Short back story:
Volra is a death ice world. Volrians have decided that due to the lack of care and support from the Imperium to delcare their world a free world and set out to conqure the entire system from the Imperium.

This is a work in progress thread. I welcome all sorts of commits and ideas to expand on my army. Please note i have just started and hope to see this through. Perhaps even a few battle reports while the army is being painted will make it on here.


Anyways to get things started here are two headless models i have painted that i want your guys and ladies review on.

That is very detailed and quite nice looking camo pattern. I'm really impressed, how long did it take you to paint them?

It took me about 30 minutes to paint the one on the left and 15 minutes on the one on the right. Thanks for the compliment!

Alright, i will post a tut on my camo and see what you foks think.

So first thing is first.

Base coat the model. I do this in a fortress grey and i use a large brush, you can use a base coat of chaos black and then drybush this grey coat on, but i just do grey with a back ink wash. No matter what this is the first step.

So the next step is to apply a chaos black ink wash to the model. For this step stick your brush in the ink and then in a cup of clean water. Apply this to the just base coated model. This will be very black and spread it around as much and as fast as you can. Also stick your brush in the water again and cover the ink again to thin it more so you just get a dark grey.
It should look like this and dark light the model. Ya irony!

After we have covered the model in the chaos ink and make sure we really get those wrinkles in the clothes to pop we gunn highlight! yay now i know i am not the best painter out there, but this hopefully gets the job done.
Dry Brush skull white over the model. Make sure to avoid the wrinkles and resses the model has, this really pulls out a nice shadow effect.

Next up we need to deal with the armor and "gloves" and shin guards. To do this we simply paint them all chaos black. Neat right? NOW WE CAN GET STARTED ON THE CAMO what you been waiting for.. that or like to read... but thats just crazy.

Next step is operation cow.
Your goal here using both skull white and chaos black is to spot the model so he looks like a cow! damn near want to eat him is what he should look like.

Now the white spots in my photo may look large for the model, but trust me it all works out when you finally mix your camo colors.

Next up is what i call spot mating on the camo. You will use your secondary color to match other colors. So for the armor which is base black, and we used a skull white on it we will now use the fortress grey (this matches the clothes and is the entire purpose of this) use the grey to highlight, wrap around or spot in side or run next to the white. Do it however you like, use it to reduce spot sizes and give spots more notice. Also do this for the clothes as they were based grey, with chaos black spots so use your skull white to the same methods. What you should get is a primative camo that most people find acceptable.

And here is the last step that makes this paint seem better. I call it snowing. What you do is take your brighest part of your camo in my case skull white and dot large empty spaces of the camo. Say you have a black and grey but there is a big cap between them or you have large patch of one color. You stick some very tiny dots of a different color in there. Now i only do 1 dot color because i have 100 models or so to paint, but for the more inclined and clinicaly insane you can do all your camos colors dotted to a okish custer ****.
Anyways here is a finish product and i hope you like the tutorial. Tomorrow! i plan on doing a Valkerie.

I am going to use the full camo units as grunts and sargeants. I will use the non camoed clothes as officer and a command positions. What do you guys think of this?

That's pretty neat camo. What happened to their gun barrels, are you going to convert them to autoguns?

There gun barrels are removed. I am thinking of having my own fluffy ness where the army uses a short carbine auto las shell. Think laser and bullet mixed. The gun would be fluff wise designed to shoot through astartes armor. IE Hot shot las guns, but for all game play purposes they are normal las guns.

Awesome paintwork, you're inspired me to give the camo a go for my Gue'Vesa. But if the camo takes longer than the non-camo, surely the officers and sergeants would be the ones with it? to make them look more important? just a thought.

Higher importance means you don't ware grunt clothes as of grunts ware camo. officers would ware nice fatigues that wouldn't have a pattern I consider sergeants of grunt value and consider officers to be command platoons and of the sort. Thus they will just ware a plain fatigue with perhaps a gold trim on the clothing jacket and cuffs of the sleeves.

Thats fair enough, i just thought the officers with the money would buy better armour than their grunt counterparts and camo is far better than plain fatigues. But then, your rrmy, its up to you

The officers would have camoed armor indeed, but theire clothes underneath would be just simple and rich like clothing. i do agree with you completely that they would have nicer things.

Small update my heads from pig iron have shipped and I will be headIng home soon and my guard are getting into a fight against a scarb farm wraith wing! My guard will be riding in on 7 Valkyries! Haha it looks to be a good fight between my buddy zid and I! He is gunna go a battle rep I will link the rep for you guys. I don't know about you but I am hoping to have a valk done and a squad of vets at least done till I get my heads and static snow! Bringing out the paint an getting busy! Did I use enough exclamation points?

New update lads. i have a 3/4 finished Valkyire. it has the camo done to the body i need to paint the guns and the cockpit. I need advice which kind of glow should i do it? i was thinking of doing a bright blue gem effect, but i have the colors needed to do a red. Let me know what you think.

Wow, at first I didn't like the camo, but now I think it turned out really well! The guards men practically blend into the Valkyrie. Well done!

These look great. The disruptive pattern is incredible. I may borrow your technique in different colors when I do my Gue'vesa counts-as Kroot.

Borrow away its a simple and easy to reproduce camo. Its no gold deamon but sure is a table top!

*If you happen to notice that his pants are not camoed its not a mistake. He is a officer and thus only has a camo coat and armor as that is his feild gear, but his fatigues are not camoed so he will appear more swanky.*

Just the thought of a cross-eyed, dual-wielding commissar is pretty damn funny.

Small update following cadets! i am heading for a background change to califourina! I am gunna visit some family; mostly my sister who i have not seen for year and a half. I know what your thinking this guy is such a git to his family. Sadly i was so desperate i decided that i will be bringing my paints and a valkyire and some infintry. I am there for five days and i am hoping to get all of the done. Fun question that i wanted to ask everyone was what would oyu think if i used bozokas as meltas? har har. It kinda fits with the fluff of my army and the actually heavy wep bozooka unit i would mod out to have a really big fricking bozooka or simply a bfb. With interesting catch phrases like thata bfb! we are not quite sure what it does, but we are absolutly sure he shouldnt have it.

For those of you that are keeping with me i am now in cali with a nice change of background. Take a look at the photo lets talk about painting in peice! also while stubeling through ebay because i had a few dollars to spend i found grav chute packs. I am thinking of adding them to my guard bringing them that much closer to a eylsian rip off, but i think it will be interesting with pig iron heads and forge world back packs it looks to be interesting! let me know what you think, if i should go through with it or not.

Camo patterns looking good. Bazooka Melta Guns would have to be carefully defined to keep them from looking like regular Missile Launchers.

Sorry for the lack of picture updates. I am going to tailor a 2000pts guard list and hopefully paint that by the end of this month. May the gods be kind. Here is my painting goal.

7-8 valkyires
50 guardsmen oh how vets fill up the list
and then i have about 250 pts to play around with i am thinking a platoon of troops and i thinking of maxing out their heavy weapons. Let me know what you guys think. And would writting on fluff be worth it because would anyone read it?

Sorry for the lack of updates. School started again and i am been rather busy with that! the weekend is coming though . Thier is hope for more painting then! Anways here is the update
I got my creed, Kell and two lord commisars in and 3 regimental advisors and i got about 30 guard guys done. Built that is painting is another story.

BOOZOKAMELTAS! What you think? i think they are way cooler then normal meltas.

Vlorians come from a death ice world where even the wind can freeze a man in his tracts on a stormy day. The Imperium has turned a cold shoulder on the Vlora and left it die by xenos hands of the filfthy Orks, and Tryanids.
If it not for the awe inspiring Volrian troops the planet and sector would have been anything, but annhilated. The planet itself even seemed to pic the side of the Volrians as cold storms often struck soon after a xenos encounter.
That or the world is doing what is known best for, being a death ice world. Ice would collaspe, cold winds would swoop in freezing a entire war into something of a artistic statue.

Traveling by land is near impossible on Volra because the ice and snow would clog any engine, slip any wheel and make any track stick. Even the skies were unforgiving as water vapor would freeze in high speed winds forming
razor winds. The ice so sharp it flay a man in a matter of seconds. The only thing that could survive such conditions were either the native life of the skies with skin so thick they could absorb bolter rounds easily with out even a flinch.
The Valkyrie was the only choice of transportation left, and thus forced the Vlorian forces to become masters at the art of flying and falling with grace.

Due to the cold shoulder of the imperium, Volrians annouced that they shun the Emperor for his crulty and ignorance of their exsistance dispite deep faith in him. Volrians declared independence from the Emperor and that they were their own nation.
Soon after declaring independence Volrians marched out to conqure the sector of cold worlds and conqured the worlds became. Most worlds agreed to join with no blood shed and founded a system of checks and balences creating the Volrian empire.
The Volrians were known for interalerance of different religions and allowed many to mix as long as the people did of what they were asked. This caused chaos to easily step in, but due to the open and willingness of religion in the sector
any cults that were formed were easily discovered and destoryed instantly with the full force of a regiment. 10,000 troops to smite only a few, but this method insured that the empire was not weak.

The troopers on this project thread are the Volrian First nick named Stone Cold. This is because like a typical Volrian they cared little for a fallin comrade if anything that pushed them farther towards victory.
The price of blood was cheap to them and the price of command was priceless. Volrian's do listen to their superiors and will excute any command with flawless grace, but they are not afriad to question orders
and even refuse orders that they deem completely redlicious, however, almost no order falls into that list except for something of "jump into the valcano to destory the emeny base." and the expected refusal
of this order is because "Sir, their is no volcanos on this world!"

At least thats how it works.

That's much better than anything I could have come up with. Also, how did you make the meltzookas?

Small update! I painted a seargent Harker.

Zooka Melta is easy to make.
Requires a Melta tip, Grenade Launcher and a missle launcher.
Cut the ends off the missle launcher down to the support beam on the under side.
That makes it shorter.
Then with the ammo pack glue it on the back and put the melta tip on the front glued. Use my picture as a simple reference should be easy to
replicate.

now, i honestly think you have a very good camo scheme right here.. buut my 2 critisisms, is that i think that the gun would look better in a solid color, just to draw it away from the guys, and on the valk, i feel like your camo blobs should be bigger than what they are, only because im getting more of a scale feeling (unless that is what you are going for!) but dont worry, they look fine as is.. just my 2 cents, p.s. im subbed

Soild guns, are not a bad idea. I wanted a busy feel with the camo and thats why i did the guns i will do a trooper with a solid gun and post a comparison and ask for votes. As for the Valk i feel i could go alittle larger, but i am shooting for a camo that blends in a snow storm.
Any other comments/ critisism? i love review.

so far its all fine, although i would test out the baking soda snow like in this picture - one of the snow bases i created.. it works nicely and it is very easy

Oh i like that alot! tell me how you did it. and does the baking soda do weird stuff?

nope, not at all! all it is is find a decent consistancy of pva, water, and baking soda, i went or a pasty feel, although i did put too much baking soda in mine, you want it to be wet and not look dry when your mixing it (if that makes sense), you could even do some painting on it if you want.. but here is a nice tutorial that shows basicaly the same thing that i did- http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=6 they used their own snow product, but if you interchange it for baking soda it will work just fine

At my local game store to represent the 25th anniversary of warhammer we are throing a 3000pt 1 apoc vechile tourny. My goal is to create a flying baneblade to stick with my guard. And no i will be doing something more complicated then buying a baneblade and sticking wings on it.

So this tread is going to take a turn for possibly the best or worst. I am going to create a super heavy vechile. At my local game store to represent the 25th anniversary of warhammer we are throing a 3000pt 1 apoc vechile tourny. My goal is to create a flying baneblade to stick with my guard. And no i will be doing something more complicated then buying a baneblade and sticking wings on it.

I think a flying Baneblade with organic wings could be hilarious. Especially if they are severely undersized.

Although, a flying baneblade could be relatively simple. Scrap the tracks, a jet assembly on the back and a flying base would be simple enough, and fairly effective.

At my local game store to represent the 25th anniversary of warhammer we are throing a 3000pt 1 apoc vechile tourny. My goal is to create a flying baneblade to stick with my guard. And no i will be doing something more complicated then buying a baneblade and sticking wings on it.

I think a flying Baneblade with organic wings could be hilarious. Especially if they are severely undersized.

Although, a flying baneblade could be relatively simple. Scrap the tracks, a jet assembly on the back and a flying base would be simple enough, and fairly effective.

I am planning on doing that but also thinning it down in the middle and most likely making it a storm lord 20(?) troop carrier as it fits with my army I am most likely going to have two cock pits on it as well.

I hope to end up fielding 6 valks and 3 vendettas, because lascannons are cool. Everything will be magnetised though.I'm not going to be taking any detpacksthough, so things could be different in terms of tactics. Six squads in valks, Command in vendetta with astropath and MoF, with suicide stormies.Just a question, how easy is it to assemble valks on a scale of 1-10?

No rules, but hoesntly if wanted to i just say it has skimmer rules for a extra 50pts but other wise it runs like a normal bane

You could just make it an anti-grav baneblade. Put some thrusters on it instead of tracks and make it hover slightly.

Very very cool indeed, I like the idea a lot. I can see what Rogue Wolves means, first thing that came to my mind though was the Cylon heavy raider. You should consider doing a troop transport version using the gorgon rules.

Loving the camo and the orange helm lenses. Not so sure about the flying baneblade. There's an earlier pic before the wings but with the thrusters attached, at that point I think you should have attached tracks and had a hot rod baneblade.

As for everyone who wonders at the cost forthe bane blade on stick it was a 100 dollars. 20 for modeling material and 80 for a new bane blade off eBay and I traded for the old busted valkyrie that went into.



Also air calv took first at a local tourny! I had the least amount of victory points but pulled a win 3 times in a row.
It was a 3000 apoc tourny I brought the bane blade on a stick and 9 valks and 60 vets and creed command squad. I fought vanilla marines with 13 las cannons and that land raider with 5 las cannons. I won with two objectives to none but 1670 kill points in my favor against my post of 1890.

Round two I fought ground guard with 4 len russes 1 auto cannon type two battle cannon an 1 demo cannon plus organs with yarik and iron hand striken and 3 chimeras and some heavy weapons teams. He was a slow player and trying to take care of a baby at the same time. We ended on turn two with a clear victory in my favor.



Round 3 I fought a deamons list 2hearalds one was skull taker with a8 crusher squad 15 plague dudes 10 pink horrors 20 demenattes 20 blood letters and a 999pt big bird we called it with toughness 8 and a 3++. Needless to say ignored it killed everything else and won with 9 kill PTs to 6.

They come from Pheobia a simple agri world. Since the world lacks sufficent material to wage war, by any means on it owns it adds to the dominion with some of the most fierce calvary. The people of Pheobia had a long folk tail of some enchanted cup, that should any warrior drink from it, his horse would grow wings, and he would become immortal. Of course with the tale their is a test to get the cup where the warrior, or warriors, would face the most disgusting and hideous monster in all of the legends. The beast has ears that could hear you coming from a nation away, and fangs that take your head clean off. Due to Pheobia's old way of seeing things they call the calvary units knights, and such and even wear old styled full plate steel armor. Although this armor offers limited protection, and is bulky, and hard to use compaired to mondern means; it has never affected the knights ability in combat. The knights of Pheobia, are just as agressive in a bar as they are in combat, and love a good old fashion laugh, the most classic is clapping to bowl haves to make horse sounds as they parade around drunk and foolishly singing folk tails. Every regiement of Volra loves to have them and hates them at the same time.

Not sure why you have a lack of comments here man, its looking really good! The camo scheme in general looks really good and that newer snow is good too. Personally i really like the chimera, It looks like its in the middle of a snow storm, very convincing. Commisar Roth is cool too, love the wings on the helmet!

super simple, skull white. But as for the actually coloring and what not, chaos black basecoat (makes a darkish white). After the basecoat, apply skull white, then i use a Devlin Mud wash fairly heavy to make sure he looks nice and muddy. That leaves a Tanish white, i then apply a drybrush layer of skull white after it all drys and it leaves a lovely white robe with shades.

I really dig the last commissar, very nice white cloths!

Lol looking at your camo always hurts my eyes after a while cormadepanda. I still like the larger blobs on the second one, but I think that's just personal preference now, they both look really good, It has definately helped to define the top one a lot more,

I go for the top one in this case, is a good compromise.

its really a table top tactic. If my opponet looks at them to long his eyes hurt and he cant focus and makes winning easier. Chuckels. Not really, but personal preference matters. So lets see small blobs is ok

Hey panda, sorry I missed your update. Manticore looks great. I still cant believe you have the patience for this camo scheme. How are you doing the snow? I want to do snow in a future project and cant get it right.

For me personaly Baking soda works well, plus it looks more realistic then some other alternitives

Firstly thanks i am glad you like the manticore.

Hey man its all good. Lets just say i love it to much to not keep doing it. Also for the snow i use Elmer's glue, White Paint Acrylic ($1 for 20ml type) and Baking soda. Now i the reason for the white paint is because baking soda oxidizes yellow. So unless you want the yellow snow mix in the paint. I like to do it so my basing mixture is dry that way i wont have shiney stripes or spots in the snow. And by dry i mean sticky, but not shiney. It will look like harden old snow or the snow i have. If you want fresher add water so its alittle smoother, this will generate a fresh poweder type look. Easy to do once you play with it. I will do a vid if you like.

Here are the 3 dudes finshed except for the visors. Since i mix my colors for the visors i like to do a large chunk at a time.

Alright mates sorry for the haulting progress. i am painting more after work today. Will finish this squad and base them. In news i ordered anvil bits that are intended for my orks, but may end up in my ig. We will see. In other news i also have 10 russes coming in.. Thats right.. 10...all battle cannon too. Gunna do some interesting conversions to them to keep up with my ig fluff(imperail truth to the true emperor). i am also going to start a fluff page for my ig. You guys are welcome to read it, i will post a link in a bit when i start it. Hope you guys had a good fourth, our firework show was nice.

Thanks, I offer up a challenge to my dakka followers and guess how many dots i put on my dudes! The squad is almost done, two meltas left.

Thanks i am actually slightly upset with the visors and will clean them up when i get home. If people are interested i will post a tut tonight on how i do my visors it is fairly simple and of course will work with any 3 color scheme.

Also left to paint - 3 Coborg Orygrans, 3-4 infantry squads, 1 squad of rough riders, 6 leman russes, 2 Valkyires, 2 Hell hounds and 2-4 chimeras... i forget how mandy i have. Tell me what you want to see.

Recent dot frezny finshed, his visor needs painted and as a result he got a group shot. Enjoy the blending that is caused by your eyes where you lose sight of one and gain another!

scope mag are anvil. Barrel is me and that is a FW pack, havent you noticed? there been like 30 guard with it on here.

This is mind blowing stuff, amazing work.
Only critisism, you have too many HQ units and I don't see one platoon (Unless your rolling with another codex?) of Infantry in there. Apart from that Lord Commissars are my favourite miniature in the whole 40k range so it is amazing to see what you did to them. I'm tempted to just start up another army. Nice fluff and Valkyries and love the Bommers.

I painted two vet squads, i do not use platoons because platoons wont fit into valkyires. As i been running air calv since early fifth, and now with sixth this army never finds anything willing to fight. :/ . However! your comment is very heart moving and appreicated. I know my lack of painted troops disapoints me as well and i am going to start a 3rd squad tonight.


On further note a old enemy is coming to this thread. Their number is great and their airplane has been shown.. its only time before battle report.

My word cormadepanda, since I came on here last you have done a staggering amount of dotty camo! I'm impressed! The leman russ looks like its almost a different type of camo? or was it just done with larger gaps between splodges? It look good though, alot kinder on the eyes =p

Good to see more infantry here, the yellow visors look nice too, were you thinking of having a color per squad or something? The orange still looks great I think.

Looking forwards to more, will have to try and check back more regularly.

I know that feel, i left your thread for some time came back and my jaw dropped. Also the yellow visor deal is a base coat for the orange visor. I could different colored visors i do it for hq's and such, i kind of wanted more a anonymous feel with my guard. The tank is the same cameo more or less. The Valks get a slightly different treatment in the sense the grey spots get surrounded in white causing them to pop up more and look more white/blendy, The tank didn't get that treatment leaving it less white. I do the white highlight cameo only to my filers, and the normal grey on my ground. If you dig around for my group shots you will see my ground is a different cameo. I was trying to think of a way to squad makers, but haven't come up with much. that said i am open to suggestions. Also i am writing fluff for the regiment as well cause i have no life :*(

Ah i see about the yellow visors now, sorry i understand now, yeah the whole faceless impersonal soldier vibe comes across very well, looks good. And ah yes, looking back I see what you mean about the slightly different camo patterns, I think my personal favourite is the air one, the version on your valks. I see what you mean, the white does help to blend it together nicely. Has there been any progress on the flying monster tank? (Sorry if i missed it, then again, with that thing it would be pretty hard to miss it completely!)

No actually that monster has suffered some real damage the past week and i going to have to fix it up fairly crazy like. It may get a entire revamp... my other nemesis is rising to the top however and sucking away time for my guardsmen. We will see.

Anyone, where can i find snow trees to buy. Good looking ones any recomendations? I need them for bases and such.

you could check woodland scenics, i dont know if they have snow trees, but they have tons of other trees so it doesnt hurt to look

Well Vik and Childe you have undoubtably fortified my efforts and heart in the paint. I will press onwards and finish. I need to think of a 2k point list for feast of blades...and must have it painted! i am close-ish to that goal!

sadly i dont speak german, and i struggle with english as it is. My father and family of his side are all 100% german aye, but i am 5th american german generation. Oh tis exciting.

BUT AUTO BOND! from what i know they got tired of farming, became miners got tired of that, became engineers, now we are moving into sciences.. well i am bewhaha... and only 30 minutes till i get how and add some blue wash to the snow to get some opinions.. should it be a light blue and or a dark blue?

definatly loight blue... the slight tint you get when you look into a bright sunny but snowy day... the surfaces shimmer blue a bit...

Vik you maybe waiting for at least a million years for better pictures..lol i may get a camera one day, we will see. The orks of America are a long and old veteran at my FLGS and are 5 years old, and as such have became a foe of my air calv. Its in the fluff i linked on page one. To sum the orks up, they raided a Terran museum found the flag, it became the center of their culture and since then have formd as one nation no matter who led the army.
