They're latest stuff from the Best of 00-10 album doesn't really match Velocifero. I mean its still alright to listen too, but doesn't really have the depth that that one did. ^^ The last gig that I managed to get to of theirs must have been over a year ago though, and I haven't catched up on much of what their doing now (I hear Helen's doing her own album, hopefully it'll still have oomph to it). They came up on one of my old mate's Ipod's during our dayly playlist of shame in Art Class, and that pegged me onto them. Cut a couple of years later and its still a bitch to find people that've even heard of them. ^^'
Heh, Bronson. The women I know hate me to no end when I mention that that they're flocking to that stripper movie to see Tom Hardy naked, whilst their boyfriends have already ogled him (and with a hell of a mustache too) in that movie...
* Also, reminds me of that great movie Forrest Gump (need to get around to reading that second novel some time...). ^^'
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and the fantastic credits theme from Watchmen. Felt that it was so light hearted (and fitting for the time period) after that interpretation of the graphic novel. Shame Mr Moore's too stubborn to watch it though.
Seriously, does anyone not think it was a good adaption of the original? The reason the author gave for not watching it was his friends have said the rest of the adaptions didn't give the message he was trying to put across right. I don't see that with Watchmen. =/

It might have something to do with the fact that Alan Moore is a bitter, bitter man and a giant ass.
He does make great comics though.
Just got through playing Half Life: Source (the nostalgia of the Quake engine makes the original better however). Now we just have to wake till Valve get around to make the damn third one (...or Portal 3, though where the last one left off kind of makes it being a Half Life sequel necessary. Chell verses the Combine would be awesome though). XD
Just watched Beyond the Black Rainbow , fethed up movie. The soundtrack was really good. If you like crazy trippy movies by people like Kubrick, Cronenburg, or Lynch check it out.
Also which flavor of Korean girl from Sistar do you prefer? Amber (aka Punky Spice XD) is probably my favorite. Few women can pull off a short/pixie hair cut and when they do... damn.
my girlfriend ditched me a week back - and the chorus from Megadeth's "the scorpion" reminded me of her:
"As I climb onto your back, I will promise not to sting
I will, tell you what you want to hear and not mean anything
Then I, treat you like a dog, as I shoot my venom in
You pretend you didn't know, that I am a scorpion"
(because frankly, she treated me like )
Also, this struck a chord (no pun intended)
"My self, I'm centered in
There's nothing else, there's never been
And I dream, to be left alone
With the sadness, the madness of my own
Look deep, into my soul
It's black as coal, like a bullet hole"
Recently she's been hinting that she wants to get back together, and now "Poison" by Alice Cooper seems appropriate...
*shrugs*
Been listening this whilst walking up the twelve flights of stairs to class every morning. ...The bit with the lift is how I feel when I can never get on one every time. XD
You can't go wrong with the Bluetones, its a shame that they are so underrated.
This does have a very strange video.
You can never have too much punk.
Tengger cavlary isn't bad, a bit too much throat singing for my liking though. In theory I like Folk metal but the only band that I actually like is Turias, what really lets the others down is poor vocals; any suggetions?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Holy flying rodent excrement, in a single day Amaranthe has SHOT to number two on my top five list and is now in the same category as Nightwish as bands I will listen to till I drop dead barring some INCREDIBLE catastrophe.
@ AK Marine I respect your opinion, but that is the epitome of every thing I hate. I must listen to the Dethalbum III ten times to make up for those three vids. I would shag her tho....

Now now, it's still better then pure pop, there's room in metal for all of us thankfully.
I've been listening to a bit of horror punk recently. It's an underrated genre and few people know bands that play in that style (apart from the Misfits, everyone knows them or have at least seen their logo).
Calabrese are quite a good one. Been listening to their new stuff for a long time.
Okay, pretty tame by metal standards actually, but I'm getting back into them recently. Hmn, good looking german guys just do it for me I guess.
* On a side note, I'm reading the novel Fatherland right now (the edition with the big Swastika on the cover). So picture a guy in an army jacket, a seemingly fascist themed novel, and German metal playing full blast in his headphones. Now stick an elderly man with a poppy on his breast pocket on the train seat across from me. That was my train ride for a week. He stopped sitting in the same carriage as me after I said, "auf geht kameraden" to him as I left the train...

it doesn't matter if rammastien are 'tame' by metal standards, they are still freakingly cool!
And Kudos for the poppy thing....the Germans had to fight too....

Ooooh, unlucky! I've never heard this band before, it actually sounds really cool! Fatherland is an epic book, I really enjoyed it. Is it the first time you're reading it?
Yeah, I just finished it last night (a bit after I posted here). I've seen parts of the film however. To me it really does have a feeling that its 1984 written with hindsite (ie 1984 was really about the Nazis, this book just explicitly made it clear). Not to say that it isn't anything more than that though, but there is some clear Orwellian plot devices at play in it.
Next up? Redshirts by John Scalzi. We in the UK have been waiting monthes for that damn thing to come out. I gave the hot young thing behind the counter in my bookshop a few death threats (as the author advised), and she quickly found me a copy. =)
I loathe Katy Perry, but then again, Polka's great.

I enjoy them because their music videos can be pretty political, or at least have greater meanings to them. I mean take Ich Will, I'm getting the tone that anyone acting out against the system is publicized by the media and worshiped by the masses. Then it takes another step and says that doing this is just a step away from allowing a regime to take control (the Swat turn into Black shirts and the band go up on a podium with heavy Fascist themes, the dead band member being martyr). Then again Ohne Dich takes another route is more about brotherhood, but it has a bit of politics in it too. The lead singer is zealous, but the others seem to follow him. They see that he's still holding true to his old ideals, but not able to change. He dies at the end seeing the world as he wants it, and his views untarnished, but inevitably it will soon change. In a later video(Haifisch) its shown he was killed by another band member (note that only few of the band show care for his death, the others have expressions that imply that is was necessary), further hinting at this point. Meh, I get hints of the Lenin in it, but really this is just my take on their music videos, they're probably not the established messages that the band wanted.
Oh, and I had family on either side of that conflict, my mother's were on both sides of the fence in the death camps, whilst my father's, whilst being Irish, enlisted at various points in the war for the British. I'm not in the military like its been in my family for a few generations now, but most of my cousins on my mother's side are. I always liked going to my grandad's house when I was young because it was literally covered in the remnants of a military career. Walls were lined with weapons and banners, alongside trinkets from countries I didn't even know about when I was that young. He'd fought for the British as an emigrant, before enlisting in the French Foreign Legion, and as he put it, "went around the world knicking stuff". Both sides of that war were just common guys fighting for their countries, its the guys at the top that were signing the death papers (yeah, Cross of Iron is a favorite of mine).
Ack, turning my own thread into a political discussion. XD
0.o A Dead Poem? This isn't a conservative site, no need to censor something on the odd chance it might offend someone (lest they become a frothing mess whenever they enter the metal section of a record shop...).
I was thinking more the whole "Rotting Christ" thing, but you're still right. Although, I've been modded on another forum, albeit one much, much smaller than Dakka for posting Rotting Christ music, so that's made me especially leery of posting that particular band.
to make post relevant to thread (and, well, to make myself somewhat hypocritical for not spoilering this, since this should be, technically far more offensive to western religious sensibilities than even Rotting Christ):
The favorite band of the lead character in the Night Watch novels series, these guys were always a dirty pleasure of mine. (Though I was punched a few times by an ex for having them on a few playlists...)
And yes RatBot, I meant the Rotting Christ thing. I was just inferring that someone getting offended by a band's name is a tad silly, so I took the Dead Poems bit clearly what you were trying to shield the world from. XD
The thread is way too slow. Can't you just post a name and a non-embedded link like normal, bandwidth-conscious people?
I'm not trying to be an ass, but I seriously don't feel like waiting several minutes to load a single page just to read a post that interests me. Anyone's who interested in what you post will click the link. Embedding is unnecessary, and speaking personally, discourages people from posting.
Sex Pistols. Lots of it. It makes good walking music. Plus, it's the only thing on my iPhone that hasn't been played to death that's in english.

0.o Buy a faster computer dear. I'm sitting here in college on the five year old pieces of crap and it loaded this page in a second.Embedding allows people to watch the video on the fly without having to load a new webpage. If you just want to quickly try a song you can just click on it instead of having to spend more time loading (youknow, with bandwidth being at such a premium).
Gak, I am from the same area (Kalamazoo, MI) as these guys and still can't believe they made it out of all the others. So, thanks to you, I am listening to some of the bands from that time on the scene.
Just found this guy out. Amazing music, not sure who to possibly compare him to. Kind of like Clint Mansell, I guess. But not really... Just listen to him, okay?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Have to say, Cheesecat's taste is really starting to impress me.
They grow up so fast! *sniff*
Thanks, I think it's a lot easier be knowledgeable about good music in general now that Wikipedia, YouTube, online reviews and the internet exist, I mean that's how I find out most of my stuff. But it also makes me a bit snobby in comparison to my friends who are more casual about
music and often feel uncomfortable about some of the stuff I listen to (like the Stooges, Velvet Underground, etc, then again those are bands aren't very easy to listen to in the first place) so I usually play something more safe (the Beatles, David Bowie, etc, which are great as well but for
different reasons) or just don't play anything at all at the risk of annoying one of my mates. I prefer listening to full albums at a time rather than individual songs because I like how the songs play off or relate to each other in the album. I have listened to a lot of your musical
recommendations as well and they tend to be pretty good but I suppose that isn't too surprising considering you're a musicologist.
Fafnir wrote: Cheesecat, you just keep getting better and better.
Funnily enough, I used to not really care that much for Velvet Underground and Joy Division but as I started listening to the Stooges and Ramones (they pretty much changed my perception of music altogether) I started to see that you can create bold, subtle, unique, interesting and genuinely
intelligent artistic statements without having to have a whole a lot of musicianship or by playing in a minimalistic style (not to say I don't like more technically demanding bands I am a fan of prog rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, etc after all).

Thanks, great find btw defiantly see what you mean by the similarities to Joy Division/VU it's nice to listen to something more recent for a change as well as most of the music I listen to is from the 60's and 70's (not to say other decades don't have good stuff it's just that's what I often keep
Yeah, Interpol are a top band. That whole album is great. They have other stuff but they never bettered 'Turn on the Bright Lights'. It's a lost classic, IMO.
Automatically Appended Next Post: There's a band from the UK called The Horrors you may also like, incidentally.
It's been a slow day at the orrifice so here's what I have listened to so far.
Jefferson Aeroplane - White Rabbit: The Bassline on this always gets my mind racing and it all just fits so well together.
Spoiler:
The Moody Blues - Knights in White Satin: Beautiful and haunting song, absolutely love the chorus and makes my shiver when it's cranked up to the max.
Spoiler:
Bjork - Army of Me: I watched Suckerpunch the other day and it had an awesome soundtrack and an I think, different version of this on it. But this version is one of my all time favs, it says I will f*** you up if you cross me.
Spoiler:
Joy Division - Love will Tear us Apart: This is my essential pub song and always goes on when I hit the jukebox, it's also my first port of call when I get on the youtube. Makes me happy.
Spoiler:
In my car on my mix CD I have that I am listening too
Air - All I need
De'lacy - Hideaway (my favorite song of all time I think)
Lovestation - Teardrops
Nelly - Ride with me
Les Rythmes Digitales - Hey You What's That Sound
Tweet - Oops oh my
Arcade Fire - Wake up
Linkin Park - Points of Authority
Crowbar - Existence is Punishment
Urban Cookie Collective - The Key The Secret (I can't stand this anymore)
Nine Inch Nails - We're in this together
St Etienne - Only love can break you heart
JC Chasez - Blowin' me up (with her love)
KLF - 3am Eternal
Kelis - Trick ME
Kelis with Andre 3000 - Millionaire
The Rome Album by Dangermouse & Daniel Luppi (occasionally featuring Norah Jones and Jack White) My favourite song from the album, with a suitably disturbing video.
Well, it's midnight here, which means it is Officially 20 Dec 2012. Some people believe the world will end tomorrow. I happen to think that's a load of horsegak, but I figure it's just as good an excuse as any for a doomsday playlist!
RossDas wrote: Heavy metal versions of Christmas songs! Caught a few of these on Bruce Dickinson's radio show years back and they're usually a good laugh.
I love the Muffs, but I forgot I love the Muffs. One of the dubious pleasures of youtube Is rediscovering bands you loved from decades passed, It doesn't always end well. So its all Muffs all the time at the minute.
And they were one of the very few 90s punk bands that were actual punk and not Green Day pop punk nonsens.
And getting back into a bit of Bile as well, quality tunes.
this second, Lullaby by The Spill Canvas. at work I just throw on my old ipod with a few thousand songs and let it shuffle, I honestly dont even notice its playing unless someone points out a song but definatly notice when its silent.
Not quite as good as Raise Your Tiny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven or Yanqui U.X.O (my personal favourite of theirs, even though RYTFLAH tends to have a stronger following), but it's still great.
I was so excited when I found out Underworld was doing the opening ceremony. And I was definitely not disappointed. I don't really care about the Olympics themselves, but this soundtrack had me glued to the ceremony.
I disagree with your statement of Inflammable Material being one of the best Punk albums of all time they do the punk style well but they don't really add anything to the genre like punk albums such as the Ramones, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, London Calling, Double
Nickels on the Dimes, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, etc do. What separates a good album from a great album to me is a great album not only does there genre justice but also takes it into a new direction or it invents a new style of music altogether (like the Ramones is often cited by
many music critics and musicologists as the first Punk Rock group) imo.

A great album's primary quality is that it sounds good and inflammable materiel is quintessentially a good album. I would rate it above anything by the sex pistols and while I am fond of the Dead Kennedys did Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables really do anything markedly different? One of my favourite punk bands are Bad Religion and they can't be described as unique (aside from the quality of their song writing).
Personally I am wary of lauding music simply for taking a new direction, it is the quality that matters, and at the end of the day there are no correct answers in matters of taste

Well, the reason I find Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables to be a great album is it combines the bizarre humour of the Ramones and the political angst of UK punk, the bullet fast vocals, the surf rock and rockabilly twang gives it a bit of a hook, also being a hardcore punk band they're
obviously more fast and abrasive than your typical punk rock band these elements create a memorable experience and isn't just a simple rehash of the genre they took other older ideas combined them in a way that hadn't been done before creating something new. Another concept Jello
Biafra does is imitating the caricature of his enemies, I don't think the Clash or Sex Pistols ever did that, I know they would point out there disagreements with society and politics but I don't remember there ever being an element of mimicry in there songs. Never Mind the Bollocks, is
pretty important album for punk (and in rock in general) because there wasn't any other albums at the time that really matched it in terms of controversy, vulgarity and the lyrical themes were fairly original for the time (songs about abortion, attacking the monarchy, attacking certain record
labels, dissing the New York punk scene, etc I don't think that had been done before), some of it comes across as cheap shock tactics but really not many bands before sounded like them (sure stuff like the Ramones and Stooges are both aggressive and primitive as well but they took
that style in a different direction). And out of all the bands that tried to imitate the Sex Pistols success few if any have matched there infamous attitude, also there trashy look and political dissatisfaction was reflective of the world around them (70's UK was going though an economic
