Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2010/10/07 10:18:45

Post by: dantay_xv

I know people will see the link and think "oh frag, another Space Wolves army, has he no imagination blah blah etc" but I am hoping by putting this here, it can show a little diversity and individualism from the norm. I also appreciate anyone and everyone's input into this, because although Imight have some strong ideas about what i want in certain aspects, sometimes an alternate view can highlight a flaw or make a good idea better.

Anyways....

I have been putting my wolves army together over a number of years, I dont know about anyone else, but i get really enthused when i do the building, but when i see all the painting to be done i get kinda nervous/ put off.

Anyways, I have bitten the bullet so to speak and started getting the painting done. Most of these models are incomplete but almost done. Any tips/ comments would be greatly appreciated.

Or go to page 3 to get a better idea of where I am at and why I am starting again/ afresh.

Thanks in advance.

Danny

I know exactly what you mean when you say that you're enthused for the building but not at all for the painting...

Looking good, though I will say that the power armor is looking a little dark compared to what I think of "space wolves gray". If you don't mind me asking, what color/manufacturer are you using for it?

Lol, still learning how this photobucket malarkey works, here are some more pics.

" border="0" />

Another pic of some wolf guard and hq selections, need backpacks and a bit more work.

" border="0" />

Blood Claws and Wolf Priest, I really want to bulk this squad out further, might add meltas or maybe plasma's can't decide yet.

" border="0" />

The first of many thunderwolves. I got 4 from gamesroomclearout2010, and got another few on order......... does anyone know where I an get some smaller wolves to act as a meat shield???

Again, any tips, comments would be greatly appreciated

Hi Econtutor

I use black as a basecoat, then heavy drybrush fenris grey on top, shade it down with a badab black wassh then light drybrush fenris grey again.
Light drybrushing of fenris grey/ space wolf grey for highlights.

I get overeager and start to build an army then when i see the paintwork involved i back off a bit, but i feel embarassed when i see all my friends armies at the gaming table, that i need to give it a go.

I am actually finding it quite therapeutic

As you can see I like to jump from model to model, hence I get nothing done :(

But i am getting there. Here is a sneaky peak at my Land Raider Redeemer

Hey hamhamlunchbox.

I have actually been following your blog, and love the wolves you are making up, I especially like the battle damage and detailing of the hatches on your predator (the lenses the crew use to view)

Your mkV armour variants are awesome too.

I will consider your suggestion, it looks good.

I have posted a few more pics of my dread and the thunderwolves i recently got. Hope you like them

" border="0" />

This is my dread, he is sometimes used as Bjorn the Fell-handed, which is where the Wolf Claw came from, otherwise he is Irnst the indomitable. I want to re-do the banner as it was rushed and looks weak compared to the rest of the model

" border="0" />

The Wolf Claw, deceptively simple to make, this is a mark 1, I have a mark 2 in the pipeline...... this time using a venerable arm, with the fist, a terminator storm shield heat wrapped around the arm and 3 slightly longer blades to match the fingers..... will post a pic when it is done.

" border="0" />

Shield was just an idea to count as extra armour.

" border="0" />

My 4 thunderwolves are almost complete, any ideas for names???

" border="0" />

Rideres need finishing off. Thanks to gamesclearout2010 for the wolves.

" border="0" />

I tried to make them as individual as possible, the black 1 is in honour of my friends dog Odie, and also in homage to the black wolf that dies at the beginning of 300 (not to mention blackmaned fenrisian wolves)

Again all feedback is welcome.

I'm digging the dread! I think a "how to" on the claw would make a great update.

Post by: dantay_xv

Hi Econtutor,

Yeah, I just thought the claw was more fitting somehow.

To make the claw itself is very easy.
1 Storm shield from the space wolves sprue, 4 zombie scythe blades, a small amount of green stuff 1 dreadnought close combat arm.
You do not really need to file down the hand on the shield as you need it raised for the claws.
Form a square or shield shaped piece of green stuff and attach to the shield. Make sure you have extra due to the curvature of the arm.
Attach to the arm, try to keep the green stuff as smooth as possible, i made mine to fit as if it is clamped on so the arm is more bulked up. Think like the wrist thing the Predator has to activate the nuclear device or heal himself.
Snip the scythe blades from the scythe, and using glue or green stuff, attach them to the wolf claw housing. Jobs a goodun!!!

My dread only has 2 finger thingies because mine went missing, so i used a trygon alpha's mandible bits to make some, i think it looks okay.
If you wanted to get a bit fancier you could use guitar wire as power cabling and run it uo the arm like the heavy flamer tubing.
As i said deceptively simple.

I will try to use a terminator storm shield next time and 3 bigger claws to mirror the fingers on a venerable dreadnought arm, i think it will look awesome.
Another nice ad simple conversion i have done on a metal SW dread was to lop off the old claws and just attach zombie scythe blades to make them very long and wicked.

I think the dread in the codex with the skaven blades on its fist looks lame as its not really wolfy, Does anyone else agree??

Btw if you have pics of conversions you have tried please feel free to put them here.

This site is a great place for new ideas and from what i have seen of people like hamhamlunchbox, gitsplitta, sons of orar, blackhand, econtutor and a ton of others i could mention its inspirational to see how some guys envisage the world of warhammer 40k and their interpretation. I am new here but i am loving it.

So thoughts views, ideas opinions c&c all welcome. Oh and names for my 4 thunderwolves too please!!

LOL long reply over, until next time

A quick update on the modelling front.

A few pics of the scouts.... i did 2 test colours can you tell me which you prefer please?

" border="0" />

Darn it he lost his hand...

A view of their backsides, let me know what you think.

My other scouts designed for the last codex.

And now some bikers ( I have 17 in all different states of disrepair...)

Anyway enough waffle, I am off to spend the weekend with my son. Will catch up with you all later, and as alway, opinions welcomed

Okay, so I really need some help!!!!

I am looking to build up a dreadnought, and make the mark 2 wolf claw arm, (plus take pics to make a tutorial) but i need a few parts, can anyone help me please????

I really do not want to spend a bucket load of money on buying a dread for 1 arm and a bunch of zombies so........

I need a venerable dreadnought humanised hand piece. I could also do with some zombie scythes.

I am willing to buy/ trade for these parts..... i have a selection of old SM captain/ sergeant models....... very old metal termies and old SW terminators/ SM's and other stuff.

If anyone can help please I'd be forever grateful.

Also on the scrounge for norse marauder stuff too

Okay, so i got impatient..... and my wife will not let me buy another dread, so I am beginning to work on the hand by other methods.
I have an old metal space wolf dread, so I will use that and scavenge all i can from him.

So first off is the hand.... I will make it from scatch with emissaryofdark's help (teaching me to sculpt) tonight we put the basic outline into place for building up the hand.
To do this i removed the claws and filed the surfaces flat.
" border="0" />
et voila, now we are ready to make a hand.
To get the general shape of a hand can you guess what i used???
" border="0" />
Yup you clever puppies, i used the corner sections of the sprue frame.

And this is how it looked when we were done.
" border="0" />
" border="0" />
This give us a rough outline of the hand and from here we get to play with green stuff, i will try to keep you posted on how i get on.

PS, here is a longfang emissaryof dark made for me.... its nuts isn't it?? I love it
" border="0" />

As usual any feedback would be great, whether its positive or negative...... feel a bit like i am talking to myself sometime :(

Loving the pose of Ragnar... only negative is the sword doesnt look right, other than that nice conversion work!

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2010/10/12 11:07:51

Post by: dantay_xv

Thanks regnak, in what way does the sword not look right? Is it the pose or the sword itself? i.e. not a chainsword.

For me, i think its the left leg pose, it makes him look less like he is charging and more like he is falling forward, plus i cant figure out how to sculpt the (now redundant) toe claws on his boot.

Anybody got any ideas how to sculpt/ sort it?

I think the pose looks fine, just mean the sword itself.. just doesn't look right... looks like a generic medieval sword and should be something more special. Doesn't need to be a chainsword but I think shape needs to be different. Other than that very minor issue I like what you have done

Cool, I tried the emperors champion sword as it was left over from converting him to a wolf priest. I do kinda see where you are coming from.

Okay, new sword time

Apart from Abaddons all consuming sword of doom, any ideas on what would give him an edge (geddit?? giggles) and look really cool??

This question is open to everyone (even you at the back hiding away!!!)

I love your dred man. I also think your bikes are ace. I've got some to assembe and will be forced to steal your use of the chaos spears and hand weapons.

Could we get more angles on your landraider? I am in the middle of one of my own SW raider and it is of special intrest to me right now..

Am running a bit slow just now, been playing a few games to get a feel for the army, plus mass repairs of my wolves (fixing up around 18 packs of SW's takes a lot of work, glad my friend helped out) but should get back on track over the next few days with more piccies

@Thanks Asherian command, glad you like them.

@Glimpse the void: let me know what angles and i will try to help you out with pics.
Go for it with the marauder stuff, it looks really cool.

My army idea is 1st war of Armageddon, so it will be a mix of diferent companies fighting together, so bbikers will belong to Egil Krakendoom
Scouts belong to Erik Morkai

Was wondering about the wolf on the Land Raider... shoud i paint it in flame colours or leave it white to match the Wolf Guard unit riding within?

Okay, this is just for you glimpse the void, i took some snaps of the Land Raider for you..... if you want i will do some bike pics later, i have 18 bikes.
" border="0" />
Land raider with doors open, i decided it might be fun to do the interior, even if almost nobody will see it.

" border="0" />
Land Raider with doors closed, th cloak on the assault cannon is from a chaos sprue, I cut it to go round and greenstuffed the joins, then a blob of greenstuff at the front to show its nailed on.

" border="0" />
Side view number 1

" border="0" />
Side view number 2.
Should I paint the white wolfs head on the Land raider in Flame colours for fun or leave it white, as the termies inside have white wolves on their shoulderpads?

" border="0" />
Sponson pattern. Copied from the dwarf lords shield (I have used the shield as a storm shield for my Arjac conversion)

" border="0" />
Door design, set to look like Krom Dragongaze's great company symbol.

And now for something slightly differentBut still Space wolfy

" border="0" />
My old vindicator, scourge of xenos everywhere.
And.....
" border="0" />
Ragnar, whom i painted about 10 years ago, along with the vindicator.... you can see how my choice of coolurs and paint style have changed/ deteriorated through lack of use. My top tip for today is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

As always comments, tips, ideas etc on a postcard with a stamped, self addressed envelope and i will get back to you.

Ive always thought that using pieces from chaos kits on rough arrmies like the space wolves is always a good idea. I don't mean making the wolves look like chaos but just little details like the clips of the chaos bolters hanging freely or changing a chaos backpack and putting it on the marines.

Anyway great army so far, the dread looks really good!

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2010/10/14 13:06:07

Post by: dantay_xv

Thanks killakan, i am glad you like them, the marauder stuff rocks on them as does the application of a few dwarf parts for the more ornate wargear.
i would draw the line though at chaos backpacks as it breaks up the silhouette too much and chaosifies them.
High rimmed shoulder pads or boltpistol arms withtyhe gloves are good.... beyond that is into the realms of the 13th company.

Anyways questions that need answers and you (yes even you!!!) can help here:

1. Which scout colour scheme do you guys prefer, lighter or darker greys?

B. Any ideas for Thunderwolf names. I have 4 thunderwolves now (another 2 on the way) and so far 1 is called Odin, but I need 4 more names (Geoff, Spot, Patch and Rover just aren't scary enough)

C. The Ragnar conversion... if I was to swap out the sword, what should it be swapped for?? Another sword but what style, or even should it be a sword???

4. Flames on the Land Raider or No?

And another thing. Does the old Ragnar look okay? should i keep him in the army? And if so, should the conversion become a new wolflord in his own right???

Hope to hear from you guys soon.

IMO
1. Dark colors for scouts, it suits their stealthy you can't see me nature, and general "doesn't play well with others" type attitude.
2. Go w/ norse mythology, or Scandinavian names in general. This website is cool. http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/europe/norse/articles.html
3. If it's gotta be a sword, see if you can get one of those Rad WOC ones. I say go with an Axe, but that's just my own taste.
4. Do you mean painted flames, or modeling a gout of flames from your cannons? I think that painted flames would be to much, but I am considering modelling flames for my reedemer.

@ glimpse the void. Thanks for the compliments... I have been watching your thread too, and the fact you built yoiur own land raider sorta blows my mind as for the most part yoiu cannot notice the difference between it and the gw one.
As you have gone this far with it, maybe splurge on some forge world brass etchings for it.... i think i might for mine to make a bit more wolfified. Although as it stands it is fine just now...

For flames how about a little cotton wool on the flamestorm cannons barrels, bunch it tight for when you spray it black, then when you unfurl it you get nice black and grey wispy smoke bits... although i recommend you try it on something else before sticking it to the tank, then some slight discolouration at the barrel tips.

Your scouts look like they could take a world on their own, i really like what you did with the marauder kits, and i assume it is ice blue yoiu are using to create the blue glow effect on your models.... it makes the models jump out and give yoiu a focal point for them. Its amazing how diverse even 1 sm chapter can be.
Btw I also like the drop pods of yours but they need a little neatening up.

And i like your ideas too.... keep them coming!! Everyone please.

1 last question though: Does anyone know where i can get a lot of good norse/ celtic designs?... I have an idea to use them on vehicles, like i tried on the land raider for their top hatch and/ or rear doors. I found a few tattoo's but struggling foor good images... any tis would be ACE!! Thanks again

Man alive killakan, that is awesome stuff, i especially like some of the designs on page 11, they could be adapted for use on a rhino or something.

The round ones are quite complex, but simplified versions could work on shields or tank hatches.

Thanks I really appreciate it, folks better watch out, theres some painting to come soon.

For the Thunderwolves, if you're going Norse, then why not have a family troupe on the go? You've got Odin, if i remember my mythology right, you've got Ve and Vili as Odin's brothers, maybe take one of his sons along too? Perhaps Baldur?

My 2p for your consideration

Plenty of names to grab out there anyways! Loving the work so far mate, keep it up

Nice work mate.

Regarding normal wolves, the cheapest option is probably a box of goblin wolf riders and throw the goblins away.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440079a&prodId=prod840911

I admit they are a bit mono-pose but if you want a shed load of them thats no really an issue

Hi guys, no real update as i spent the weekend with ickle Ben (my 8 month old son) and wifey (both living with my folks while i work away) so no modelling.

@Jimmy72nd, glad i am not the only 1 to go through this and welcome to the club.... glad you like the models too.

@glimpse the void... your link to the Norse names is great, I am certainly going to be using it in the future to name most if not all the Space Wolves and the names you have chosen for yours is cool.

@Marushi It sounds like a great idea to do that and again I am glad you like what you are seeing. I hope to get more on the net soon.

@Emmkay That is also a grand idea, if you look at the 4 thunderwolves that i have they are all identical bar the paintjob, so monopose isnt too bad as you can get round that with a variety of paintjobs.

My next (next??? what about all that painting i hear you cry) mini-project is to take the Ragnar conversion, change out the weapon and head-swap, plus redo the shouilder pad to create Bran Redmaw. The Ragnar of old is too nice to leave in a box, so I decided to use him unmodified.

Dantay's top tip: Do not invest time or money in a GW airbrush... I am on my 3rd as the others were defective. I wasted a bunch of propellant and paint, to get only 1 side of my 20 termies done. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

If you are looking for regular wolves on the cheaps, I recommend picking up a box of Chaos Warhounds. They are priced well and look so damn mean. The mutations are glued on separately so you wouldn't have to use them. They don't have tails, so you'd have to either green stuff some or just not worry about.

Hey harms66, got to apologise as i deleted the pics off of my phone and my wife has deleted them from the deskto p . I can't change the past but in future will try to do it by attachments.

Anyways due to my pesky spraygun breaking (on my third!!!) I pushed on with several mini projects. I still have the hand conversion to do on my dread but I will get back to it.

My main mini-project has been making up Harald Deathwolfs ride..... I have done it by chopping up and bulking out a thunderwolf model. I have 5 (4 painted). I got them from gamesclearout2010. So a big thank you to him psssst he does a ton of other stuff too. If you do get anything from him... tell him dantay sent you
Anyway on with the pics.

So I have done both sides now, bulking up some new front shoulders..... tomorrow I can put the legs on and maybe sculpt a tail (yippee almost done!!) however not 100% sure about the neck and my fur making isn't great..... a friend suggested putting a rige between the neck and back or a mane like Canis Wolfborn's

I have started working on my Bran Redmaw conversion.

Talkiing of Canis Wolfborn, hope you like my new WIP pics... I have been a very busy bunny

Also been working on the wolf riders for my 4 assembled thunderwolves.

Once again I hope you enjoy & please please please chip in with input... i do value it and enjoy the feedback

Generally the Thunder Wolves I've seen look too small to carry the marines, but the bulk out job you've done may work, post a few more pictures please.

Hi Harms.

Just noticed how blurry the pics are, glad you like the models though.
Not sure if this is what you are meaning about more pics, but just to give you an idea of scale for the models.

Will hopefully get the bulked out wolf done this weekend (wife permitting) I need to make up the legs, build a tail, then modify the riders legs to fit on the wider body.

@ jimmy72nd I have seen your marines before, and its a really nice colour scheme. The blue lightning claw with the orange and white gives a great contrast.

Was the orange hard to paint and highlight?

Ok, that last lot of picture shows the general problem the Thunder Wolves models being too small, just look at the difference in size between the two types of wolves, the Canis Wolfborn seems about the right size where the other looks a little small.

I'd like to see more on the bulked out converion, so sod the wife and get it done.

I can kinda see where you are coming from about the wolf being small, as the codex says that a thunderwolf can be as big as a rhino.
When you see it up beside a space marine though you could imagine it being the size of a large horse, plus I like Canis being bigger because he is the top dog.
Plus in pure gaming terms they should really be on cavalry bases..... making it any bigger for the sculptor would make that near on impossible. Canis only has the larger base because of his special character status and the rule about the number of attacks he gets.
Also for me the resin wolves are around half the price of Canis, which at £25 each (for Canis) would be a BIG expensive conversion job to do another 5 or 6.
Saying that I havent put the wolf up against, say a rough rider or the like for perspective

Lol, I am sure the wife will give me some time to get it done even though we only get to see each other at weekends just now.... she goes to bed so i can watch MOTD in peace so as I make progress I will keep you all up to speed.

The bulked out wolf will probably not be as broad as Canis but should rival it in height... considering using the White Wolf Grandmaster as a conversion piece for Harald Deathwolf. What do you think?

Hi, glad you like my stuff, vehicles arent the be all and end all of an army and it hastaken a good few years to accumulate them..... they aren't cheap.

Saying that chrging full-tilt at stuff with my Land Raider is so fun

As for thew spears they came from the marauder horseman boxed set, i had a friend who had a pile of them sitting spare, so traded a few bits for them.

Are you new to dakka? If so welcome, its's crazy and fun here

Are you gonna put up any pics of your comanies up? Would love to see what you have

Thanks element206, i added a little something from different races to the thunderwolves and will hopefully do the same with others if it doesnt lok too cluttered. I am hoping that as i start to game they can garner some more trophies to add to them.

I try to cut a deal with people when i play that if i win theygive me something to decorate a base with, however if i lose i will give them something in return. Helps to remember the fun games.... i do expect to see a few captive space puppies in my friends DE army though. They are nasty..... however they are flipping fragile against anything with decent armour

Thinking of going drop-pod-tastic, so this is a wip of my drop-pod.I am mounting it in a crater section (as i think they are cool!!) plus you can imagine the impact when it hits.

I left the harnesses out as i want to be able to use them for SW's and terminators.... besides all SW's know that strapping in is for pansies

The smaller craters are okay but then the doors do not fully open.

Any ideas for the crater beside the drop-pod, considered water effects or lots of dead nids/ aliens from the blast impact but not too sure which way to go..... so ideas please

@rosemountainz: thanks for the compliments, i like your orky dreads, very unique and very fun.

@Rex-Nine: a very nice tip and i may try it in the future, however i have no goblin wolf heads to try it out or the undead wolves...... however if someone wants to trade with me for them check my link to the dakka swap shop. It may jusst be coste effective to gs some chaos hounds. We shall see.

Not much of an update here modelling-wise. I do not have any real fluff for my army, but am kinda thinking 1st armageddon war.... a mix of great companies all fighting, so bikers belong to Krakendoom (expect a cool wolf lord model there) grey hunters (3 or 4 packs) belong to Bran Redmaw, Thunderwolves belong to Harald deathwolf and various other units being used so that every great company is represented somewhere.

Also spares me the monotony of painting yellow shoulderpads with black wolves on them.

It also leaves some openings for future projects (GreyKnight allies, Inquisitor allies pre-tramelling of the sagas, or Imperial Guard representing Armageddon PDF).

So who knows where this will go?

Post by: dantay_xv

Hey folks, time to report in, notr much modelling time this week as I have had a lot on.... next week will be the same as I will be staying with my folks for a bit.

Anyway without further ado.... my new project.

ENGIR KRAKENDOOM

I know he is not strictly game legal (a wolf lord with an attack bike), however I have designed him (with lots of help from emissary1701) so he will be pinned in the sidecar and can be removed and based during games

I am trying to do a bit of background fluff for him.

As we know from the codex, Engir hails from the Southlands of Fenris and like all Southlanders he was born with innate skills in navigation and seafaring. Coupled with his ferocious will to win and his fighting skills, he led many raids on other Fenrisian tribes successfullyy striking from unseen quarters and using his superior seamanshipto outmanoeuvre and outfight his foes.

He finally met his match in the Isles of Iron, ancestral lands of the Iron priests where he led his dragon ships on a raid for iron to make weapons. His dragon ships clashed with the iron ships sent from the isle to intercept them. A great battle ensued. Superior seamnship and ferocity versus superior technology and weapons. For a time it looked as if Engir would win out, crippling fully half of the iron ships and allowing most of his fleet to break through, however eventually his ships were whittled down and he was forced into a fighting retreat.
Having lost a great many men and ships he turned at bay to allow his men to escape and led a fierce countercharge into the opposing fleet. He fought like a man posessed slaying all who came at him with harpoon and axe, but even he couldn't hold out forever. Through gritted teeth he fought on his indomitable will keeping him going even when his body gave out, all wounds to the fore, he was laid low
By chance or by direction of the Allfather Ulrik the Slayer oversaw the battle and seeing a great warrior, he took Engir before his ship sunk and he was lost to the depths.

Needless to say he passed all trials set before him to become a Space Wolf and his skills have been put to great use by his predecessors and now the Great Wolf himself. As has always been the way, Engir has always been a raider and over the centuries the skills he had as a fenrisian warrior have been honed by centuries of warfare. His specialisation on land is to use mechanised fast moving troops. In particularhe likes to use bikes and attack bikes, all the better for outmanoevring and harrying the enemy, so that he can land the kiling blow. He is always found in the vanguard of his great company, leading his men when a drop pod assault cannot be used (for this is Ragnar's domain) riding into war on his customised attack bike. His troops almost exclusively hail from the Southlands much like him and it gives him immense pride that many of the swiftclaws in his force come from his own tribe. Only a few Northmen with unsurpassed skills have made it through his recruitment process.

Amongst the other Wolf Lords he is hailed as a consummate raider (and pirate) however his insular nature and unique recruitment requirements set his company apart from the others. This has led to a few of the more 'traditional' great companies to view him and his packs as outsiders and it is something he has encouraged, further enhanced by the wearing of a pelt from a great seamomster rather than that of a wolf. It is known that when on Fenris, Engir can be found on the seas hunting prey with his wolfguard as he did when he was a young warrior. Preferring this to running through the glaciers hunting and feasting like the others. Over recent years Engir has become ever more reclusive and withdrawn. However he has also become ever more aggressive and can be found where the fighting is thickest, always seeking the biggest and most powerful prey to spit on his mighty rune etched harpoon or to hack down with his axe. Some say his recklessness is due to him being taken by visions of his death and he is recklessly seeking it at the hands of a worthy foe. Others believe he has been spoken to by Russ himself and is trying to prove himself worthy of his Primarch. Of these rumours he will not be drawn, all is known is that he fights with the vitality of a bloodclaw and the brains of a thunderwolf. His saga is long and proud... long may it continue.

With the war on Armageddon raging all around and threatening to consume the whole Armageddon sector Logan Grimnar now needs all his Wolf Lords and Great Companies to fight together as brother wolves. Aware of the potential schism developing within his Chapter he has opted for mixing the companies, creating several combined arms forces, so far Krakendooms packs have fought with distinction saving the lives of countless battle brothers but will this be enough to bond them all as never before. Or will the more fractious elements within his army, stop his warriors uniting and sealing the Space Wolves fate?

Any comments or ideas to flesh out his story would be greatly appreciated, I am hoping to do a bit for each prominent character within the Company of Wolves which I have raised, so ideas, thoughts C & C always welcome.

Anyway time for pics.

Oh.... any ideas on decoration for shield and sidecar etc would be great..... come on folks you been quiet for far too long

Hey Raen, sorry it took so long for me to get back to you and my plog. I recently moved to my folks so modelling, painting and use of computer has been rather restricted.

You were asking about armour.

Basically black primer.... fenris grey basecoat.... badab black wash.... fenris grey drybrush..... then a few highlights by progressively lightening the fenris grey with sw or the light grey foundation. Bob's your uncle and jobs a ggod un.

As for the wolves a lot of credit should go to emissary1701, we looked at a lot of different wolves and tried to match the colours to them. Atleast they would look natural and not too outlandish.

Thanks for the com[pliment on the freehand on the LR jetjetex.
I am proud of the slamestorm cannnons as they are really freehand. For big stuff like the wolf's head i actually drew the LR on to a sheet of paper and marked out the armour and then drew the design on top. Cut it out, glued it on then painted it. I know its cheating but it works well. I plan to do the same on the rhino and razorbacks that i have.

I am glad you like the stuff and I hope to get something of an update going soon..... I have been quiet for far too long.

Great work all around, so assume Im giveing the same praise thats been said.

The dread claw hand is a great idea I assume that its a terminator claw cut and stretched out to fit properly, and the hand with the spur is worth repeating and by that Im probally going to steal the idea.

Hey you know what, since you are posting for trades on the Marine Swap maybe we should trade. Ha ha, dakka thread promotion.

Would be good RL has been getting in the way a lot, my wife having depression has been tough but getting back into it.

The Dreads claw was made from 4 zombie scythe blades set in GS then a Space wolf cobat shield set over the top as a housing for the power bits (and to hide my bad GS-ing).
It would be easy to embellish around it with giutar wire and stuff to make it better.

You are more than welcome to steal myy ideas, lol, afterall i didnt copyright them

And trading will be great.

THREADOMANCY!!!!... It's threadomancy I tell you. The inquisition must be warned!!!!

Okay so here we go. I have been on Dakka for the past few months admiring everyone else's work, but not getting on with my own. Real life issues have really been cutting into my modelling time. However things in my home life are getting better and so it is time to dip my toes back in.

What I would like to show you is the size of the army that I have accumulated and maybe then you can see what I am trying to do. My original concept was to have a small flexible force which then slowly grew with what if's and trying to compensate for any eventuality.

When I joined Dakka I had a rethink about my army.... to many they are just blobs of plastic or metal, but to tose who invest time and money into their collections they are so much more than that and so I decided to give them somethong they deserve. A background. By giving them a story (or as a wolf a Saga) it gives me a reason to collect a vision to shape my collection by and a motivaation to get them done. At this point I have not set myself a deadline to paint my models, although that may come in the future if I get lazy.

The simple background of this army is that they are a Space Wolf army fighting during the first war of Armageddon. For those not in the knowduring the 3rd century of the 41st millenium the Daemon Primarch Angron led a huge army to Armageddon to wage war on the Imperium. For a time the war went badly for the defenders they were pushed back from the primary continent and suffered horrific losses.

For an unknown reason Angron halted his armies and for several weeks he stopped to build grand monuments to his god Khorne. Speculation is that the warp storm which brought him to Armageddon was abating and he needed a way to keep the links with the immaterium strong.

When he broke for Armageddon Secundus, Angron was met by a huge surprise.... the Wolves had answered the pleas of the governor of Armageddon and they stood firm against Angron and his legions of berserkers and daemons. The Space Wolves had reiforced the defences during the lull in fighting and strengthened the resolve of the embattled guardsmen. The defenders took a fearsome toll on the deamonic hordes and where the fighting was fiercest the wolves were sure to be found, cutting down their foes with bolter and axe. Such sagas were made that Russ would be proud!!

At the height of the battle Angron and his bodyguard of 12 bloodthirsters joined the fray, cutting a great swathe through the defenders, neither guardsman nor wolf could stand before them. Seeing the danger The Great Wolf played his trump card. At a signal from him a full company of 100 Grey Knight Terminators teleported into the battle and ass\ulted Angron and his bodyguard. Angron was defeated, cast back to the warp with his dark lieutenants, however the toll taken on the Grey Knights was terrible.... only a habndful survived the titanic battle.

With Angron gone the warp storm blew out and the daemons faded, leaving behind the traitor guardsmaen and khorne troopers to be mopped up by the victorious defenders.

So ther you have it.... my theme for my army, rather than use 1 grea company I intend to use elements from all of the Great companies to show jus how big and confusing the first war for Armageddon really was. My army is nowhere near done and it will be a long slog to get it done, but I hope you can follw me through my journey. It is pretty much a restert if you will and I intend to use all of the great advice I was given in the past to help get this pushed along. I would actually like to thank those who have been watchimng this for a while, please stick around I could do with your input as I go.

For anyone interested I am going into the GMS. This is for another project I am running. As part of the war for Armageddon, I am sure the Inquisition would have been there to help fight Chaos. This is also to help me keep focussed and as a motivator to push my painting skills as far as I can go and to learn new skills. It will also kkep me frsh too with new and interesting mini-projects. If anyone is interested in doing a GMS please pm me and put a note on the GMS forum too.

Thanks

Okay time for pictures...... Lots and lots of pictures!!!!!

Good God when will you never find the time to paint that lot.
I keep mine to a minmum, that many models on the go would just depress me.

Where did you get the spear arms from?

@ Harms66 Lol, it is a question I keep asking myself too.... I am a prolific collector, but my painting time is very slow. My ambition is to one day field a fully painted army.

I have a GW spraygun, and when it doesnt leak propellant it is great for laying down the base grey, then i will try to use it for spraying badab black as the shade.
From there they will need to be done by hand for the drybrushes of Fenris Grey up through the huighlights.

I would recommend it for block spraying (that is what it is designed for). But it will in no way do any detailed work, you need a proper airbrush for that.

Wolf Guard Hengist took me bout 10-12 hours to paint and the dread around 18-20. Both by hand

And Harms you are right it does depress me seeing a wall of models, which is why I want to use the Great MArine Swap as a motivational tool. By focussing my efforts into 1 model I can learn new techniques and become a better (and maybe slower) modeller all round.
As much as it will probably pain me to do this.... I might steal Majortom11's idea and farm part of the army out. Get them painted to a basic standard minus things like armpads etc.... Then i can do all the fine details and shoulderpad/ banner designs myself. I have a friend who might be able to help.

I can then do the faces, fine detail work, weathering techniques myself. Using what I learn from the GMS and still keeping the army "my own".

BTW there are a few not shown yet

As for spears, do yo mean the bikers, these are standard space marine arms, but using marauder horsemen spears.

If you mean the Bloodclaws, it was a lot of chopping and hacking of Space Marine arms and some biker arms repositioned to hold spears hammers etc. They wer done before the pesky BA and SW 2 handed weapons came out. I can try to get more detailed pics of the arms if these are the spear arms that you mean.

Okay so not much done . However do not despair.. I am in negotiations to get my wolves progressed a bit, but for now I have been indulging myself with a few GMS's

So much for maintenance of aim I am aware of my failings and will be sure to correct it

Anyway a bit of progress on Thing 1's GMS scout.

Hope you like it

Hi Davidjones. I really struggle. I am hoping my spraygun will help get me over the worst of it as I can throw down a few quick coats on everything then work on it from there.

I really need to learn how to do a conveyor system, because i get hooked on doing just 1 model too easily.

If you have any tips please share with me

well now that i mostly scrolled through and stopped whenever something took my fancy i have to say...: you have a pretty enourmous army there with you mate!
a collector you say? well a collection you certainly have there! and quite a very diverse one at that! some very unique minis you have made and collected. i really like the way you made those goblin wolfrider wolfes into bigger wolves...the way you sculpt with GS makes a very good inspiration to make capes and stuff from fur myself...
i also read your fluff concerning the armageddon scenario and i also liked that very much! as for having too much minis lying unpainted around... i suffer from that same bug that has bitten me... i have endless amounts of IGs and warzone mins lying around and a half takcled SM army for me and another one for my oldest son too... then there are too much `nids and even orcs one day to paint... depressing you say....well could be right^^

as for the spacewolfs... what i truly find amating is the way that no two models seem to look alike... with regular SM players this normaly common as the average SM loks like the average SM...with Space puppies you somehow get around that problem as every mini looks like a special character in itself...thus making the army much fluffier than other vanilla marine armies...! seeing your space wolves i even haggle with the idea that i have choosen the wrong fisrt army once^^ well but i am all in for now with the footslogging IGs so no faer in stealing too much ideas as of now^^

keep well mate and keep those pictureloaded updates coming^^ the worl needs more fluffy furries around here^^

Okay so been working on my Space wolves intermittently, mainly getting everything primed and greyed.

Thing 1's scout is done construction wise, so painting to be done next.

The next GMS is for 1-i. This is my rough build so far. I am liking it, but ity needs a lot of cleaning up, which is good as it is just pinned so can be split up easily... I need to choose either a bare head yelling or a helmet, not sure which.

All C&C welcome.

i´d go for a yelling head or a beaky helmeted one with that ponytail attached...if you have them...the latter even more as i am a fan of the beaky helmets^^

will you GS the gaps on the hand and arm on the left?
for me the pose looks somehow a bit akward...mostly about the shield wielding arm...
also will you be adding some wires and decorations to the handle of the axe?

keep up the good work and i am looking forward to see some paint in your pics^^

Beaky with hair piece sounds interesting but you can be the final judge on that, like what your doing with him.

Also thing1 is getting an awesome scout.

Hi 1-i I will go with the beaky hem and see how we go.

I know the wepons loadout called for a bolt pistol, so I plan to put a holstered pistol on him.

Thing 1's scout was fun to do, and got me back into learning how to handle greenstuff. Each gms is a different lesson, so for example, yours will be to learn how to use plasticard and gs in a different way. And also in learning various poses for models to get differnt effects

So although your model is different with a different dynamic/ feel to it I hope it will be just as awesome.

Hi Vik,

I actually am considering a new left arm.... this one came from the Grey Knight set so I had to clip off the Storm bolter which left it looking a bit ugly... the great thing about the GK set is that the hands are not attached to the arms, therefore I can play around with the posing more. And if folks want storm bolters I can leave them in place I will GS the gap though and if I stick with this arm I plan to GS the damage too.

I kinda understand what you mean about the shield arm, but if you hold something like a bin lid in your right and a broom pole in your left.... then do a cross body haymaker type swing.... tray and observe where your arms goes, especially as you twist your torso. If he was sprinting a la Logan Grimnar then I would have considered having his arm trailing, but also his arm down to his side is more un-natural and it would rob his swing of any power (to my mind).

The axe is very plain for now, but I do plan on working up the haft to make it look like a functioning weapon, it was just more important to see how it fit together.

While it looks like I am being defensive... I actually like this kind of C&C as it makes me re-examine my model again with a new perspective and not with rose tinted "aren't I awesome" glasses on. Besides You often spot things I miss.

About my SW's, going back to your earlier comment.... 1 thing I hated was the limited poses for metal models so I intentinally set out to make them all look different, whether using different heads or swapping weapons, it all helps to make them unique... I do plan at some stage to give tham all names too. The hard part is to keep them individual, but still look like a cohesive force....Hopefully by having the same armour colour that should help do it.

Vanilla marines are excellent too.... because if you go homebrew you can make your own fluff, and style tham as you wish... remeber whatever is in one codex to make an army cool, they lose stuff to compensate. I may have TWC, but I have no Ironclads, thunderstrikes motf's etc... besides as a first army you can nail the core rules easily.... armies like sw's and ba's have specail rules and stuff which if you are not used to can really skew yourway of playing or seeing the rules.

this makes me smile^^ i too have made attempts with household items to get certain poses to look right...so this is a very good way to go^^

seems each day there is more to the greyknight set that would be sueful to have... darn...money issues to this hobby are a pain in the rear^^

While it looks like I am being defensive...
not in the least...this is art and you have every right to defend your work, and you even didn´t try it that much...oh by the way...if you keep that shiled...i am not that known in fluff terms ... are the shield attached by the gloves or worn in the hands? if the former than everything is good as is, if the later and more todaylooking thing to do would be using two tiny dots of GS and get a shieldhandle for the fist...

1 thing I hated was the limited poses for metal models so I intentinally set out to make them all look different, whether using different heads or swapping weapons, it all helps to make them unique
this is the very truth of the hobby i guess...well actually since i have postponed to oblivion my `nid army i think every model should look unique... if you use too much metal ones, then your army tends to look casted...(no pun intended^^) so i think even necron players want a unique look to their fighters...all the more with those minis that ressemble even more human looking figures...and i really again paraise the effort to name each mini of yours... in a game i think this will prevent you from senslessy sacrifice your minis without real reasons...with a complete named artmy you will be a far better commander! that is my vision of course only^^

Another weekly update, this is the slowish progress on 1-i's GMS wolf, let me know what you think...

Progress from last night, not much done tonight as I am w for the 24 hour cure process before i can play with the gs more. Hope you like. This will require a little bit of imagination.

But I present (in pieces) Hrothgar Wyrmsbane.

He gets his name from the huge axe he wields, the blade is made from the claw of a giant daemonic wyrm that he slew... The battle cost him his own cherished weapon, so he took the claw and had the Iron Priests forge it into a mighty axe with which to smite all foes of Russ and the Allfather. The axe is very light considering its size and the claw has never lost its edge, no matte how many wars Hrothgar has fought in.

I am waiting for the GS to cure, then sand and smooth it, maybe do a little embellishment on the axe head, press moulded wolf head for example.. The shield will get neatened up and sanded too, ready for freehand madness. All other GS-ed items to be neatened up as well

Hope you like as it is my first serious attempt at plasticard and trying new things with GS.

Was considering battle damaging him, what do folks think?? Again 1-i the final decision will be yours.

All C&C welcome as it helps me become a better modeller.

Thankfully he did upload to Dakka.

So far you your work is looking good, the GS wood grain looks true. The axe haft could be evened out with a small file but thats just assuming that it is uneven in sections.

I didnt see the axe head pic but the idea fills me with the happy feelings of a vikings vacation.

Battle damage, well only one model in the bunch has BD but if the creative bug is forceing you to add it then feel free.

guess it all depends on the script...never tried yet the spoiler anyway... so i just think you had a typo there...? well anyway your stuff looks good in my book^^ the axeblade looks by the way promising... i would do a very thin layer of gs tover that and add thus a bit of texture the easyway... small lines or even some inscription is then possible i guess...
one thing tho bugs me a bit... why did you choose to make a wooden shield in the fortieth millenia? is this according to some fluff of yours? like the look but lack your thoughts so share them^^

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2011/05/11 11:16:33

Post by: dantay_xv

Hi Vik, glad you like the axe, Ihad considered the gs, and press moulding a wolf head by chopping the small 1 free from the chain sword and using that. Not sure how it would look, but i like the idea of thin lines like fiiligree, might give it a try later. Th axe heas is already quite wide so a tad scared to go wider.

As for the shields, there are several reasons.

1. Its not technically a storm shield, more like a combat shield... storm shields in my head are very techno-advanced.
2. I use a lot of marauder shields, which are wood backed, so it keeps it more in line with those.
3. Thematically I like the idea of ye olde fashioned weapons, and I think it suits the viking norse look. Very archaic.
4. I envision the smaller marauder shields being kept by SW's as it was part of their wargear from before joining the SW ranks. For the larger shields, these would be made by the SW themselves after the transition, such as Bloodclaws using them as they are assault troops. In Prospero burns they do make a number of items themselves such as the knotted leather helms and the knotted leather bodysuits etc
5. I thought it would be a good challenge..

Practicality-wise, wood would not be a great option, as most things would pass through it, however the rim on it would suggest anothe material as a cover (leather or a coating of some form of metal) to make it hardier. It does nothing in games terms except look pretty, unless 1-i uses SM codex and uses it as a combat shield (5+ invulnerable save in CC).

fully understand your reasons...i had hoped for all of them^^ and you provided them^^ the underlayered traditional shaped shield sounds rather fluffy i would stick to that! also i like the idea of a bit of more background to the SM as only fighting monks...to be able to craft something by himslef gives plenty of character to the mini...(fluffwise thought, the SM did the crafting...of course when you customize a mini =instant win^^)
and also: where else when not on space wolves would old fashioned weapons and shileds look good on^^

hope to see more of your work soon

That would be about right...Thunderwolves are notorious for having very very bad tempers which is why you cant mix them into another unit like termies and marines.... The TWC keep eating them lol.

Atleast they can use the wooden shields as toothpicks or frisbees (fetch boy!!!!)

Finally 1-i's marine is complete.... just a touch up on th underside of the axe and a little furring of his tattered pelt and woohoo paint time!!

Btw shown a few different heads, peoples opinions please. It helps me with future modelling projects

Also arms shield axe are tacked in place, can rotate the shield a bit more, but worried about his head. Another thing is he is multi pose-able, turn the axe vertically up and lower the shield a bit, turn the head and you got a more defensive but still cool pose.

Re attach the wolf tail to the axe and done

Rant time...... why when you spend your hard earned cash on nice stuff like cameras does your wife always assume it is for her and you want to KEEP the crappy one!!!! Grrr

Next up is Polyd8 and Harms66, then monster of mayhem and wm360... I have a nasty feeling that I have missed someone out, if I have make yourself known and please acept my profuse apologies!!! Anybody else up for a trade??? If so check out the GMS thread

i´d still go for the beaky head...tho i have to say the wolfen head is olso high in my opinions^^
the axe look really good, like the work you did with GS on the blade...would like a closer look to that one in particular!
the pose looks very good i would rather see it as a slashing/fighting pose than a protecting one s, so keep the head facing that way.
as for tech that gets nicked by the wife...for once this is not my problem^^ my wife like analog photography much more so she sticks more to the old tech^^ but i guess since she got herself a laptop she wants to have a cam on her own... a female cam... mine is manly big and chunky...as it should be^^

am i missing something here? those names look confusing...

Well, I don't get as much time for these games as I like, and have recently become interested in WHFB. I am in the midst of converting a chaos dwarf army, so my Wolves aren't getting much play.

But something else has happened, I have remembered how distasteful I find space marines. I have always hated them, but some how I seperate space wolves from them in my mind. I've just started get bored with MEQ. I love the way the army looks, and the army i've build matches my play style and wins games. I just can't stand it thematically. I'm sad to say it, but it's just not me...

That being said, i've started reading the 2nd space wolf ombibus, and the 2nd book there is pretty awesome. Don't be suprised if I end up changing my mind, as it was Ragnar that got me into wolves from the start.

I have to say the first 3 rfom the space wolf omnibus are by far the weakest especially Ragnars claw, was like a kids book.

The fact that the 4th 5th and 6th all actually run like a series is good and the 6th is great. It might even get you to consider a new and deadly army

Space Marines in general do not float my boat, but there a few exceptions... Raven Guard and White Scars as thematically they can have a very strong identity. In fact a few times I considered doing my Wolves in white and making them White Scars.
After all Genghis Khan was known as the Wolf of the plains!!

For me I have always loved Norse mythology (go see Thor, Anthony Hopkins would be an ace Wolf Lord!!) so that makes me loyal.

You keep winning, I keep getting beat, will need to learn from you. Why not do a successor chapter like Harms Lycan or "gulp" use SW rules for a Chaos army??

I am the same with gaming and modelling time, something always crops up, Thats why I intend to enjoy doing the GMS..... and who are all members of the WolfBlade,

I also saw your Chaous Dwarves, did you sort out your obsidian colour? I am a VC collector myself, but I only have black knights

Lol whats wrong with Space Wolves?? and leave those fingers alone!!!

1st book was good, but was based on the early edition of 40k so the scout bit is now all wrong.

2nd book was weak, too easy to follow

3rd to 6th... all linked, the final 3 I think penned by Lee Lightner was a group of writers. Each better than the last.

Lol, fair enough, besides he seems to be favouring Blood Angels rules anyways.

Blood Angels books such as Deus Sanguinius, Deus Encarmine, or Audio cd Heart of Rage might be fun for him too.

Alternatively, ge Fall of Damnos... Ultramarines versus Necrons

So you guys have 2 Mantis Warriors and Doom Eagles, Eldar, Necron, Orks & Nids. Doesnt Thing 2 also have an Ork army too, oe was he borrowing yours?

He's borrowing mine... but we'll be getting another army soon... another damn marine army... just can't seem to avoid them. "I try to get out but the keep PULLING me back in!)

And effectively we'll end up with two ork armies.. one vanilla & one grot.

I have to say that most of the books are what I call comics for adult, well those that read.

They make a nice change from reality, and are general an easy read. Though I'm more into the Gaunt Ghost's personnel.

Wolves are cool, according to my son, they fight, drink and fight some more, no heavy thinking involved. Though due to the genetic engineering they do miss out on one of life's rewards.

Anything by Dan Abnett is great really!!

I also like several of the HH books

Mrs. Gits is going to start a sisters army of one by grabbing my propane torch and melting all my figures some day.

Oh wait, forgot my eldar... add another one to the total. Keep in mind I've been playing for 20 years, though I only had 2 armies until a couple of years ago.

Think I'm about done. Going to finish these up and just relax and play them for a while. Luckily, neither child is into "collecting" yet... they just want armies that look cool and can win. That's pretty easy to do.

I've think I read most of the WH40K novels, but still the best so far is Storm of Iron by Graham McNeill, if you've not read it do, you'll not be disappointed.

I've tried most Armies over the last 20+ years, but I keep coming back to Space marines (Wolves) though I'm starting to take an interest in the Necron if the rumours are true I may get in trouble with the wife again.

I started again after 5 odd years of collecting a Templar Army. After reading though the latest Space wolf codex I was hooked.
I youngest had just given up (again) trying to paint yet another army, so to keep his interest I past on to him 10,000 points worth of Templar.

He loves to play hates to paint.

Sweet. Just got through your thread- looked it over a while back when you were doing the wolf-mounts. I like the customization and greenstuff work you're doing on the latest figures... I wish I didn't do that with my 1K sons... once I start, it's friggin' addicting.

And a personal thanks for helping me research the Sons- those pics helped out a lot. In the pipeline (among another dozen or so projects ...) is to make a dread like the one in the picture...

Either way, keep them coming. I love seeing large portions of armies finished... or finished armies in general. Reminds me I've got a long way to go for my own..

Hey Inzhagi, sorry I didnt reply sooner, This rolled into page 2 of my subs so I missed it while I was in China.

Thanks for looking in, and I am glad you like the work on them. As far as I can see each Astartes is a character and a hero in their own right, soI like to make them a little bit individual.

That said I have decided to bite the bullet and passed my army over to emissary1701 for painting. With illness and hoidays and work getting out of control, modelling time is becoming almost non-existent. So I have entrusted my Space Wolves to his tender care.

He is painting the infantry up to table top standard or they will sit for the next 10 years or so untouched. I lolve painting but looking at so many of them undone seems to rob me of my desire to get them done.

I have known him for a while and I know he will not let me down. Even though he is a treacherous DA player grrrr....!!!
He wil get the main part done and leave me the shoulderpads and detailing to do, so I can still give them my touch.

Definitely no Dark Green armour to be seen on these guys

You should check out his gallery for the stuff he has done, He is a great guy.

Fingers crossed I can get everything else done in the meantime, pics to follow on soon.

Hi Monster, sorry it took so long to get back to you.... axe heads come from a range of models. Mainly dwarf or marauder axe heads, however if you could point out specifically which models you are interested in, I will give you a far more specific answer.

For example the 15 man Blood Claws pack (first group shot) have marauder or marauder horsemen axes.
The second Blood Claw pack have (left to right): dwarf 2 headed axes, hammer is Middenheim Knights on foot (Knights of the Unberogen I think). Next was Garagrim Ironfists axe head (you get 2 axes on chains with the model) axe haft made from cocktail stick, Axe head from dwarf box set with cocktail stick haft, spear is JainZar’s weapon blade on a piece on cocktail stick.
Next pic: Spear is SW sword on a pole, on his leg is dwarf axe, next is a dwarf horn with axe blade glued to the back, Next 2 are dwarf axes with cocktail sticks for hafts, and an old metal GK arm on the last.
Grey Hunter pack 1, marauder axe, Garagrims axe, dwarf axe, dwarf hammer, more dwarf axes.

TBH dwarf and marauder box sets are great for conversion, as alongside the weapons, I use marauder arms for scouts and their bare heads are pretty good too, and little dwarf bits such as pipes etc for decorations lol.
PM me if there is anything specific you are looking at, or want info from other pics

I am actually out a lot just now, so not checking in as much, PM me and I will see it in my emails and get back to you asap

Thanks

Danny

For poops and laughs, myself and emissary 1701 have decided to have a bit of a battle, basically bringing all we have to the table. So basically it is apocalypse but not using formations.

He has elected to bring his Eldar (5500 points) to face off against my Space Wolves. I have been totting it all up and without my Lord on attack bike (Engir Krakendoom) Lord on Thunderwolf (Harald Deathwolf) and 5 of my Thunderwolves I am topping out at around 7000-7500 points.

As I have a much higher points count I have asked him to include an allied army to even things up (Could be DA, DW or Ravenwing or even LotD) Eeeeeek!

I will put a full list of what I have and a points total shortly, so any tips would be good.

Kick off is in 2 weeks or so, so I will get pics up and running as we go, I have a feeling this could be a bloodbath. I think my army is well set up for infantry, but in a battle of this scale I do not have much armour or anti-armour, so we shall see.

Hey Knightley, you better believe that we are taking a ton of pics for this!

This will be my first apocalypse battle and also my first attempt at a battle report so hiopefully all will go well, I am actually quite nervous about it, as Dave aka emissary 1701 is a very good player plus all thiose characters and special rules to keep tabs on. It will be a lot down to not making oversights as much as general-ship, the table will be over-run with models so I doubt there will be any finesse form the Wolves.

Hi GiraffeX They are still being worked on, most of the Grey Hunters are done.

Hey folks, nothing for months and now w posts in as many weeks.

This past Friday I was visitted by a spirit early in the morning . Lol, actually it was Ben waking me to say Happy birthday, which had been on Thursday but I had to leave at 1am that day to go to Staffordshire for a work meeting so we postponed it a day.

And so I have been playing with my gifts.

I knew what I was getting because my lovely missus let me take some cash with me to Games Day and choose what I would like. I wasnt sure what to get, so I went with some fun non-wulfen projects and a bit random. The idea is that each will be done differently with a different palette and so help me practice my painting skills.

Most are in bits or partially assmbled as it will be much easier to paint this way.

So without further ado this is what is on my chopping block:

This is it all sitting there in front of me , mostly cleaned yup an dready to go for undercoating.

Captain Corvidae of the Raven Guard, help me to paint blacks and whites.

Tyberon, The Red Wake, Greys and yellows, he is the only fully assembled model so far as he is quite an open pose, needs some heat to straighten up the blades. Does anyone find it a bit excessive to have chainfists on top of his lightning claws?? And where is his crux terminatus?

Lufgt Huron, the legendary Tyrant of Badab, before he went loopy and had to be rebuilt, 40k's billion dollar man. Blues silver and golds.

This should make inmygravenimage a little jealous. Ordo Malleus Grand Inquisitor Lord Luther Rex. Should be an amazing addition to the Grey Knights. I may yet just use him as a Grand Master of the Grey Knights and then have no use for the familiars, we will see, a bit of ruminating needed, what do you think?

2 Forgeworld boarding Marines. I am definitely wolfing 1 of them up, not sure about the second one though, may rebag it or wolf it up too. I am a bit miffed and soon you will see why, really not sure what to do with it, any ideas?

Poorly cast Thunder Hammer, yet the Combi-melta beside it was fine, not sure how fixable this is, and as it is a limited edition, not sure if it can be replaced

Not sure if it is clear but the resin is way thin and light comes through all over it, Not sure if a lick of paint will sort it out. A bit annoyed.

I wish I got these for my birthday, so beautiful. Maybe when I win the lottery it will happen.

Thanks Vik, I will keep you all posted, not sure which to do first.

The powerpacks are nice, they are from the mark 3 space marines that Forgeworld make. The only issue was where the vent point was.. right up against the vanes on top of the backpack, which meant very careful filing.

The cars are nice arent they, although personal fave would have to be the Corvette Stingray. Now awaiting all the phillistine comments and beatings as the Jag is also a true classic

this is something i am really feeling strong about ... sadly i couldn´t find an english version of the short story that sums up the whole idea about the methode... it is called the "safari"...in german it is there...i really think this could help you...

no sub involved in that show^^ just a privat eye and his car...^^

and believe me... my techer didn´t want to stay in the same car when i was heading int the oncoming lights... seems i have a not good enough concentration in the car... i cant filter out non needed info... everything is interresting and thus speed regulations and other needful stuff is out of my view... that can make driving quite surprising^^

and my domlettes ^^ are fine! we are now heading towards next summer for felix start in school life.... with a smiling and a teary eye...they grow so fast...

Hmmm... I had considered giving him a hot toddy and see what happens.

When i was little i wouldnt sleep properly either, so my folks got something to add to my milk to help me sleep. Often they would give our labrador the leftovers of the bottle.
One day i didnt drink it and the dog got the whole bottle. The dog slept for 3 days, my dad kept having to carry him out to pee and stuff.
That dog was a real character, so many silly stories

Maybe I should give the book a read, thanks for the recommendation.

Glad to hear the kids are doing well, and yes they grow too fast. Micky was the same with her driving, she even crashed into the neighbours car because she forgot what the pedals did, i was a nervous wreck, but atleast 2 hours practice per night helped, almost led to divorce, but it helped her driving now she can go solo and I can stay home
Cost of fuel, tax and insurance, public transport is the cheaper option for sure

well this sure sounds like a no go if you ask me... the thing is with kids as small as your ben... they get to sleep with you beside them... so in their small heads they still think you are beside him when he wakes up in the middle of the night... he is frightened.... that is the main reason... kids in that age have essential angst...i am not kidding you... the book describes it as the hour of the wolf... still not joking... they want a secure sourounding and somehow they get frightened by too much input... so mainly you shut down the light suply in his room... sounds sinister but really improves his world for him... as he gets no data he cant somehow seperate dream from waking and then gets on sleeping... in the first few weeks you also have to add your soothing voice with calming sentences...one phrase of words that he can then use to keep him calm... a sentence you can suher for hours if needed... this WILL soooth him.... believe me... my sons oskar came awake almost all hozurs in the night... at first we thought he was hungry... so my wife breast feeded him to the point of total exhaustion of her AND him...then with the cure we trained him literally to sleep through the night! it was a blessing! he now is a fully developed boy aged three and is in the midsts of taking the world all by his will^^ he looks like a true british bulldog we say... red hair and puffy cheeks and a strong will you could bend steel with... no longer does he have troubled nights and he gets to sleep easyly...also what this cure improoves greatly is the appetite of the kids...when sleeping properly, the next day they eat like lions.... and then when they eat goot (whats the night meal called again?) they get full to sleep and sleep like angels...it is sounding like a miracle but it is in the beginning hard work for you but it pays off a heavy dividend for you and your wife...because lets face it sleepdeprivation is one of the oldest known tortureing methodes in the world...

That may work, he tends to go to sleep listening to a cd he has listened to since birth almost, so I tend to find if he gets really upset i play it to him while i soothe him, and also a drop of water incase he is dry.

We actually leave him with a little light as we think the darkness scares him.

We also tried ignoring him, but he just gets too worked up, we do not let him sleep in with us as he gets hyper if we do that, he has slept in his own room for almost a year now, and its only recently that it has started happening.

Maybe leaving his cd on loopmight work, but reduce the volume over time until he stops becomingdependent on it.

Anyways bed time for me, soccer shows have finished.

i think if the artificial soothing works then use it but i think he would prefer a more personal aproach any tie as your voice is much better for that... the light is what makes him rise up to fully waky ... total darkness helps him much better as all the stuff we do to make him feel better we really do because uf us...

will flesh this up in the night...

Awesome work on the painting and the conversions. The last time I played against a painted Space Wolves army was 1996. Mostly nowadays people collect a grey plastic legion, get a few character models and swap between Blood Angels and Space Wolves based on who has the niftiest new net-list. And they act like they resent me for having a fully painted Ork army.

Ah, no I could never resent anyone for having a fully painted army, especially a horde army like Orks.

Jealous maybe, resentful, never

And thanks for liking my work, now to actually lay some paint down. I really like the BA aesthetic, but I am Space Wolves through and through, whatever the codex.

Thanks guys, Ebay is my new best friend. I managed to acquire 9 thunderwolves 20 wolves and Harald Deathwolf fr less than half price. and yes they do well in the new ruleset. They still die n droves, but they are fun and the points drop for frost axes is cool (down to 10 points)

Got my butt into painting mode, playing with yellows.

I still need to ighlight the yellows up, finish off the gold and do a bit of tidying up work.

Out of curiosity, the thingy down his front and also his right shoulder pad, any ideas? Especially the front I want to put honour markings and stuff there.... my idea for him is as a venerable captain or an ancient, so he is a veteran of a thousand wars. I have considered giving him another right hand so he could be a true "ancent" as in a chapter banner bearer.

So any ideas, or critiques? All welcome.

Blooming heck its amazing how much bigger pictures show up all the imperfections that your eyes don't catch.

I have another boarding marine, which I am selling along with Shadow Captain Korvaine, Grand Inquisitor Luthor Rex and Lufgt Huron and the 25th anniversary model.

What is it with me and going long periods of time between posting on my own blog?

Well a lot has happened over the past nearly 18 months... new jobs, deaths, surgeries, anniversaries.... Basically life and trying to keep myself motivated.

I haven't been completely lazy though, I have put together a Grey Knight army which I am about 70% done with painting... and I have been adding to my Space Wolves too.

A new Land Raider, a limited edition GW Wolf Priest, some more troops, another 9 Thunder Wolves to give me 3 x 5 man(wolf) units A lord and Canis.

I have also been falling in love with Forge World even though I cant afford it, so thank God for the Dakka swap shop. I have just recently acquired, 3 Cataphractii terminator squads, 1 Tartaros terminator squad and a Justerin terminator squad.... With a Cataphractii Legion Praetor on the way.

I am thinking of going old school grey and see what happens, the idea is that they are the Wolf Lords elite and wear the traditional colours of their antique plate to reflect their status.

I have strted on this batch of 5 to see how they would look in the old school colours, and they look "okay" not sure about the pads. Originally looked at yellow for Wolf Guard pack markings, and the other black to put Great Wolf markings in, but then it was too close for me to the Iron Warriors colour scheme. Still now not sure with yellow and grey, so I might go with 1 black and 1 grey.
Also any ideas on how to make them more "wolfy" without overdoing it and taking away from the really nice models?

The Tartaros need some cleaning up of mold lines etc, but should look good when done, again any ideas on wolfing them up without making them look stupid?

They got here Justaerin time haha Going to file off the eye of Horus symbols and file down the spikes to make them look more like heresy era studded plates. Btw can Wolf Guard terminators carry multimelta's or should I cout off the end, magnetise and make it usable as multiple types of weapons?

The Cataphractii, I have enough arms to make another 2 with twin wolf claws, maybe marry them up with the guys above and run a squad with 4 wolf claws in it and a heavy flamer, any thoughts?

Hammer time! need to sort out the mix of storm bolters... maybe just give them storm shields....hmmm will need to trade for those. I have 3 or 4 plasma blasters (twin linked plasma guns) to trade if anyone is interested.

You may have noticed a lot of missing bits, but here they are!!!

Is it a bit perverse of me to take pleasure in turning these fledgling Death Wing models and converting them to the way of the Wolf??
Thanks for reading

Any thoughts, hints and tips welcome

Welcome back Danny-boy! You're right about FW... fantastic looking stuff but very pricy. I like the job you've done with the old-school paint job.

Unfortunately I'm not an expert on space wolves so I can't really help you with your questions. Just some general advice... rule of cool & go with your gut.

Cheers Gits, have I missed much?
I have had a look through your threads and you have been a very busy boy!
How are things?
Yup will go with rule of cool, at the moment they are all in the deep freeze, to make it easier to break them apart.
Thanks for the compliment on the paint job.

My goal is 1 unit per month, as I am offshore I can paint 2 hours a night over 14 nights should give me a pretty solid start.

Since my last post, the Justaerin, Cataphractii & Tartaros twrminators have been sitting in the bottom of the freezer. Just chilling out, freezing them makes the superglue really brittle and the process of dismantling them easier.
It also makes the resin a little brittle too. I managed to completely dismantle most of them incident free, although I did break 2 shoulder pads.
I'll put pictures up in a few days if I can get them from my phone to the tablet, then to my hard drive and then on to the laptop hahaha...
I am still not sure of the colours so I will put up some pictures too of progress with some of what I have been working on and hopefully you guys can give me some feed back..

IF I can get the pictures to work... Fingers crossed

Cool. Hi Pedro, thanks I look forward to seeing how your guys turn out.

In other news, my Legion Praetor showed up this morning, both really happy and sad at the same time.

Its a cool model,

But the legion sword is a hot mess, the edges of the sword are all chipped, there are holes right through near the middle of the blade and the blade is just flat near the edge to the point I cant tell where the flash ends and the sword begins :(
I was hoping to use the sword for another model, but I am worried it will end up as junk.

The rims of the shoulderpads are nowhere near as crisp as the pictures on the website. A lot of the detailing is not as it should be either.

The pads I can get away with, as I will sculpt a wolf cloak over the top and I can over lap it onto the shoulders.

The chest detailing is really shallow, the wings are almost not there and the torso "rim" is a mess. No flat banding with studs, it is almost like it is inverted. or just not there.

And the knee pads are so thin there is daylight coming through the grille like areas.... I am not a happy frikkin' bunny!

It'll take some serious reworking... I wonder if I can contact Forgeworld and show them the pictures, see if I can get a new one.

Is that a bit cheeky considering I bought it second hand here on Dakka?

I will show pictures later

The only really good parts are the head and the Volkite pistol, they look great, unfortunately I have no plans to use them :(

I will stick them up on my trade post, but if you know of anyone who might be interested in buying or trading for them please let me know

Hi Graven, how are things? I am really enjoying seeing your Dark Avenger coming to fruition.
I may take you up on the offer of bits and gubbins... I have a wish list as long as your arm hahaha...
And the same for you too, if ever on the hunt let me know.
Although its mainly SW and GK stuff that I have

Topping out my wish list is Asterian Moloc, but I cant justify £30 for 2 models when I only want the one, so unless I had a buyer in place for Ivanus Enkoi, I will continue scouring ebay and dakka trades.
Unless anyone out there wants to buy only Ivanus Enkomi the Minotaur chaplain!!! Get in touch, we can work out a deal.
I also need some Wolf Guard terminator storm shields, because I think the cataphracts will look brutal with the HH thunder hammers and these shields.... however round shields might be cool, which will require 25mm bases...... Gah coffee overload again!!!
And a big twin bladed axe, as I am thinking of converting the Praetor into Logan Grimnar, but not sure if the twisted torso will look a bit awkward and I'll need an axe har har har!! And someone to teach me how to sculpt pleated hair for beards etc.
And does anyone know where I can lay my hands on some microbeads???

Thanks mate! It's a lot of fun, in a masochistic kinda way I'll hunt you out an axe. Tube tool's a good way of making pleats (you use it at 45 degrees). What are microbeads?

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2014/01/30 17:31:03

Post by: dantay_xv

Microbeads or glass microbeads.

I first saw them when this guy beamo used them in a tutorial, and I think also on his Space Wolves dreadnought (which is beyond cool, you should check it out)

He used them in this tutorial http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/259197.page#1015669

I am going to use them on the Praetor to make studs on the areas I plan to fill in with liquid greenstuff.

Thanks for the axe too

Where did you get the tool you mentioned for making (manly) pleats?

Hey guys, well another week has passed and some more bits and pieces in the pipeline.
I promised pictures a wee while ago and now I hope to oblige.

remember the 4 squads of Heresy era terminators, well here they are. I managed to dismantle them mostly without damaging them and now they are in baggies, getting ready for the big dip. Most have paint on them and I am keen to strip them down and start again

This is the Legion Praetor which I plan to convert up to a Wolf Lord or maybe even the Great Wolf

You can see how wibbly the sword is.. I have plans for that!! Beside him you can see my bag of microbeads, which will hopefully make some good studs/ rivets in the amour. These are the beads in question 0.7mm each... Scary small

I got a bit bid happy on ebay.... The wife hasn't found out yet and 1 of the things I came away with was this squad of wulfen with a beat up Ulrik and a wolf guard with multi melta... Ulrik may be trading identities and becoming a Lone Wolf with a inmygravenimage custom axe

Also from inmygravenimage came a few more things: a bag of goodies

A drop pod

And a couple of Land Raiders, which I will patch up... Flamer may become my most ambitious project to date But what should it become

Lastly in my ebay frenzy I got a pair of models... of which I have been wanting 1 of the 2 for ages.... The one I want and will keep is.....

ASTERION MOLOC!! Big conversion plans for him, almost a shame I may not be able to save that Spartan style helm... And the other is Ivanus Enkomi. He is such a nice model but I do not think I can get him to suit my SW's, his helmet is super wicked awesome and would look perfect in the legion of the damned.
If you know anyone who wants to buy him, point them in my direction £10 plus postage

I have 2 more things coming tomorrow I cant wait As that will be me done for a few months atleast

Got busted last night by wifey!! She found my stash and I was betrayed by the bank account transactions :p

She has decided that I have an uncontrollable model addiction and I should lay off the purchasing of plastic crack for a few months....

I actually told her I was going to put money back in to the accounts with what I sold, but she said she didn't care about that, so I promptly shut my mouth (unusual for me) incase she remembered what I had just said and agreed wholeheartedly and wouldn't buy anything for a few months

The weird thing is I told her what I was buying and I had already decided no to buy for a while so I could work through what I now have and now get to keep any pennies I make through selling models & books ... So in a weird way its a win-win for me, just by letting her think she is right

I have been doing a wee bit of painting tonight, killing time on the rig.
And I need some advice on my models, I may go back and do the gold as I am not 100% happy with it, but please give me some CC.
As you know I am doing these in the old school colours and will use them as Grimnars elite Wolf Guard, here are some pictures and lets see what you make of them

Group shot, as you can see they are in varying stages of construction, they may also not end up being in the same pack, the Heavy flamer needs finishing up, he will get a power maul

I havent worked on the gold or steel for this guy yet, infact he is still pretty much just base colours. What do you think of the shoulder guards, should they both be grey? Or does it make him too monochrome?

Done some work on the gold and steel, looking okay I guess, loooks awful if I really enlarge the image Initially it was going to be grey to the left shoulder and then yellow and black pack marking on the right. I am not too sure? My concern is I will stray into the realm of the Iron Warriors. What do you think?

The steel needs some smoothing out on this guy, again what about the shoulders, black for the great wolf mark and yellow for the pack, same concern as before, but I do not want it to be boring, ideas please? Also how do the claws look??

Dont worry he's armless Is mixing the steel and gold looking okay? Also, I have a feeling they look a bit generic, but the armour doesnt leave much room for freehand, I have considered turning the leather bits to fur..... not sure exactly whats needed to make them stand out.

Here's your cahnce to have your say and help nudge me a long a bit Any hints tips, criticism or praise gladly accepted

Thanks for looking

I love the claws, which blue did you use? I have been wondering how to get a similar effect. I think the first model needs at least one yellow pad as the two grey is a little bland like you say.

Like the leather but they seem to be missing the essentially wolfy pelts, especially for wolf guard.

Best I can do on phone at 3am will have look on laptop tomorrow. Really like the grey, I was torn between blue and green for mine.

Hi WolfSmerf, thanks for your ideas, yes I am thinking double grey might be bit dull too.

The claws were different shades of blue, first coat was enchanted blue I think, with anAsurmen blue wash, then heavy drybrush of enchanted blue again. Next was a drybrush of hawk turquoise leavng it a little streaked to see the drker blue below, Next a light drybrush of ice blue near the edges and finally a very light drybrush of mithril silver to get the sparkles Nice and icy shiny

Thanks Gitsplitta! Any tips or ideas though, which do you prefer?

Also I forgot the heavy flamer guy, need to finish his nozzles.

Thanks Gits... I will hopefully do some more work on them this coming week or so.

Anyways, I mentioned before about doing some Grey Knights, well here they are... A bit battered and bruised but on the whole they are okay.

No dreadnought, dreadknight or vehicles as I couldnt geet them on the helicopter... Yup I ride a helicopter to work, how cool is that!!

Anyhoo, here are the pics

These guys are going to need knightly names so feel free to pitch in

This is my HQ choice, I can eitheruse him as a lord or a librarian..It is based on Inquisitor Hector Rex from Forgeworld, I did away with the shield as Grey Knights cant have them and changed the blade which is also elongated.... It is such a nice model I have considered giving him a Nemesis Daemon Hammer and making him Mordrak... We shall see. The shielad and some more gubbins will be winging their way on to inmy gravenimage as I owe him for some lovely bits he sent me.

Next up is Crowe, who is a nice model and will make my purifiers a troops choice and purifiers can be oh so nasty bwah hahaha!

These are the Purifiers, my favourites are the falchion wielding twins either side of the Justicar and my absolute favourite is the Falchion dude in the centre, he just oozes maenace with his crossed swords.

Next is my strike squad, who are a scoring unit and can be combat squadded, so as you can see I have set them up as an attacking aggressive half and a more defensive half with the psilencers, whom I would use as objective holders

I apologise for the poor quality images, hopefully I can remedy that when I get home.. more pictures to come.

And back!!!

Hi Graven, yes it is a nice model, seriously nice, such a shame the pictures are too dark though!!

My Purgation squad or whatever they are called, great for chucking out lots of high strength shots and stay hidden too Sneaky Gitz

Next up is my terminator squad, a fairly mixed bag but fun nonetheless anotyher ace scoring unit, I have been tempted to get more.

And lastly, for now, the big cheeses themselves, my Paladins.

I have a bunch of interceptor backpacks kicking around, of which some will be winging their way to Graven to see if it can help him to revive his technologically advanced Mentor Legion army

Go on Graven, you know you want to

Any useful hints and tips for using these in open warfare would be gratefully received

Well, made a little progress tonight with my Wolves.

I really didnt like the yellow on the pads, it looked patchy and I rtied a gryphonne sepia wash and it made it 10 times worse, so I have redone them.
I tried to be a little more patient with them and I found out that Lahmian medium is my new best friend!! It makes such a difference and it really saved som paints I thought long dead
I havent applied a wash to the yellows or anything I plan to get some yellow glaze and see how it goes.

I decided that gitsplitta & WolfSmerf are right and the black pad would also look best, so I had a go at that, and highlighted black through to dawnstone... Not sure if the pad looks too grey now, but i could knock it back with a little badab black and highlight the edge a bit.

I also edgehighlighted the plate below just to try and get it to stand out some more.

I tried to weather the heavy flamer nozzle too, and also paint up the face as I find it can bring a model more to life... still cant do eyes for toffee

Anyway here are some picture to show how I've been getting on

NOt too happy with the gold, so will likely do it again and see if Lahmian medium can work its magic again Otherwise not too bad, making steady progress.

The twins, the one on the left needs the gold and steel worked up from basic, he also needs his claws done, the other needs some tidying, but is okay... I reckon he still needs a little tidying and maybe a new thumb

This picture came out really dark, put some purple and black to the noozzle tips, might give it a dab of grey to look like sooty deposits... then do the eyes and helm decoration, might work on the gold again, we'll see how I am feeling

Group shots, you an see what needs working on.

Thanks for looking and any C&C welcome

Cheers

Those termies are looking good. I think the thing with the yellow pads on them, and I struggle with this on mine as well is that the yellow pad (shoulder or knee) is meant to be that particular WG's personal heraldry. It's a pain in the arse but totally worth it because the two colors unify them but having the different markings helps call them out as individuals even more.

Hi captain stabby Thanks, I like your suggestion about the shoulder or knee being for heraldry, it is something I have been thinking about. i am actually really freaked out by trying any freehand on my models as I am really bad at it. The closest I got to it was the shield on my dread on page 1 where I drew it on paper, painte id and then cut it out..
I would really love to be able to do some norse or celtic designs/ knotwork on them though. Does anybody know a god website for this where I could scale them down and maybe print them off on decal paper?

I could them use the knee for the pack markings, so they stay unified, but still carry some individuality? I can theen use the other knee for kill markings or awards, that kind of thing?

Also thank you gitsplitta It has been a long time since I blended. Usually its 2 similar colours layered then a wash to tidy up, but this time Ithought I would try something different. I went from Tausept Ochre (which had gone like peanut butter until the medium rescued it!!) through Iyanden Darksun and Golden yellow, with a dab of sunburst yellow at the edge. Lots of medium and thin coats was the key and I really like the effect. I couldnt do it on the greys as it would take me months to get 1 model done

Glad you liked them, hopefully more progress to come The models wont be finished because I left arms and heads at home I do have 1 question though. Should I chop heads in half and fit them like FW head or should I attempt to drill a cavity to fit a full head in?

If you are worried about complicated knotwork and such I would say take a look at the WG in the 2E Codex. They have some good examples of the personal heraldry. Pretty simple geometric patterns, that's where I draw most of my inspiration from.

Actually I think this is the image from the 'dex.

Ah thanks, now I get you.... Those are the pack markings usually worn by every member of a squad, same as for blood claws, grey hunters etc... but I do see how you could use it individually as personal heraldry.

I have the codices from 2nd/3rd 3dition to current at home, so I will have a flick through when I get back.

Have you seen the lone wolves comic strip? Some good pack markings and tattoo ideas in there too.

Yeah, loved Lone Wolves. I want that diorma soooo badly its near impossible to track down nowadays though, something I kick myself for not picking up when I had the chance. I have the hardback of the comic somewhere, need to get it signed by Abnett if hes at the San Diego comic con this yr.

I think the "pack" markings that are shown are meant to be used as either pack or personal heraldry at least at one point. The 2E dex talks about how upon beiing elevated to the Wolf Guard they get to wear their own stuff. Personally for me I dont separate my WG into packs per se, my thinking being they are all more or less attached to the Wolf Lord and wear his heraldry somewhere (company mark) then their own somewhere else.

Ok, yeah, just grabbed the 2E dex, so... according to the way back machine. PA WG all replace their old pack markings with the black and yellow personal marking of their Wolf Lord on the right shoulder, company goes on the left, for Termies, the company mark goes on the right shoulder and the "pack" (since technically all WG are one pack I guess) goes elsewhere. Maybe the blurb I'm thinking of is somewhere else. Anyhow, yeah. lines and stuff!!

It sucks freehanding the Blooded Hunter mark for Bran's company :(

Looking very good indeed. Damn cool minis as for knotwork / runes, look at gripping beast's site - lots of ideas on the SAGA forums. An easy way, though, would be to use a micron pen (hobbycraft or other good crafty shop) for runes, either outlined, or paint over, or indeed leave as is - if you got the coloured set (Amazon probably, or a really good art store), you could use the Brown and Black pens, drawing a rune and then shadowing it subtly.
I'll do a test one on a spare pad if that doesn't make sense...

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2014/02/22 08:53:12

Post by: dantay_xv

If you look on page 1 the wolf lord in the far right picture is from the lone wolves diorama, I just took his hand off and gave him a plasma pistol.... The Rune Priest has his hand holding the gaunts head
The other Space wolf is amongst my grey hunters or wolfguard unconverted and need to locate the really cool base.
I did that years ago, not really considering how rare the piece was... In hindsight I think I'd have left it alone, or bought 2 of them
I also have the hardback graphic novel, with the bit in the back showing how they made the final episode which is really cool as it shows the rough sketches and the decisions behind some of the layouts.
I havent tried freehanding BranRedmaws great company marking... I bought the FW decal sheet which is where the markings for my terminators came from. Its pretty good as it gives you enough for 1 squad of troops and 1 squad of terminators for each great company plus vehicle markings etc.
I an scan a copy to you if you like. I intend to use the whole sheet barring maybe the vehicle stuff.

Yeah I saw that guy that you did the hand swap on. I'm jealous.

Ah nah thats cool no need to scan it, cheers though! Now that I see it has Redmaws stuff on there I might pick it up for the vehicle transfers myself. I have a half baked plan for my PA wolves to acquire... 80 or so of the shoulderpad with that wolfhead on it and smooth out the pack marking lines on the field and use those. Either that or just paint over the grooves, depending on which version of the shouldepad they are different depths, so, yeah I might be insane. :/

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2014/02/22 09:29:44

Post by: dantay_xv

I would say ambitious, not insane

If you are talking about the metal pads I do have some of those most used I doubt I have any spares... They are kinda small compared to the plastics, so you would need to build up the rim on them I think. Also the metal one the triangular design is raised and then the wolfshead raised again, so it would take a lot of filing or green stuffing to get that smoothed out.

The plastics are much better as the triangular design is just a line cut into the armour with a raised wolfshead, nothing some liquid green stuff couldnt sort out, the only issye is you get so few in a box set, so you would be a bits suppliers dream customer (or worst nigtmare) wanting to order so many of them.

Still it would be possibly be cheaper than 8 sheets of FW decals

I saw some of winterdynes amazing commission work in the showcase section.

And he had a suggestion for looking at google for celtic and norse images so I did and I quite like some of the norse runic stuff.

I plan on making my own storm shields for my terminators, round like you see in traditional viking imagery and thought some of these might be do-able.

I still plan on celtic knotwork for the tanks andsuch like, but would something like these be good runes of warding?

Not too much of an update on the models... been getting called to work during the night a bit, so I am really tired at the end of a shift and de-motivated.. So as much as I love dakk, its time to sleep.
Hopefully tomorrow with fresh eyes I can finish these off..
Got the golds and metals done on the second Wolf Claw, and re did the gold and metals on flamer wolf, did the combi-melta for gunney wolf, and did some little bits of tidying up.
I also did the lenses on flamer wolf, butt thee green looks so dark in there its really hard to see.
I hope you like them.

First Claw wolf, tidied up, might do the steel on the legs again. he has the darker brassier gold. Need to do more with the claws to make them pop.

Second claw wolf with a lighter more yellow gold?
Which looks better?

F;amer wolf with lighter gold, damn I missed that patch of yellow on the steel.. More tidying to do :(

Gunney got his gun, how do I make the purply blue sheen stand out?

Almost there!! Thanks for looking and any hints and tips to better my painting are gratefully received

Cheers.

I think gloss varnish is needed to fill the lip between the transfer and the model. You can flat coat over that if you want later on.

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2014/02/27 15:50:53

Post by: inmygravenimage

Yeah, sorry, gloss. Might have a spare bottle, I'll have a hunt. I really like vj paints; they're generally a bit thinner, which is not a bad thing. The range is huge, too (I have 11 greys iirc). Dropper bottles mean less waste, too. Having said that, I prefer gw's inks etc for just that reason - I'd rather use my washes from a pot, as they simply come out too fast from a dropper. I like gw's technical paints, too, vj crackle medium has never worked for me :-/

Space Wolves come back in from the cold, Thunderwolves done & a Fire Raptor inbound! @ 2014/02/27 17:33:34

Post by: dantay_xv

Ah right, cool.

Oh meant to ask, graven how did you go using the micron on the shoulderpad?

So gloss varnish to conceal the transfer then, matte varnish to seal the model ovverall. Thanks for that tip gits & graven

I have some gw gloss varnish here that I put on lenses, so I can give it a go.

I'll certainly look into the vallejo's some more... A lot of older paints are starting to die and somehow Lahmian medium will not bring them all back. Although tausept ochre was more like peanutbutter and it came back from the Dead. I was looking at Vallejo game colour, it looks pretty good for matches to GW.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh almost forgot, does the mattte varnish dull the finish or hide the highlights at all? I never seal my models, so just curioous if I would have to make tha colours slightly brighter to compensate

A question for folks out there, I am slowly getting some paint down on my models and I am having a bit of a conundrum.

Do I retin the helmets on my models, go for a mix or go helmetless like the vast majority of my other Space Wolves?

Either way is easy for the convertedJustaerin as they have full heads and cavities

The guy I bought these from als pinned the plumes on top, so maybe I could swap them out for wolf tails???

But Tartoros and cataphractii have only half helms and flat slide in sections for them to slide into the bodies. This will involve cutting and a bit of grinding to make it big enough for a full head, or just chop heads in half

I am swithering a wee bit...

Lastly if I keep the helms, go all grey or do something like the black & red?

Mine will have green eye lenses though

Decisions... Decisions, let me know your thoughts

I think if you were going to add color to the helms, yellow or black and yellow would be better.

Lighting isnt great for pictures in the office so I apologise if these are a touch dark.

I have been getting a little work done on my Space Wolves, or as GW will probably rename them, Lupus Astra...

Got the greys down and washed with babdab black on all 18 extra guys

I will not show you them all as it would be very very boring, but now I have highlighted up.... I tried some zenithal drybrushing???? Basically turning the model at an angle wit each layer so only the upper areas, or the most prominent parts got more of a highlight... thepics ,ake it look really chalky, but in real lfe it wasnt too bad... took 2.5 hours to do all 18 which is warp speed for me and now they lok like this.

We are coming for you!!!!

They went on to bases after drybrushing was done, because:
A It makes a stadier platform for painting &
2 I wont keep handling the models and risk smearing/rubbing the paint.

Btw this music is helping keep me motivated : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XJ07onCqAs & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA2Rj7GEXhw, if neither of these gets your head bobbing, then it is a very sad day!!

And not quite model related, but my desktop when I am working away

picture removed by mods for not being model related

Makes me smile when I see the wee one, crazy climber!!

Anyways folks, keep on truckin'

@ Vik, wasnt quite going for the thriller look, but hey if it works lol!! They will hopefully look a bit better when they get some more paint spattered on them. However the headless, handless theme will continue, as I forgot all the bits.
But do not fear, someday they will be whole again, plus I am trying to bypass the wife and order a few bits from some bits sites to jazz them up.

Anyone know sme decent bits sites which do dwarf stuff??

@ Graven & Gits cheers, glad you like the new avatar... saw it when looking at a thread of funny images for 40K and thought, yup thats for me... It was either this or Buzz Lightyear Space Marine as my coffee itake has shot up by about 1000%

Hopefully more pics soon, the painting is proving to be a nice distraction

Do I stick with tradition and go with a black right shoulderpad bearing the Great Wolf's marking and trick out the fisyt in yellows and black for pack markings and te like or do I break the mould and go with a yellow pack marking on the right pad, and do the fist up in black with the Great wolfs marking.

UPDATE!!

Got the golds on the 1st squad done, run out of badab black, so all silvers are on hold, when I am done with black paint, I will dilute it down and make it a wash.

In the left corner weighing in at 2 tartoros terminator suits are the BLACK PADS!!! & in the right corner also weighing in a t 2 tartoros suits are the YELLOW PADS!!!

In the middle is sgt Grey

Let me know which will look best please?

Oh if you are wondering why my models are a bit well, bitty just now, I plan to do te heads sepaprately, but when I soaked thm in fairy power spray the chainblades fell off of them and vanished into the warp, so when I am home, BIG chain blades on the fist. They will also get Storm shields, which I am devising a method of concocting, so they will not get finished per se before I go home, but they wioll be finished insofar as I can paint them.

If anyone wants to buy some forgeworld tartaros strombolters please let me know

Anyway picture.

Update again!!

Done these about as far as I can for now.
Spent ages on the black and the yellow, I am pretty happy with both, but I wonder if I made my paint was too thin on the yellow as it is hard to see the gradient change in the light. And the highlighting isnt showing up too well either.
The crux terminatus needs some more work and I hope that th fingers look electrically charged.
Next step for these is when I get home is to raid the bitz box for right hands and manufacture some shields.. Then get some chain blades for the fists. But for now they are done...

Next up is these guys:

Hi Graven, thanks... I'll try the silver.
I did do the gold highlighted up to silver 2 nights ago, but made the mistake of putting a gloss varnish on it.

I re-did it last night and it looks akoy, but the tips look "soft"

I'll give the silver a go, if that doesn't work go for weathering and if that still doesn't work, then knife and file will come out and take the paint off

Do you think the blue shading is better than the black?

Not much of an upate...

After a really busy day... I havent done much of anything model-wise.
I got the shoulderpads on my PIP terminators and got the base colours down & washed.
Tomorrow night I WILLl get them done. If it kills me.

So Group shot!

Front row... Nearly there, need to do yellows, blacks and golds. Put some mithril silver on the autocannon tips as Graven suggested.
Need to make shields and GS some wolf cloaks and doodah's. Oh and swap axe heads for dwarven great axe heads
Second row.. find some right hands from my GK sets and make some shields, add some suitable chainblades to the fists and gs some wolf pelts... Manufacture a cyclone too. Wow not nearly as finished as I thought!!
3rd row. Shields, cloaks.. You know the drill!
4th row. Swap 3 hammer heads for Dwarf great hammer heads, more right hands, shields, ds wolfy bits and make another cyclone...

All of them... Basing ideas, the grey is far too Bland... Hints and tips please

This has been by far my most fun project and the free time at work has really helped push me on, I've tried new techniques and I honestly think these are some of the best painted odels I have done so far!!

Oh and thanks for sticking with this P&M blog and me, I know it has gone in fits and starts, but hopefully I can get some consistency going!! And keep enjoying myself

The modelling mojo, is coming in fits and spurts, so making the most of it when I can.

My nun had surgery a few weeks ago for skin cancer, she had a lump the size of a tennis ball removed and it has left her with difficulties walking.
It was about her 6th surgery in the past few years, but this is by far the biggest removed and also it has travelled within her body. She is being amazingly positive and she has a great oncologist and consultant who are doing everything to get her up and running again.

Before she left hospital she found another small lump and again it is cancerous, so next week she wil have more surgery. She will not be having chemotherapy and will be going straight to medicines designed to kill off cancer which will be 3 injections over 6 months.

Anyway staying positive and trying to keep myself occupied.

Picture 1, shield prototype.

Opinions please? Are the colours and design okay? Each shield will be unique, however I want to tie them together by using the same or similar colours, suchas the yellow and black. I had considered red for the knotwork, but it would be too dark. Please I would enjoy some C & C.

OPinions please? Is it too big, does it look okay, the shield will also be about double this thickness also.

Besides this, I have been working on a few other models. On the left is Bran Redmaw, centre is my possible Logan Grimnar model. Still need s some work done on the ace, armour wolf cloak etc, but a start, on the right is a Sevrin Loth conversion to a rune priest, still needs a wee something

Lastly is my Wolf Guard battle leader, inspired by the picture from IA11. The plan with Minotaur symbols is to use them as a map to sculpt a wolfs head. I will remove the horns. It is such a nicely posed model. I am almost tempted to Change the weapons over and make him Logan Grimnar instead. Again a fair amount needs doing on him.

Not sur if I should keep the shield, or go for a round one like the others, any thoughts?

Really not sure, so any advice would be a help.

Wow, really good looking force. I saw the pics of the red faces vs grey faces for the Terminators. We call them Tiger helms but couldn't they be painted in Wolf fur colors? Just my 2 cents .

You got the right idea Dantay. Stay positive *for her* as much as for your own sanity. Keep yourself occupied as much as you can so you don't just sit around and dwell on it... that won't help either of you either.

I think the shield looks fantastic. It's more realistically sized than most GW shields & the pattern looks fantastic!

My recommendation... if you're really going with the Norse theme... is to go with a traditional round shield. Carried out consistently throughout the army, I think it would be a great look!

Hi Brother Paen. I am glad that you like them.

When you suggest wolf fur colours, are you meaning browns and blacks, or keep the red face shield and go for wolf fur colours like brown for the rest of the helm?

And thank you Gitsplitta, I am glad you like the shield and design, I will move on to version 1.1 next with a slightly thinner steel rim and I think you are right about making the shields consistent.

I think I will stick to the norse theme, I just feel its more appropriate than crazy viking in space.

Yep being positive helps, Mum and dad have been taking a few road trips with the caravan at weekends, and before going offshore having them over for chats and do the cooking to give them a bit of a break. They are considering selling off one of the cars and the caravan and getting a camper-van to go out on more trips.

She is now seeing if she can retire from work on a full pension, but if might be difficult with the restrictions in place at her work. Especially if they sack her, which they can do if she is off too long sick under 'incompetence'.

Oh and well done on the Godzilla movies!! I haven't really seen many, but I remember ejoying the cartoons as a kid, with Godzooky

Round shields all the way. I like the design and the poses. Glad your mum's on the mend too, squire.

Thanks Graven, so round shields all the way.

Anyone need Asterion Moloc's shield?

I can supply it with a stock Tartaros arm but no pad and Moloc's right arm. I also have Moloc's cresty thing too.

SHIELD WALL!!! These are shield prototype version 1.1.
What do you think?
I got curious about the raven and t wanted to see which colour knotwork would work best
The other is a wolf.

Raven in Fenris grey and SW grey

Raven in gold, a bit too close to the yellow maybe?

Raven in red. Was a bugger because the shades of red made it hard to see where the knots crossed over.

So what do you think?? Which is your favourite?

Lastly the wolf in shadow and SW grey. Do you like??

C&C welcome... Is here anything which could do with changing.

And Graven, we'll see

A wee bit more work done tonight.

Going with grey as the accent colour for the shields

Feedback please.

Group shot.

About the most complex design so far

One of my favourites so far.

Cross needs some tidying up, but almost there.

Any tips, ideas, critiques welcome

Really nice, very pretty indeed. I know this is probably a later stage thing, but a wee wash of (say) ogryn flesh would probably bring it all together.

No worries, I can certainly give it a try and see what happens.

I have a wee drop of gryphonne sepia left, that might be better as its not so dark.

I had originally done yellow, sepia wash then yellow again, but maybe it could do with another wash to bring te highlights in.

Should I go over the grey & black as well?

Okay, so taken a night off from the painting. I have been looking at making a Logan Grimnar from scratch... I just don't like the current model, so this is what I have come up with:

It does need a lot of work, some GS filling andpointy hand as if calling someone out and some extra wolfy bits. The axe needs cleaning up and wolf heads added to them to make it the axe Morkai.
So a lot of work.

However I also have most of Asterion Moloc too which I was going to include as Bran Re,aws second in command and I tried the bits out on him..... And I really like it!

The bulls head will make a skin for shaping a wolfs head after trimming off the horns and the armour really looks ornate and gives him bulk.
What do you think?

This would be Redmaw's lieutenant if I don't do a body swap:

And after body swap

Opinions please?

I like Preator Grimnar more then Maloc Grimnar. The whole angle of the pose just works better for me.

Hey gits, glad you like them and yes Moloc Grimnar is doing a wee bit of posing isn't he??

Hi Whalemusic, thanks for looking in, yes I like the Praetor Grimnar... the Forge World models are both great to work from... There is something a bit more imperious about the Praetor isn't there, whereas Moloc Grimnar has more of a stalking look.

Cool, I never knew that I had lurkers I am glad that you posted Whalemusic and sorry I took a wee while to reply, sleep overtook me

And thank you Knightley, although I didn't have too much to do with the poses of te Grimnar's, except Praetor Grimnar just raise te axe arm by 90 degrees, The FW is just so nice. It was a shame Moloc's head was sculpted on as I would have loved to salvage the Spartan helm, but hey ho.

I have never tried gs-ing hands. I have a bunch of GK sprues at home, so I am hoping to go through them and find a pointy hand, if not cut into a fist ed hand and make a sausage finger for him lol

In other news, the shield designs that I have used so far have come from some of my close friends here on Dakka, so I could give them a mini, which would be considered 'them'.... I would now like to open tat offer up to all my friends and lurkers who come by this site and frequent my blog here. So if you would like a shield design of your own to feature on a terminator Pm me. The only stipulation is that I don't breach any copyright images and it has a Norse/ celtic theme... ( you know, like celtic kotwork etc...) I have found google and Bing searches quite good for ideas, but I want to open it up to everyone. And if you feel so enthused even shoose a erminator too, All except Grimnar will be getting one, those with gun and weapon will have tem strapped to their backs once I have GS-ed theirwolfy doo-dahs to them

I look forward to your suggestions

I don't think so:

I need a few cyclones to finish off but otherwise I think that I am good.

At home I have another 5 or 6 squads of terminators, so I am pretty well covered.

Are there any bits you are looking for?

I'm also a terminatoraholic, though of the deathwing variety. Not counting GK termis, I'm around 90. You've got me beat on FW termis though, only 15 plus SCs.

Yep, my name's Dantay... And I am a termie-holic
I have between 60 & 65 SW termies and 10 GK terminators.

Its scary, but I would like at least 1 squad from each great company.

At least you have a legit excuse, the Death Wing is a company

Dakka was where I picked all these up from, so I owe the trade pages a big thank you for them, Moloc was ebay.

Couldn't sleep, up at 3am.

Did an hour in the gym and still not sleept, so got on with the brown leather strapping on the terminators.

Looks okay, but I wish I hadn't washed it with gryphonne sepia

Picture is a bit dark, so will try again later

Let me know what you think.

Oh... I asked before about shield designs. Here is a sample of some I found if it helps. I found a bunch more and will post those too later, but if anything takes your fancy please let me know.

Pick a shield? I think I missed something when browsing through your thread Rapid fire explanation? (or quote what you said about the shields)
