im gonna have to agree with everyone else and say that it definitely looks way better. I especially like the rockets.
And you do realise that now you've said it, you have to make a grot valk!
Ps. Any more fluff on the way?

Arakasi: I knew you'd come to your senses . As for the size: it's pretty big, but if you really want to do an apache style two-seater, smaller won't really be an option. Look at it this way: you want them to draw attention, so big and scary = good .
Rose_Mountainz: this is the update for you! Grot pilots!
The Good Green: Uhm didn't change the landing gear mate, was only considering it, and I didn't remove a bit either - maybe it's the angle of the pics? I added lots of gs with the seats and in all the gaps though, which has changed the shape a bit by filling things out, which makes it looks less slender. Pilots below!
Vitruvian XVII: Glad you like the improved version . The Valk won't be for anywhere near, with all the GW price rises I feel I'd rather spend money on stuff I need for the revolution. Maybe when the core is finished, but don't hold you breath . As for fluff: I've got nothing more written, so you'll need to be patient a while longer.
Commissar Agro: It's a grotspray now . Glad you like it!
Hits_the_spot: thank you!
Now, for what's apparently an eagerly awaited update: the pilots! I've built them so they can sit in their chairs, and that's all I'll be doing today. Tomorrow may see some more gs work (the front guy needs a scarf I think), but I don't want to mess up the current gs job. Here's the pics, let me know what you think!
Front pilot:
Rear pilot (got the model with the black undercoat, it's hell to photograph):
The pilots in their seats:
I still need to clean both up a bit, but that's for tomorrow; it's been longs days at work and this week promises to be very busy, so it'll be small updates and some half-finished stuff I'll finish to provide the good people of dakka with piccies

Rose_Mountainz; Thanks man! A grot army is all about charcter, IMO
Arakasi: I changed the thread title back just for you! Besides, look at the scale shot and tell me you don't want such a huge flying monstrosity chasing 'regular' deffkoptas
Commissar Agro: Glad you like'em! The piltos does look abt akward on his ow, but he looks better on the kopta. Once painted things will hopefully be a bit clearer.
ubbeknubbe: Thanks!
So, I finished off the kopta with some minor gs work, an additional exhaust and a pair of windshields. The pilots were left as-is since there isn't all that much room to add stuff. I'll be adding translucent plastic once it's finished as well. Scale shots are there just for fun
I'll be giving him a custom base so he's a bit higher up.
"Fly me closer, I want to hit him with my pipe!"
The last pic shows off the front pilot in his natural state - excited, chasing something, and about to turn said something into scrap metal!
Now, onto painting again. I've got a kommissar and a bunch of grots almost finished, together with a megagrot, so about time I put brush to mini I guess.

I dunno about the windshields. I kinda like the idea for the rear pilot, but the front pilot has that helmet (with visor) on. So I'm not convinced he would need or want one... also it looks like it's in the way.
That being said, I LOVE the pilots! Both look perfect for their positions on the kopta. Extra exhausts are always a plus!
You've really done wonders here. This may be the beginning of the dual kopta revival.

Wow the Squeaky Wagh has grown quite a bit since I last checked it and it just keeps getting better. After those burnas the Megagrots I'm nearly done with seem simple. I'm not sure about the dual kopta but it's perfect stylistically for an ork contraption.

MajorTom11: Thanks! And it's uniquely 'grotty'!
The Good Green: To me, the front windshield looks like it prevents the front pilot falling off - he looks pretty enthusiastic . I added one on the front and rear because I like symmetry.
You've really done wonders here. This may be the beginning of the dual kopta revival.
Heffling has been converted to the dual rotor church, and now I'm working on Arakasi when it comes to a two-seater - where's your dual kopta btw?
ChaoticMind: your megagrots are looking good! I managed to miss your thread when you posted them up first time, but I like what you did with them! What bothers you about the dual kopta? I kinda like the 'huge flying monstrosity' thing going on
Anwyay, here's some more piccies, this time of a kommissar and his cronies. The grots are just that, with a few that are even unconverted (the ones I assembled first), but I still like the little buggers.
Pics:
The blending on the squig is more subtle, but messing around with the pics messed up the effect.
Some grots:
And a group shot:
Next up: a megagrot needs finishing, I'm building an additional burna, and I want to make lootas as well, still wondering whether I should use the burnagrots as a base or go for something totally different. Suggestions welcome!

Maybe some kind of miniature tank, with the loota gun on it, would work I think. What would also be interesting is some eavy armored grots. I imagined somthing like a front line of grots holding the black orc shields and the rest just behind them. Just another idea for you Nice work so far love all of it, keep it up!!

Like many religions, I found this one to be full of lies and heartbreak! I may have dabbled in your heresy, but I have discovered that working with Green Stuff is not for me. Unfortunately, like many souls, I have fallen for the false hope of the Evangilist, CommissarKhaine.
In all seriousness, I found GS to be very difficult to work with. I'm sure part of this was because I had previously primed my models before attempting to convert, so it didn't want to stick to the primered areas at all. This meant each time I wanted to refine one area, another would become seperated from the model. I will give it one more chance after my next pay check in a couple of week (when I can afford to buy another set of Kopta's on eBay) and see if a thorough sanding and cleaning will help the GS stick better.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Also, can we get a shot of the full army you have now?

A low rumbling noise in the distance slowly lifted Skarag from the state of Orky "koncentration" he had been enjoying doing up Da Inna Circul's trukk. Deffkopta? Two deffkoptas? Skarag struggled to picture the machine in his mind. From the sounds alone he could distinguish two rotors, but they were too synchronised to suggest two deffkoptas, two unsynchronised for Space Marines, and not powerful enough for a warkopta. The power to weight ratio seemed... off... too. Whatever it was had peaked his curiosity - either an ingenious contraption - or an abomination. Skarag's curiosity was soon satisfied as the vehicle appeared over the horizon. Grabbing binokulars he inspected the machine. Grotz. A new idea was forming in his mind. He motioned to some of his nearby boyz, who had now also noticed the flying hazard in the distance. "Get dat fly'in kontraption - I need da parts!"

Ha! Unfortunately, my second deffkopta is at least two weeks away from being started, so the "kompetition" is on hold until then. It will literally be the last model I put together of my 1000pts. I don't want such a huge flying monstrosity - there I said it - well, at least not yet. At this rate I'll probably make a start on three deffkoptas - Avatar style (there's your two rotors, but not as large), Grot Apache (the two seater) and Star Wars Landspeeder style - and finish whichever one looks like it will come together fastest - I'm running out of time!
Keep up all of the excellent work! I've already noted Loota ideas, so thats it from me for now!

As i said previously stylistically the dual kopta is perfect the problem is in my head.
My brain keeps on telling me it will crash faster than a modern fighter aircraft without power. Another part of my brain says there's probably more lift created by those rotors than the wings of a modern fighter. Basically my sanity said good bye 4-5 years ago.
If you were to do another dual kopta I think lightening up the rear, making the side view closer to real helicopters, would help the look in my mind.
Or if you want to keep the body the same more of a Chinook for side profile and rotor placement.
That's just my own opinion so feel free to ignore me.
The front pilot definitely needs the scarf or a cape.
Your take on the quadrupedal loota would be interesting.
BTW thanks for the compliments!

Wow lots of replies with some cool ideas . Let's get going!
Ajcosford: Thanks man! I've tried a mini tank using spare russ tracks, but it's very wide and is almost twice as wide as a regular loota. The shield idea is interesting, would fit with the weapons team ideas.
Arakasi: some great ideas there, thank you! One thing I've considered is copying the old style IG HW teams; with the guns on wheeled carriages; it would still be hell to fit on 25 mm base though. The sentry gun with gun controller just sparked an idea in my mind: what if the grots would've gotten hold of some weapons servitors and then upgraded them? You could have a grot with an r/c controller and a gun servitor - these should just fit on the base
Heffling: Perseverance my son, you are being tested! Only those who keep the faith shall be rewarded! There is no false hope either my son, only false expectations!
The trick with gs is to apply it to the model, make a very basic shape, and then let it cure for 5-10 mins. It'll usually stay attached to the mini then, and will be a lot easier (i.e. less sticky) to work with. Another important thing: only work on one area at a time, or you'll mess up previous work - trust me on this one! whatwhat here on dakka has made a splendid gs tutorial, it's worth checking out! I've added some group shots below, painfully illustrating how much I have to paint. Conversion-wise, the army is moving along at a fair pace, but painting is always a bit slower with me.
Eagle Ark: those are brilliant! where did you get the pics from? I might steal these if I can figure out a way to make these and still keep them paintable!
Arakasi (pt. 2):
Ack-Ack and Cripnick had been messing around with Gitskag's new kopta, and they loved it! Gritty's deffsaw-kopta had been the terror of the Squeaky Waaaghh!!! for a while, but now... There was new boss in town - well, in the air - the megagrots had been quite explicit about a few things. As they were flying around, they saw a dust cloud approaching: fast vehicles, white and dark green, and with a deffkopta - orks! Ack-Ack, who was at the controls, figured gettin' the rest of the lads might be best idea, to Cripnick's great frustration; he wanted to mess around. " Come on man, we've got rokkits and buzzsaws - nothin' we can't kill". Look at da size of da cloud! there's plenty of'em, and they've got koptas too. Besides, you love Gritty doing fun stuff to flyas!. After a moment, Cripnick's face lightened up. " We'll need popped squigs!". Before they turbo-boosted off into the distance, they fired of a salvo of rokkits, just to make sure the orks wouldn't turn back. This was business!
Now we'll really have to do battle someday . On a more serious note: it's only two weeks man, long on the internetz, not so long irl; we'll see it when you get there!
ChaoticMind: that's grottiness for you, it works because they believe it works . One day I'm going to do something with a looted valkyrie, and that one will look more Chinook. This one was really an impulse creation (the start, anyway), due to me having two koptas lying around and the need for only one deffsawkopta - as you can see I tossed my sanity out of the window along time ago! . There's no room on the mini for a scarf, sadly, and a cape would be too superman,; I'd have to paint him blue and red then . Besides, the space behinghim will be filled up with a snotling, so there's no room for a cape. Quadrupedal loota is definitely interesting!
BTW thanks for the compliments!
You took an idea, made it your own so it fit into your army, and spent quite some attention on details - you deserve it ands I think it's a shame you didn't get many replies. As a remedy: here's ChatoicMind's blog
So, some group shots (they link to the gallery, so you can zoom in):
painted stuff:
Everything I've got assembled:
And for those wondering, here's where I stand:
HQ:
1 Big Mek with KFF, power klaw: 1 painted
1 Warboss in mega-armour: 0 painted
ELITES:
5 burnagrots out of 10-15; 0 painted
7 megagrots out of 9; 4 painted
0 Lootas out of 10-14: 0 painted
TROOPS
4 kommisars out of 12: 3 painted
56 grots out of 120: 24 painted
FAST ATTACK
5 defkoptas out of 2 : 1 painted
3 buggies/wartrakks out of 3: 1 painted
HEAVY SUPPORT
1 battlewagon out of 2: 1 painted
3 killa kans out of 6: 1 painted
1 deffdread out of 1: 0 painted
So, quite some work cut out for me! Now, onto the lootas: I've got the following ideas remaining:
- A weapons team based on the old IG HW teams, i.e. big guns on wheeled carriages
- A servitor with a grot controlling it by remote
- a grot tank
- EagleArk's brilliant find, the flintstone-loota
I'm gonna make an attempt at each, see which ones I like best, and then post them for scrutiny - might be a while though!

Arakasi: I built three without buzzsaws before I got the codex. I might use them in apoc or something, but otherwie I won't have points to spare. I mainly want access to a lot of stuff, and be able to build a decent army. Here's a 1750 point list I threw together that I might use at a tourney in August, if I can get enough models finished:
Grot rev 1750
HQ
Warboss: mega armour, cybork body, bosspole: 115
Big Mek: KFF, power klaw: 110
ELITES
10 burnaboyz: 150
5 lootas: 75
5 lootas: 75
TROOPS
29 gretchin, 2 runtherd: 107
19 gretchin, 1 runtherd: 67
19 gretchin 1 runtherd: 67
5 Meganobz, 2x rokkit 1x skorcha: 215
Battlewagon, deffrolla, 2x big shoota, boarding plank: 125
FAST ATTACK:
Deffkopta, twin linked rokkits, buzzsaw: 70
Deffkopta, big shoota, buzzsaw: 60
3 buggies (2x track), twin-linked rokkits: 115
HEAVY SUPPORT:
3kans, grotzookas: 135
3 kans, grotzookas: 135
Battlewagon, deffrolla, 2x big shoota, boarding plank: 125
I feel it's lacking a bit in grots though, so it'll need playtesting!
EagleArk: found them this time around, thanks! I like what he did, glueing troll heads to ork bodies was a stroke of genius.
Rose_Mountainz: no stopping them now! The first concept model is a remote-controlled btw. Enjoy!
So as said before, I'll be building some concept models to decide which one I'll use. The grot tank is out due to being too big, but the other options are still in. Here's the first concept model, a remote controlled looted servitor:
And with the grot:
And a better view of the remote:
Not the best pics, but the lighting sucked. So, what do you guys think? I believe I can still improve the design adding more bionics and such, but I feel that maybe he lacks some grottiness. I'll see how the HW team turns out and sleep over it a bit before making a final decision. C&C welcome!

Lord of Change: Thanks!
Rose_Mountainz: Thought you'd like that one . I was considering giving the servitor orange clothing to tie him into the army, but I'm not sure it'll work out. Maybe I should use snotlings instead and put them on the servitor's shoulder?
Vitruvian XVII: I agree, but the gs wasn't fully dry when I took the pic. I'll be cleaning it up later on. Maybe I should try out brown stuff, it's rumoured to be easier to work with when it comes to making hard edges.
The Good Green: that was my fluff . There's only one thing that concerns me about the commissar: I just built a 1750 point slist, and I would only need 4 in that list, let alone smaller builds... On the one hand, I want to add more grots, on the other hand I still want a competitive army - choices, choices... Now go finish that mek-shop!
Commissar Agro: Glad you liek him! I'm quite proud of the remote myself it's pretty basic but it get sthe idea across
Now some minor updating: here's a next loota model. I had an old Necromunda heavy stubber lying around (from Brakar the Avenger), and figured a grot wielding it would be pretty cool. I might need to gs him a bandana though - and maybe a jade figurine . he doens't really scream 'loota' to me, but he was too cool to clog up the base with another grot. My other lootas will be weapons teams with biggerized bases (plasticard on top so ihave some room to play with), but this guy will be added as is :
[
And I also finished another megagrot, bringing my grand total up to 4
The gallery messed around with the colours a bit, but the orginal was pretty faded due too the flash. Hopefully I'll be able to bring you a grot weapons-team next, but the models are proving pretty hard to conert - those plastic grots will only get you so far...

Great work as always. My only advice would be, don't limit yourself to one design! It is very grotty/orky to have alot of variation, so mix it up! Just do something unique for their paint scheme to tie them together, so your opponents won't get confused.

Vitruvian XVII: Me neither . If I find some, I'll let you know how it works out! And it's a rebel grot - of course he's ripped!
Heffling: I totally agree . Since I'll be doing two loota units, one will be weapons teams and one will be looted servitors. That way it'll be easy to distinguish between them as well.
Commissar Agro: Yes he is . I looked at the stubba, thought 'Rambo' (or Hot shots) and figured I just needed to make this guy! The megagrot is just a regular megagrot, but I like the expression on his face- he be badass as well!
Dysartes: Couldn't agree more! I just need to gs him a bandana and he'll be good to go!
A slightly different update today, since my maelstrom package arrived and it included a battlewagon. Naturally, my shiny new package syndrome (also known as modeller's ADD) kicked in and I felt like ripping of the plastic and starting on a second wagon. I didn't want to do a second squiggoth one, and while looking for inspiration I stumbled onto Sukigod's biggerized wagon. Combine that with the fact that I had two track units and that I like the gorgon:
I followed the cutting pattern from Sukigod, but after that this wagon will be totally different, since I inverted the body, making where the cabin usually is the rear of the wagon. I'll be putting a cabin in the back though (it's orginal place), since I want to keep the front as a huge bay full of grots waiting to be unleashed. Now I just need a system to lift the deffrolla so the little guys don't get splattered as soon as they get out . The plasticard is just there for structural support right now, I'll be grottifying it later on.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Vitruvian XVII: your prayers to the machine gods have been answered
Arakasi: So, you surf the net so you don't find inpiration? . Look at it this way: if you can finish your 1000 points in time, you can get yourself a reward by making a biggerized truck or wagon - consider it an additional motivation
Young Logan: the finished BW may still be a while off, but this pic should give you an idea of the general shape of the thing. As for armament: two big stubbas and a deffrolla should do . If I ever add big guns, I'll make them like medieval cannons, on a wheeled chassis. That way, I can add them anywhere!
So, some progress pics. I built up the basic shape. The cabin at the rear is still loose, hence the rather ramshackle look. I'll be building up the sides near the cabin a bit more, and I need to figure out a defrolla contraption, becasue I intend to give the BW an assault ramp. On my other BW, not only is it hard to imagine 20 orks in there, but my grot gorgon has a much higher ground clearance then the IG one, so I need some way of gettin' the boyz in action while not breaking their legs or getting splattered by the deffrolla .
Piccies!
As you can see the top of the turret is just balanced on, hence the weird angle. If I can pull it off I'll keep the roof removable and build up the interior.
The side view nicely shows the profile, which looks a bit ship-like. The rear tracks are not attached yet, since I realised (after attaching the front pair ) that it might make painting rather hard.
Things that need doing:
- Build a deffrolla and an assault ramp that fits over it
- Build up the rear and try to keep the roof removable.
- Make the platform bigger
- Add a decent underside to camouflage all the cunnin' kuttin'

I can't help thinking that the sides need to be a bit bigger and you need some struts over the top like the FW one. However, this isn't a copy, and i imagine the logistics would be hard so i dunno really. Just putting it out there Good work, and keep it up!

No. But I do have to be careful of over inspiration whilst deadlines loom. I was just a bit caught off guard by your latest inspirational project - it just seemed to come out of nowhere. Have you thought about a span that goes over the deff-rolla, with a ramp that hinges down in front of the rolla? May look a bit over-extended..

Vitruvian XVII: Thanks ? I'm planning out the interior, and I think it'll work out.. The floor has a big hole in it where the turret ring was, and I think I'll add a ladder and a grot poking his head through; maybe some bits to suggest an engine room? The sides will be bigger, and the rear will be widened a bit so you walk past the cabin, I just need to get the plasticard work done.
Gathering Storm: Thank you!
MajorTom11: More balls then brains sometimes . Megagrots and burnagrots tend to ttake quite some room, so filling him shouldn't be a problem!
Lord of Change: Thanks!
Arakasi: Figured that much. I ahd the same problem, as a matter of fact. I intend to get my lootas and maybe some more basic grots done, and then my maelstrom packacge showed up... And since I can resisit anything but temptation, I decided to buold the second battlewagon. My excuse is that I'll need it anyway .Playing games is a nice reward, I played one yesterday wioth an incomplete army (test run for the grots), and it felt wrong. I much prefer a fully finished army, so I can understand your pain!
monkeytroll: Thanks! I'v considerd a Z-shaped construction go over the defrolla that could 'flip' down, creating a bridge to deploy the grots. Still in the conceptual phase though...
Dysartes: lol... If you can find me an example, I'll consider it No idea on how to an escalator type thingy that fits over a defrolla...
alexwars1, Commissar Agro: same offer, find me an example
On the gaming side, I played a1750 battle vs space marines yesterday with the list I posted higher up (p. 15). It was an annihilation mission in which I had 16 KPs vs his 10, but I won because I focused everythign on one half of the battle and my opponent had some bad scatters with his pods an vanguard vets. Still, it felt like I needed a lot of luck... The 5-man loota units aren't very reliable, the 10 man burna boyz on the other hand...were brilliant . I didn't use my kans very well either, and as I feared, enemy dreads are a horror to this army. So, I'll be considering some minor changes, though I like the basic list. More fine tuning is in order I guess! I' hope to get the basic cabin shape done somwhere tonight or tomorrow, and maybe a defrolla with bridhe idea.
Cheers!

How about a cunningly designed Deff Rolla based on the WW2 Sherman Crab but positioned at a height to just hit bigga enemies heads just having it raised a (scale) meter of the ground would do the trick!

Post by: Commissar Agro
Sorry i was just joining the bandwagon there.
congrats on the win.
I think Llamaheah has a good idea but...
instead have the deff rolla be able to move up and down so that the assualt ramp may be lowered and the grots run out underneath the rolla. I don't know how you would do it though.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Llamahead: Just using chains fro a deffrolla doens't really merit D6 S10 hits vs vehicles IMO, but the attachment of the system is quite ingenious. If I can reproduce it, I could just raise the deffrolla and have the ramp attached to the 'deck'. Nice find!
Commissar Agro: Figured that much . If I use a lever system I should be able to have the deffrolla raisable - this might be a good idea for those two grabba klaw arms I still have. Thanks for the idea!

I give you many examples of escalators.
No-one said you were after sensible suggestions, after all.
If the escalator doesn't go ahead, can I suggest one of those inflatable ramps they have in planes in case of a splash landing? For example, see the end of Die Hard 2.....

That battlewagon's looking like a thing of beauty. I think you should have a looted tank or something, it would fit in with your fluff and look great!

HadoukenAvenger: Thanks!
Dysartes. A BW example of course! Hm. Die Hard 2... I'll have to make a grot McClane now
Boss 'eadbreaka: Thank you! A looted thank would fit in, but the codex entry is so horribly bad... Maybe I'll build some kind humm-vee for the grot tanks, the rules seem kinda fun!
Now, for some progress pics! I finished the basic shape, now I need to add some detailing, set up the interior (roof is still removable), fill up the plasticard, and make a decent underside. The deffrolla has become huge, but I needed some space for it to be able to lift without being in the way of the ramp. I'm still on the fence on that one, so suggestions are welcome (Dysartes: sensible suggestions! )
Piccies:
And with a grot and megagrot for scale purposes:
So, opinions?

Post by: MajorTom11
Pretty awesome!
I think the roller looks good, but is too far away from the tank when deployed... maybe shorten the struts? Also, some type of shock absorbing plasti rod rig could look cool.
It sort of looks like a mini aircraft carried to me because of the flat top with the isolated 'building' or tower... maybe cool to take some additional inspiration for detailing from that? I dunno, just brainstorming -
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Hmmm. My first thought was to move the hinge back further, which would bring the roller closer, but would reduce your clearance over the ramp. That and the side jutting bits would get in the way or make it too wide (in my opinion)....
My second thought was bring the roller closer and just have the ramp open horizontally over it, allowing the grotz to disembark with out danger of the rolla - well - until the BW moves again You could possibly even hinge the ramp in the middle so they don't have to jump down so far...
My third thought got a bit crazy and incorporated horizontal sliding of the pivot point...
I do think the rolla is too far forward though...

Post by: The Good Green
I think shorting it is a good idea. Maybe make the ramp fold in the middle like a truck lift.
Also, did I miss the pics of the underside? It looks like you fabricated some of the frame for the tracks to connect to. Can you post some shots of that? Thanks.
The upper deck looks cool. I love the little latter. I'm really starting to think about all the floor space you have there. It's a lot of room for goofy details.

yeah,
I really like how different the main body looks.
I'm just not sold on the roller mate.
I can see why your deffRolla arms are so long, but I think your going to have a few game issues with it.
Does it count for LOS to the wagon?
Is it the roller that has to impact a enemy tank to ram it or the wagon hull?
Where is the center of the vehicle?
Before the new battle wagon kit there was images of custom 1'+ long battle wagons that would start sideways on the deployment edge, in the first turn pivot 90degree on their center and grab 6" of free movement! this will still be fresh in some peoples minds when they see this!
But loving the squeaky waaagh!!!
moah fluff please!
Panic...
edit:
You could ditch the DeffRolla... looked good without it.
IMO fluff wise once you place a big heavy spiky deffRolla on the front of a battle wagon just by looking at it you lose all front access privilages.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
MajorTom11: Thanks! I agree that it's too long, I've shortened it (pics below); the defrolla will be getting more detailing, but I need to get the positioning right before messing about with details. Hmm, aircraft carrier; if I hadn't added the sides, a grot jetfighter would've been cool. Still, I might change the setup of the big shootas to match carrier gun posts and such. Thanks for the idea!
Arakasi: Option two is my choice . I'll probably add an additional hinged part so the grots can reach the ground - maybe wioht hydraulics. The horizontal pivot point did occur to me, but then I realized I'd have to build a 'gatehouse' around the ramp which would ruin the effect. I also thought about klaw/buzzsaw arms, but that din't really seem deffrolla-like to me.
The Good Green: shorting and folding it is . No pics of the udnderside yet, I've added few for you. Nothing too spectacular though, I've only detailed the sides where the tracks will go a bit. I plan to add some snots here and there, but I want to keep the surface relatively open to get that cargo loader feel across.
ceorron: It may be somewhere, but here's the recipe:
- black undercoat
- macharius solar orange basecoat
- vomit brown drybrush
- ogryn flsh wash
- drybrush vomit brown again
- on big stuff, add additional highlights with a mix of vomit brown and bleached bone, and end with almost pure bleached bone.
Enjoy!
Finch Claw: thanks!
Panic: Glad you like it! Always means something when coming from a fellow grot revolutionary . I agree that the orginal roller design wasn't all that, hence the shortening. Good point about the game issues as well, hadn't even considered those; and the whole 6" gain thingy is just... low. The new design shouldn't have those problems, especially since the ramp hangs over the rolla, making it a 'real' part of the hull. As for ditching the rolla: that would be like ditching a third of my anti--tank potential! Plus, I like the concept . The whole front access thing... You've got a point, but this battlewagon will prove that it's possible . The defrolla is removable anyway, so I can still change my mind.
Glad you love the squeaky waagh, fluff is being cooked up but not ready for publication just yet... A bit more patience!
Anyway, some piccies with the shortened rolla arms; detailing still needs to be added. And two pics of the rear track area for The Good Green
The plastic rod in there was added for structural stability; I'll reinforce it with plasticard before closing it up just to be sure! So, better? I say yes, but I still have the buzzsaw arms in mind as well!

Hinge another ramp from the end of your current one so it rotates fully. In the up position, it should lay on the current ramp, effectively doubling its thickness. In the down position it should rotate to provide a ramp past the rolla. Add pistons and gubbins to taste
Its still a mighty long battlewagon. Oh well, more scrap parts for Da Dark Angelz

FFFFFFFFFFFing RAD!!!!!! The interior is awesome. Nothing like a little animosity to liven up a cockpit. I'm gonna steel that ladder, too. Great use of those handle things. The new mods to the ramp are spot on! The blade is perfect, and it moves!!!!! I would say "too much" but, to be honest, there is no such thing! The Good Green: Thanks man! I was not as sure about this one as about the walking bw, oddly enough - I really needed the inside to add a bit of life and grotty goofiness, I guess . The ladder is an easy solution and allows for something to do with pretty useless bits . I won't be putting spikes on the deffrolla though; it can turn right now if I move the wagon forward, and that's a feature I want to keep. I'll probably add a few armour plates to break it up though - if I'll be tinkering with anything, it'll be the rolla.

Masterful plasticard work there, sir. Can those pistons come off? I've tried to pull something like that off before, but the glue ran and glued everything together.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
monkeytroll: couldn't agree more . This whole model started off because of the bitz box rummaging; I had an additional pair of tracks and a second gun turret which helped out tremendously with the build. And it's not ADD, we just love everything!
MajorTom11: Thank you! But now I'll have to reconfigure the crew.. lol. I'll see what I can pull off with the grots I have lying around; now, where to get a butterfly?
The Good green: Thanks! The top part of the pistons can be removed (the thinnest bit); the bottom is attached to a plastic rod. The trick is to build it in stages: first, you build the big T-bit (the lower bit); let this dry throughly, then atach it to the proper point on the ramp. Then, you take a bit of plastic rod that fits inside the tube, measure the correct length, and chose a poitn to attach it to. In this case, iadded a pin that fits in a bit of tube on the dozer blade, which allows for removal. I could have drilled a hole and put a bit of rod through to make it more 'real', but that felt a bit fiddly to me and I was afraid I'd break stuff, so.. this'll do .

How snug are those moving parts? Are these your first moving parts? I ask because I am interested in how well they will work after painting. I have a number of parts on my Trukks that are meant to slot on/off - and now that I have painted them, what was a snug fit is now a force/scrape the paint fit Just a warning if you weren't aware of it! Meanwhile I think I am going to have to go back and make mine less snug and then repaint...

Young_Logan: Thank you! The working pistons were more to see if I could pull it off; the usefulness of it is rather limited
Llamahead: Thanks, glad you like the wagon! It's totally different from the legged battlewagon, but I like that, it's a bit more orky that way. Also, it's so big you can't mistake it for anything else!
EagleArk:
Arakasi: You're welcome - I'm always up for a chance to show off . As for the moving parts: pretty snug, but they'll only need an undercoat and some metallic paint. It's the first time I'm trying working pistons, but I've found with tanks and such that moving are usually ok unless you paint lots of layers on. Plus, I have a plan B: I have plastic rod one size smaller then the one I'm currently using ,and the worky bit is removable, just in case.
Finch Claw: see the answer above
Commissar Agro: Thank you!
Rose_Mountainz: Thanks! Now to get some paint on it...
The Good Green: make sure that the points where the pistons attach are movable; that's usually the key problem - well, it was on my first attempt ayway .
Now onto something new: We went on a holiday for a week, and I managed to get my warboss done. Not all that much, but with a kid plus sightseeing, it's more then I expected .

The Good Green: Pistons are the only way they'll get over S2 Plus, it adds tot he industrial, primitive technology feel always associate with greenskins. The backpack uses a sentinel heavy flamer as a base, which adds nice techy stuff, and then I added plasticard and tubing for the cabling and exhaust. Since the base of the suits are supposed to be Tau, I wanted those parts to look (relatively) clean; the exhausts on the other hand just can't be clean . Once I get a bit more finished for a new group shot, I'll add in Grotskull with the megagrots; they're quite a sight here on my shelf.
Arakasi: masking tape would help out I guess, and I woud for I, but I kinda like the irregular look for the grots. I'll probably add some more weathering to cover up the parts where I've messed up the most though. Painting the studs doens't really work, since the metal surface area is too small too really stand out. Besides, I don"t feel the need to break up the orange too much. If you look at space marines, nobody wants to break up their uniform colours either; I keep wondering why people want the colour to be broken up on the grots -besides the fact that they don't like the orange, of course...
Yggdrasil: Thanks!
EagleArk: I just might do that, nice idea!
Finch claw: no sprue used on this guy mate, hate to disappoint you

Most space marines I've seen are broken up - by metallics, spot colours, details etc. I just have a preference for painting the studs and I think it looks great, not unnoticeable. That and I don't like swathes of uniform colour - well, especially on my Orks. (Space Marines could be another matter... but I don't collect them). But hey - you're doing this for you, not me - and I do still think he looks great, regardless of the studs! So continue to keep up the good work. I'll just steal the modelling ideas, not the paint job

Gunkh Inmashnozz: Thanks!
Arakasi: These guys are also broken up, by the blue, the chipping, the face, ... If you compare them with ultramarines, blood angels,... they may even be less uniform . The studs can look great when using a darker colour like you're doing, but I don't like on the orange. In the end, tastes differ though, it's as simple as that. Feel free to steal away, I'm doign the same to you, so I guess it's only fair

Still waiting on the hammer-Grot and butterfly bud! lol
If I may make a suggestion, looking at your warboss again, I think it could do with a nice dose of soot weathering powder and a little chipping, I think this would make the orange stand out really nicely while providing a bit of contrast, and help pickout out the relief of your awesome conversion.
What do you think?

MajorTom11: My only hammer-wielding grot will be on the inside, but I have a few with nets; if I can make a winged squiggy or something, they're on! As for the warboss: I've never tried weathering powders before, so I have no idea on how I would do that... Besides, there is some weathering already there on the exhausts and the scratches on the metal; where would you suggest I add more?
22687
Post by: MajorTom11
All over the place! A touch of rust, some soot/scorch... rust in joints and rivets (although I would use a brown as orange will obviously not pop much), black selectively on leading edges, guns, impact sites etc etc.
They are actually pretty easy, and the beauty is that you can very easily clean them up if you don't like it, you have to varnish them or set them with mineral spirits to make them really stick and be wear resistant. Whether or not you use them on this project, I highly recommend giving them a go! I used them on my termie's gun barrels, all the rust is weathering, some dust of the dead termie, the turquoise oxidation on the ork in my gallery etc etc etc.

Very much awesome; battlewagon, grot paintjob & commander.
My only suggestion is that the blood only the claw looks very basic compared to the rest of the paintjob. Not quite sure what it needs... Gloss, bring in a few layers of colour (reds/browns), more complex spatter & blood trickle pattern...?
PS. arterial blood is v.much darker in real life, think the colour of rich red wine.

MajorTom11: I'll order a bunch when I place a new maelstrom order and see what it gives; time to expand my modelling skills a bit I guess - and the fact that you can clean them up easily is quite reassuring for me
Atre: Glad you like'em! As for the blood: I'm going to experiment with washing/gloss varnish a bit and see what it gives; red just isn't my colour though. There's a few different layers on the klaw, but I guess I could still improve a bit on it.
I know arterial blood is darker, but dark blood tends to look caked on (I know, that looks black after a while) instead of fresh on a mini, and the bright red looks more dramatic. the blood splatter is a good idea though, definitely going to do that!
monkeytroll: word!
Gitsplitta: I could easily make a piston for demonstration purposes, but I don't know wat kind of info/pic you need; what's unclear in the pevious pics?

Post by: Gitsplitta
It's just one part actually. How are you able to attach the piston ends to the structure while retaining their ability to rotate freely?
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
I cheat
The cylinder part has a T-bit with some rod through, easy enough.
The smaller bit of rod is loose in the bigger cyilinder. The end of the smaller bit has a 'pin' attached going sideways, wich isn't glued to the ramp but is fitted into a socket on the ramp itself.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
So how do you keep the pins from working their way out of the structure (i.e. wiggling out)? Or do they just not seen enough movement normally to have that issue?
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
A tight fit . They fit quite snugly in to the socket, and the pin is pretty long.
If you want a more solid attachment, I'd suggest adding a t-structure like I did on the piston bottom, or drilling a hle through the end od the rod and putting a pin through. I thought it'd be too fiddly, so I didn't bother on these, but I guess you could if you wanted to be sure.
Also, the length of the rod matters a lot; if it's still in the tube by a decent bit when fully extended, there just isn't enough room for the pin to wiggle out.

Could be the photo, you have very good points on all counts. I like the dark to light scaling of blood 'cos it apes the real thing, but bright is eye catching and might be a better way to do it.

Khaine,
Stop being so awesome. You're making my painting ego feel small and impotent.
Great work as always! I look forward to seeing your army finished one day. Maybe if I go to Denmark again some day, I can talk my wife into letting me go to Belguim for a bit (She's from DK).

Have you thought about making the main colour blue and the trim orange for a model?
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Gitsplitta: Thanks! The blue adds some life to the orange IMO; and it's thanks to the encouragement I got here that I went ahead on the blood, and I'm glad I did!
The Good Green: Thanks! Good light helps
Heffling: don't be so modest, I've seen your pics and they're more than decent; Denmark and Belgium are a few 100 kilometers apart, but I'm sure we can arrange for something. When it comes to construction, the army is moving toward 'playable at 1750' state, so after that, it's painting full speed ahead!
Finch claw: Why? I don' think the effect would be as striking, and I don't see any model where it would fit to invert the colour - turning a grot into a librarian might be pushing it
So, minor update: a finished burnagrot. Enjoy!
Four more to make and I'll have playable unit size!

Wow! You need serious psychological counseling my friend.... (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). Wow.... all that pipe work is truly amazing... I like the choice of the bandaged head... suggests that the flamer *might* have gone off just a little too early on occasion...

Only problem with stuff like this is I keep having to up my game with my bioniks, I'm just hoping you're not going to tell us they're all working pistons too
Isn't that the whole point? I know I push myself abit harder because I have people to compare to, and dakka is a very creative community. I know I've upped my game because of it . Oh, and working pistons are somethingI'll probably save for my stompa - I'd love to make one that can actually walk
Gitsplitta: as do most of us . The pipe work isn't really hard, it's just time-consuming. I have to admit I'm glad I'm over half for these guys, though. I'm trying to make all their head sunique, and the bandaged one definitely fit the bill
Arakasi: thanks!
Atre: Glad you like'em . A megagrot: about an evening, excluding drying time (I'm a slow painter with a young kid, so painting time comes at a premium). If you mean a burnagrot (the pic highe ronthe page): no idea, haven't finished one yet :(
Commissar Agro: thank you!
Now, onto something new: I managed to finish buldign three new killa kans yesterday, so here's the pics:
I tried to add some poses to the models The one on the right is a stock model, just halved his engine with a magnetised rokkit arm, the middle one is the most heavily converted with the scenic,a nd the one on the right has a scratched rokkit arm. I'll build grotzooka arms for them as well, but that's for later on.
The kitbashed rokkit kan:
And the one squishing the ork:
Maybe I should add wings to this guy's helmet, just for Arakasi!
Let me know what you think about'em, using (almost) unconverted vehicles is a bit weird to me!

Post by: The Good Green
CommissarKhaine wrote: Maybe I should add wings to this guy's helmet, just for Arakasi! lol Do it! Maybe tilt the kan forward a bit too. It looks like the ork is tripping it. It is kinda weird that they are almost all standard issue...

You know - my first thought was you better not paint that Ork in Da Dark Angelz colours... Wingz and I might not be able to stop myself flying over to settle the matter! (Hopefully its not some sort of bizarre foreshadowing...) I see The Good Green ninja'd me to it!
Is the the biker Nob head? It looks a bit large for the boy body - but could just be the camera angle...
The Killa Kans are great models (even if I haven't assembled one yet and just use them for bitz!), which lend themselves to looking good with less conversions. And they still all look unique - which is sorta the point. I try to make my first of any new model not *too* far from the stock - just to get a feel for it Your next 3/6 will probably need more conversions to continue the diversity though

Heh stupid ork...
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
The Good Green: I must admit it's very tempting . The kan is tilted back because that makes him look like he's posing, proudly standing over the fallen ork.
Arakasi: As soon as I knew I was putting an ork under there... I'll be on the look-out for approaching skorpion-deffkoptas The head is from the nob biker, because it was the only one that had the right expression to it. It's a tad big, but the angle biggens it even further- it's still in the 'ok' range irl
As for the kila kans: these are models 4-6 that I assembled, but if you don't feel like cutting up the legs, you're pretty limited when it comes to posing. You can still make them look very different with the shoulders and arms and details so...
Finch Claw: of course, he's an ork!

awesome stuff haha that grot got revenge on that ork
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
As Arakasi said, they're still unique models so no problem with an almost vanilla build there, I really must pick up some of those kans soon.
Tend to agree with The Good Green about the angle of the kan squashing the ork, it looks a tiny bit awkward, but that could well be the angle of the pics, you have the real piece in front of you.
And, yeah, that is the point even after a few weeks here I'm looking harder at my work, or more like looking longer, when in the past I would have said 'done..next'.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
moonshine: I even improved the revenge a bit
monkeytroll: after a good night's sleep, I agree with you and The Good Green, so I decide to change the kan's stance. It did involve breaking off one foot at the ankle, but nothing gs can't fix . Now he looks a lot more like he's leaning in, putting his weight on the ork.
I also added some wings and a feather for some dark angelz iconography. After both of our armies are finsihed, I really want to play Arakasi
As you can see, the pose is a bit more natural from all angles now.
And to finsih off, the squished ork, desperately struggling to break free:
I would have loved to add the really big wings to his helmet, but they didn't fit properly on the base, so I had to settle for smaller ones instead. Let me know what you think!

Artsoldier35: Thanks!
The Good Green: Glad you like it . As for the retaliation: it can't be worse then wat orks regularly do to grots so...
Gitsplitta: Yes, Empowerment! Time to burn some grot braziers! .
monkeytroll: thank you! The breaking wasn't all that bad in the end, the killa kan ankles are a good place to break, very easy to fix. Da dark angel's pose is all about the stuff under his back really, it adds a sense of struggle, this time even without it looking like he's tripping up a kan
moonshine: Yes, he does
Arakasi: Bring it on! Glad you like him, and this just means we'll have to play each other someday I guess

moonshine: Thanks!
Heffling: lol; not exactly a banana peel, but if I ever manage a shokk attack gun... I have few nice ideas for things to do to orks !
Young Logan: painted pictures would imply it being painted and I'm not quite there yet - not even an undercoat I'm afraid.
I've been busy with holidays, construction work in the house, and preparing for Conquest of Mythodea. Cleaning up full plate is hard work. So, little modelling time, but I'l hopefully be able to pick up the pace after I'm back next week. I've got a tourney where I'll be takign the grots end of August and I still need a buggy, a bunch of grots, 8 lootas, and 4 burngrots, so I'll need to pick up the pace! Not only that, but I got a stompa from my wife, so I'll have to something special with that as well.
To more or less justify my blabbering on: here's a minor fluff update:
++++++
The ‘free’ Ogryn freaked the grots out. They had followed the hunting party to the camp, carrying the dead miners when told to do so. They had kept following Scrabz and Scragnutz till they had told them to stop. And then... They had just waited, standing there. They had accepted orders, but shown no intention of acting without being ordered. To the hyperactive grots, this was highly unsettling. They had been offered some of the ‘umie flesh, and they had just looked at it, only eating when told to do so – it was good though, Scrabz loved the taste, he’d eat Enemy over squig any time! “ Come’on ya big lug! Do something!” Scrabz threw his hands up in despair and frustration. They had saved them! Yet, the servitor didn’t understand! All of a sudden, the drill-armed servitor blurted out a message: “T his unit will require additional power within 24 hours”. “What Power? Big Lug?” “Electrical systems are running low on power; please replace or reload batteries within 24 hours” The grot was dumbfounded. It sounded technical though, so he decided to get Gitskag.
Gitskag’s genetic ‘awakening’ had been speeding up, and symbols such as a lightning bolt immediately made sense to him now. Soon, they found a power source in an abandoned tunnel, and hooked up the servitors.
The servitors’ cybernetic augmentations also made clear what some of the refuse was, which had been puzzling Gitskag: it was mekanikal bitz to replace body parts! He immediately set to work on that as well, stealin’ juice from the same powercable they used to reload the Ogryn’s power source. Soon, Squealy was walking around again, his crushed feet replaced with stompy iron ones. They occasionally misbehaved, but getting kicked by your own feet still beat crawling around like a crippled squig. Gitskag and Gutrag had combined their knowledge, and they were proud of the result. The offer to replace limbs was made to a lot to grots with small injuries the next few days, who generally were smart (and cowardly) enough to politely refuse – and bring witnesses.
++++++++++
The ogryn had been accepted quite easily into the grot community. In part, it had amazed him, considering the grot’s vicious nature. But the servitors were a visible symbol that the Enemy could be defeated. Besides, the grots called Scrabz and Scragnutz had taken a liking to the Ogryn they had saved, and defended them ferociously from any grots up to some mischief. The drill-equipped Ogryn had started to respond to BigLug (mainly because Scrabz always called him that),and in doing so had gained a name. The grots considered the servitors big and dumb because they didn’t understand what had been done to them in order to turn them into servitors; one could say they treated them like small children or pets: bossing them around, but with a hint of affection.
++++++++++++++
The Enemy had erected a plasteel barrier in the tunnel to keep out what they thought was a subterranean monster, but the grots had waited for a few days after the construction was finished, and had then tunnelled around the barrier. They had an entrance now, a way to get at the Enemy. They weren’t going to give it up! The hunting packs had been training ferociously, a new goal in mind. The spearguns were good for hunting anything, even if they were very heavy and low on ammo. Gitskag was already thinking about designs to improve them. The highly volatile substances they had found in the toxic waste sumps had been promising, and he had been experimenting with the explosive mixtures, a genetic need kicking in and providing him with an instinctive knowledge, if not with common sense – the resultant explosion and the burning squig hound running around the village sparked the interest of more grots, and soon there was a group of like-minded grots experimenting with explosives and burny stuff.
+++++++++++++++++
The grot parties had slowly explored the tunnel system and the artificial caves created by the Adeptus Mechanicus when they constructed the Biologis facility. The size of everything was intimidating to the grots: huge caves filled with engines powered by geothermal probes, tended to by servitors; loading bays bigger then the ‘uge cave they called home… And not a living soul around! All they encountered were servitors, who were rarely programmed to respond. Some, however, had been programmed to eradicate vermin. The grots quickly adapted and learned to recognise them, and soon they were toting laserweapons and shotguns based off the servitor’s weapons. All the new tech made Gitskag drool all over the place, forcing him to reluctantly admit more grots to his inner circle of techies. The grots made sure to evade capture, and managed to advance technologically at an astonishing speed. Without the bigger orks to suppress them, grot society came into its own.
++++++++++++++++++++

Ah, yes. My Grandmother was Belgian too... Flemish, French, German, English, Latin & a smattering of Spanish/Italian. One of those horribly polyglottal countries, bit like Switzerland . Shame I can only bumble my way through German at best.

Arakasi: Thank you! Practice helps, plus getting taught our second language real quick: we start age 10.
Hobofisherman: Thank you!
Commissar Agro: Thanks man!
Gitsplitta; part 1: Thanks!
part 2: Gotta love gretchin. It's the weird and humorous stuff that got me into playing GW games in the first place, and I tend to miss out on those in the newer editions - so I've decided to add some weirdness and humour myself!
KingoftheJuice: Thank you! It's not coming along as fast as I wish, but that's real life for you...
monkeytroll: Thanks! And it's never too late - consider Chinese,; there's plenty of people to practise it with
Atre: Thanks, and your grandma got me beat: I'll match her Flemish, French, English and Latin, but I only know a few words of German besides that. That's what you get get when only a few people speak your native tongue: horrible polyglots
Rose_Mountainz: Thank you! I'm aiming to have some stuff moving a bit faster, but I need to get some things sorted out first.
Now, I'm back from Conquest of Mythodea, got to meet some nice people (and kill them), and it's back to modelling! I've agreed to take the grots to a tournament the 29th of August. No way they'll be fully painted, but I aim to have all the modelling done for my list.
You can find the list right here, and I've noted what still needs to be done to get it finished. I won't be changing the list build for this tourney, since it's already been sent to the organizer!
1750 points Grot Revolution:
HQ
Warboss, mega armour, bosspole, cybork body: finished
Mekboy, Kustom Force Field, Power Klaw: finished
ELITES
10 Burnaboyz: 6 built, 0 painted
5 Lootas : 1 built, 0 painted
5 Lootas: 1 built, 0 painted
TROOPS
29 gretchin, 2 runtherds: fully painted
18 gretchin, 1 runtherd: 16 grots PIP, runtherd finished
18 gretchin, 1 runtherd: 9 undercoated, 9 to be built, runtherd PIP
5 meganobz, 2x rokkits, 1x skorcha: 4 meganobz finished, 1 PIP
Battlewagon, 2 big shootas, defrolla, boarding plank: finished
FAST ATTACK
1 Buggy squadron, 1 x trakk, 3xrokkits (twin-linked): 1 needs to be built built, 1 track painted, 1 undercoated
1 deffkopta, twin-linked rokkits, buzzsaw: undercoated
1 deffkopta, twin-linked rokkits, buzzsaw: undercoated
HEAVY SUPPORT
3 killa kans, grotzookas: 1 finished, 1 PIP, 1 undercoated
3 killa kans, rokkits: undercoated
Battlewagon, 2 big shootas, defrolla, boarding plank: built, needs to be painted because the tracks can't be attached till painted
So my priorities for the 29th:
get 9 more grots built: easy
get 1 more rokkit buggy built: easy
get the last meganob finished: easy
get 4 more burnagrots finished: difficult
get 8 more lootas finished: difficult
get the battlewagon finished: difficult
get everything painted: impossible!
Looking at it like this, I'm wondering the smartness of my decision to enter the tourney with the revolution . I'm not going to give up hope though - we'll have to wait and see what the next few weeks bring!
