Mantic Games now has a Kickstarter online, initially to fund a higher quality standard for the release of Kings of War 3rd Edition, by adding extras such as counters and wound markers to all of the starter sets, as well as the production of an exclusive Vampiress miniature based on the cover art.
Additionally, the funds will go towards producing more plastic miniatures at a much more rapid pace than is possible with their currently limited amount of capital.

This kickstarter has funded the design, sculpting and tooling of 20 new plastic units, 6 metal heroes, one plastic hero and a variety of supplements and counters:
All of these new modelsare being given away free to backers, either as single models or whole units, depending on how much the backer has pledged.

From their Kickstarter Page:
Mantic Games is a small company looking to do big things. In June, we’re launching Kings of War – a mass combat fantasy battle game.
We’ve got the game, we’ve got a gorgeous range of miniatures, but you deserve more, so we’ve set up this Kickstarter so we can go about delivering it.
The rule system is clearly written, simple and innovative - Written by Alessio Cavatore, Kings of War is an easy-to-learn fantasy battle wargame that is tactical, simple and innovative.
The rules have been fine-tuned after thousands of games and hundreds of pieces of feedback from the gaming community – it is a clearly written game for hobbyists, by hobbyists that allows you to play large-scale games with lots of miniatures easily and quickly.
A fantasy battle game written for both the Casual and Competitive Player - With an innovative turn sequence, a built-in tournament pack and the option to play timed games, Kings of War is a fast and simple game that naturally lends itself to competitive tournaments. It’s such a good fit, even our own tournament organizers have been able to play whilst running the event!
An expanding Miniatures range at an affordable price - Six armies are now available – from horrifying Undead, brutal Orcs all the way to proud Dwarfs and stoic Elves. Each is affordable and models are simple to put together, allowing you to get them on the gaming table quickly.
A fantasy world brought to life - The compelling Kings of War world has been developing for years and the new Rulebook contains a detailed map of the new world and the history of the land and its races. This rich fantasy realm is one of war and bloodshed where kingdoms clash in epic battles.
Why Kickstarter?
We want to make collecting big armies as easy as possible and the funds from this Kickstarter will go towards bringing out new miniature kits quicker whilst allowing us to bring you cool rewards like exclusive miniatures, wound counters, unit cards and more – all the things we’ve wanted to do but haven’t been able to... until now!
There are a large variety of pledge levels available, for the sake of brevity, I will only post ones up to the value of $800 on here, and present them in an easier-to-read format.

- Shipping to the US, Europe and Canada is free.
- International shipping is an additional $15.
- If you order contains a mixture of items that are already available, and items that are not, then your order will be shipped in 2 parts, so you don't have to wait.
Finally, Mantic has confirmed thatall pledges that add up to $100+ get all the $100+ freebies, whether you pick a $100+ pledge or not.
For example, you can pledge $35, then add 3 boxes of special extras for $110 total, and still get your free orc chariot, map, etc.
This also applies to the $175 and $225 level pledges, your total amount pledged is what matters, not the pledge level, for the sake of determining what freebies you get.
Note - If you don't live in Europe, the US, or Canada (where shipping is free), then the additional $15 shipping fee does not count towards your pledge level, it needs to be on top of it.
Still blech. It needs some real goals and proper rewards for hitting those goals. No timetables for how the money would speed along these new figure lines. No benchmarks like "if we hit 15K, we can include wound counters in every starter set. if we hit 20k, we'll have the money to include wound counters AND dice for the same price. 40k would let us sculpt an extra sprue for more poses", nothing like that is stated anywhere, and certainly not so plainly. Just vague "we'll have more money to do more stuff". Yeah, no crap, Sherlock.
WHAT is my dollar going to do is all I want to know. WHY should I give that dollar to Mantic through kickstarter as opposed to just buying the same product through retail right now. HOW will that dollar affect the price or affect the quality or affect the release schedule as opposed to just waiting for the stuff to come out and buying it then.
As I said in the other thread, it's not that this is a terrible thing for a kickstarter, it's just terribly executed. I see no absolutely no reason to kickstart this instead of just buying that stuff normally, which I can do right now and not have to wait a month+. Kickstarter is SUPPOSED to get you interested, it's supposed to give you a reason to plop down money now for a product that doesn't exist yet and to make that final product better or cheaper or faster. The fact that this is such a mediocre attempt is what I dislike so much about it.
yeah, not like other kickstarter projects only plan one or two stretch goals ahead.
I'd **almost** think you're out to hate this from the start. almost. if I didn't know you better
As I said in the other thread, it's not that this is a terrible thing for a kickstarter, it's just terribly executed. I see no absolutely no reason to kickstart this instead of just buying that stuff normally, which I can do right now and not have to wait a month+.
I can put forward one possible reason, which is that Mantic are selling the stuff in this Kickstarter at a considerable discount.
For example, the $100 level gets you about $150 worth of stuff. The $175 and especially the $275 levels also have major % discounts off of RRP. I'd be happy to calculate the RRP of the different 1000-point army deals if people are interested!
By the way, about the comment regarding the $10k stretch goal for the werewolves from the other thread, pointing out that someone can just pledge $1 + $25 to get their free set of werewolves.. it was a fair comment, so I've backed the project, and commented on it to pass that along to Mantic.
They're probably not allowed to change that particular stretch goal now that people have already started backing cash, but they can keep it in mind for future stretch goals!
In the mean time, everyone enjoy snapping up your 6 werewolves for $26 as soon as this approaches 10k!
It's not even the stretch goals so much, there's just nothing really NEW in this for any of the backer levels. I love kickstarter, and I love supporting cool projects through it and I don't care if it's a big company or a little company, as long as it's an awesome idea. But there's just no real meat to this kickstarter in either what you get out of it or what they plan to do with the money it raises. The only interesting stuff really is the extras that you can get at any pledge level by paying a little more and they're exactly that: extras. They seem like the kind of thing that should have been the focal point of a kickstarter: help us make this cool stuff faster. Or the new armies, show us more than a concept sketch of a single fig, talk about what you plan to do with the army, talk about how the money we're giving you now would make that army better than if we just waited until the release date or puchased current product normally.
I like mantic, I like kickstarter projects, but that's the problem. This is just so half-arsed and directionless that I can't support it even though if it was just presented better or with better perks it would be the perfect thing to part me from my money.
I agree with Kalamadea - the Kickstarter is too broad (all of Kings of War) and lacks goals (the selling points are almost all things that are already being made)
To quote myself from Warseer:
Just look at Overlord and Living Legend. You get your own custom Human character, get a 1,000 point Human army and can contribute to the development of the Human army list... but only if you get 2,000 points of painted non-Humans.
What they should have done is a Kickstarter that focused on, for example, the Werewolves. Pledge rewards would be Undead armies, rulebooks and sundries and an increasing number of Werewolves, stretch goals would be aiming towards making the Werewolves in plastic, adding more sculpts and other improvements to the Undead army.
^ I have to agree with you that the information on the page could use some more detail and focus. Have you watched the video, though?
It goes into more detail, where Ronnie explains that they want the money to get planned models released now, rather than having to wait years to raise the capital to release them.
They have plans for the next 3 years about what they want to release, but this Kickstarter is designed to try and make that happen *now* and speed up the release schedule.
So, if you want something concrete, plastic werewolves, trolls and ogres (there's some cool concept art for the ogres in the video)... as the kickstarter progresses they'll be put into production and you'll be get the chance to buy them *now* rather than having to wait another 1-2 years for mantic to raise the capital to fund them.
Beyond that, a lot of the high-end pledges are directly focused on producing new miniatures for the human army being released next year, with one of them allowing you to personally fund the production of a hero model of your choice, and having it named after you!
Overall, its definitely more of a kickstarter aimed at Mantic's existing fans who want to support the company rather than going for a wider audience.
I'm not going to disagree with the general statement that specifics are best, because the example kickstarter I suggested when discussing this was "Plastic Goblin Sprue Kickstarter" - highly focused and specific, but I don't think that a general appeal kickstarter is bad idea either, as indicated by the fact that it only took a few hours to reach its initial goal. It seems like Mantic are just testing the water with this one, the $5k goal is very modest.. hopefully we'll see more ambitious and specific stuff in future!
Just watched the video - Ronnie seems incredibly awkward and uncomfortable in it. Probably should have done more takes, unless the awkwardness is deliberate to make him look more likeable and avoid him looking like a slick fast-talking slimeball.
SS - good synposes of some of the deals up top, but I think you should list them all - trying to work out what exactly you get in each package is very difficult in the KS webpage due to the way they have laid them out. You've done a much better job than Mantic have.
While I actually like Mantic, I haven't been shy of being critical in the past either. I could afford to go for $100-150 into this Kickstarter, but the only miniatures I actually like from the 4 on offer are the undead - which I already own a bunch of. (and haven't painted or build yet, and intend to use for LOTR anyway since I'm not a WFB-type guy so there's not much on offer for me really. I'd either go in for $100+ or for $1 (for the werewolves). Maybe if they allowed a bit more flexibility in the models you can choose from?
Mods - could we eventually get a Mantic subforum on here? What needs to be done?
I think watching the video helps clear things up a lot, as was already said. I think what they're doing is an excellent idea, and I'm happy to support them.

Mantic reached their goal in a few hours.
Okay. And? What does that actually mean? How can Mantic translate "people pledged $5,000 to buy KoW armies" into "therefore we should make X"?

Have you watched the video on the Kickstarter page? It explains the plans thusly. They have a three year release plan with at least three new armies, it seems likely more given the way they're doing humans. They wanted to give folks a chance to pledge some money, get some cool stuff (the rule book, minis, etc) and in doing so help capitalize the company, thus helping to push forward the release of the new armies. LIkely, it will also provide them with the capital needed to make more plastic sculpts which will be more affordable and that will also help the company in the long run.
So, we give them money, get cool minis and rules in the short term, AND help a company that we like in the long term buy pledging money so that they can start making future plans reality.

I feel the exact same way, i've purchased a ton of stuff from Mantic in the past including both the Undead and Orc army sets. But with this kickstarter im just feeling incredibly left out, i really want to support them but i strongly dislike both of Mantic's Elf and Dwarf ranges.
Im hoping they will add a 100$ option than includes a pre-order of either a Goblin or Human Army set.

He really does seem nervous in that vid, which is kinda odd since he's normally so relaxed in all the other videos he does.. think he might be reading a script in this one or possibly worrying a little too much about it having to look professional.
SS - good synposes of some of the deals up top, but I think you should list them all - trying to work out what exactly you get in each package is very difficult in the KS webpage due to the way they have laid them out. You've done a much better job than Mantic have.
Thanks, I'll fill out some of the rest, but only up to the $800 level so it doesn't take up loads of space, the really high level pledges are not going to be relevant for most. I'll go ahead and add up RRP's in USD for the 4 different armies, too, so people can get a better judgement of what they're getting.
Also, the $7.5k stretch goal has now been met!
Names in the book for everyone, and onwards to free werewolves!
By the way, if anyone is wondering what to pledge, I have to say, the $125 level is really good value.. the 2 army boxes and the rulebook are worth $195 RRP, plus you get the Vampiress, the Orc Shaman *and* an extra mini-rulebook and dice on top of that.
This Kickstarter is, quite simply, saying "Give us some hard cash to help us out, and we'll give you a ton of cheap stuff".
I really don't understand all the negative responses or confusion about what Mantic is doing with Kickstarter. While the wording on the Kickstarter page could use a little more clarification, the video presented spells things out easily. More to the point, this is the email I got from Mantic's newsletter about the project:
"Our three year journey of playtests and worldwide feedback is finally coming to an end as our simple to play gaming system is finally available to pre-order as a 144-page full colour hardback rulebook! We’ve got a great range of new pre-orders for Goblins, Abyssal Dwarfs and a whole host of new army deals, as well as some exclusive offers to any one who picks up the Kings of War Hardback Rulebook through our website! Even with the brand new Goblins and Abyssal Dwarfs we want to be able to give back to our community with more high quality miniature kits quicker so we’ve set up a project through Kickstarter, a crowd-funding website where you can help support creative projects.
To say thank you for supporting us we’ve created a great range of rewards - pledging $100 gets you a copy of the Kings of War Rulebook, a Mini-rulebook, an Army Set of your choice and we will also sculpt the Vampire from the new cover art and include it as well! We really do appreciate your support – we’ve a target of just $5000 which we will use to start pulling forwards our tooling, including production of our plastic Werewolves (and Ronnie has said that if we can stretch to over $10000 that's when he can really do more cool and crazy stuff!)"
Now, from that you can see that the Kickstarter is being used to fund their new plastic kits for the undead werewolves (a picture of the concept art is included on the Kickstarter page), as well as the new plastic kits Mantic are planning for the future; ie: their human army with angels, paladins, demons, elementals, etc. As well as their Ogre army (a small picture of their concept art was included at the end of the Mantic email I got). And there are talks of doing trolls as well. The Ogres and Trolls perhaps being a more mercenary force instead of a full blown army.
You can blast some of this as being "pledge us some money now and we'll give you some goodies and promise more cool stuff you can buy in the future", but, SO? I, for one, would rather Mantic ask me for some money to create cool new plastic minis for a cheap price point, give me some already made cool plastic minis as a reward, and then provide said new cool minis in the future; rather than certain other companies that tell me how awesome their models are and then raise the prices until I'm paying almost fifty bucks for ten little toy soldiers, and eighty bucks for a rule book. But hey, that's just me.
Just watched the video - Ronnie seems incredibly awkward and uncomfortable in it. Probably should have done more takes, unless the awkwardness is deliberate to make him look more likeable and avoid him looking like a slick fast-talking slimeball.
I've noticed in his other videos that he does talk fast, either too much caffeine or just excitement! Either way, I think he was trying to avoid that in the video by talking relatively slow to be clear and get the point across. I thought the video really had great production though, it was a jump up from their Youtube videos.
He is a great sincere guy, with a great company that started from scratch up.
How they managed to stay alive for so long has always impressed me.
Whether or not they need the money to kick start something new, or to survive, it matters not to me.
They never asked for kickstarter when Mantic first started, I would like to provide continued support.
They reached their first goal, congrats.
Mantic, keep it up, don't let the haters get to you.
Approaching $9k. Good for them. I hope they can get some new and interesting stretch goals up and perhaps some other options for people like myself and Mr Gutsy above. $150 and $200 are obvious spots where they could add in some other options, and both affordable if they could only offer something I'm interested in.
Maybe some "choose 10 points worth of kits from the following" -type stuff which would still allow them to value resin Mounted Revenant Knights above a set of 10 zombies.
I'll be in for $1 and some Werewolves, but I'd like to be in for a lot more.
The starter of this thread was unhappy that in the original thread people complained massively about Mantic doing this kickstarter. So he demanded a new thread. You can see the old thread here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/451684.page .
I still think that Mantic deliberately lied in its project description when claiming that the game is only launched in June when it actually exists for over a year. And that it is a misuse of kickstarter intention when they present a rulebook as part of the kickstarter project that is already on preorder for some time and has a fixed release date on the very day the kickstarter ends. And I do not agree that starting a new thread because one poster didn't like the critique was justified.

No, this thread's starter was unhappy about the tone and content in the OP of that thread, given that every other Kickstarter thread on here has a neutral or positive OP, as opposed to the blatantly hostile one which that thread started with.

I don't think Mantic were as clear as they could've been about the money being to pay for the sculpt of the Vampiress figure, but I also don't think they lied. The game is getting its "official" release in June, Kroothawk - to date, it has been in varying playtest stages, whereas this is the final version of the core rules, including the setting information which has not been present before.
Normally, I tend to agree with what you're saying, but in this instance I think you're massively off-base.
Additionally, if you disagree with a Mod's decision, aren't you meant to fetch it up via PM, rather than in a different thread?

As Schmapdi pointed out, Mantic have hit the $10k target. They've now added an update, with two new stretch goals:
Mantic's Kickstarter Page wrote:UPDATE 1 - incredible! we have already achieved our first goal and all the stretch targets!
We promised the fun would really start after that (although we never expected it would happen so soon!) so firstly - thank you everyone for your support[b/], and secondly [b]let the fun begin...
New Stretch Goals -
if we hit...
$15,000 - a free copy of the electronic rules for every pledge over $100.
$20,000 - we will sculpt the Ogre Army from the video. These were not scheduled for aged yet, but this level of funding will let us get them done! We will add them to the site with a buy 1 unit, get one free offer - like the werewolf offer.
If we get through these I'll think up some more - I will get my thinking cap on - and suggestions on the Mantic Games Facebook page please!

Cheers for that Kroot, Must have missed that thread the first time around. I didn't realise we at dakka were such tools.
Gotta agree with the squig guy there is a pretty solid difference in the "Hey check out the McVey Kickstarter", the "Zombicide" kickstarters (both of which look awesome and I can't wait to get all my Zombicide goodies) and that thread.
In a fair an balanced world each of these would be given the same chance of being advertised/promoted here on Dakka, so to deliberately ask for this one to be stifled through lack of updated first post (or force a non-interested poster to update it) when it progresses etc seems a little unfair.

This is why I say the current approach is bad. If someone wants to pledge money to get these Ogres made (and the concept art does look great in an "Orcs done right" kind of way), the only rewards above $35 are things they don't want. It is in their best interest to not pledge money, because we're already past the point of no return, but not to the point where the Ogres get anything out of it.
Kroothawk.. I'm just curious to know, and I'm sorry to ask this on a public forum, but did Ronnie Renton just kiss her or did it go further?
Amazing that the total has got so high already. Personally I'm a sucker for hardback books so probably would have got it anyway, and $35 seems pretty reasonable for one.
I buy in their stuff wholesale, so while this isn't the kind of thing I would normally worry about, I will still support the book and grab some werewolves. Got all the miniatures I need, but I want them to be able to release a whole bunch of new armies for the game, and then get more people excited about playing it.
I knew Dakka was going to have some kind of meltdown about this, so no suprise there. Good to see some calmer heads prevailing.
Really want those werewolves as stand in Crypt Horrors.
heh, near as makes no difference to 20k now (OK I wouldn't want to pay the diff out of pocket, but hey ) so ogres are on!
seems like there will be a decent deal for them too.
oh my poor wallet.
He went to bed with $1.5k remaining on the initial goal, then woke up, went to get a coffee but checked the kickstarter page first then had to forget the coffee and go make a dozen phone calls and answer emails instead.
$20k goal has now been reached!
Enjoy your free ogres everyone!
Also, sorry about the delay in updating this earlier, even I have to sleep sometimes, completely missed the $15k goal.
Edit: This is officially insane - by the time I'd updated the first post to show that there was a new $25k stretch goal it had already been reached, making my post out of date! $5k funded in the space of a few minutes.
Werewolves and Ogre concepts look interesting. If I were an owner of Mantic models, though, I'd want to see expansion to the current lines before too many other new lines were added (or perhaps at the same time).
Definite props to them for hitting $25K so quickly, though! Doesn't seem like they even know what they want for stretch goals beyond that yet
Well my initial small order will likely be going to $100, plus $25 for the Werewolves, and whatever shipping ends up being.
Having the option for Goblins would be cool for an army box. And I am hoping for Ogres soon so I can buy a bunch in to sell to my mates. Should be a good money spinner for Mantic.
GW prices increase, Mantic starts cutting more and more into their market. It's a win for me.
Mantic Kickstarter page wrote:$35,000 - Mantic Dice - we will change the dice from normal D6 to ones with a Mantic splat on one face. All pledges for Soldier and upwards ($35+) that have dice will now get a set of the new limited edition plastic 'Mantic Splat' dice instead. The $5 dice set will now be Mantic splat dice too.
On Monday we will set further stretch goals and post some new plastic projects that your funding will allow us to deliver. We will also update the available pledge levels with Abyssal Dwarf, Twilight Kin and Goblin armies and all the new units. Please keep the suggestions coming via the comments above, or on the Mantic Games Facebook and the Mantic blog (they are really helping!)

Yeah, people hate it so much they're throwing lots of gross green paper at it to make it go away! Tens of thousands of them!
fire4effekt wrote:and perverts threw money at Tentacle Bento too, doesn't mean it's apropriate for Kickstarter.
Yup, "perverts" like me! Gotta love some people's definition of a "free" market. People are willing to pay money for things that don't hurt anyone so we must shut them down for offending someone's personal feelings. Kickstarter is a meritocracy, if you dislike Mantic or Soda Pop miniatures don't support them and if enough people feel like you they will fail. But no matter what you say or feel, you have no right to want to shut down a company doing its business just based on your own personal perceptions. Kickstarter is nothing more than an advertising/pre-order system. Be it Mantic, Soda Pop or some band trying to make an album; they all have a right to use the service.
Duncan_Idaho wrote:Some people really just read the headlines of kickstarter projects, do they?
Nothing wrong with this one!
There are way worse out there.
You should have seen the original KS page, it was a mess. Scarletsquig's write up in the OP was by far more clear than the official KS page (and yes, we all saw the video). NOW it's finally looking like what it should have started as, only took them hitting 4x the the initial goal they'd set. Now they are finally including new stuff for backers like the worldmap prints and upgrading things like the dice. Good to see they're cleaning up the page and listening to feedback.
One piece of feedback I saw posted on a forum that seemed to make sense is that it might be best to offer the free werewolves to people pledging at high amounts, otherwise someone could simply pledge $1, then another $25 to get 2 sets of werewolves.
Might be healthier for the kickstarter overall if the $100+ pledgers get the free werewolves instead, rather than just the $26+ pledgers.
If not for this stretch goal, something to keep in mind for the post-$10k goals that I think we're well on our way to at this point.
No matter how much you may love Mantic, it would be extraordinarily bad form for them to start moving the goalposts in regard to people who have already pledged. If they have said "$1 +25 gets you some werewolves plus a bonus box of werewolves" it would absolutely slaughter their goodwill and credibility if (now that it's going rather well) to say - "actually, you guys, we don't really mean that anymore".
Sure, add stuff, make the dice more special, add more goals, add stretch goals, but you do notscrew with people's existing pledges with "so sorry, changed my mind".
In case it seems like I'm angry because you're trying to screw with my "cheap" werewolves, I actually haven't pledged anything yet anyway. I'm waiting to see if they offer something I like or something new at $150 or $200, not to mention waiting to see the ogres. It's the principal and moral of the thing.

Shipping should be free, I'd imagine. Just based on experience with ordering from their website. I'm sure SS will ask for us.
I doubt Mantic Would do that with editing the current goals, the only thing i think they would do is make more stretch goals ( hopefully with more mini's and better extras).
About the shipping, What I read on the Mantic Facebook is that it is free for USA and Europe,
But if you live out of them places it is about $15 ( what is cheaper then other kickstarter projects.) but someone asked about ti again on the facebook and they said they would see if they can get it cheaper (My info about the shipping is not %100 sure but its what i read)
No kroot, way I read it the rules for the 1.0 edition come june/july won't be free anymore, that's just for the beta they've been running last year or so. so you're actually getting something worth >$0
What I think they are doing is making that the rulebook (pdf $20) comes with the full rules and concept art, while they will still give free rules away but maybe shortend?
As in the video it states The mantic rules will always be free.

@ Kroot, you do realise that this is the 3rd edition of rules? this is the final one the first two was alpha and beta rules basically,
also if you look at the kickstarter page is that it says delivery is july meaning they will mostly be seprate limited edition rulebooks(im not sure this is my take on it)
What I think they are doing is making that the rulebook (pdf $20) comes with the full rules and concept art, while they will still give free rules away but maybe shortend?

This. Since second edition, the free download has always been black and white, and shortened containing just the rules and army lists compared to the full-colour rulebook with pictures and background.
The electronic download in this case, will probably be full-colour containing the background, artwork and everything else, compared to the bare-bones free download.
Yes, the full-colour .pdf download alone isn't all that great to get for $20 while a more basic black and white free version of it is floating around *and* you get the souped-up .pdf version for free anyway when you donate $100+.. which is why hardly anyone has picked that pledge amount.
I've wondered about that - and about the fact that the digital rulebook isn't included in all of the pledge levels. My guess is that the digital rulebook they're giving away here is a full digital rulebook, as opposed to the downloadable on their website?

Hm, is it on the actual Kickstarter page? I've been looking and not found anything. Great that it's on Facebook, but something like the postage for your Kickstarter project really needs to be up there on your actual Kickstarter page in big letters.
They should also offer free shipping for pledges over a certain amount - just like they do for regular sales on their webstore.

Yeah they have,
It was like the Abyssal Dwarf, Twilight Kin and Goblin's quite a few people requested for them Because they already had Dwarfs Ect,
I think its great how they are doing it, They love the community and they give what they want
Soo if any of you have any ideas or anything that you think they should do pop it down on there facebook wall.
Also Honestly I think they didn't think it would go this high. (I think thats why they are kinda not as prepared but im sure they will make some great changes.)

The so-called kickstarter text is so full of false claims and promisses, that not even Mantic is able to keep track of them. Guess that's why Ronnie is so nervous on the video. With that body language you don't need a lie detector.

A piece of advice - if you REALLY hate a certain company and/or its products, say your piece ONCE, and then move on if you don't have anything else to say.

This is very good advice. You've said your piece, and now you're not really making any real coherent contributions to this conversation. We understand that you don't like what they are doing, you've made your point.
The electronic version is the 3rd edition of the rule set, the hardback edition. The free rules always available on the website will be a small QuickStart rule set like PP puts in their boxes. I really don't see the darned confusion here. It just smacks of someone trying to poison the well. Thankfully a mod has stepped in.

Ah, thanks for finding that. I've often found shipping costs on KS to be in a more obvious place than sandwiched between a bunch of other stuff in the main column.

Dude, you're starting to lose it.
It looks (to me) like the first level is that you get an E-copy of the full rules, and then for the second + you get a hardcover instead of the e-copy, which they then drop back in again at $100+ in an attempt to "add value".
So from the kickstarter it looks like they've taken the feedback from people and will now be offering a Goblin army in there. Now we're talking turkey.
The Ogre concept art looks great. Very retro style, and with ripped muscles not flab. Should do very well.
Decided that my Werewolves will be Vargheists instead. Them leaping over the board can count as flying.
Good to see this doing well. Hope it allows them to bring a lot of projects forward so we can have even more stuff. What it does allow me to do now is to have goblins to pair with my Rackham Orcs. I loved the very old style 80's goblins, and feel bad that they lost their character along the way. Now I get to have them once again without paying huge sums on ebay to get them.

I already have tons of Mantic stuff (already bought some this month, even), so the only reason for me to pledge is to support the werewolves and score some on the cheap.
We will bring forwards production of our Undead Werewolves. If you've purchased a set in the Special Extras and we break through $10000, we'll give you a second set free, and then we can start doing some really mad stuff!

Not sure what I want to do. Stick with Champion level plus cash for the Werewolves, or go for the Veteran level to get the Ogres as well? I don't think you'll get bonus Werewolves if you go for the Veteran level, like you would if you ordered them separately.
It's going to hinge on whether they put a Goblin army set in the Champion level or not.
Loving the new options, and I can't wait to see how the Ogres turn out.
you don't get the wound counters or the vampiress but you get an additional set of ogre shooters. not a great deal, I'd say.
on the other hand, getting doubles there would be ridiculous.
maybe this will become a better deal when some more stretch goals are met.
now it's just having the book signed, the map print and getting your name in the book (whooptydoo...) but if some more free mini's get thrown in it might get interesting

They just added to it, you now do get the wound counters and the vampiress so it matches up.
oh sorry scarlet, my post wasn't as clear as it could have been.
I meant that contributing #35 for soldier then buying a few extras loses you the vamp and counters but gets you an additional 3 ogre shooters. which is actually preferable for most people (as a lot of folks won't particularly need or want that vamp). it's not a bad perk, just a little meh. then again as I said maybe upcoming stretches make it more interesting.
You get the signed lithograph of Mantica for a pledge over $100 too. I think they're going to wind up offering more and more for this as time goes on -- I wouldn't be surprised to see this thing hit $250k and wind up with a LOT of awesome stuff for people pledging in the $100-300 range.
mantics kickstarter wrote:$50,000 – Based on your feedback, we will design and produce a plastic Orc Gore Chariot and Fight Wagon which will be included in pledges of Champion ($100) and up for free!
If we hit this target we will also make this kit available in the Special Extras section where if you add one to your pledge, we’ll throw in a second one free!
$1 pledge + $25 that will get you six werewolves , But i would not suggest that .
The current best value for money is the $100 and you can add extra $25 to get the 6 warewolves also...
Then you have a extra army also... and the rules.... but thats my reccomendation

$26 for 6 Werewolves seems pretty decent to me, actually...
BobtheInquisitor wrote:Was your email about the werewolves?
I've pledged $26 for the werewolves, although I'm waiting for a response to my question about whether or not I get the bonus werewolves while still pledging within my meager budget before I go higher or lower.
I already have tons of Mantic stuff (already bought some this month, even), so the only reason for me to pledge is to support the werewolves and score some on the cheap.
Not so Bob, it was about certain grafitii all over my hardback book, even though I only have the hard currency to hand to afford the $35 pledge.
@Eldarain
Ohh awesome!, the ogres look pretty damm awesome,
Im currently thinking of getting the $100... but the $125 is tempting ... its hard to choose! xD
I've upped my pledge to $200. I wanted the 1,000 pt Orc army, but I really want those Ogres too. I hope they hit $50,000 'cause that Orc Chariot/Wagon kit sounds awesome.
Alpharius wrote:It sure looks as if you'll get 6 Werewolves for $26, though confirmation (and pictures of actual models!) would be nice...
Pretty straightforward on the KS page, and I imagine the issue with the pics of the actual werewolves is that they're not yet sculpted.

Any amount of $1 or more.

We've got some great additional items available to you at a special price. To add optional items just increase your pledge by the appropriate amount and we'll sort out the details after the Kickstarter ends by sending you a survey.:

I never noticed before - but that does seem like a mistake. Someone should mention it and I bet they'd straighten it out right away - I mean the orc set goes from 50 orcs and 10 cavalry to 80 orcs and 20 cavalry. (plus two big orc metal characters). The dwarf set goes from 85 dwarves to ... 90 dwarves. (plus two much smaller dwarf characters). It has to be a mistake. Because two dwarf characters and 5 plastic dwarves surely aren't worth $75.
Doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose of kick starter? All these successful big businesses using it to gain capital ruins the concept of the small start ups that it is made for.
Liquidice281 wrote:Doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose of kick starter? All these successful big businesses using it to gain capital ruins the concept of the small start ups that it is made for.
Actually it doesn't, look at other "big" corporations like Double Fine (Tim Schaffer's video game company), Steve Jackson Games, and a few others. If you have a project and you want to find people who are interested in said project, then you go to kickstarter. KS is great like that because it helps the little guy and the slightly bigger guy. Not everyone has enough money to play around with an idea.
I'm watching this with great interest, as my Vampire Counts army will probably be made entirely of Mantic figs, so I'm pretty excited.
It is what it is. It appears that KS has no rules preventing small companies like Mantic from using it to raise some capital. (6 full-time employees isn't exactly big or successful - though they're punching above their weight in terms of awareness.)
A lot of these small startup or even decently established miniatures companies and games fail as well. - Rackham, Starship Troopers, L5R, AT-43, Target Games (Warzone, Chronopia) If this helps Mantic to survive and grow, then I'm all for it.
There was a shipping FAQ in their last newsletter, which doesn't seem to have made it onto the Kickstarter page for some reason:
Mantic Newsletter wrote:Shipping FAQ Will I have to wait until next year to get my book and figures if I pledge at a level that includes a new model released in 2013?
We will ship pledges in two parts if there are new releases involved. This means that you'll get your Rulebook and all models currently in the range in one package first and then the new models once they've been made.
Example - With Veteran, you will receive the Hardback Rulebook in July and the Werewolves and Ogres in early 2013.
Can I have my pledge shipped with an order placed on your website to save on shipping costs?
Absolutely - please email us and we will ship it out all together.
Do I have to pay any postage?
Postage to the US and Europe is free. There is a small $15 shipping charge when shipping internationally.

Go back to the first few pages of the thread, this has already been discussed and answered at length!
I guess the '40,000' would P a lot of people off, not least of all GW (where I believe Ronnie was pretty well liked, so I doubt he would want to deliberately be flippant towards his old work mates).

Hi Eldarain,
Nice spot! It's not actually a typo - it just seems like the Dwarf Army box is a really good deal! We do a range of army sets that includes a large number of miniatures, and then we worked out 1000 point for Kings of War for each race - it seems like the dwarf set is about 1000 points worth of stuff and therefore a steal of a deal!
If you're looking to get into Dwarfs, looks like the $100 might be the way to go
Wow - that is weird. Dwarves must be pricey in game terms. I guess get the $100 set and buy the characters/extras seperately and get a lot more for your money!
I think the thing I like best about the ruleset is that units accrue damage points as the game goes on as opposed to removing casualties.
It will actually encourage the creation and use of unit sized dioramas. It would be a hell of a lot of fun to make a horde sized unit of Orcs or Goblins Scrapping amongst themselves.

And it also eliminates the need to see hours of painting being packed or put to the side as models "die".

It speeds up the game so much! You can play a game of Kings of War in a third of the time it takes to play a Warhammer game of a similar size once you're familiar with the rules.
Whole-unit bases are quite popular, a lot of people turn the unit into a big diorama, or just use the flexibility to make the models look like a more realistic group of soldiers rather than having them all in rows and column within the unit., here's a good example:
Btw, I've seen those huts before, and while I can't remember the name of the company, I can tell you they come prepainted like that in case you're somewhat brush-shy.

What is it about GW that people are willing to take risk of $26 for 1 finecast figure,
and yet have such trepidation from 6 never seeing werewolves for same price?
The $175 option is looking very tempting, but it seems it would be better to get three other people together and go for the $500 one. Save each person $50 that way
I can't wait to see that Orc chariot. $50,000 is coming up soon.

Can't say that I know since I've never had a Mantic mini I had to return three times because he was missing half his head.
LunaHound wrote:What is it about GW that people are willing to take risk of $26 for 1 finecast figure,

I imagine it's twofold:
1) You get the finecast model immediately, or at least mailed to you immediately, while the Worgen are slated for a non-specific part of "2013"
2) You get to see the finecast model before buying it, so you know what it will look like ("failcast" air bubble/miscast potential notwithstanding), while the Worgen have only a concept sketch for 1 model. And we've seen how Mantic (and others') final models often don't quite match the concepts in quality.
Duncan_Idaho wrote:On the other hand the same can happen to you when there´s no shop near you to check the findecast blisters.
Sure, but he was asking why would people be willing to go with one and not the other. Finecast aside, GW has an overall much better reputation for toy soldier quality/aesthetics than Mantic. I'm down for some werewolves and ogres (later this month) and probably some extra werewolves and ogres that come with even more extra free werewolves and ogres besides. I just hope they're nice models in the end and similar to the concept artwork....

Yeah, that's the problem, isn't it.
I hope a green is available BEFORE the Kickstarter run is over, because given Mantic's hit or miss record to date, I don't want to buy anything 'sight unseen'!
But...
Squig, do you know if there is concept art (even the one from the video) for the Ogres to put in this. This looks great, but is REALLY hard to see outside of the video (and would be a big help)
Also, for the $110... is it possible to turn 3 of the werewolves into 3 Ogres?
I think they have definitely been getting better of late. I'm struggling to think of a release, since the elves in fact, that has had much criticism levelled at it. Even most of the criticism aimed at the Ver-meen was based on the concept, or the name, rather than the sculpts themselves (which are actually really nice).
So, for something like a 'Werewolf', at least I hope so but I would think it will be pretty difficult to get wrong. And, by the looks of things they will probably be about half the price of the recent Forge World release.

Good points - and damn it, you've just about convinced me to pledge $26 so I can get 6 werewolves, sight unseen!
Sculpts for the Werewolves aren't done yet because they'll use the funding from Kickstarter to start working on them. Remy's stuff is normally pretty good at matching up to the concept. Look at the Corporation for instance.
Also, Kickstarter is for creative projects and not funding companies. Doesn't matter whether you're miss miggin's pie shop or Microsoft, as long as it's a creative project that meets Kickstarter's guidelines then you are using it appropriately. This whole small business thing is just a misconception.
Similarly, Mantic is small though, and with the funds going straight into Werewolves, Ogres and hopefully chariots and Trolls, the product on the market is going to get a whole lot bigger!

Can anyone tell me why one might purchase the elite bundle at 225?
I just compared it to a twilight kin 61 mini mega army that costs 175 and it seems to have about the same amount of stuff.
Get Soldier, the Undead Vampiress from the cover art of the book and "Wip the Half-cast" - an Orc Wizard Special Character, and choose from one of our 1000 point Elite premium armies:

1 x FREE 56 page full colour 2nd Edition Rulebook
8 x FREE Army Lists including 3 new armies, 5 special characters and over 75 new units
1 x Metal Twilight Kin Sorceress
20 x Plastic/Metal Twilight Kin Spearmen
30 x Plastic/Metal Twilight Kin Crossbowmen
10 x Plastic/Metal Twilight Kin Scouts
1 x Plastic/Metal Twilight Bolt Thrower with Crew
Mantic Guide
Loads of Mantic Points
Perhaps I'll wait till more Dark elves are released then. I love some of what they've done, but it really feels like the least value of all the buys on the kickstarter and the site.
What a wonderful little project though, quite heartwarming really.
@Lucre - It might be 50 dollars less, but you also get a hardback rulebook and dice which are worth 50 dollars seperately. Also, you get a signed map, signed rulebook, your name in the book, free orc chariot, digital copy of the hardback etc. as well as any other freebies that get added as this progresses.
It's harder for them to offer a large discount on metal hybrids because of the price of the raw materials, metal is expensive.
Whereas with plastic and restic, they have much more freedom to offer bulk discounts.
The $225 pledge level was added only because people specifically asked for it, and it has 12 backers, so there is clearly a demand for it from a few people.
Edit: Don't forget, the Special extras has elite army sets available if you want a smaller force of twilight kin:
Add One Elite Army Set - $95 Choose from:
Goblin Army Set – 1 Sneak, 5 Mawbeast Pack, 40 Spitters, 20 Sharpsticks, 20 Rabble, 1 War Trombone.
Abyssal Dwarf Army Set – 10 Black Souls, 10 Decimators, 10 Slave Orcs, 10 Halfbreeds, 1 Mortar with crew
Twilight Kin Army Set – 1 Sorceress, 20 Spearmen, 10 Crossbowmen, 2 Bolt Throwers with crew
Anyway, $50k reached! Enjoy your free Orc Chariots, everyone!
Also, Mantic is now asking current backers if they want Trolls or Mummies as the next stretch goal.

I'm not willing to do either.
Never bought any Finecast and never plan to.
I'm also very hesitant about buying Mantic stuff sight unseen due to so many of their sculpts being sub-par in my opinion. IF they look anything like the artwork, I'm all for their wolves for my Fantasy armies.

Same here!
I'd certainly NEVER by anything Finecast via mailorder, and I'm really hesitant about buying anything without seeing something other than a drawing.
Not really sure what is so hard to understand about that either!
I must have been really lucky with my one finecast purchase. Got the mangler squigs, no issues really at all and I also didn't get the issuer where it's collapsing under it's own weight (yet) like some folks talked about.
Don't ask me what Mantic means by "all of the new hero models that get sculpted", because I don't have the slightest clue either and would really like to know.
If you like the look of the sculpts, then yes, they are. The range is mostly plastic with full sprues of 10 models with lots of different options and extras on the sprues, and the detail on the models is extremely fine and sharp.
Technically speaking, there is nothing wrong with the quality of the models or their price, it all comes down to whether or not you like the look of them.
I personally think they look quite nice as an army, here's some examples:
I quite like the Mantic elves but then again I prefer that lithe, athletic aesthetic rather than the bulkier GW ones. I think elves should be wispy, fey individuals.
So at 65k - new hero models are sculpted (which is all well and good, and, like the chariot, something I suggested)
But I'm a bit confused about why they need their own seperate book to go with them?
Hopefully the trolls or mummies won't be too far past 65k. I also think, from a pure mercenary perspective that trolls would sell way better than mummies.

There is one special character per army list currently. I assume the supplement would have pages of background per character.
My pledge might be increasing again! Some great value - orges for allies, werewolves and vampire for my Undead, Chariot and a Gobbo army... Now to find time to paint it all!
Had to change my pledge over. I have tons of Mantic Undead, and not after any of the others, so I am going for Veteran instead. Unless there is a way to get the book and other benefits from the Soldier level by buying the book and the $95 option for the Goblins.
Eh, I am ok with it. Would like the Goblins, but just as much like Werewolves and Ogres.
scipio.au wrote:Anyone seen at least concept art for the Orc Chariot/ Fight Wagon kit?
I don't think it has concept art yet. The kit was something they thought up on the fly, I think. I'd imagine we'll have something relatively soon though.
I really hope the very next thing on their to-do list after this kickstarter is over is to start one for Warpath. I love the Forgefather and Corporation models (Don't hate the orks/vermyn, just not as much of a desire for them), but the restic price tag is turning me off from buying them. I'd buy plastic Stormrage Veterans for a stand-in Space Marine army in a heartbeat.

You can do this! Mantic has just confirmed that all pledges that add up to $100+ get all the $100+ freebies, whether you pick a $100+ pledge or not.
For instance, you can pledge $1, buy 4 of the special extras for $101 total, and still get your free orc chariot, map, etc. Although in that example you obviously wouldn't get the rulebook signed or your dice upgraded to splat dice since they are "upgrades" to things that you aren't ordering.
True. I just hope that once this workload eases up that they try and get some of their more unique sculpts (Like the Stormrage Vets ) in plastic, since the restic pricetag is fairly offputting.
EDIT: Clarification: I have yet to see a bad resin/restic deal from them. It's just that those models are ones I would need to buy in bulk, and while a deal for individual models (Like for an RPG), $4/mini isn't great when you need ~100 of them :/
It actually benefits them this way. I will spend a little more to get the book + goblins + werewolves now. Didn't know what I was going to do with the Ogres, but this is much better.
We've been running this Kickstarter for two reasons - 1) to help fund the development of new miniature kits for Kickstarter and 2) to reward you guys for your support! So far, every backer will get a signed copy of the Kings of War Hardback Rulebook and upgraded Mantic Splat dice. Everyone who has pledged $100 or more will receive:
- A free Orc Chariot/Fight Wagon
- Your name immortalised in the Kings of War Hardback Rulebook
- A free electronic version of the Kings of War Hardback Rulebook
- A signed Lithoprint of the Mantica Map
- a free ticket to our Mantic Party in September
But, that's not enough for us and, as detailed in this week's upcoming newsletter - we want to give you more!
So, here's what we're planning:
If we hit the $65,000 level, we will do a new unit every $10,000 until we get to $95,000. These will be:
At $100,000 we will sculpt the Undead Skeleton with Dog – and give one free to everyone with a pledge over $100.
At that level we will also do a limited edition run of the wound markers in blue acrylic plastic – and these will be unique to Kickstarter subscribers!
What's in it for me?
One of the challenges the Kickstarter presented is that we cannot give away extra units at the $100 level, it just isn’t feasible. Jan Novak however, has come up with a solution:
- Any pledge of $100 or more will receive one of the new figures each time we pass the stretch goal
- Any pledge of $175 or more will receive a complete unit of the new figures as we reach the goal, and a free limited edition Undead Standard Bearer.
- Any pledges over $225 will receive one of every unit – including the Werewolves and one unit of the Ogres, one of any hero model that gets sculpted as a result of the Kickstarter and the free limited edition Undead Army Standard Bearer.
Please note these are for values, not specific pledge levels. If your pledge is over the qualifying level you will get the rewards from that point.
For example: If you order the $110 Veteran and add a $75 army set from the extras you will qualify over the $175 level (you’d be at $185) and get all the $175 rewards.
So, that's the plan going forwards! Please continue to support Mantic and tell lots of people about it - the more backers we get, the more free stuff we can give you!
It's good to see them posting the next rewards - I've noticed the kickstarter has stalled a bit lately - and I think it's because of the lack of interest in the current stretch goal.
New units will certainly get people stoked though.
Just to condense down that last post a little, here is the basics of it:
- $175 backers now get a bonus undead standard bearer model, as well as a whole free unit of everything that gets sculpted from the Orc Chariot onwards
- $225 backers get all of that, and also get a free unit of werewolves, ogres, and one extra hero model!
$225 backers now get an absolutely crazy amount of free stuff!
I'm in the process of editing the first post to explain it all, going to have to add a large amount of stuff to the list!
I'm going to highlight the free models in red for each pledge level, so everyone can easily see what the stretch goal freebies are.

Well, quoting my post made it look like there was an error with my post rather than the kickstarter itself. Turns out there was, but only because I was quoting Mantic's error!
Well-spotted, Kroot - look likes they've now edited the wording it to make it clear that the signed rulebook and upgraded dice are only for people with a rulebook and dice in their order.
Gotta be careful with these things, they get confusing fast!
Anyway, the backing seems to have picked up nicely now that they've got a really solid plan up to $100k, should hit $65k tommorow at this rate, then onwards to trolls.
The free mini for $100+ backers and free unit for $175+ on all of the new stretch goals is a great idea.
Cyporiean wrote:Amazing how you can ask a company a question when something isn't clear, and they'll fix it.
On that point, could someone pass on my interest in what the "Gargoyles/Harpies" are going to look like? If Mantic gives the right answer, I'll be interested in contributing once they get close.
I personally am hoping the undead Revenant Cavalry are skellies or somesuch riding big dire wolves, as this will both be a unique model (Usually see gobbo wolf riders for fantasy minis), and serve to act as an alternative for black knights, dire wolves, and mounts for thunderwolf cavalry. I'd buy it just for skellies on wolves, but doing it like that instead of skeletons on skeletal horses would be a nice change.
Alternatively, they could do the Soul Reavers as vampires or wraiths or what have you on the wolves instead.
In that case I am in for $175. Likely that I will go for extra ogres as I can't see myself needing more than 6 werewolves at a time. 12 would be overkill. Here's hoping we make the stretch goals!
I'm going to have to rework my planned pledge, methinks.
The revenant cavalry are quite nice models, IMO. I don't own any at this stage, and can't see a way to get them without stuff I don't want/need in this KS unfortunately.
I'm waiting for 95k - well-done Mummies are something I like in an academic sense, but not in a "I want to buy this" sense. The "Gargoyles/Harpies" are either going to be something I don't like, something I like in an academic sense or the first Mantic models I want to buy.
Also, I'm glad to see this:
Finally, once the Kickstarter ends we will be in touch to see what your pledges were for, and we will try to be as flexible as we can be.
For example:
* At Commander level if you want 4000 points of the same army, instead of 4 different 1000 point ones (or any mix thereof) – this is no problem. You’ll still get all the benefits if a high level pledge, but you can sub in and out armies.
* We have two levels of armies – pure plastics and elite with metal and plastic – they cannot sub between, but just add $50 to your pledge level per 1000 points and you can upgrade from basic to elite
* If you have a request please just email to us on: <insert email> We will have someone answering queries quickly and we are happy to be as flexible as we can be to get you the army and the models you want.
Hopefully this extends to the stretch rewards - if you can swap out all those free Orc and Undead models for things you can actually use in your choice of Good army, that will do away with one of the big problems I had with the all-Kings of War Kickstarter.
^ They've answered that question on the Kickstarter page.
Mantic Games wrote:@ Doug - Andrew is correct, the $15 needs to be on top and doesn't count towards rewards.
$15 shipping has to be on top, doesn't count towards your total pledge amount.
Also, we're only $3k away from Trolls!
This thing is moving at quite a nice speed now that a giant pile of free miniatures are up for grabs.
In the Mantic newsletter, they've also laid out some plans for post- $100k stretch goals (these are just ideas in no particular order currently), so if this does go further than $100k, we'll see some of the following:
- Forest Shamblers for the Elves.
- Abyssal Dwarfs in Restic
- Dwarf Cavalry
- Goblin Mincer
- Goblin Fleabag cavalry
- Palace Guard in Restic
- Snow Vampire White and her 7 undead dwarfs!
I wonder if you can upgrade said badgers into honey badgers
Murdock129 wrote:Badgers would also be better because it'd be more unique, look at Scibor's bear riders, I don't see Mantic doing better than that, TBH
Yea thats true. Though AoW might give scibor a run for their money (of course depending on if their Indiegogo actually gets funded )

Oh FFS. Does every one of these companies have to be riding a kickstarter all at once? I'm struggling to be able to afford to contribute to both Mantic and McVey - and can only do so because they end in different pay cycles.
fake edit - wow that AoW one is put together quite badly in terms of value. The $190 pledge simply gets you exactly double what the $95 one does. And it ends in the McVey pay cycle. A real shame in terms of both rewards and timing, as I much prefer AoW's figures to Mantic's. I'll just buy the AoW figures later from Maelstrom et al. or not.

Next Q: What is the postage on the Mantic Bag, as far as I can tell, this is covered in the $15... but that doesn't seem right???
I imagine it is. The bag costs $65 on Battlefoam's actual website and costs $70 as an extra pledge from the Kickstarter.
On top of that, the postage is $15 whether you get 1 hardcover rulebook and nothing else, or three armies, 2 rulebooks and 14 Werewolves.

Exactly what I was thinking, I collect dwarves and hate Mantics but love AOWs and I bought some of their berserkers last year, fething brilliant models.
But I do like the look of Mantics gobbos, so Ive just pledged $225 to get a huge Goblin army, but if AOW offered better value I would drop Mantic in a flash because their sculpts are so good.
As it stands they don't seem much cheaper than GW!
LunaHound wrote:What is it about GW that people are willing to take risk of $26 for 1 finecast figure,
and yet have such trepidation from 6 never seeing werewolves for same price?
I'm not willing to do either.
Never bought any Finecast and never plan to.
I'm also very hesitant about buying Mantic stuff sight unseen due to so many of their sculpts being sub-par in my opinion. IF they look anything like the artwork, I'm all for their wolves for my Fantasy armies.
Same here!
I'd certainly NEVER by anything Finecast via mailorder, and I'm really hesitant about buying anything without seeing something other than a drawing.
Not really sure what is so hard to understand about that either!

Nah just lack of faith there Ken
Fine!
Add "The Faithless" to my name and call the job a good'un!
Duncan_Idaho wrote:OK, I have to up to 175, no way around it!
That's pretty much where I started. Even before they started loading on all the freebies, $175 gets a lot of stuff. It's even better for me with the current exchange rate.
The undead are actually very nice. Having said that, I've already got all the plastic Mantic undead I'm interested in getting, and none of the other plastic armies are doing it for me.
I think I'll have to get the Ogres & Werewolves set, plus a minis bag, to get to the $225 level. I sure hope the Ogres, Trolls and Werewolves are multipart!
So naturally I'd prefer to get a ton of the new plastic models so I'm looking at it and this appears to be my two options. Both will include the $175 bonuses like the free orc chariot and free units of new models (Trolls, Mummies, and Harpies).
Option 1:
-Veteran
-Soldier Stuff (Rulebook & Dice)
-6 Ogres w/Hand Weapons
-3 Ogres w/Guns
-6 Werewolves
-Vampiress Model
-Wound Markers
-3 Special Extras w/Buy one get one free (18 More Medium Models)
Total of 33 Medium Sized Models, $185
Options 2:
-Soldier
-Rulebook & Dice
-6 Special Extras w/Buy one get one free
Total of 36 Medium Sized Models, $185
So for the same I could get 3 more medium models but I get to pick what I want (including trolls). Granted I wouldn't get the wound counters or the extra vampire but I think this could be a better way to go.
Either one also gets you the extra full units so that's another 3 Trolls, 3 Mummies, Harpy/Gargoyle Squad, and the Chariot.
Does make me think. I'm seriously considering dropping in at this level before it ends cause over 40 medium sized models by the time it is over sounds great!!!
As a sidenote does anyone know if the Goblins will be able to use the Trolls, what a war-trombone is, and if a mawbeast pack is just 10 of the model that comes with the goblin?
@Alpharius - Yep, $51. Minimum pledge is $1, then you put the special extras on top.
Hulksmash wrote:As a sidenote does anyone know if the Goblins will be able to use the Trolls, what a war-trombone is, and if a mawbeast pack is just 10 of the model that comes with the goblin?
That is awesome of $100 - which army are you going for?
I've gone for the Orcs - am considering upping by $95 to get the Goblins as well after seeing those pics from Scarletsquig. The War Trombone is fantastic, and the mawbeasts are like Taz. I think there's 9 and 1 handler though, but not sure.
That way I can use the Chariot, the Trolls and with the Allies system work in a unit of Ogres into my list as well. The Undead stuff will fit right into my Mhorgoth horde!
wouldn't mummies be either 5 or 10 to a box, regular base size?
oh, and $225 gets you another box of werewolves and one of ogres (which they'll probably be happy to swap for trolls) as bonus. I know, it adds up but it seems to be an even better deal
I'll probably be going for a goblin army myself, now just to get some stuff sold to finance it... it's really a great deal by now.
Thanks anyway, Hulk. They're the only thing in the Kickstarter pipeline so far that I might want, so I guess it's back to waiting.
On your wish-list, Mummies should be either 5 or 10 to a set (doubled to 10 or 20): they're not Large Infantry, so they come in units of 5, 10 or 20, not 1, 3, 6 or 12.
Love the concept art for the Werewolves and Ogres - that's enough for me to commit to buying them.
I think I've seen the Troll concepts, and I like them. Plus, I'm a sucker for Trolls!
I'd have to see the Mummies before buying them - but they'll have to be over the top awesome for me to buy them as I really don't have any need for Mummies at all...
^ We should see some concepts before the Kickstarter finishes, Ronnie commissioned them this morning.
First post updated with the new stretch goal, it'll get clarified further as soon as the Mantic staff wake up tomorrow.
Worth noting that the $175 pledge level currently has an extra $90 of free kickstarter bonus miniatures on top.
If this hits $100k, then the total freebies will rise to $125... if it passes that goal, and 2 more units get funded, it will literally be $175 of freebies for a $175 pledge.
And before you even consider the kickstarter freebies, the armies in the pledge levels offer substantial savings from RRP, so I cannot stress how much of a good deal this is.
Also, it is looking likely that the first post-$100k goal will be Dwarf Cavalry. They have the concept art already done in advance for it.
I've been agonizing over increasing my pledge to get the goblin army, but I have resisted because I want the orcs more. Then I scrolled down far enough to see the goblin add-on for $95. I may have to unplug my computer until this Kickstarter is over...
Hey scarletsquig, I was thinking about going in on this, but would there be any way to incorporate warpath armies in? If you could offer a corporation army instead of just KoW stuff, plus the bonuses such as trolls and stuff, I'd add my backing tonight!

This and SW just keep wanting my money more and more. I already upped the one, I can't afford to up another!

Not sure about that, you'd have to ask them.. also, you might be better off waiting for them to make a Warpath kickstarter if that's what you're interested in.
Fairly certain they'll want to get some funding together for that game at some point since it doesn't have a lot of models at the moment.
So I've been looking things over and I'm a bit confused on one of the $100 rewards. You get an Army Set of your choice, but they aren't anwyhere close in points value. The Elf set appears to be the most by a couple hundred points (840), Dwarves next (600), then the Orcs (415) and Undead (415) are even at less than 50% of the Elves points level. I'm using Army Builder to get points values.
So, asking someone that has played (which I haven't) does that assesment sound right?
I understand the Orcs and Undead would be bulked up by some of the rewards, but definately not evenly or at the same time since some of the minis aren't made yet.
Seems if I wanted to have an "even" pair of armies, I should go up to the $275 level.
@Talon, points costs are changing in the new books anyway, and don't forget you can add banners, musicians and magic items (which are coming in the new book, and units can take them as well) to even things out, as well as playing around with whether you take troops, regiments or hordes.
Where I've taken the army boxes, added a pack of metal characters and just about squeezed a 1000-point army out of each one. (Couldn't do it with orcs though, and the armies aren't competitive, so the 1000-point option will be much better.. keep in mind that 1000 points of KoW has a lot more models on the table than a 1000-point game of warhammer).
I have no idea if the army builder files are accurate and up-to-date or not. I'll be releasing the 3.0 rules and army lists for battlescribe as soon as they are out (link in my sig).
Alpharius wrote:It seems as if there probably some other option I should select that would get me that and a lot more?
That's correct. Do you want 12 of any of those? Going up to $101 would get you 13/7/7 of those, an Orc chariot, a Mummy, an electronic copy of the big rulebook and some free character models.
^ Incorrect. No free characters at the $100 level currently, but you do get a Troll.
It's all in the first post
Basically,
- hit $100+ total and get all the stuff listed at the $100+ level.
- hit $175+ total and get all the stuff listed at the $175+ level.
- hit $225+ total and get all the stuff listed at the $225+ level.
Simple as that.
If you can find another $25 of stuff that you want to buy, then you'll get the big pile of $100+ freebies (you won't get a signed rulebook or upgraded dice though, if you don't have any in your order).
Oh, I was referring to my post when I said it was simple. :p
I agree that the kickstarter page itself has started to get extremely long-winded, which is why I've been having to throw out links to my post here on Dakka quite a lot, so that people can go, "I'm paying $100, what do I get?" and just look at a list rather than having to decipher the kickstarter page.
I'm torn on what to do. I'd rather have the Orc army, but I'm really liking the $175 starter. With the Orcs, they could do double duty between Kings of War and WHFB.

Because apparently I am blind to it, where does it say that the $100 pledge level gets me all of that stuff?
