Excellent work on the Magos. Is there a story (in universe) behind the skull with the red cross?

Not just yet. The first two prologue bits are done (one for the Knight and one for the Dom & Cas) but only first drafts. Need to find some time to print them out and go back over with pen and coffee - lol. I'll put them up somewhere at some point. All the stuff I've been doing over the last year ties in together in a bigger narrative

To be fair, the plastic Magos Dominus is a pretty nice model as well (pretty big too- comes on I think a 50mm base), but Jan's captures more of the Blanche style.
I'm actually a big fan of both the AdMech and Mechanicus lines. Well, I'm a bit torn on the FW "tanks" but I pretty much love everything else. That's how impressed I was with Jan's Magos. Post by: Januine
Thanks a lot folks. Host is coming along nicely. Colour scheme is pretty solid and grim. Glad I went with something darker and more war torn than bright and chirpy! Need some footsloggers mixed in so I reckon a squad of rangers will be next to join the Taghmata! Like mixing the FW stuff in with the GW figs; makes a nice mixed force, bit more varied as the aesthetics are defintely a little different but do go well together. So, it'll be rangers next then a thanatar with a controlling techpriest and then some ruststalkers and then your friendly, ever present, pleased to make you dissappear, Inquisitional warband

The thanatar are definatley some of the coolest mechs available to the mechanicum. I'd love to get one to chop up and convert, lots of potential in them.

They're pretty sweet models and lots of pieces! Mine is still sitting in its bag in my cabinet :( Hopefully get to him next month. Not gonna do too much converting - just a little change with the legs and I want to open up the cowling on the plasma mortar into a firing position. Want to have the guy bracing himself as if he's just about ot let loose with his main weapon.
Would like a few more of the FW castellax as well - really like those models

Post by: Januine
Sounds good. I've managed to get a wee workaround on the too cold to prime weather thing. Leave my rattlecan on the floor (all houses hav underfloor heating over here) for an hour or two, then spray out on the balcony and quickly bring the still wet figs back into my mancave painting room to dry. Results have actually been better than when I prime in normal weather - go figure. llol

Post by: Camkierhi
Scyllax looking pretty brilliant as usual.
For years I have been rattle canning in me shed and bringing the still wet gear into the house to dry, always works out well. Now though I just do it in doors with the windows open for 5 minutes, back room where it don't matter and avoid nastier paints, GW and Army painter primers usually not too bad. But then I am nuts so probably best to ignore me.
91816
Post by: Januine
lol! The wife would have my guts for garters if I 'canned inside the house. Our balcony is a interior balcony off the living room but still considered 'outside'. She still gives me the cat's eye when I go out mask, can and figs in hand!!!!!

Good God your work is amazing Januine. This stuff alone gets me wanting to get back into 40k, and you certainly do the Mechanicus models justice! I'm really hoping to see more of the Forgeworld models like the Scyllax. Pick up the Macroteck Magos so I can see his little servitor buddies nicely painted up.
Oh: as a side note, completely separate from *anything* to do with this thread, my brother is visiting South Korea right now for travel and possibly work. Any advice on things to see while he's there over the upcoming months?
91816
Post by: Januine
Crikey - thx very much for the compliements there Accolade - very kind of you to say I do have some more of the FW stuff in the line to be painted in the next couple of months
Depends where about your brother is in Korea - if he's in Seoul - there's a few palaces and folk 'villages'et al he could see. Insadong is a nice area to go an check out for souvenirs. Korea's not the most touristy of places with lots of stuff to see unlike if youre traveling around europe. But there's still good stuff to check out. The national parks like Seorak San (where I used to live) and even Chiak San (where I now live) and many others are really beautiful adn worth a trip to for some hiking and traditional korean seafood pancakes washed down with some makkoli (fermented rice 'beer'- so much nicer than it sounds!) along the way!! Tell him to stay away from the soju though - cheap as hell but it's like drinking rubbing alcohol and delivers a viscous hangover. Stick to the makkoli!!!!

Also, thanks for the all the information on Seoul! That's where my brother is, so it should all be quite useful to him. This time-actually related to the topic- do you know of any hobby shops in the city that cater to 40k? I was told he's found a lot of gundam stores, but nothing in the wargaming vein of things.

The main foreigner drinking/shopping/eating area is Itaewon btw. Hongdae is better though.
Shops for 40K......there is one.....ONE!!!! In the whole country (that I know of!) Prices are pretty much the same as back home....maybe a buck or three higher but not insano expensive thankfully. The shop's name is 'Orktown'. They carry all the majot GW stuff and paints. Have free gaming tables and the staff speak decent english. Here's the Facebook page where you can also find directions to the shop - https://www.facebook.com/orctown/?fref=ts

소맥 is the devil's work!! Need to head up to Orktown again soon. Ran out of Chaos Black spray halfway through priming a squad of kits ><
The Dio bases is pretty much done now. May had a few deep tones and grime to the nooks and crannies once I have all the figs in place. Final touches kinda stuff. The Scyllax themselves are not 99% done. Just need to check back over them for any last things and add a light filter to the armour plates on top. Really happy with them.
I dropped the bloody Arch Magos the other day.....That.Was.NOT.fun!!!!!! Thakfully I seem to have done a pretty solid build as there was only minor damage - his shoulder bolters snapped off as did one single chord claw.......got away pretty luckily there. Showed the bbuild was pretty solid though so all is good
The pipes are a lot of fun to do. I was going to tleave the under red colour higher up on the pipes but as it's been stripped off by the winds of 'The Blind' (see fluff for detail ) it didnt really make sense to do so. They need a few more scratches and that still but pretty much done now.
Should hopefuly get final stuff done today and the photos too as the wife is off to Seoul for the day.

So the dio base is done. Used a touch of the FW weathering powders just to add some shadows n depth etc in a few places. And then sealed it. With purity seal. ...... Bear in mind this is the first time I've used purity seal since it fether up my DV CSM chosen figs a few months back by frosting the crap out of them. I was a bit in the nervous side to say the least. Howeve... Seems to have worked out ok I threw out the previous can and this time use one of the new cans - the new designed ones that came out around the time of AoS. Left the can to warm for a few hours on the floor (Korean underfloor heating - it's bloody marvellous) and sprayed out on the balcony and immediately brought the base back into my studio to dry. Success!!!! Still rather hesitant to trust the stuff on any figs mind- lol

Marble......hmmmm. Don't think so. That was more for the freeblade rather than a part of the forgeworlds usual livery. The inquisitor and his retinue will definitely have marble bits. I really like the attention you've lavished on your bases. It's enough that they are evocative without stealing the spotlight of the model itself.

Cheers Minus.....it's coming along. Still have a fair few models still awaiting paint before they can join their coggy friends. The Magos above I really am dead chuffed with. My first ever scratchbuild/kitbash and he came out just as I'd imagined in my oddly twisted little head - lol

Aye - floaty thingymajig the Magos boys hook themselves up to and run rampage about the place on. I might make mine on legs though. Haven't thought that far ahead yet. Lol
96252
Post by: LeCacty
You could use four ironstrider legs all spiderlike.
91816

Hmmmmmm. Might be a little gangly. Thinking more along the lines of the legs that necrons have on one of their walkers. Except not all necrony!!! Need to sketch some stuff up st some point

Cobbled this little fella together and managed to stick my finger to my nose and nearly drill through my finger. Fiddly little bugger!! He's a vox speaker / hailer servo skull for the ArchMagos. Like the skull seems to be screaming as the speaker unit blasts out canticles to the omnissiah. Just need to paint him up in time for Para's comp now

Khorne cares not from where the blood flows, only that it does!
Ahh dremel.. You useful little tool, you. Can't count the number of times I've nearly put a hole in my flesh with it. Most recent injury was getting the drill bit out of this little case with a rubber bed to hold the drill bits in. It was stuck in there pretty snugly and my fingers slipped up it, and the drill bit sliced the finger tips on my index finger and thumb. Ouchy.

Back to the boys of the cog. Squad of rangers has been sitting built (well, sub- assembled) and primed on the desk for a bit and their time has finally come. They still look sooooo WiP but they've actually already had about 10 hours done. Metalwork and mechanics and the woodwork is down and shaded. Sweet mercy all that brass filigree took forever. So much detail on these boys. I don't ever really do massed squads in one go more than 3 or 4 figs but thought I'd do it for these boys. Next up is to do their pressure suits them onto their robes after that

Dont worry - was'nt 10 hours straight!! Think the most hours I've ever done in a row was about 8 - that was painful!!!

Hmmm, short of a Primarch I don't seem capable of spending 10 hours on a squad. But your results are well worth the time spent.
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Archer. I reckon they'll probably take about 20-25 in total for the whole squad. Robes are much quicker than filigree as it's just lots of glazes. Then lens, final highlights and weathering. oh - and then basing......hmmmm.

If you're on about the Magos on the Abeyant (floaty platform thing) and the Scyllax Automata then yes, those are Forge World models, though there's a couple scratch builds in there too.
To be honest, they don't look too out of place with Skitarii and Adeptus Mechanicus. Just bear in mind the Mechanicum stuff from Forge World is pretty much entirely 30k.

Cheers foks @ Xeones7 - some stuff is FW, some GW. The big Arch Magos with the axe and surrounded by ( FW) scyllax though is a scratch build I did using bits of about 8 other kits/models. The FW Mechanicum stuff can be used in 40K games if you have the FW Mechanicum Taghmata red book. I havent done myself but there is a guy on YouTube (Winters SEO) who regularly runs Mechanicus and Mechanicum mixed force and it seems to gel well together. He has loads of batrep videos up there

Metals have come out well; it's my usual metals recipe for the admech adn i just love the kinda tarnished antiquey feel that comes with it Stating next month I'll be starting on the Thanatar but he's gonna take a good long time as I'll be entering him in the 'Eavier Metal comp over on FB

Cheers Maz. Sadly really hard to see the blue interior of the robes well in that photo. But it came out beautifully. Sorry bud, looks a fantastic blue grey with brilliant blue accents make it a wonderful scheme. Nothing wrong with the pics. With the tones you have on the metalwork it is just a stunning combo. It is simply one of the best looking armies I have seen for sure.
Mind you maybe it is because in my mind it is coming over reminiscent of the RAF! Properly military as opposed to silly bright "HERE I AM!" uniforms.

Still don't; only more wows! and ahs! come to mind with that last display
Outstanding work, really gives something to look up to!

Januine wrote:Crikey. Wow - thx very much Para. Seriously cheers they took a bit of doing but damn chuffed with the result. For just a standard grunt squad the amount of detail on them is lush (and seriously time consuming!!) loved painting all the canticle strips.
Will you please accept that your AdMech are the best on the web? Please. I know you're not displaying fake modesty, you are a genuinely nice guy and are far more humble than people may appreciate. On behalf of everyone (I'm sure) I just wanna say that you blew these AdMech out of the park. I hope GW keep making new sculpts for you to keep blessing with your skills.

Cheers guys. Much appreciated Lots more to come hopefully. I really do like all the new AdMech stuff so they're really a pleasure to paint. Need to think how I'm going to tackle the ruststalkers next. Thanatar is still very much in the planning phase and going to take a while as he's going to be entered in a big competition; he really needs to be the bomb.

The Rangers look excellent. They will really fit in with the previous ad mech units you have. Such lovely colours, a very nice change of pace from the traditional reds.

Brilliant work, Jan! My favorite is the masked one with no hood (the head from the Ironstrider) - looks like you didn't follow the instruction manual when putting together that one and it looks so characterful as a result! I need to be braver with my next box of Skitarii and find some variant poses like that one. Top notch :-)

Cheers folk. I really like the plasma gunner fella. That face, partially exposed to the elements just looks like he doesn't give a feth!!! Have built and primed the ruststalkers - they are some evil looking dudes. creepy as hell. Was going to take a night off painting but ......nah!!!!!

Those Skitarii look amazing! So many details, they must be tough to paint and do a good job, but you did it, by God!

Many thx Zerg. There is a lot of detail on those fellas; not the toughest things to paint but very very time consuming!!!

Tremendous unit of Rangers there. I cannot imagine the work that went into one of them let alone all ten. Remind me what Skitarii you have painted up now?
Looking forward to your take on the Ruststalkers.

Standing with the Rangers now there's a Sydonian Dragoon, Kataphron Destroyers, Dominus Tech Priest, Arch Magos, Castellax Automaton, Scyllax Gaurdians and a Freeblade Knight. The convocation grows! Ruststalkers, FW techpriest and a Thanatar up for paint next.

Think all those rangers need a little fire support. A big brother to step up and have their back so to speak. Finally the fella is up for paint

Cheers Bottle. Got a lot done last night and this morning. Base metals are now done. Little bit of work done on the base too. Photos when I get home. There will be effects in the mortar. I don't really go for mad bright airbrushy osl but there will be a little something something

Yes, judging from your flags you went to Denmark and back lol!
Looking fantastic. Is your metal work still just Iron Breaker and Agrax still?
91816
Post by: Januine
Nope. for my admech I came up with different metal method. layers of different metallics with washes to age and give a kind of patina to the base metal. takes a while to do but so worth it. doenst show up quite as well as it should in that photo. may try and get a better, less overexposed shot in the mornng.
no idea why Dakka decided to give me a danish flag!

You're back to korea! That was fast, can you teleport or something?

Post by: Januine
Aye!!! Was on a friend's tablet that apparently changes the country you appear to be in or something. Computery stuff. For someone who loves painting admech, i'm actually pretty crap with the ol' cogitators!! He explained it to me and it went right in one ear and out the other. A lot of facebook games are banned out here so he randomises his country????? Meh - whatever - back to painting; that makes much more sense!

Little work on the ruststalkers and made a start on the grey armour plates for the Than. The right arm one is just a test go as I'm trying out some chipping fluid and want to see how it goes before I use it on the other bigger plates.

No, I'm sorry, it's too good, you're going to have to start over!
In all seriousness, can you share the methods you're using there? It looks awesome, I'd love to shamelessly steal take it as very direct inspiration....

Cheers Para. I will put up a what's been done later on for sure. That was only the test plate as its the arm armour I could repaint it easily if I fethed up the paint. Onto the bigger stuff now - Pauldrons!

The shadows on the chipping? They're thinned rhinox with a touch of black added.

Just for two weeks visiting the in-laws :-) I did think about sending a PM so we could meet up and talk hobby over Chimek or something, but we're down in Busan/Ulsan and I think I read you live near Seoul? Anyway it's nice to be back, even if it's just for 2 weeks. Enjoyed the glorious sunshine today.

@Bottle - Nice!! Hope you have a great trip. Aye - I'm a wee distance away from Busan. I live in Wonju, about an hour from Seoul. A fair ol'hike from Busan and Ulsan!! Weather is finally picking up. It's been a bit gak recently
@Thraxas - Cheers fella. No real problems in the build. Overall he should be pretty straighforward barring a few things. I wanted the legs to be with the right foot back and the left striding forward but the normal build is for the opposite so had to do a bit of converting. That wouldnt have been much of a problem if it weren't for all the pistons that attach to the back of the legs. change the pose knoks them all out so some just wont connect. I got around it though by swaping some over from one side to the other and realigning some of the others. No big probs though. The ammo belt feeds were a bit of a nightmare though especially as I wanted the mauler bolter arm to be higher than designed. Got there in the end but wasn't a walk in the park!
@Zambro - thx chap. That was just the test. came out well so now it''s on to doing the same across the other plates

Post by: Januine
That's the armour plates all base coated and ready for shading, highlighting and weathering. Big fella is begining to come together now that I see it in place, really happy with how that first test plate came out.

As always, great choice of colour locations. Just enough of the gold to stand out but not too much and the same with the blue-grey armour panels.
