Well, that adds another dimension to the piece, to be certain.

Shame you won't have a piece Theo. It looks like you have a pretty good solution there though. I have used plexiglas as a flooring too. It works well.

Rah Rah sis-boom-bah! Push 'em back, push 'em back.! Way Back!

Do they have cheerleaders in the UK?

Entry received M0rdain, and info forwarded to the other Judges. Thanks for the earliness.

Also, is it possible to have multiple people on a PM on this forum, like a CC sort of thing?

Reminds me of the old commercial for nfl Europe years ago where they showed all the hot European cheerleaders... Then they all raised their pompous and their hairy airpits looked like they all had cousin it living under them .

Post by: M0rdain

We don't really have cheerleaders, the closest we have is over exuberant parents shouting at their child's team.

LoER Terrain Contest: Round 11: On The Road--WINNERS ANNOUNCED @ 2014/10/02 22:53:30

Post by: Red Harvest

Y'all had few cheerleaders were in the UK last week-end for the NFL game at Wembly, but nice to hear they are not normally around. I fail to understand how US football could appeal to you Brits. It exemplifies the worst aspects of the US, violence punctuated by committee meetings. (A quote by George Will, BTW. ) Not a fan of the NFL, me. National Felons League.

At least the parents just shout, or do they bring those infernal cowbells too?

Ah well, back on topic. Looks like many people are going to make it to the finish line. This is a good thing, even though it means much more work for the judges. There is beaucoup quality work here. Inspirational and imaginative.

There is no shame in failure. There is only shame in never trying. I think most people who undertake creative endeavors of any sort have failed many many times.

Hey all.

Made some good progress lately. Hopefully be finished this weekend. Or soonish' .
All the progress is amazing, some brilliant ideas everyone.

I changed my mind from my original bridge idea to a 'Ruined Drive Thru'. Sprang to mind as I was thinking what goes with roads and traveling... food.

Here are a few of my WIP pictures.

Despite sitting this one out, it surprises me that coincidently I've been working on some roads lately. Ah, no, that isn't me saying that I'll be making a late entry. Nah, just that I think I'll be knicking a fair few ideas from this thread before its over. Good work so far lads.

Entries received from Littletower and xXweaponprimeXx, so we are at four entries.

A brief note: We need to be able to see all parts of the entry, and in focus too. So before you hit the send button, make sure that the images you submit are ones that the judges can work with.

And the excitement builds....

Just a gentle (I hope) reminder to one and all, based on some things Dr H noted and mentioned to me. I find that he is a superb addition to the judging staff.

If we judges find that we really need more photos, or better photos, we will PM the contestant with a request. We want everybody to be able to present their best work in the best way possible.

Remember; If we can't see it in the photos, we can't judge it...
...and you're more likely to "not gain" marks for the good bits we can't see, than "not loose" marks for any hidden sins.

Post by: GamesEtc

Not dead, just busy and had to decide: Groceries or Internet?

Work up to this point:

Completed tire spikes and ready for priming/painting

The board I decided to use that was cheap and effective was the back of a dry erase board. I attached the cork board with rubber cement and weathered it up as well as roughed up the edges a little. I wanted this road to appear to be fairly new, but not as if just recently paved either. I also tried to add some depth to the areas that will be grass by attaching some styrene to make it less flat. Flocking and such to come. Using Frog Tape I painted the lines onto the road, again, not weathering them too much so as to look like the road was made within the last year or so. It bled a little through the tape so a little clean up is needed.

The barricades are mostly done. I just need to get the reflectors painted and add some details in the painting.

The street lights are made up almost entirely of pens, using the tube and caps as well as that little end piece. These are almost ready for priming, just need to file off the little "made in china" spots on them. The circuits used for this will be two parrellel sets of LEDs, 4 white in one and 2 red/1blue in the other, which should eliminate my need of a resistor which so many guides insist on having. The whites, naturally are in streetlights while the other will be in the guard shack. The guard shack will also be making use of Fiber Optic cable so as to add more realism to various spots inside the shack as well as outside the shack. All lights will be controlled by a single switch located inside the air conditioning unit on the roof of the guard shack.

So, I am expecting to be done either Sunday night or Monday afternoon, weather and kids permitting.

PM with link to gallery sent.

Didn't quite get it to where I wanted, and looking at pics can see lots of other bits I've missed paintwise...but that's not the worst of it.

I dropped it earlier today, so some of the tentacles are a little shorter than they were, and several bits had to be re-done and slime-strands re-attached.... ....and it turns out it's not that stable and during a choppy patch in the afternoon it went over again.....more re-working required.

And then I dropped it whilst taking pics.....so only got one pic of the overall thing because for some reason I did detail shots first.......and it's now in several bits again.

Should be fixable, but I just haven't got it in me to try and sort it now, and then try another shoot.....

Still, got something entered

(wheeww... might be my only chance to top your entry at all......as it is such a freaking detailed entry...)

as from my own finishing line... I will be making my own final post in my own thread this very hour...and will write then a pm to red to have it all wrapped up...
(to be frank...didn´t knew I would be able to finish this one...but glad I did nevertheless...)

Congratulations to all, this was a splendid turn-out.

And, wow! Really crap start to the day (getting up at 0500, and then finding out my whole existence has been entirely forgotten by my lift ), made marginally better by using my powers of persuasion to take a day's leave, and now made much better by finding I won And got the hourable mention too! Aww...you guys...you're great...you know that right?

I'll be honest, I was hoping for the honourable mention purely down to the idea, but really didn't expect to place - I guess like most of us, all I can see are the many flaws in my work.

Looking forward to the comments and critiques, and the next comp.....oh, wait.....that's me now isn't it

I'll give it some thought and should have something up by tomorrow - I'm thinking something that can be (but doesn't have to be ) pretty quick and simple as I know peep's time does get eaten up in the coming season).

Thanks to all - paticipants and judges

Post by: Dr H

Well done everyone that entered, and to Red for a great theme and running the competition, and to my fellow judge, Graven, for the hard work in the judging... And it was hard work judging this competition.

The scoring was so tight you wouldn't believe. Every piece had a moment of excellence, ahead of all the others, so you can all hold your heads up high.

Some of the highlights for me:
A serene egg in spitting distance from a bloody splat (M0rdain),
Superb presentation that tricks the eye (Mekugi), and those spray-cans ,
Dead bits of tree and a crazy yellow contraption (Littletower),
Sailing a sea of mud in a moment of peace (xXWeaponPrimeXx),
Little tufts of grass growing from a crack in the wall (Camkierhi),
Moving parts that work for real (Viktor Von Domm),
And a clawed hand holding aloft a large staring eye (Monkeytroll).

There was so many moments like this that make the hard work of judging, worthwhile.

So, to the critiques. I write these out for myself, in the process of judging. They are, therefore, picking at every fault I can find and are all my own opinions; This means I may pick out something that you or others disagree with, I am fine with that and there is no offence meant.

I'm not the greatest modeller out there, but I strive for perfection in all my models, and each one gets the same level of scrutiny that your's get here. This is what you are being compared to; perfection. Everybody will fall short, but that doesn't mean that you are "wrong" or "bad" or that your piece is "rubbish".

I will however, not just point out the faults, but will offer suggestions to what could have been changed to achieve higher marks or things I would have done differently (which may or may not have given higher marks).

I don't just pick out the faults either, I will mention neutral changes or additions (as a personal preference to me, often the addition of tiny details because I like that kind of thing), and I will praise things that I like.

As these are written (by a dyslexic) during the judging process, they can get a bit "stream of conciousness", so if something is unclear, just ask.

With all that in mind, I hope that you find it useful for improving your modelling.

So, in no particular order:
Mekugi:
Spoiler:
Overall a nice piece. Well thought out and put together. Your photos are particularly worthy of praise and are a good example of how to present a model in the real world. However, the harsh lighting can hide details (as well as sins), but you did take enough angles to show everything. Looks to be fairly playable, although some models may have toppling issues in places, and looks to be easily expandable to fill a table.

The expanded polystyrene works well as a basis for the concrete/tarmac, although in places did look a bit too much like polystyrene upon close examination.

Mud/dirt/rocks look great and the small patches of grass look natural. The tall grass bunches look a bit too regular though. There's no in-between, it's short patches of grass and tall bunches of grass, could have done with some shorter grass around the tall grass (would also have hidden where you have glued them down). Those bunches could have also been roughed up a bit and thinned/spread out. They look like someone has come along as tidied them up into bunches of all the same length.

The forgotten/discarded trash is a nice touch. The wheels look good. The spray cans are great. The rhino side though, makes me wonder what's happened to the rest of it. It's a bit too flat to the ground. If the rhino had exploded to the extent to make the rest of the vehicle disappear (I realise that it could just be off the side of the base, some indication of this would help that), then why is this side so relatively undamaged. The rest of the tank can't be buried as, if the ground was that soft, the bridge would have collapsed on to that area. It's just a bit too perfectly side on. Maybe it's a spare side of a rhino that's been "lost"... But as a scratch build, it is perfectly recognisable and a good job.

Painting is very effective. I'm caught in two minds with it really. On the one hand the work appears quite basic, but it is very effective. The graffiti is good and the dirt over that looks perfect. The main problem is the runs of brown; they are largely all the same size/thickness. These could have been improved upon by adding some thinner runs and darkening the centre of others (to show repeated deposits). Some of the tracks are looking a bit too large for the scale. But, on the whole, still very effective. Can't fault the colouration of the mud/dirt, the variation in tones looks very natural.

Good piece, very effective, well presented.

Littletower:
Spoiler:
Nice concept. Well designed and built, with a good layout.
The mountainside: Rock looks pretty natural, in shape and colour. As does the concrete, the texture might be a little too large for the scale, but not so much to cause an issue. The mud is good, a nice dusty/sandy look to it with nice variation to the tones. Good job on the remnants of a tread pattern. The ballast looks the part, but I might have done it a darker colour to contrast with the surrounding mud, whether that would work better, I can't say.

Nice trees/plant-life, like the addition of the dead bits that have fallen off.
Good use of the real rusty metal and a good job matching it on the bits you did paint, the hammered rivets work well.. I liked the idea of the vent in the overhang and it does work well. The metal walkway could have done with something more. Something to give it purpose or make it look less like a piece of metal laid on supports, a hand-rail for example.

The boxes and barrels look the part. Although the barrels would have been a good point to add some extra colour to the piece, the coppery finish to them kind of blends them in to the doors and the rock. The little carrier thing looks good and is a nice use of parts. The picture inside the doors is a good idea (and something I planned on using for when I make a ravine). It may only work from one angle, but it is better than just a black hole. Good idea to set it back and have real 3D things in there to add to the illusion.

And the dodo crane (I bet you thought I'd skipped over that), a very effective build, looks great. To nit-pick I would say the yellow could be smoother in places, the black could have done with a bit more highlighting and the splits in the guitar wire spoil the illusion of hoses a little. I'm not sure about the plough on it either, it looks good and is painted nicely, just the utility of a plough on a small vehicle. Not a major issue, just a personal thing.

Nice overall, can be played on and would work well as a mission objective (capture/defend type thing), but the large base would make it distant from a flat table and will need extensions to give the tracks and path somewhere to go. The angled sides make it look like a display piece but without a story to make it a diorama. It would be possible to create extra tiles to extend this (if you're lucky you could do this for each following competition... ), and I hope to see more like this.

Cam:
Spoiler:
Equal parts craziness, humour, detail and skill. Good work.
The road is very good. Nice texture, good colours. The cobblestone side-street is a good idea. The drains and manhole cover are nice touches. The pavements are nice, with good weathering/damage. The walls look good, but are outshone by the pavement and look a bit lacking in detail, relatively.
I see a couple of slips of the paintbrush (some rusty drain on the kerb for example). The road markings are good. The green line could have spilled onto the leaves there to show a quick a dirty job of whoever had the spray-can, rather than stopping dead at the leaves, but only a suggestion.

The plant-life is good, well placed. Like the little bits growing in cracks etc... The leaf-litter is also well placed. Good Ol' Birch. The 'shrooms possibly could have been better if they were more regularly shaped, some look a little squashed. The other bits of litter are nice, the newspaper in particular. and Holy ... what are those giant worm things with the glowing eyes!?

The rubbish bins, dumpsters, stop sign (although the "STOP" could have been straighter for a sign) and gates are all good additions. I like that you've matched the house numbers on the bins and gates. The dumpsters are a good use of the pill things. The addition of the lift bars are good. Again the writing on them could be neater, but the rust looks spot on. Who's Fred?

The Lamp-posts are great. The shape is good. The ends of the lamp parts could have been tidied up with a little filler and sanding. I like that you've added the wires inside the open one. The OSL from them is great, well executed and thought out with the addition of shadows.

The wreck looks the part. Burnt out, twisted and rusty. The graffiti on it is nicely done again.
The Orks are a nice collection of characters as they tend to be. The skin on them, could do with an extra highlight layer in places, it may be that you are covering too much of the mid-tone with the highlight. Some little slips and some metal bits not painted (back of Mr. Mohawk). The cheerleader... is more terrifying the closer you look... Good work on adding the womanly shape to her. The sculpting could be a little neater along the edge of her top. Colours are good and the shading on her is good.

The Orky racer is nice and Orky. Good build of the engine and I would have said yes to the dozer-blade, as it give the right look to the racer and would be what an Ork would think of after seeing a "real" racing car.

The flag-girl is a good use of the Wych parts. Good effort on the body and arms. The back of her neck could have been smoothed just a little more, or hidden with the painting. The skin tone looks nice, and the tattoo is good. Hair looks nice too (and that is nothing to do with my ginger wych either). And are they "shiny" red PVC trousers she's wearing... Ooo. Good work. The flag is nice. Good job on the many checks. Thinner is good and the tattered look is well done. I like to think that she is about to be scooped up in the Ork's arms, as the alternative is that she is splattered up the side of the Imperial racer. I might have changed the angle of the Imperial racer so it looked like it was going to pass her rather than mow her down (if you look straight on, it appears to be angled towards her).

The Imperial racer is nice. Good shape (better than some the official models). Nice work on the glass, but some of the highlights could have been neater (this shows up more on the crisp, straight lines of imperial things than on Orky things). Good job on the Space Marines. Very good faces and nice colours, but some of the lines are a little rough and the blending could be smoother on the blue. The two with pom-poms are hilarious, especially with that face.

Overall, great job. So many little details I would be proud of. Good build and good painting. Just some little rough edges to both that can be smoothed out.

And the black outsides of the walls would be nicer if they were not streaky... Yes, I look at these things, but I won't be harsh to remove marks from it this time... or will I...

Monkeytroll:
Spoiler:
A crazy idea brought to completion wonderfully well. So much detail it's difficult to know where to start.
Nice use of parts and good job tying them into the structure of the road. The many little details come together to make probably the best representation of chaos out there. What can I see? A hand holding a large eyeball, is that a dinosaur head? rocks, concrete, skulls, cogs (like how they are poking out of a hole), sharp-fanged mouths, fleshy bits, gooey bits, like the swirly area (wouldn't have thought of that), leach like things, tread-plate, stringy gore (nicely done), veins and arteries, something with a long tongue, Giger bits, screaming heads, something chained to a cog-filled area, overlapping sections, twists, a pregnant embryo?, claws, many many tentacles (yay!) and many other random body parts that all come together to create a living strip of the warp.

The modelling is largely seamless, with one thing blending into another. Good use of the crackle medium in many places, the multi-layered areas are a particularly good idea. The painting is equally random and fits the model. Some of the blending could be smoother or more graduated, as some of the colour changes are a little too stark. Nice mixture of matt, gloss and metallic finishes. The painting of the checks, the large eyeball, and many of the heads is good.

The occupants are good and well posed/positioned. Good colour choices on the marine types, makes them stand out from the road in a good way. Some of the painting on them could be smoother or neater in places. The interactions with the more daemonic occupants are well done in such a complex space.
The daemonic occupants are a great mixture of parts and putty work. Some of them really do appear to have personalities and the way they are sprouting from the road give a good sense of the fluid nature of the road.

Great work. A nice and very original diorama. One addition I can think of is an obvious portal with a marine falling/walking/pulled though to show how they came to be trapped there and maybe a body that is being "reclaimed" by the road to show the only possible ending...

The rest of you haven't expressed where/if you want the critiques (I think). Let me know, they are already written and just a ctrl-c ctrl-v away.

Right you are M0rdain:
Spoiler:
Nice idea, very Orky and humorous. Overall, nicely constructed and well thought out concept.
The road surface (cork I believe), looks the part in texture and painting. The broken pieces are a good idea, but the three larger pieces could have been positioned better, they look a bit too much like they have been placed there (unlike the smaller pieces at the edge, which look naturally broken off). Also the shape of those larger chunks are a bit too straight and could have been roughed up a little to look less cut and more broken.

The road markings are a good touch to give it realism and scale. However, I can see where they were added afterwards and have not quite been covered up in painting the dirt that should be obscuring it.

The positioning of the gravel and dirt and rocks feels natural and work well. The big boulder, however, still looks a bit too much like a ball of paper towels up close. From a distance it looks the part though. You could have used a real rock for extra points (for using a material that required no modification or painting).

The blood and gore are good. Looks real enough and the positioning gives a sense of the splat. The trail to the helmet (nicely painted too) is a nice touch. However, where did all the rest of the armour go. Maybe an arm or leg sticking out from under the rock would have sold the idea that the armour had remained under the rock and the inside had been squeezed out like a tube of toothpaste.

The sign is nicely built. Good use of rivets. Simple, but nice ladder. Good addition of the sign/junction number. I'd have liked the white markings on it to be neater, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that they were also done in a rush by the imperium. The Orky marking is suitable for Orky, but could have been better/arty, maybe not, matter of opinion.
The small wood sign is good also. Such is the advantage of coffee stirrers and the like.

The rear of the sign is nice, with some good little touches. The bird's nest is good, but could have been better with some finer elements ("dried grass" or "feathers"). I'd have positioned it differently; birds tend to like to place their nests in secure places where it can't be knocked over easily. So I'd have put it more into the corner (or even on top of one of the posts) rather than on the flat surface, unsupported. I do really like the pattern you got on the egg though.

The Ork, is generally good. The clothing and metals look well done. His skin though, could have done with another highlight layer to give it a bit more definition, especially on the face. The sandwich is great though. Maybe could have done with another layer inside so that he's holding it a bit more firmly.
The lunchbox and thermos are nice additions. Could have been a little neater with the construction (the gap at the top of the thermos draws my eye in particular). Painting could also have used a bit more detail (highlights on the red for example).

The rust and dirt on the platform could be improved with some washes (red/brown for example) and more sparse orange flecks (they look more like the Ork has been walking red paint about the place, rather than rust).

Overall, a nice, fun piece. Can work as both a dio' and playable piece. With room to expand upon for a full table.

K.

Vik:
Spoiler:
Good work, once again showing us why you are the king of all riveters.
The bridge is a nice construction, looks pretty neat and solid. Moving parts are always a bonus, and the design of which looks like it functions well. The riveting looks good and is very straight and regular (with only a couple of little wobbles). The recessed rivets on the road areas are good for practicality and look good, although could have been improved by adding smaller diameter rivets in the holes. The linkages for the chains were a good idea, I sadly don't come across that many bras at the moment, but will keep it in mind for when I do.

The painting on the bridge is nice. The metal is very good, although there are a few spots of red that are a little too bright and could have done with toning down (probably just a splash of brown over them would have been enough). A few flecks (and I mean very few) of orange might have been good for some variation. The green is a good choice (I'll come back to the green later), although it lacks some depth and some areas could be smoother. You appear to have tried some weathering on it with some washes, but you could have gone much further with it (I suspect that you didn't want to overdo it?). There's a couple of sections where you have a dark run down one side and along the bottom; if you had done this, consistently and logically, over all the sections of green it would have really looked good. As it is, it looks a bit like you slipped when washing the metal (these sort of things should be embraced when weathering as splashes and runs will often "fix" themselves to look more natural than you can achieve by hand).

The ground around the bridge is a good effort and is effective from an overall view. The grass areas look fairly natural and not "forced random". Good idea on using pencil shavings for that, I'll remember that when I come to doing large areas. You do appear to have got some variation to the grass colour, but that could have been stronger, as well as adding some brown/bone dry-brushing to areas/edges to show dying patches. Random patches of tall grass or small plants would have added some nice variation and realism, especially along the river bank where plants tend to get carried away.

The road/mud/sand/dirt needed a little more work. But I realise there is a fine balancing act here; playability, disassembly, realism, cost, materials, etc... The roadway is fine as itself, good gravel texture, nice colour (but could have used some more variation in tones). The flat areas where the bridge fits is fine, it needs that to sit flat, but some build-up of gravel around the base of the bridge to show that it is a permanent feature; this could be stuck around the edges of the bridge rather than on the base, meaning you don't have to position it perfectly each time. Also, some dirt from the road could have been added to the lower parts of the bridge's ramps, to show it being dropped up there by vehicles passing over it. Unless that troll is particularly anal about keeping the bridge free of dirt.

The sandy coloured areas that surround everything, being flat doesn't lend itself to realism. It does make it very playable, I'll grant you. But a little texture would have really helped. While you could have covered the whole thing in varying grades of sand/gravel/etc. (which is what I would have done), you could have used the gravel from the road and put it down on the patches you have painted that colour, leaving the sand coloured parts flat. This will have added the texture that you have represented with paint and lifted the whole piece easily. Again, more variation in tones for the sand and dirt across the board would have been a good improvement.

The river, while you seemed disappointed in the cracking of the surface, it is a nice effect for a frosted over (or similar) look. With the barren look of the short, patchy grass, the frozen over river works to give a kind of cold wasteland. With some light grey/white dry-brushing, it would really sell the frosty look.
Or, due to it's colour and that it needs a bridge to cross the modest span, it could be a horrible chemical river that forms a hard crust at the surface. That explanation works quite well with the texture you have there actually. I like the variation in colours you got in the river and that makes it look all the more real, even with the cracked surface.
I would have done the river much wider, at least beyond the bridge (build a bridge at the narrowest point), as it is, the tank looks like it could cross the river a might not even get wet.

This brings me to colour. The whole piece could have done with a bit more colour. With the green grass, green bridge and the green troll in his green-ish river, the only thing that stands out is the red tank. However, it is a hard decision with your piece; Trolls are generally green, grass is obviously green, a dirty, polluted/chemical river is often green, and I've already said that the green on the bridge is nice by itself. With the metal of the bridge and the red-brown road surface both being fairly muted, the whole piece looks very green.
Also, from a distance, the grass almost blends into the sand as they are both light colours. Giving the grass areas a wash of dark green (before dry-brushing up as I mentioned earlier) would have given some contrast between the grass areas and the sand between them.
The troll probably should stay green, I'll come to him in a bit.
That means that the things left to look at are the bridge and the river...
Changing the colour of the bridge is tricky, as the green contrasts with the red-ish rust. But with all the green around of the grass, you probably don't need it on the bridge as well. You can't really have red, as it would not work with the rust and the road and the tank. Yellow colours would then blend it in to the sand of the base, so that doesn't work. Neutral colours (grey, etc) would work, but would not make the bridge stand out, and you want it to stand out. So that leaves you with blue colours, and I think a nice deep blue would have made the bridge stand out and scream "look at me", and would then give you the primary colour triad (red, green, blue) on the piece.
And then the river, mostly fine (if the bridge was blue). Could have been bluer to bring in the blue that way, but may have overshadowed the bridge then. The river could have gone more toxic yellow though (you may have had to change the sand's colour then) to get it more like a sulphur lake thing. In fact, look up sulphur lakes for if you use this technique again for "water", so many colour options, but they would over-power the bridge in this case.
So it is a tricky piece to colour, but is only really missing one more colour (possibly blue).

The troll is nice. I like him. Good modifications and the weathering on him works really well. Good effort on the glow inside his boiler and the hammer is good. Well done.

The tank is another good build. Good use of parts for the boiler and chimney. The tracks could have done with some detail to show the links/hinges. The painting is generally neat, but the brass could be improved and the red needs some highlighting. It's an interesting shape, but the gun turrets don't really fit with it. The tank is all square and boxy, and the turrets are round. In a way, it would work really well as a civilian vehicle, without the turrets, or maybe with some differently shaped turrets (to fit the square aesthetic). Good effort on the weathering/dirt. A wash of light brown, left to settle into the corners. would have improved the look of dirt getting into hard to clean corners (and avoid the clean border around the white panels).

Good work. A nice, very playable, well built, piece of terrain. Good to see you trying more out of your comfort zone. A few more added painting "tricks" and you'll be heading up to the next level.
