The fiancee and I have started the Wildstar head-start. Very much enjoying it. Other than that, I just finished Arkham City, so on to Harley's Revenge, followed by Arkham Origins, and rather excited (save your "Origins is bad" comments, I've heard them and don't care, I'm playing it anyways).

If youve not played Origins yet then you should have no problems, I think the majority of them were patched out. I quite liked Origins myself, granted the story was a bit meh but it allowed for some really cool characters to be used.

I've been playing Payday 2 while it was free, pretty decent game. It is a game made for co - op though, the ai on singleplayer is so bad it elongates the missions when it doesn't need to. But yea played 7 hours so far, paid around £7, I'm not complaining. Just need to get a game with my mates and it should be much better.

Arkham origins is good. Very derivative but still a good game. As good as city? No. Did it deserve the gak reviews it got? Not at all especially when COD gets 8-10 every year for doing the same thing.

Yeah I have the same issue when I played it on ps3

It seems to me that people come down on sequels that don't improve on the previous sequel. Harder than usual. Initial game gets them hooked, second game often reaches the peak of the series, third game often falls short by either trying something new that doesn't work as well or just failing to actively improve everybody's favorite second game. Then it gets bashed, hard. Much worse than if it were a stand alone or it's own thing. Same with remakes of old games, they don't capture the imagination the same way so they immediately suck.

I only played the first one of those batman games, playing through the plot was fun but I had zero tolerance for achievements/sidequests.

Was just playing 'Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition' since there was a sale on it some time ago. It's kind of hard but nothing too serious yet. We'll see if I eat my words soon enough. I think the bigger problem is this game was poorly ported from xbox to PC. It would've been better if all the on screen command didn't tell me to use a joystick or press the A button or similar. The game isn't too hard if you can force the enemies to fight you one by one on a stairway or something. I figure most people complain about hordes of baddies pinning them down.

"Dead Space" on Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.

Controls can be a bit twitchy, but that might well be my fat fingers on a small touchscreen. I find that when low on ammo, I can fire again rather than re-load.

Other than that, the graphics and storyline are good, especially when considering that I'm playing on a phone.

Also been hooked by the dreaded "Candy Crush Saga".

Ever read "A Rainbow of Mars" by Niven? You may want to be careful about making Yggdrasil skyhooks...

I can't make a space station that has oxygen inside it and no oxygen outside it. Warmth is similar-- I have to place torches or campfires down, tehre's no hi-tech methods of having a higher temperature, or of regulating a building's internal temperature.

I want to build a room in an asteroid field that has an oxygen generator in it, for example, and pipe oxygen to everywhere else in my asteroid base.

Ahh. I could see that. Wonder if they could write air like it's water. Make a display option so you can see it flowing. I guess air would go everywhere instead of with gravity though. The nanostove is really hot, but it's obviously a cooking implement and not just a light.

What are you playing right now? @ 2014/06/02 23:36:12

Post by: Anvildude

Air would be affected by gravity- but if there could be a system where each 'block' of air can infinitely generate other 'blocks' of air and gravity only causes it to be more or less dense, or possibly that Air simply has a 'Thicker' allowance due to gravity... Then have places coded as Hard Vacuum where air can't propagate.

I was probably trying to oversimplify too much, I was mostly concerned about the air behaving to go out the roof in an asteroid base etc.

Holy crap started a new glitch with intent to farm... ye gods the matter manipulated is bad at digging

Yep more dark souls. I'm starting to see why it's hard. I'm getting the hang of it though. Surprised it's so hard so early in the game. Well this is probably no different than xcom. Just gotta power through.

Yep, it can, but it's still one of the best SW games. Great characters, a fair bit of funny dialogue, and awesome droid-blasting action. I just wish they'd have made a sequel, I want to know what happened to Sev...

I just downloaded this yesterday, and it's certainly been a wakeup call. I'd heard how nasty it could be, but seriously, it's about the only game I've played where 3 NPCs against a PC is actually an unfair fight in favour of the computer. The most surprising moment was when I went full Skyrim mode. 'oh, skeletons. One hit kill, surely.' BAM 'there, got him.. no, he's back up. No, don't do that... NOOOOO!' I died. It was not pleasant.

That said, I love the game. I tend to get annoyed with games where you can run everywhere, swing a sword for hours on end and not get tired. As much as Dark Souls was a shock, the 'realism' of the mechanics is refreshing.

@paradigm: The funny thing is there's a lot of strategies behind each of the fights you go to. Also you may need to farm the baddies for souls and then go back to the same campfire to level up or go to a merchant or something. Then you buy the gear that'll help you win the fights more easily. For instance the fire bombs help a ton against some hordes but can even take out some sword and shield elite skeletons or spear and shield. Sword and shield skeletons tend to be easier since all you need to do is attack as they're about to. You basically have to watch for an opening in their attack. Then there's the deal with using stairways to force them to come at you one at a time.

Currently my issue is killing the black knight dude guarding that one passage. I got one hit away from killing him with firebombs and then died. I was so p*ssed off. Still haven't killed that b*stard yet. Then there's the secret passage and that fat demon you need to kill that can kill you in maybe one hit (I'm guessing ranged weapons are the way to go). Finally I remember going up the staircase to when there's a final baddie that can also kill you instantly I think.

So yeah I may need to farm souls to level up and get better gear. We'll see.

Yeah, I figured out the soul farming trick earlier today, and levelled up a few times from that. I've not yet any merchants yet so I'm stuck with the basic/scavenged gear, and annoyingly I haven't got a ranged weapon yet (apart from firebombs, which I can't work out how to equip).

The combat is certainly refreshingly tactical, not just mental button mashing, and the thinking element is a nice change from 'run at them and hit them'. The spear guys are annoying as they seem to do a ton of damage when they get an opening, and you have to manoeuvre round their shields to not get repelled and left open.

Encountered my first Dragon earlier. It came from behind and one-hit-killed with its flame attack. I have no idea how I'm going to approach that one...

Given that it was free (thanks, Xbox Live) I really have no complaints whatsoever, and really, I'm amazed at how good the game is. I may look into getting the second one soon if I see it cheap.

Once you've equipped fire bombs in your inventory use mouse wheel to flip between your different items. To get to the equipment menu as well as most other menus press the 'End' key on your keyboard.

Oh wait you're playing on xbox live. Nevermind then I have no idea .

What's funny is there was a bridge crossing with skeletons fire bombing at it as well as a few skeletons in the tower. I wanted to see if it was possible to leave a message saying "You shall not pass!" or "Gandalf! Nooooooooo!!!!!"

I just bought Distant Worlds as it is reputed to be one of the best, if not the best, 4X games ever made. It currently holds the record for the most expensive game that I have ever bought at £37, and even then it was even on sale..

Good god its complicated and I only roughly know what I am doing which has so far seen me getting repeatedly brutalised by pirates within my starting solar system system long before I have even thought about branching out into the rest of the galaxies 700 stars.

So holy sh*t more 'dark souls'. After beating the first demon I managed to get past the dragon (but not kill it) and then get to the top of the cathedral (after blacksmith and fire and then I killed the two gargoyles and rang the bell. It took me quite a few hours to do so but I'm getting the hang of it. Still gotta say those huge black knight guys are pretty scary esp. when you don't have fire bombs handy or something. They say lightning is good against him but I dunno yet. I don't exactly have it in vast quantities.

I'm so glad bosses don't return or the mini-bosses for that matter. That would make this game super hard.

Yesterday I managed to reach a similar point, I think. I was able to sneak past the Dragon and his guys (largely thanks to discovering the ladder down to the Campfire and back up) but keep getting killed by either a Black Knight at the top of the tower or a giant Boar thing in the passageway. I'm thinking stealth might be the way around it, it's a shame I picked the Knight (heavy armour is loud!)

And I agree about being glad the bosses don't respawn, that would make things a heck of a lot harder.

Crusader Kings 2. Ah, it's great playing as the Norse Jarl of Carinthia, becoming the Byzantine Emperor, losing all your lands to a Mongol invasion and being forced to take refuge in a backwater county in Wallachia. What more could you ask for?

I gave up on it. I lost at least 24 times trying to get through the bit where you have to fight your way through a bajillion elite troops to shut something down. In 5 minutes. Or you die. And you get no Bacta except at the very beginning. Feth that noise

Still trying to finish Torchlight 2. At only 2 hours a week this will still take a bit

I took about a year to do that mission, or more. What's worse, the hack takes one minute to run and I auto-saved with 1:20 left of the countdown and no save for ages back before that. So every time, I had 20 seconds of actual movement time, to get in, start the hack and get out.

It's certainly difficult, but in the end I just made a beeline straight for the panel, put the squad on defensive and hacked it myself. I think I made the escape with 1.5 seconds remaining. No word of a lie, it was that close, and the feeling of finally getting through it was awesome.

The boar's weakness is its tail. If you can run all the way up to the corpse on the archway with the skeleton archers you can get some 'skulls of attraction' (or whatever it was called) which lure the boar to an area. This will allow you to stab the boar in its *ss pretty easily. I still haven't killed the black knight at the top of that tower.

Btw when you make it to the cathedral sneak around the other way through the path to the right. It leads to another building and if you go downstairs you'll find a campfire and a black smith. I think that'll help you a ton esp. since you'll be able to improve your weapons and armor finally and make them all bad *ss. I can kill skeleton knights in one hit now with a scimitar I have.

The knight in the tower is easier than the first one in the Burg, mainly because the spiral stairs limit his swings and give you an easy way to stay lower than his attacks - a trick that helps with another boss later on. His strikes are also telegraphed fairly well for easier dodging/parrying.

The boar is a breeze if you exploit the staircase and fire to your right as you reach that area. He can't fit through the gaps in the pillars, and the fire damages him quite a bit. Run towards the stairs to begin with - and clear the mobs around where it leads - then walk out from the columns to aggro the boar, and dash back as he's charging. If you do it as close to the fire as you can then he'll charge into it, but will be unable to get you through the columns. Repeat until he cooks himself.

Cheers guys, I managed to get past the boar a couple of times using the staircase and fire but lost a lot of health fighting through the skellies and zombies. I'll keep an eye out for the campfire and blacksmith, it should make things a little easier.

Looks good so far, there are even traces of a story.

Should definitely sue the FRG to get the 20€ back I had to pay extra for the PS4 version, because Steam wouldn't let me activate a non german version.

But hey, somehow I have to justify buying a PS4 in the first place, if this helps to calm my subconscious, so be it.

So I've grabbed myself the Enemy Within expansion for the "new" XCOM, seeing as it was on sale last week. However, instead of playing it vanilla, I also got my hands on the mod "Long War" which I've (by accident) heard a lot about recently. It's pretty awesome - apart from just, well, making the war longer (duh), which is achieved via greatly expanded tech-trees and a slower propagation of panic / alien incursions, it also adds a ton of new items and other features. For example:

- Post-mission fatigue and increased recovery times force you to keep multiple teams ready for action, and reassemble them when necessary. I've developed a habit of sending 1-2 newbies (which in Long War are ironically wearing red armour by default ) with the veterans, just so that I have a steady supply of experienced replacements for casualties and those "special cases" that seem to need several weeks of vacation (grr).
- An actual officer commissioning system: no longer will you have a squad full of colonels! All soldiers start as enlisted and become NCOs automatically, but to get an officer you actually have to pick and promote someone with sufficient expertise. You also need to establish a proper command hierarchy; e.g. to get a captain you need at least three lieutenants, then one of these can be promoted. This system replaces the medals from Enemy Within. Officers confer various squad-wide bonuses such as reduced fatigue or improved defence, sometimes with unlimited range, sometimes as a passive AoE buff.
- The 4 original soldier classes have been expanded into 8: Assault, Engineer, Gunner, Infantry, Medic, Rocketeer, Scout, Sniper. All with their own advancement trees and various new perks to choose from.
- XCOM interceptor pilots now have unique names and gain experience with each UFO they took down. My current ace is Maj. "Panda" Dawkins with 6 confirmed kills (they start out as FOs but become LTs with their first kill, almost like a rite of passage ). A UFOs altitude may now give hints to its mission, and several new classes of UFOs have been added. UFO-specific research projects have your pilots learn weak points, and the Stingray missile system of Microprose's original XCOM game has made a comeback as an armour-piercing warhead that does less damage than the Avalanche, but is capable of penetrating fighter and battleship hulls. Furthermore, at least attempting to intercept a UFO now acts in favour to keeping panic at bay, and all interceptors stationed on a continent conduct automatic reconnaissance missions that provide a stacking 4% buff to your satellite detection (or provide a minimum of detection capability for countries not yet covered by a satellite).
- You can now take up to 8 soldiers on a mission. Up to 12 during special events such as a base assault (including noncoms).
- Those soldiers also start with two slots for equipment, and I believe you can gain more with special armour. You also need those because ...
- There's a metric ton of new toys, ranging from half a dozen different scopes to bipods to special ammunition. There's even Anti-Personnel (large AoE but enemies in cover are unharmed) and High Explosive (good against cover, but destroy more artefacts) grenades now, and my shotgun-toting Assaults have been using these to great effect when clearing rooms SWAT-style.

Whilst this may sound like it makes the game easier ... trust me when I say that it really doesn't, it just helps you keep up with aliens that act a lot more aggressive now, and after a while boost their spawn sizes and hitpoints to outrageous levels. The bastards even start to ambush you, deliberately landing one of their UFOs fully expecting you to come have a look, and then swarm you with densely-packed clusters of elite troops, forcing you into a potentially costly retreat. Between soldiers being unavailable due to fatigue or recovery and you getting swamped by alien incursions and Council missions, you can expect to be kept on your toes. Plus, all those toys need a lot of research to be developed first; your squaddies actually start out carrying G36Cs, whilst the design you know from the original game is an upgrade!
On the upside, countries taken over by aliens can now be liberated with an assault on the alien base. Nigeria left the XCOM project in the 2nd month of my current game, so I know where I'm going to take a closer look. In general, the aliens are acting a lot more organised now and less like a scripted opponent who needs to cheat to keep the game challenging. The aliens need a base of operations (so some country leaving early for no apparent reason is working as intended), and a new subroutine has them dispatch their UFOs not just for you to shoot down, but to actually conduct their own missions in order to advance their own research into stronger troops.

Spoiler:
Various Long War features in action: officer system (one of my two captains, and hopefully-soon-to-be major), expanded classes (see above), new equipment (the sniper is carrying alloy-jacketed rounds, the rocketeer has a 2nd rocket, etc), additional squad slots (note the "scroll" buttons on the left/right) ... I just need to reconstruct my SHIV (another new feature: you can rebuild destroyed SHIVs, essentially giving you a discount for retrieved wrecks) as the Foundry just recently finished three new components I want to equip it with.

The mod and some more information can be found here: http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/88/?
Feel free to check out the videos there; they're pretty fun to watch and give a good impression of what you can expect! All in all I'd say that anyone who liked the new XCOM should give this mod a try - it brings back a few dearly-missed features of the original XCOM and makes it an overall more challenging, more complex, but also more rewarding experience.

Also, just for lulz, this is how In The Zone (which nets you a free action after you've killed an exposed enemy as a Sniper) works for the new Scout class:

Beautiful finish, that last one.

So holy crap I'm both addicted to 'dark souls' and annoyed by it. I stayed up super late playing it. So apparently all the previous stuff I've done is kill a hydra, some weird demon creature boss, a moonlight butterfly and a crap ton of stuff longer in.

I'm currently having issues with the whole pit of dragons but I've gone all the way through it. I still need to kill the big dragon though and do some other stuff down there. There's also a couple areas in there I'm having trouble with. I've barely even touched upon the graveyard/crypt area.

Ugh anyway I just had to try to complete this sh*t and it's so frustratingly long and filled with baddies and boss baddies. I need better gear and better stats to hold the gear. So basically I'm gonna go soul farming again near some huge forest knights and hopefully rack up enough exp to get through this crap.

Oh and it'd be nice if I knew wtf most of these stats on the gear meant. I don't think they explained that once in the whole d*mn virtual game guide and it doesn't help I'm playing on a PC and everything is in xbox commands.

I think part of the reason this game is tough is more because the save points are few and far between as well as the fact you can die so easily. Not only that but when you get to a checkpoint you basically regenerate all your enemies as well as your estus flasks which can be a huge pain.

---------

@Lynata: I thought you weren't really into 'Xcom: enemy unknown'. What caused the change in interest? I played the crap out of 'enemy unknown' and a bunch of 'enemy within'. I beat impossible difficulty runs but with no ironman mode. I did do Classic ironman runs. Too bad 'enemy within' made a lot of the best stuff weaker and some of the crap stuff still crappy but better. There's some stuff I missed in 'enemy unknown' but gene mods made up for it. Also EXALT are total chumps .

It's more of a love/hate relationship. I still dislike that it isn't more like the original game and has been severely dumbed down in order to appeal to a larger audience, as the creators believed stuff like time units was too much to handle for the average gamer nowadays. Just two days ago I had one of those awesome situations where I had to choose between either sending my soldier through a cloud of Thin Man acid or losing the attack action just for plotting a path around the cloud. Crap like that wouldn't have happened with TUs. I'd also love to have multiple bases and Skyrangers, especially seeing as Long War now forces me to keep multiple teams ready for action anyways.

I'm still having insane fun playing it, though, especially with the new features introduced by the Enemy Within expansion (gene mods, MECs, covert ops) and Long War (see above). It's just one of those somewhat frustrating combinations of "this is pretty neat" + "gnnhh it could have been so much better", similar to how I feel about FFG's 40k RPGs or Dragon Age 2. For what it's worth, I dig the soldier customisation, the shooting-around-corners thingie, and the "cinematic camera"; these are features that the original game was missing.

GrimDork wrote:That mod sounds like a pretty neat way to expand your gameplay, the best kind of mod.
Absolutely!

Another feature of this mod is that it adds a "Steady Weapon" action to combat, which gives a +20 to Aim in the following round. It's not quite the investment of individual time units for increased accuracy as in the original game, but it's the next best thing and another feature the game was lacking in vanilla. Needless to say, it's especially useful for Snipers.

I purchased it back when I noticed that the new XCOM had sacrificed a lot of the original's concepts - but truth be told, I'm jaded by the remake's fancy 3D graphics and the cinematic action shots. Visually, the game is absolutely stunning. And I'd kind of miss the IP's own "fluff".

But you know what, I'll patch it and see how it goes. I'm sure I can schedule a bit of testing either in-between my current XCOM sessions (for when I ragequit some extraction mission with ridiculously OP EXALT operatives again) or when I'm done with the Long War.

I haven't played 'Long War' but from all the games I've played EXALT are almost always chumps even if incredibly fun to fight. The few exceptions I had was my first play-through against EXALT with laser based weapons and the first time I assaulted EXALT headquarters leading to the death of all but one bad *ss soldier which sort of over-watched the last one to death. A bittersweet victory but EXALT had rued the day with their HQ (or one of them) burned to the ground. Honestly I hope for a sequel to 'enemy unknown' with more aliens and even more human factions like EXALT. Some neutral, good and bad parties would be fun to face. Would be cool if other weird organizations sprung up across the globe due to extraterrestrial activity. I mean it's only expected for such a large change to see global power shift dramatically. It'd be cool if we also got to fight terrorists which got their hands on advanced tech or xeno tech. Now that would make the game more interesting. Widespread global panic based around the alien invasion. The game has so much potential to go so many ways with its story. After playing the 'slingshot' content my expectations were low but then they were raised so very high with 'enemy within'. Oh and just in case you're wondering the composer of the music from 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' also did the music for 'xcom: enemy unknown' and 'enemy within'.

Ok so in dark souls I am now fighting a demon spider queen b*tch and it's a pain. I traversed all of the rest of blight city as well as the ghost city. Blight city is pretty freaking huge. Was so p*ssed when I lost 12k souls on my way back. Should've spent it all but nope. All this crap got lost for stupid reasons too. Sometimes your guy just loves to jump after doing a sword attack or enemies beat you off a f*cking cliff killing you instantly. It's really annoying.

Got the latest DLC for Rome 2, and good lord almigthy. It certanily adds a new level of difficulety to play as the Illyrian faction(the name eludes me at the moment), constant unhappy populations, more slave revolts & reglar rebelions than I care to count and rock hard troops all adds up to a rather frustrating gaming experience. Albeit a good one, so far I have crushed Rome, beaten back two invasion attempts by Athens and secured me a good number of the minor tribal teritories inland from my starting position. That and my fleets are enganging several acts of wanton piracy across the seas.

I recently picked up Starbound, and have been bouncing between it and Diablo 3 (still)

I'm definitely liking Starbound, I just wish I got more quests, and that the graphics were a bit more "modern".... Im not complaining about the 2-D sidescroller, as that's pretty sweet, I just wish that the graphics were better than 16 or 32 bit graphics, lol

Soloed one arena and a half of Chaos Exterminatus in Space Marine as a Raptor. I would have gotten further but it was practically impossible to kill the 6 man melee squad of Space Marines- when I tried to separate one from the group, he was just too tough for me to kill before his buddies could come and tear me to pieces.

Still, before that, I managed to kill over 650 enemies, including dozens of Nobs, 16 Primaris Psykers, and various other Imperial and Ork foes without dying a single time.

Don't you agree that Space Marine is wonderfully fluffy, Melissia?

But for some reason things like that never happen in the tabletop... Strange, very strange.

The story is as solid as a sheet of rice paper, the combat system is flawed and shoodily done in classic Funcom style alongside the looks & atmospheres of the game. The factions are unintresting at best with the same clicheses and overly hollywood like as in almost every RPG game.

Well I haven't played most of it but parts of it seemed alright. I feel like your opinion might effect my later perception of the game though.

For me it's like hearing Geralt being a total man wh*re in 'the witcher' made me think he was as did the person say the women in that game were pretty easy and loose. My other complaint with the game was just how few options you had and how extreme they all were. Basically there was Choice A being screw one group, Choice B screw the other group, Choice C screw everybody except yourself. In the end I didn't go neutral because I decided it generally hurt more people than if I didn't pick a side. That said I tried resolving things but because the game is stupid it only has 3 options instead of a crap ton like some other rpg's. That said for a fantasy game it did have some interesting creatures and themes. I'm surprised more women aren't offended by that game where you basically collect cards for women you f*ck. Probably making this the only card game that you get more sex for instead of less like all other card games ;P.

Another issue I had is how the h*ll does a creepy looking corpse-like dude with cat eyes get so many women to have sex with? I guess women like cats and undead dudes (twilight) or something.

Going back to it i'm kind of surprised that more women don't get offended by that game and instead choose less offensive games to get offended over. Maybe 'the witcher' just isn't mainstream enough?

Ugh sorry for the rant but I'm full of em.

I do see your point to an certain exctent, but The Witcher has somethin The secret world sorely lacks, and that key element in all RPgs are atmosphere, and as regarding his special looks, well he is after all somehow genemodified/ breed for the task he has in life. and that is slaying monsters, and he if scarily enough, quite honest as regarding to his opinions and feelings, so I guess there is also that to pipe in.

I actually really liked the first three zones of TSW... Kingsmouth is one of my favorite MMO areas ever. As long as you turn off world chat and don't just look up quest solutions - it's the only MMO i've ever played that actually made me think.

Of course eventually I just got exhausted by doing that and found myself only playing in fits and starts.

So I played 'Wargame: Red Dragon' with an online friend today. He played an American deck I think and I played my French deck and we fought against a Danish army and an American army. We had something like double the kills as we had losses and this was against very hard A.I. so expect lots or resource cheating on their part. Basically we held on while shattering their forces until they had almost nothing left. Then with most of the hour up we started pushing back with not too heavy resistance. Oddly enough the enemy holds way too many forces back from its main assaults.

My heroes would be the crappy French anti-vehicle choppers (the ones that cost like 50 points or so). One of them killed like 5 seriously awesome tanks.

I fought more Danish enemies and though it was probably because of which side of the map I was on I think a large portion of our enemies were Danish because they just can afford more units since more of their forces are crappier. Whereas the US army takes a hit having less units per card for elite units and each elite unit costs a lot. Considering we had to fight nasty high end abrams tanks, a-10's, f-15c eagles and what not I think I'm probably right with this. I dunno if it's still true but last I remember in 'wargame: air land battle' the Danish army was pretty weak. It was nearly the weakest if I remember and was lacking in many areas even if they did get more units overall. Apparently the Danish army is a never-ending tide . Maybe those Danes get 'freaky' more often then the rest of us ;P.

Probably a bit odd but would you like to play some games on steam some time? I sent you an invite with the name FKM in case you're wondering. You weren't the only Trondheim so I wasn't too sure.

I used to be really big on xcom and you said you played it on the other thread.

I guess I did that hastily but I'd rather just have a game fairly soon with somebody. Not sure it's your thing but have you been playing the 'wargame' series yet? It's that Cold War era rts game. It's a lot of fun.

I would be deligthed to play a few games with you, and I may have one of those games in my liberary, Il have a closer look when I come home from work later today and send you a message via steam

Apparently, that is a pen name and he choose it after your town. I did not knew that before I checked the Wikipedia page before posting it here .

His works are usually really good. Apparently he was not consistently translated into English, but if you get an occasion to read his work, just go for it!

AH I see well that sounds good, very good. And as for translations that is not a issue, as I can read French and do enjoy doing so

I'm playing Girhen's Greed 5: Threat of Axis on my PS2. It's a Japanese Gundam import game, one which I had been searching for for several years before finding a copy. I've had it for two years now, and I've only just recently worked up the courage to play the Earth Federation faction during the One Year War scenario on normal difficulty.

This game is kicking my butt up around my ears and costing me too much sleep. The scenario gives me 100 turns to beat it, and I usually have to re-start the scenario around turn 11 or so because I get relentlessly slammed and end up losing too much territory to keep going. I've beaten it on Easy and Very Easy, but I can't seem to get anywhere on Normal difficulty.

Bit more Dark Souls today (strangely, it's not getting repetitive despite dying and respawning hundreds of times). I've killed my first Black Knights (thanks for the tip about lightning), redefined Crown Control (who knew Halberds were so effective at clearing corridors?) and come up against the first Gargoyle... man, that thing is rough when you first fight it. It flies up, you expect it to swoop down, and then the tail with an axe attachment slams in from nowhere.

You can theoretically try and play it with a mouse and keyboard, although I must stress the words 'theoretically' and 'try' here.

I'd only say console because I got the special edition and everything is in xbox commands. I had to look up the PC commands in the steam game hub to find out what they were as well as do some other stuff. It was a pain though and some very basic keys like the menu screen have weird keys.

There aren't too many games for which I prefer a console controller. At all. I do still use one of the old nostromo n52s though, so I'm not 'strictly' mouse and keyboard.

That dark souls thing sounds interesting what with being hard and all but I don't think my rig will run anything from the last couple of years so I'll just have to enjoy it through your descriptions.

Ok so more 'dark souls' and this play-through was super hard until I found out just how easy it is. Let me put it this way. Whenever you face a big baddie like those demons with swords you will need a spear or something. I had a good one (thank god) and basically poked them all to death without much damage done to me. Our ancestors had the right idea using spears to take down bigger adversaries because they work and work well. That said they're not too great against smaller enemies so keep that in mind.

I rang both bells, dealt with that half human half spider demon queen succubus made for fan service, killed the giant later on and now I'm trying to get through that golden gate. I'll try to go through that other gate that was opened in the mean time and possibly whatever I have left remaining in this section of the game before moving on to the next bit.

Anyway like I said this playthrough was surprisingly easy and I managed to level myself pretty high (level 40 something I think). I played way too late though. It's 2 AM and I need to get up at 8 AM for work. Surprising how addicting this game got.

You're going to have a lot of fun, to be sure. Dawnguard has to be one of the best game quests in history (and there's crossbows!), Dragonborn is completely different to anything in the base game, and there's something to be said for making the Werewolf Even More Lethal...

The DLC's were great. Serana is my favorite NPC out of all of Skyrim (and she can become a companion and stays tagged as "essential" so she won't die) and the new lycanthropy/vampirism skill trees are a great addition. As if playing as a vampire wasn't already enough of an autowin button, now I can be even more powerful!

I had about 180 hours into it before I finished the main quest. I'm at 250-ish right now, and still haven't started the Civil War quest. I did finish the Dragonborn quest, though.

I played for awhile just messing around then I said screw it, went against my nature, and busted out the main quest. It's not like they make you stop playing or anything

Dawnguard was cool but it kind of killed my enthusiasm for my characters. Ubervamp just facerolls everything. I realize that it happens *eventually* for most if not every character... but it was immediate and obvious with the ubervamp. Werewolf (with perks) is ridiculous and fun. I love ragdolling enemies. However... it get's a bit boring too because of how easy murdering entire bandit camps or even towns becomes.

Still, great fun and worth doing at least once

I think Skyrim (and most Sandbox games these days) are most fun when you give yourself a couple limits. For example- My first character, I decided to go pure Mage- fireballs and lightingbolts everywhere, backed up by Atronachs. It was a blast (sometimes literally) and gave me plenty of challenge, since if I didn't see that Greatsword-wielding bandit behind me, I got facerolled. But then I started wearing heavy armour and using Bound weapons so Close combat was less trouble, and I just sorta... lost interest.

Got back into it now with a High Elf that I'm playing as a full-on Paladin- Resto spells and Sword'n'board only- no 2-handers, no dual wielding, no axes or maces (well, maces every so often. Paladin, after all). And no non-Resto or Illusion spells aside from a couple basic Flames spells for when you just have to Purge the Undead with Holy Flame.

I'm having a blast with him. Running around, hitting dragons in the face with swords and clearing dungeons of undead.

You need that one for both quests. If you don't already have it from doing the main quest then the DG quest has you find it anyway.

Themed characters are definitely the way to go for me as well. Occasionally, the theme degrades or implodes outright, but I almost always have more fun if I pick a style and rp element and stick with it.

Agreed... I usually name my character after what theme I'm going for. Thus far, I've made Thor (one hand mace/hammers and lightning magic), Ghazgull (Orc who only dual-wielded axes), Conan (two-hand hammers/light armor), Imhotep (after the Mummy movies, he was supposed to be a pure summoning caster).

And the one who's name I cant remember, she was a pure stealth/sneaky assassin.

This is very true. On my first game I got to about level 40 and could kill anything I wanted in about 6 seconds with any type of weapon and most spells. On my current game, I've kept to heavy armour, archery (for Crossbows), and two handed. It's less versatile, but means there's a lot more character to the guy than just 'I can kill you any way I want, any time I want'.

There's also something refreshing about going into the 'weapons' tab and seeing a Greatsword and crossbow, rather than at least 2 of everything that my last game had.

Palindrome wrote:I have spent 97 hours in Skyrim and hardly even started on the main quest line, theres not much point in me getting the DLC.

Actually, I'd say you're in the best place. I started DG before even going to the Greybeards, and it basically becomes a new main quest. It's very different to play when it's vampires rather than dragons as the main threat, it totally changes the dynamic.

My character walks around with a daedric battle axe of souls, dragon bone armour (daedric helmet). I love standing there and letting a mudcrab try to kill me, and then just poke it.
Does anyone else make up a background for their character?
Also, I killed harken. Now I'm doing the college quest line. I want tHe archmage robes so I can get my magic skills to 100.
Then I'l concentrate on making my house, do the companions, get the other dragonpreit masks, do the main quest line, and then figure out how to get to Quasi-morrowind land.

I do tend to create a background for my character. My current guy originated in Skyrim, and was a member of the Companions before the Thalmor came. He left to take part in the Great War and since then, returned to Skyrim haunted by what he had seen and done. By banishing the Vampiric threat and eventually the dragons, he hopes to achieve redemption and put his past behind him.

Coincidentally, I also have a think about sticking with the same armour and weapons. My current character is around level 30, but still uses Dawnguard Heavy Armour and a Steel Greatsword, both enhanced but not enchanted.

To find Solstheim (not-Morrowind), you need to do The Way of the Voice and The Horn of Jurgens Windcaller quests. 2 Cultists will then attack you next time you visit a city. Search their bodies, you find a note, which threatens revenge on you. Go to Windhelm and talk to the captain of one of the ships. You may need to bribe/intimidate him, and he will take you to the island.

True. You do need to do the Horn quest for the Dragonborn quest to activate, though,I think.

Nope. I went there without even going to Whiterun once.

Empire Total War.
Didn't like the campaign map at first (I'm more used to the map in the earlier games), but it's starting to grow on me.

Didn't like how they messed up Control Zones though. They do nothing; I've seen enemy armies walk right past my armies and take cities >.<

They should have kept it like it was before; if you are in an enemy zone of control, you can't leave until next turn.

With Dawnguard's main questline, you need 3 Dragon Scrolls. 2 of whom are from Dawnguard, one of which is the one from the "basic" game's main questline.

Nothing changes because of it - you just get to keep it until you do both quests.

I put limits on my characters and themes as well. For example, my vampire mage assassin wears light armor, but she does not wear the best light armors in the game. I limit her to Foresworn armor only, which is only slightly better than not actually wearing anything at all. It doesn't matter how heavily you upgrade that stuff; dudes with great weapons will still kill me dead in two hits. Drauger Deathlords will do it in one.

My dual-wielding Reguard only wears steel plate and uses scimitars (neither of which is top-tier equipment). I had no problem early on and through mid-levels, but eventually, steel plate starts to feel like light armor at higher levels.

My Norn sword and board fighter uses only Ancient Norn armor and weapons. Again, that's gear that isn't top of the line (and the armor is tricky to get, unless you know the one dungeon where it drops from opponents).

This sort of thing helps keep the challenge level interesting. It doesn't matter how good my skills are, if my gear is not as advanced as the stuff my opponents are wearing.

My Paladin doesn't use Orcish and won't use Daedric stuff- or Ancient Nordic or Forsworn. Why? Because it isn't 'Pure' enough. Even though that means I'm not using the best stuff I can.

I have a "Dervish" (I call it)- an Argonian dual-wielding maces that's all about pure speed. Only Fur armour, because that goes best with the war-paint.

If I play through again it will be as The Warrior. Doesn't really carry stuff around between encounters. He may be allowed to keep certain magic gear like a ring/necklace, and whatever armor he finds is ok (not decided on light or heavy, heavy gives a significant advantage through the unarmed/gauntlet perk thing) but he goes in bare-knuckle and only uses weapons as he finds them, discarding (potentially vendoring if it's convenient) weapons between areas. Probably more barbaric light armors now that I think of it. Little to no magic, maybe restoration since he'll only use potions as he finds them.

Khajit, or to a lesser extent argonian, would be stronger for the build being better at unarmed, but the main trick is knocking someone out to get some gear. And none of that pesky inventory management crap. Or sneaking around. He's too cool for that stuff.

That's one of the interesting side-effects of going for a Speed build- because Inventory Carry Limit is determined by Fatigue (for some reason), the fastest characters are also the ones that can carry the most.

Back to Skyrim.

I usually start with a new character concept.

This time, I am recycling a concept (right down to the name) but choosing to diverge right at the beginning. On my last run-through with this character, she began with the main quest. This time, she's doing the Companions quest first (which she did not do at all last time). I am interested to see how this impacts the character.

True! I like how your paladin does not use certain kinds of weapons. I wish I had thought of that during my paladin (sword & board Imperial) playthrough but to be honest he didn't make it very far down the path of chivalry.

He was corrupted by the Cult of Namira and became an anti-paladin. He willfully became infected with sanguinare vampiris, cultivated the infection to fruition, then sought out the Volkihar Clan only to betray them. From there, he forged a pact to serve Boethiah and undertook a pilgrimage to Solstheim to worship at the Reclamation Shrine. Fortunately for Man and Mer alike, he vanished from history at that point.

For me, Elder Scrolls is about roleplaying. I like the idea of limitations because it demonstrates the autonomy of the character. I have used a variation on the weapons limitation technique. My shield maiden character, Freyja, does not use any Imperial armor or weapons. Freyja also worships Kynareth and so always wears her amulet.

I try other techniques, too. One is ritual -- the idea of ceremonially doing something in the game that has no in-game effect. For example: before Freyja enters the Whiterun temple, she takes off her boots. She walks barefoot through the water around the central image counter clockwise three times, prays at the shrine, the walks through the water three times clockwise before leaving.

Another technique involves NPC interaction. Freyja does not tolerate insults. If an adult NPC of roughly equal status to her insults her, she hits them. If they draw a weapon, she draws hers. As you can imagine, this could end with death(s). Freyja does not dispute that her actions are illegal, however, and patiently serves her time in prison.

Wolfenstein, incredibly polished game but boy there have been two major difficulty spikes so far. I would relish fighting the larger, tougher, enemies more if you didn't have to go back 10+ minutes if they defeat you.

It is a little jarring that the regular grunts are shredded to gristle after a few rounds yet a Man wearing hefty body armour and a ricocheting shotgun can take more than 20 shells and more than a full magazine of assault rifle rounds.

All in All though it is a very enjoyable game with an incredibly well told story. Also i have amassed a couple more tools that may even the odds for the latter part of the Story.

EDIT: Also Wolfenstein wins the award for the most Opaque video settings i've ever seen, they sound like a programmer's debug tools.

I started playing Icewind Dale 2 again today, and so far all has gone well. Well if you count a few hundred Goblinoids , heaps and heaps of Bugbears & Ogres poiling in on you and the odd dragon attempting to roast you alive. But thankfully my all Drow party has so far slaugtherd them all in a dazzeling show of wanton slaugther. But as I draw nearer the first of the major laberyints and the ensuing attempts to find a way outI find myself regretting not bringing an second Cleric as the additional healing and such will come in handy.

Sounds great. I like the idea of the temple rituals and the responding to insults, although being a werewolf and having that policy could lead to a monstrously high body count (I swear, one more guard makes a comment about hair coming out of my ears and it's game over )

For my own characters, there are a few things I always do. I always make a point of carring a basic, unenchanted steel or iron sword, no matter my level, for when you meet characters that challenge you (like the Old Orc that wants a good death); I fight them in a duel, helmet off, basic sword and maybe a shield, no magic.

I also tend to have a companion that I will put as much effort into as my own character; I try and make sure that if there's a weapon or piece of equipment a character can use more than mine, I give it to them. For example, my non-magic fighter gives Serana any staffs or magic-buffing amulets ect.

Character backgrounds! Yay!
Ok, my character was born in cyrodil, but was kidnapped by a cult of molag bal worshippers as a baby.
A daedra hunter saved him before the worshippers could perform a sacrifice. The daedra hunter raised my character, but shortly after my character reached manhood, the daedra hunter was murdered. My character decided to leave skyrim, and try to find his real parents, when he was captured at the border. Having grown in the daedra hunter's cabin, he had no knowledge of the war, and initially appreciated the stormcloaks. After coming to the defence of a dark elf woman on his first entrance of windhelm, he realised how wring he was. He spoke to the jarl of whiterun, and soon slayer a dragon. He didn't care about being dragonborn, and ignored the greybeards' summons. He would complete his father's work. He set off to capture every daedric artefact in skyrim. Eventually, he succeeded. But the power of malag bal's mace controlled him. Daedric armour grew over his skin. And he was led to commit ever bloodier acts of violence. Culminating in joining the dark brother hood, and murdering the emperor. It was at this point that the influence of meridea and azure cleansed the dragonborn's soul of bal's influence. He joined the collage of winterhold, seeking guidance. But once he became arch-mags, he realised he would never find redemption. He crafted dragon bone armour, and threw off the daedric plate. But he kept the helmet. He obtained a daedric battle axe, and it became his weapon of choice. When he heard of a group of vampire hunters, it was ireesistable. He ended up helping serana, refusing the curse of vampiric powers. After all of this, he finally travelled to high hrothgar. He met with the grey beards.
But soon joined the companions, having witnessed members of the group killing cultists. And soon he was gifted the powers of the wolf.

Hurray! Mass Effect 3 Done! HUZZAH!

Uff, massive, massive game, I'm happy I finished the trilogy but I sure as heck felt there was way too much padding sometimes

Spoiler:
Played it non-stop from the moment you enter the Cerberus base right till the end, ufff, this was intense. I was not expecting that ending, all alone with only a pistol

but heck, I felt most Cerberus stuff felt like padding. Kai Leng? The dude almost didn't even show up, this awesome villain shows up outta nowhere, does a few things and bam, dead.

And the Conduit kid, well, I was reminded of this Tv Trope instantly: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere Where the heck did you come from?!

Ah well, they did explain but I was still in "WTF?!" mode.

To be fair I think the first modern warfare game's zombie mode included one of the most ridiculous scenario's ever including castro, kennedy, Nixon and some other guy fighting off a zombie apocalypse. It was really surreal and hilarious. If only Marilyn Monroe popped out with machine gun boobs or something I would've lost it even more.

Edit:

Played some more 'Wargame: Red Dragon' with an online friend. I did alright with Denmark which is a serious test of skill but it is possible even if hard to play. Then I played with the Scandinavian deck which including Denmark, Sweden and Norway and they do pretty well together. Of all things I think denmark's planes are ok but not great. Norway has better scouts which are snipers and have exceptional stealth considering they're 2 man teams. The AT and AA infantry of the swedes is also not to be trifled with. The tanks are still fairly weak and the helos are almost non-existent (I think it's just 2 helos with 4 anti-tank missiles each) but they do well enough that you can handle most problems. The air units are also decent enough. There's one from Sweden or Norway that does 10 AP damage with cluster bombs and can take out vehicle columns pretty handily. I even managed to take out 3 t-80s with one.

With Denmark you pretty much have to rely on throwing your anti-tank vehicles in trees and relying on them for most of your anti-tank needs. They have some decent vehicles but nothing too great. The air power is a bit lacking. Everything else is pretty much crap. Even the AA infantry is weak (the 'hamlets') and they lack any long ranged anti-tank infantry. So basically unless you can stun your enemies with artillery or airplanes and move in with anti-tank infantry it's mostly just your crappy helicopters of one type and your anti-vehicle of another. Even then you're better off stunning enemy vehicles with airstikes and similar just so that the enemy vehicles remain at long range while being shot at by anti-tank missiles instead of closing in and taking out your anti-tank vehicles. I am thinking of possibilities though. Perhaps dropping short ranged anti-tank infantry by helicopter would work against some enemy's tanks but there will probably be AA nearby or something annoying. Denmark's lack of options leaves their army's players at a struggle to figure out what to even do.

Got back to playing Dwarf Fortress. A dwarf broke his leg while dealing with an insane dwarf so I sent him to the hospital. I guess they decided to amputate his leg.
Went something a bit like this:

Me: Alright, sure! I think I have a crutch or two somewhere.

Game: (Whatever the Dwarf's name was)'s leg has become attached to a bronze crossbow!

Me: WHAT?!?

Oh sweet and delicious Steam Sales. Playing The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II together with a friend. It's everything VH1 was, only better! Lady Katarina remains one of the best NPCs I ever had the pleasure to meet, she's almost as good as KOTOR's HK47.

And yesterday got Rogue Legacy... oh man, imagine a Rogue-like game but played liked a Metroidvania: I sent over 20 adventurers to their doom before I managed to kill the first boss Lady Chun Li II the Barbarian Queen is now the first true hero in my family tree

Yeah soul tear is a cool shout, I use it on goats
The dragon summoning one is super usefull when you're in a big 'cabin' area, like the end of some Nordic ruins. His name is Durnerviir, and if you look at him carefully, he slowly rots away, rather Than just flying or remembering away, so cool.
Oohdahving, the dragon who becomes your friend at the end of the main quest line is cool too. I feel like the battle with sodium should have been some how, bigger. The last time I did was like two years ago.

And so, striding from the halls of Sovngarde, stepped the brave Dragonborn, accompanied by the long-dead heroes of the past, those had defeated their ancient foe before. Before them stood a dark, vile creature, the mighty Sodium...

I took a break from it to to play xenonauts. Xenonauts is basically like the old xcom from what I heard.

As far as dark souls goes it's fun but it's nice not always going through a huge challenge every fight you go through. Dark souls is rewarding sometimes when you figure something out and succeed and do it well but sometimes it's nice to play a game where not everything is a super huge challenge all the time. I play xcom, warhammer fantasy, xenonauts and dark souls mostly and I find each of those to be challenging (warhammer fantasy is tough with experienced players). I probably actually need a game that is just pure fun and/or stupid right now.

Shadowmere should respawn either at the pool at the Sanctuary or where he died, about 10 days afterwards.

There is, however, a couple of glitches that 'delete' him from the game on the 360 or PS3, so you might be out of luck (this recently happened to my brother, he's still cross about it).

Solstheim is... different, to say the least, but I think it offers a lot more to characters that are a low-to-middling level (20-30) as includes some new stuff that only those sort of levels can make use of (Nordic/Stalrihm weapons/armour, new shouts, new dungeons and enemies). By the time you're level 45+, you can stomp anything in Solstheim just as easily as anything in Skyrim (with the possible exception of Miraak, the joint highest level NPC on the game) so it gets a little boring.

It's certainly different, though, the whole look and feel of the place is nothing like Skyrim. You'll love it or hate it, it depends.

Starting to enjoy Witcher 2 a bit more, found a mod that gives you 3 perks per level which mostly solves one the games bigger flaws. The flaw being that you have to invest several perks just to remove massive Handicaps, fun idea; don't include those massive Handicaps.

Although i am starting to find the combat just about tolerable i am glad i am just slavishly following a Gamefaq this time, otherwise i'd miss out on a ton of quests/outcomes you'd only find through blind luck. Here's a perfect example of the ridiculously counter-intuitive behaviour the game asks of you:

During a sidequest a shady dude asks you to wear a blindfold so he can escort you to his hideout. This sounds dubious so you can refuse (in game terms wearing the blindfold will put you at an insurmountable disadvantage if you want the full reward).

If you refuse the guy tells you, in no uncertain terms, the blindfold is a 100% deal-breaker. At this you have two dialogue options (paraphrase) 'Ok i'll wear the blindfold' and 'no deal'. The 'no deal' option does NOT say (bluff) 'no deal' or (persuade) 'no deal', there is no (Axii) 'I don't need a blindfold' option. To any logical human being refusing the blindfold a SECOND(!) time and having the dialogue say 'no deal' suggests picking this option would fail the quest.

But due to terrible design this is the illogical option you're supposed to pick. Through no act of persuasion the trader, who has already laboured how he prides himself on secrecy, suddenly give in at your brattish refusal to play ball and just marks the location on your map allowing you to storm in and slaughter them all.

I still haven't quite gotten used to the controls. I was completely expecting to go in there with the mouse buttons being used and WASD-Space as the movement controls, but it's all reversed- old school computer controls, I guess, from before there were peripherals. I keep jumping or dropping instead of moving or attacking.

Luftrausers, however, is amazing. Submersible engine and Melee body and you become a living torpedo. Machine gun, Melee, and Turboboost, and you can just death spiral all over the screen.

Started up a new Skyrim character. My main character is a stealthy Wood Elves huntress/enchantress that likes to strike from the shadows, so I decided to go for a totally different angle with this new one - a Breton heavy-armor wearing, great-weapon wielding Battlemage. I named her Gwennyr, which I'm very proud of as it has a nice Celtic/Arthurian feel to it.
I also installed the "Random Alternate Start" mod so I don't have to play as the Dragonborn again.
I've already slain 3 dragons and gotten to level 12. I'd forgotten how addictive and plain out fun Skyrim is. There are things I need to do today, but screw that! I've got quests to finish and dragons to slay!

I've been on a Skyrim kick myself recently, continuing with my post-Dawnguard paladin character who is now beginning to experiment a little with destruction magic and dual-wielding weapons (just because Nordic swords/axes are too cool to only have one of). The Main Quest remains blissfully ignored for the most part, with most of my efforts going into finishing off the various Vampire quests and sorting out Solstheim.

This 'random start' mod sounds great, I take it it gives you much more freedom with the early development of your character? I wish someone, somewhere, would work out how to mod on Xbox.

Oh yeah, it gives you a ton more freedom. Aside from spawning you in a random location on the map (possibly even in the bowels of a Dwemer ruin deep underground!), it lets you choose a starting kit of weapons, gear, and potions based on what kinda character you wanna play. There are 3 main categories of kits - Mage, Warrior, and Stealth.

There are also mods that monkey with stats and skills on character creation, I use the Character creation Overhaul mods. Most of the mods I have installed make the game pretty and they do a really good job.

The random start mod is exactly that; its entirely possible that you will spawn somewhere incredibly dangerous, there are apparently 463 different start locations. The first time I tried it I spawn next to a dungeon that I obviously entered only to get annihilated to the first beastie I met but anything is better than the irritating scripted sequence at the start of the game.

Another excellent mod is Lockpick Pro, its effectively a cheat that makes the irritating lockpicking mini game trivially easy.

Back before my laptop broke, I had 170+ HOUSE mods.
Also, I got to 100 in all magic except enchantment and restoration.
Now that being a Mage isn't as difficult anymore, I put away my robes and put my dragon armour with daedric helmet back on.
Once I get my enchantment to 100 I'l probably smith/enchant/improve a new set of armour. Might even put my daedric battle-axe away and use a sword and shield. But probably not, I like my battle-axe.

Traitor class unlocked and considering how OP it is, it's time to, putting it mildly, rape the crap outta the normal bosses and monsters. Payback is gonna be a b*tch.

As I can't manage to make much else work on my laptop (screw you Ubuntu) I've installed Project Zomboid. I originally tried to run it ages ago on another computer, but it kept bugging out. Now its running fine. I'm on my first character and somehow haven't died yet. Twenty five days in and I have a nice little fortified house in the middle of the suburbs, and yet it hasn't been besieged once (though I'm waiting for the inevitable horde to turn up and murder my character any day now). At the moment its a scramble to put together rain collectors and set up some crops, as even though I have plenty of non perishable food I'm wary of the power and water going out. One thing I would change (I'm playing sandbox) is setting the days to be longer. The current half hour of sunlight (days are an hour long) is only really enough to check out one or two houses before it becomes dark. With the distance to unlooted buildings becoming longer soon enough my character will either have to be travelling at night, or eventually holding up somewhere (which given how fortified their home is, I'm loathe to hide in an apartment with just a sheet over the window and a rough barricade on the door).

Overall though its a fun game. The resolution could be higher and I'd appreciate it if the view distance was extended (though I suppose that forces players to slink about the back streets). Moving about homes could be better, as currently, at least for me, my character's vision doesn't pop in quite right (as in when moving up a set of stairs to the first floor one has to move out of the stairwell onto the level before you can see anything there. This is a problem when zombies have broken into the house and are loitering about there, as I once found out). Combat's decent, and I kind of like crapping myself whenever a zombie starts grappling with my character as an easy job can quickly turn into a fight for your life (I don't know how one becomes scratched, but luckily that hasn't happened yet). I don't think that I should be using guns at all, but I have a couple stockpiled in my character's bedroom in case of a siege (I've blockaded the inside of the house so the zombies have to break through a few barricades whilst I can shoot at them). As good as things are going for my character right now, I know that one day they'll walk into a back room somewhere or be walking down the street only to be onset by more zombies than can be delt with. I don't know if there's any way to treat an infectious bite, but right now I'm regarding it as a death sentence. So whenever that does happen I think I'll have them scoff down every jar of mayonnaise there is to hand then, racoon plushy in hand, have them jump out of the first floor bathroom window as many times as it takes to make the pain go away (....uh unless they break their legs or something and wind up dying of exposure in the middle of the street).

Man... I kind of feel sorry for your game, poor thing is getting brutalized.

Been 'shopping' skyrim mods, think I may look into iNeed and one of the extra wilderness encounter mods to go along with random alternate start. That way I have to worry about dodging groups of enemies, AND eating/drinking/sleeping, all from a random non-superheroic start.

I haven't gone back to Skyrim since the computer I has it installed on died, what two years ago? The problem with Bethesda sandbox games that you need to install so many mods to play them properly, and well I can't remember each and every one of them. I went back to New Vegas last year only to find many of the mods I felt were great to be no longer available (I'm meaning the Fallout 3 ones too, which is like six years old now). Even further back is Morrowind, which I replayed just before New Vegas and found the same issue. Ideally then if I'm going to replay Skyrim I'd buy myself something that can run all the shader mods, as otherwise I'm not touching that time sink with a barge pole (my steam profile states I have 400 hours in Skyrim, but I know that's way wrong as, like both of the new Fallout games Steam doesn't record your hours if you're running a script extender. Which is saying that the 800 hours I have in New Vegas are totally not a fraction of what I actually played ).

As far as mods for Skyrim (and well most games actually) I suggest one which increases damage by about four times the norm, but also makes armour much stronger. I made my own modpack of a couple of dozen item mods (not just armour and weapons, but plenty of generic loot too. Hell I sat there and downloaded images of ancient coins, not just nordic, but of Akaviri and pre-Imperial Morrowind too, and put together a currency mod) to make the game more varied. I'm not so into mods which add new creatures, or at least how they chose to implement them. Again I love extra variety, but for some reason when someone adds new creatures they feel like they need to increase spawn rates so players are guaranteed to see them. See I prefer being able to walk about for lengths of time just enjoying the scenery, not having to fend off Nightmare_Beasty_#11 for the twentieth time in the past five minutes. Immersion mods like hunger systems are a must too, though I also quite liked the weather system ones as well (ie the one where you could freeze to death if you weren't wearing the right clothing or exposed in a snow storm. ...Given my character at the time wore a jacket and trousers more suited to Souther climes, they needed quite a large magicka pool to keep all those fire balls lit).

My favorite Skyrim mod is the "alternate start" mod, which lets you choose how you want to start, including being a house owner, a hunter, some Necromancer in a cave, and so forth, including some options only for certain races.

Yeah i like that one also, a few of them give you too much good loot though.

I like just picking 'i was attacked and left for dead' as there is a tense 5-10 minutes of finding a weapon of some sort, sometimes you can be spawned in some nasty places.

Still playing Witcher 2, got to act 2.

Spoiler:
Roche really is the right option, Flotsam doesn't descend into chaos and that scumbag Loredo still gets his due. Plus the only character worth saving, Cedric, dies regardless of whether you choose Iorveth or Roche.

Hmm here's a thought. I've got a Asus Transformer tablet/laptop hybrid thingie. It isn't the cheapest one, but it isn't the high end model either. I'm stuck to mouse and keyboard while using it (unless I get bored enough to get a usb hub and bring my N52 back into the game).

You guys have any suggestions for a bit of an older game that has aged particularly well? I may go back to IWD2 which it runs fine. I can get it to do fine for mount and blade but I'm burnt out there, and starbound I'm waiting for full release. Anything come out lately, maybe something indy or just simpler than usual, that you might suggest?

I'd like to play skyrim but I'll leave that for the desktop in the winter (less work hours then), but it would be nice to play something adventurous sooner. Something you can put down/save/pause frequently since the toddler likes to climb on me while I'm using it

Thanks for any advice

What kind of game are you looking for?

Hitman Blood Money and contracts are fun Steath/puzzle/action games that run on older systems.

Dirty cheap atm

http://www.gog.com/promo/summer_hitman_bundle_200614

Theif 1-2 and deadly shadows are good too, though I remember you not liking it much.

Have you played planescape tourment? Similar gameplay wise to Baldurs gate but far more story focused than IWD.

Fallout 1 & 2 are also both excellent.

Could give Oblivon or Morrowind a try if you are in the mood for some eldar scrolls action.

The combat in the original Witcher game isnt great but the game itself is pretty fun and the story and characters are intresting.

That sounds somewhat interesting. I wonder a bit if I would really like it either... usually playing through someone else's vision of 'how a game should have been' rubs me the wrong way for some reason. But who knows, it could be cool, game does tend to get overly easy. I'll have to check that one out before I finalize my mod list and try playing the game again.

@Carlos thanks!

I may already have the hitman game from a steam sale a couple of years ago. I own Planescape Torment, just haven't tried it yet. Might, not a bad idea. Thief may not be a bad idea either. I wonder if my poor little rig would be willing to run Oblivion, would be cool if it would though. I tried fallout1 and couldn't do it once. Maybe I'll try it again sometime.

Skyrim: Requiem is a complete overhaul that aims to make Skyrim a lot more realistic - and it achieves said goal. Extremely higher immersion than before but the difficulty spiked as well - arrows are extremely deadly vs. lightly armored enemies (and you!) as they should rightfully be, stamina is more important, the combat system is improved...so many changes. It's a completely different and, to me, far superior experience.

Mods like Requiem and Skyrim Redone are the sorts of things I tend to leave until after I've beat the game at least once.

Skyrim Redone is the one I'm looking at the most- it's similar to Requiem, but from a different person's perspective of what the game should/could have been.

Also, did you ever hear that the AI and Radiant Quest system in Skyrim was actually dumbed down before release? The world used to act a lot different- more like an actual place, with what you did truly affecting things- but apparently it was either too hard or too weird for the playtesters, so they went and made it more 'traditional RPG'.

So, after a long hiatus, I reinstalled both Starcraft 2 and Company of Heroes 2.

See, I really love Wargame: Red Dragon, but it's currently awaiting a mega-patch/free-DLC update to the factions I enjoy the most, along with the whole dynamic of the game is being looked at (for a Cold War strategy game, no one is using tanks, it's all special-forces and helos), so I'm taking a break until it changes.

Therefore, as I'm primarily an RTS player, I wanted to go back to games I didn't spend much time with. SC2, while I felt it had one of the best traditional RTS campaigns I've ever played, is something I never really tried online.

Well, now I have, and let me sum it up for you: Koreans be Scary.

Lots of games have specific communities which excel at it; the Men of War series, another favourite of mine, is dominated by teams of particularly hardcore Russians. If you see Cyrillic in chat, you know you're going to be fighting for your life. Starcraft, well most people know about its particular community; hell, it's the only videogame I know of broadcasted like sports, so similarly in fact that I can't watch it, I can't stand vapid sports broadcasting.

But back on subject, I got murdered, horribly, repeatedly, and I quickly realized Starcraft doesn't really cater to the kind of RTS elements I'm good with. It's sort of a "twitch" RTS; correct use of hotkeys, actions-per-minute, and manually controlling build ques and blocks of different units with no active AI makes it a very busy game. I see why it's kind of the holy grail of competitive games, but I think I'll stick to co-op comp-stomps (as the AI is actually very competent; Hard just isn't "it cheats more," it's actually hard, using tactics players have used, to say nothing of Harder and Brutal), and the excellent campaign, especially as the campaign has a lot more units to play around with, not being concerned with e-sports balancing.

As for CoH, I loved and played the hell out of the original for years, but I got disillusioned on how the two base factions played like their equivalents in CoH. Especially as the Soviets played just like the USA, and I was, and still am terribad with that particular playstyle, so I couldn't bring Pure Communism to my enemies effectively. I figured I'd give it another shot, especially with two newish armies to spice things up. We'll see how that goes.

Getting towards the end of Witcher 2, odd side note, the crafting is actually a strong aspect of the game. Also if you're not save scumming the minigames/other exploits you never have a ridiculous amount of money. For instance i just about cleared myself out crafting a high level armour. Is a bit cheap the method they used though, making everything almost worthless to sell.

Another piece of especially bad design irked me, why include a Werewolf, with a unique model and Animations, if it's just going to be a secret very few will stumble across? It would have made a cool little quest, especially as a Werewolf is a very Witchery thing to fight.

All of this Skyrim talk has gotten me back into playing it. I had to re-start my Redguard paladin after Dawnbreaker glitched out of my inventory :(

Can't go draugr hunting without Dawnbreaker...

Five characters and I *still* haven't done anything with the main quest beyond getting the Horn of Whatshisname so I can get a fully upgraded Fus Ro Dah. Everything else has been DLC packs and side quests and exploration.

And I'm playing on a console. I don't even have mods to distract me from the main quest like I do in New Vegas. This game is crazy huge.

Completely agree. I loved taking my time through those areas.

On-Topic - I finished Uncharted 3. Yup, that ending was extremely underwhelming...like the rest of the game. Such a disappointment considering how much I enjoyed Uncharted 2.

Started playing Skyrim on PC with a couple mods on the Steam Workshop. Definitely an improvement, but I need moar mods!

Also playing Metro 2033 for the first time. Holy feth, loving this game!

X-Com has been great, too. I only really play it when I have time to sit down for a couple hours.

*Note, I have video game ADD. I can't seem to play only one game at a time

Wait, there's a werewolf?
I never encountered one 0_o

Anyway, I kind of like how it's a secret. It emphasizes even more what a scary place the Witcher world is.

I agree that the game's economy is a bit unfair on the player, but at least it keeps the economy relevant.

It does look/sound great, and I'd love to be able to give it a shot. Alas, one of the curses of being a console user, but I suppose it's a fair trade; I can't stand games on computer.

I downloaded World of Tanks on the 360 today, it seems like it's going to be a steep learning curve (I didn't realise there's no respawn) but it looks to be very tactical and deep for a free game, and the graphics are great. Can't complain for £0.00

I remember playing tau in that. The game is overly easy with tau. I think it's because even in that game they were OP as h*ll. Then again I think necrons probably were too. Imperial guard was rather weak I think esp. since in dark crusade we had no elite infantry and used some heavy weapons for firepower. I suppose it wasn't all bad but I never really got into dark crusade and preferred winter assault myself. I was a guard player and I bought the first two as a combo pack so I wasn't fond of re-making my strategy based on the huge change between the two games.

Oh and relic units like the baneblade became a bigger deal in dark crusade considering the tier 4 limits on tanks and on tier 3 elite units.

Completed "DLC Quest" today except for the speed run achievs, which means beating the first "game" in under 10 mns and the second under 12. Yeah, I didn't mind since it was very cheap thanks to the sales, but bear that in mind if you are curious about this game. It took me around 1 hour and something to fully complete everything else.

Don't get me wrong, it's funny and I really enjoyed it, but I have at least 1 friend that'd be furious if he spent any money for a game that is possible to beat in 10 mns ^^;;

Finished Witcher 2, Got two Save games ready for the sequel. I don't think i'll bother with Iorveth's pat, that's the one i chose on 360 and i recall it being fairly unsatisfying.

Even with my ridiculously overpowered level 50 Geralt (max level is 35 lol) i couldn't beat 'The Operator', turning the braziers off was too fiddly with the controller.

I have been hard on the game but that's only because, speaking to the NPC and uncovering all the lore was deeply enjoyable as was the story on the whole. Even the combat eventually showed a little promise. I just feel that had i not been slavishly following an 100% Gamefaq i would have missed out on soo much awesome stuff. Having played it previously on console without a gamefaq, i can tell you, i did miss out.

Maybe i'll return to Dragon Age now, at least bioware make their games in such a manner that they want to Show Off all the best content, instead of hiding it away.

The brutal struggle of CSM vs SM combat was displayed poorly in Space Marine overall. In Exterminatus, they did it wrong in a particular way. Balance should not be achieved by slapping on massive health and ludicrous hitstun onto the enemy Astartes to compensate for lack of brains.
