As promised, here is my humble first attempt at painting... (well, I did paint some horses in multi-colours, but I don't think they count )
I have another couple of wood elves lurking around somewhere which I'll get on to asap.
Comments/criticisms welcome, I know it's not perfect but I don't think it's too bad for a first attempt
The idea behind the cloaks will hopefully become apparent when I upload more photos- for anyone who has read the 'Song of Ice and Fire' books, the idea is loosely based around Renly's Rainbow Guard. I aim for each elf to have a different colour cloak.
Looking good! I would say the quickest way to give them a really nice pop would be to get some Washes and try them out.
Neat bright colours + matching wash = instant shading and depth, and if you put the work into making the original paint layer as neat and precise as possible, you get fantastic results really quickly.
It also makes highlighting very simple as you can highlight using the same colour you originally used, over the slightly darker washed version.
And good work, see told you it wasn't as 'terrible' as you thought, btw thought i'd let you know, am about half way through making the ewok you wanted, i'll put some pics up when its done...(yours will definately be....a unique army.)

hehe thanks! Someone I mentioned to about it was unsure at first about the pink, but it's not neon pink... so I reckon it looks ok! lol

really nice models, especially considering its your first attempt. I want to burn my first attempts, i wish they looked like yours. Luckily i have improved......
I second the idea of using washes and highlights, as this wil give your models more depth.....
i asked people to contribute their most useful pieces of advice, and I collected everything in the original post. I learned a lot, and so will you, i guess.

aw thanks! That'll come in handy I'm sure and lol about wanting to burn your first attempts! x
what I JUST realized was that you mentioned a song of ice and fire in the op. the cloaks are an awesom idea, i say! It inspires me to do something Asoiaf related too
have you read all the books? I just finished the fifth one yesterday. What an annoying cliffhanger! If Martin dies before hes finished writing the last books, I'll kill him! lol
For your first attempt (heck, even for a non-first attempt) those are a really great start. As Ifalna mentioned, getting your base coats smooth and neat is the best starting point and you certainly seemed to have achieved that.
Washes don't really do delicate as it's the pooling of the liquid that creates the shading for you.

Aw thank you! I dunno why it came to mind but it did... works for me as I like rainbow colours haha XD
Lol, A Dance with Dragons is sat next to me on the floor as we speak. It's such a massive book! Haven't got very far through it as I have lots of uni work to do :S annoying, as I just read the other ones none stop! Good ole' Martin, definitely not afraid to kill people off is he! lol xxx
Ah yes that remind me! forgot to post up a pic on here, did it on my blog instead =o anyways here you are, wavering as to whether i should give him a spear for you?

hehe thanks, it's nice to hear that they're not all bad! And thanks for the advice about washes.
P.s. J-Paint, heheheheh HE IS ADORABLE!!! he kind of looks like he wants a spear... looks like he should be holding something, but it's really up to you! <3 xxx

In the meantime, here is my latest elf. The Blood Angels will be taking presidence for a while now me thinks... nonetheless, I'm happy with the colour of his cloak the face didn't come out very well on the photo, sorrryyyy! xxx
There is a fantastic set of DVDs you could invest in that teach you almost every painting trick under the sun.
"Hot Lead: How to Paint Better Miniatures"
It covers basics in DVD 1, advanced basics in DVD 2 and advanced in DVD 3. Things like wet blending, layering, feathering, NMM, painting the human form, cloaks etc... It rings in at around 8 hours. I am just about done watching it and I already feel like I could paint up a storm!
Seriously great. PM me and I could work something out for you...

Hello peeps, sorry, no images to upload today. I'm taking my time with my Guard as I want them to look good! Going with blue tinged wings Hopefully he'll be up tomorrow or sunday Xxx
Well, it's been a few days (had no time to paint this weekend :S) but here is my first completed member of my Sanguinary Guard! I know there's still quite a lot to work on in terms of my technique but I really like the way he looks. Thoughts please xxx
im from around Mainz, wich i near Frankfurt.
But I travel a lot (with my family, parents are photographers), so im only here for like half of the jear. In the end of March we are going to leave for France and Spain, and later in the year its the UK and Sweden.
Do you speak some german?
oh and were in GB are you from? I've so far been to Cornwall, Wales and Scotland/Northumberland

Aw awesome! I do speak a bit of German, not fluent though I'm actually practicing it now to get better!
Well like I said I was born in Wegberg, but I've also lived in Herford, Osnabrück and Mönchengladbach. At the moment I'm at university in Norwich, but my family are in Salisbury- it's near Stonehenge! haha xxx
Another good idea is to put on the real edges a very small amount of mithril silver, (or some equally bright silver) It's pretty hard to get it to look right but looks lovely if done well.Check out one of the 'eav metal guides or there are loads on the tinternet. Look forwards to seeing how you progress =]

MrMerlin wrote:the gold on this one was washed brown, devlanmud I believe.....
A good start bubble. Don't make me think of the first model i "painted". I could have dropped it in a pot of paint, and it would look about the same. As others have mentioned, a brown wash on gold is what alot of people use (Sepia or Devlan Mud). What colour wash you use, especially on metallics, wont just shade it for you, it will enrich the gold as well, making it look epic. I like the subtlety of the wings! =)
Its all looking great. Once you start shading and highlighting, you'll be surprised at what you can do.
bubble wrote:Don't know if I should do the next wings in blue as well, or try something like grey? xxx
I'd do them blue again because the blue contrasts the gold nicely, and it might look weird if the squad had different wings.....
I'd try it on a spare piece, but i guess you dont have any.....
keep up the painting!
Yay, I agree lol. You're right, no spare parts... maybe I'll just have to buy more haha

aww, thanks for such a nice comment! Lol I'm sure your first models weren't that bad

It's quite interesting to see that a lot of women who start the hobby are far better painting to begin with than blokes. Must be something to do with the fact that you can colour co-ordinate better and automatically know what the colour "champagne" is... (It's a cream colour, just so you know guys).

haha, you're not the first person to say that, one of the members of staff in Games Workshop said women tend to be good at it. Lol, I reckon its more the years of practice in putting on make up xxx

Maybe women are better because most men are just downright bad at the beginning.....
I remember my first time painting.....
*kick open door, farts, scratches back of head* -murmurs swearwords- *throws himself on chair, wich reponses with squeaking noise*
"lets paint some orks"
*grabs poor ork boy, pics up brush* -thinks about color choice, for like 10 seconds- *grabs brown paint, shoves brush in way too far, smears paint on roughly the right location (and about everything else....).....*
8 minutes later
*throws brush somwhere* "methinks im done!" *holds ork away from himself, closes one eye and looks at model* - *is mighty proud of himself *
now, im not at all proud of these first 20 orks......
though the above might be a little exaggerated.....
When I started Eldar, I had never heard of highlighting, washing or even thinning my paints. I also only had one brush. A big one. Which I used to paint fiddly little gems.

got my first Orks for my 16th birthday, wich was in dec 2010
I think my first model was an uruk hai from the lotr when it first came out, i got really annoyed that with my one really thick coat of dark flesh and blobs of boltgun metal they didn't look like the ones in the picture. Wish i hadn't sold them on ebay for 40k funds now, feel i need to prove myself to them after i drowned them so unnecessarily.
Heheh, everyone's anacdotes about their first models are making me laugh Sorry about the lack of updates recently, just had a lot of work to do *Sigh* all work and no play makes Lucy a dull girl. xxx
My first models were the first "white metal" Wolf Guard Terminators. I was annoyed because the suggested paints on the back of the box didn't match what I'd done! Lol.
Hi everyone,
Sorry about the lack of updates! Here's my next Sanguinary... I prefer the first personally. I think the earlier one is A LOT better, I seem to be getting worse! haha.
This one is a bit 'dirtier' looking on his legs, which didn't really come out on the photo... but the reasoning behind it was if he's fighting, he's not going to look pristine. So I used quite a lot of Devlan Mud to get that dirty look.
I wouldn't call him bad. You did a good job on the gold, as before, and the wings look nice as well. Only thing that doesn't look good is the thick paint on the back of the wings.... but thats only a minor issue....
if you want them to loo cleaner, I'd suggest thinning down the washes.... but I haven't tried that myself, its only a guess.

Now paint the rest of the squad!
yeah I know! Something went wrong with the wings- The spraypaint sort of left them a bit odd in places, and then the white was all gloopy and thick ... haha it's not my best.
I did take your advice and painted the body yellowy/brown before putting the gold on this time! xxx
I really like the colors on the wings, I say to go for the light blue for all of them.
Don't worry, You are already good with the paint, just need practice!
SelvaggioSaky wrote:I really like the colors on the wings, I say to go for the light blue for all of them.

Aww thank you, that's sweet I think I maybe rushed this one a bit as well... Yeah I like the blue, think it makes the wings stand out nicely.
I'm saving the guy holding the banner 'til last, I reckon doing that fiddly paintwork is gonna give me a headache haha xxx
Looking good! The gold looks much more weathered this time, i like it. =] The thick white can be fixed by thinning it down with a small amount of water. I think your definitely improving though! keep it up. =]

thank yoooou
I tried the sepia wash at first but it made the gold look too... orange? xxx
Devlan Mud is the way to go. I use it on pretty much EH-VAR-EE-THINK. It's awesome.
I tend to stay away from painting bright gold. I paint dwarf bronze with a little scorched brown in it then wash with devlan mud and badab black. I then highlight with a mix of dwarf bronze and boltgun metal.

I quite like the way the gold looks but I might give that a go when I'm more confident xxx
Just remember with washes... if you want to strengthen the effect of the wash, sometimes it's better to apply it more than once, instead of one overloaded coat. That way you can build it up slowly to get the effect you want. Unfortunately in painting lil' toy soldiers, most of the time its better to paint multiple thin coats. Which obviously takes longer *grumbles*

Sorry about lack of updates guys, had a lot of 'real world' stuff to be doing :S
I'm interested to hear your opinions on what I should do next though- Lemartes, Guardian of the Lost or The Sanguinor? xxx
It depends entirely how confident you feel painting and which you'd prefer (also depends if you want to jump in at the deep end and paint the Sanguinor in non-metallic metals ).

hahah that made me giggle! No not dead just got so many deadlines *sigh*
I'm gonna do them both eventually but I want a Death Company so I might do Lemartes first... xxx
Deadlines? Tell me about it- have had 3 courseworks to do in 3 months and an extra one to have done at the end of this month. But I have a presentation on Tax budgeting and revision to get in too, which doesn't leave much time for painting Space Wolves...

hahah I know... it's just essay after essay after presentation... lol. I have made a start on the next figure though xxx
yeah, these darned deadlines..... dont we all love them ?-__-
lemartes or the sanguinor.....?
I personally save my HQs for the very last, "practising" on my other models. I haven't painted any of my "important" models yet.... maybe I'm overdoing it.
Anyway, answering the question: I'd paint the sanguinor (but all the other sanguinary guard first ).

On the other hand, DC are also really cool....
Yeah i know, I don't wanna mess up the individual figures but at the same time when these guys are done I need something else to paint... I may go ahead and buy a Death Company first...
Is it weird that I wanna make a group of space marines with skulls for heads rather than their helmets? lol xxx
Hello one and all, FINALLY have a new model to show you. He actually looks better in real life than he does in these photos but you get the general idea. Think I've made improvements in terms of the body of the marine since last time, the wings on the other hand are still... well... ok.. but the white paint is giving me nightmares- it's so gloopy haha. Went with a black wash again after trying sepia last time. I just prefer the look the black one gives the model, it's more exaggerated
Hoorah for new models! Your painting is getting better. As for gloopy white paint, it's always better to thin it down and do several (read LOADS) of coats rather than one.

I like the dark shading on the gold as well, but I've always been a fan of severe contrast.
Have you tried washing the wings? I like how bright they are, but I imagine a quick wash of watered down Asurmen Blue (50/50) over the wings, and then re-highlight the white one more time over the feathers would make the wings really pop. Maybe even skip watering down the wash.
It would also give you a reason to put one more coat of white on the wings, as there's a couple spots where the white doesn't quite cover.
I would make sure to keep the wash off of the top parts of the wings, leaving those that bright Ice Blue. Maybe hit the edges with a bit of white?
They look good, and they're fun models to paint! The one I did took forever though... but I was doing so many layers of gold... it was maddening.
@Elnibbus and @MrMerlin thanks for your continued support guys!
@Chemical Cutthroat
Hi there, thanks for such an in-depth reply! I did do a little wash on the wings, but I did it after I posted these photos so the model actually looks a little better now. I reckon i'll try an even darker wash next time though. Yeah, definitely needs a little more highlighting. And yeah I think they're great fun, but getting the gold to cover is a pain in the ass! xxx
Missed your update on here somehow, but its looking really good, that last one is a lot better in terms of technique and neatness. =] I agree that you could use a blue wash on the wings though, just would help the colours blend a little more and possibly go over the white once more. Maybe give it a go and post some pics so we can see the difference?
Sorry about the lack of updates guys, I'm going to be mega busy for the next two weeks so hopefully you'll all still be interested when I finally get round to posting something haha! xxx
Believe it or not, I am still with the land of the living! Sadly i'm just working through my last couple of uni exams before the summer, so I've had to take a massive break from painting :(
BUT, I am positively bursting with ideas and can't wait to get back to work! I've started reading 'The Horus Heresy' series, will be done with the first book, 'Horus Rising' shortly, and I don't know what it is but it's sparked my creativity and made me see things in a whole new light! I 'spose as I came into this knowing virtually nothing about WH, I'm finding I'm coming up with a whole bunch of ideas of out the blue... I'm actually thinking about drawing up some concept art of a view things...
Long story short, I want to paint a Sanguinius figure. But all the ones that I can find don't quite fit with the image I have in my mind... I don't know if it's just me being odd but Sanguinius strikes a chord with me as being a kindred spirit of St Michael... the wings, the golden armour etc, etc... Thinking about converting a figure of St M in the hopes I can create something that looks a little more like how a Primarch should look, in my humble opinion of course ...
Sanguinary Guard will be finished ASAP and then probably onto the Death Company!
Any thoughts? Hopefully some of you are still following this despite the long, long absence xxx
MrMerlin wrote:Oh, look what's back up at the top of the subscribed threads!

oh you didn't just go there, Mr ADD hobbyist The Sanguinary Guard will, of course, be finished first I'm looking forward to massacring the banner haha! xxx
Cool blog, as for the Scribor Sanguinius I would highly suggest it - it's fun to paint and have a nice enough level of detail. I myself have the old Ronin one in my personal collection (which you can find in my primarch blog) but have painted a couple of the Scribor's one for friends. If I can give you a little hint for the painting of gold armour - try to mix in a little purple or red wash to the base gold colour - other then that great work !!!

Haha! So I'm not the only one who's been on a university sabbatical then? Hope your exams have been going as well as mine!
I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to painting too-my Space Wolves have been gathering dust and now that I have time to paint again, I want to start a company of Fire Hawks Space Marines (I envisage loads of Sternguard/Vanguard)...
Good luck with the Sanguinius model, looks chuffing detailed enough to keep you occupied for a while!

Heya you, good to hear from you I know it's a bummer- and my exams are finished now but I haven't got any of my modelling stuff with me so it's gonna have to wait a few more days until I go home! :S
I'm looking forward to painting it I wanna redo my Sanguinary Guard's weapons, try and make em look a little more like actual power weapons even though I'm pretty sure I'll mess it up haha.
Anyway, I'm getting waaaaay to obsessed with Warhammer now (I blame the Horus Heresy books)... it's all good though xxx
Well all my stuff is packed up in the cupboard at the end of the hall with some bits like my Bran Redmaw conversion, Contemptor and Land Speeder on the shelves next to my girlfriend's cake stand...
Might need to sort that lot out!
It never fails to impress me how much Warhammer manages to pull you back into it's clutches (Should be called Clawhammer, but I think something like that already exists).

hahaha clawhammer XD lol I find it amazing how long you spend on sites, just staring at the miniatures you want... internet shopping is too easy, my bank balance will suffer haha xxx
hey bubble...thought i paid you a visit on your own thread now^^
the newest mini you found should be a good addition...
the other minis you made with wings should be a good way of training for something as cool looking as this... i have seen many femal painters specially that are very good somehow with wings and feathers... i dunno why... sounds a bit dumb but i bet you too have a specialised talent in that department...

I've always wanted to go! I was born in Germany but I've never been to Berlin :( I'm gonna see everything there is to see! haha ooh how old do I look?
i think i dig my own grave here if i answer that question... tho i bet you are somewhere in your ealry twenties i bet...
born where then? and you want to see everything?...hmmm... i bet you wont want to do that... berlin is in places a very stinky and untidey place... to say the least^^...and i should know as i lived in quite some distressed places^^

indeed it is! The only problem I have with it is I'd prefer the wings to go the other way :S

haha he shouldn't ever have had a German flag, MrMerlin had a German one and now a British as he's in England atm? xxx
oh and I left when I was about 3, and then I've been back and forth to different parts of Germany all my life- Army child you see xxx
May have to pick one up.
Wings look like an easy enough fix though, even if sculpting feathers is a pain in the arse.
Could allways sculpt robes over the joins though to make it easier i spose.

Trueeee, one of my friend's said much the same as you so I reckon I'll have a go at changing them xxx
I want the 2nd one for parts for GK's later on down the line So not an entire waste of money like my behemoth was, which is still sat crying on the shelf, unfinished :(
MrMerlin wrote:Oh, look what's back up at the top of the subscribed threads!
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
HOOORAYYY I'm so glad you're still following me Can't wait to share something with you guys! I just found this actually... I really like it, thinking it might be worth buying?
My friend has that model and uses it as a "count's as" for Mephiston or really just any of the HQ choices. It looks really nice on the board. So I was skimming through your post and obviously took note to the fact you like BA, do you actually play or just paint?

I need to find a good pair of wings.. something like that for my Furioso Dreadnought... Does anyone know where to grab a pair? everything I have found are either to bat like or attached to another model.

I haven't started playing yet, still new to this so I only have about 3 models haha.
I was looking around on ebay for wings the other day, I did actually find a really nice pair, I'll try to find them tomorrow xxx
@bubble when you start playing BA remember the trick to them is get up and personal and assualt as soon as possible. in 6th edition it's going to be different but who knows about that and besides that's a whole another thread all in itself. try thewarstore dot com for good prices. it's like 20% off on the models. If the BA's (like the assault or tactical marines) come out too orange-ish try adding a little brown (just a little) to the final highlight color. I'm not a art student, but the GW and VGC paints have too much orange tint in them for my liking.
£4.10 straight from GW Should be a decent size too.
Those are one of the options I was thinking about getting

Bubble, you change your profile picture more times than I change my boxers!
Are you going to to an army of Blood Angels at some point or are you happy to do the painting side? I find that there is a great divide between painting and gaming. Having said that, the first time I played with my Dwarfs (and the first game of WFB in 8 years) I got absolutely minced but it didn't put me off. I entered my opponents name in my personal book of grudges and swore to give him a kicking..
What do you want your power weapons to look like? There are so many methods out there. I still want to try power weapons using my airbrush, I just haven't gotten around to trying it out. Then again, I like sculpting better than painting.

Ah hobbies, they bring out the best in us.
haha this is true! I get bored so easily haha I'm not sure yet! I'm happy painting at the moment but I'm sure I'll play a game when I'm a bit more prepared xxx

Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more!
Thank yooou! um I'm not sure, maybe like how J-paint did his... I think one of his kroot has a sword that looks epic- I'll have to find it and link it! Tbh I think however I do it my first couple of power weapons are gonna look terrible haha xxx
someone recently mentioned he did a quite good power weapon effect by just washing the sowrd with white... i tried that and it looked crappy as hell...i am too searching for new means to get this done too!
lol, its quick and easy to do And your lucky, being a daemons player, 99% of the weapons have to glow or have some such effect, or maybe thats just me going OTTlol.
Automatically Appended Next Post: can i just say, and this may of already been covered, but try using some ink washes with your painting, they work so well
^that mate... but we repeat ourselves over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again...

lol, ill let you know what the sanguinius model's like Ordered 2 the other day after seeing em here.

Tbh Ted is the most normal out of all of them, and I see a lot of the problems I have as an average guy trying to find the right woman, in his character. and it really isnt far from the mark
and that is pure superstition bubble...i am totaly not guilty of dragging the lot behind me... they are in fact shoving me to the forefront!... well known fact.... the league and it´s backwater alliances are dropping in on a thread after they tossed me in it...
<==Real men don't wear underwear with their suits on
Anyhoo, I liked the link to awesomepaintjob's how-to on power weapons. I highly recommend the airbrush method for painting them though make sure that you take away some of the stickyness (word?) of the masking tape otherwise you risk tearing the paint off the sword.
Indeed cuz I'm just finishing up my Guard at the mo I just inherited a space marine on a bike actually, looks cool so I'm gonna paint that at some point xxx
Having a goddamn nightmare with these wings today... I normally paint them blue then highlight each feather with white but it always looks kinda... bad... so I've spent the best part of the day trying to make them look better to no avail. Now I'm painting them white and going over with a blue wash that I made myself... think I need to just buy a blue wash it'll probably look better other than that, I have number 4 pretty much finished xxx
Jackal wrote:lol, tell me about it -_-
Same thing every year, just not usually this random with the price hikes.
Also, digging through to find out all my daemons ive found a ton of BA parts lol.
No whole models, just random bits and pieces
Sigh, i dunno what to order... I may just pick a name from a hat, can't afford to spend too much haha. OOH nice lol, I found a load of spare BA shoulders today actually xxx
lol, what have you got for your BA so far? Thats what ive found, a mix of shoulders, heads and weapons mainly.
And since i had a full death company army ive got random crap like 12 thunder hammers 0_o
Just kidding.
If you want the wings to look good, I'd suggest layering. It takes a long time compared to washing and drybrushing, but its always worth it. I'd use a medium blue to base the wings and then mix more and more white into the color as I build up the players (leaving something of the previous one showing through, until the last one is a line highlight with white)
You can use a thinned wash to blend the layers together properly....
lol, i usually use maelstrom games since they are bloody cheap.
But alot of the direct only stuff is more expensive, or the odd thing i want is out of stock, and delivery takes 2 weeks.
I order from GW and get everything i want in 2 working days lol.
I have seen the new price! Storm-Raven, aka Chibi-Hawk at 66USD! It is the flying Landraider! So I guess for bubble, that means to get one now will run you about 50pounds-sterling. IF you decided you wanted one. GW strikes again!
AnUnearthlyChilde wrote:I deleted facebook. It's a vile place. 1 month clean of it now
Why's it vile? Other than being able to stalk people ridiculously easily lol
Viktor von Domm wrote:well i started but i didn´t get use of it i thought it might be... besides... i don´t need another board i spend way too much time on
its vile for the fact its a breeding ground of shallow self centred people and malicious gossip. it has caused me nothing but gak. Everyone becomes overtly opinionated telling you what you should be believing in and what you should be doing rather than letting you have your own ideas on life. it has become a perverted version of the ideal it used to embody.

Can i just ask, what is tumblr? lol.
um I don't know how to explain Tumblr, I only set one up the other day to see what it was like... Good ole Wikipedia says- "Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website... The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog, named a "tumblelog". Users can follow other users' blogs..." so there you go haha

I think I've worked out how to use Tumblr now so yaaay! however im depressed that the only comments on my ewok were 'he needs a spear' does no one think hes cuuute? lol xxx
I feel that the banter from Vik's thread is slowly creeping into mine... I mean, there's actually been discussing about painting on his thread today, its unheard of :O haha xxx
lol, while im not a power gamer, i do run a fatecrusher list from time to time, but thats mainly against things like draigo wing, and only so i last a bit longer than normal
Usuaully though its a case of having a few drinks with friends and a game or 2.
So random lists of fun models XD
I know, but it doesent help when thier unit of 10 paladins gets rushed by 12 crushers including skulltaker and a herald.
The unit seems to vanish pretty damn quickly, mainly due to skulltaker killing 3-4 on his own each time lol (gotta love 4+ instant death)
BA arent all that broken, i used to run a themed army though, so it was a few assault squads, DC in a rhino, 3 normal baal's and 3 dakkapreds.
Granted its armour spam, but thats how BA have allways been
BA armies are broken imo, as a DC list that Raven-rushes with blood-dreads. it doesnt matter that they don't count as scoring units, especially when everything dies to them
