Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but i don't see how they can be unhappy about us monopolizing the kitchen. You'd think they'd welcome 20+ people placing food orders at lunch time, unless that is, they're rubbish cooks and can't handle the pressure :(

Should have been a bit clearer on some things:

For those who have never been to WHWorld, Bugmans is next to the gaming hall and has a small kitchen. On the other side of Bugmans through a 'no entry to the public' sign is the staff canteen (I ate there a few times when I worked for GW). This place is really big and its here that they cater for GTs and the like.

Bugmans are not happy because if we order 2 dozen meals it means no public will be able to order anything for over an hour (makes no sense as we are public but hey ho)
The other tournament going on that weekend is booking the staff canteen (you can do this at the weekends because there's not many staff in the factory/design studio/admin etc.) so if we choose we can eat with them but they get to pick what food's on as they are a bigger group (about 50).
If we book pizzas/buffet food this will also be served in the canteen but will need to be ordered and paid for in advance so I will need to collect money from people fairly soon. The up-side is we can pick what we want and eat when we want.

OK, just looked at the numbers - for 16 pizzas (12" deep pan), 10x bowls of spicy potato wedges, 10x bowls of chips and 10x salad bowls (does that sound right for 25 people?) it would come to £7 each.

I am yet to decide which hotel to book so if anyone can recommend a convenient, safe, well located one with comfort more important than price, then please do post some info

@Lego: I stayed in the Premier Inn when i went to the BB GT last month. It's about 15 mins walk from WW or a 3 min drive. It costs about £50 for a double room

Taxi ranks and minicab offices are the way, not flagging one down. But if you're anywhere vaguely near the centre of town you shouldn't have a problem.

When I'm working there I usually get booked into the Park Plaza, in the town centre, which is as nice as any new, decent, mid-price hotel (i.e better than a Holiday Inn), but comes in at around £90 per night. There's also a very good one in the lace market. However, since I'm paying for it myself this time, I think I'll be going down the Holiday Inn route myself....

theres alot of dogey unlicensed ones around so i would not recommend flagging one down

Now that you have secured a landing zone, you must push outwards to try and claim key locations in the surrounding country. It is important to preserve your best units for the campaign ahead, but any opportunity to rob your enemies of such units must be taken!

Primary Mission: After the players have picked their deployment zone but before any units are placed, each player, beginning with the first, must take it in turns to place 2 objective markers each in no-mans land. The markers may not be placed within 12" of a board edge or another marker. These objectives are captured as per normal rules (non-vehicle troop choices within 3")

Headquarters Raid.

As you press forward, the battle lines draw closer and you find yourself in striking distance of the enemy's forward base. Now is the time for a surgical strike to disrupt enemy command.

Primary Mission: After the players have picked their deployment zone but before any units are placed, each player, beginning with the first, must select a terrain feature in their deployment zone to be their forward base (see special rules). Each base is worth 8 BPs if controlled. If a base is contested or has no units in it, both players gain 4 BP each.
Secondary Mission: Before the game begins, you must declare which HQ unit in your army has the highest Ld value - this is your army commander (see setup and special rulesbelow). If two or more HQ units have the same Ld, the controlling player must choose one of them to be the commander. If you kill your opponent's commander you gain 2 BPs. If your commander survives you gain 2 BPs. Retinues have no effect on earning these BPs, the commander him/herself must die! Special Rules:
Dawn Raid: Turn 1 is played using the "night fighting" rules. Roll a dice at the beginning of turn 2 before reserve rolls are made. On a 1-3, night fight is still in effect, on a 4-6 units can see normally. From turn 3 onwards all units can see normally.
Forward Base: Each side has a forward base, chosen before deployment. Your units are familiar with the base and never consider it difficult or dangerous terrain. You control your base if you have any troop units in the base and no enemy units. You control the enemy base if you have any troop or elite units in the base and no enemy units.

Does that mean your commander can't start in a transport? Or can you place a troop transport on your base and auto embark him?

does that mean scouts with all the bumff , and reinforced terrain have a 1+ invunerable (i know 1 is allways a fail but still could get nasty , flamers out for the lads)

@Araksi - yes, your commander can start embarked on a transport - but only if the transport can actually fit in the terrain feature you choose as your forward base.

@Battlecannon it phil - yes, you can technically get a 1+ cover save, but as you point out a 1 is always a fail so you get a 2+ cover save - its tough but Eldar Pathfinders get this just for sitting in a ruin in any normal game.

Does that mean it is possible for a dedicated transport to show up from reserves by itself if its contents are still on the board? (and vice versa I suppose)

Also - I take it troops (includind dedicated transports) recycled from reserve will be tallied for kill points each time they are destroyed. (Take that IG blob!)

Hi guys, sorry I've been in a field for a few days (long story)...

@mercer, yes everyone will get mission packs within the next 2-3 weeks

@notprop, kickoff is 10am (when the doors open) for registration. I'd like the first game to start by 10:30 so we can make sure we're not pushed for time later in the day

@croggy, spectators are fine (a couple of people have mentioned wives/girlfriends so they can all get together and collectively roll their eyes while we play with toy soldiers )

and for everyone's benefit (this will be stated in the mission packs anyway), yes, you'll need to bring at least 2 copies of your army list. It doesn't have to be printed but it must be legible and must have details of ALL wargear. You will (or should) know the basic kit for every unit in your army but you can't assume that everyone else has read that codex, so please note stuff down to avoid the 'I didn't know they had xxxx wargear' arguments...

Cool about time and bollocks about WYSIWYG. My Guard are proxing grenade launchers as meltas, that's it - surely that wouldn't be a issue as only minor. My Eldar are all fine I believe. I'll be bringing either of those btw, not bringing CSM any more. Btw it's only a single unit I'm proxying, other unit does have actual meltaguns.

Just a quick question about Sunday - what time are things starting, and what will be going on? It is not covered (as far as I can see) in the info pack

Far as I can tell, sunday is arrange your own.

There are no specific arrangements for sunday.

The 'formal' tournament will be completed on saturday, but sunday has been left so that people can make their own arrangements (probably on saturday night in the bar )

Damn, I'm not going to be in the bar on Saturday night, so I will have to pimp myself out for a game or two on Sunday at some point during the day

As per PM I sent a few days ago I'm going to have to take Orks due to bitz not arriving for my Guard army to make it full WYSIWYG. Orks are all ok to rock and roll though

@croggy - the boards at WHW are 6' x 4' and already have terrain on them. I'll be there early (their event liaison is letting me in before opening time) so I'll check the boards and make sure that there is enough terrain and its placed fairly.

When the boards are setup, the terrain will be left in place for the rest of the day and I'll try and make sure nobody plays on the same board more than once.

As for the other arrangements for Sunday, personally my favourite format is doubles. We don't have to set anything up rigidly or anything (like tourney format) but if people can grab an ally I'd love to get some doubles games going.

There is another event on the same day, so there'll be people registering for that. I'll have to try and make up a sign and keep out of the way - so look for a Billy-no-mates with a laptop when you get there

Looking at Mercers army im afraid for my painting skills (and playing skills frankly)

I played WH when i was 16, joined the marines shortly after, then didnt pick up a paintbrush again till i was 28 when i left!

Its my first painted army.. they are supposed to be Ultramarines but they look like Scousers in loud garish shell-suits.

Certainly does mate. I was hammering my Guard but pieces still haven't turn up so Orks it is. So I've rushed to paint the bases make my home made Big Mek look better and get the Wagons sorted.

Though, I'm play testing tonight and may take foot sloggers which means that list may change!

gak! Bases! Gonna need to do some last minute rebasing of Keepers to get them on 60mm bases. They're old Keepers, so they came on 40mm square bases, but currently they're on 40mm round.

The Fiends are staying on Cavalry bases, since that's what they came with, which makes it legal.

The Daemon Prince is a conversion from an Avatar, and at the time i built him, Daemon Princes came on 40mm round bases. But with the release of the new plastic Daemon Prince, do I have to rebase them on 60mm too?

Yeah, same here. I just don't have the time to finish everything! My deathkoptas are only undercoated, one trukk-boy squad is only basecoated, and my 3 trukks are only base coated. Everything else is done.

I've almost finished painting. Only had 9 full models and 6 weapons/arms to paint but I spent all last night painting (about 4 hours) and still did not get them done

Aww it's a real shame that everyone won't have painted armies, I'm bringing my camera to get some great shots for write-ups

I plan to finish off my stuff this evening. Though I don't have great painting skills, at least there will be some (diseased) colour to be seen

I've got all my models painted. Got objective markers too

Well, this will be my last post on this thread. I am starting a new thread in the 40k Battle Reports section giving a rundown of the tournament.

My final thanks have to go to all the guys who turned up and made it a really enjoyable day. It was great to meet you all in person and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves on the sunday.

Thanks also to the guys from GW who were friendly and helpful and whos hard work in setting up the venue before we arrived made for a much smoother running of the event.

Warhammer World was amazing! the GW staff there were great, helping out by finding us army trays and anything else we needed.
Much money was spent of FW stuff and a few extras.
Nottingham itself was pretty cool, the hotel staff showed us around the caves under the Pub!

ArbitorIan TitanPrincepts and I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who sat and shared a drink and a chat with us.

If I had to leave a positive critique of the weekend.
Is that the only real problems were getting the games to fit in the times especially fighting people that were slow and didn't know the rules too well.
Even if you could fight it really fast then you were unlikely to get passed the fourth turn.

I think the quote of the sunday, repeated by so many people, "is that the goal of today is that we see a game to the finish".

As a suggestion for next time, if we have a weekend we should use it and give every game a chance to be finished properly even if your oppenent is a little slow on the rules. This way you don't go away feeling like if you had been able to have those 2 more turns it would have been such a different result.

The second day was much better for me, fewer games but better more competitive players with closer faught battles.

Twas a great weekend, with lovely people. It was good to put faces to names (and try and remember REAL names) and I managed to avoid the £1 beer long and lose games simply by being stupid rather than drunk.

Today was great though, lots of time to play bigger games at our leisure.

If there were any criticisms (and these really AREN'T criticisms - I had a fantastic weekend and a great set of games), then...

- I found the scoring a bit complex. It may just be that I'm not used to properly organised tournaments, but I was always surprised by the actual score at the end of the game.

- A lot of people didn't get past turn 3. Party this was time, but we also DID have a huge number of horde players. Half our players brought Guard or Orks, so 75% of the games would have featured one BIG army. I think, if the army selections had been balanced more, this may not have been as big a problem.

But yes, I'll go through my crappy photos this eve and see what I've got. A great weekend all round, though.

Ceorron - our game (my only) on Sunday was easily the most enjoyable one I had the whole weekend - closely fought, ebbing and flowing with each turn, a tactically interesting game of elite Mech Orks trying to wrest their supply dump back from an entrenched rival Ork horde (Battle Missions: All-round Defence) against a challenging opponent.

This is definitely not a poor reflection on my opponents on Saturday - I enjoyed playing each and every one of you. But I couldn't get a game past turn 3 (or turn 2 in two games) - and none of my opponents were slow or didn't know the rules - and hopefully I didn't fall into either category either!

I blame everyone for not popping AV10 Trukks before they hit their lines, KFF or not, for shame! Close combat just takes a long time - and I don't want to rush my opponents, especially as I'd prefer more time to think in some (hopefully not too many!) cases... (As it happens, I think Ketara gave up working out what I was rolling for, and just let it happen - could have saved me time explaining all my rolls!)

I had a great weekend. I put faces to many Dakkites I have (and haven't) come across in my time on Dakka - and four games made sure I had more social interaction than a simple introduction. All the armies I saw were excellent. If anything, my regret is not catching up with more of you - but that is what follow on events are for I guess!

I was glad that MattyRM, Albatross, Battlecannon it Phil, a Corair-impersonator, Taloncab and myself all gave the reputation of our homeland of Middlesbrough good representation. Started drinking at half ten on £1/pint after having only eaten an apple Danish, managed to last the whole day and then inadvertently started stealing from each other!

Gratz also to Simon for organising a day at WHW and organising it well - it could easily have gone over time!

time wasnt a problem for any of my games , made turn 5, 5, 8, and 3 (opponent was dead ) every game finished to end. time for matches was fine for me , some people just play slow.

I would be interested in what you played and played against, including approximate model counts, for comparison - as well as the number of assaults

Actually, the number of turns played by everyone, compared against the above statistics, would also be interesting. One hour allows 5 mins for setup, and 5 mins per turn each for a 5 turn game...

Maybe there should be prizes for most and least turns played

How was your opponent dead in turn 3 of the last game? All their troops would be in reserve for turn 4 and 5!

I only had 1 game not finish fully, the 1st one (ran out of time at end Turn 3), with Taloncab, but I don't think either of us was any slower than the other -- I think we were both just kind of warming up / waking up, and were playing at typical friendly local game place (I've certainly never played to a time limit before).

I was playing guard (best painted ) , and played against
grotts , ravenwing, mech chaos, mech chaos

@ Battlecannon it phil - You played me in the second game, not the third - I lost the third game 20-0 to Talon Cab so I remember

I should add - it is quite possible I am just slow and in denial - I'm sure knowing will be beneficial, if not flattering, for the future! Glad I am such a slow modeler and painter that a horde army was out of the question (Mech Orks, 34 models, at least deployment and first turn - 5 models - was quick...) I think in hindsight, SilverMK2 and I would have had time for turn 3 (10 mins was called during turn 2, so we finished there) - but I doubt it would have affected the outcome (I think we would have both added a second unit into each others' deployment zones...)

I played 5 games total over the weekend, reslting in 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. So overall, a more than satisfactory conclusion.

I can only echo everyone elses sentiments, great weekend! Thanks to Simon for organising things.

To my opponents my apologies, I definitely fell into the slow horde category, but I like to think the way I bleed points more than made up for it . Plus my thanks to them for being rather cool about my sketchy grasp of the mechanics; 5th edition really is differants from 2nd ed, who knew?

Everyone was really sound but special mentions for the following Dakkaites;

Alb and Matty: for services to drinking

Ben (Ketara) : for making the car journey pass quickly and interestingly and being the only person to loose to me all weekend (at pool incidently), good work fella.

Panic: Kan Wall, I will kill that last one next time!

ArbitorIan: Demons, that was an eye opener! (and indeed spleen opener for so many of my troops!). Great game on sunday, It was nice to finish a game at last and discuss squats with a fellow devotee. I expect to see at least a Gyrocopter if not a Land Train soon!

Legoburner: Its good that the site is in the hands of such a sound person and some interesting rumours too

Thank you mate sentiments returned. Fantastic game. Some amazing, unbelievable moments. So sentiments returned. One I will remember.

Oh and BTW you could maybe go a little faster, especially if your opponent knows orks pritty well.

My second battle of that day against SilverMK2 was increadable aswell. Just as close faught and even more bloody and brutal. I will have to play both of you again someday get a rematch and see how the armies have changed/improved.

So yeah second day made it more than worth while, exceptional.

they looked truely awesome . also i got to play him before he was completely wasted so er ........ well that was nice

ian for letting me play against deamons (well proper deamons) for the first time - and damn was i on the back foot - great theme to the army also

and last but not least our champion Yiawchuah for also my first game against space wolves (well black and red chinese space wolves ) also a whole new experience for me - and many many lessons learnt

great games - great people - cheap beer - and a life sized space marine - mix them together and you have an instant orgasm

They can't fight though, this is because I sent my force commander on Gok Wans "how to look good naked" instead of sending him to a fortress monastery to train.

Oh and my chaplain was busy at a wedding.

On a serious note, I didn't use my psychic hood once all day, I hardly ever fired the vindicator, and I sent my terminators on a sightseeing tour during my last game!
