I hope you are pleased with your work. It is a truly impressive piece of work and well worth all of the accolades. Really keen to see what you do with the base.

Cheers Archer. I am really pleased!! It's taking a while to complete but wirth it. Not rushing anything. Base will be fairly built up I think but done in dark greys but some deep metals. Nothing too bright or garish so it'll contrasst nicely with the knight. Leasting, thats the plan!!

Knight isn't finished yet Bottle. Far from it, but really happy with how it's looking. Looking forward to doing the freehand heraldry I've drawn out (somewhere a few pages back in this thread) Just taking a wee break from it to do the Kats. The carrier Kat is coming along nicely. Colour panels are based and washed now. Threw the Dominus onto the platform to make sure the big lunk fits!!!

Post by: Januine

Thx folks. Really really wasn't liking the stock AdMech schemes - all too bright and meh......didnt fit in with my idea of what the cogboys & co were like so made my own that fitted how I'd imagined them. The metals are several differnet layers of drybrushed metallics over a black basecoat; warplock bronze followed by ghenna's gold and then runefang steel followed by a nuln wash. Give a deeper more varied and aged look to the metals as different tones shine through rather than the usual flat look from leadbelcher + wash.......I think ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Stepped back from the Kats for a mo to get the Alpha some paint. He'll be riding on the back of the lead Kat. As he's an alpha, I inverted the usual colour scheme to blue on the outside with a dark grey lining. Blue is still a touch bright but it'll tone down after shading a glaze.

Hahaha - tidy! Nice one LeC!
Do live this skit figs. Only little problem has been putting a magnet in his feet so he'll attach to both his base and to the back of the Kat. Skit feet are kinda ......dainty and just too thin and small to fit even a 3mm magnet into. Drilled two holes into the soles of his feet though and put metal rod (aka a paperclip!!!) in. It's not the strongest maglock at all but it'll do.

Extra two days off this week due to the entrance tests. I love exams was hoping to get a mountain of painting done but spent most of yesterday building a squad of skits. Gorgeous figs but fiddly little fethers take an age to put together and smooth out
Have managed to get all the blues done on the ranger alpha and the remaining to Kats. Jumped ahead a little and did the alpha's trim, squad designation and forgeworld marking on his cloak though. Onto the greys of the Kats next

You did the white trim so well, mate. I'm embarrassed to say mine came out horribly! You must have a very steady hand. Loving the blue.

I'm going to try following your recipe for metal next time too.

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2015/11/12 07:58:58

Post by: Januine

I cheated a little with the trim. Chopped up a few of the cog line transfers and put them on in pieces so as to try and follow the uneven hem of the robe. then filled in the blanks with some white scar. The forgeworld symbol is half a cog transfer, half an alpha designation number and then the rest of the symbol painted in in white scar. All comes together fairly well
Aye - give the metals a go. It takes abit of time but I prefer the worn and old metal effect that comes with it. Has a bit more depth than just leadbelcher/nuln oil.

Now that is the sort of ride I need in peak hour.

Looks fantastic. The conversion is a really great example of the massive size of the Kat. The grey coat stands out really well overall even though it isn't a contrasting colour to the rest of the piece.

Post by: Januine

Cheer Archer. Still need to add a bit of filth and the like to the Kat's tracks and that but he's pretty much done. The Alpha on the platform came out well. The Kat has the same blue as the Alpha's robe on the underside of the chasis. The reast of the ranger squad will (eventually) have grey robes with blue on the inside instead of the Alpha's grey inside/ blue outside scheme. Just need to finish up the other 2 Kats now and they'll be all ready to roll on out

So, the Kats are finally all finished and based. Hopefully get them photo'd later today. Time to get back to the Freeblade knight. Onto the last group of pieces to be painted. Once these are done, it'll be onto freehand designs, and then weathering and damage.

If you have a hairdryer handy, give it a quick blast with that on low power, it should speed things up a little. Just be careful not to blow the paint into pools or areas it shouldn't be.

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2015/11/28 12:12:21

Aye that's why I stayed away from the missus' hairdryer. Feared it may start pushing the glaze around and leave unwanted stain lines. This step is a pretty thin glaze so it dries fast enough

Funny you should mention that. Just made a start on the Knight's tilting plate.

Thx very much Para. Was a touch nervous starting the freehand. but seem so to have gone well so far. still need to add in the trident. Not sure to have it in front of or behind the helmet. The it's onto the banner,......tomoro.....maybe - lol

I say put the trident behind the helm. That's traditional on this style of heraldry from what I've seen and you don't want to break up that nice bronze blend.

Random question, but do you have any background in art at all? You seem to have a very good understanding of how colours work and interact, and a real knack for designing stuff like this.

Crkey - thx so much you guys. Means a lot. Freehand designs are loadsa fun. One of the best parts of hobby is doing all the designs and doodles for the figs I'm painting. My wall is covered in pages of the stuff!!!
@Para - no formal training in art per se but I've been drawing and painting pretty much all my life. Had a few watercolour exhibitions back in the day. I never went to art college but my father is an artist so I had a good teacher

Oh - while I think of it - just going through my ipad sorting wip photos. That last batch of marble plates I did for the knight - I phot'd pretty much every step along the way. Is anyone interested in a wee 'how to...' article/tut/whatever? If y'are, I'll try and put something together

I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing how you did that marble. I don't know if I'll ever have a use for marble for my projects, but some of the techniques could probably apply to other things. And btw your freehand work on that tilting plate is great! Wish I could do freehand that well. My own freehand is garbage, probably because I don't do enough of it.

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2015/12/03 03:49:35

Post by: Januine

Cheers Zerg. I find freehand is more about being prepared and knowing exactly what youre going for. Sketch that design out beforehand larger on a piece of paper then shade it with pencil so you know where your darks and lights should be going. Then draw it with a light mechanical pencil onto your fig. Then get painting with your best brush. For the tilting plate I used a W&N S7 #0 & #1 brushes. Oh and thin those paints even more than usual!!

As for the marble 'stepbystep' - I'm working on it!!!!! I've never done one of these before so I really hop it makes sense!!!

It's weird, I'm a painter and illustrator by trade, but I've never had the confidence to apply freehand to a miniature. I'm bloody envious of your confidence to do so (and do it well!).

Seconding that I'd like to see the steps.

Would one on freehand be useful too? I haven't started the banner for the knight yet so I could do one for that if folk would find it useful...

And I really have no idea what colour(s) to do the banner trim that will fit in with the overall scheme...... :/

Does it need a trim colour? He is a free blade after all and perhaps he has removed the trim colour as a sign he is no longer affiliated somehow?

Otherwise I would wait for the full assembly and see what sort of spot colour would look the best.

Cheers Archer. Aye - needs the weathering. The showroom straight off the production line has never really done it for me. Prefer to give it a little bit of history and battled apprearance. Much of the chippingis already done with masking fluid. Working on staining the metals at the mo, then a touch of verdegris and wear then onto the paintwork - sponge et al. Get there eventually The boy is really begining to come together though

Most of the plates stilll need to be glued on. All the weapons are magnetised so that's no problem. Once I finish the verdigris, the brass just needs a touch of wear/highlighting. Few more minor decals. The script on the chest and reaper chainsword. Then chipping and weathering on the non-metal parts. Final stains and filth, lenses, and then finishing touches. Seems a lot but it's not really....well, apart from the chipping. That'll take a wee bit of time. lol.

Thnks for all the comments folks. Really happy with the base now. I do like a bit of basing!!! The pipe was al red at first but it was way too distracting to the eye and was going to take away from the knight that'll (eventually) be above it so I 'stripped' the paint back to the metal on top. Think that works better now.

 Master Azalle wrote:

Cheers very much Azalle. The marbling was done quite differently to the methid Duncan shows in the video AoV posted above. The method I used is a bit more involved. I used all GW paints and it's done in stages. I wrote/posted a tutorial/step by step on how I did that marbling over on my other plog here - http://warpbound.blogspot.kr/ if you want to have a look. I tried to be as comprehensive as possible but I've never written a tutorial before so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

The brass/gold trim is pretty straightforward. Just layers and washes really. Basecoat of warplock bronze with 2 thinned layers of brass scorpion over that (love that metallic) then wash with ol'faithful Agrax Earthshade. First wash over everything and then go back and add a little more around the rivets and recessed areas. I start the weathering before highlights as the highlights are more showing wear and rubbing on the edges. For the staining on the brass I use coelia greenshade - goes on brass perfectly as the darker base for the verdigris which goes on sparingly next with nik oxide. Finally drybrush the outer edges (places where the metal would take more wear an tear from hitting off things and being rubbed against) with runelord brass and a tiny touch of runefang on the edge of brush to the edges. All GW paints. That's basically it. All about building up layers and stains etc. Hope that helps

Finished the lenses and optics last night and the metals are now all finally done. The only thing left to do now is final weathering and chipping adm we shall be done!!! Mum arrives over here in Korea tomorrow for Christmas and the New Year so I'll finally be getting my hands on all the Mechanicum stuff I ordered from FW 3 months ago!! Happy little Irishman I shall be!!!!

That is one of the coolest Cairn Wraith conversions I've seen to date, Jan! Setting that bar higher still.

You're metal work is really interesting, I had already made the switch to Ironbreaker, but I think I will move up to Runefang too. It seems much more flexible than Leadbelcher.

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/06 21:51:47

Post by: Januine

@Zambro - all is good. Just a wee checkup. Cheers - that gold effect started as a mistake when I was painting my DA Haemonculus. Was really tired and wasn't thinking what I was doing. Laid down Runefang instead of Runelord and then shaded it. Came out pretty nicely. I'll add a little staining with Athonian later to age and corrode it a touch.
@Kernel - thx very much fella. Glad you like him. Wanted him to have that creepy Blanche AdMech preiest feel - tall, skinny, looking out from deep inside a heavy hood kinda thing
@Bottle - many thx B. Credit goes to krautscientist (if you havent seen his admech and csm kitbashes/conversions, go check his Dakka plog out - amazing stuff) for switching me onto using a cairn wraith for AdMech. Ironbreaker is still really handy but really only use it for wee things now. Most metalwork I like to use several layers of differnent metal to get a more varied effect with hints of different colour showing through. Gives them a more full and aged feel. Runefang is handy but very bright on its own

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/06 21:54:13

Post by: Ustrello

Jan that recipe for the gold, is it really just runefang reikland, sepia? I kinda want to use it on one of my upcoming guys if you dont mind.

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/06 22:13:43

Post by: Januine

Go for it! Aye - base with runefang (2 thinned layers with lahriman) then a light wash of reikland (more focused toward the recesses but do cover all) and then build up layers of seraphim lightly until you get the tone you want. Highlight with Sycorax Bronze but go easy on it here. Oh - if you want to really deepen the recesses, thin line wash with agrax in the cracks, just the recesses and dont use it neat

Grab some guitar wire as well when you get a chance. It's cheap, available in different gauges and the core is surprisingly firm. Worth having in your toolbox for a couple of dollars. Or Won. (yes, I had to look that up). The Magos is looking amazing - I can't believe you've done all that so quickly.

More importantly, I hope all is well with the hospital trip and your (and your family's) health.

Post by: Januine

Thx Az. Aye - all is good. Hos trip was routine. Nothing scary - lol! Gonna be doing a few more character tech builds soon for bth AdMech and an Inq retinue so def gonna pick up some guitar strings and give it a bash. Isn't it a bit bendy and springy though?

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/07 01:33:40

Post by: Azazelx

That's the thing that surprised me the most. In the lengths that we tend to use, it's pretty good - and is bendable with pliers to the shape you require. It's probably a tiny bit springy if you try, but then if you put that kind of pressure on a model or part of a model then if it were resin or HIPS you'd be breaking it, so not exactly a drawback..

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/07 01:57:58

I'll be honest, unless you're working in 6mm then you should stick with the greenstuff tube maker that you seemed to use. The guitar wire's ridges are much too small IMO

Wow

Love it as usual, and the build has inspired me to do something similar when I get around to doing my 30k Mechanicum. One question though, what is the torso armour piece from? Looks like the Kataphron armour to me, but I'd rather have confirmation from the source

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/08 01:48:01

Post by: Januine

The two torso armour plates are from the Kataphron Breachers. I built my Kats as Destroyers so had all the Breacher bits left over. Had to shave doen the sides quite a bit to get them to fit inside the robes

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/08 03:29:21

Post by: Rygnan

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm looking at grabbing a box of Kataphrons to use as the basis for 3 Legion Rapiers anyway, so I think I'll steal that idea for my Archmagos when I get around to it. Now just to find a use for the actual bodies

Of Knights & Mechs @ 2016/01/08 04:13:59

All the new AdMech stuff is an absolute goldmine for bitz. The Kats, the Skits & the Rusts esp as they are dual kits so you end up with a shedload of left overs. The Kat bodies would make for some nice big chunky gunservitors

To be fair, the plastic Magos Dominus is a pretty nice model as well (pretty big too- comes on I think a 50mm base), but Jan's captures more of the Blanche style.

The plastic Dominus Tech Priest is a gorgeous model. My favourite GW character model of last year hand down and easily (He comes on a 40mm base). The only thing I didnt like about it was the 'popehat' head option - which is fine bcs I didnt have to use and after a bit of choppy chop, was able to use it for the Magos instead

I like the single metal panel in the carapace. Serves to break it up a little and adds that mish-mash aspect that suits the Mechanicus.
