Hello Dakka,

today marks a new beginning.
As I´m pretty bored for now with my SM armies...i ant you all to show you the very first pics concerning my newest project...

an imperial steampunk army.

the whole army will have a more british feel to it and is timeline located somewhat during the napoleonic wars and the first world war.

here some verrrry early wip pics...

a future airship as of yet unnamed origin guarded by not converted but soon to be catechans...

well the peaks of the airship will be made out of some cleaning device i cant name yet... also a big can of babymeal and some sokets for the compartment...

as i said a very wip...the parts are jsut dryfitted for presentation... also some heavy cutting and sanding will be involved to the peaks...

Nice start , you just need an empire states building for it to dock with now!

omg for that army all scenery thoughts are open i guess. so if someone (i´m pointing to certain known members here) will tell us there ideas on how an steampunk army should be based and the likes i would be willing to give it a try. by the way did some cobblestone bases some days back but the family didn´t recognized it....this was when i done the lava bases for the iron templars then...

thanks shatered soul, hope i can pull it off. to be honest much of my ideas have gone down the drain...
but this is something that marks a new perspective for me...

steampunk is more an artproject than a playable army to paint ...
about art, have been strolling through your gallery, nice stuff there. might you be a bit influenced bei wow? some of your sketches look a bit like art i´ve seen from that game. also i lkie your troopersketches, specially heidi^^

cheers, vik

http://defiantgaming.com/shop/hobby-modelling-and-gaming/bases/resin-30mm-cobblestone/prod_1315.html This wo9uld've been good for the base, if only they're not 30mm.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Miniature-Cobblestone-Stamp I guess you can also use this idea for the bases and terrain.

http://insanguinveritas.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=25 Another tutorial.

http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=30&zenid=sm14t82bl280uq4vs6eqntfkm3 Secret Weapon also sells cobblestone bases.

Good luck! I'm also in love with steampunk, so I would want for you to pull this off nice and brilliant!

thanks for the support mates.

special thanks for the cool and helpful links, i like especialy the tutorial links. the last is the topmost one. will try that out as it saves a million minutes in the making.

later today i will post my first construction pics. i´ve made a good start.

as i use the above described pieces i could use a bit of advice from you...
to sheet the peaks /domes of the zeppelin, what material would you suggest? and also how would you glue it to the domes? from within asthe grating/steely structure to be seen or from the outside in a kind of papermache´ ?

thanks again for your interest, i hoipe i wont disapoint you and me^^

so here are some progress shots, i had a little fun hacking and sawing at the pieces this morning...

still need some help in texturing the domes...

They should drop gas cannister
s to the trenches men below.

sorry cant do that, the gas thing was always the total bummer for me in the great war. hate this methode its a cowards way...
although it gave us the grat look with gasmasks...
seems you cant have it all i guess...

Not sure on the best way to proceed.
They need some longitudinal stringers, imho.
so some plastic strips over the latitudinal bars.
That would allow you to cover with paper and dope possibly. My only concern then would be for durability during game play.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/07 14:48:42

Post by: mullet_steve

I think if you could place a bridge in the front section (top half) and block out most of the openings from the inside with plastic card on the bottom half and the very top 4four openings of the top half it might look cool, I have an issue with the symetry the back should look different in my oppinion but you have the front half of a second airship already. maybe toy around with some big drinks containers for the back, have you thought about having (lost the correct words but some sort of secondary floatation devices like pontoons on the sides to give it more bulk) and fins and engines, steam driven props and maybe some steam cannon type affairs for mauvering? I like the look so far and have images of leman russ's with huge steam engines at the back

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/07 20:00:13

Post by: Viktor von Domm

there is lots of things to come for this monster.
i will do something at least to stearing armatures at the right, which will be the tail. so expect tails and fins there. also i have thought about having some side thingies on the hull. probably the engiens there...
the cabin now only in black will be the strearing and comanding place also there will be some heavy weapons there...

@Chibi Bodge-Battle
could you please reform your post? i have an urgent feeling you want to tell me something very useful. but since my englishknowledge derives from comics and fantasy literature i´m not that good (or even less so) in engeniering english.

if you could you can help by making a mockup of the fotos perhaps?
this beast will mark a whole new perspective on wargaming and modeling so i don´t want to mess that up...

thanks all for your support, vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/08 15:47:35

Post by: neil101

i think chibi was talking about the left and right lengthways crossbars and the up down ones as well. i think the ship looks good but the box underneath should be smaller in relation to the balloon size , or increase the ballon size , i think you should increase and go fro a killa giant blimp, with troopers dangling from guide ropes.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/08 18:48:11

Post by: Viktor von Domm

as always you hit the nail on the head neil (omg what did i wrote here?)
no seriously. the current pics only show a taped mockup to hold the pieces in place...

i thought the same. to increase the size of the blimp is the way to go... if i could just know how to do that. i always look for help in materials when designing...
for now i haven´t found something fitting that is bigger than that can...damn...

i´ve begun groundwork with the cabin. and i am now building weapon sponsons for the lower part. for now i have one gatlinggun... i will at least build one more...
what other sizewise comparable weponon system should i add?
i will post pics of the gatling wip later that day or better tomorrow...

should i build the blimb body inbetween the domes completly out of plasticard? that world probably look good but i´m not really worth a damn when it comes to cutting straight lines...

probably why i stick to garbage for use of scratchbuilding...

cheers dakka, vik

never would i demand such a thing from you, man!

all i can ask for is:

would you be my guide to the far (not so far by now) borders of madness?

some of them where very helpfull. the question i´m asking myself is do i think to complicated for this project? or is a complicated model the better one?
to make matters worse i have a model in my research bin thats even more striking....behold the madness:

this i guess covers what the others here had in mind for the sides of the blimb...

also i have a small side kick in mind as well:

and this is what i´ve been dreaming of making truly:

now thats a blast don´t you think...

should i downszize my dreams or go full spin and going insane on that?????

Now this is a fun idea. I remember an Ork player did a similar thing to his army as well. He had a bunch of ballons and blimps and such. Very cool.

well orks will only play as victims a role^^. as there will be more people with your kind of mustache be helping the airship to be moving around^^

though i´m not that far in the project it is still possible to make the plans be flexible...

i´m pretty sure that i have to seriously rethink the size of that monster...
which gives a whloe new set of problems in itself: how to sore or transport the thing?...

the bottleoption is quite intriguing....have to search for that bottle design. here in german the funny part is, i´ve seen such bottles but there are not commonly found. we go to 1,5 litres and then it mostly stops. the 2 or the 5 litres are mostly found in cheep shops that sell other stuff that is mostly out of date....

but now that the idea is instaled i will search out for that!

ooh its atricky one those pics are awesome, love the mini one! its so cute! and the bomb one is amazing!
i would personaly double the size , for the mothership. with bomb dropping and troop carriering abilities and make baby one man ones, as fast attack. i suppose the sky is the limit

made a mock up of sizes, i prefer the third down myself .it looks right! other sizes would be huge!!

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/08 21:12:09

Post by: Viktor von Domm

oh man you only made it worse^^

the fact is, in the beginning i thought one can is all i need to use...

love your four can version with two cabins. looks so much more right to me...

the thing is i want to stay true to the domes. these parts define for me the character of the airship. after that the whole idea is open.
another problem might be the palasiccard i have. its made rather next to a A$ paper sheat. so basically i can do crossbars about 30cm in length...

if i do crossbars from up to down every now and then then i can probably extend the hull endlessly...

should i bild the hull from scratch? and if i shuld then do something to prevent the hull from collapsing invards...

good to have someone to think this through^^.

thanks man for your good advice, vik

hello dakka,

in tribute to neils helpfull suggestions i hearby present you all a new set of conzeptual pics for the ungoing work.
i have deeply thought about englenthen the airship and think it is truly needed.
though neil suggested the use of either multiple cans (wich i regret i don´t have) or the use of larger bottles (see above) i came up of a solution.
after scurring our household i found large banisters(?) for youghurt!. and plenty of them at that.
also for finns and wings i added some flask for showergel...

so without further addo i present:

the big one

the detail view of the finns and wings

front view

detailview from backside with the first cabin and a glimpse of a sponson and a gatling, my favorit weapon...

as mentioned before i attempted to sculpt with air dry clay some cobblestone bases. my family didn´t recognize them as such so now i want to test the community for them...

so please open up the discussion...

I think they look fine as cobblestones. Maybe filling in the deppresions with sand would give it an earthy feeling. or at least something not colored in greyscale.

Apologies for the confusion.
Basically what was said
longitudinal stringers are the ribs that run along from back to front
Latitudinal goes around, so are circles if you look at the nose of the airship.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/09 23:38:58

Post by: Viktor von Domm

talked today with my wife and she said i should make it way thicker in the middle part. then i will add as described by you longitudinal stringers. also i will add some Latitudinal ones to create that striking net look.
after that i´ve planned to cover the blimb with cloth and then paint it at first with glue to make it sturdier...

also i thought about letting the "stringer net" or better the skelleton above the cloth so to still have that skelleton look...

what do you think ?

Agree with Frau von Domm

Not very aerodynamic, but...

have to say I really like the look of constructions like the frame of an airship skeleton. It could look really cool.

At some point in the future am supposed to be hosting a Steampunk group build on a modelling forum.
Am in danger of knicking some ideas!

No need to drive yourself nuts micro-detailing a dozen bases. Those will look just fine from 24 inches. Maybe "cobblestone" is too specific....they look like concrete from a city or something....which is good neh?

thank whovever watches upon us for joining this forum!
sometimes i think that for all that i know and for all that i learn that i merly sit at avast beach on an endless opcean and the things i fathom are just teacups full of wisom and knowledge...
thanks for the video. again my horizons have broadend. i will definatly look into that cool series. i liked the look instantly.

i´ve found during my research similiar art:

well agroszkiewicz , i want to look it right so probably end up nut i will, if i am not even now^^.

well the design is a bit too futuristic and technological advanced but the titel for the ship and the colorscheme could very well be red zepplin (or should i do led zepplin?^^).

again to Chibi Bodge-Battle :

areodynamics is something i think you cant be bothered with when it comes to something like steampunk. i think here aplys more the rule of cool than anything else. Aesthetics is more important here. so i will bulk it out and also i will let the skeleton be shown. also as suggested by neil i will add hopefully massive panels of polished wood and brass and bronze. there will not be much steel to be seen. also the colorscheme is pretty set in my head. i will aim for a very classy gentleman look. very british and colonial. i like the red coats. with white straps and polished looking weapons. my soldiers have to polish their belts and shoes!
there not in some downtrodden gang you know^^ there in the royal navy or else!!

thanks for all that nice support and inerest in this project.

if soemone has any further suggestions don´t hesitat to take part here.

Absolutely aesthetics first old thing

Royal Navy wear blue, or whites in hot places.
However! Royal Marines could be in red with white ribbing as you imagine

hey vik, love your research pics and comments about sitting on the edge of a vast sea really exoressive visually, i think you should use this as a metaphor for your project! , standing atop the led red zeplin looking out towards a new horizon, the Admiral awash with grim forboding. sailing above the battles like a sword of Damocles waiting to smote wrathfull lighting down up your enemies far below! and appearing through parted clouds like a ray of hope as an An avenging angle to rescue the footsloggers from the enemies.
mmm. the sword of Damocles is a good name for an airship aswell , hovering above the enemies heads !
more inspiration if you can take it mate!

i think Alfred Von Tirpitz would make a cool character to base your Grande Admiral on! and a Worthy foe for General Mathias Von Dom of the Praxian Guard! lol

no way man, you didn´t name a respectable officer of the the likes of me? though luck will be upon ye!
seriously great honor for me^^. and yeah i´m pretty exited as well. it is a great thing to make. today i had a little fun in hotglueing tau gatlings into my halfspherical sponsons...
seems i have to search for more round spheares tho...
needs more dakka one could say...

well i imagined the comandeering officer as a person with a very well kept beard. the naval concept IS the thing to do. chibi and neil your both right in the blue scheme. this makes me torn inbewtween.... would red coats and black/blue trousers work? with a red stripe like han solos pants? also this will be easier if i stick to navalforces cause they have these rather easy to sculpling hats/caps.

and for that methaphor of mine...
seems that i was just sitting blindly on that shore and the waves came crushing in. now drowned with knowledge i will emerge with newfound wisdom and will rise like a watery reborn version of a phoenix...

damocles....sounds cool. got something more british up your sleeves tho? if i start ancient greek to use, then i might drift away from a consistent theme? or not?
some pics of yours neil literaly blew my mind. why didn´t i found that final fantasy pic???

i now think i need an upper deck as well. the cabins are good and fine, but for that suggested detail i need lots of space...

good that will take ages, what did i stumble into...
also if i do much of that submarine thing, which i like, but then i would go crossboarder to dieselpunk as well. which would result in to the shiny and brass world of queen victoria but rather the late 20s and 30. of the cast century...

with every decission you make you birth a new world but also kill millions. its a good thing tho that you can make many more on your way through life...

During the age of Man of War sail ships, there would be a unit of soldiers with muskets on board ship for close quater fighting.
These were the marines who in the Royal Navy wore the red uniform. It would be perfectly valid to have both.

There were uniforms of blue and red, but can't remember which army. It too would work.
TBH if you imagined the red and white then there is no reason why you need change that. Your airship and crew!

So your a poet it seams....very nice! , about the redcoats, did you see this link http://samilitaryhistory.org/vo052cpf.jpg
its both british and nautical.

I demand more WIP pics lol , feels good to badger you for work lol , although i hope you return to the arth angels , its a great concept as well, and i think you should use the underground drop pod drill thing, in your IG concept , then you have the sky and the undrground covered, Land submarines! now there an idea worth doing!!
you Must develop a name for your Army and some fluff. we want characters ...please!
regards neil

And for mathias Von Dom , i never siad he was a very good general though! you havent seen him yet! he is leader of the Roughriders! your on horseback!

interesting thought...drilling devices and then i have both terrains covered...gives the term falnking a whole new meaning....

hmmm more pics is what you want... i will try to add some in the evening but cant promise to hard...

got geusts today...

thanks chibi for your help in army design. i know its my army but who wants to be dumblooking just to make a point, so i treasure your opinion well!

mmmmm steam-punk. I want it- and those cone shaped things are mop-bucket parts! I like your inventiveness! those shower gel containers make excellent fins!!

thanks weety, was really unsure about the bottles as fins...

and i aplaud to your object regognition^^ the cone shaped ones are indeed from mop-buckets^^

steam punk is a great deal for me now. this project will be a true breaker. either i break it into a true beuty or get broken in the process...

a small update as demanded^^

i have today done some more work on future weapons. after i did a search through my 40k bitsbox i came up with some insights about steampunk look... the thing i found out, you have to take into account that we are mostly talking about my taste here... is that xenos tech looks far more suitable than actual IG stuff...

so i hearby present some artful weaponry from the futuristic victorian age...

group shot of todays achievments...

tau railguns?? to be gatling stand ins on halfspherical sponsons...

sideview of some eldarpieces cobbled into an anti aircraft device. if you build a super heavy airship you have done a hard job no point in small aircraft messing up your work, he?

you´re looking at me pal? yeah? so what smile^^ and pi....off^^

and a very old and first scratchbuilt of mine, done om some pipe-isolation foam and some cardboard tubes...

so now you can come up with some constructive critizism...^^

A bubble canopy with the gun on the outside of it on the bottom or top of the midsection of the ship could look pretty cool. Or maybe towards the tail end? I don't know. But a bubble dome gunner position sounds neat. Like, WW2 style. The actual name escapes me

And that's an Eldar Bright Lance turret from a Wave Serpent.

LOL sorry dude. The "radda" is in reference to the TV show my avatar is from, Chowder. In terms of my next post about a bubble dome and more poor wording, if you look at the top of the B-25 Mitchell, there is a cockpit with a gun turret on the top of it.

in fact i will do both of your mentioned thoughts. there will be gondolas as cabins for steering and steamengine is suppose and also for weaponsponsons...
and then there will be the upperdeck that will in short look like a Aircraft carrier... that will be a hard part, as i have to do some building up there... something thats not to big but still looking the part...

by the way mates, does anyone know a way to do something like that?

i think it would look good on some part of the underside of the upperdeck or the front of the blimp...

and on a safty note: whenever i post something new... stay calm, check for open fire and get all personel to a safe place...^^

That CD rack for the zepplin skeleton is a tip top idea! Its going to provide MAD structural integrity, and a solid base to build your detailing onto.

That model is going to weigh ALOT by the time you are done. I take it this is a display piece as opposed to a gaming piece?

Get some plastic clips and convert any miniature into a figurehead for your prow! Assemble your figurehead however you'd like...I'd suggest looking at the Sisters of Battle mini line. Once you've removed the parts around the waist that you won't be using, just do a "glob n' smear" with GS ball, then trim the crud just like I've got show in my Chaos Lord bitz build.

wouldn´t it be a bit on the small size to use a sister? aren´t true prows (thats the right word?) bigger than real life humans?...
but in essence your right, that would work...if i wasn´t that frightend about using my GS amount i have...
as for what to use this piece...honestly i haven´t the foggiest knowledge of warhammer rules... i´m mainly in for the modeling part. my oldest son is very good when it comes to do the maths so i guess he will help me understand the rules then...^^ but i think it´s more of a display piece...but whoi knows could serve as a piece of terrain and than a cc battle might be fought upon the decks...that would be so rad^^

Just use a teeny bit of GS to extend the joins when you assemble the prow. Its the same technique I use to increase the proportions on all my true scale work. Not hard at all to get something proportionally correct to look about 8 or 9 feet tall next to a standard sized mini. Just remember that the scale is something like 25x. IE one inch on the model represents around 25 in real life. Keeping that in the back of your head will help to garauntee proportionally correct modeling, which really looks amazing when you fill it up with busy bitz.

That CD rack provides an awesome structure. Have you considered using tissue to form the skin, like you would use in making flying aircraft models? Going over the rack and the mop squeezy things would give a pretty cool representation of a zeppelin I believe.

absolutley, truer words were never spoken!
also i think taht if you buy your minis already painted you field and lead them not so cautious as if you invseted plenty of working hours into them. i don´t want to be that kind of careless general...every soldier is special. also every soldier will get a nametag even when its just on its base^^...

ach me aching heart. does me something sinister to see such beautiful minis here...ach ach...

man neil, ever considered a new carrier as chief totrurer with the c.i.a.? might be worth a try...

well today marks a day of creativity vs craftmanship...
i´ve done my fair bit as i added some strips of cardbard to the hull of the blimp...three on each side. i think i was rather precise in doing that, which isn´t something i can do mostly very good. so i give me the thumbs up^^ for that. then i had an urge to add the cloth in a hurry... bad decision... i cut the apropriate amount of cloth for both parts and the added quite a grat measure of pva glue... spred it evenly...well tryed it..... and the cloth did what it shouldn´t have done... it moved away... it folded and it was apin to behold...i tried it by screwing it together, i tried it to hold it in place via baloons... to no avail...
in the end i had to put it out of its misery... and i started all over . new cloth i cut later but hold in place with pegs. then painted it with cheap acrilic paint for walls.

the failed attempt you can see in the pics... what you see is the point in the timeline 5 minutes before i had an anger alert...and the cloth got its terminal trash taste^^.

so now ißm waiting for the first piece to get the paint dry. i guess this will only get the cloth a bit stiffer but not the way i want it to be...so should i use varnish next? i tthink for the glue it was a too big piece of cloth...
if this also goes awry then i will do something completly different. i will try to sew... yeah men of the world i will sew that damn piece of wretched cloth to the frame, this might actually look far better. but that will take me ages...damn for craetive visions...

so here is my failure my parttime downfall. keep that as a reminder what you´ll get with rushed jobs...

your gnarly mate vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/12 19:22:20

Very creative attempts, I'll give yah that!

If you're still having trouble, try coating the inside edge of a few ribs at a time with some quick dry superglue. Then reach in with a long chopstick and gently tap the cloth against the glued ribs. It will take a while, but works nicely since the superglue holds things via surface tension at first, then it hardens within 15 seconds.

Work smarter, not harder!

P.S. those mini's a couple of posts up would be intense for this subject. Its starting to remind me of Columbia in the Bioshock Infinite

http://kotaku.com/5607451/bioshock-infinite-goes-beyond-the-sea--into-the-skies

Post by: Viktor von Domm

after viewing the video i understand what you´ve ment by your post. cool look.
and jep. rushing things just makes it take longer in the "long" run.
hmm the thing with the super glue is that i works really fast...well also it works really fast^^ so thats a benifit in itself...tststs....
have to wait and see i guess.

the main problem is that with all the helpfull suggestions about what minis look cool in this context, your all so damn right... its just that my budget wont yieled i guess. if i get a package of some sweet zulu type brits then my wife might skin me alive...or worse might do more sincere thing like looking gloomy for money not in her terms spent wisely...

so what i want you to do is take a good thought and try to help me with converting my ton of cadians and catachans...to look the look...otherwise i think it might become a ghostship...

This is a fine plan, plus it will keep the GW scale correct for the whole model....which is really important IMO.

You could probably poke around for some GW Imperial Commisar parts on Ebay and kitbash them into a steampunk officer pretty easy. Make some rudimentary GS feathers or fluff for the uniforms...if you'd like I can try making some tonight and post my typical "wtf is that" technical pics. for yah.

As would a Steampunk airship to run a skirmish game on!
I like these threads that make the cogs in the head grind out ideas!

necromunda is really up my alley, skirmishes are far more something i look when thinking about battles. a blade between teteh, gun loaded and then charging with a small band of fellow guardsmen, that got more style than a horde of minis getting slaughtered almost instantly by the big guns. personaly i think in these terms about big guns rather like diffeicult terrain or cover^^ than actual weaponry...

on a side note. since i will be doing the upperdeck(headline will be hopefully next week, i need some craetive help with designs for the builings on top.

should i do railings, should i build a landingplatform too? well actually the last thing is quite settled for me as i want to build some vessels that use the airship as a carrier...
also how big should the above mentioned building be? how many stores?
should it have an open stearing bridge? well cant think of anyone who would say "no" to that, wouldn´t you?

so keep posting your ideas , so i´ve to wade knee deep through ´em^^

Umm yeah...nevermind the gs idea. WAY too small to work with imo for a hat.

On the plus side I dug through my jar'o heads (anyone that buys marine sprues knows what I mean) and found some stuff that could easily be kitbashed into a steampunkesque head with a modeling scalpel and some glue.

Following was done with a few precise cuts of the modeling knife to get the hair off, then just smoosh a tiny ball of GS where you want it to join. Allow it to cure a bit, then trim with your ridiculously sharp razor scalpel. Sharp is key. Xacto knife will not suffice, at least imo.

I think it gives a reasonable impression of hair being blown in the wind and could prolly pass for a Final Fantasy Character. <shrug> Paint the cyborg crap bronze. This same technique can be used to make some really crazy heads, and it takes about 5 minutes per head if even that. the cured and trimmed GS will give you a nice clean join.

You could also just glue it on, but it would look sorta bleh.

hello boys and girls,

today i can offer you no pics but some serios questions.
due to some build realted needs/mishaps i need to built some ornamental designs for the middle part of the hull of the blimp...
i need specifically some designs that would work as an aquilla stand in. to be precise, i dont want to do the aquilla. the army is set in a kind of alternate 40k universe which doesn´t have an emperor but an empress instead. could be you´ve heard of her:

"Empress Victoria... she now leads the galaktic empire of common wealth for more than 20.000 years. due to some serious injury she had to be held in life support by her chief physician within a giant iron lung. this and some other special developed mechanisms made her live a very long life indeed...."

so this is a very short insight of the fluff surrounding the force i am wanting to build. and for this special occaision i need again the help of the fair dakkaites to help me in this design quest... the sigh should be about at least 4cm wide and 12cm high. please bear in mind that the hull of the blomp will be 51cm long (peaks/domes not included...) so it shouldn´t overshine the hull...i had thought about 12cm:12cm but thats not obligatory...

so if you have some ideas i will be deeply in your debt...

p.s. the material used will be cardboard as of the collegebook nature...i plan on a layered look...

thanks in advance, yours vik

so i made my own first attempts at designing some sort of flag for the Victorian Empire...
tho it is still the fourthieth millenium it is very british indeed...
with the surprem ruler The Empress Victoria a flag could either look like:

or like

i´ve also done some tests with an impere sign from star wars to be changed with the rebel crest or the "V" but i´m not that satisfied with that...

personaly i like the blue to black change. the black stands for the mourning state the epress lives in. shortly before she had to be positioned in the afore mentioned iron lung her neloved husband and king died of influencia and left her alone... she never recovered from that tragic loss and ordered the whole empire to let the royal blue to be banished from all use... also due the stressed state she was in, she began the great conquering of all there is to compensate for her loss.

her reign marks a new dawn on technological breakthroughs as spacetravel and very heavy weaponry were developed. constantly adaption brought wonders of technology to the average man, that would otherwise be only usable for the wellsituated...
although traveling is doable with tremendous speeds being still british you still have to travel with dignity and that restricts speeds not suitable for respectable men...
so whenever troops or civics are traveling they do so with great dignity and therefore with a more steady speed...therefore the use of airships and balloons.
the galaktic empire of common wealth is not a christian empire anymore. after her great loss the Empress also declared all forms of religion as a crime tantamount to treason. with great efforts this was brought to the people by making the wellfare programs of this empire to erase all needs for solitude through religion. the few nests of traitorous religgious groups are constantly sought out and are so few that they are rather to be nonexistent.

....to be continued...

Wow i can see you have really thought about the story. It seems very plausible , just what i would expect from the tyranical british Empire. subdugating any planet for its Imperial Tea supplies! just because it could. like an overbaring and petulent bully of a child. English colonisation sucks and lots of people here still think that Britania rules the world, and lements for its loss! Never admiting to themselves that Britain Success went hand in hand with India America Scotland and Africa's loss! as well as many more. I say good riddance to that imperial Buffoonery we were never great just tyranical!
Oops bit of a rant sorry, as you can guess iam not a typical patriot, prob comes from my dual heritage being written on my skin, not in my blood!
but i guess this is all just fantasy , so the subjigated can be the tau! nobody likes Tau right!! lol

Edit i like the black flag looks great like when spiderman turned to venom ! or when superman died . i think the gothic V looks better than the starwars logo though! more traditional! .
Well Vik it seems all the ingrediants are here , time to start cooking! and i think you will have a great cake!

Famous images that I'd assosciate with Queen Victoria, and which would make decent iconic images for plags would be her silhouetted profile, her tiny crown, the coat of arms of Great Britain or Victoria's royal cypher:

so it´s finally time for a picture update...

made some progress to the flags on both sides of the blimp- hull.
used cardboard and cut it in little parts to give the banner a more structured look.wasn´t easy to glue it to the frame tho...wanted to peel away most of the time and no real thing to hold it in place. but then i took some staples and it worked. i guess in the evbening it will be cured. the "v" is not glued on as i´m not that satisfied with its design...
whats not to be seen on those party outdated pics is that i drilled 1mm holes into the banner and stuffed some needles in them. glued them with superglue and they should when completed look like the banner is riveted to the frame...i can really recommend this procedure. takes a bit of time but it works real good and also gives a bit of stability to the frame.

so without further ranting i present the flag. for our brits visitors, feel free to salute, stand to attention, show your behind, make a rude gesture or just scroll on...whatever takes your fancy^^

complete hull with flag

detail shot of said flag...

at neil: no i havent figured out how to do the top deck...its still a puzzler for me only thing i definatly know is that i will use matchsticks to create a wooden looking floarboard of the pirateship nature...that will also test my nerves...

Re decking:
Would consider plastic card and scoring the planks in with a pin in a pin vice.
Think this would be a bit of a chore but an easier option to matchsticks.

The lines would be able to take a thin wash so you could see them on the finished model.

I agree, maybe get some pre scored/formed plasticard sheets with detailing on.

Thin strips of plasticard may end up as a better option than matchsticks as well.

well you alwyas have to consider my middlename, which is cheap^^. the matchstick i got, they´re a thicker variant for fire-places, so the are also longer, about 30cms. i have plasticcard but i wanted to use the remanants to form a hull of the top deck like a real hull for a ship...
the thing with preformed palsticcard i rulre out completly as i have to go shopping in a madelling suply market here and they´re not on the cheap side...^^

I prefer matchsticks as well , its trhe real deal, and although it maybe time consuming , i doubt its anymore time consuming than scoring plasticard to try and make it look like matches. lollypop sticks ( wow havent ever wrote that word i think) are also good , but they are more expensive as well. had an idea about the top, i watched troy the other day , and noticed how similar the greek ships were to the 40k ships , they obviously took the design from the greeks.
http://www.honornetwork.com/i/military/Greek_Ship.JPG
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg1/General_Hentai/img002.jpg

maybe you could also steal the idea, and place the decking atop it

thanks neil for the research...

and what now? well how about some update?
no?
well heck yeah!
this evening i was watching Indy, crappy movie. but while doing so i did the domes of the blimp hull.
so i stuffed and glued the domes with th same cloth i used for the middlepart. made some triangular shapes out of it and glued them with pva to the plastic hide...
all in all it worked quite well. it now cures but given our room temperature that wont take long.

both domes now layered with glued on cloth

inside work view of one dome

so i am now thinking about how to attach the domes to the body... after that i will have the thought capacity to really look into the decksdesign...i think the galley look is very fine. i will probably use sprue frames for the reling. also i have to do some building on top as it would look a bit lazy if done purly in ancient greek style. the batteringram look is something i hold dear, this i will consider doing...dont know how but i will sleep over that...

after i have a clear path to the deck the engines will be next...

so many more updates are to be expected...

As for attaching the domes....I STRONGLY advise going out and getting a pin vise/hobby drill. Use some wire snips to cut paperclips for the pins, or if you are a baller use brass rods. YOu're going to want to do some serious work on the structural stability of something as heavy as you are working with.

Hell, depending on the thickness of the plastic you could easily use small nails for dowels, or even wood. Just please take the time to make sure them gaks aren't going to fall apart when someone bumps it!

be sure of that mate. in that model is way to much heartblood... the only thinh that keeps me from building is the constant energy it costs me to not do all the other stuff i have ideas about. nearly an hour a day i do some steampunk webresearch to get more ideas... its a very unhealthy addiction but i like it....i´m on top of it, i can do it...darn those flashes of creativity are anoying...

as for the star wars reference, i have for now forsaken this idea as it would associate my project in a false light. there would be to many expectations coming up in the wrong directions...

i think i will do a list tommorow of new projects for this steampunk army as to whats to do in the future... maybe that help me then to concentrate on the task ahead...

If im not to late for blimp idea's

I love these blimps. They are the fire nation army blimps from the avatar anime. This is the best pic i can find D=

The curve on the nose is really good looking to me.

Yea the fronts on them with the lion type faces are awesome. I recomend watching the whole of avatar series. (not just because its awesome)
ALL of the fire nations contraptions and machines are all tecnically steam powered, as they use fire bending to run the machines themselves. all their stuff would look absolutely epic on a tabletop. I recommend you look into it

With regards to the mortheim gangs, in blighty(Uk) its Mordheim, and that is an area of the Empire of karl franz ,along with Nuln

Just one huge ship for your apocalypse game. 8000 points.

That would be the ultimate presentation board for an army at a tournament. Rocking up with that ship, with a 1850 army just sitting on the deck ready for battle.

Rewatched that video. maybe not THAT big... hahahah you could have about 100k points fitted on that with ease. =\

Yea just some sig I made up on photoshop a year or two ago. Its to big to fit in the limited space though D=

is that airship a post or a repost from you? its funny cause i found it also myslef in the net...
and yeah sometimes i think this design looks a bit easier and better in parts than mine...
working for your hobby now thats some new scheme i havent heard of yet. i know lots of schemes from that department, because my wife/parentssociety want me to, cause my kids need new shoes, the family wants to make holidays, cars broke down and i need a new one...but working for hobby? well thats a good motivation. i cross my fingers for you, whats your profession?

good luck mate, vik

p.s. haven´t got any progress to show you today as of kindergarden closed for today due to gathering of personel...so i had two kids at home= no hobbytime...
i am now in a decission process, how shozld i do the foaring on the topdeck? wooden vs techlook...i do have some betting that i could glue to the surface and have it look like steelwebbing...or i could use something(what matches, chopsticks, cut cardboard) to imitate wooden floar...the thing is i want a methode thats quicker than cutting 500 matches or cutting other things apart in slomo and tideous work... 500 times the same process would kill me.
and by then it isn´t even glued to the surface...so what to do fair followers of this thread...? chibi IIRC suggested scoring plasticcard to get the wooden floar look...how to do that? i only got scalpes and carpetknifes for cutting that. how do i leave marks to show panels of wood? and how would i then get the wooden look on them. and if i used cardboard or plasticcard how long would you suggest me doing the seperate boards in cm? i wanted to do them about 4- 6cm long and about 0.5 - 1 cm wide...any other suggestions for the measurements?

thanks in advance mates, vik

Imo, get loads of Popsicle sticks and cut the curved ends off, and glue em together to create a wooden floorboard effect. Add a few dents and stuff etc.

Uh im a full time student atm. hahah Got my last high school exam on thursday next week, then its 15 weeks off for summer holidays here in NZ. Im only 18, but going to uni for engineering next year. I have about $30 a week income. So if i want to expand my warhammer collection then a job it is.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I4jtbsVw0Uk/R1LAc3zF-FI/AAAAAAAAAKM/hcUsDqB_0HA/s1600-R/IMG_0485.JPG
Something like that, but the boards are popsicle sticks. You can always cut 1 into two floor boards to not make them as big

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 07:37:08

Post by: Viktor von Domm

the foar design looks like i had imagined it. cant describe it but your pic shows it. 30$ isn´t getting you anywhere fast i understand that...well moneys always a crappy theme in life...i know my fair share of that sure enough...

as for popsicles in large amounts...where the heck should i get about ca. 200 worth of them? and then in a hurry? to eat that much of them would cause a very unhelathy state of diabetes instantly?^^
well i will be visiting a hardwarestore in the next hour to buy some stuff for a selfmade pictureframe i want to built for my wife for christmas...so maybe i find something there for my uses too...

p.s. cross my fingers for your exams next week!

hell yeah, i couldn´t come up with anything to post here as i´m a bit burned out/at a loss of what to do next ...
the hull of the blimp is next to ready and i didn´t deemed it picworth to post here as there isn´t so much to be shown...

i made some attempts to get a look of floar with bigger matches, smaller matches chopstiks and cardboard to see waht might be a) goodlooking b)doable in not so long and tideous time...
well for now this is where my troubles come from. the things that would look good for me are very repetitive work. and this would bring me in a state of pre-burnout. thats a point of my mental state. when i see some work tahts not firing up my creative synapses then i tend to leave it to rest. hence my big unfinished sm army...got bored during the work and then i put them all off to a long and hearty sllep in a cardboardbox...
as i wanted to build the deck with round ends in the port and nose of the ship, i havent got the ideas on how to do the railings... as the material i wanted to use are stiff and i cont bend them to make curves...
i even calculated the amount of materail i had to collect to make the floarboards... this made me also frustrated...
talked to my better half about burnout as she now begins a new project with knitting. the before project a pullover is resting the same way as my earthangels...but i dont want to let the airship rest in pieces... this has to be done.

need motivation and possibly some help...
and again we´re to asong by our loved beatles^^

Ah, bendable railing materials, it can be some work to get them to stay bent to the right shape, but flexible comes in Music shops where they sell guitar strings of various thickness. I like using them for antennae or thicker ones as hoses.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 23:13:32

Post by: Viktor von Domm

your right, but i wanted to use the materials i got already. which would be oversized matchsticks and chopsticks...or even cardboard. it is then bendable but to thin then...
guitar string would look good i have to give you that. but to be honest i picture the railings massiv so pipelike railings are also outside of my plans...
thanks nevertheless for your input.

vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 23:22:49

Post by: shasolenzabi

ah, then you really need plastic tube stock. I get mine from GailForce9, they have solid round stock that is flexible as well as the stiffer "pipes"

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 23:30:04

Post by: Viktor von Domm

ah you got my wrong... waht i wanted to create is a wall like look, not pipelike look. ad you get with old ships made of wood.perhaps imagine a pirate ship. these kind of railings. maybee i should water the wood materials and let it sit. then they would bend...
i know that galeforce 9 has some nice stuff. its also a fact that i cant sqeeze my budget any more to yield some cash... have to make due with householditems like chposticks etc..

vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 23:41:10

Post by: shasolenzabi

ah, then hot water or steaming the parts may work, like how England made the wood fuselages for the Spitfires back in WWII. If there is a limit to the budget, and you have the materials at hand, likely boiling the wood would do the trick to make them bendable, then put them in something that will keep the bend as they dry?

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/19 23:47:49

Post by: Viktor von Domm

jep, that will probably be the plan. will use round houserelated objects to bend the wood then. do you think really boiling will be needed or just average heated water and time? hmm guess that will be solved by try and error^^.

thanks for your support man^^

Vik if you sketch some ideas down or posta a link to a pic of something very near what you want for every section you want it in , iam sure the imaginative and supportive culture here will be able to present very useful solutions , just like shasolenzabi just did , but you also need plenty of rest for such a huge project. I think you have plenty of support, but people need to know exactly how they can help, no vaugness, as for not getting bored , its the biggest struggle for an immaginative person, the idea is the gold , not the process of making it a reality. I find all the joy has left my projects for me by the time i finish them , some things i cannot stand to look atr any more, not even understanding what i have created , even if it is obvious, after staring at something for a long time , things lose their meaning. thats why iam working on three projects at once , so when i get bored of one i switch to the other, and i try to make the projects very different. but ultimatel its the dakka community that forces me to finish things to a high standard, or at all these days. i for one will help out in any way i can. but youy have gotta have the love for it, maybe you should take a break and do some earth angels for a while? as for decking it will be a great feature of the ship when completed. it doesnt have to be completed in a snap it could be a year long side project. your fluff is amazing mate , and i know it hard when you cant get the pieces you want but i should know thats why i have perry minis instead of dkok , but it will force you to think out of the box and what you create will be truly original. if not what you had in mind when you started!

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/20 01:13:57

thanks again for the motivational speach. i think i will show tomorrow some pics. i want to cut the deck from a board i have so to make the general shape...and maybe will start with some floar making...
this will be then done for showing you all some progress as much to motivate me through you^^.
as for having sideprojects i tend to get lost by this strategy tho i tend to use it all too often. guess its how my mind works. but for once i want to be a stickler^^.
i think i have to bend my whim around one project for once. after that i will be probably paint minis and this will get more diverse than such a great project. the time for sm will be coming back as there is also so much potnetial there...

and who doesnt want to have hundreds of dkok? me, i would want them sure enough^^.

thanks again and off to some sleep...sleep is not easy when constantly thinking abou a project...

so i was in a bit of a state yesterday... now regained a fair bit of my mental strength i made good haste and worked a bit on the beauty^^.

today i cut the board thats the upperdeck basis to the right form...well almost to the right form... after a little plan error i ah to glue the pieces together.... also soe minor accidental cuts where not wanted to be... not in my parts...^^ these will but not to be seen as the cunstruction will hopefully neatly cover all bad spots up.
i then had a motivation thought. insted of making the floaring material all beforehand cut to length and use i instead glued the bits done already to the board. thus giving me my first victorys to behold^^. instant win^^
i also did the middleparts of the reilings to get an idea of where to glue the floaring to. i´m a bit unsure about the technique used for the floar. the pattern might be a bit getting used to...
so i think it is now time to show you my work of the evening...:

p.s. my cadian HQ minis were in the post...so churchil is in da house now^^

nose

tail

cadian HQ Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill inspecting the construction site...

close up with the floaring pattern...a bit dark...

front view with upper deck in raw vision^^

close up front view. the lid is from an applejuice bottle i collect...

tailside view of the airship ...

and i also made a small purchase via ebay in bits. baught me 30 SM shoulderpads and 30 imperial caps from Warhammer fantasy imperial forces...
this will be my bits basic for converting my catachan men to make them into naval marines...

so after that long time without no real picture update i hope to receive some comments and well mannered^^ criticisms^^

the felshing out of the lower part of the deck is something i want to do with foamcore. so you jumped ahead of me^^ i think i want to create a hull like the ones from normal water vessels. although you used the tail end^^ your idea wher to and how to place a figure is very good. i will see waht i can do. also i thought about instead of using old queenies bust i could use a dragons head in reference of the old uther pendragon...or would that be too far away from the victorian age theme?
by the way what do you think about the name A.S. Uther? sounds good or not stempunky enough?
as the models arived today i´m very edgy to start working with paint and mins again... must compose myself^^

Wow Vik, that is looking good at this styage and the ideas to flesh out the upper structures is cool too. I to am drooling over this beauty!

Definitely will be good for Apocalypse games as well. As a suggestion, I thought maybe some sort of outrigger engines as well as maybe some sponson guns along it's flanks? Just some thoughts.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/21 00:10:38

Post by: Viktor von Domm

at shasolenzabi
could you please post a pic of what exactly you ´ve menat by "outrigger engines "...i probably guess right but i weant to be sure as i dont want to miss out on oportunities.
also i tend to think it is more a piece of terrain in terms of kind of necromund games. small skrimishes. also there are a set of four sponson weapons for cabins that will be placed at the bottom of the blimp. and a double linked converted Eldar Bright Lance turret from a Wave Serpent as well....

at neil. H.M.S. it will be. up until i´ve found a suitable head to go for the nosepart of the ship it will remain H.M.S. only...

actually the H.B.M.S. sounds more cool but Britain isnt any more its galactic common wealth so and i guess that would be too long for a prefix of a ship...

so well the potter guy aside, i had to go a step back...
the wooden floar is now all gone. i had a moment of reviewing the model and saw that the idea with the floar done out of chopsticks is crap. so ichoose to tear the bits apart. fear not, the model is being built nonetheless. i now will go for a steely look. i stil want to stick to the yesterday mentioned look, but instead of wood i now will go into a steely look. so i will build steel plates of various sizes to built the floar out of it by cardboard.should go faster and more exact. i want to add rivets to the foar but how do i do thatwithout getting the surface to uneven? it is mainly look si i thought maybe if i use my holepuncher then i might simply punch holes in the plates and let tehm rest inside. thios will add a ring and a rivet in the plates and you have the look without to much fuss...how does that sound? if its not understandable then i will show tomorrow how i do it by pics.

the bending of wood through water usage is still under way but i may be not going that way for doing the railings...

Popsicle sticks can be obtained in mass at kids craft area's in place's like wall mart. I know your in Germany so you wont have that, but do you have big general stores with pretty much everything? Just head there, go to the craft section and check it out. I have about 100 sitting in a tub downstairs from when we were young..

i´ve got a bit of tubings but how do i make it that the bended part of the shpis tail fits to the tubing or the other way round?
for now i´ve got some old camping mattress made out of foam. tjis i will ose to create the railings. i think it is wide enough to make it in one go with only one seam...

ok i will try the boiling tomorrow...seems i have to doo it as i am well trhough with the floar done out of cardboard...so i will do the railings faser than i thought i would...

as for "what i did today..." yesterday i told you i´ve ripped the wooden chpostickfloar apart. today i used cardboard in varius sizes to make a patchwork steeled floar. also i tried myself out with some riveting bizzar. i used an old holepuchset tongs and puched them with a hammer directly into the cardboard to only leave some inprint of rivets in the material...
thus making it look detailed but not ruining the flat surface...
hope it is recognizable...
also i had a rather lucky incident in the local mal... i optained two similar high boxes for presents to built the bridge out of them...they will be made to look like built out of curogated metal. i achieved this by using closingbelts (?) from plastic bags we use to keep the bread fresh when the kids go to school...they come various lenghts and in enormous amounts^^ so when still left stuck together they look even unpainted like the real thing...also i plan on optaining sealing rings, the kind you use for plumpings and so on...
thay will act as bubble windows/bullseyes from ships for windows...do you think thats a good idea? or should i do rectangular ones?

also i´m high in shaping up some scratch building ideas to model a steamengine/ heater/bioler thing...any one has some good ideas how i should do some interface devices in that scale? is there a tut on something out there?

well i think that summs it up for now, hope to provoke some reactions out of you fellas now^^...

here are the pics to go with the words...:

floaring...

riveting...

curougated bridge...

cheers, vik

yay progress, your hole punch rivets are a great idea consider that one nabbed! steampunk suits steel plating as well , some would say more, iam glad you went this way , as it will save you loads of time . gotta say i like your workstation , you have lots of handy tools there.
the sandwhich bag meatl /plastics strips , is also a great idea very flexible and looks like the real deal.
I have not reaserched model steam boilers , but i do have plenty and i mean plenty of pics on victorian age engine rooms. they might help you identify parts that yoy could use!
will post some pics when i find em on the comp!

i bought some wire on ebay today very cheap £1 for 22 metres lol
good for modeling barb wire but i bet it would come in handy

Is looking very good now with the "rivetted" floor and the idea for the corrugated look is a nice touch, all this ironmongery is so good for that airship!

got me package due to christmas decoration of that wire too, about two weeks ago...works like a charm. also i use it and twist several wireparts into a length of it by means of a drilling machine...works like a charm and you get lovly detailed cables and well cables as well, damn you in english there are so few words sometimes...
that lokomotive looks like someone went wild with a rivetinggun...cool nevertheless...
seems like i have to come up with a wheel as well and a belt...gives the engine so much more powerlook...

in a thread, cant find it in the minute, they talked about not using bendy bits of straw to built bend of pipes, cause it doesnt look right....well since i went steampunk i definatly need lots of pipes but how to do bend then if not that way?...
maybe using big cables from hardwarestore??would that look the part?...

i often think i cant steel so much of your inspirational work from you as i dont want to be a stalker, but often i think there is no use as to not copy some of your work...waht else tere is as to get sinpiared by things you do? so in short well seeing some of my ideas being mastered in your hand sound like something i want to see^^. do you have a holepunch smaller than 2mm? that would look far better...sadly i dont own such a thing...but you have to make do with what you´ve got i guess...

cheers mate, vik

I do recall that some pipes that needed a bend used to be cut, and then welded back together at angles. so, if you cut some tubes snip off an angle, and then re-glue them you would have that old fashioned, and possible leaky "L" bend in your pipes that would fit the theme.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/22 23:53:29

Post by: Viktor von Domm

Pipe-L sound good, if somewhat tedious to do in lots of bends...the everlasting conundrum do it right or do it quick...

must take a look as to what types of pipes i´ve got...

thanks Wii^^ stay tuned more to follow, be sure of that^^...

and nothing else is needed here^^ without wild ideas this wouldn´t happen at all...
same with that DIY weathering powder...who would have thought that...by the way whats the main difference between pastel chalk and normal(school- ) chalk?

by the way, i do that stuff with a drill and some pieces of wire, drill/spin them together, might that look good as pipes? there would then be no need with actual bends then as it can bend to my merest whim^^

I really like the look of the balloon but not a fan of the placement of the deck... But still looks awesome. How does a balloon balance of the center of mass is not at its lowest point possible... See what I mean? But TBH it wouldn't look near as good on the bottom. When my exams are over ill get my main computer back and can photoshop up something of a new look. To explain something.. cbf typing it haha.

Maybe have something along the lines of steampowered propeller generater like this tug boat?

Here are some pic's for the propeller ideas i found
Use the propeller mount and base for this, well something like it?

ähme, concerning the chalked weathing powder, i thought it must be still painted after aplying, did i get the whole idea behind weatheringpowders wrong, there not only fro structure/surface to use but to color as well? ups...

completly misunderstood that it seems...then it is quite understandabl there is a difference beween types of chalk...

the propeller is exactly like i want it to be looking. the engine looks also like i want it... well kind of...its a mixture of what i´ve got and wahts looks the part...i´m experimenting at the moment, dryfitting and stuff... i guess some lego will get involved too...

as for balance and ofcenter...well the engine and boilers will be sitting in the backthe bridge will be sitting midlle to front so i hope it will even out...
as for placing matter on a baloon, every kid has done that i guess and knows the outcome...bounce...^^
but as this is sifi/ fantasy.,..i definatly aply to the rule of cool here...
as a reminder of how in a way i want this baby to look like:

i just vary this a bit as i wont have an actual airfield on top instead some weapons and stuff...

Re pipes

For a piece of Necromunda industrial terrain I used some scale plastic airplane kit sprue.
It usually has a round section and often has curved corners.

Ideally I would have cut the corner bend offand attach slightly wider discs that act as bolt plates. Then attach the straight pipes.

To save time I simply glued styrene strips around.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
With regard to the flight deck, it might be wirth adding some tie downs, for the aircraft. will try and find a suitable illustration but given the excellent rivetting it should be an easy addition if you feel up to a bit of extra detailing.

keep up the good work Vik

any chance you could CUT into your blimp, and place that wooden floor you have like the airfield view? That would look more sharp and clean looking.

i know waht you want to say and i aggree with you, but i wont cut into the blimp. it did cost me a fair amount of my nerves. but in the next days i will flesh out the deck- blimp intersecting part and then you might think otherwise...i hope so^^

at chibi:

i have some smaller scale tank sprues and some aircraftspues as well will check if the´ve got some round and curvy sprue ends...sond like a good idea...also i love your softdrink watertank... from what did you do the detail work on the upperpart and heck all the aperatures like wheels and stuff?? thats exactly as i see my boiler to be done...

please explain tie downs, as i again reach my language skills...ah checked online for translation... so in short you mean ties and cabels to tie it down wehn parked in the backyard? yes? i will do so, it is in the detailplan, wouldnt dream of letting that kind of realism out^^

Thanks Element

Vik the star like things used to anchor the planes on deck are called tie downs. Stops expensive machinery sliding over the side of the carrier!
You can get ready made ones but how you have done the rivetting could easily be adapted. I may borrow the idea for a deck diorama

The other thing that would be a simple job is to paint some lines on the deck. (or use decals if you have any.)
Again will try and sort out some examples.

The wheels were mostly from a 1/76 scale StugIV that got trashed by a clumsy electrician. They are a tad thick for the scale but I needed something cheap and quick
Other parts were from a Apache helicopter kit that was too rubbish to build as an Apache helicopter!
If you have any spare parts from your kit builds it might be worth having a look

now i understand you chibi...but i have to tell you there is are no plans that involve plane flight. so in short this will be more a landingplatform for vertical uplifting aircraft like ballons and small zeppelins...

i have some tank and some aircaft sprues that i should check for bits to use...the thing is almost anything in original that looks like crap can look tremendously good when painted for 28mm scale, its like a special form of camo to thing^^

as for ties etc i thought you´ve meant hanging cables when the big thing is parked...like ships do when they are at the harbor...

what i can see the wheels are the thing that gives your slurpy creation the spark of life... truly they look like the handles of the waterpipes in the shed of my old gandpa...i picture them exactly like this in my memory^^

today i cant present pics as my camera is in possesion of my wife which will use it at work for something or other...so expect updates in the evening CET...^^

Vik, if you have left over parts from Russ and Chimera kits, like the small handles that can be glued to the side of the things, then you have tie downs already! ^^

small parts that you may have overlooked can fill in for other things similar to them in nature, I love it! I can see those surrounding your VTOL pad. It just depends upon how many of the small hand grips you have lying about in a bitz box.

I've decided to build one myself too. As now im free for the summer. I can build a frame... but cant think of anything to use as like the balloon material itself. I was thinking paper mache? I have drawn up some concepts and I will post em later, when I get my camera back.. Damn sister.

please do aqua, there is one decission you have to make beforehand, will the blimp skelleton be outside or inside? inside is the traditional way and if you want to do papermachè i would recommend this. i had lots of bad moments and swearing with the other side^^...
but i wanted this archaic look of an exoskeleton...

at agro:
jep i will do so and it is suitable for lots of other things...maybe one day you all will see a scratchbuild tank from me that way. also i would go so far as to say this technique is made for orks...

so ladies and gentlemen,
time for some updates.

i´ve been working on the building that will host the command and bridge to steer that giant of a vessel...
out of the before mentioned boxes i no modeled a two storey "shed"...
doors and windows are still in the process of shaping. quite in fact i need for this some help. i want to bullseys and i´m not that good in cutting cardboard round so for now i used feltdisks for gliders of chairs...so that the chairs do not hurt wooden floars... they´re thick and have a texture that i don´t associate with window frames...what to do?
door will be easier i guess so as it doesn´t have to be a circle... so basicaly i need a hint how to shape two overlaying circles to form a bit of recognizable texture. and i need to do it on the cheap side as i have to do at least 12 of them, maybe more...
for now i used these felt things and hammered a circle in them by means of a punchholer of the larger kind...

also i am now heavy in the wip for the heating/boiler device to have the first part of an engine for the airship. also, no pics of that i cout two parts the size of the deck out of foamcore, the pink one to later form/carve the hull of the deck out of it...this will maybe get a bit nasty as i don´t own a hot wire cutter and will involve creating angles in the foamcore and so on...

well i guess i´ve wrote enough for the done work and now is the time to show the work in the fesh so to speak...:

upper storey of the bridge shed with mentioned bullseys...

closeup of felt gliders with hammered circles...

the tool i used, that makes some nasty wholes i tell you^^...

the bridge outer scenery with the commanding stuff in black anger as all is still not painted...even them...

please notice the use of the nice flowers on the rim of the railing...

command staff on deck with shed...

vessel as is for now in last action wip...

thanks for stepping by, do come again and maybe leave a comment or some critics...whatever you feel is necessary.

Oh I'm sure it will look the part whn painted - but it wouldn't hurt to put a top rail on the rim of the bridge and some kind of detail underneath it - Gothic arches? or maybe something a bit more 1900

hadn´t thought about that yet....hmmm... toprailings made out of sprue?? cool. and gothik detail? well i wanted to do not so many skulls and no aquillas when possible...the arches i can possibly do on the flowered railing maybe? what do you think?

also if i can pull that up i could do some gaslights? zthat would ceratinly add a bit of the old victorian flavor, non?

Hey mate , i like the fact you made a deck for the minis , it makes more sense, you can actually use it in games as well.
now you have to identify that steampunk look, i think your engine and gas lamps will go a long way in achieving this, as for you undercarriage , i agree with weety in that a gothic look would work well , maybe look towards the eifel tower for inspiration, i have a link to the great worlds fair of 1900 in paris, a collection of photos from the event , i have found them extreemley helpful when designing a steampunk style look. , i think archways of card holepunched through may resemble steel girders!

if i can make enough progress about the boiler i will show it as well, i have roughly used your lokomotive link you posted. will look nicely when done. should i built it on a platform? also i will attach a big wheel for transmission the force to the propellerengine...this will prvide a scratchbuilders fun as much as possible^^

i think your right about the building being a bit to big, but there is now no going back. i have droped the fist idea of a kind of aircarrier type of airship. there will be a sidekick vessel tho but not many others landing and taking of from it. with the teamengine in the back, the bridge in the midlle and some heavy weapons up front there will be little room left for leasure place... maybe i should do the boilder smaller...i´ll post later pics of the soon to be boiler and i´m always open to suggestions...

at agro, if i had an airbrush i would definatly meddly with steampunk 1:1 weapons. i just love the look of a gatling gun...

at shrike:

for now i havnet thought any further than that this airship will be a kind of floating terrain piece...

and to neil, well fluff, i will probably think hard , really hard about writing some stuff for that ship and the whole universe of quenie vikky... but i´m a bit afraid to post long texts here on dakka with my crappy english knowledge to all those many native writers here...

anyway now to some things more basic:

i´ve done some (forme anyways) important work for the boiler...
built a hatch from an old fotocapsule and some legos and some binders for cables...

after that there will be a boring long work of riveting that thing up. after that i want to try out neils idea with puched cardboard to mimik gridded steel...

so here are the pics:

total view of hatch and front of boiler, this will be a very intesive area to rivet around...
(bit blurry)

detail view of the hatch, in the flesh it is level to the ground and not so cocked...expect a lot of brass here^^

and the backside of the boiler with some lego based stop cocks made from steering wheels^^

at least from the backside there will be a pipe coming out to fuel the engines on the deck...and also the engine for the massive soon to be made proppeller to get propulsion into the airship...

thanks and comment like hell^^

For dials what I sometimes do to make aircraft instrument panels is to
paint the dial white (you could use correction fluid)
paint it black
scratch off the black paint with a needle to make the white line show through.

If you have some round section plastic or better still round section tube you could slice off bits to make the bezel (That is the brass rim that holds the glass)
Biros might be useful

hmmm thats some interessting thoughts you have sent me^^, that will making going to sleep really hard...
well i have soe tubing and also i could use pins on our corkwall to use too. that correction fluid tip i will defiantly try out. sound really cool...if it works thats a real timesaver and worry saver...

aren´t biros a bit small in diameter? i have some i wanted to use as gunbarrels in my bitsbox...now come to think of i have some good looking odd ends from a pencil i could use...

half of the fun is rumaging around a bits or odd ends box^^

thanks mateys, will have a rest for now, read you all in the morning...

cheers, vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/29 23:31:26

Post by: Chibi Bodge-Battle

Possibly Vik
but I usually work in 1/72 scale so biros are too big!

The outer casing of a disposable pen might work, but if yo have suitable tubes then that is sorted.
If you have some gloss varnish a dab on the dial will nicely do for the glass.

at draglide:

welcome to the rank^^, and also welcome to the rank of airship meddlers^^
seems where getting more and more^^

at chibi, its rather sad that i cant have aquick look in the gallery for your stuff. would love to see something from it. 1/76 scale sound very hard to do...but lots of cheaper models to go for...its always the same money=time. either way the more you want to save up on the one the more you have to spend on the other...there is no way around it.
later this day i will do some mockups. late in the night i had a quick rumarage around in the odds ends box and found quite interessting objects to use...also what do you think about adding a console beside the boiler. something wioth lots of dials and levers and athermomenter lkie tube of glas for measuring water in the boiler?

thank you all for your great help, this is waht truly makes this thread fun for me^^

yours vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/30 21:21:03

Post by: Viktor von Domm

so fellas i took your suggestions to heart and went wild on the logo box of my kids. fear not they´re pretty willing to contribute stuff to my builts.
as the following pics are again only wip pics some of the vision is surley lost seeing it all natural...

the part of the round object on the left side with the cross in the middle will look like:

its made from an old pencil casing and sawed off mostly...

the bigger round and rectangular object is from a spray cleaner inside the spraygunpart...will be something of a monitor/seethrough window to view the inside of the boiler.
rest is legoparts like backpacks, levers and also see those two disks on the far left? there from drapeholders, the things that keep the cloth of your drapes from falling... the also will be kind of manometers...

so here is the next instalment of the boiler now with console as advertised...

if you want to add something or just praise me^^ feel free to deliver, also the odd comment is apreciated too...

i have to add some pipes as to transfer the steampowered energy to the engines for propulsion and so on...where should i place them? its kind of crowded now on that boiler thing^^ also i wanted to add a big wheel of sorts to the thing...should i still do that?

vik

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/30 21:57:24

Post by: monkeytroll

Drive pipes I'd put above the original lego wheels you put in place, two pipes one over each wheel set. As for another big wheel, I don't think it's necessary, but extra wheels/cogs/levers never hurt do they

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/11/30 22:07:06

Post by: Viktor von Domm

^^ yep thats what i thought too, about the position of pipes And extra wheels and cogs...
saw a tut on terra genesis how to make cool looking cogs from feltpens and marker hats...this boiler has been a tough piece to think up, but now that so much stands before me i want to paint it. but i swore an oath to built the whole thing before the painting can start... must compose myself...

For troops you should toss in some necron legs for steampunkish cyborg look. Just an idea would instead of having just propellers add platforms with small buildings to the sides with more jet enginey feel.

as for the necron legs and arms maybe...that sir is a very cool idea. as it happens to be i still have some arts lying around i thought i would never use...cool thanbk you^^

as fro my promised pics of mock up engines i cant provide them. my efforts havent produced showable products. i seem to be unable to create propellers or anything near it ...have quite a good body for the engine bute the actual mechanics i find quite hard to built...

nice idea
Have chucked tose away that my daughter got free from the Beano
Still have a couple of small ones.

Bah two helicopters but only one set of rotors with 3 blades
2" diameter.
may still have some larger knocking about but not sure.
any use to you Vik?

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/12/01 23:19:55

Post by: Draglide12

The idea was a large platform off to the sides of the central structure. These platforms have engines on the ends (2-4 inch pvc for a picture, about -8 inches to the tip from landing platform) These platforms have some small buildings and aa guns to give it more of a flying carrier than flying landing pad feel. just an idea, like it as is too.

Imperial Steam Punk mounted Airship fellas to look at^^ @ 2010/12/01 23:35:36

Post by: Viktor von Domm

actually i dont really know how big rotors have to be...the engines will be placed beside the deck and the blimp...since i havent built the deckhull i cant really say for sure as to how large the could be. i will definatly do a mock pic to show waht i´ve meant and to better show what i want to achieve... thanks for the offer chibi.
by the way i ask again would you provide a link for a view of your talents? i am seriously interessted...

the thing with the engines and the rotors is i have to ideas. either do biger rotors and fewer engines OR make smaller rotors (more like fans of jets...) and more engines then...
either way would look good.

here are some "products" i up until now hadn´t deemed fit to show...

engine body with "link" to shiphull, wont be seen in later wip´s tho...

sorry excuse for lazyness this was an easy mock up with some bottlecaps cut and brought together by nail...

so are the engines like , jet engines? so you could have about four of these ... or one big one ? or all of them! i think they jet engines look exatcly like the real deal. and you should use these i think! just have a huge prop at the back and these for steering. nice scratch build mate.
