As you can see I'm not very far along with this guy but it's a start... trying to decide whether to do the back of his cloak the same as Sicarius's, i.e. white, or try an new sort of parchment-y vaguely goldy colour... that's a great description right there

Post by: Wh40kPicasso
How's it sexist to call you a Flip-flopper, or are you referring to "poon." also he is a poon because he utterly fails at everything. How can you write the Codex Astartes the way he did and not be a poon? In any case...
After the death of Horus and the near-death of the Emperor, Guilliman assumed the throne and became the Lord Commander of the Imperium, which granted him the same authority as the Emperor. While the other primarchs looked outward, intent on destroying the traitor legions and finding new recruits to rebuild their armies, Guilliman cast his furious gaze inward, towards the loyalist Space Marines themselves.
Guilliman was in a position of immense power at the time, possessing the strongest Space Marine legion (Because the Ultramarines did not participate in any of the major battles of the Horus Heresy due to Guilliman being duped by the Alpha Legion, they didn't take heavy losses like the Salamanders and Imperial Fists.), the most political sway (He was noted for being the Emperor's favorite after Horus and Sanguinius), and more than enough resources to make any calls needed to repair the Imperium. What the fractured and devastated people needed most was a strong leader willing to take action and to resolve the problems the galaxy now faced. What they got was Guilliman... To his credit, like all deranged leaders before him, Guilliman was courageously paranoid FOR THE PEOPLE. The primarch of the Ultramarines supremely doubted his brother primarchs and their ability to stay pure for the unforeseeable future.
Hence, while he occupied the throne, he began work on the Codex Astartes: a work of pure insecurity and paranoia that would soon tear the Space Marines apart and make them more difficult to manage and rebuild than ever (it is rumoured to be based on an ancient Terran game called "Simon says", Roboute decided that Roboute Says was too obvious and went with his publishers recommendation of "Codex Astartes"). Assuming the worst of his brethren, and perhaps even his own men, Guilliman decreed that all Space Marine legions must be broken into chapters of no greater than one thousand, forcing them to act as more individualistic groups lacking in cohesive leadership. Imperial historians hum, quietly, that there may have been alternatives at the time. The people were shocked at the force the traitor legions had brought to Terra, but many were certainly more interested in being protected from the ravages of the splintered traitors than they were in seeing the Imperium's best armed forces made disorganized. One possibility may have been consolidating all Marines into one force, organizing them like a real army with checks and balances, but Guilliman would have none of it.
Instead, he demanded the fragmentation of the Imperium's finest, which was frankly outrageous to the other primarchs. Rogal Dorn even sought to topple the decree, risking a civil war for the sake of keeping the Space Marines as functional groups that could fight and act as a whole. In the end, however, Dorn was too preoccupied with self-doubt, blaming himself for the death of the Emperor, and he eventually succumbed to Guilliman's plans. That and those lazy bastards (imperial navy..) opened fire on him. etc etc etc..

No I meant poon silly was just teasing!
Good points -well presented, but who knows what any other primarch would have done in his position? They may have done exactly the same or, maybe even a lot worse...
I'm just defending the underdog here, everyone hates the ultramarines, it's sillyyy!
Sanguinius would have been brilliant... but I say that as a full blown Sangi groupie lol

the sword is looking damn fine i say... the transition from the haft to the very point is very smooth... and then to have the nerve to try those lighting lines on that smooth job... congratz! you certainly have some balls
now the only thing needed is to teach you to make better pics... the liightning swallowed a whole lot of your efforts...

Wow, I'm really impressed! You have got the blue perfectly so it really pops out at you without being too bright which really grabbed my attention, the gold trim is neat and crisp and the detailing is excellent. The only thing I could suggest is maybe blend the lightning on the power sword into the blue, that should help it glow a little bit more although you don't want to over do it otherwise it may distract from the rest of the model. Other that that awesome work and definitely subscribing to this thread!

I wouldn't be so certain, the Romans had crests on their helmets as well... below is a Roman centurion helmet with a red crest... I do agree with the fact that the helmet that bubbles bought has a greek shape, but if it was painted a tarnished silver + gold with red for the crest it should be roman enough.

I do agree with the fact that the helmet that bubbles bought has a greek shape, but if it was painted a tarnished silver + gold with red for the crest it should be roman enough.
Bronze was a normal crafting medium for armor for greek. Steal was that of the roman - started off with iron. Romans had rounded helmets with rounded check guards and grounded sheilds and rounded armor. They didn't want any armor bites. The spike above the forhead along with the narrow eye and gap between the middle of the face reconds it is greek and only greek. Just saying, painting silver wont make it roman.

hmmm.... that apothearian needs some more ... something that gives him that special smurfette look... ? anything up your sleave for that? and will he be mostly white? for my own chapter i´ve gone a general sandy or rather beige scheme... my apothecarian is thus a bit fairer in colors but otherwise looks matching the other SM models... if you are feeling experimental , then this one could be more light blue then white... would be something newish to set your army apart from all the other marine ones... by the way... my techmarine is discernible darker in its hue but still remains the colors of my chapter...

See that's what I mean, it's a bit boring... I have lots of odd bits around so I think I'll add something I'm not sure if I'm going to paint him mostly white or just the head... I think all white will look great but I just hate painting in white, find it hard to make it look good. Ooooh, the light blue suggestion is interesting! Thanks!

Hi Bubble, I've seen you posting on some other threads and thought I would check out what you are upto. I've had a slow day at work so skimmed the entire thread. I must say as a newbie to the hobby your painting was very good and is improving, I also really like some of the Ultramarines you are building too. I am also really impressed with the GS hair on the knealing marine, any chance of a quick tutorial? Have you started painting any of the other marines? Glad to see there is plenty of banter on here too!

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by hehe oh lord I could do a tutorial next time I make some hair... it's a very similar method to how J-Paint does his valhallan hats No as of yet but I'm waiting for my new spraypaint to arrive so can't start anymore until that gets here xxx

I do bronzed flesh first as painting the shining gold on black just takes forever to cover... then lots of black wash when the gold is strong enough xxx

well bubble... you are rather productive now... the left shoulderpad of the new guy looks very cool indeed... i like how you´ve built up theose hues... same goes for the head... you are really getting the hang of painting... somehow you are at a very good paintinglevel now!!!
BUT...one thing i have to point out...
would it be possible to either get yourself some shoulderpads with raised ultra details OR to attempt to freehand the sign on the right pad? the decal looks so flat compared to the stunning paintjob on the left shoulderpad... i fear the use of decals would let your skill down a bit...

Fair enough. I can sympathise that painting red is freaking annoying, I’ve been wading through red for longer than I can remember with my BAs. I'm looking forward to getting around to my DC, which will be white though, as I'm doing an Angels Encarmine army.
Anyway, keep it up anyway, looking forward to see what else you churn out. Any vehicles in the pipeline?

The Ultra's are lookin good! An idea for your banner would be to get your hands on some of that decal paper if you could find it (I have no idea where, but I have seen someone use that before) and scan your banner then just print off the pictures to go over top of the base coat for the banner. I've seen some very sharp banners and other idea's that people have done with that paper. Anyway just a thought

Right... here's a reminder of my models seeing as it's been so long since I posted anything
NOW... If I want to make an Imperial Fist out of one of these guys, it's going to have to be a veteran seeing as I only have them and the apothecary left to do... or, do I buy yet more space marines? It's a tough choice... I may well buy the other set of veterans as they're such nice models... Just voicing my thoughts I was at work all day, so if I get enough uni work done tomorrow I'll reward myself with starting on my apothecary xxx

Hello all...
Today, I've been trying out various yellows for my Imperial Fist veteran. This poor dude is a random terminator I had lying around, he's donated his body to science
It all looks terrible, but I'm thinking that the colour on the backpack might be ok when it's done all over... It doesn't look that mustard in real life I'd like to add lol. xxx

yellow... always paint yellow on a white basecoat...

*Sigh* then your doing it wrong
to paint yellow from a white basecoat, use bestial brown > Snakebite leather > sunburst yellow > Skull white.
or whatever stupid names they are called now.
take your time, and highlight as you would normally.

Rogue Wolves wrote:people who use yellow primer to get good effects arnt lazy! Just as people who use dips to make amazing models arnt lazy
Sorry But I'll agree to disagree on this one, because when you use the final colour as a primer, you get a colour which is unnatural and looks false. at lease when you start from scratch and build up the paints gradually you can see the effort put into the model. Its why I don't like airbrushes, the only time I'd condone an airbrush is for tanks. anything else is taking the easy option imo. I don't expect people to agree with my way of doing things, but you can tell the difference between what i consider the lazy way, and the proper way.

Post by: Rogue Wolves
Do you use washes on your models childe? Then your cheating, why not paint all the shades by hand I understand where your coming from, and I for one dont use colored primers because as you said I dont like the result, but airbrushes I think take a degree of skill and in the end, can make amazing minis

Washes are different, and an effect you cannot gain any other way. a wash used properly can be used as a glaize or to add texture to a model... your having an argument with the wrong person. Remember I did a degree in art where the foundation was both colour theory as well as practical application

OK Mr degree when I was drawing and painting a picture in art once my art teacher told me I was doing it wrong, to this I replied surly art is how the artist perceives it.
Do you not agree with that
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Art is how you perceive it. but, the tools and medium is always the same. a rock is a rock, and paint is paint. not matter what you do with those items, they will always be either a rock or paint. paint will always behave in the same way. it will always matter how you use it as it behaves exactly the same way all the time. so when you shade with it, it will always shade in the same way. if you highlight with it, it will always highlight in the same way. the only thing that changes is the person holding the brush when you know your materials you will then be able to do anything with it.
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
Yes, but to be fair people are learning new ways to use and manipulate paints and materials every day, so if people want to use a " simple/lazy" way thats cool with me.
However I do agree with your point on the colour basing, using varying colour shades to build up to the final colour does work best.

I tried that with my inperial fists and its actually easier with a black undercoat.
Also comes out a ton better IMO.
Or, spray black, then yellow

white makes all the colours crisper, but if you use black it causes you to use more layers which in the end begins to lose detail if you arent careful.

I recently started working on some Imperial Fists myself, I've been having a modicum of success layering yellow over a white undercoat then using washes to tie everything together.
It won't win any Golden Demons but it does a job.
