Good evening
I've been playing warhammer and 40k for quite some time now,
and finally got infested (like so many before me) by the illusion that I have to play some kind of space marines...
About the same time I downloaded an Inquisition compendium,
to look for a way to beat that insanly overpowerd army and found some fan made rules for the Deathwatch.
I was so amazed by artistic possibilities that army offered so that I decided to start one my own.
After reading through tons of Warhammer fluff, I finally planned out my army and began to model.
So, long story short, here it is, the WIP of my first Deathwatch Killteam.
The first two guys are allmost finished (might clean them up a bit if needed)
The Chaplain is nearlly done, needs one or two more steps of greenstuff and some cleaning
And the 4th guy with his heavy flamer, more an early wip, still undecided what details he's missing
Last but not least a really raelly early wip for the sargent
You may have noticed that they all wear the same shoulder pad.
It is still WIP and will be casted for all the models once it's finished.
The bases will be some mud covered battlefield where the IG stood it's ground (or not so much) against a tyranid infestation.
However I'm missing some vital ingredients for the mud atm.
So, I hope I can update that thread quite regularly^^
however don't get used to those nice fotos there, I won't set them up for ever little wip shot XD
oh, and just a little spoiler of what's to come in the future

It was about time you post this to the public buddy.
I did not know that you do your 40k stuff on this high level.
I hope to see you online soon to play that nice 40K with Andre and me.

Those shoulderpads are all individually hand done? Wow, crazy skill there man!
The sarge looks great. Your GS skills are truly impressive.
And if you want to play in regular 40K (tourneys, club gaming etc.), just using Sternguard and/or vets rules will be both great for DW and a decent match for Grey Knights.
Sure, the Knights are powerful. But ammo that pierces their armor outright (Sternguard's vengeance rounds) and plasma/melta weaponry will take them out really easily. I massacred two full armies of Grey Knights at a tourney last weekend by sticking to an attrition strategy, shooting them up as much as possible before engaging in close combat. They just don't have the numbers to weather a whole bunch of shooting. So Sternguard accompanied by some transport-killing units should do you pretty well.
27214
Post by: IPS
Everything hand made there.
Yup, had that in mind with the sternguard.^^
Well, problem with grey knights is that I play tau as my main army, and ap3 weapons are kinda rare for them... >.<
My ap2 are to expensive and my ap1 only kill 3 knights max a turn.
So it's allmost certain that they come close, and yea we all know what hapens to tau once you them in close combat XD
Space marines can cope with everything however, that's true.^^

Sometimes some homemade tools out of wire (for those really fine details or shapes that I can't sculpt with the others)

Pretty nice Green Stuff work, especially the feathers on the helmet. Looking forward to see more of it, perhaps the Land Speeder would benefit from some ornamentation.

Don't worry, there will be quite some ornaments on that landspeeder
+ some other conversions (like the co driver hitting someone with his chainsword ).

WOW.... spectacular job with the GS! I can barely make a passable ashtray out of play-doh nevermind intricate detailed work like yours! Mind putting up a tutorial for the butterfingers like me on here?
27214
Post by: IPS
Thanks^^
Yes, I will make some tutorials some day.
However since those are my first greenstuff experiments on such a detail level I'm still at the stage of learning myself and I discover new techniqus every day.
@Sageheart
The army is exactly 1000p large.
It will incloude two Tacticalsquads with 5 man, a Librarian as commander, two Landspeeder, a scout squadron + Landspeeder
and a Stormraven.
after those are done I might add a count as Terminator squad of heavy marine veterans with costummade weapons and armor.
And another 10 Tactical Marines.

Good work with the GS. As a long time DW fan I also enjoy the general idea to create a whole army.
I might have been rash, looking through the pics, but do you make implications to every marines original chapter? The guy with the winged helmet surely makes one think of DA.

Really liking this so far. New pics soon?
27214
Post by: IPS
new pics tm, when the milliput is dry
@Baiyuan
Yup, everey marine will have some implications of his chapter.
They will also reflect the chapters specifications and general attitute.
For example the Dark Angle is a squad srg because he comes from one of the most experienced and faithfull chapters out there.
The heavy flamer is carried by a Scythe of the Emperor because he's a master of that weapon due to the endless battles he fought against tyranids
and so on and so forth..

Update on this landspeeder (this guy will be a White Scar)
The mold for the Deathwatch upgrade parts (got to test this one)
Might make another one some time..
And last but not least a spoiler for another "marine".

but I just like the desgin to much to not put him into my army^^

Dude! This is kick ass! Although I feel there are pieces that the use of GW parts would have given a better, cleaner edge to...even though that sculpting is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my league and I cannot fault it (mainly from lack of knowlege and skill myself )! Things like the heavy flamer would have looked much better if you'd combined parts from the cadian heavy flamer for example.
Otherwise it is great! Love the idea...who are the chapters involved going to be?
27214
Post by: IPS
Yea I have to agree with you...
However many of those things only show up when I take the fotos, and by then it's to late to change it. >.<
That's probably the downside of useing a macrolens XD
Another point it the time available for the specific parts. Normally I model the general shape, then wait an hour and model the fine details.
After another 2 hours I model things like the sharp edges and really really insane details.
Sadly i don't allways have 3 or 4 hours available for modelling every day, so many things stay kinda unfinished. : /
About the flamer I kinda feel exactly the same... might remake that one some time (eighter with prebuild parts or some brownstuff)
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
The sergeant is terrific! I particularly like his pose, drawing his sword from the scabbard and all. Way to go!
Also I hope you'll excuse my french, but "cleaner edges" my ass. It's true there are some details that could have sharper edges, but overall the sculpting is top notch and will look perfect once painted, I'm sure bout that.

I am astounded by these I loved the Scythes shoulder pad especially they are one of my favourite chapters. Are you planning to make it a Kantor list. Sternguard as troops would make a perfect fit for Deathwatch. It also might be worth your while to get the Dark Heresy Deatwatch book. Also if this is your first try you could seriously consider going pro.
My only problem the Sergeant being a DA rather than a Rainbow Warrior. When I saw that totem.....
18424
Post by: Imperial Monkey
gah, such a waste of terminator parts, and them getting more expensive now....
Looks good, although you need to put some guts coming out from under the termie, right now he's just sawn off at the hip...
27214
Post by: IPS
Don't worry, there will be lots of greenstuff on both objectives
No, not really a waste of termi parts.
They are reused termies after all (the legs where really screwed up...)
But that prince increase is a real shame indeed... (in the sence of, games workshop should be ashamed to even think about increasing their prices even more >.< )
@Llamahead
Hm, na, I allready turned another hobby of mine into a job, will keep that one^^
Yea, I thought about making him a Rainbow Warrior, but the Dark Angle was more interesting...
The second Sergeant my be a Rainbow Warrior however.

Space Marine modelling is all nice and stuff, but since I also enjoy painting just as much, I continued my Tau army some time ago.
Have a look herer if you missed it:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/386215.page#3138259
Now that 80% of the army was done I kinda got the motivation to continue it and finish it to a status where I can officially call it done.
Note that this army is about 7-8 years old, it was the first army I've ever played.
Many models fell victim to conversion rages and other more or less stupid stuff I did across the years.
Still parts survived, and I'm really proud of those old models now.
(Even though some of them where painted 2-4 times now)
But what is left to do now?
Well, first of all I upgraded the painting of some of the one week models:
commander and the big boys
the suicide suits (tau players know why they look like that >.< )
MISSILES
and the other guys
hammerhead with markings
and the infantry with painted bases
To play decent battles you also need objective markes however.
3 should be a good number, so here they are, wip.
Earthcast member recovering some data from an attack drone
Pathfinder with important battle information
And the generic wounded VIP with emergency beacon
17244
Post by: The Good Green
Nice Tau. I like the battle damaged suicide suits. The objective markers are cool too. I can't wait to see all of the objective markers ( DW included) with their GS on.

Ook, won quite some battles with the tau force, had lots of fun and collected tons of bits in the meantime.
Adittionally I upgraded my tools and ordered some instant mold, so the duplication of the schoulder pads can begin soon!! HARRHARRHARR
In short, it's time to get back on the Death Watch.
So let's begin with a small update on the heavy weapons (I changed to a new system where magnets are added on the hand rather than on the weapon itself, it hepls a lot, really.)
And I spent quite some time planning an exact army list (for regular space marine codex 1000p.) and what marines it should contain.
So here's a little teaser of what's to come some day, hopefully soon.^^
oh I also finshed all the other marines for priming.
17244
Post by: The Good Green
Hey, glad to see you back on the board. It's been a little while. Good idea on the magnets. I'll bet there's a bit more room for them in the wrist. That last pic reminds me I need to get another one of those bitz organizers.
Nice teaser too. I'll looking forward to seeing moar!

ok a little update from the weekend
The Hammer of Dron with his heavy Bolter.

another little update
the next one for frieday is allready on the way^^
The Howling Griffon will be most likely the manliest marine of my killteam.
Also he's one of the taller guys, even fo a space marine.
Shield an sword are as allways magntised, so that I can use him for non HQ units as well.
(However bolter and chainsword are just not noble enough for his default pose...)
He's wearing a brand new IIX armor, and will get lots of ornaments and engraved honours on his armor.
Also quite a lot of parchments everywhere.
17244
Post by: The Good Green
Very nice! I love the "Pose a BA" gag. The Griffon marine's pose looks a little awkward to me, though it may just be the camera angle. Mostly it's his front leg.
Are you going to assemble all of them before doing any green stuff work or will you do a bit of one then a bit of the other? I'm really looking forward to all of it.

Yea I'm really looking foward to the angry marine as well, allready got quite a lot of ideas for him.
And another one!
A Minotaurus Marine. He might look a bit extrem right now
but if you know the fluff, those guys are extreme. >.<
So here he is, the High Lords personal thug.
@The Good Green:
I like to have at least 3 marines to work on with Greenstuff at once, so that you don't waste so much time and greenstuff.
However atm I just don't feel lik doing any Greenstuff work.
If it wouldn't rain all the time here I would start painting some of them next week, we'll see.

Well, looks like I've been beaten to the punchline about 3 times already. I love the majority of the conversions on him and especially the brass knuckles thing.
27214
Post by: IPS
Hehe^^
@Rawson:
That's kinda what I was going for.
I thought a marine as crazy as those Minotaurus guys woul probably
wear such a "trophy" just to tease other marines arround him.
Or to swing them in the face of the next alien, after he ripped out his guts and spread them all over the place.. >.<
But in the end you can't take that guy 100% seriously,
the main inspiration for them balls came for the video to the song "hold on" from korn.
In combination with some kroot bits it just couldn't resist to add them.
about the truescale
Thanks^^
That might be because I'm not necessarily going for the classic "true scale" marines, but more for individual proportions for each of my models that support their role and character.
For example that Minotaurus is more of a small and strong guy, which suits his thug image imo.
My Srg in contrast just got an enormous battlefield presence, he really dwarfs a standart IG soldier.
But that's not only because of longer limbs but more because of his general pose in combination with his base and the banner.
Hm, I totally forgot to upload a picture of his backside...
27214
Post by: IPS
A rather small update but still.
I just finished the most important model of my army, the one to test my color scheme and new painting techniques on!
Ingame it will be some kind of servitor, or marker for a model that needs a bolter somehow, or just an additional marine if I should ever need one.
7585
Post by: Shadow Nugz
I would modify the servitor to look like it holds some sort of human anatomy such as a case for a brain. Something to make it seem less Tau
17244
Post by: The Good Green
Very cool updates. The Minotaurus marine is pretty funny. That leg of his is crazy though. All the wires just curling around like that... that's gonna get GSed over, at least a bit, isn't it? Looks crazy right now though, very chaosy.
The drone is very cool. Can we get a 360 of it?
27214
Post by: IPS
Yes, there will be greenstuff.^^
The chaosy look however is intended, I mean those guys where to be outcasted several times, but the highlords of terra allways saved them somehow..
Anyways, here is your 360 of the drone.
Tried several paint techniques on there (that's why it's a bit messy now...)
but I think in the end I found some rather satisfying ways to paint my Deathwatch.
CC welcome!

Hm, I'm more or less just trying arround.
If I don't like somthing I just start again, and so on and so forth...
Ok, finshed the Ultramarine.
But I have to admit that it kinda showed me mostly what i still can't do...
Blending that white helmet was really a pain in the ass, has someone a good thechnique to thin paints so that they don't dry so damn fast when thin layerd???
Also will redo the mud sometime, somehow, I'm just not happy with it.
Shoulderpads will follow soon, the Instand Mold just arrived last weekend!
On a side note: damn those macro lenses are unforgiving... after I took the first 2 pictures I repainted the half model just because it just looked so crappy on the photo.. XD

Hey, a happy new year to all of you!
@Imperial Monkey
It is alive^^ and they eat a lot... ><
@Gitsplitta
Thank you very much : )
@Eeps
Thanks!
Now for something new.
There is lot's of stuf going on on my table right now^^
But since I don't want to assable the other marines just for a photo, you have to wait.
Anyway, Black Templar!
Still have to decide what head to give him...
Had a Space Wolf head with a beard on him, but that just was not grim enough.
So I think I'll go with some medieval cap.
Also, because I generally dislike those 0815 Space Marine heads, and 90% of Space Wolf heads have beards,
I decided that to model my own heads from now on.
So here it is, my second attempt on a head.^^
The first one looked ok, but kinda was put to shame by that one
Allready tweaked the ear a bit, so it does not look as crippled any more.
And just in case you need some size relation,
the giat pole he is mounted on is a 1mm wire and the base underneath is some cork...
cnc as allways welcome

That's a great head IPS... lantern jaw, Carl Maulden nose, prominent brow ridges... full of character!

Excellent sculpting! For a second attempt, I'd say you're in the 99th percentile, IPS!
I'm not sure what I think about his pack. Can we see some more pics?
Keep up the great work!

that head looks perfect! better than normal sm heads, im just curious how it is going to hold up next to a gw head and im not talking about quality, im talking about style wise.. but im just pickey about custome heads i use so it should matter that much

IPC, say, since you're more talented than me even with a toothpick when you sculpt. how about i send you a set of sculpting tools and we'll do a charity drive sculpt-a-thon?

@Gitsplitta
Hehe, glad it worked out^^
@Rawson
Yup, more pics here ; )
@Capitansolstice
Thanks!
@Rogue Wolves
Will post some more pics soon (when my new heads have dryed and lost the glossy look)
I can include a side by side comparison then^^
From what I can tell right now, you need some time to familiarize with the unusual look, but works fine on a SM body.
@xcasex
charity drive sculpt-a-thon? hmmmmm^^
how exactly should I imagine that? XD
But now.. Progress!
Yes, that Space Wolf is to cool to use his plasma gun... or is he just going for a silent kill?
The plas gun is magnetized so no I won't use it most of the times.
And a propper look on that packpack.
Again the special weapon is magnetized.

I was thinking we gather up the nordic's into one thread and have a theme sculpt, one base model each, conversions / custom sculpt, and then we paint 'em and sell 'em off via dakka and donate the proceeds to charity

That is amazing, your models are so full of character and the sculpting just blows me away. Could you maybe do a tutorial for sculpting the deathwatch pads ?

Post by: Perkustin
Some good work but they dont scream deathwatch to me. Deathwatch are more professional, they aren't really the gothic space knights like other marines. Your 'Ravenwing chapter master' is very impressive but visually it is a Ravenwing Chapter Master not a member of the deathwatch.
Deathwatch have the best kit and the best weapons, not the most blessed and psychicly charged like say the grey knights. Where greyknights will mix holy water with their prometheum and powder the bones of saints to put in Bolt propellant the deathwatch will coat their bolts in neurotoxin and enrich the prometheum to burn just as hot in low oxygen environments.
I suppose this is just fluff Nazism, but hey, cant fault the hobby aspects of your work. Apart from maybe the GS looking a little lumpy.
47117
Post by: Farty Wiffmas
Perkustin, you make a good point but I disagree with you, I feel that they show exactly what the Deathwatch are; a variety of chapters, cultures and warriors.
Seeing as there are no rules for Deathwatch you can't really show the type of ammo they use. However the way IPS makes the weapon ornate and unique does show this.
These are only my thoughts on the matter and I'm not argueing with you only stating my opinion!
Keep up the good work!

Hmmm a tutorial... idk, I can make tutorial for skulls, or for deathwatch letters, but it's not like I'm useing some super secret techniques there.
If I do a tutorial I would rather do it about the basics of greenstuff and brownstuff modelling (since the later is quite different).
@Perkustin
It is true that the Deathwatch are very professional marines, which use the most hightech weapons. (just like Grey Knights)
However, they are not more or less spiritual than other Space Marines.
They do belive in the machine spirits, they have rituals, they worship the Emperor and every thing else every other marines does (some more, some less).
Weather they use ornamented armor or not is more a question of the marines useing that very item.
Wait until you see my sniper squads and characters like the Raven Guard assault marine,
they will be more taticool and "professional".
That said, my main goal is indeed, like Farty Williams said, not to make my Deathwatch an "elite super soldier army",
but more to make every single marine in my army reassable the very essence of his chapter.

Ok then I will do one some time
A small update
The 3rd go on the Minotaurus, for some reason he ripped appared his power armor.
Probably got hit by some acid weapon that melted his armor and hampered his combat efficiency..
and two detail shots
KrumpKop and the Shield of my Howling Griffon (yes the orkhead is sustained on life support for study^^)

Thank you very much everyone!^^
So, it's been quite for over a year now and I've silently watched the tabletop scene develop.
I myself got into the movie business (worked as 3d and texture artist on some animated features)
Also I've worked on a portfolio for concept art and just applied to university.
Now that this rather eventfull year is over I'm planning to pick up work on 40k again.
My first goal is to finish a deathwatch display board.
Stay tuned for progress the next weeks
and so that this update does not stay without pictures, here is some of my portfolio work:

@LordBoJangles
I've got a wide range of tools, but what I mainly use are two types of dentist tools
(one is much like the standart GW sculpting tool, just a bit finer, the other is a thin needle)
and some silicon shapers.
Like the one on the top:
The silicon shapers are what I use for 90% of the modelling, the metal tools are mainly for fine details,
or if I have to move great amounts of putty.

Thanks!
And you will. However it might be a while since I want to bring my "new" models to a little higher level before painting.
Also I'm getting an airbrush first as well.
And now for a little update.
It's been a really nice day today here in Stuttgart and a really busy week.
Got myself some casting equippment, everything but the vakuum container arrived last week.
Modeled the head of another marine (will be the nasty guy of my little deathwatch scene)
and worked on a new, finer and cleaner version of the deathwatch shoulderpad, that I will cast as soon as possible.
I hope I can present you the final model and some casts next weekend!
Also I've made a littile tutorial on how to model those letters, but I'm to tired atm to post it.. ><
You will probably see it tomorrow.
But for now, goodnight!

So, I need a little help here..
I've modeled the new Deathwatch shoulder pad so far, however i have a little problem now.
The crossed bones under the scull won't really fit onto the =I=, at least it looks kinda silly (allready tried it)
Now the question is, do you think it can be a deathwatch shoulder pad without the crossed bones, yes or no?
Second I've drew a little concept art for my next character, a Salamanders Deathwatch member.
He will carry a wounded guardsman arround and be armed with a heavy mastercrafted flame thrower.
Other than that he should have more of a special forces feel not overly shiny and clean.
If you have any suggestions on how to make him look more cool, I want to hear them!

You talented son of a gun.
27214
Post by: IPS
Thanks
I'm trying hard.. XD
A little update on the Salamander.
I thought he was lacking badassery, so I tried again.
Better? (notice the gurads man will still be there on the final model and the pose will change)
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
The first seems more like a younger member, still looking out for a fellow warrior. The second seems more hardened slayer that has been through hell and back again.

Post by: hemmis92
Sir, I stand in awe... This is sculpting work at it's finest, and I can't wait to see more
I actually like the first Salamander best, because he looked more balanced... The second one looks like he has had more than his share of s*** thrown his way and is kinda tired of it all...
But that's just my two cents, your work is awesome no matter what
Consider med subbed!
27214
Post by: IPS
Hmmm, that is indeed true.
I think i will go for a mixture of both.
So, a kind of battle hardened soldier but still careing.
I'm just a bit conflicted here because salamanders are described as allmost demonic space marines, but still very humane..^^
I mean how do you picture a humane demon? XD
27214
Post by: IPS
So, the work has started on this guy.
It's progressing slowly because I have to wait a day between every layer of Brownstuff, but still!^^
The torso is nearly done.
Legs and shoulderpad early WIP
And some other bits:

Love that chest piece. If the scales were smooth, I'd use it in my army for sure. Now build more faster like!
27214
Post by: IPS
hehe^^
Maybe I will cast my own bits some day
But for now... *goes back to sculpting*
Oh and I've ordered an airbrush yesterday
and now I'm quite excited to use it!
27214
Post by: IPS
I don't feel like modelling today, so I guess I use the time for another update^^
So I finally used my casting equippment.
It worked really well so far, however when I was about to cast the second half of the silcon mold
I noticed it was a very bad idea to use 1mm plastic card and clay for the box >.<
So, now I will try again with legos instead.
The salamander Legs are pretty much done (just some cleaning and sanding left)
So is the shoulderpad
and I started working on his head
Also a little experiment of modelling brownstuff on plastic wrap, and then deform it to create a cloth effect.
It worked great and I will be useing this technique to create the cape for him.
Last but not least another experiment.
I will use washers and magnets to hold the marines on the bases.
This way I don't need to pin them (at least I hope so)
and can switch them between diplay board and gaming bases as needed.
Something else:
I thought a bit about the backstory of this salamander warrior.
He was born into a Nocturn nomad family, had a hunter as father who mistreated his children,
but also tought them how to fight and survive in the wilderness, and a very devout but tender mother.
At the age of 8 he entered the astrates, was a decent smith and excellent fighter.
As a warrior he was caring for other humans, but very unpredictable and aggressive at the same time. (kind of a twisted mentality)
after 30 years of service for the Salamanders he was asked to undertake the Burning Walk, because his aggressions went out of controll.
He spent 5 years in the deserts of Nocturn.
When he finally returned his aggressions seemed to be gone, and where repaced by an introverted and passive attitute.
He talks very little and has a strong obligingly trait.
However, in rare occasions he still has aggressive outbursts, especially when he feels that helpless creature are beeing mistreated.
Since the burning walk he wears a desert robe over his powerarmor, which he patches up with salamander skin whenever it gets damaged.
He also brought back a little pet salamander, which seems to be the beeing he talks the most with nowadays.

It is indeed much to big..^^
Next ones will be much smaller.
Also I think I will try casting single piece molds and split them afterwards, this should be much easier.
@ephrael: I could make a little tutorial when modelling the cape/robe for the salamander

Oooh, very nice stuff there. Also: That's one of them vacuum chamber thingies you're using there, right? Where did you get yours?
As for "stuff to pour silicone into" - plasticard sounds like a good solution. Most people I've seen online use lego but I got that put away in some attic so I usually just use a piece of thick corrugated cardboard and of course plasticine. Works pretty well.

Glad you like it
I got mine from "Carl Roth" lab supplies.
However iirc you have to be a registrated company to order their products, but have a try.
I've actually prepared a plasticcard-box for a "singe piece" mold today, will cast it tomorrow and see how it turns out.
Also I've listened to some of those podcasts, they are indeed quite relaxing and entertaining^^
I have to admit however that the British English of the Meeples and Miniatures podcast is something you have to get used to.. XD
@ephrael
I've started with the tutorial today as I modeled the first steps of the Salamander cape. (might be a while till i finish it however^^)
Make sure to post some pictures yourself when you try it out!

Tried another cast
with platic card
which horrible failed because I wasn't quick enough with the silicon -.-
Finished the head.
Started modelling the flamethrower.
The body is allmost done.
Progress on the cape
and a little mockup with the Guardsman
ps: the tutorial for the cape is in progress
