Ulric turned out well. You sure got him done quick, I wish I could do that quality in that short amount of time.

@Theo: No black outlines- thats just the base blue showing through! Its a simple base of Ultramarine Blue, then a bit of bleached bone mixed in to brighten it.
@Gits: Thanks! On the small guys, I don't think too many will have the warpaint, but the big ones are definitely getting the Braveheart treatment
We're gonna be using the slightly darker blue that is on the blonde pig. The darker ones would work with the bright blue, but its just a little too much on the bright pigs.
@Zerg: Hah! I appreciate that- Yeah, somehow I got him taken care of pretty much in a day- Airbrushing and washing black definitely helps make it quick, and red is something of a specialty of mine.
Just got in some minis fro Git's Mantis Maker comp.... Gonna try to sneak an entry in before the deadline!!

Instead, have some Alchemists! Love the poison green I get to paint... Sure I had to do white, too, but from here its simple bright colors (and leather)!

Love Ulric, the scout, and the alchemists!!
The test mini process was awesome, thanks for doing that and looking forward to the full army progress
Only note is, I do not like the new matte varnish =/. It's almost like... Too dull!
Which isn't a problem, as I can just mail you some rattle cans of Dullcote to use, instead. I've never had a problem with those and love the look they give so hopefully that's OK! I feel like if you compare the test mini pics before and after sealing, the "before" just pops so much more. Ulric also looks awesome, wondering if he is shown before or after sealing?

@EDC: Thanks! Yeah, I definitely approve of his sculpt- Big thumbs up to GW for not making him too overly blinged!
@Gits: THank you. She's easily my favorite model of the bunch- and thankfully is rather effective on the field!
@Alf: Hey, at least not many of the other guys had their stuff painted tonight, right? I wouldnt worry about it too much, this is what I do for a living, after all!
@ WM: Lies!! I'm sure that the warlord has had at least a little bit of overspray fall on to it...
And technically Knights are Titans, right? And I only painted some of those a few months ago
@nerd: Money where your mouth is, kiddo- Show me some Titan!! Itching to see what you do to one
@Yorkright: Thankee kindly! This sort of contrast is something I'm trying to work on. All of the best painters out there seem to go for really heavy gradients that emphasize the lines of the models. At leas with these guys, im trying a lot more glazing and shading. I really think that Im getting close to something workable, especially with the greens.
========================================
Paints came in, so itll be back to the Piggies as soon as I get some traction on an important rush project... More on that later. A little too early to make anything really public.
Anyways, tonight was the first Guildball night at the game store, and my Alchemists made their debut. Beat up some Brewers pretty solidly, then got trounced by a combination of dice luck and unexpectedly fast movement by a team of Fisher's guild.
But at least I looked pretty doing it.
First up, my lovely team captain, Smoke.
 \
And the angsty Venin:
And the deady Calculus:
Firey Mercury:
Lastly, an alternative captain model, Midas.
My primary 3-man team at the moment is Smoke, Venin, and Calculus. The combo is pretty straight forward- Calculus lobs gas grenades at the opponent, hopefully poisoning them. Next, Smoke duplicates the poison AoE and hits more targets, then moves the initial blast to ensure total saturation. Lastly, Venin wades into combat and bleeds the poisoned enemies. With optimal rolls, and assuming the enemy doesnt get to clear status effects, it ends up dealing at least 7 damage a turn to enemy models. This is in a game where most people have 15-20 HP.
I'd love to see how larger games work out- It sounds like it all starts to click at the full 6 models. Strategies start to gel, you're able to project force much easier and shut down certain teams that excel in the small games (like Butchers). Everyone becomes more balanced.
But thats for another day- Until we figure out all the rules, I htink the guys are all sticking to 3-man teams!
Till next time, Im back to work!

Post by: Ramos Asura
Oof! Sorry for the lack of official updates, you guys. The past two weeks have been crazy... Numerous surprise projects (more info soon), and most importantly of all, the full time job. This past week, most of my day has been spent staring at a computer screen, so when I get home I've just been ludicrously tired!!
I -did- get a bit of work done over the holiday weekend, though- All of the pigs now have most of their detail areas picked out in black. I quickly realized that doing all of them at once was a mistake, but by then had no other choice... From here on, I think Ill be taking them out in groups. First, the group of big boars (little details, should be a quickie), then the counts-as Bone Grinders, a third group being the characters, then the final group being the 5 larger models including the converted Doombull.
Hopefully now that I've begun to adjust to being employed again, Ill get some more done on my days off and after work!
Heres where we stand on Project Baconopalypse:
Everything (save for about half a dozen last minute additions) is at full fur colors, including the blonde stripes. I then went and blacked out all of the areas that will be different colors, including metals. Next stage is to start on the metals!

Hello there Ramos, I have read your plog from pretty much page one until now and I must say I am really impressed and inspired by your modeling and painting. I really enjoy watching your commissions progress and your humor/personality is epic
You have inspired me to start a plog here rather soon honestly. I plan on doing Pre-Heresy Imperial Fists (30k FTW baby!) I'm basically waiting for the models to arrive and scouting around for a good airbrush/compressor set up.
After I get that I would love to pick your mind about it's uses, techniques, tools/supplies etc that you need to use to make the models come to life like you seem to be able to do. I am soooo peanut butter and jelious of your fades, it just blows my mind honestly.
I can't wait to see more of the insanity that comes out of your workshop...especially the warlord.

I notice that none of the warhogs have the jaw bone part of their helmets painted black. Are you aware that that is part of the helmet and not part of their head? It is sort of confusing that they have a pig head with a larger pig skull and jaw over top. Like Russian nesting skulls. Just checking
9594
Post by: RiTides
Yeah we already touched base on that, the bone color just doesn't require the black undercoat
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
@FGM: I... Wow...
Thank you.
Im truly humbled to hear all that, and I hope to have a lot more madness to share in the future! (The Warlord is coming soon, honest!!! D: )
By all means, ask away whenever. I dont consider myself a master by any means- I mean there are some insanely talented people out there- but I'll do anything I can to help out! Plus, I just LOVE talking shop, haha!Once you get the Fists rolling out, lemme know. Its always great to see others' projects... Plus, you've sure picked one heck of an army to do for 30K- Yellow is still a wickedly evil color!! xD
For airbrushes, I can definitely recommend a Paasche Talon- Fantastic starter brush, and relatively inexpensive (usually like $100). That and their customer support is amazing. Snapped off the tip a few months ago and they were super about getting it all taken care of! Easy to clean, easy to maintain... Thing is a beauty and Im still using it after 5 or 6 years!
Compressors are a bit more of a challenge. I started with a Paasche D500SR, and for the most part it did what I needed it to. It doesn't have a tank, so you're going to be more limited on operating pressure. Mine usually kicked out about 23 under constant use. Adequate for most brushwork. Mine started to break down after several years of increasingly heavy use, so I upgraded to a big ol' Badger with a one gallon tank.
Anyways, the Paasche is a good deal for most use- like the airbrush, you're looking at another hundred. Prolly can find a bundle for cheaper, and of course there are probably a million other options- This is just what I'm familiar with, of course!
Oh! Inline moisture trap! GET ONE! They'll save you so much grief with water in the line after spraying for a while!
@EDC: Thank you! Plugging away is all I can do anymore- Got a schedule to keep, after all!
Incidentally, it just occured to me that your initials are in a perfect diagonal on a standard qwerty keyboard... The stuff you randomly notice sometimes, haha!
@Tides: Hehe... Always a good thing to get more people excited for painting
@ SL: Thanks!! Yeah the blonde really works well on these guys. So much nicer than if we had gone with a dark brown/black. I think this gives them a lot more character. Really pleased with how it came out.
@Wehr: I was just talking to Tides about how much you two think alike
No worries, man. I figured that a black undercoat was unnecessary for the big bone parts. ill be starting with a brown anyways, so this is closer to what I need!

I agree, really nice so far! Ramos and I were discussing if the "forelimbs" needed anything to distinguish them from all the fur - he might try brightening them "with a rich brown or something" . Any thoughts on that?
4670
Post by: Wehrkind
I don't think I would change the forelimbs too much. There will be a lot of color up front with the helmets, and just some subtle differences like claws instead of hooves will probably be enough. It might be a good spot for some warpaint to make them stand out a bit, but I wouldn't change the forelegs until the faces and mechanics are done.

Post by: Ramos Asura
So its about time I do the whole big reveal of what I've really been up to these past few weeks. Last month I was talking with Em from On the Lamb, mostly discussing the schemes of several EFT minis Im painting for them, and she forwarded me a link to a job posting. Privateer Press was looking for a Studio Painter. I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. Its a fantastic company, and how amazing would it be to have to paint for a living?!
I prepared the usual resume and cover letter, also putting together a portfolio. I wanted the best of the best I've done, and came up with something like 10 pages of photos. But I wanted to do something more- In every job posting, you're going to be competing with countless other applicants, and any way you can stand out from the crown should be capitalized upon.
And so I set about on a rapid turnaround project of a peculiar nature- A Skorne Titan Gladiator- Lots of NMM and trying to push my skills to the next level... I painted this mini as a demo piece and sent it to the Studio Director- I figured that theres such a difference between a picture and the actual model, it could only be a benefit to send in a physical model. Besides, what a great way to be memorable in the application/interview process, right?
Well, I guess it worked, because last week I got a response- I made the first cut!!! Cut to today, and I got to set up the interview proper. In two weeks, I go into the lions den and interview with the Director himself via Skype
The timing couldn't have been any crazier- Lock and Load- Privateer's BIG convention- is next weekend, and Mk 3 of the Warmahordes rules are dropping soon as well, so 110% of their energy is going to the events, not to interviewing right now. Its a pain to wait, but man... Im glad I have a bit of time to prepare!!
Wish me luck
==============================
Pig Mini-Update! Pinky and the Bacon!
Starting to base the bone areas and giving the pigs some extra detail colors. Pink noses because pigs, and the tanks have their first coat of brass and oil wash.
Warlord Mini-Update: Base-pocalypse now!
A rather new addition to the Warlord Titan for WM is a detachable display base. PLanned to have a bunch of marines skittering around its feet, plus a wrecked rhino of some sort. Its rather on the large side.
===================
Alrighty, that chunk of updates is through, and its getting late. Im off to bed, then soon as I get back tomorrow from work, its gonna be time to hit the brush! Hopefully I can get those big piggies finished off by Monday!
Thanks for reading, you guys!

Camkierhi - These boars are actually a combination of Titan Forge Direwulfs, and bits from Mierce Miniatures Chaagmuth (which they sell in pieces) - namely the jaw and two limbs, which replaced the head and back legs of the Direwulfs.
Wehrkind did that conversion, and Ramos added the tanks and cables, to make them a bit more augmented looking. I think they did a splendid job . Need more awesome boar sculpts on the market!

No riders on these guys- theyre just really angry pigs. Hopefully the addition of some color to the tanks is bringing them more into line with what you're thinking. We ended up scratching the blue warpaint as no matter how much we thought on it, we just couldnt get it to work quite like how we wanted. So we just went with copious amounts of RUST!
@EDC: Yeah, there are easier ways to get bacon.... but I dunno- Having to fight it first makes it taste better!*

They have come together brilliantly. Was a little sus about the original conversions not being enough pig. But I will humbly eat my words as they are perfect. Absolutely perfect. Makes me reminisce about a snakebite boarboy and his cyboar....

wowzers Ramos! those aren't Boar-ing' models at all! your painting would 'roast' most others around here! I think you sit down and have a glass of 'swine' but don't hog it all! did you use a hog bristle brush for these guys? and did you paint listening to Amy Swinehouse?

Post by: RiTides
Ughhhhhhhhh
Azazelx, the models are these:
These boars are actually a combination of Titan Forge Direwulfs, and bits from Mierce Miniatures Chaagmuth (which they sell in pieces) - namely the jaw and two limbs, which replaced the head and back legs of the Direwulfs.
Wehrkind did that conversion, and Ramos added the tanks and cables, to make them a bit more augmented looking.

Excellently done. I think the rust works really well on these guys, and I really like the shiny tanks of fluid too - they make a great contrast to the browns
Edit: where are those tank parts from? I'd love to do something similar on the chaos warhound models I'm using in 40k

We have BACON!!! @Payne: Iirc, they are from the Talos Engine or some other Dark Eldar kit. There are a buncha different tanks to choose from. ============================ Not pig-related, but Work-related: New mini from On the Lamb. The female variant for the Dark Knight! I have 3 other minis for OTL, including 2 variants of Battsu (a special Knight), and the Behemoth- a mini that appeared on this blog a while ago... You might know him as the Polar Bear who skipped leg day As far as the pigs, I have the silvers down and based on the big guys, and the last couple models built for the army. Now that I know the scheme, hopefully I can knock these guys out right quick!

It may hurt, but don't fall into despair. You did something many cant' do. You put yourself out there, and GOT AN INTERVIEW. That means you were a finalist, and that's IMPORTANT.
Have an ice cream sandwich, a tasty beverage, and reflect on the fact that your skills are SO GOOD, PP gave you an interview.
That, in and of itself, is a career victory, and well worth celebrating, this weekend.

I'm going to agree with Brian, take this whole experience as a massive positive! YOU are a good enough painter to actually impress the company to such a degree that they wanted to know MORE! they wanted to see YOU for an opportunity to paint their models, sure you didn't win but hey, we don't know what the determining factor was in the decision or how close it was!
Whatever happens from here on in you've got the feather in the cap of how well you did :-0
and you've got more time to build a TITAN!!!!!!

Agreed, you can not be disappointed with being in the top 1%, you are amazing and exactly as Nerdy pointed out, you don't know why they chose someone else, probably because it was the directors son he won! Chin up bud, you are amazing.

So.....about that titan now.....

Hey guys.
So... It's been a bit.
After getting the big "No" from Privateer, I was feeling pretty damned bummed, as you guys can imagine. Sort of lost my way, didnt know what to do next. All in all it got a bit overwhelming. Slept a lot, put my liver through its paces with gin, slept some more... I viewed not getting the job as a failure. Not only was it a solid job that I really really wanted to land, but it also reflected on my work. Being judged as "not good enough" really cut deep. I just couldnt bring myself to paint anything. I couldnt even look at the models on my desk without a pang of heartbreak.
Fortunately, I had a lot of other routines to follow. Work, sleep. Wash rinse and repeat. Kept my mind busy, and even had a talk with one of my co-workers on "why I seemed so down" Its bizarre how easy it is to talk with a nearly complete stranger, compared to even some really close friends...
After getting home Tuesday, I did a lot of thinking. You guys were right. I got an interview, and THAT should be what I'm focused on.
So I refocused all of my disappointment and sadness into a driving force and "revenge". If they dont want me now, goddamnit Im gonna MAKE them want me! I'll push my skills and refine my abilities until I can march right into the next interview ( YES THERE WILL BE ANOTHER SOMEDAY!) and really blow them away!!
I have to learn new stuff, enter and WIN some painting competitions, meet new people in the industry and pick their brains...
I'll be going with OTL to Gencon come August (come visit me at the booth! ), and Im heavily leaning towards getting out to ReaperCon in October. Gonna make this happen... The cogs are in motion, I just need to get them to go where I want!
So with this newfound resolve, I spent most of yesterday (and today after work) getting more paint down on the bigger models in Project Aporkalypse. As they stand, the silver is done, and the gold is mostly finished. Still a number of other details, in particular bone and leather, but Im on my way.
I've also got some update shots from when I was on OTL's stream last week. Mostly metals on two versions of the same model. Both are supposed to be rather worn versions of the metal. A way to go on them yet, but Im well on schedule for a GenCon deadline!
A bit real for a second.... But I'm honestly in you guys' debt... I havent even met half of you guys in person and you're still so quick to put forth the helping hand and kind word... As much as I whine and lament and bitch and moan, I still havent scared you guys off... And even as little as I post on other peoples' blogs, you guys still pop in and encourage me (Im sorry, Im just miserable at keeping in touch )
I just can't say how thankful I am to know you guys... It really means a lot to me.
Till next time

I'm glad you changed your mind and viewed this as a positive not a negative. It wasn't "I'm not good enough I didn't get the job", It's " They liked my work so much they wanted to know more about me!".
You didn't get the job it could of been a hundred other reasons other then your painting. What if the winning guy was a local? etc etc etc so many What if's?....
I am glad to see you back doing what you clearly love and have a damn good talent for.
Those skin tones look great on the walking bacon, and I like the two different armours. I can't wait to see both of those models done.
There is no way I can hit Gencon but I wish you and all the OTL people all the best and I hope you blow people away with your fantastically painted demo models. ( and if Vic is there herself...try to talk her into doing 'non'-arbites. Some future judge and street troopers with power mauls and suppression shields would be amazing..... )
As for scaring me off...bro you ain't got nothing on the GF...now she SCARES me.... and I will sick her on you if we don't see some Titan soon....

Pigs are looking absolutely amazing. Take getting an interview as a great achievement and a learning experience. I went through I think about 50 job applications achieving 12 interviews and scrubbed out of all of them. Started to wonder what was wrong with me. But a wiser head than mine pointed out I was interesting enough to talk to further and eventually I landed a job I was super keen on and suits my abilities perfectly. I put some of the success down to all those previous interviews and the experience and challenges they presented.

You can't be behind him your on the bottom of the planet so your obviously beneath him .
I'd rather see you paint cool stuff here. I'm not a fan of the ascetics of privateer press. Even the piggies are a mash up of their items and other companies so they are better than straight from them. I like interviewing for jobs I have no chance at/ or don't want. The interviews help you train for the next job that is calling to you.

Thanks guys!! Its funny you should mention the metals... Theyre actually brutally simple, taking in some tips I gleaned from Nerd's blog. A good basecoat, a few washes, then a really sharp highlight on the edges and scratches. Dust it with rust and boom! @Gits: I agree somewhat. Though at the end of the day, my sole concern is to make a gorgeous final product, regardless of the game its destined for. So long as the client is happy, so am I @Wehr: Oh I gotcha covered! Ill be shipping these guys back wrapped in concrete, bricks, and an old Chaos Dreadnought! With packing material like that, whats the worst that could happen!? @Tides: Im jealous that you live so close to a good store... mines something like 40 minutes away xD Definitely looking forward to seeing these guys on the tabletop! ======================= Didnt do all that much yesterday, as it seems I picked up a wee bit of strep throat from somewhere (I blame work!). So Ive been mostly sleeping and drinking hot tea since finishing the big bacon. Today, I woke up refreshed and considerably healthier, so set out to get more bacon painted! I had received an addition to the force some time ago, so the first thing I needed to do was to bring them all up to the same level as the rest of the figs- Skin and fur done, everything else blacked out! Still need to black out parts, but its all a progress! First up, a pair of lovely PP characters with minor alterations. Doctor Arcadius got a head swap from some random Wreck Age mini, and the massive two-headed pig, Sturm and Drang, got a simple cable on one arm. Then I repainted the "test minis" to bring them back into the main scheme: And lastly, the full squad of converted Bone Grinders. Just had 2 bare ones to add into this, bringing them from 8 to a full force of 10! This is my next phase, and I hope to get them done over the weekend. I work tomorrow but then I'll have 2 whole days off! Till next time, thanks for reading!!

(taps fingers on the desk)...if I don't see some warlord titan action soon, I will sick Bonnie ( my most wonderful GF...well she should be my wife we have been together for 10 years but one of the first things she ever said to me was " why ruin a perfectly good relationship by getting married?") on you, and she will guilt you and twist your words around so that at the end you will be apologizing for stuff you never even knew you did... unless I see some Warlord titan action here soon.
( BTW I don't know if the command deck on the warlord has the room, but on the scratch build I did years ago for a friend we made the princeps in a animoantic fluid cask using water effects...just putting it out there....

Soon, VERY SOON, Ill get some assembly done on the Titan! Seriously, guys I know I've been teasing it for ages... But I for real have everything I need to make it go- just gotta get the time to work on it!!
Great to hear the positive feedback from the gamestore, wehr! Any chance of pics? No gaming up around here, so I have to live vicariously through the minis I paint
Pity about the dice luck, though... If you want I can send Tides some of my "special" RPG dice. I've got to get new ones anyways... Rolled double ones (on 2D6) three times IN A ROW... Damn near resulted in a total party kill by black hole...
=======================
I’ve today and tomorrow off of work for the holiday (Happy 4th of July, everyone!), So its time for some heavy painting!
I currently have most of the colors blocked in on the “Bone Grinders”, and from here its mostly shading and highlights. Gonna try to get them done tomorrow!

I have so many different brands of bloody matte varnish now. Stupid humidiity >< Got yet another brand's offering the other day - only had a chance to give it a quickk test in the 'delightful' humid soggy mess that is a Korean summer. .....so far so good actually. Gave the tank I'm working on a quick spray and zero frosting! Hope hopes we have for this one!

Once, just once, I would like dullcote to work how its supposed to
I've given the pigs a gloss coat and most of the white is gone. Still spots I can see, but not much can be done about them.
Will need to wait till tomorrow after work before I can varnish again, hopefully to better ends.
After this army is done, Im never picking up a rattlecan of Dullcote again. Its failed me too many times compared to my airbrush.
52201
Post by: evildrcheese
Do people generally use a different airbrush for varnishing than for painting?
Or do you just have to clean it really well...in fact do you clean it with something different?
EDC
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
It depends on the varnish you use, your own technique/preferences... I use the same airbrush for everything.
As far as cleaning, back when I used Liquitex varnish, it was just water cleanup, so same as the normal paint.
When I use Dullcote out of the bottle, I use the lacquer thinner to clean my brush as well, then my normal windex and paper towels. So long as you dont let anything sit for very long, it cleans up quickly and without issue.

Post by: Wehrkind
That is so strange, I have never had Dullcote fail me, even if I WAY over do application. We need to compare notes someday and see what the differences are. I am getting paranoid about accidentally replicating your conditions and wrecking a model :(
Nice looking models though! I should thank you for making my sculpting look a lot better than it is

Post by: RiTides
Such a bummer about the dullcote! If it's humid feeling there today, I'd try a test piece first or just wait to varnish on the weekend or the like. I've also never had Dullcote fail me, but I'm paranoid about not using it in wet or humid conditions, or using the end of the can, for just this kind of horror story reason...
I can't make out much in the pic but hopefully it's salvageable, seems like it's a common enough occurrence and folks have worked out how to fix it by re-glossing. But yeah... definitely wait if it's feeling too humid and can circle back to seal it all at the end! If anyone else has advice on fixing the frosting issue please post up.
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
Tried a test one today, doesnt -feel- terribly humid, but I still got little patches o frosting. Not nearly as bad as yesterdays group, but not spectacular. Im gonna give it one more shot over the weekend (or when it cools down), then call it quits and have Tides matte them as we were talking about. Its annoying, but just gotta go that way :/
@Wehr: I think they were sculpted perfectly fine
9594
Post by: RiTides
Yep that'd be totally fine! Me sealing them >>> frosted flakes sealing
As long as the ones that got frosted are repaired it will be no problem. Worth testing one last time on the weekend when the weather's had a chance to change, though.
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
Yup yup!
I'll do my best on repairs. There are a couple minor areas that show through the gloss, but hopefully I can mitigate the worst of it.
Little brother I showed it to wasnt able to tell right away until I pointed it out, but he's not a mini guy, so his eye isnt quite as trained.

Terrible thing to have a model stuffed by the final step. I haven't had the horror stories of spray paint (whether colours or varnish) ever giving me grief. But a good mate of mine had a big issue with the GW fang spray doing horrible things to models.

Waiting for a good day to do the retry, but so far results are not promising :/
IN the mean time, its been work and painting the rest. At this stage its just all the solos and characters to go. Time consuming, but only because they have so many colors on em!
Here's Maximus and Lord Carver.

Those are the legit models, Archer! Privateer's characters are great, it's the units that I like to convert for and... well OK everything but the characters
Awesome work, Ramos!

Post by: Archer
If they are the real characters then the conversions do an amazing job of fitting the appearance and vibe if the force. Damn nice job.
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
@Archer: Yup yup!! These minis are all the stock PP characters/solos. One or two have minor tweaks and conversions (biggest of which is a simple headswap on a model I havent shown), but overall, they're unaltered.
I really got into the whole Frankenpig look when messing with my side of the conversions- reminded me a LOT of doing my orks back in the day. The whole roughly jamming metal parts into fleshy parts... Love it!!
More work on the pigs! Hoping to finish these guys by the end of the week. Honestly not that hard, just many many details!
Lord Carver- Im particularly pleased with how his sword came out. Might yet hit it with a little bit more ultra bright silver just for the brightest highlights.
This guy is one of my favorites of the group and shows many of the themes indicative of the army's aesthetic- Sturm and Drang!

Carver's sword is truly epic! I don't think he ever swings it, just leans on it for the intimidation effect.

There are a ton of really gorgeous details. Temark able how much detail that their sculptors can squeeze in there. Its why I really enjoy painting the pp characters. They let me go wild with detail painting, then I'm left with a fantastic model in the end.

Dude looking good! :-) loving the spawn dog things with the nasty intestine tentacles the slick blood effect is great, have you thought about some blood marks on the fur where they tendrils would whip around and hit the beast?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
The original thing-dogs were Ramos' idea. I'm not sure where he got all the extra tentacles from that he put on them but when making these two to round out the unit, I had to think long and hard about how to replicate the effect.
I took some plastic rod that was about the same diameter as the tentacles molded onto the hounds & subjected it to a stream of heat from my heat gun (blow dryer on steroids). As the plastic softened, I pulled the two halves of the rod apart. This thinned and stretched the heated parts of the rod until they finally snapped, giving me the curved tentacles that Ramos has so expertly painted.
I love them Ramos. The shiny, slick appearance of the tentacles is *perfect*. Thank you!

AAAGHH!! SO MUCH TO DO!
In case I havent mentioned before, I'm going to be working for OTL at Gencon later this week- And of course that means that I have a metric ton of stuff to do, not to mention work suddenly got crazy and has been keeping me from my painting table far more than I'd like!
Biggest thing to report is that the crisis has ended and the endless tides of bacon are at last at an end!
Not present in the group shot are the big boars I finished an eternity ago (or at least thats what it feels like! )
Maximus:
Little goblins- Particularly pleased how the tentacles came out. Hes so proud of his catch... Too bad that mask has such poor peripheral vision!
The good Doctor Arcadius... Swapped out his bare head for a hooded one from some Wreck-Age Reclaimers...
And his assistant, Targ.
Sturm and Drang, the terrible twosome:
Lord Carver, a very posh piggy:
Counts-as Bon Grinders, lovingly converted by Wehrkind:
=======================
Next up on the list are 3 minis for OTL's booth that are juuuuust about complete. Essentially one detail each on them to go!
Super crunch time... The heat is on!

Post by: Wehrkind
Looking pretty darn good! I hadn't quite realized just how bare Maximus' right side is. I will have to do some free hand there when I finish up my own model. I kind of hate it when sculptors make bodies that are supposed to be covered in hair totally flat like that. (So, like the entire PP line of were-things.) Just seems so lazy to make the painter put on all the fur detail that one should see.

@Wehr: I totally getcha, though I sorta prefer having smoother surfaces so that you have the option between fur and smooth. Adding details like this are easier than having to work with someone elses sculpted details! I'll admit maybe I should have added a wee bit of texture to it, but he fits with the rest of the army this way. Hopefully it isnt too glaring once you guys see it in person!
@ RT: Glad to hear! Hopefully they bring you some good luck against Wehr!
As far as the OTL figs, Ill have final shots of them tomorrow. Wrapping them up now, so tomorrow Im varnishing them before work!
And you bet that ill be taking pics!
@FGM: Thanks, man!
@ SL: Understood completely! I still totally intend on doing a full write-up on the process. Just a matter of time!
@Archer: Thanks!! They're my favorites, too. Super bright colors and really fun models. Was a great break from the browns and blondes!
===========================
Well it’s sure been awhile since the last Warlord update! In between other projects and waiting on the rest of these parts to come in, it just sorta got pushed to the back burner!
But I aim to correct this, and so without further ado, I bring you part 7 of the Warlord assembly!
=========================
Warlord Part 7: Every Day is Leg Day
Always remember that the final project will ultimately be balanced on these legs. Any extra strength you can add now will only benefit you. Additionally, installing pins in the knees and hips will allow you to pose the model without struggling to keep everything together with blu- tac alone!
To drill the holes, I HEAVILY recommend you grab a power drill if you aren't already using one. There is a lot of stock to remove, and that equates to a lot of hand work. Save your poor fingers some effort!
To drill the knee joint, I suggest you start only with the upper leg. Carefully center your bit, then slowly drill through the first half of the part. Flip it over and repeat on the other side. You can check that the holes are aligned by putting the drill bit through the holes. If it doesn’t quite match, you can use the bit to widen the holes a little. (Another benefit of using a power drill, you see?)
Next, slot the lower leg into the joint, ensuring it is centered. There is a convenient circular marking on the lower leg that is perfect for checking this. When the part is aligned, use the drilled holes in the upper leg as a guide for drilling the lower leg. I found it worked best to only drill a little bit while the parts were together, then I separated them and finished drilling the lower leg on its own. So long as you made sure that your holes are straight, the parts should line up perfectly once you insert a small piece of brass.
The hip, on the other hand (foot?) is much easier to drill. I found that it works best to drill it from the center of the large flat area on the outside of the leg. Drill all of the way through the center of this part using the concentric circles of the design to center your drill. This is one hole we won't need to worry about patching up, as a separate piece will be added later on that completely covers it. Lucky us, huh?
While you’re at it, take your drill and start assembling the Titan’s waist. This is a simple affair- just 3 pieces that slot solidly into one another. Though surely solid enough on its own, I figured a little extra structural insurance wouldn’t go amiss. I first drilled a hole straight through the main waist part- slightly off center, as you’ll notice there is a cut-out in the design that goes past the centerpoint of the hips. I then used this as a guide to drill matching holes for the “caps” that the legs attach to. Just dry fit the cap in its socket, drill through the hole in the waist, and there you have it! After you do this to both sides, run a brass rod all the way through!
Let the hips dry completely before moving on to the next step, where the Warlord will start standing on his own two feet!
=========================
Hopefully this'll tide you guys over for a little bit... Though not nearly as long between updates, of course! Ill have some additional updats for Gencon come tomorrow, so stay tuned!
Till tomorrow!~

Looking great! A warlord is way out of my possibility set of things to buy, but seeing it all come together will still be a lot of fun!
Also, I apologize, I sounded like I was scolding you there about the smooth skin. Wasn't my intention at all! I just have a splinter in my soul from painting fur patterns on probably 30 or so various werewolves and assorted beasts. I like having smooth surfaces to do freehand on, and am definitely opposed to the overly busy models many manufacturers produce. On the other hand, furry things should look at least a little furry without us painters having to add it in!

Yeeeeeah, Im still not feeling fantastic...
Sleeping a LOT more than I anticipated, and have the whole cold/flu thing going on. Wheeeeeee......~
GenCon was fun, even though I missed a lot of it. Met many fantastic people, got feedback on my painting style, suggestions on how to improve. I unfortunately dont think I have many pictures to show. I just was too sick a lot of the time ><
I guess I can start by relating Part one of my GenCon Retrospective: The loot! (Easiest, as I can remember what I bought, even in the haze of medication and illness)
The vendor hall is massive. Truly massive.
Aircraft hangar massive.
Vendors of every shape and size were present, from the gargantuan Privateer Press and CMON booths, to random things like these silicone dragon toys that reminded me of creepy crawlers.
I mostly stuck around the OTL booth running demos, but swung out every few hours to look around. Got to meet Poots of Kingdom Death fame, met the studio Director of Privateer in person, met several freelance painters whose work I've followed for a long time... Great stuff!
Swung by the Steamforged games booth and picked up the season 2 mascot for my Alchemists. Really neat mascot- really changes up the playstyle from technical with Flask to something a little more offensive and area of denial with this beautiful snake
While I was in the area, I got a new case for my GB minis. Should have gotten another case or two for miscellaneous other minis I have floating around here in the studio, but ah well. Next time!
Snagged a pair of new Wander figures designed by Heath Foley (Kangaroo Dragoon!!), as well as a Chibi Dragoon from OTL.
Have a few projects to mess with before Reapercon in October... Im hoping to enter the painting competition they run. But thats something for later!

More work on the Masons, and they're really taking shape now.
In the art, their armor is bright and polished, so I’m trying something a little different from my normal grungy metals. Using a secret weapon miniatures black-blue wash over army painter chainmail. A bit of highlighting on top of this, including an ultra bright silver, and we should be looking at some very shiny armor!
Already its looking like my camera is having trouble coping with the shine.... Maybe im on the right track?

15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
@EDC: Many thanks!!
@Archer: I suppose you could say that. I tend to paint very intuitively, so what I do doesnt always have a logical reason to it... When I do it it just "feels" right.
Most of the time I try to paint the larger areas behind tiny details. So for example, I aimed to paint the pants on Brick (large area), before his tabard (medium), then the little dangling plates (tiny). Doing it this way just lets me be sloppy on the larger areas and paint them quicker, then the smaller areas I can be more delicate with.
@ SL: You saw the big guy standing in the last update! I call the Gits rule fulfilled!
Next Titan post will be written tonight/tomorrow morning before work, so hang on just a bit longer!
============================
Masons continue!
Heres a closeup of the Season 2 captain, Hammer.
At this stage, I think I'm about 60-75% finished. Biggest thing to do now is hair and skin colors. That should do a ton for making them look more presentable!! The art has them with wildly varying skin/hair colors (hammer here, forexample, is black!), so this'll make some good practice.

Warlord Titan Part 8: Feet of Resin
Now that we have our legs prepared, its time to work out the posing.
The pins we put in the knees are great to help figure out a loose pose, however for our final dry fit and eventual gluing of the parts, we want to solidify it just a little bit more. To do this, we are going to add more pins!
To this end I decided to use some finishing nails that just happened to have the right diameter to match the drill bit I had on hand. An added bonus to using finishing nails is that one end of the "pin" will have a good sharp point on it, so even if your hole is just a little small, you can still tightly wedge it in. You'll notice in the pictures I have that the pins are still pretty long- I cut these down later after finalizing my pose. It doesnt particularly matter where you place these pins- There is a lot of flat area on the leg details where you can easily hide where you drilled.
To drill the holes for these secondary pins, I found it easiest to pose the model, then hold the parts together in one hand as I drilled through the parts with the other. You dont need to go all the way through, just most of the way. Optimally you're looking at going through one side of the upper leg, all the way through the middle bit (the lower leg insert) and part of the way through the opposite side of the upper leg.
The final result of this should be a leg more or less locked in position.
For fitting the waist and hips together, I dry fit the parts and got them into a pose that I wanted, then used the hole I drilled in the upper leg as a guide to drill into the waist. Fit a good piece of brass into this hole on each side, and the waist should hold very tightly together as we mess with it.
The feet are a far simpler affair.
Unless you are going with an incredibly dynamic pose, ie the warlord striding forward, You are pretty safe just gluing the feet flat. And man... are these things HUGE!
As you can see, I've put a pin into the middle of the foot. This will match up with a hole in the ankle I've already drilled, and should help with the final stability of the Titan. I found that the toes dont particularly need to be pinned, as most of the weight is balanced on the dinner plate-sized footpads, however with me being me, I put some small pins in it anyways. Nothing terribly drastic, just some more short shards of finishing nails.
Let this dry fully before trying to fit it together with the legs.
=================
With pins in place, its time for one last dry fit before epoxying it all together... Double and triple check your pose, make sure its balanced... This is the time to bang out all of the errors and issues!
At this point, I couldn't help myself from slotting the torso onto the legs and seeing how it looked... Even before glue, with all the pins we've put in the legs it very nearly stands all on its own!
Yaaaaay~~~

Yeah I have no clue how one can use stuff like the Warlord in game... Though they look damn impressive on the field- Few years ago I went to an Apocalypse game that had a scratch build warlord (scaled more like an Imperator, really), and a few Warhounds and Reavers... Things got insane once those things hit the table!
Next phase of the Warlord's build is probably going to be magnetizing the waist, then building the carapace weapons. Lots and lots of slow work- Mostly waiting for stuff to dry!
=================
Human component of the Mason team is nearly complete. Using Reaper Triads for the skin, which Im really starting to take a liking to.
Skin still is one of my weakest subjects, though...
Another Reaper Triad provided me with some nice browns for Hammer's African skintone. The paints gave a really subtle blend, so I think Im going to tap in to some Tanned Flesh Shadow to highlight his skin.

Yea, we used to play a big Apoc game at the shop every other month or so once it came out. It was sort of fun, but it always seemed like you spend 2 hours setting up, then first turn picked up about half your stuff and put it back before it even got to move. I think in the end, Apoc works best for planned scenarios, not "bring what you want" games. (Although we did have a good one where every model with an armor value cost double points. That actually worked really well.)
Those Masons are looking really nice! I will have to look into that Reaper Triad you mentioned. I have never been super pleased with any of the darker skins I have tried, assuming I want them looking human, anyway.

I'll help you out.. On turn one you point a weapon at the Enemy and it goes away.. Repeat till all weapons have fired or all enemy's are destroyed.
On turn Two repeat the steps in turn one. Any questions?

Actually, yea, that was pretty much it. We each had I think 6k points, with 8 or 10 people playing and an L shaped 30 foot table. One guy took a warlord and I think a few people took big tank companies. Otherwise, it was a normal army's worth of tanks for most people, maybe a baneblade or equivalent, and then pretty much all your infantry choices you had around. 6000 points of infantry makes for a much better game than 6000 points of titan

Epic titan is epic, gotta admire the skills it needs building pieces that large, makes me nervous just reading about someone else doing it.
Mason team is coming along nicely. Skin tones look amazing.

As promised, a mega photo update!
Probably my favorite of the team, Hammer!
Next is Harmony- This is one of the sculpts I just couldn't get to work for me... :/
The sculpts have much the same problem as many of the old Relic Knights stuff does, in that the face is TINY and pretty flat. And before you ask, no, she doesnt actually have little beady eyes... the light seems to have washed out the eyepits, so all you get is the black! I did go with a particularly pale complexion for her...
The other problematic sculpt was Honour. Same problems, but not nearly as bad... Still pretty flat though.
Much better was one of the newer additions to the team, Chisel. I hear shes a badass in game... Hopefully she brings good luck to my client!
Tower, who totally looked like Colossus when he was just bare metal... Was tempted to do an Xmen team of Masons!
Mallet, the season 1 captain for the Masons.
Brick was a welcome change from the small minis in this team... Hes big, hes chunky... Really enjoyed him!
Another Season 2 guy (I think), Flint!
Then the Mascots, Marbles the baboon and Wrecker the Armadillo! The latter I REALLY love... Its this weird blend of adorable and absurd that really tickles me
And last, but not least... The ball. Simple, but effective, I think...

Thanks for the kind words, guys
Client seems to be pretty happy with them, so Im happy.
Titan is slowly progressing, primarily because of work- Been pretty busy, so not much time to work on painting!
Did do a bit of work on a random mini for my DnD campaign... Rather crazy character- Some kinda birdman monk!
Before you ask, no, I dunno where its from! Hes just had this model knocking about in his boxes for years unpainted... Then I came around and needed to pay off my bartab!
Next major army project is infinity- Boring assembly pics at the moment, but hopefully will be getting some paint flying on them before/after work tomorrow! Only problem is its all white and black!!
Hah... well I always like a good challenge

Progress is slow as the weather continues being a pain in the butt, and I've run out of varnish thinner I use for dullcote! (Professionalism!)
Quick little mini update for you guys- Infinity stuff is assembled and primer is drying, and while all that was setting up, I broke out a little friend of ours...
Yeah... Its still huge.

Excellent..
How do you fell the casting of the parts came out? was there a lot of flash? Part fit together well?
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Obviously I'm not the one putting it together, but the parts seemed to be no flash and very little slipping. They weren't very far into the production run at that point.
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
Flash was near nonexistent, even on the smaller parts. Very minor slippage, mostly fixable with some scraping/cutting. The worst of it I think would be the massive heatsink blocks on the arm lasers. There the slippage is slight (millimeter or less), but very hard to clean on the many fins. Some rivets got destroyed by mold slip, but nothing too extreme, and most of these are on the undersides or will be hidden by the armor plates. Fit was ok for the most part. Several parts needed some hot water bending, but thats common for any resin kit. Pieces were pretty obvious where they went- proper cut-outs and tabs... I havent really needed to look at the instructions much because of this. Today I had the crap shift at work, so I could only get an hour or two of work in before heading in, then about that much afterwards before sleeping. Spent it building up the shoulder guns. A bit of a bugger with the three barrels, but not terrible.

That wall paper is why his models look so good. Our eyes are drawn to his models making it seem like they are a thing of beauty because behind it, is a visual horrorscape capable of instant ocular destruction.

Oh my god... it's like staring into Slaanesh's infinite labia. The longer you look the more it starts to swirl and fold before you. How the hell did I not notice that before you pointed it out? Now that I see it, I just feel sad, nostalgic and confused... high school in the bathroom all over again.

Wehr....
Hey now, dont you knock my hideous wallpaper! Ill have you know I searched the world over for the pinnacle of haute couture. I consulted countless shamans and scientists and spent millions! Years of hard research in double-blind studies went into this particular shade and texture.
Orrrr maybe I got bored after about 5 minutes of my hunt and just picked this up from some blind guy behind the 7/11, but same difference, right??
@nerd: you're always welcome to come on over and redecorate. Probably the only way this paper will ever get changed!
@Salvage: That... That mat... exists
How.... Unexpected O_o
More work on the Infinity minis!
White is a nightmare of a color- no good way to shade it... Hit it with a wash and you stain it, but you need some way of darkening the panel lines. So I went with a bit of a bold experiment on this one: Oil Wash!
Burning the midnight oil on this one, but it seems to be working thus far.
But of course it looks beautiful... Im using my special backdrop.
May your retinas be set ablaze in its pure beauty.
====================
@Moonpie: The dark skin was painted using Reaper's Dark Skin Triad, plus a little Tanned Flesh Shadow mixed in at the highlights. I glazed P3 coal black into the shadows to deepen the shadows and bring a more natural tone to the skin.
Lots and lots of glazing with thin paint- thats the key to skin!

Another exalt. If I'd been drinking my morning cup of tea, I would've spat it everywhere.
The infinity mini really lends itself to the wash, certainly different from the bright infinity schemes I'm used to seeing.

So when you say glazing, I imagine you are describing a heavily thinned paint. Is this thinned with water or medium?
Also, I like your wallpaper. I think it is pretty. So, you know it must be ugly.

Yeah, the wash really helped make the armor look grungy, but not -too- grungy. Just enough to make the armor look lived in
moonpie wrote:So when you say glazing, I imagine you are describing a heavily thinned paint. Is this thinned with water or medium?

I use mostly a matte medium with a bit of water mixed in for flow. No real specific measurements, though, as I mix everything on the brush! The key is that the paint should just give a bit of color to what its over. More and more layers of the thin paint, and the color gets more intense. And Im always going back with shade colors and blending the shadows a bit more. Its important to keep the contrast up!

That model is looking great! And I actually think your photos where the minis show up the best is when the wallpaper is your background . You went through a phase of using artificial backgrounds, and this is much better, imo!
