Working on it, Honest

Hes getting so big now =D

More work on the Masons, and they're really taking shape now.

In the art, their armor is bright and polished, so I’m trying something a little different from my normal grungy metals. Using a secret weapon miniatures black-blue wash over army painter chainmail. A bit of highlighting on top of this, including an ultra bright silver, and we should be looking at some very shiny armor!

Already its looking like my camera is having trouble coping with the shine.... Maybe im on the right track?

Big titan is big.

Nice metallics on the masons, certainly looks polished and complements the blue nicely.

Do you normally get in and paint the largest areas first when you sit down to do a model?

@EDC: Many thanks!!

@Archer: I suppose you could say that. I tend to paint very intuitively, so what I do doesnt always have a logical reason to it... When I do it it just "feels" right.
Most of the time I try to paint the larger areas behind tiny details. So for example, I aimed to paint the pants on Brick (large area), before his tabard (medium), then the little dangling plates (tiny). Doing it this way just lets me be sloppy on the larger areas and paint them quicker, then the smaller areas I can be more delicate with.

@SL: You saw the big guy standing in the last update! I call the Gits rule fulfilled!
Next Titan post will be written tonight/tomorrow morning before work, so hang on just a bit longer!

============================

Masons continue!

Heres a closeup of the Season 2 captain, Hammer.
At this stage, I think I'm about 60-75% finished. Biggest thing to do now is hair and skin colors. That should do a ton for making them look more presentable!! The art has them with wildly varying skin/hair colors (hammer here, forexample, is black!), so this'll make some good practice.

Would love to see you do an African skin tone. I have never had a lot of luck getting it to look natural.

Warlord Titan Part 8: Feet of Resin

Now that we have our legs prepared, its time to work out the posing.
The pins we put in the knees are great to help figure out a loose pose, however for our final dry fit and eventual gluing of the parts, we want to solidify it just a little bit more. To do this, we are going to add more pins!

To this end I decided to use some finishing nails that just happened to have the right diameter to match the drill bit I had on hand. An added bonus to using finishing nails is that one end of the "pin" will have a good sharp point on it, so even if your hole is just a little small, you can still tightly wedge it in. You'll notice in the pictures I have that the pins are still pretty long- I cut these down later after finalizing my pose. It doesnt particularly matter where you place these pins- There is a lot of flat area on the leg details where you can easily hide where you drilled.

To drill the holes for these secondary pins, I found it easiest to pose the model, then hold the parts together in one hand as I drilled through the parts with the other. You dont need to go all the way through, just most of the way. Optimally you're looking at going through one side of the upper leg, all the way through the middle bit (the lower leg insert) and part of the way through the opposite side of the upper leg.

The final result of this should be a leg more or less locked in position.

For fitting the waist and hips together, I dry fit the parts and got them into a pose that I wanted, then used the hole I drilled in the upper leg as a guide to drill into the waist. Fit a good piece of brass into this hole on each side, and the waist should hold very tightly together as we mess with it.

The feet are a far simpler affair.
Unless you are going with an incredibly dynamic pose, ie the warlord striding forward, You are pretty safe just gluing the feet flat. And man... are these things HUGE!

As you can see, I've put a pin into the middle of the foot. This will match up with a hole in the ankle I've already drilled, and should help with the final stability of the Titan. I found that the toes dont particularly need to be pinned, as most of the weight is balanced on the dinner plate-sized footpads, however with me being me, I put some small pins in it anyways. Nothing terribly drastic, just some more short shards of finishing nails.

Let this dry fully before trying to fit it together with the legs.

=================

With pins in place, its time for one last dry fit before epoxying it all together... Double and triple check your pose, make sure its balanced... This is the time to bang out all of the errors and issues!

At this point, I couldn't help myself from slotting the torso onto the legs and seeing how it looked... Even before glue, with all the pins we've put in the legs it very nearly stands all on its own!

Yaaaaay~~~

That's pretty awesome looking! I have always marveled at the sheer impracticality of the bigger titans as gaming pieces, but damn, they do look cool!

Yeah I have no clue how one can use stuff like the Warlord in game... Though they look damn impressive on the field- Few years ago I went to an Apocalypse game that had a scratch build warlord (scaled more like an Imperator, really), and a few Warhounds and Reavers... Things got insane once those things hit the table!

Next phase of the Warlord's build is probably going to be magnetizing the waist, then building the carapace weapons. Lots and lots of slow work- Mostly waiting for stuff to dry!

=================

Human component of the Mason team is nearly complete. Using Reaper Triads for the skin, which Im really starting to take a liking to.
Skin still is one of my weakest subjects, though...

Another Reaper Triad provided me with some nice browns for Hammer's African skintone. The paints gave a really subtle blend, so I think Im going to tap in to some Tanned Flesh Shadow to highlight his skin.

Yea, we used to play a big Apoc game at the shop every other month or so once it came out. It was sort of fun, but it always seemed like you spend 2 hours setting up, then first turn picked up about half your stuff and put it back before it even got to move. I think in the end, Apoc works best for planned scenarios, not "bring what you want" games. (Although we did have a good one where every model with an armor value cost double points. That actually worked really well.)

Those Masons are looking really nice! I will have to look into that Reaper Triad you mentioned. I have never been super pleased with any of the darker skins I have tried, assuming I want them looking human, anyway.

I'll help you out.. On turn one you point a weapon at the Enemy and it goes away.. Repeat till all weapons have fired or all enemy's are destroyed.
On turn Two repeat the steps in turn one. Any questions?

Actually, yea, that was pretty much it. We each had I think 6k points, with 8 or 10 people playing and an L shaped 30 foot table. One guy took a warlord and I think a few people took big tank companies. Otherwise, it was a normal army's worth of tanks for most people, maybe a baneblade or equivalent, and then pretty much all your infantry choices you had around. 6000 points of infantry makes for a much better game than 6000 points of titan

Epic titan is epic, gotta admire the skills it needs building pieces that large, makes me nervous just reading about someone else doing it.

Mason team is coming along nicely. Skin tones look amazing.

As promised, a mega photo update!

Probably my favorite of the team, Hammer!

Next is Harmony- This is one of the sculpts I just couldn't get to work for me... :/
The sculpts have much the same problem as many of the old Relic Knights stuff does, in that the face is TINY and pretty flat. And before you ask, no, she doesnt actually have little beady eyes... the light seems to have washed out the eyepits, so all you get is the black! I did go with a particularly pale complexion for her...

The other problematic sculpt was Honour. Same problems, but not nearly as bad... Still pretty flat though.

Much better was one of the newer additions to the team, Chisel. I hear shes a badass in game... Hopefully she brings good luck to my client!

Tower, who totally looked like Colossus when he was just bare metal... Was tempted to do an Xmen team of Masons!

Mallet, the season 1 captain for the Masons.

Brick was a welcome change from the small minis in this team... Hes big, hes chunky... Really enjoyed him!

Another Season 2 guy (I think), Flint!

Then the Mascots, Marbles the baboon and Wrecker the Armadillo! The latter I REALLY love... Its this weird blend of adorable and absurd that really tickles me

And last, but not least... The ball. Simple, but effective, I think...

I think the silver and blue works incredibly well and they are a really beautiful team. The client is going to be ecstatic.
