[HELP WANTED] Dakka Monthly PDF Magazine - Recruiting Helpers @ 2011/09/23 15:28:13

Post by: TheMumm

As an almost perpetually-bored, non-degree Graphic Designer, I'm always looking for fun little projects related to my field. I was thinking, Why not a little Dakka Monthly publication? We could get a little design/content team going, pick a few of the 'best' threads, and turn them into articles, make 'em snazzy, and publish a monthly .pdf or something. We could run minis of the week, painting articles, battle reports, sort of a non-profit online white dwarf. Whatd'ya think?

Warseer does something similar to this (dunno if it's still going) called Firebase. It's basically a free online digital magazine.

Not sure about the threads into articles thing, not sure how that'd work.

It's like reporting. We'd have to paraphrase much of it, but still present the information that the thread provides and arrange it in such a fashion as to fit an article format. Sort of like writing an article from an interview. Obviously, anything we put into the 'zine would have to be credited to their original authors.

I haven't seen much of Firebase, but that's the basic gist of it.

I'm very much in favour of it, but none of the existing staff have anything like the time to sort it out. Anyone who wants to organise and spearhead something like this is more than welcome and will receive full support. Especially good now that reading on kindle, phone and ipad is much more common.

I'm willing to put some time into this, as and when I can, but it would be contingent on someone else heading up the project. Give me a shout if something's getting off the ground, though.

I'm just going to think aloud a little here.

I don't think it'd be too hard to drum up some article writers, both thread compiling and original stuff. There are some pretty vocal and eloquent people here and I'm sure we could get some good stuff with ease.

How about periodical fiction? I could see a place for that, and many already write fan-fic on the site.

I've seen a fair few smallish wargaming webcomics being posted up here. Maybe one of those could be syndicated, of sorts.

As for myself, I would happily dive into an editorial role. Sorting through submissions, copy editing, that kind of thing. I could probably even throw together the odd article, if space were thin.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK, I've got to be off now, but I'm going to exalt this thread both so that I can check back on it easily and to show the measure of my esteem for the idea.

One of the websites I used to be a part of used to do one of these. It was quite good fun submitting articles, and reading through product reviews, codex analysis, the occasional interview, etc.

I'm interested.

I can handle layout and the design end of things. I'm going to be out of town this afternoon and probably unavailable tomorrow morning, however, I will keep an eye on this thread on my phone and we can start organizing ourselves tomorrow afternoon and get some balls a-rolling.

Also, While I'm thinking about it, I say we should shoot for a December 1st deadline. That will give us enough time to co-ordinate and layout the first issue, and allow us some slush while we work out the kinks of the process.

Depends on how smooth the process goes. I do know that stuff like this, especially when it's done on personal time, can be a real hassle getting off the ground. We'll play this first one by ear, but, the more I think about it, the more exciting I am getting about it! We're onto something, I think, gentlemens

Here are some thoughts on potential content: Topic names are not meant to be anything impressive, just giving the overall direction for that section.

Work In Progress
- An update from the past month of major project logs across dakka (can flow from issue to issue).

Da Paintin Studio:
This search shows some of the best overall models in the gallery. Just take 100 or so per issue and make a beautiful series of montage pages with a slight theme to them.

Da Chop Shop:
This search takes a bit more digging, but will show the best unpainted models (amongst others).

For both of the image searches above, only use models that have 'Created by ...' with a known user, not 'unknown creator' to avoid potential copyright issues.

Fiction:
Not too popular for reading on a computer screen, but good on a portable device. Select stories from the fiction forums are the way to go

Cover images:
This search has quite a lot of artwork, but is quite often copyrighted GW, so check that it is an original piece before using it, but it could help for the cover of each issue.

News and Rumours:
Summarising new releases from manufacturers other than GW will always be interesting to read in my opinion.

Other than that, basically what you've talked about so far - highlighting existing threads and converting them into a more readable format is the way to go. Using the 'top threads' link will show the most recent (1 week, recent update, all time) exalted threads to give you hints as to what people might find interesting and what might be good to convert to articles.

Could probably even write a small bit about the chosen models for the picture section. Focusing on the highlights of it and such.

Grey and rainy Monday morning here in the Mitt.

Figure it's time to get 'ta work.

First and foremost: Staff. I know some of you may have posted here already expressing interest, but let's go ahead and make it semi-official. With that in mind, we should also take the time now to really hash out the kind of content that's going into this. Here's a little list I sketched up, what do you think;

+News and Rumors (pretty self-explanitory)
+Hobby
Warhammer, 40k and Warmahordes Painting and Modelling Tutorials
Perhaps split into 3 series, Basic (covering general things and beginner stuff), Advanced (along the lines of techniques like glazing, layering, OSL, sculpting, etc.) [I suspect that this will be the case for most things], and Enthusiast (Things like scratch-builds and Golden Daemon-level stuff).
Mini of the Month, straight from the forum thread.
I also think running a little table somewhere in this section with the Modelling Vows would be kinda fun. Give em some more incentive to keep up on it.
+Gaming
Battle Reports and Tactica for WFB, 40k and Warmahordes. Perhaps some campaign coverage.
+Fiction
Short Stories, syndicated ongoing stuff, that sort of thing.

I guess this would be the time to call out what you want to handle, and propose new stuff and discuss the 'sections' above in terms of viability and whatnot. I'd like to have this set down pretty good by the end of the week at the latest.

Again, I'll wait for those of you who are interested to confirm before I add your name to the list. I'll update it as often as I can.

Current Staff
TheMumm - Layout, Editor-in-Chief
htj - Copy Editing, Tactica, Fluffman

I think this is an excellent idea and could really help introduce the best of dakka to newer users and help summarize and organize things for the established users.

I can see it taking a considerable amount of work to pull off. I'd be willing to help out from time to time, but looking at your categories I don't think I'm a good fit for any of your major groups (editors I guess).

Seems to me that organizationally, the Mods of these sections on dakka might be a good place to start, not that they do all the work... But I imagine they all have a good handle on their sections & know what's going on, who's hot, who are good resource people or who might have new or innovative ideas. You certainly don't want this to be a top-down operation... but they may give you some quick guidance that will get the ball rolling quickly.

Definately. Bottom line is, we all have lives and hobbies of our own. I don't expect (in the slightest) for this to take any kind of precendence over what people already are spending their precious leisure time on (like their own painting)! I can't claim to have sterling intentions myself; While I love the hobby, the true value of this project to me is portfolio population. I've dabbled in "extra-curricular" projects before (most notably an Eve Online podcast), and they prove to make an excellent addition to the fun stuff. I haven't had a chance to do some just-for-fun creative design, and this retail stuff I do for a living is starting to get to me, and I see myself becoming a mindless retail drone if I'm not careful and don't start doing something else in the meantime.

More than anything, though, this is supposed to be fun. Even if we can't make our monthly 'deadlines', it doesn't matter -- so long as we are all working on it and at least making progress, I'll be a happy Mumm, and everyone will get a cool little e-zine to show for it.

Hey Mumm, this is a list I pulled together a little while ago and then linked to the OP of my main blog. I pass it out to newbies when i think of it. It's NOT exhaustive or complete... but it's a good start.

Gitsplitta's threads that make you go "Wow!":
Fist list: threads that inspired me when I first got to dakka (mostly).

OH, and if you see a thread you'd like to feature, I'd be happy to write an introduction to it of sorts... Perhaps we can do a monthly feature entitled "Threads that make you go "Wow!" where we take a thread, write an intro, interview the author and then feature it in the monthly. (not a big interview, just a question or two about their motivation or methods)

Not entirely sure. Was hoping for at least 5, 7 to be safe.

That sounds like a good number. Hopefully we'll get some more people willing to jump in soon. So, what kind of size are we looking at here, in terms of page numbers? What kind of word count are we looking at for individual articles? As soon as I get a chance I'll cherry pick some bat-reps and have a go at dressing them up for print, just as an exercise in theory at this point.

EDIT: Also, do you think it might be a good idea to add 'help wanted' or some such to the thread title? See if we can rustle up a few more interested folks?

Excellent.

And in terms of page numbers, I'm really not sure at this point. Figure 1000 words per article, minimum, I suppose. I'll have a better idea when I have some copy to work with and start putting images in and working on layout.

I figure we can steer clear of contests for now, but look more to general quality rather than 'is it better than...'
I say as long as it's written with college-level english (and by that I mean, good grammar, no run ons, etc.), we can include it.

This is a brilliant idea. I think however that you shouldn't be too ambitious with the size of this as it will be easier to put together and will be less likely to fall apart because of RL commitments.

It might be a good plan for everyone involved to have the opportunity to do more than one task so that they are able to take over from somebody else if they disappear. Does that make sense? I'm not at my most eloquent right now...

I've done proof-reading work in the past and wouldn't mind helping out with that. It's been a while since I've written anything substantial, but I might be able to bang out the occassional article if given an assignment. All depends on my current free-time, but let me know and I'll be happy to help.

And definitely make it Dakka-centric as opposed to GW/PP-centric; there's plenty of great games and miniatures companies (I'm lookin' at you Cy!) out there that have a home here on Dakkadakka.

I am currently dealing with the seething mass of humanity that is High School, but I love the sound of this! I would be interested in doing short stories as well, or possibly write articles involving work here from Dakka. This is by no means a confident statement of continuous work (I do have 7 classes), but would be glad to pull my weight if it comes to that. Shoot me a PM if you need work done, I'll see what I can do.
Also, if you're worried about me not being able to handle these things, I have had a consistent 4.0 for 4 years and counting.

This sounds like a great idea! How about some kind of battle reports section as well? People could submit links to their own battle reports, and you could choose one which is the most aesthetically pleasing and well written?

Also, how about a 'featured blog' of the month? There is a massive blogging community out there, with some pretty impressive blogs that many people are unaware of.

Just some thoughts, good luck with the project I for one would be very interested in seeing how it turns out!

I've been wanting to do an interactive game magazine for a while now but didn't know where to start .. so if you need help let me know.. I'm a web designer and can do all that kind of of stuff.

Might be worth it to look into Apple's new Newstand app that's coming in iOS 5, that's coming in like a week or so.. supposedly you make your digital magazine and people can subscribe for a price (or free hopefully), and they get the new issue automagically downloaded to their device when it's ready to go.

I dunno how to handle Android devices though, since I don't have one.

I think it would be good to do a month in review for the news, but worthwhile new release kind of stuff, not the "OMG GW is gonna because they did (insert dumb marketing idea here)" megaposts. And other stuff like painting contests, new articles people make, highest voted gallery pics, etc.

I'd be more than happy to help out. I've got a creative writing degree and a fairly solid english A level (with a few stories lurking on my laptop - some even finished ).
I've got a lot of personal projects on my plate at the moment though. I would like it to include the more 'Specialist Games' articles like the WD of old...here's some regular titles and suggestions (apologies if already mentioned)...

Gitatorial - The Editorial Section - An introduction to the edition and other random musings about Dakka. Needs a picture of an Ork Newspaper Editor, with cigar
Shiny 'tings - A brief round up of the new releases or what's new to Dakka.
Dakka Approved - House rules that don't suck. Campaigns, new units etc
Overwatch - Thread spotting. A brief piece covering a thread or two, maybe a PM interview with the member repsonsible and links to other threads from Dakka.
They said what? - A small box with quotes of the month from Dakka members via submission (not that kind) or vote.
Game Face - Tactics, army lists (competitive/themed).
Warzone - No not the game - just another title for 'Battle Report'...
Retrospektive - A place where we can look over great games that were - basically a brief nostalgia section and where you may find the rules etc...
Confrontation! - A small section highlighting the more robust discussions that frequent Dakka (if they need highlighting?)...
Dakkafold - A pretty picture of a pretty mini (or few) submitted to Dakka, old and new - perhpaps a little piece on it/them.
Writer's Bloc - A short story section.

That's just a few off the top of my head. My main suggestion would be it's got be organised just like a magazine. So an editorial/proof reader section, graphic design/layout, writers organised into their subjects (at least what they're most likely to write about) etc...

I can see choice of content being tough - there's a lot happening on Dakka. Perhaps after a 'test run' or two, or three, we could get a sticky thread up? It's going to take a lot of organisation for sure but I'd love it if the Dakka community could pull it off. I suggest monthly or a larger bi-monthly edition.

PM me if you think you can use me

Oh wow, what a surge of interest! This is making me confident that we can make this thing a reality. OK, to make a start I'm going to temporarily appoint myself as submissions editor until I die or you find someone better. Hope I'm not stepping on your toes here, TheMumm.

Please can anyone interested in submitting fiction, battle reports, articles and opinion pieces, tacticas, or any other miscellanea please send me a PM with a link to, or sample of, their work.

Something short would be best as I've only so much free time I can dedicate to this, but links to existing work would do as well. In terms of fiction, a 200 word sample would be just about perfect.

@Odd One Out:

Woo! Someone has sigged me! I'm quite pleased now

*Back On Topic*
I'd be up for contributing in some way, perhaps writing something etc. No experience in any form of journalism but I enjoy writing, and I think I can dedicate some time after work to work on something, providing this is going to be monthly...

Also, what about having a 'Dakkanaut of the Month' article, where we have a 1-page interview with a randomly chosen dakka user, bit of a bio, ask about their wargaming/real-world stuff etc etc?
Maybe impose some limits, like must have over x number of posts etc etc to be considered for selection or something?

That is actually a nice idea, it would be a nice addition to get to know the more well posted users on dakka a bit better.

How about a piece highlighting one of the smaller miniature/scenery/base etc companies each issue?
I've found so many I wasn't aware of via Dakka.

Ok. Holy

I go to class one evening and come back and there's... this. lego, thanks a bunch for moving us man, seems to have worked!

Everyone Else - Thank you so much for the great responses. Call this the official project green light. I'll be at work all day today, so I'll be reading through your guys' responses and suggestions and getting some notes together when I've got the downtime. I'll probably lurk most of the day too, and tonight put up some more concrete information and update the staffing list. I wish I had the time right now!

I dig the crap out of 'The Dakka Digest'. How's about a Nurgle-Themed cover for the first issue?

See you all tonight.

Yes! I had a good idea that people like!
In all seriousness, however, I feel like we're making progress. I'm in school now, but I'll post a few short stories I've been writing later. As to the Nurgle-themed cover, how about that fat Greater Daemon from forgeworld with a Santa hat and a bag? Would be a great cover for December.

To address a technical problem, will the magazine be sent straight to subscribers? Or should we set up a blog with a link, possibly under an account for the magazine, and send out PMs to herald the magazine's release?

One other thing... I know there are issues with interactive PDFs on iPads anyway, where links or inDesign button objects won't work... I think right now the only way to really do a real interactive PDF is to build your own app that will allow all those PDF things to work. But I think just out of the box, Apple wants PDFs to be read-only. I think Adobe has some tools to help but they want ya to pay extra for em (after already charging like $2000)

Interactive PDFs are best done through HTML anyway at which point they cease to be PDFs (an interactive PDF is effectively just a slow running web page). The formats kind of a tablet gimmick that doesn't really have a niche.

Another brief check in on the pdf front;

They're most likely going to be web-optimized pdfs in the same vein that I generate here at work when we send out our fliers. Probably in Acrobat 9 to ensure that anyone can read them. While we're at it, I'll probably also generate a print-ready version for funsies and resolution nuts (like me).

If you like I guess I could kind of do a gallery spotlight. Picking out a few subjects whether they be painted exceptionally well or have tons of character with a theme to kind of make up for it. Kind of what I was hinting to on the first page, kind of lost this when it got moved.

Basically it would be talking briefly about the subject itself with perhaps a brief interview with the painter (techniques, intention, thoughts, what they'd do next time, tips, etc) sort of keeping it to a minimum of two to three subjects (one must be absolutely stunning of course), without dragging on too long. Perhaps have the background of the section a sort of faded collage of the voted best images as well, but not if it makes it too busy. It could also occasionally focus on larger projects as well such as squads, armies or crews.

Either way I wish you all the best with this.

I would love to write for this. Especially interested in writing a column, if you have room for that sort of thing. I consider myself a fairly good writer, and I'm part of a very active and colorful gaming group (CLAN BOOZEHAMMER!), that I think would provide very decent anecdotes and commentary on war gaming as a whole.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but a "Noob Corner" section could definitely be used.

- Explanation of the focus of all the armies (why should you pick them, what are their playstyles, brief fluff explanations).
- Cheapest ways to get into warhammer (and how to avoid getting ripped off, "pro painted" comes to mind)
- Stripping
etc. etc.

It's all general information that most people already know, but threads are popping up all the time asking those same questions. I figure having that kind of information would help people stay informed and prevent them from asking the same questions over and over again.

Edit - Another idea could be revolve around selling figures and the expected values.

Hmm, interesting ideas Necroshea. I like the idea of having a breadth of articles to cater to different experience levels. I doubt we'll ever see the questions end, but it would at least give us a place to point people.

OK, I'm going to start putting up some jobs and tasks that I could use help with. If anyone wants to take them on, just post in this thread or PM me. You won't be permanently draughted, just do as much as you are inclined to. If you are, indeed, so inclined.

Wanted - Thread Wranglers
Anyone willing to keep a track of particularly interesting or original threads? OK, anyone willing to do that and then write up brief summaries with quotes of interest from the threads? This is something that people could pick up any time a thread particularly interested them. Hobby related only, of course, no OT thanks.

Wanted - News and Rumours Tsar
If you're particularly good at keeping track of the news and rumour mill, knocking together a quick run down of what's new in a month (commentary on reliability optional ) and sending on to me would contribute to, what I hope to be, a key permanent section in the mag. Remember, we're just as interested in what the smaller game and mini companies are doing as we are in GW/PP/FOW and the like.

Most likely I'm going to think of more later. This by no means represent the extent of the input I'm looking for, and if you have a suggestion or want to submit something you feel would make for good reading, please drop me a PM or make a suggestion here. Thanks to everyone who's already got involved, even if just to provide encouragement!

I wouldn't even know where to start regarding thread summaries and rumor mills. It's so filled with subjective material, as well as outright falsehoods, I'd feel hesitant to commit any of it to something people might read and think of as truth.

This is an excellent idea. Certainly something I would read. Ive only just got back into the hobby within the last year after nearly a 10 years! Only in the last 6 months have I been part of the online community, so not sure how I could contribute. As TheMumm has already mentioned it will be difficult to get this kind of idea off the ground when using personal time as obviously people have other commitments. Myself I do a blog site with two friends and that at times has been a squeeze t oget the site updated. I would love to as this is an excellent idea, I used to do the student magazine back in university and I loved every minute of it!

To get an idea of what I would like to see in a hobby magazine.

Tutorials - painting, modelling, converting, terrain making, etc

Tip of the month - tips and tools of the trade from how to strip miniatures to homemade tolls for sculpting

Showcases - as Legoburner has mentioned painted and converted miniatures off the site

Latest news and rumours

Game tactics and in house rule suggestions

Thats my two cents

From the reactions to this thread I see that we have a unique chance here to work with a crew of professionals in their trade from all over the world on a project with our shared passion as subject.

Because of this I do think it would be a shame if we weren't to maintain certain production standards.
Yes we will be a fan-run done-on-personal-time project, but it shouldn't look like a fan-run done-on-personal-time project.
Professional writing, professional design, professional photography & illustration; I have seen reactions from people in all these fields, and it would be a shame not to tap into all this knowledge.

No cringeworthy error-ridden fanfic, no 'lol I just have my crappy phone cam' photography.
We need tough editors & a tough art-director.

Great ideas, well though out, varied and interesting.
I'd suggest for the batrep section getting people to submit their batreps but laying down some criteria. Quality varies hugely from what I've seen and having a set formula for showing them off/reporting on them would help immensely I think.
Perhaps, X minimum amount of terrain, 3 color painted armies min, good and varied selection of photos showing both "action" shots and tactical overviews, editor could pm both players to do a mini interview with them asking for their pre and post battle thoughts/reactions. Something akin to the articles in WD.
Could also do a "what would you do" mini piece, where a particular turn or incident is pulled out of the batrep and setup as a stand alone. Then the editor or someone else could play it out as they think would be best. Just to give people other ideas/show good moves/bad moves.
I accept the minimum terrain/paints thing might sound a touch elitist but one must bear in mind its a once a month publication, quality needs to be maintained and theb etter things look the more interesting they will be.
Wouldnt mind looking after that aspect of things, batrep section is one of my favourites on here.

Not at all. This is a publication, and publications have production values, simple as that. I'll even go further and say again that people will have to be required to maintain a certain standard in batrep photography. No blurry/low-res/washed out/underlit pictures. I don't want to have to squint to see whether that black blob is a Rhino or a Daemon Prince.

People can post unpainted, underterrained batreps with incomprehensible picturesw in the batreps section to their heart's content.

I saw something like this done before at an old website I used to post on. The categories of magazine from what I recall (I contributed a few times) essentially boiled down to:

1. The News page. Rumours took up too much space, and the conjecture often caused controversy. There are so many smalltime companies, that news of their releases over a month or two was pretty much guaranteed to fill up the necessary space. Heck, I have a favorites list of about thirty of them that I check fairly regularly.

2. A product review with photographs. The flip side of paying attention to smaller companies is the often lack of customer service/product quality. This was a good way to advertise decent products.

3. Army/Model showcase. This works well on Dakka. Get someone to scour the gallery for the prettiest pictures. Attach the username of the person who did it, and let them bask in the adulation of their peers.

Those were the essentials that ran every issue. However, depending on what had been contributed, it also ran:-

4. Army building/Tactics workshops, usually from regular tournament goers

5. Conversion guides: anything from a clever kitbash, to using a GW kit, and one or two kits from smaller companies, and showing the results. Good photographs required.

6. Fanfiction.

7. Written articles:- Bit like Jervis's standard bearer, but usually with an actual point.

8. New model/unit rules

It's broadly similar to what's been posted already, but I would suggest following the pattern of not forcing yourself to have one of everything before you publish an issue. As long as you have the top three, and a pick and mix of the latter five, you have a good issue.

Don't worry. The section will be a news section first and foremost, rumours only being put in for slow news months. I imagine there'll normally be enough news to cover it though, and if and when a rumour is presented it will be given no weight at all.

@happygolucky
I'd welcome any submissions of batreps. They've proven to be a popular subject, so I can't promise all of them will be published. The more professionalism involved the better - painted minis, painted scenery, quality photography, and illustrative graphics are all key as to whether a report will be run or not.

OK, some more news for potential contributors.

Dakka Digest Submissions Email Address
I've set up a temporary email address for submissions. Please note that I'll only be able to check this about once a day, so any suggestions for a column or feature would be better sent to me by PM. This address is for whole pieces of work only.

Wanted - Non-40K writers
I've had a veritable deluge of offers to write 40K based stuff, which makes sense as it's probably the most popular game on the site. However, I'd like to get a bit more of a diverse representation of games, so anyone who wants to write something about another games system, please drop me a PM.

Wanted - Hobby Tutorials
If you're something of a wizard at any aspect of the hobby, or have come up with some clever little technique or trick, then let me know! This can be a one-off, a series, or a regular thing.

Absolutely. You want to write up an article on Bloodbowl? Send me a quick PM with an idea of what you think would be good.

Wow this looks like a great idea! I'll gladly help out in any way possible. I believe I'm a pretty good writer. Only problem is I am very new to 40K.... I have only played FOW until now. But as long as somebody points me towards an article to do a write up on I think I could do it. Or if you wanted a newbies take on things. I've got some time on my hands. But if you guys are all full up that's fine too! Either way I look forward to watching this idea grow!
EDIT: PM me if you have any questions for me. I can write on pretty much anything plus my college writing teacher wants the class to do 10 writing projects outside of class. Sooooo I would definitely get the work done. If you go outside of tabletop and do movie or video games (the games based off 40K and other tabletops ) then I can also write reviews. I think my biggest hang up is lack of TT gaming experience... But if I can get past that I'd love to be a part!\

Ben

Hmmm, are you implying that something like video games would be reviewed? Might want to stray away from those, game and movie reviewing is already an over saturated market.

Regarding bloodbowl, I personally have no experience playing it. I've been invited to leagues but I have no team, or models for that matter. I've played the game (which I just bought), but I'm hardly qualified to write about it yet.

I'm trying to get a good idea of how far outside of tabletop are we trying to go. I guess I'm still wondering what is the broad scope and purpose of the project.

This is such a great idea Mumm and htj.

I would offer my input, but due to uncertain work commiments (ie i have no idea when im working or if i will have free time) and my lack of writing skill, the only thing i can offer is appreciation (and expectation, but that comes later )

Still interested in helping out... but I don't need to be a regular. Maybe use this thread or another when you're looking for "independent" submissions of one type or another.

No, by other game systems I mean Warmachine, FoW, Malifaux, etc., not video games. Trying to keep this about tabletop gaming at this point, it should provide plenty of material. If we get really starved of content later we could theoretically look into related video games or roleplaying, but that's not the prefered situation.

Honestly; I'd say not far. Review games related to the hobby perhaps (like Space Marine, that new upcoming Warmachine video game, the new WHFB DOTA game, etc.) and maybe some news on whats happening with those games in a little column, but thats it. Should be about Hobby gaming in general and all things dakka!

I also had an idea; why not do a player of the month column? Find a player here on Dakka that you particularly like (whether it be from personal experience, like their advice, whatever) and do a small little interview with them, like where they game, where they're from, favorite rulesets, armies, etc. ? It gets the community even more involved even if they don't submit articles and things.

Good Evening, Gentlemen.

I'm going to make the official CALL FOR CONTENT right now.

Creative Fiction

content
5000 word limit per entry, if you're writing it for us. At first I was questioning what other limitations to set on this; and I think I've made a good decision: any science fiction or fantasy, or otherwise fantastical-setting stories will be accepted. Obviously, though, we do expect to have quite a few themed fiction entries. All good writing is welcome.

Good grammar and proper spelling is a huge must here. I doubt we really want to sift through stories that are unreadable through poor sentence structure and improper capitalization.

content editor
I'm also looking for someone to offer their services to actively peruse the fiction forum and find some gems. When you do, get in touch with the author of the fiction and ask them if they would allow their work in our hands. After that's together, throw them into .docs.

Artwork
PM Me links to your stuff as well as a statement of permission to use it in the Dakka Digest. Mind you, I might not use it, but I'll hold onto them all in case I wish to do so in the future. I'll post some Categories of what I'm looking for:
-Warhammer Universe
-Warhammer 40k Universe
-Warmahordes Universe

Other cool art is appreciated as well, of course! The higher the resolution the better. Ideally, 300 dpi. I will NOT stretch images beyond their original size (I refuse piexellation).

That said, more than anything, we need a cover image. And Ork would be best, but I'll accept any other pieces. Precedence will be given to images that are close to whatever size I end up making this thing.

For other editiorial Positions, I need to know who's going to handle Painting and Modelling, Battle Reports (WFB, W40k, WM/H). PM me and let me know.

Tomorrow after I go through my PMS I'm going to draft up project times lines, goals and the first progress report, and distribute them to the staff and here.

Mumm, I'd love to get in on the fiction writing. I have a lengthy thread in the dakka fiction section already but I'd love to write something new. Here is my Latest Post. If there is an extra editor around I could definitely benefit from some assistance but I'd be able to make monthly contributions.

Let me know Mumm! Thanks.

Since this is about wargaming community, trading online is a big part especially since most people are looking to save a bit of money. I wouldn't mind doing a piece on general trading tips and pointers of sites like dakka swap, bartertown and also how to protect yourself from being scammed.

Oh, this online magazine is a great Idea.
I have an Idea for a new section/article slot.
Dakka Old Gold (for want of a better title)- This will basically point out really old/forgotten threads that have great content and are too awesome to miss out on. I will be happy to find some of these for the magazine.
What do you guys think?

Good call, but put a disclaimer in so people do not go threadomancing everything out of the archives. I have some older threads I know of that are pretty sick as well.

This sounds like a good idea. My main recommendation would be to focus on substance over spin/splash/fluff articles. Perhaps make the magazine bi-monthly (or tri-monthly) to ensure quality of content. Anyway here are some of my ideas:

• Detailed Battle Reports (army profiles, map diagrams, participant feedback). Try to have battle reports for systems other than GW. Perhaps source battle reports from VASSAL to make this a bit easier.
• Get someone like Kid Kyoto to do a monthly retro article.
• Modelling/painted tutorials. Preferably ones on conversions, tips and tricks etc.
• Perhaps an editorial/analysis article on the current world of miniatures (will need to be written by not just anyone but someone who knows their stuff).
• Reposting of some of the funnier 40k internet memes, comics etc.
• Reviews on small company products (chapter house, scribor etc).
• Reposting of quality rules from the proposed rules forums (perhaps even include analysis and quick vassal battle reports using the proposed rules)
• War gaming strategy/tactics articles (try to include articles for non GW systems). Also include pictures/diagrams, quick vassal battle reports, etc.

I recommend this but i will also add
• A section detailing new lore and good player threads to look at.
• A help section for new people
• A reading of messages sent to you. That would be awesome.
• Modelling Showcase. Show all the big armies that are sent to you.
• Random Dakka Dakka- put in things that are hilarious that we talk about.

That's because every project needs a leader.

In this case, Mumm should select and designate Section Editors, and those people are responsible for each month's content and cleanup. Then the Lead Editor puts the magazine together.

Trust me, it is the only way it'll work, and it avoids burn-out.

Something of an apology.

About a month ago now, a length of time which has shocked me in it's ability to pass at a breakneck speed, certain changes in my life made it difficult to make time for this. Things have been pretty hectic and I found it difficult to make time for this project and, well, time makes fools of us all. Things have calmed down a bit now and I can make more time to include Dakka in my day.

But. I can't really commit to this project any more, so I'm officially pulling the plug on my involvement. I'm sorry to all those people that I didn't reply to; I simply wasn't here. Everything I received I've handed over to TheMumm, so hopefully nothing will be in vain. I hope that everyone who showed such enthusiasm for this project can carry it to fruition.

So too all involved - sorry, and thank you, and good luck.

I trimmed down your post a bit so I would not take that much room with my reply. I have been lurking quite a bit and wanted to become more active (aside from the P&M Blog I am starting this week) and I would be willing to assist this publication as a content editor. My background in the field of writing is quite extensive for my age, I started off with short stories and continued on to be a researcher at the local University here (I was a dredger, meaning I went through a ton of empirical work on a daily basis). I also assist individuals working on research papers for graduate school, and am a post graduate student myself. Right now I am studying to be an English teacher (I actually want to teach creative writing), so this would give me some interesting experience. My grammar can be rough sometimes, but I could bring stuff to the table.

Also have an idea, since I am new to the table top gaming community (and 40k) I could write about the problems I am running into in regards to the game. That type of stuff. Just PM me and let me know.

Edit: I am pretty new to the 40k universe, so I would not be able to write anything devoted to that content in particular but I could theoretically come up with some short stories and such for this as well.

Edit 2: This post is somewhat rough due to my lack of sleep, my bad.

I'm interested in helping out, although I just saw this today.

I can (and have) written some tactical articles in the past. I can certainly wax eloquent on matters more abstract in the form of an opinion essay. I may also try my hand at short fiction.

I'd be interested in helping either in creating content or helping to edit other works (less proofreading and more style/content).

I don't know who is currently in charge.

Well I see this idea has kind of stalled

Anywho, I got bored again and thought I'd do some mock covers/content pages - I figured it might give us some impetus

Of course art would be a major thing, there's loads of people on deviantart who would do commissions - or else I'm sure there's some very talented people knocking about here who'd do it for free

My thoughts were the logos at the top could change depending on what systems were covered in the issue. It'll be pretty easy to replicate some of the articles that get posted and wot-nots. I thought "Freebooter" was a good title - not sure if its been used elsewhere?
