Agree to an extent, but the fact that Namco-Bandai have been so quick in approving, and the previous quality of the company's releases (especially as far as Guildball is concerned) I think is probably over-riding people's concerns.
By comparison with some other Kickstarters (HQ25, AvP, Conan spring to mind) this seems likes a surefire pre-order.
Sinful Hero wrote: So what have they shown production models of? Or is everyone pledging based solely on cool sketches of PVC minis ala Relic Knights?
There's prototypes of the Dancer, Knight and Herald. I love them and they seem on par with other high-quality board games like Zombicide or Blood Rage.
Otherwise it's just renders and artwork, but judging by Steamforged's previous work and the fact they are in partnership with Ludo Fact means I have no doubt the finished article will be excellent.
That seems fairly optimistic. It's not 2013 anymore- people expect at least masters of all the miniatures available on a Kickstarter. We already have elements of the mistakes of past kickstarters echoing all around this project. As I said artwork but no miniatures(Relic Knights), approval from X before releasing anything(Such as Fox and the AVP Kickstarter), and then they were obviously ill-prepared for the amount of interest(Bones 1, where stretch goals became filled with place holder artwork- I believe several other kickstarters have had this problem as well).
These are rookie mistakes that shouldn't be happening in 2016. Have they just willingly ignored every other project before their's? That's some worrying stuff that makes a body wait for retail and reviews.
I hear what your saying but almost 11,000 backers and almost 1 Million Pound's Sterling disagrees with you.
Ouya had ~63k backers and made ~$8.5 million. That doesn't mean the end product will live up to expectations.

Those are valid points, and hopefully they'll eventually release more renders and prototypes.

I keep wanting to see some Black Knights. I love their Chaos Warrior looking horned helmets.
Crystal Lizards exist since Demon Souls. They are tiny lizards that will ALWAYS drop valuable loot when killed. They will always run away from you and disappear if you aren't fast enough.
Silver Knights ARE Black Knights. They just weren't treated to massive quantities of fire that charred their armor black. (But yeah, IIRC Black Knights had extra spikes around the neck)
Ah! Now I remember the lizards. They were tiny and I would often end up in grave danger trying to chase them down as other enemies would rush after me.
I don't think I ever saw the Silver Knights. I can't remember if I ever got to Anor Londo.

Black Knights actually have slightly different armour and very different weapons, too. Even their shields are slightly larger and a different shape. We definitely need some Black Knights!
Anyone else think that their choices of things to include are a bit... random? Like of all the areas in all three games to make an expansion of, why the Iron Keep? Why the Guardian Dragon, who is barely a speedbump in Dark Souls 2? Why not more obviously iconic things like the Taurus Demon? I can kind of understand Sir Alonne just because of the Iron Keep stuff, but he's a very obscure character/boss. As cool as he is, he's a very strange choice to pair with the Pursuer for the core expansion. And why the Winged Knights from 3 instead of the much less ridiculous Lothric Knights?
I've always wanted Dark Souls miniatures. It pleases me to no end that a Titanite Demon is included, as well as the bonfire. I really hope to see this expanded a lot.
EDIT: Oh, and why the Four Kings? Of all the bosses from 1, why them?

Inclusions are weird, as well as release boxes. Why the heck is the Iron Keep the focus for one of the first expansions?
You have just achieved another record breaking moment...£1,000,000 within 48 Hours!!!
We cannot believe the momentum of this project - its amazing and we thank every single backer for their support and commitment to bringing this game to life. Now, lets get into the goodies!
We are now into the realms of a brand new FREE expansion set - the Armour Expansion Pack.
The first of these unlocks is the Black Iron Set. Within this set you will get a sculpted model of the full Black Iron Set along with a set of Equipment and Treasure Cards specifically designed around this armour for use in your Dark Souls™ games.
There are several iconic sets to unlock and these can be used by any class - just like the real game
Anything Else?
Of course! We have now also unlocked the Four Kings Add-On!
Having just seen images of the model come through from one of our sculptors - we feel you will be blown away when you see it (we are now sending it along to be approved).
If you would like to add this Boss Expansion set to your pledge, simply add £28 to your overall total and you will be able to select it after the Kickstarter campaign ends. We now have several Add-On bosses unlocked with each being available for £28.
I wonder what the next one will be...and when it will arrive? Comment below your guesses!
Barzam wrote: Again, this is Bandai. They can pretty much be guaranteed to mismanage any property. Let's also not forget their habit of immediately giving up and dumping a product line if it doesn't perform to their expectations.
Like what? I'd like to look more into how well or poorly Bandai managed licensed products in the past. Links to forum posts, articles, etc. appreciated. TIA.
As Malevolence mentioned, pretty much every one of their card games. A lot of their own brands they've mishandled and drooped without hesitation as well, like Jagun Warriors, Digimon, D.I.C.E., Ultraman, Saint Seiya, Kamen Rider, Escaflowne, Danball Senki... this list goes on, and these are just some of the properties they've bungled outside of Japan. Gundam they handled decently at first, but once SEED came around, they screwed everything up and dumped the entire brand in the US and abroad. Then you have the stuff they half-assed and dumped immediately in Japan, like Nobunaga The Fool, Eureka Seven, Valvrave, Mars Daybreak, Nadesico, several Macross lines, Gyrozetter, Aquarion, and many, many others.
What makes them even more infuriating when they dump these, they tend to have a lot of merchandise planned that never sees the light of day. For instance, D.I.C.E. had a whole second series ready to be released when they canned that line. It was going to have 1/18 scale transforming dinosaur and Egyptian themed mecha. Gundam had tons of stuff planned that never saw the light of day in the US or Japan
It would be nice if they didn't succumb to their usual tricks here. Hopefully Steamforged has more control over things than Bandai does with this project.
They'll be juggling size/tooling etc to try and keep the costs of the same classes of boxes similar (so they can hit the same retail price point) I should think
they may have cool game mechanics/ideas that tie best to certain bits of the video game
they may just like some stuff more, if i'm making a game i'll put my favorite stuff in first (within reason)
plus theres is a chance that Bandai may have wanted some stuff in because it might tie to other stuff being done for the franchise now or in planning)
No, the assassin is female and they've said in the comments there will be several female characters. Might look like a sausage fest because they've mostly been using male artwork.
Aside from the pyromancer and the deprived, none of the character models (from the renders and artwork we've seen) are obviously male. I'm not sure why people have been assuming that they all are.
All (pyro and deprived excepted) could easily, realistically and appropriately portray either a male or female.
I expect that it'll be the same for all the additional player armour sets to be unlocked.
As it should be.
Who's to say what's under a knights armour after all?

Thanks! Were these licenses through a third party, or "directly" from Bandai? Really hard reading these tea leaves!
Steamforged replied to my question about how much control Bandai has over the project: "We have their full blessing, but any use of their assets must be approved by them first. We have good business links with Bandai Namco as one of our Directors worked in the Video Game Industry with Bandai Namco previously."
An otaku / gamer friend of mine says that Bandai gives free reign to the licensees, not always with good results. Guess I'll look closer at Stronghold's previous project to see the quality of their work.
Some are entirely their own, others are collaborative with other companies. Gyrozetter for instance was a Square-Enix game, the anime was by A1 Pictures with TV Tokyo as the network that aired it, and Bandai made the toys. So, there's a lot of companies involved with some of these properties. Going back to the example of Gyrozetter though, the game seemed fairly popular. The game has, to date 74 playable mecha with new updates adding more, actual car company involvement, and collaborations with well known mecha designers. The show lasted 51 episodes, which is actually quite long for an anime these days. For Bandai's involvement, they made a whopping 12 small budget priced Matchbox sized cars and all of 6 DX sized cars before scrapping the line. There was only one full wave of releases with a few of the small cars being released in sporadic 1's and 2's while the 6th DX car was released by itself just before the line was scrapped. Supposedly there were supposed to be two more DX releases, but I've never seen any evidence that they actually came out. So, you have a relatively successful franchise, but Bandai half assed the toys (I have some, they're not very good) and when kids didn't go crazy over the mediocre first wave of releases, they killed the line. I should also note that they abandoned the line before the show even finished airing. The manga came out first in 2011 and is still going, the game came out in 2012 and is still being updated, the show ran from October of 2012 - September 2013, and Bandai's supposed final releases were slated for June 2013, but those were scrapped as far as I know, so they ended their involvement after only a few months of producing the toys.
Thanks to you, Ced it sounds like we have confirmation that this is mostly in Steamforged's hands and not Bandai's.
I must say, as much as I'm excited for this Kickstarter and eagerly await fulfillment, their stretch goal model is a bit...odd.
Using stretch goals to deliver expansions is fine. Using stretch goals to deliver expansions....model by model...is a little bizarre. So if we get an expansion box short one model, we're just SOL? What happens if the expansion box is only half populated? Or only has one model? Since stretch goals are now spaced £50k apart, I think we stand a good chance at filling out the Armour Set expansion, and perhaps the next box, but not much more. Seems like it would have been smarter to tell us that we've unlocked stuff, then figure out how it's being packaged later.
The card unlocks are really annoying, too. It would have made a lot more sense to have one pledge level at, say, £500k, that unlocks an extra 5 behavior cards for each boss, with another at maybe £800k that unlocks the extra 3 "Heat Up"/"Damaged" card sets. But I suppose this is an easy and cheap way for them to populate their stretch goal roster....
I see the extra cards as a nice little bonus, something to be excited for between model goals. I'd rather have them than just have a massive £100k void between each mini.

Why can't it be both?
I'm pretty sure it is both.
It is...the Kickstarter Way.
Still, it is working here, as they've already cleared $100K today!
Of course it can be both. I said I find them to be a nice little bonus rather than "really annoying", as PrinceOfMadness believes, but yes they do fill the gaps for better or worse, depending on your point of view.
I think it makes the Kickstarter more manageable. If every other pledge level was a new miniature, it would probably drastically increase the time it would take to make the game.
And I guess they've stopped with the mega-boss add-ons and the retailer exclusive bosses?
I think i'm just a touch concerned that almost all the weight of the content, and the little we know of the mechanics, is so focused on the bosses.
Yes, DS games have iconic, and incredibly designed bosses. But the heart of the experience is always about exploration, and discovering narrative through the act of that exploration. I know from my meetings with Miyazaki-san that this has always been his intention above all else.
So, without knowing more about how a full game plays, it is hard to tell... but at the moment it sounds like a boss-rush game. I know everyone wants more of their favorites, as do I, but all these $40 boss add-ons make me wonder if the game proper wouldn't better be served with more "Lost Izilith" expansions, or such.
And I don't know if its been said, but my contacts haven't been able to tell me if there is game-to-game progression which i'd like to know about as it means things like treasure, armor-sets, etc... have increased value.
Welp, one more set has been unlocked. Never been a fan of the armor in DS1:
Hello Unkindled,
You have located the Domhnall of Zena, and have unlockled the Adventurer Set.
The next stretch goal will increase the difficulty of the Gargoyle. Who has been felled by this monster before?
In our previous update we mentioned that we were assembling a Support Team. We have now assembled that team and starting from Monday we will have a regular presence on here across the US and UK time zones.
Nostromodamus wrote: All the board gamers in the comments are calling the armor set mnis a waste of time because armor should just be on a card.
I'm losing my mind thinking "WHY WOULD YOU NOT WANT A CATARINA MINI????"
It's probably because we're only getting in-game images and artwork for these reveals. Show us Domhnall or Tarkus wielding their weapons in actions poses, and it will probably go over better.
And I don't know if its been said, but my contacts haven't been able to tell me if there is game-to-game progression which i'd like to know about as it means things like treasure, armor-sets, etc... have increased value.
That's a very important question to have answered for me too - if the answer is 'yes', then I'll be in, bigtime.
If the answer is 'no', then I'll probably not pledge at all...

I dread saying it, but I have fairly decent sources, and when they give me "no answer" instead of an "I don't know, i'll see if I can find out", I almost assume its because it is the answer I don't want to hear.
And honestly, Dark Souls is incredible, but I have no need for one-shot random dungeon crawl games anymore. :-p It needs persistence for me, or I just don't tend to care.
We've been asking Steamforged about game to game progression, exploration, etc but they won't answer yet. Apparently it will be explained in time (whether there is any and how it works).
Nostromodamus wrote: We've been asking Steamforged about game to game progression, exploration, etc but they won't answer yet. Apparently it will be explained in time (whether there is any and how it works).
Well, I am actually grateful for the fact that this decision will be so easy for me, personally. I enjoy Guild-Ball, and trust Steamforged to make a great game here. I just know my personal likes well enough to know if there is meaningful progression, I am all-in, and if its a one-off game, I am all out. :-p It keeps it much easier that worrying about the day-to-date of this Kickstarter, arguing about retailer exclusives, etc. :-p
They haven't been saying a lot really. Very non-active. Though that's supposed to change on monday when their newly assembled super community relations league jumps into action.
Alpharius wrote: Weird that they won't just answer it - lends itself to a 'there isn't meaningful progression', but then that wouldn't make sense either!
Agreed. Ideas like, "Do I go back to the bonfire to spend souls leveling up, but knowingly respawn rooms," choice, seems less interesting if those level-ups are for a one-and-done game. I have to believe there is progression/campaign elements.
Likewise, while cater so much to FLGS and offer point-of-purchase, exclusive models, expansions, etc... if you don't intend for the game to be played often in the way you would want a community for any table-top game?
Hell, having YOUR leveled and geared character pop into a friend's game on a night, and both of you taking away progress is a VERY Dark-Souls experience.
Part of me thinks there HAS to be progression... but I don't want to be crushed if it isn't there. If it is though, and is substantial? HOOOOO Boy.... this could be amazing.

There has to be a leveling up mechanic - that's one of the whole 'points' of the DS game right?

Agreed. The very ethos of Dark Souls, be it the PVP or PVE side also is one which doesn't even care for imbalances. Summoning someone "over-leveled" into a low-level players game is just fine for a world where time doesn't work quite right, and worlds sort of intermingle periodically.
Still, I would feel massively more excited if they could confirm that and speak to the extent of it if it does exist.
Even a simple "it's coming, don't worry" type comment would help.
Just seems strange for such a variety of content to have it all end up being a one off, but there also doesn't seem to be anything mechanical that we can see to link events together either.
And yet they keep talking about the importance of exploration, go out of their way to bling it out with physical barrels and chests, etc...
Now that the rush of plastic-crack is dying down, I hope more level-headed discussion starts pushing for mechanical questions. I mean, Salute demo'd the boss battle... half the stretch-goals are boss battles, the retailer expansions are.... We get it, the boss battles/AI are dope. :-) What else is there to do? :-p
I've never Kickstartered before, but I've heard some people say they'll pledge a kickstarter, then sell what they get from it to fund their wargaming/boardgaming/minis hobby. Some people reckon they can basically fund their hobby 100% this way.
This is clearly a very popular project with lots of stretch goals, meaning in theory lots of things to sell once it's all delivered. Obviously it also depends on demand once it's released, but given the amount of funding, and general chat about it, it seems the demand would be there.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Any tips, warnings, success stories?
I would hope there's some form of leveling up considering the enemy cards give you souls for killing them.
If you die, then you drop everything you have collected and reappear at the nearest bonfire. So do you return to the bonfire to rest and spend Souls to strengthen up, but in doing so fully reset the locations? Or do you press on and pray that the next encounter isn’t beyond your capabilities?

This one is not the one to try that with. There are no KS exclusives, thats where the real money is. My advice would be to wait for CMON's Massive Darkness due out later this year and sure to have boatloads of exclusives that you can make some serious dough on later. Of course depending on how much competition you have selling the stuff later, on ebay, etc.

You can try this and make out like a bandit,
for example if you bought into the kingdom death kickstarter initially (and didn't need the cash in the 2-3 years it took to deliver) you could have made a bunch of cash, a $100 pledge could have been sold off for $7-800 if you'd been amongst those who got the first deliveries and sold when demand was high. A highly anticipated game with huge demand.
but on the other hand you can crash and burn spectacularly
for example sedition wars where a $100 game ended up on sale at $20-40. Sadly the actual game was seen as not fun by many and it crashed and burned at retail
most fall somewhere in between. Getting your stuff delivered at the front of the queue (usually not under your control) is often the key as there is usually transient demand when the ks is delivering before stores get hold of it (and before reviews say the game is rubbish in some cases) where you can get the best prices. You also have to think of where and how you'd sell as there's always a risk your buyer (ebay/bartertown/dakka etc) turns out to be a scammer or deadbeat.
so personally I don't recommend it unless you kind of wouldn't mind having an extra copy of whatever it is at the KS price (eg to use the minis for something else, to give as a gift etc) then you can aways change your mind and sell the second copy if prices go sky high. That way you're not relying on selling it, you just giving yourself an option

Does anyone have any experience of this?
Um, yeah, that'd be me, more or less. I have backed a fair number of Kickstarters, had the vast bulk deliver, and sold the bulk of that. Mostly, it's me selling stuff that I thought I'd like, but then became disenchanted with, and getting my money back. I effectively sold 2 units to pay for each 1 I kept. I probably could have done better had I looked at this as a business, but I don't think there's much money in it.
As a business, I think speculation is a high risk business model, and would not advise anybody going into this for real money: - you invest cash upfront - you gamble that someone delivers a good product in a timely fashion, and - you hope that there will be a market when you receive and want to sell. There are a lot of things that can go wrong after your money is sent, from outright thievery (Defiance), incompentence (Ogre, Robotech), and simple delay (RK, KD:M).
If you are OK sinking $1,000s in and potentially making +50% return a year (or more!) from now, go for it.
For this particular KS, I am not backing: 1. VERY EXPENSIVE and non-USD 2. uninspiring product (I own KD:M) 3. poor project management Of these, SFG's inability to tell their ass from their elbow is the real dealbreaker.
Reminds me of the advice for investing in commodities -- only buy wine, because you can at least drink your investment!
* If you're already selling on eBay,. sure, why not.
* Shipping costs have risen, and will make selling less attractive than buying from the OLGS.
* The base game typically drops in value, especially since it will eventually go on sale at the OLGS with free shipping.
* Add-ons in a KS are typically sold at a poor discount. (probably to offset the creator not knowing how many units they will actually sell during the KS), so don't bother with them.
* So it's the SG's you'll make the most profit on, if any. (No, those free SG's aren't free, because you could be buying the base game on sale at a lower price from the OLGS with free shipping.) As said, exclusives are in higher demand than non-exclusives.
One thought is to buy a copy of the base pledge and sit on it while you try to sell off the exclusives and SG's. If you sell them, great, you just got a "free" base game. If you don't, fine, you bought yourself a game to play below OLGS discount.
Then there's the suckers like me who always wanted to paint Dark Souls miniatures, so just the idea of owning said miniatures made me throw my wallet at the screen.
I'll be honest, I don't even care much about the game, I just really want to paint some Dark Souls stuff. That's why I'm desperate for Solaire
Seems like during the night the KS had a good push and the Black Knight set has been unlocked!
Hello Unkindled,
The Black Knight Set has been unlocked. We hope you enjoy these sets, the next one has been silhouetted, I sure you can have a guess at which it will be.
Before the next Set can be unlocked you need to make the Frost Knight even harder to kill.
You're support is still outstanding! You are growing the campaign at an incredible rate.
Praise the Sun \[T]/
Next up is Onion Bro. <3 All I need now is Solaire, since I know my Sexy FluffyTail Waifu is not gonna happen Still, I'd love if Priscilla made an appearance.

I know for myself, any concerns smaller than, say "these models are going to look like gak and the game will be unplayable" are secondary to the fact that this is Dark Souls. It seems I'm not alone in my blind fanboy-ness
Monday should see the implementation of their round-the-clock customer relations super team, so hopefully answering questions is chief amongst their list of duties.

That sounds like the Robotech Kickstarter... And the Aliens v Predator Kickstarter...
I'm in for now and if I keep my pledge its because i'm a fan of DS and I want the mini's. I wouldn't bother trying to make a profit off this KS. There are no exclusives or any reason why someone would pay you tons of money versus going to a retailer and paying msrp. There are huge flags going off, at least for me, that the game is going to be terrible. The lack of information is the main reason for that concern but it also me shows where they are in the development process. I think they have the boss fights down and no idea about the rest.

It's a major pain, because it's not like Steamforge hasn't run a hugely successful Kickstarter before. And they've spent the past year making Guild Ball into one of probably the most well-balanced and fun games currently on the market, and its popularity isn't slowing down.
I can see two reasons for the problems. One is that they're working with Bamco, and that's a huge anchor that's dragging them down. Two, the team working on the board game doesn't have the same amount of experience/skills that the Guild Ball team has. If that's the case, it's an eerie/annoying/funny echo of FromSoftware, whose B Team was responsible for Dark Souls 2, compared to the main team's effort with the original.
1. Almost 1.5kk and only 2 new bosses. IMO, bosses are essential for the longetivity of a game. Take Myth: journeyman or Sword and Sorcery, for exemple. For the same price we get a $%¨load of bosses.
2. No word about the "dungeon crawl" aspect of the game. Boss fight is very good, im sold. But need to know how is the world, progression, etc.
3. Over 10k backers, expect delays (not a real problem, tho)
Mymearan wrote: He's speculating that that could be the case. I assume Steamforged is a very small team though so I would be surprised if it wasn't the same people.
The continued growth of the campaign and community is just staggering. Let's push for £1,500,000 and unlock the next set today!
Hmmm... Mmmm. The Catarina Set, affectionately known as 'the Onion Knight', has been unlocked. We love 'the Onion Knight' and hope you do too.
The next goal to be unlocked will be:
Thank you all once again for your support in this project. Here is a quick recap of the unlock progression. We hope you're all currently enjoying Dark Souls™ III - which boss is currently killing you?
Agreed. I would also like to see them adding more game boards...maybe with some environmental hazards? Some of my most memorable moments from Dark Souls were in travelling through the areas where the land itself was trying to kill you.
Another stretch goal has been surpassed and we're getting awfully close to the £1,500,000 mark. Keep it up! This time you have unlocked Titanite Demon Behaviour Cards, be sure to watch out for it's Titanite Catch Pole.
Our next goal is £1,500,000 and will unlock Havel's Set
The speed at which the Armour Sets will start to unlock is set to increase after £1,500,000 so keep on sharing the campaign via Reddit/Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr/Imgur etc.
Praise the Sun \[T]/
He sure isn't lying, maybe they are done with the cards because the next goal is another armor set:
Alpharius wrote: Has the super new Super Customer Relations Super Team showed up yet?

Apparently someone from Steamforged was on earlier but didn't really answer anything.
Maybe the super justice community relations mega league is still awaiting approval?
OK, I like your version better!
But they really do need to answer those questions, and soon, I think!
Agreed... otherwise I might have to spend my money on... (God help me, I can't believe I am about to write this) some models to play Age of Sigmar with. :-p
The way this Kickstarter was handled from the beginning is really sad. If it wouldn't have the Dark Souls name on it, I would have never backed this. The core game looks still like a good value, even if the rules turn out to suck.
I know I probably wouldn't have bothered at all if it wasn't actually Dark Souls.
I already have Darklight coming and Kingdom Death at home, so outside of the IP I don't think I'd be considering this one based on how many issues have already cropped up.
Yeah obviously the IP is the big draw, otherwise it would've just been a less thought-out Darklight just weeks after Darklight ended. Still hyped as hell as I would like to think that Steamforged knows how to make good rules, but I really need to see how the game works beyond a short snippet from a boss fight...
While the total is pressing on 1.5 million it hardly feels like.. "show the rules.. or else!"
Would definitely be good to see something, but you have to have a little bit of trust that a team that made Guild Ball (which is a bloody well designed game for all accounts) isn't going to lay a turd on us, and then presumably retreat to the bahamas to swim in champagne-filled pools spending all the money they've taken.
And, the pledge cose really isn't that much money when compared to a lot of other stuff on the market and considering the lisence. I'd view it as worth a punt even without another rules update, although obviously would be nice to see what they have planned.
Seems like it's a no for game-to-game progression.
We don't currently, however each session of gameplay is designed to have a campaign feel with progression towards taking on the final boss fight.
As for rules and videos...
We do not have plans to release beta rules during the KS campaign. A new gameplay video is currently being finalized and will be released as soon as possible.

Oooooh, no. Nope. No.
C'mon, Steamforged, really?

We do not have plans to release beta rules during the KS campaign. A new gameplay video is currently being finalized and will be released as soon as possible.
And that's probably me out.
I mean, what are they thinking? When they had their own kickstarter, they put out the beta rules in the first six days. Sure, the game has changed a lot since then, but at least backers had an idea about how the rules worked.
Will keep an eye on this. Curious how it all plays out.
At the very least this stuff will flood the market upon release, so I should be able to find figures I want then.
Plus I'll probably have Darklight in my hands prior to this game ever praising the sun, and at least in Darklight I'll have character persistence. And orphans to raise. And giant mutant warhorse mounts. And mechanical limb replacements. And irradiated gemstone teeth to bite my enemies with.
So while we wait for the exploration gameplay video to be approved, we thought it’d be fun to take you through how this side of Dark Souls™ - The Board Game works.
Featuring a “fast setup, long reveal” mechanic, the game gets you into the action faster and builds the locations out as you explore. The set-up is minimal, mainly just building a couple of decks of cards and laying the first tile down.
There’s a number of ways to play Dark Souls™ – The Board Game, but the standard way is to choose the main-Boss you want to take on and then select a mini-Boss from those you have available. More details on this in the full rules of course, but let’s just assume you have selected the Dancer and the Titanite Demon for this game.
The decks you pull together are; a number of Boss Behaviour decks, a single Treasure deck and an Encounter deck per Boss. Let’s look at these in a little more detail:
Boss Behaviour deck is the way the boss is controlled by the game…samples of how this works is in the current gameplay video on the main project page. Each Boss has a number unique Boss Behaviour cards; to build a deck simply deal face-down a number of cards as determined by the difficulty level of the game session. For a standard game you will face a mini-Boss and a main-Boss…if you have a mega-Boss Add-on you can extend your game even further to include this as an extra challenge or just make this the main-Boss!
The Treasure deck is pretty straightforward, it includes a number of standard Treasure cards, a number of ‘rare’ cards such as armour sets / weapons etc. and any Boss-specific treasures. Shuffle this deck and you are good to go!
The Encounter deck is as easy to put together. You will need an Encounter deck for each ‘boss’ you are facing…so in our standard game example, there will be a deck for the Titanite Demon (the mini-Boss) and the Dancer (the main-Boss). Each deck is made up of the Boss card and 5x Encounter cards randomly dealt (facedown), each deck is shuffled before being ready to go. Note that there are two types of Encounter card, the easier encounters are used in the mini-Boss Encounter deck while the harder encounters are used for the main-Boss Encounter deck. This means the game scales in difficulty so the further you progress, the harder it gets!
Phew! Lots of words but it should only take you a couple of minutes to pull these various decks together. Final step is to gather the location tiles for the area you want to explore. Place the bonfire tile down on the table and shuffle the rest…you are now ready to play. Movement during exploration is tile-based, when you meet a bad guy you switch to combat-based movement which uses the nodes shown on the tiles.
To explore, choose an unexplored exit from the current tile you are on and flip a location tile from the pile. Place this tile exit-to-exit with the current tile and move your models onto the first node. Now flip the top card from the relevant Encounter deck, so in our example this will be the Encounter deck for the Titanite Demon mini-Boss. Each Encounter card contains the following information: DESCRIPTION, ENEMY, EVENT and REWARD.
The DESCRIPTION fills some flavour into the world and conjures images in your mind of the dark and dangerous locations you are exploring. The ENEMY details what enemies are spawned in this location. The EVENT describes any special circumstances for this location such as an area littered with barrels (which block nodes) or traps. Finally, the REWARD describes what the players receive should they defeat the enemies and survive.
Rewards allow players to draw from the Treasure deck, while defeated enemies will release souls to collect. Players can return to the bonfire at any time during the Exploration phase (i.e. once all enemies are dead) to spend their Souls to level up and purchase equipment. Of course, doing so will reset the encounters you have discovered so far so be careful how often you do this…
Continue to explore tiles, lay them out and build the location as you search for the mini-Boss to test your skills against them. Eventually you will discover the lair of the Titanite Demon, at which point you take a mini-Boss tile and place it down exit-to-exit and the door slams shut! Fight or die…or both!
If you have carefully explored and have levelled up and bought equipment wisely, with skill you should be able to defeat the mini-Boss. At this point the exit from mini-Boss area opens up…
Now gather all the tiles currently laid-out, shuffle them and then flip them over. Place the bonfire tile down exit-to-exit with the mini-Boss tile. Now you are ready to find the main Boss…don’t forget, the encounters are now much more dangerous but the rewards are far greater.
Continue exploring as before…gather resources, find armour and weapons before facing the Dancer in a fight to the death.
There’s a bunch of other nuances that add details to the game that you will find in the main rulebook…for example, things like Gravestones which allow you to reveal a Boss Behaviour card to give you forewarning of what the Boss will do which will allow you to prepare accordingly. And there are the Invaders…
Well, that's interesting, but nothing that I feel like I need to kickstart to get into. So there's an early bird pledge going up soon.
Oh a second video is being finalized? I don't think this could have been prepared before the Kickstarter. So not only did they not get all the approvals from Bandai, but they didn't even think they should prepare important informations about the game itself? Like I said, if not for the Dark Souls name, I wouldn't even bother...
infinite_array wrote: I mean, what are they thinking? When they had their own kickstarter, they put out the beta rules in the first six days. Sure, the game has changed a lot since then, but at least backers had an idea about how the rules worked.
Bamco is involved, and approvals (or restrictions) from them are hampering the KS presentation.
As for game-to-game preservation, I though the different versions of DS took place at different times, not that wouldn't prevent you from expecting game-to-game preservation for bosses within the same time period. The game *does* have leveling up, which is more than some games with gtgp (eg. Myth) offer.
The game resets encounters when you return to the bonfire. Dunno how well this will work with a boardgame.
But at least with Myth's system, there is still progression. Even when things reset, you're progressing through the loot bag, and as you unlock titles you're making new abilities and gear carry over and persist with your character.
Well, this was unexpected, the Asylum Demon? News to me. In either case:
Hello Unkindled,
You've done it! You hit £1,500,000 and have unlocked the Asylum Demon Boss Expansion, let's hope you've got some Black Firebombs on hand.
You've also unlocked Havel's Set:
If you missed the AMA with Mat Hart (one of the game's designers) we are currently compiling the answers, and will be posting an update with them. We are looking forward to doing more AMAs in the future,
Also, we have posted an Exploration Gameplay Walkthrough in Update #21 so be sure to go and check that out as well.
Admittedly, no between game persistence is a huge let-down, but I'm still in for now. My wife and several of my friends love watching Dark Souls, but don't feel brave enough to play it themselves, and they're all super stoked for this game, so I know I have a group to play it.
I don't really mind there not being campaign play, in fact I might prefer it! I already have Darklight coming, and I don't have a group where I regularly play board games with the same people. I do have a gaming group but we mainly play miniature games, with board games as a fun diversion you throw out sometimes and ask if someone wants to play. Keeping a campaign going in that environment isn't easy, and two would be nearly impossible. The only other game I have of this type is Zombicide, which is quite different both in theme and rules. So a boss rush Dark Souls with no persistence between games might be exactly what the doctor ordered!
Reading the exploration example again and, correct me if I'm wrong, but it really doesn't pay to explore further than 2 tiles in each direction from the bonfire. Any further and you're just creating more enemies to respawn and fight on the way to the boss tile again if you ever get killed or return to the bonfire yourself.
For those of you who have missed it see Update #21 for an 'Exploration Gameplay Walkthrough' and we had an impromptu AMA this week. It's currently being collated and will be posted on here as an Update. We are looking at running a few more scheduled AMAs this week. Comment below if you'd like us to do so, and what time zone you're in.
With this Stretch Goal the Crimson Set has been unlocked:
Next up you'll be unlocking the Dark Set:
Thank you for all your support during this campaign. You guys are awesome, and there is a good community in the comments section, so keep it up and remember...
The hubris in saying that people who want long games with persistence will clearly just "play an RPG" shows a surprising short-sightedness as to what this could have been.
With a little more ambition and respect for what the game could be, it might've justified treating it like a staple product one would continue supporting/playing at a FLGS.
As it is, giant misfire for me. Kingdom Death, at the same price-point is so much more ambitious of a game, and actually succeeded. Without its IP attached this game would just be a footnote.

Yup!
I mean, cmom!
We gotta a bunch of dungeon crawlers with campaigns and persistence! Myth, Descent, Imperial Assault, Sword and Sorcery, even zombicide has the option!
and you come up with a version os dark souls that doesnt?

I'm completely neutral, I'm in this for the minis of all the things I loved to wear or kill. Hey, speaking of which!
Hello Unkindled,
Another day, another stretch goal unlocked. We hope you've been enjoying the support team's interaction throughout today. We certainly have, and we'll speak to you again tomorrow. For now bask in the Dark Set, worn by the Darkwraiths in the lower New Londo Ruins.
Next up we have the Gold Hemmed Black Set, because you wouldn't want to be caught dead (and you would be, let's face it) in the regular Black Set.
Thank you once again for all your support. Remember to spread the word about Dark Souls™ - The Board Game so we can boost through the Stretch Goals.
Praise the Sun \[T]/
Almost done with all the current stretch goals, only the Set of Favor and the Guardian's are missing after the Gold-Hemmed Black Set so, maybe, just maybe, Solaire is almost here. (Yes, I'm still hoping for it)
I mean, they have to know that a lot of people are interested in one.
Why not use it as a goal then? Why include such a ridiculously large amount of armor sets and player classes for just a one off game?
That's my take at least.
Id like to believe in that, but they ve already said its a one off game.
And lets be honest, how hard would it be?
just put bosses in a given order and manage drops?
I imagine since the mooks don't level(do they?), it would eventually just become a steamroller.
Yeah, I didn't express myself quite right. When I said define an order or levels of difficulty for bosses, I thought on the expansions unlocked - each boss would have a rating, right? Like 1-5 skulls? And each boss expansion would come with his "minions" and those would be tuned for that particular level of difficulty.
They mentioned in the gameplay update that you can adjust the difficulty of your opponents, so campaign play shouldn't be too difficult.
That being said, I don't think anyone's wanting this project to be delayed much longer than it already will be. My impression is that SFG *wants* to have a campaign, but it would have to wait for a future expansion or whatnot.

They are probably among the mooks between the mid boss and the main boss, not before that. That would fit their role as it is in the game, there are a ton of them before O&S.
Most definitely pledging on this one. I saw the black iron set and immediately threw money at the screen... Though I wish I could do the retailer pledge, the model for Manus looks amazing

they´ve shown the model?

Well they confirmed NG+ will be a thing and it will be as close to the video game as they can make it. So while it's not a campaign mode, there will be some sort of way to continue your character.
New Game Plus. In the video game world, it essentially means that once you have completed the game, you can start over but keep your existing character, complete with skills, equipment, etc. Enemies receive a boost to hit points and damage dealt to compensate, and certain items and events in the game are only available when playing through a second (or third, or fourth...) time.
I don't think theres anything stopping us from going Bonfire - miniboss - boss - bonfire - mini boss - boss
over and over again until you have all the armor/treasure in the game and have gone through your entire collection of bosses
in between games you could just put your characters/cards into ziplock bags and start the next time on a new bonfire and hand everyone back their ziplocked characters
Automatically Appended Next Post: you could even just write down your treasure on a piece of paper and put the cards back in the deck so you never run out of treasure/armor to get

6 sets of havel? no problem!
it wouldnt work, its a matter os scalation.
"grunts" need to be a challenge.
If there isint some kind of system, or guideline, you´d just steamroll all the enemies untill you got to the boss.

Depends on how hard the fights are and how good the treasure can progress. You might just be getting more choices for when you fight and not really increasing in power that much. It should make the fights a little easier but dont think it would become a steamroll per se.
Another night, another unlock, that's what I like to see! If this keeps up, next weekend we'll have new stretch goals \o/
Hello Unkindled,
We've nearly completed the Armour Set Expansion. Just two more to unlock and then, well, whatever could be next...
...before you find out though you've got the Guardian Set to unlock. The Guardian Set became available during the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
We have an AMA with Mat Hart tonight at 01:00BST so make sure you're around in the comment section for that. Use it to ask any questions you may have. Keep the momentum up for the campaign and share on Facebook, Twitter, mention us on Reddit (we'll be on there for an AMA in the future as well).

...if only I could be so grossly incandescent.
Oh man, they are quoting Solaire even more now. Please, oh please, let he show up soon
They had a scheduled AMA with Mat Hart last night. Lots of vague answers, but there were a couple of interesting items in there:
- Stretch goals planned up to 4 million pounds, and they'll add more if they hit that mark (which, at the current rate of completion, I kinda doubt, but you never know).
- No more retailer exclusives planned
- Gameplay video will *probably* be out next week, pending approval
- And one really interesting tidbit....Hart was asked about unfinished stretch goal expansions, such as if the Kickstarter were to end without all of the armor sets in the expansion box being unlocked, and replied with "I think the project is supported well enough for SFG to finish any potential unfinished stretch goals!" So that's pretty cool, and eliminates one of the concerns I had.
AMA posted in spoiler for length:
Spoiler:
And the 1800k stretch goal is another new mini-boss!
I'm going through dark souls right now and she just helped me kill the spider demon boss at the bottom of blighttown (after I fought her as an invader)

OI! It's Queelag! Don't bad mouth one of the few good chests in the Dark Souls series
Yeah, that as a mini boss is a bit "meh," but considering there's a maneater / butcher / etc. in all Dark Souls and even in Demon's Souls, I'd say she's famous enough. No idea if there's one in Bloodborne.
You're getting through these Stretch Goals at an immense rate, it's a good thing too, as we have Stretch Goals up to £4,000,000. This time you've unlocked the Guardian Set.
You've almost finished off the Armour Sets now, just one more to go. Then, well I wonder what could be next?
Keep on sharing and increasing your pledges to get the Boss Expansion Add Ons, you'll also help push the total up and unlock more free stuff in the form of Stretch Goals. We've had some great discussion in the comments section today. Make sure you head over and say 'Hi' to the guys there.
I'm particularly curious to see what gets unlocked after Mildred. My gut expects another mini-expansion like the Iron Keep one, but I wouldn't mind seeing a slew of new bosses. Of course, we might just get a set of extra behavior cards for Mildred....
I'm going to speculate on us getting Sif and Artorias included before all is done.
Agreed, we definitely need more things to kill/kill us in the base pledge! I know the fight wasn't hard, but I would love to see some High Lord Wolnir action. Pontiff would be pretty cool, but I imagine he wouldn't translate to the board game very well, especially not that God-awful second phase.
Nostromodamus wrote: Wolnir would be... interesting... to see. Not sure how you'd pull that off in miniature form...
You probably wouldn't. I generally like the weirder bosses, so I'm guessing the ones I want won't end up here. But please, for the love of God, no Bell Gargoyles. Those things haunt me.

ive been saying this for a long time.
a lot of stuff is cool and all that...
but it doesnt add to the game longevity.
If im going to dish over L100, id expected way more bosses and grunts.
As iti stands, im outo of the ks, if a see something lik 5-6 more bosses unlocked (not as addon), im all in, tho.
Well right now you'll get 10 bosses and 12 different types of grunts + Crystal Lizards and Mimics. I don't think that's too bad honestly, especially since we're not even halfway done.

as far as i checked, we had 6 bosses in the pledge.
all others are paid addon.
And, no, IMO, 6 bosses wont do it fo over 100 bucks.
ande, yes, not that bad, since we have 15 more days. But things will slow down, and the "new cards, new sets, new barrels, no bosses" trend is kinda annoying for me
You can alsocount the mini bosses ...and dark souls should be already a tough game against the trash mobs.
I think atm with the current stretchgoals you get a good package. Lots of good looking minis, many reasons to play thegame couple of times + loads of possible expansions you can buy to expand it even more.

edit - just checked - 6 bosses.
Actually I was wrong, it's 9 bosses - 5 standard and 4 mini-bosses (Ornstein & Smough are one encounter). Soon 5 mini-bosses when Mildred unlocks. The add-on bosses are all mega bosses if I'm not mistaken, of which there are none in the normal pledge.

They're in the base game...
It's listed as a "mini-boss", there's only one gargoyle, and there isn't a thousand of my character's corpse scattered on a rooftop around it with a distinct rage colored filter about it. Definitely not the Bell Gargoyles.
Yeah... really on the fence about it. I'm tempted to get the core for at least a nice chunk of fantasy models at a good price, but went in to Myth with the same idea and hated it so much that I sold it off rather than keep for other games.
I'm cancelling my pledge and just picking up Snorlax and Pikachu off ebay when the game gets released. I've had an off-feeling for awhile, but it's gotten to the point where I can't ignore it.
Nostromodamus wrote: Currently 69 minis in there, several of which are large, plus more to come, plus terrain elements and a game. I don't find the price to be bad at all.
Yeah, same here. Imperial assault is around the same price here in Portugal and it has a lot less miniatures. But yeah, completely different styles considering IA is a big campaign with a lot of floor tiles.

Apparently, I need to be more careful with what I wish for, because while the next expansion goal is certainly a slew of new (mini) bosses....they're all invaders. Which I am....lukewarm on.
Pledge rate has slowed down significantly as well - we'll probably finish this box set, but I doubt we'll finish the next (and I honestly expect them to increase the gap between stretch goals once they hit that £2 million mark, too). Here's to hoping that the £2 million stretch goal is something extra awesome, because the stretch goal unlocks are getting awfully repetitive.
Now they just need a player invader called 'kILl3r Tr00ll' who is dressed in a loin cloth with a massive club, has such ridiculous stats that he is essentially indestructible, and does a 'dance' emote upon killing you.

Praise the Sun \[T]/ A fantastic start to the day, we've hit another Stretch Goal and added Xanthous King, Jeramiah to the Invader Expansion. More news on their in-game effect will be revealed during the AMA on Reddit tomorrow at 12-13:00BST.
Our next Stretch Goal is going to be the big £2,000,000. When we hit this amazing milestone we will be adding Kirk, Knight of Thorns to the Invader Expansion. Not only that but we will be introducing a new Add On, no teasers from me on that one. You'll have to twist Mat & Rich's arms during the AMA.
Keep up the great atmosphere in the comment section - 'Brylex the Sleepless' will be around to answer your questions throughout the day. Please remember to share the project and talk about it with friends. More backers = more funding = more stretch goals. JOLLY COOPERATION!
\[T]/
Looks like they're increasing the gap between stretch goals again. I wonder what the next Add-On will be? If they do Artorias/Sif, Gravelord Nito, or Gwyn they've got my money. I'd KILL to get Crossbreed Priscilla in plastic, but sadly I doubt we will see her this Kickstarter.
2 million mark has been reached, and we unlocked SIF AND ARTORIAS! ...Sadly, as an addon, but it's actually a full expansion, so well worth the money, imo.
Hey unkindled,
£2,000,000 has now been reached! What an incredible achievement - this Kickstarter is set to break records if it continues at the pace it has. Kirk in all his thorny goodness has now been unlocked for you all for FREE!
But Wait! There's More!
Since the start of this campaign people have been asking about a certain pair of models that have a big following within the community - Sif and Artorias. We had originally planned to release this set after the Kickstarter project but due to demand we have decided to pull them forward and can now offer the Darkroot Basin Expansion Set as a purchasable Add-On to celebrate the incredible £2,000,000 we have reached together!
[-snipped some stuff about how to manage your pledge-]
That Everything? Nope!
Melinda the Butcher is up next, a crazy lady with a Greataxe +3...not a bad bit of kit to add to your pile!
Lastly, it is Golden Week at the moment in Japan, a National holiday (lucky them!). This has impacted some of our approval times however we expect our next lot of models, etc. to become available at some point next week so look forward to that as we enter our last week of the Kickstarter!
Today is absolutely a day to Praise the Sun! \[T]/
I feel like the price tag for this expansion is worth it and we finally get some enemies, that are at least a bit different. Still humanoid (except Sif), but better than "knight in another armour set".
I still want a "Bestiary Expansion", though. Rats, giant rats, basilisks, various kind of dogs, the giant cats, so much stuff to chosse from...
Yeah, getting Darkroot Basin is really a no-braner. I'll probably add a couple of mega bosses on top of that, most likely Gaping Dragon and the Four Kings. No idea why the Asylum Demon is a mega boss though, he's not even that big...
Blighttown would be amazing. You hit the tile and can't go back to your bonfire and have to make it to the next one alive...
The set would have
-the big fat ugly guys with poison weapons
-the feaky skinny guys with masks
-the little guys that shoot toxic darts
-the fire breathing big ugly bugs
-the giant blood misquitos
-Boss would be Queleg (sp?) the Half woman half giant spider boss
And now that I'm thinking of it they should seriously work in having to ring the 2 bells somehow - its such an iconic part of the game.
Pacific wrote: They could also have that you miss every other turn because of the framerate slowdown
That mechanic would be fantastic. If they add the Dragonslayer Armor (God, I both hope they do and don't, that boss was a nightmare!) I would implement that rule for the tile before him, too. Every time I walked up those stairs, the FPS dropped like mad.
They haven't shown one miniature yet, that hasn't been a digital render. Too many kickstarters have had beautiful renders and then gave backers horrible minis. Sorry but this campaign is totally running on a dream... I'm out.

They've shown 3 pre-production minis. They have not shown production minis because they don't have the money to create them. That's the whole point of crowdfunding; bringing a dream or idea to life.

-They have a video that showcases the Warrior, the Herald, and the Dancer of the Boreal Valley.
-They are making a game based on a third party license; Everything they showcase HAS to go through From Soft, which slows things down considerably.
-The renders they've shown are the same quality as the models for Guild Ball, their other game.
Do you have a link to that video showing the preproduction models? These will be preassembled PVC (just checked).
This looks like it could be the highest non-USD Kickstarter ever! Really impressive, and Guild Ball was handled fantastically well (a bit delayed but well worth it). The resins for Guild Ball are simply incredible, although I don't think that's necessarily an indicator for the production quality of the miniatures here since it will be a different process.
Latest update has a "gameplay demo"... it's 4 minutes of repeating what we already know, and no actual gameplay -_-
They also added 9 new tiles for the expansions... as a £14 paid add-on -_- So to get the full Darkroot expansion, you first need to buy the expansion itself for £35, then the tiles for £14. It's insane. I've been such a huge supporter all along but I'm wavering now. Between the incredible disappointing "gameplay demo" and the paid tiles, this might just be the nail in the coffin for me if they don't show anything more this last week.

It states in the update that the additional tiles are not required for Darkroot Basin/Iron Keep, they are just there if you want them and gives you more options of exploration during gameplay sessions.

Good to know (I guess) the video is not worth watching...
Coudn't they just include the tiles in the expansion? Cardboard is not really that expensive and 15 GBP for 9 tiles is really pushing it.

None of the content is required, you could just as easily remove one of the enemy types, sell it separately and use the same excuse. When you buy an expansion, you want the COMPLETE experience.
I was unclear about whether the different tiles were purely different art (i.e. every non-boss & non-bonfire tile is essentially identical), or whether they were actually different layouts.
I do think the game as a whole has rather missed the point of terrain in Dark Souls - it serves to restrict movement and combat, to hurt and even kill the player. It is as much an enemy as any creature you fight. The preview images make it look like each room is the same evenly-spaced grid (a la Kingdom Death), which is rather dull by comparison.
They've always stated tiles are WIP, though I share your concerns and I do hope variety in shape and node placement is considered for the final product.
I asked this earlier and didn't receive an answer- anyone know how many actual renders they've shown? Will they just us the video game models, and import them directly to whatever software they use to made physical product? Hopefully with a prayer that enough detail holds?
The nodes interact differently. They aren't all just free to move onto and through. There will be variance in the environments. They aren't just an open area.
Yeah, the greed is real. They provided these tiles because of backer feedback. Now everyone wants them for free. The only alternative they had to asking for another 15 pounds for them is cutting the double sided part of it and putting them in each expansion, doubling production costs for them and likewise purchasing costs of the expansions for us, as well as shipping for separating them.
They're thinking about the customer, but you can't make those tiles for free. 15 pounds isn't too much in my opinion.
Automatically Appended Next Post: They've shown renders of:
4 player characters in base game
Ornstein and smough
Gaping dragon
Black dragon kalameet
Dancer
Gargoyle
All grunts in base game, all minibosses in base game

They had the old expansions price's set. They can't exactly throw in the new tiles while increasing the prices (Because that would feth up the entire Kickstarter with people now not having paid enough to get the Darkroot add-on), and they can't NOT increase the prices because then they're screwing themselves out of the cardboard.
Also, it should be said that you get two expansions worth of tiles (Iron Keep and Darkroot Garden, one free and one payed) for that 15lbs.
Also Also, the"Gameplay Demo" was exactly what people have been asking for; a demo on how exploring would work. We've known exactly what the combat was like since watching the Boss Fight video.

I answered you; check the bossfight video; they legitly have models in there.

You can't use videogame models to make minis, they way they're designed (and the frequent used of textures to provide detail) means they're going to have to be redone from the ground up, but obviously based on the video game art
What? In-game renders aren't suitable for cutting tools? Really? They're not the same as pre-production renders of physical product? Even if you can 3-D print it on a one-off basis? Or cold cast the resulting model with a flexible rubber mold? Really?

Yes, the same models we've seen of the same demo. That's not what I was asking.
By my count there are 31 different miniatures/sets they haven't got renders of yet- they may not have updated this image yet though. Feel free to correct me.
I really would like to see at least one extra mega boss added to the pledge before this is all done.
With three more Invaders to go after the current one, hopefully that will see us push into another expansion. Preferably more like the Iron Keep one, with a bit of variety in terms of what is included.

I don't think anyone asked for a four minute repeat of information we already got in a previous update. Just look at the response the video has gotten on KS, on Facebook etc. There was no new information in that video. What people wanted was people playing the game on video. What CMON does, and what most board game KS do unless they already have provided a rule book. It's not too much to ask surely?
Someone on the BGG forums asked these questions:
-How do mobs work? How are they placed? How do they move and attack and choose priority? - Where are the different tile layouts. Even without a finished version they could show us a concept. - How does leveling, stat growth, spending souls, buying weapons/armor work? - Component information? Card art? Dice?
Just read that you can pledge £1 and still get everything in the PM. That essentially makes all my complaints moot because I will indeed be able to see gameplay before putting money in. Good on you Steamforged, you'll probably get a ton of money out of me in the end...
RoninXiC wrote: You're asking forVERY detailed stuff. This board game is not finished yet. So things may change.
None of "your" questions are crucial imho.
How is this detailed stuff? I think it's very basic stuff. The could give us at least a draft. In the first week of the campaign the excuse was that "We are only a few days in the campaign, give them time, they will post it!". We're now in the last week and we have got 7 (2 of them are terrain) new renders since the launch, no real new information how the game works, and only now are they posting social stretch goals.

Will you? Did they say there will be 'real' gameplay before the PM ends?
They aren't like cmon. Cmon Kickstart games that are almost finished already, this one is still in development. They have said they aren't going to release a beta rulebook. I asked earlier this morning and was told they will send out an email to all the backers when the rules are complete updating them about the rules for the game.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The reason the video seemed to fall so short is because they made it a long time ago and had to wait for golden week to get approval. By that time people had asked for a much different video than they promised and could deliver.
Don't worry, those who are questioning things are wise. Many of us have pledge for established campaigns from gamezone, dust games, and palladium (dust, robotech, heroquest 25th). Others have pledged for other games with detailed renders and were very disappointed in the minis which were blobs (zombie 15, sedition wars, etc). Most folks who have backed many campaigns know to ask questions about gameplay, look for real minis or sculpts and not just digital renders, and that an established company means zilch.... especially when paypal and credit card companies have publicly said they will no longer re-imburse folks for failed kickstarter projects or campaigns that didn't totally deliver.
So to those asking questions, good for you. Don't let others bully you or degrade you for asking questions or using your own critical thinking skills. The game looks good, but there has been little info given. A good example of a good campaign in Massive Darkness by Guillotine Games. They have posted pics of the production plastic minis, digital renders of the same (you can see how close the production is), gameplay info, a production box, sample cards, etc. A person knows exactly what they will get and how it will play, and can make an educated decision rather than a pledge on an idea.
This is a very cool game, but I prefer board games to impersonal video games. This game peaked my interest, but I am looking for more info as well. If they don't post more, I will wait until retail or buy a pledge later (I doubt this will be worth as much on ebay as zombicide, kingdom death, etc, with what I have seen).
CMON games are generally mostly complete before it even hits KS. And I don't see any bullying going on here, this is a rather tame KS thread for Dakka and all Dakka KS veterans will know this. Could this KS be handled better? Probably, but we will never know and it has done fantastic as the current total suggests. I say well done to Steamforged Games (who also make the fantastic and successful game called Guildball, which was also funded through KS) so far for what you have achieved.
Bharring wrote: When will it ship for backers? Is "April 2017" accurate?
A year is a long time, but clearly they need some lead time...
They said they hope to have it shipped out by Christmas, and that they put April as a "worst case" date to cover themselves.
I still think it will be much later than they estimate.
They're so far over their target, and their stretch goals are adding so much to the project, this is looking like another Conan the Barbarian. Conan is looking like it will take 2 years from Kickstarter close to shipping, and they were at least providing 90% of the renders and some resin examples. Might as well plan on getting this sometime in 2018.
overtyrant wrote: CMON games are generally mostly complete before it even hits KS.
Yep. If you're looking for a KS campaign run as well as CMON, Stonemaier Games, Reaper, MegaMiniatures, etc., back *those* companies' KS, not SFG's. Considering that you can easily drop over $1200 per year on games from the best-run KS companies, you're not missing much if you don't back a KS that doesn't meet the requirements these companies do. You'll pay a higher price at retail, but you won't be taking the risk that other backers are taking -- and incomplete information, such as not enough gameplay or miniature information, is risk. Given that SFG has run a KS already, and has designed the well-accepted Guild Ball game, I think anyone backing this project and a fan of the DS franchise will be happy enough with it. Anyone *not* looking for a Dark Souls game (eg. just looking for a dungeoncrawler) might as well go look for another game (eg. CMON's Massive Darkness KS) and wait for the retail reviews.
I'm 100% Hyped since Solaire, so this was a nice bonus!
Hey Unkindled,
We have now reached £3,500,000...
PRAISE THE SUN-ARIO!
The Steamforged Games Design Team have been putting their heads together and have decided to celebrate the record-breaking success of this Kickstarter project (and due to popularity during this Kickstarter) by confirming the Core Game will additionally come with a FREE scenario-driven Campaign Mode where your level of success would continue on from one game to another.
We’re pretty excited about this, but what makes this even more exciting is that we want to work with you guys. We want to utilise our amazing backer community, to make these scenarios as intriguing and challenging as possible.
So let’s hear your ideas about what would be cool to do in the comments and via our dedicated email campaign@steamforged.com
We want to hear your ideas for the flavour/tone/setting of your scenarios. Then let us know what mini, main and mega bosses would feature. What enemies, invaders, summons and challenges would be met along the way along with what treasure, weapons and armour could be found.
So be creative and let us know what you think - this is your opportunity to help shape part of the project you have supported and brought to life! We make the game, but you make it happen.
Alright guys I'm pledged at 158 and here is my thinking:
80 - basic game + monkey load of unlocks
28 - Old Iron King because the Iron Keep needs a super boss (though I'm thinking Smelter Demon that comes with it might be sufficient)
35 - darkroot basin expansion looks like an awesome deal + SIF!
15 - tiles for darkroot basin and iron keep (otherwise you will be using the expansions on the basic game tiles)
I'm torn about the Gaping Dragon - just doesn't seem to make sense to get him if you don't have the sewer expansion leading down to him (same with the other bosses, would only get if I had the expansion for their areas)
Thoughts + what are you guys doing? Only like 3 hours left!

I find it incredibly annoying. I cancelled my early bird pledge on the understanding that there would be no campaign mode in this game (in fact, I'm pretty certain one of the heads of Steamforged actually disparaged dungeon-crawling campaign games in one of his responses to backers).

Not so much "outside their original scope" as believing it couldn't be done with any meaningful results.
They knew people wanted it. Why not let us know they'd consider it earlier on?
I canceled my EB too. A shame, I was really excited about this and have felt bothered by it since it started. Never a good sign when my Kickstarter sense starts tingling.
At the least I'll have something to look forward to picking up in store if it turns out to be a success (gameplay- wise, not fund raising- wise).
I had planned to get the Darkroot Basin expansion at retail regardless. Need Sif and Artorias.
I'm not looking to change your mind but hear me out.
2 of my favorite board games of all time were Heroes Quest and Talisman. I spent many evenings enjoying both games immensely with family/a group of friends.
Neither of them are RPG games but you would be amazed at how fun they are anyway and how involved people get in them.
Dark souls takes a bit from both of those games.
It will have the game to game campaign aspect from Heroes Quest. But without the need of a DM which is interesting - the random factor of the tiles and cards takes care of that for you so everyone gets to be a player.
You will get cards for items like in Talisman, but everything is represented by awesome miniatures instead of pictures on cards like Talisman did.
I'm telling you from experience, when you sit down to play this game it will feel like an rpg and people will get into the characters.
28 - Old Iron King because the Iron Keep needs a super boss (though I'm thinking Smelter Demon that comes with it might be sufficient)

Ok I dropped my pledge to 130 because...I think the Smelter Demon is a sufficient boss for the Iron Keep so I'm at what I think is the perfect pledge. 130 for the basic game + stretch goals +darkroot basin + basin/iron keep tiles.
You might want to add 15 for the basin/iron keep tiles - it dosn't look like the expansions come with tiles so you will be playing those expansions on the base game tiles.
RoninXiC wrote: I don't REALLY see that as a big problem to be honest. Yes, the art is probably quite nice, but in the end you pay 15 pounds for a bit of variety..
YEAH OKAY I ADD THEM.
nice - our pledge is for the same things
I'm desperately trying to stop myself from adding the gaping dragon or iron king at the last minute.
Yeah... same here same here. But I think I can stay strong
28 pounds still is quite a lot of money for "just" a board game miniature. It might be massive and stuff, but still just a single miniature I cannot really use for anything else.

Yes, and ... I'm pretty sure the base game, stretch goals, and darkroot basin are going to take me years to paint already.
Went in for core + darkroot + tiles, myself, with two Mega-Boss add-ons - Four Kings for sure, and probably either Black Dragon Kalameet or Asylum Demon (mostly depends on how rad the sculpt for AD is). It's a bit more than I was originally intending to spend, but I'm getting....126?...models for £186 - which is a silly good deal. Not to mention the actual game itself.
