in a way they could look like jetengines. theses green type of engine bodys will be for vertical uplift so rotors will be pointing upwards. the bigger and sideways looking rotor for forward propulsion will look a bit like:

necromunda alwasy sound good to me. from what i could gather its more my kind of play anyway. small skirmishes...thats what i like for computer games...
i think you should definatly post some of your pics here now that i saw them...the details... i still see that seat before me....brilliant...maybe i should nick that look for some bridge designs as well...
so fellas i leave you all unfinished, as it is well past my bedding time, good night to all of you, see you when the sun is crwaling abck upon this sphere...
hmmm i have since yesterday mounted the deck for good on th blimp...now it seems a very important problem to solve how the underside will be used and also since i cant/wont use actual jets to keep it aloft, how to keep it from falling over^^...
so cabins might help stabilizing and making a kind of foot for the whole thing....but to be honest i think it wont do. so since you have seen it often in pics what should i do? i still hav the parts for the cabins. and the tau weaponsponsons as well...which begs kind of to be used^^...
what about making a base in the shape of a shadow of the airship , with plenty of anchors and ladders hanging down to , support it along with a large broom handle , cut down obviously as the structure for it. you could even keep the lower half of the broom , just cut away the bristles. alternatively you could weld it with steel, although i have never welded , then it would be very strong!
i´ve thought about something similar although i recently bought myself a bit of plexiglas, dont know an english word for it. i have some rods of clear glasslike plastic material. rectangular shaped...these could provide the support.
have you just skethced that picture up? cool...the aft anchor chain could also be used for support if done firm enough...
really i thik your sketch looks *rrrrrraw* i like it a lot!
and i like your idea with the drag marks from the anchor...thats realy realism like.
did you do it with carbon pencils? sorry dont know the right word in english again...
to be honste you pic is close to putting my construction to shame...*sobs*^^
Aye ," points to sig" a square base would be safer, and you could still have the shadow if you wanted? but dont forget it looks pretty heavy , oooh just had athought
@ vik just pencil yes , i think i might do some sketches of your airshp actually, will be fun. and maybe some victorian graphics to go with them , , " JOIN UP the AIR SERVICE " sort of thing!
the last one i had tested personaly and they are utter crap to be frank, i wnated a tripod for my cam and i saw that in the shop and thought: well thats nice and manly looking i should buy that... no sir thank you sir its nonsupportive in every respect. and your first choice would clearly support the victorian fluff....but....but...but i just see myself walking in a FLGS for a friendly game or two and building the airship to its full proportions for a game and then the other peeps looking at my tripod (again i think i use way to much sexual double entendres...) and i cant imagine them saying something like: "whoa waht a cool idea using that as a support for that awful model...i think it would ruin my day in a way...LMAO^^
yeah i thout they were a bit of a stretch, but the last one looks like tesla coils, very steampunk, maybe you could use it for wour weapon or a steampunk titan war of the worlds tripod style, that would look cool! a tripod titan comming at you accross a game table, manned by pretorians! , OOhh i might just do that myself one day...... well if you dont want to that is. although i do have plenty to work on at the moment.
ahaha, did i read you there correctly? again i see that word titan and in direct realtion to the man neil...coincidence? ha! i say the nay...
do you know what these gorilla grip tripods costs? my eyes went blurry after i saw the price tags for it...tho i have to give you that it would look tesla like...and as for tripod lokking walkers...hmmm dont know if they would fit in with prxeans, but you never know until you´ve tried...
i have optained some weeks ago an AT-RT walker from starwars and will convert it to a sentinel like walker...steampunky like...
i´ve seen many tripod walkers in steampunk tho due to my research. i can show some up here if you like...tho there not mine and personaly i like the bipod look more, nevertheless its classy to walk with three legs, as in war of the worlds...
cant argue with wells...he got the power...
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: LOOOOOL, i was just typing that...
Automatically Appended Next Post: as much fun it is staying up with the lot of you i need some minutes of sleep on a daily base so i want to get me some sleep now and you sir should too^^
at neil, my deepest condolences for going to the dentist...hate doing that...apinfull to endure and painful in payment too...
at chibi, had a look into the range of lead adventures...and i have to say i love the look of the Deep Dive Day...a superb engenieer and the diver is classy as hell...a diver with a fishbowl helmet and a flamethrower, cant get manlier than that i guess...
cool find, and you dont have to pay through your nose to get them... saw lots of steampunkish items a lot more expensive than these. if i ordered this pair i would pay about 10€s and thats not so harsh a price...
done that a fair share of times when i was about 10 years old. went together with my grandma...was told by the dentist that boys dont cry and that stuff...if some bugger would pull that stunt on my children...well he would be pleased to see all his tools tested for functions...
Dentist was painless ,physically and monatary thanks to our FLAWED DIAMOND National Health Serrvice, and although i dont get any money for being unemployed , my health care and the childrens is free... phew ! but thanks for the sympthies lol did some xmas shopping today, picked up a 3 plastic sledges today for the boys, water proof boots for me , some ,perfume for the fiance, handy modeling tools , pin vice guitar wires clippers, fun times ahead! sorry off topic ;-)
i saw them minis as well guys , they look very good, there are some others i found as well , will post a link , in a bit, hope your not too snowed in.
you guys are so lucky. Here in bedfordshire we get about 2" of snow if we're lucky. the most snow we've had in a century happened january- 6". Wow. We have no snowdays I just want 4" of snow for a week. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! anyways, back on topic, looking good! The offer's still up for me making rules...
that is one nice zeppelin! I think there should be an ork one, like in the fluff...with the goff rockers on top...with a banner saying "led zeppelin"...
anyway- I don't want to be snowed in, just 6" or so per year (During school, of course).
no seriously it looks absolutly cool, and your weapons look really good. nice fit in with the praetorians...i´m constantly thinking of buying me a force of them ...from wagames tho...the are quite cheap if i buy them from the brit ebay...
back to the snow discussion this thread has taken over:
i reporting from germany of todays snow madness here in my home turff...
today i wanted to opt for quickness and used the bike to bring one child to the kidergarten and later that day i brought two back home with it...that was the plan...
first biking on snow is something not for the faint of heart...or the ones that are afraid when the bikes slinger around quite a bit. guess what type i´m? when it comes to transport i´m a total wussy... i was so afraid that i had to take a part of the ride to push the bike with one kid on top of it through our local park...was a bit of a walk to say the least...
you have to see the amount of snow we have...our snow has thawed and then frozen anew...so now we see lots of snowplates broken and shoveld to the sides of the streets...nice for all involved...pedestrians forgetting what bikestreets are for and happily walking with closed eyes wherever takes them their fancy... where is my baseballbat when i need some? man i hate stubborn people that always rely on the thought that i have to change path...??? why always me? do i look like a serial-to be-kicked- idiot? dont answer that one...argh... *slops some cold hahaha water in face*
now back to airships that soar way above clouds, snowy clouds that is...
i dont know but i seem to lost a bit of enthusiasm the last two days. or rather i´m a bit still at aloss of ideas for the engines... i think i will move to other constructionsites of the airship and maybe there i will make progress...hopefully i can do something on weekend but i highly doubt that...who knows...
maybe i will work on a base for the ship so that i can mount it and thus have a bit of a way to see where this thing will take me...
at shrike, must have overlooked your offer for making rules for it, feel free to add waht your up, but remember that it will be of royal navy, so no orks involved...^^^
okay then- what role do you want your zeppelin to have? gunship? transport? mobile objective? airbourne aircraft carrier? scenery/gun platform for your guys to shoot off? bit of everything?
hey! how about rappelling lines! your guys stylishly clamber down on ropes! sound good? what points range? what force org slot? So many questions must be asked...
do i get this right? a bucket full of british soldiers? the image i have in my mind looks...cant describe it, your serious or do i am having one of these translations moments here?
No, I meant a more "dignified" basket or "bucket" like a hot air balloon bucket lowered or raised on a winch, it could be made to look metallic, to protect them as it is raised or lowered on large winches. one or two per side, big enough to land a squad each.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Instead of rapelling Praetorians.
I was not mocking, I was making a valid suggestion that I felt would fit the way he wants to go.
No right minded Praetorian would ruin or muss his uniform by rapelling, very undignified, but lowered in an armored basket with a drop door would be so much more their style. Lowered in a stately manner so to speak.
only joshing Shas
too good an opportunity for a bit of rubbish satire.
The buckets are being used to help fight the fires in North Israel.
The idea of baskets sounds good to me
They could have slits for firing through as they are lowered
Don't ask about accuracy as it swings in the airstream!
hmmm i will be giving that bucket idea a night to sleep over with...heck IIRC i think i have some parts that would fit the bill....argh have to do the base tommorow then i can think straight for that idea...
chibi your a laugh^^ at first i actually thought you dug a genuine pic up of a landing bucket, then i scrolled further and i saw the firebucket... LMAO...
shrike had the idea of parachutes but they are not really my taste...makes them so damn sporty...not what i had in mind...
they would loose much glamour that way, same with roping i guess...
whats with rope ladders? would that also be too ungentlemanlike?...
Hmm, rope ladders are slow way to deploy, and too vulnerable to being shot at! The baskets could even be lowered raised from the belly area if one wanted. Shooting slits, and also the chance to be just big enough for some chairs to sit, sip tea, and or read the daily journal while their comrades take shots at the enemy like a sport hunter would, fitys very much in my book!^^
ah the possibilites thats offering...
athought just came across my mind...: what about a strawlike pipe for decending troops in, extendable... and with antigrav thingys in it...woulod loose a lot of fun then but easy to build i guess and also could help to support the structure...
ah now i got the joke...yep that would indeed make the quennie not amused to see her finest being smashed on the ground due to dues unpaid...
also gives a whole new meaning to the term terminal deployment...
Ilike the idea of the baskets, or landing bunkers, that are lowered to the battlefield , bristling with guns, pretorians /mordians running out the back bayonets attatched! very immaginative and different. like a steampunk, beach landing craft , from ww2. If your gonna do a anti grav field then halo's covenant ships do the very well, a base is lowered down via a anti grav lift for vehicles and then troops can descend via the grav lift also.
I had this image in my head last night and did a quick pencil drawing this morning.
Just inked it up a tad to see if it will show better
Am trying to think head to a Steampunk Group Build
I had no idea what the pipes were for and assumed anti-grav.
(Something has to make this lump of metal above the clouds )
stubborn victorian willpower will hold it up the clouds...
no seriuosly, i wish i was able to sketch/draw like you...
that too is a very good looking airship.
i thought of some landing pipes...well actual pipes really, steelclad ones with rivets...and in regular intervals you have small devices that could be used as antigrav engines...this said it asks one question chibi kind of answered... i could go the full monty and declare the uplifting methode to be just as well antigrav...but would steamppowered antigrav be thinkable? i know fantasy and creativity has now boundaries but would you nod in aprovement for that?
hmmm...
also totaly go for a steampunk project chibi...a new oportunity to nick ideas from^^
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: also at neil, the halo pics i think show what would be used if i was able to make interiors... i think at that built it isn´t doable... but nevertheless they sho the general idea i had to a very close point...
mmm like the pic Chibi , very studio ghibli .. or the last exile. more of a giant sci fi ww2 warship. nice addition of antigrav tubes and vehicles just off flight deck as well. its very big
so is the extendable straw deployment confirmed to be the method of disembarking?
(had an idea for my imagined ork zeppelin- make the sraws bendy and fire snotlings outof them! Giant shokk attack gun!
i could imagine grots lining up like kids awaiting their turn on the water slide a the water park ,Orks herding them in , " ere ya go , snotgrot , its a ver fun sliiidy riiide! Jump in now , ere old dis ice cream ," But boss int dat a Bang bomb....whysit ticking ... "er, never mind dat hold it tight . " WEEEEEEEEE"
heh heh heh. I crack myself up. heh heh heh.
hmm. I might so a paper mache of a long balloon, put plasticard plating on it, and hey presto! Anyone got any ideas of how to make a quick cheap zeppellin?
PVC would work. Get some 4' PVC, two lengths of four feet and attach a platform between them. Build a superstructure at the back and place 1' PVC smokestacks, two on either side of the structure. Use some FW landing pads and attach some AA guns for defensive use. Have a landing strip of course. I would have a poopdeck in the back on top of the superstructure and another 2' PVC with engine glow/bitz set below the superstructure with a plasticard structure around it. Have lots of fins and that kind of regal ship look to the curves. I'd then install an additional bombardment cannn under the vessel.
nice thank you again^^ shattered soul, Schauen Sie wieder mal rein^^
the deployment is still an issue i try to figure out. had a lazy (familiy related) weekend in concerns of working on the airship...went a little wild on ebay.uk and purchased some models you will see in some time in one of my then starting blog to feature army building...
for now i´ve checked some materials to be used for a pedestal, but i think i have to get some more materials as what i have for now wont do alone to support the rather heavy structure. i cant answer the question as how heavy that airhip is curtrently, as we dont own some scales for weighing it...
the plexiglas rods i´ve gor are long enough but i only got two of them and i want to support at least to axis of the ship nit just one so it might be for now in danger of falling to one side when not taken with utmost care...that would kill the point of actually playing with it...
so i hopw tommorrow will bring me an oportunity to actually build the base...
after that i literally have room for tjought to think of a means of deployment...
sorry dude i ruled the parachute idea out as it would speak against my (not really psted here but still thought out) fluff...
the bucket and also the antigrav tunnel/pipeline are my most favored ideas...
nahhh, that would look a bit to much like that wuss frodo taken around by a giant eagle... , my oldest son suggested the use of rockets on backpacks...but to be honest i said i dont want my victorian force not to look like orc boys...
Automatically Appended Next Post: and as for the cyborg part, well this should be acomplished then by steampowered engines on the back of a IG? weel there not 10feet tall superhumans the are just smartly dressed john does like you and me^^
Kind of complicated but... Start with the stormboys kit. Trim off the dakka (define as you please.) Use the sprue bitz to glue the body of the rocket wide enough to place a guardsman in. Basically, you're extending the width of the rocket. Leave the bottom as that's your thrust. most tank kits and some others have handles like would be used for a handle on an mg. Take the handles and convert the guardsmen's hands to hold them. End result looks like an open one man drop pod witht the gurdsman controlling it as it lands.
your idea has a certain ring to it...i will give it some more thought...
at shrike...jep, i like that series...even better than simpsons and the opener is always something amusing to look...and i really envisioned it that way so...hmmmm....
ah do not tempt me...i am in it for better or worse...
actually the gentleman thing would be to use landing skiffs like in return of the jedis... but this wot happen either as i dont want to build them...well now anyways...argh this would be really the right thing to do...damn...
Automatically Appended Next Post: yep an orc one would be also a very good one...and you could get lots of reference shots from WOW, in ogrimar they are a sight to see^^
have you ever seen Treasure Planet? It was a sci-fi adaptaion of Treasure island. The Cyborg in that movie would be a great steampunk captain model for your airship if you could do it. Think he'd take a lot of GS.
ow saw that and also loved the book...a classy one...
do you by chance might hunt for a pic of him?
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: so lads and ladys im off now to bed, as its tomorrow st niklas day here in germany and i have to prepare some boots to stuff with toys and sweets to honor the kids cleaning work with their boots...
One does hope they are not too too gentlemanly, for they would never disembark from the dirigible airship.
"After you."
"No, after you."
"Please, I insist after you."
"You are too kind but humility demands I simply must defer to your priority in entering the deployment tubularity dispension shaft."
and so on and so forth.
at BAN thats sounding truly british i have to say, well as much as my understandng of british culture could makle me understand anyway...
at chibi...and the rest of the drawing world...
would someone be so kind as to make a short comic strip of this mentioned short scene? i wuld love to have it on my wall...that is the essence of "priceless..."
gentleman like way of not fighting a war...
this vid just proves a fact that rap actually CAN contain contens...and not be utter rubbish...
tho i´m more a earl grey type of drinker and not assam i am fully bought on this song...might be also of the fact of that rather disturbingly redhead inthe vid...quite a disatraction...
and also lots of steampinkish reference shots there....
and thanks draglide, quite the cinastic pose of the captain stand in....this will come in handy later...
so now i´m off as the clothes need hanging....argh i´m a slave to the household...poor soul that i am...
will post pics tomorrow, have undergone some serious riveting on the boiler, looks cool, but is far from completed...
and i am working on bulking out the hull of the upperdeck...then i still want to saw out the base for the airship and try to mount it...on the base i mean...^^
Been watching your thread for a while even before joining Dakka, and I have to say, you're taking an enormous undertaking, und du tunst unglaublich on it. Even gave me the idea to do miniature zeppelin Deffkoptas for my orks.
Something you'll want to think about for the engine, though, is how the power tranfers, and how it will look. A lot of pipes may sound like it would be cool, but unless you do it just right, and have really good looking pipes, it could easily end up a mess. What I'd suggest, is connect the boiler directly to a very large piston, which is connected to a large wheel, which has belts and pulleys coming off it, going into the airship and out to the propellers. Belts are a great way to make things look Steampunk, and are really easy to do.
i have long thought about the powertransfer anvil, and i have thought too that a big wheel is the way to go...iam still planing as to how to do it...the only dornpart will be its getting a bit crowded on the deck...i am torn between putting up a big gun on the maindeck or having defence weapons in the cabins that still should be placed beneath the blimp...also the discussion left me thinking of the means of onloading soldiers to the field...skiffs vs futurama pipes...thus the place will be defined of how much there is to make authenic looking powertrasnfer thingies...
all these thoughts hamper a bit my progress you people see i cant show now^^...
but rst assured this thing has costed me so much already in hours and money that it will get completed...
i think that you have to sho us your defcoptas when done anvil, the concept of small vessels is also on the schedule for this project...
hello Draglide12 ,
your right a vessel like that should be bustling with crew...unfrtunatly i dont own suitable models atm...anyone know any good gw or maybe easy to get of other company models?
and i will go for two styles just like in the old days when warships ruled the waves... i will ahve a naval/sailor looking type of mini that will be created from catachan and fantasy imperial models and also a soldierlike marine looking type that will be built and modeled mostly from cadian models...and whatever i can get hold of,...some praetorians are in discussion to be brought by santa, but nothing sure here...
so these discussions aside for a few moments i want you all show you some updatepics on my work of riveting on the boiler....note that these rivets are the smalles size of my wholepunch and are a lot smaller in size than the ones i made for the floar riveting...
this is a work i have done with quite some care yet i think i used a little to much pva glue on the cardboard. but i fugered that after it is cured and coated and then painted it will actually look a bit like solderingmarks...what do you think? and also look close to the pics and tell me where i still need to put lots of rivets. i know for sure some areas i will be up-riveting but i think there is also a good possibility i might have not noticed something...
so here is without much further ado the riveting:....
notice the bird perspective shot...i added since last update some soon to be looking metalstrips on the mainbody...
also note that the here still wet looking pvaglue will set almost unseeable and way thinner than now...
well please leave some comments and critics as i truly look forward in reading that from you as it makes this job a bit easier for me...
The boiler looks pro - is that a hot chocolate drink tin?
The whole thing is well researched and steam funky. Love the organ pipe arrangement - looks like the engineer could play a tune on it.
thanks mates, the mainbody of the boiler is made from a capucino tin...choclate at that so the point is for you weety^^.
thanks for the praise...
does one of you have some hints on what to add on the boiler though? i strongly think it isn´t done jet, also i think it could look in parts a bit busy as it is, but then again my view of steampunk is looking rather busy...^^
in a few moments i will post a gathering of unpainted troops...zthe minis i have for now, notcounting the myriads of things still on the mailways to come to the folds...
vik for now...
Automatically Appended Next Post: and back again for the steampunky ting...(gathering of troops...could be called victorian ting as well^^)
here in the following pics you see what the major parts of the army will consits of. not to be seen here but there is three heavy weaponsteams on sprue, a imperial fantasy heavy canon...
so here it is and i will post some leaks about what they will be used as...
by the way does one of the readers of this thread now a pinter for IGs like the SM painter from bolter and chainsword?
so here comes the pics...:
command HQ on the airshipbridge^^ and some guardsmen from cadia...
some Warzone minis i´m not sure wether i should include them and then as what as my karskin/stormtrooper will be original scout SM...
lots and lots of catachan fighters...some in very poor condition...here will be a major part of work to convert them...some will be certainly be converted as sailors...well the short sleeved look says sailor to me...
some catachan snipers...
some minis i think looks good in the mids of the catachans....probably sergants material here...anyone knows the minis? company?
40 heads with gasmasks and the famous soupbwolhelmet of the WWII...lots of headchops to do...they will get painted white...a bit of a modern take on the praetorian look i want to create by that....
again a troop of cadians with a commsiar and a partisan women^^... the cadian helmet will also be looking white when painted...
close up of the partisan female and the first comissar...i think i have to seriously out do myself for him as i want to have him look real sharp...
well thats for now, forgott two halfling snipers...and i am toying with an idea that involves some eldar minis...two eldar wraith lords are in the mail and also some last chancers will be joining the force i persume in time to the new years eve...
thanks again for stepping by and please comment like hell...also i think as i´m not that used to naming british forces i would herby open the discussion of naming my force...i do know that the up until now spilled fluff isn´t very supportive but well...i had little room to think up more...but will do so in the next weeks...
I'd suggest sticking as many of the weapons as possible 'belowdecks', on the bottom. The only thing you'd want on top would be anti-aircraft batteries, and you don't need many of them.
When it comes to being 'crowded', I'd say think about where you put the helm. You've done a lot with it for the top, but it might be better to instead have it on the underside of the bow. If you're going to have it on top, well, go ahead. Just something to think about.
For the engine and boiler, well... That's just it. You don't have the 'Engine' yet, just the boiler. That's like the petrol-tank for a car. It's where the steam comes from, and then the steam goes to an engine. Then the engine uses the steam for power.
If you can, I'd move the 'exhaust' pipes down a little, and put another, wide, pipe at or near the top of the boiler, that goes to a piston that turns a crank, with a wheel attached; or, a pipe that goes to a turbine. You need some method of transfering the energy, and the extra pipe to take the steam away at the top, along with a pipe to bring water in at the bottom, would help make it look 'busy', without taking too much more room.
try to understand you and i hope i can show some of your suggestions the next few days...you´re right as this is only the tank for the engine so to speak...there will be lots of pipes coming from the boiler and going to its various uses...all forward the engines of propulsion and also to the uplifting omes...you have teamed up with me to use the canbins below first for shooty purpose and also for its helm...also i guess if i do this taht way no one would see it actually as i dont plan on building interiors...hmmm that would be a true loss...would it look greatly stupid to still have the helm on the bridge above the second storey of the building on the deck?...
Hmm, I like the idea of bombardment cannons on the bottom. I think the engine should be next to the boiler and should have LARGE smokestacks off to the side. I agree with the groupshot thing too. I just had inspiration for some special hellions while reading this thread too lol.
They aren't necessarily steampunk, but the blimp inspired some void sails and extended boards. Imagine hellion riders holding on to a mast and shooting a shard pistol with the other hand. Maybe I could make some form of dirigible DE also...
Hey vik , just catching up on your thread , it gets busy if you dont look in often. the boiler is exceptional , 100 times better than i thought it could be. the rivets are amazing , i will deffienately be using that idea from now on. nice to see more of your army as well , the partisan and the commissar are very nice ,and you have some other models i have not seen before. look forward to seeing how your goona put it all together on deck mate . i think that is gonna be a tricky part as you have plenty of ideas! to go with.
who the hell needs official models...scratchbuild them^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: yep, neil always the finger on the wound...i know i tearing myself apart with all the frontlines i´ve opened up...
the thing is i dont want to rush this airship...although i quite sure that this couldn´t be made anyhow...but i do wamt to paint the army too...maybe i should give in for mercy after the airship is built and paint sme minis? instead of painting the actual airship? naaawww...or?
ach decisions, decisions...
and to tell you the truth...everything looks way better if you add rivets to it...
I'd paint a few models before the airship just for a change of pace. I can'r paint marines all day before I get bored and attack my bitz box with glue and a pair of nail clipper lol.
they´re form west wind productions, secrets of the thrid reich...british line of the SHS seperate heads system... they have lots of other style heads...
ah you never now with nazis, zombies and snowmen...always scheming and plotting...have you seriously thought that the recent cold weather fronts are something natural? ??? ah? no there are clever plans underway to get them snowstormtroopers all over europe to storm the last tresholds of the free and literate world to once and for all claim world domination...
look behind you a snowmen is attacking you...
no seriously here are the up to date pics of the fullshot of the airship...boiler HQbridge and a first glimpse of a means of landingear...and under the belly of the blimp the cabins...
full shots...
HQ bridge and boiler iun the back...with little room left for engine gear and stuff...
new landing skiff...with hopefully fully functioning doors/ramps...they will get some blimps as well...
yep thats still a tricky part here, i have some wooden latches soaking in water to later bend to my whim...i should really do it and heat them up then bend them more easyly but i have to do chores and beat up the christmastree and buy gifts for the childreen too...so that keeps me from doing it that way...git some styrofoammattress that also would do the trick after i did that i would plate the hull of the deck later with cardboard and make it look steelplated like the deck...
time is the major problem here, same with that damned base i want to saw...something always keeps coming up to prevent me from actually doing it...even if it is a simple task...
hmm your right master of course, this little padawan just wants to see some progress too...its a bit frustrating to see this big thing and think you will never see it finished...
It is a big project vik, exactly why you shouldn't rush it just to see it finished. There lies the way of burnout. Take your time, enjoy the suspense of the gradual build.
Plus going slow gives you many chances to change things you decide you don't like That's my real reason, honest.
It's really coming together Vik, nice work! so, landing skiffs eh? independent of the bucket or landing straw. heh! will be nice to see what you do to make them look and work.
Oh, wow. You have less space on top than I thought.
From that picture, I'd actually suggest removing the boiler and the command post from the top, and hanging them underneath instead. Any lighter-than-air craft with that much stuff on it would need to have the weight of the boiler, engine and the bulk of that cabin underneath, for stability.
Or, if you really want to keep that stuff on top, either make a second envelope (I know, it'd be a huge undertaking and you probably don't have the material) or else re-do. Make a smaller boiler, and a smaller helm. You can still use the big boiler on something (with as awesome as it is, it'd be a shame to waste it), like a land-dreadnought, something that doesn't need to be lighter than air.
to anvil, i know the airship will look a tad to the humerous or rather unrealistic side. all i can say is that the project evolved and now i have little energy to redo certain things. to place the helm and thus the bridgebuilding and the boiler benaeth the blimp wont happen as this wouldnt look to suit my ideas...i will build certain structures on the underside and also you wull see much more detail there too as for design uses...
i am currently thinking about the two alternative ways of deployment, either skiffs or straw/pipes or even both...skiffs would be more fluffy but with the pipe i would get more stability for keeping it upright...
nurisment of different species totally aside, i finally did what needed to be done and at least glued some odd ends of wood together on a piece of cubboardbackwall...its called mdf here and it is rather thin...the other wooden parts will be the sicking point for the use of poles made from wood (center) and two out of plexiglas...
no that i often had to heave her around i think she will be quite aheavy one...well that would also underline the victorian line too...(hehe)
as you all could now see hte general shape of her plump beauty the discussion for naming her is officially opend by me. for quite some time i thought about the name "damokles" but an inner voice tells me that she is in fact a lady and should be thus named...
on a more organisational side we have to anounce the admittance of one captain Reed, formerly captain of the praetorian army and a fine embodiment of a tank commander, will now be serving within the ranks of the Royal Queens Brigade 101 Airship division.
may the Queen live long and protect us all...
The ship looks great vik, i agree with monkey about taking your time . no need to rush this beauty, you have plenty of other side projects to go to if burnout comes around. although i think you are moving quite fast now. She is Massive , how are you gonna move her. ? the skiffs are a good idea , but why not use the tube and skiffs, the idea of men dropping down a tube or pole like firemen is very cool and original mate. just makes me smile.
as for names here are my suggestions
The girl's name Aeron \
ae-
ron\, also used as boy's name Aeron, is of Welsh origin, and the meaning of Aeron is "battle". The name of the ancient Celtic goddess of battle and slaughter.
Morrigan is probably another version of the same goddess, i considered Morrigan as its more familiar, and she is a more potent deity i think but its a pretty ugly name, lol although i think aeron is a lesser godess derived from arten a goddess of fate of war and battle.
keep the names coming dudes, it is old englisgh, welsh, greek or other celtic languages possible. latin i would rule out as it would sound to warhammer like...rest is whatever you can come up with...
the fireman pole idea is verrrrrrry striking....if i could model it that way i would be very fluffy...

Hah! some friends of mine called their daughter Morrigan... I didn't want to tell them that it sounded ugly.
I used to know a college lecturer called Mike Hunt, for real. No kidding. Everyone called him micheal if they were planning on using his full name, so as not to blush
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just had a thought - does this name fail translate into german? Try saying it really fast and then looking it up in a swear dictionary.
LOL , Mike Hunt , what a Tw@ , and sorry , that bit of info stays in the box entilted " Mother why the feth did you bother, you should have just written fething geek boy instead! and be done with it!, hardly anyone knows my middle name.. and i like it that way he he he

oh man i leave an open thread unmanned for three hours and what do i hve to read here? saucy comments all the way... that´ll teach me to have some free time with the missus in cinema...
i am with all the others, neil spill the beans, we want your middlename...is it moonlight or spirit? LMAO^^
as for Michel Jager...dont see the pun here so Mike Hunt...that tore me to pieces lol...
we have such loling names as ROSA SCHLÜPFER orClaire Grube...wich would translate to pink slip and cess pool...it is in german a useable name tho...if you want to get your kids get beaten up on a daily basis at school...
wait here is another one...:AXEL SCHWEISS meaining underarm perspiration....
on a more serious matter, the names i will collect and then i will probably make a poll to see how polls are done...never done that before on that forum...you live you learn...

Albion might not be a bad idea as she was an assault ship carrying Marines.
this is a very fitting seavessel and shows what i have in mind for the genberal lookout of the airship only a hundred feet above ground...^^
yep i used a fair amount of smallish stripes of ducktape to cover up some gaps between the peaks of the blimp and the body of said thing...this will have to get "painted" with diluted PVA as the ducktape starts to peel off...should have used painters tape instead but i liked the surface of the ducktape for that job too...
and thanks for the boiler compliment^^
i always thought riveting something up is a very nasty piece of work, but all in all it was quite pleasing to do so. its kind of monotone but you have to concentrate and it is rather like some kind of "modeling yoga" you get that wonderfull empty feeling in your head...always thinking:
"now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue...now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue...now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue...now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue...now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue...now another rivet piece...on the needle....put needle to glued spot...leave rivet on the glue... "
thanks for all the kind words, pics will follow, but we are in the deep dark forest of the weekend ...the kids are roaming the workspace so there is no glue or cutters involved...so more heavy thoughts rather...
and chibi, yep zen of modeling...to all, you should see his detail work on a 1:76 scale planes he´s done... then you really know about tweezer controll...

he also decorated the bridge with lil glas gems and some cards from a game...
he is rather the creative one in our offspring and i have high hopes for him...
so without further addo behold the true undiluted creative mind of a four year old boy...something we all hopefully wont have extinguished in ourself...
ouch.....all that hard work to destroy it?....no kidding, would be awsome to blow it up but then i had to make a new one...though it will be mostly serving as terrain...

Actually just noticed the gems , very symetrical, but a bit too Eldar though, but those bears do look a bit like space marines. Imperial Fists, Blood Angels. Ultra Marines and Dark angels spring to mind for some reason....

at neil well that pic i must have overread...seems like someone nicked my ideas beforehand^^
looks mighty similar and i solemny swear i never saw it before^^
well back on topic, made some progress with the major engine for forward propulsion...sponsored by a kind soul namely chibi...
hope you recognize your contribution...
so here bear with me the true engine of destruction^^
made from a cone for playing in the garden, some sprues, an a filter i got god knows where (the blue thing)
hope you like it...there will be a big pipe leading to the boiler to have the steamgenerated engergie go to the engine...i think the idea of having large transportbelts and big wheels is out of the questions due to massive lack of vast areas of available place to spend...
at chibi: nope, cause i bought five sets of these for .10€ each and they were only for MEEEEEE!!!!! ha ungtareful kids these days^^
you like the use i gather? also this is the way i pictured more the use of your straws to be...interlinks of some kind as i did with your sprues...

well that would be a bit like pissing on my own feet...considering that i´m german^^ but your right the name is a good one and the timeline would be also good as for steampunky battleships...
Victorious had a more prestigious war record
Her Barracudas attacked and damaged the Tirpitz keeping her at anchor in Norway
Went east and hit by kamikazes in the Pacific
Was refitted with the first ever angled flight deck and continued on into the cold war era.
Oh and she also played a decisive role in the hunt for the Bismark
You know, your kid might be on to something there with that bridge design.
Yeah, the glass gems are a bit too Eldar, but the crennelated (up and down wall) look at the back, on a low level platform, could be pretty flash if modelled up all Victorianlich.
i guess this would look really good and give the brigde some more posh look thats so victorian...will have a look if i can do that. and my son is very creative and as an eye for patterns that are decorative...
something like that would look good on the steamship, i like the idea of metal iron work and stone bulidings together, and that is very gothic..when i bulit the inquisitorial tower ,i used wooden Dado rail or cornice pannel Decorative Mouldings to add pattern easily .
hey neil thats a good hint who to do it, i saw this on numerous times in the hardwareshop i often go...styro or wood either way would work good and add lots of texture...
we do have to let our children play more...
the things we could find out to see with childrens eyes...
Penyy farthing roughriders lol , what about these mono wheel rough riders like thes
you should have a look at this website if you havent already its really good. http://davidszondy.com/future/war/gyro.htm
hello peeps, your all commitment now^^ cool.
at shrike: your link looks cool, i digested the essence of what you were trying to show me...

them "kugelpanzer"s look nice, saw them on shaso´s blog and the recent kugelpanzer thread as well. i like the idea, but i am not sure for my victorians if this would be the way...also i have bought six imperial pistoliers riders and hope they will be coming soon to present here^^...
tanks, well for the commander...after our recent discussion about the mark V i actually now am kind of in love with the A7V
although it is of german origin it looks for me most fitting for my victorians...
and about the penny farthing...at firt i thought it was about some small coins and some unhealthy winds...but after i googled it i came up with
and your not serious with me...do you really imagine stout Imperial guardsmen pedaling into battle on these things to face a raging horde of orcs or heretics...?

that pic does it no justice...try this:
see? quite victorian...

well, DKoK can engineer thier mounts- why can't Praetorians?
It is fluffly plausible and funny. TBF, you have a giant balloon full of men. And you say bikes are OTT?
ah dont corner me man...on the web i dont have the same posabilities as with my kids as when they dont do my biddings...^^
well just let me say this: the rule of cool...
see your point is invalid as there is nooooo parallel universe yet so small as it might be as their inhabitants would think about a penny farthing to be looked at and see it as cool way of transportation...
i would gladly accept to use hoovers (vacuum cleaners for you colonials out there on that american landmass) as means of transportation than these wheels...

too true, sadly next to never shown in german telly but we saw some in our english classes...made a paper and a presentational comedy play once on british humor and the not being able to translate adequatly in german...as we tend to be too stiff in humor here...
saw lots of benny hill when i was young but his farty humor and so wasn´t my type of humor...like the black british humor more^^
black adder in every instalment is so bad and naughty...also rowan atkinson is the best...just dont like is mr. bean stuff as i think its rather poor...he could do better...
seems after i read something about these books of him that i should try to read them...after all what i read about other 40k novelas its seemingly worth a read...hmmm...thanks for the hint sir!

yep. I get fed up with it. top TV shows:
Live @ the apollo (rhod gilbert and lenny henry)
Blackadder series 2, 3 and blackadder goes forth
Fawlty towers
Monty python (not a TV show, but meh)
try hot shots! part deux- funny as straying a little...
my fave bits in the 40k novels are:
in rynn's world, when the vice minister of education wets himself, called an idiot, and thrown ito the sea by crimson fists,
In first and only, when a captain challenges a junior commissar to a duel, and while nattering about what a "base creature" the commissar is, get punched by him.
Speaking of british authors read Iain banks. Amazing and funny - some is brutal and unpleasant at the same time though. I recommend 'look to windward' and 'excession' as two of his least bloody but most funny sci-fi books.

Your english is pretty good, do you find it hard to understand some of the humour when you read it in another language? In my frensh class in school we did a lesson on jokes in french and despite being quite good at written french back then I didn't get any of the jokes until they were explained.
does he use accents like pratchett does? i really like it when an author adds character by showing speach habbits of his characters...
and i have just found out that he is scottish....will keep your hint in mind...
Yeah well theres a whole species of intellegent machines that live in a sort of harmony with the people in those books and the way he writes their communication between each other is done really well to represent their machine intelligence (they are sometimes a bit nuts as well)
Automatically Appended Next Post: I would characterise him as first an formost an intelectual writer and only secondly a comedian (dark humour and satire mostly) but then you could say the same thing about all the other british authors you mention, except pratchet who is a humourist first and an intelectual writer second (a close second)
yep, was always the best part in a good book to spot the smaller things...every child laughs for the banana joke...
have you read by chance the coop work of pratchett and gaiman? the omen? this is one of my favorite....and it is one i acually had tears in my eyes at the end...not from laughing but that the last page was in fact the last page of the book...made me sad...
But my favourite ever comedy book for laughing at and with the british is sue townsends "the queen and I" in which a new socialist government decides to abolish the monarchy and appropriate their wealth and they and up living on a council estate on welfare! They have to go to the job center. This is guaranteed to make the british people (especially those who have lived in a coucil estate and claimed welfare) laugh their tits off
thats something only you brits could get away with... here you would get so nasty looks that you yourself would commit brainsuicide by sheer selfinduced guilty feelings...
So, basically, the Imperium shows Cain as a Hero, in their view, almost like a rock star for their grim universe, and allof thi8s is accomplished because all he wants is a cushy hotel, good food, do some card playing and to retire at a ripe old age and avoid the bad things out there.....apparently the Emperor has other ideas.^^
LOL! That's the other inspiration he used to make Cain, at first Cain was 50% Black Adder and 50% Flashman, eventually Cain became an entirely unique character after that.
some good literary conversation going on here... have you heard about the tv adaption of dirk gently holistic detective agency..? this is and long dark teatime of the soul are my favourite adams books, at the moment iam reading american gods by gaiman .
Always good to see Gaiman and Banks being referenced
The AI's in Banks' stuff have some of the funniest conversations I've come across, and Gaiman's a goddamn genius - although unfortunately none of his other stuff quite reaches the heady heights of 'The Sandman'.
Which Bank's book would be good for an introduction to his work please?
(New thread maybe so as not to clog up Vik's thread?)

I like the idea of little blimps as drop pods.
The other thing that occured to me was based on the whirligig toys. Drop pods could use a similar unpowered rotor system like a gyrocopter to slow the descent and fly into position.
It would mean having to source more of those propellors but would be cool imho.
just a thought
If you like short stories then The State Of The Art, otherwise I'd say any of the earlier stuff like The Player Of Games or Use Of Weapons. The books are all stand-alone, although several of the SF ones are set in the same continuity - the Culture novels. For his other stuff any of them really, although I know several peeps who didn't like A Song Of Stone much, didn't think much to the actual story, whereas I found I was entranced by his use of language in that one particulary.
back on topic - I like Chibi's idea of rotored drop-pods, sycamore pods full of stiff-upper lipped gentlemen ready to sip tea and kill xenos cads.
the moment i read chibis post i also thought "sycamore "...
hmmm to bad i had one of the skiffs cut a door into...if i do a sycamore droppod surley it shouldnt fall broadside down to earth? or rather then two rotors then?
dear ladys and gents clog all you like, i would fear i soon lose this new level of intake on literature then^^
and at neil,
i´ve read long dark teatime of the soul too, was a present from my irish born eglish teach in university...we had lots of funny conversations about british swearwords during class no other ones unnderstood LMAO there are so few people here in germany that could swear in english...me i think its an artform all by itself...to bad we got here the swearfilter on...
we could do a real contest of a heated insult thread^^
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries...
No need for those nasty swears see
Think I heard something about Dirk Gently, isn't it supposed to be a one-off one hour thing ? Going to have to lose an awful lot of stuff to get it in that time-frame if so.
has someone a link for that already...considering asgardians and all the other weid stuff in this novel there is bound to be a truckload to get lost in visualizing that for such a short time frame...to bad... either they do it to serve the matter right or they should let us stick to the mindcinama we are used too...
saw the going postal fim and wasn´t that bought on it to be sure...was.t that big of a book to begin with but the characters should have been casted better...also i think with pratchetts tv adaptions the design goes way more into victorian sets as in a more meadival setting...as i would deem morre fitting...
A few years ago , when the kids were about 7and 9 me sat the kids down because their friends were using some rather foul language , and although my kids dont use bad language , well at least around me, i wondered what sort of stuff they had heard. so after our evening meal we said , right this is a punishment free zone, what swear words do you know.... and i have to say the amount of swearing one upmanship that came out theire mouths was shocking to say the least.. it was a really funny thing and the kids loved it when they go into the swing of it lol and although they still do not swear i thought it was quite catrhartic for them to use language that would normally get them grounded. its a strange thing but i think it really helped take the secretive power and attraction of bad language out of the mix for them. although i swear like a sailor sometimes , bastich !
this sounds like a good idea. we came a bit around the grounding idea as some swear words are just to hard to avoid...when you hit your finger with a hammer then sugar wont do it...
so some of the more faecal orientated words are rather common in our house under ceratin circimstances...
tho most of the kids are only in kindergarten they will get in contact with these at least when they get to school...for me nowadays the part in life where every thing can go utterly wrong or just a bit meh...this is the place where innosence gets lost on a daily base...rather sad really...
ha we got 20cm last night...i really hate that white stuff now...the wife and the kids still love it tho and all want to me outside in the mids of that white mess...
If you're annoyed out them for dragging you out into the snow, why not give them what they want? pelt 'em with snowballs and get inside before they return fire!
well it´s always four agains one then...even the two year old gets better at throwing...and although i am feared for my nasty and evil snow tricks there are limits to a natural born fighter...ever made a cossak dance in snow when charging on a victim? thats something to get the returnfire to cease^^
uuh, no. can't say I have.
I'm more krieg-ish- while the enemy contents itself to making snowballs, i spend 2 hours building a 4ft wall of solid ice. they build a snow wall in 20 minutes, and I spend 1 minute per snowball, making them solid ice, and punching holes through thier fort, while lobbing snowballs high into the air to bombard them. By the time i've thrown 40 snowballs, they have half a wall, covered in snow and I am bone dry. works every year.
That just reminded me of Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith, everything in this guy's apartment is piled up in one corner due to all the fancy artificial gravity generators in the place having failed at various times
Shrike - your enemies spend 2 hours stockpiling snowballs whilst you build a wall? See I'd have snuck off had a nice hot cup of tea, then come back the long way, appearing behind your wall with 5 snowballs just before you finish your wall, pelt you, then return home for another refreshing brew

ah, but if I see you sneaking off, I'd build a load of snowballs and follow you. If you begin to get inside i'd pelt you, then pelt your house, then go inside or find someone else to pelt.
yep, thats the spirit, cant imagine someone actually investing that amount of time on a mere built of a snow wall...what point is there at all to build defences??? you sream you charge...you claim your victory...really in all my games my oponents have found out that i allways play with high odds, either win or loose but i tend not to play for safe...and beside, isn´t it the whole point of getting snowballs thrwon at you too when doing a snowballbattle? though i have to admitt i would rather stay at home und just be happy to sip on my tea instead all that pointless violence....really...
If you see me sneaking off fair enough, as that would mean I had failed in my sneaking
That is awesome vik, I do hope that is a removable scoop for fast reloading Think you could pull off a cossack dance with one of those in each hand - that would certainly send the enemy running
