Which special character is your favourite? This probably already exists somewher, but in case it doesn't, it can be based on fluff, tabletop, whatever.
Personally, it's close between Ghazghkull Thraka, Logan Grimnar, Arjac Rockfist and Njal Stormcaller.
I can not lock down one favorite, but fluff speaking for the codexes I would say - IG - Yarrick (what a survivor) , Eldar - Eldrad , Chaos Marines - Ahriman oh yeah, Chaos Daemons - Fateweaver and Tzeench in general, Orks - Ghazgul Mag Uhlrik Thrakka and Mad Doc and Old Zoggy and the old Second edition Runtherder that made Super Grots! , Grey Knights - Coteaz (though I hate his falcon.. ), Tau - Farsight, Squats - the Trike riders, Harlequins - The Solitare, Dark Eldar - The Duke, Slann - they look like toads how can they not be cool! , Blood Angels - good old Mephy, Space Wolves - Lucas and Grimnar, Sisters - St. Celestine, Necrons - the Original Ctan Nightbringer... Did I forget anyone... lol

I always attributed Ragnar's lack of Terminator armor to his own style. He's always been someone who lived on speed and instincts rather than relying on armor and toughness. In addition, since he went to the Wolf Guard straight from being a Blood Claw, he never picked up the flexibility to really make effective use of all the weapon options available to a wearer of Terminator warplate.
Pasanius and the other sidekick guy whos name I can never remember from the Salamanders books. I like that they are even bigger than normal marines and are both super cool.
Typhus is the only only CSM to actually exceed his primarch in favour from his god. That's right grandfather burgle actually likes typhus more than Mortarion. His entire ship the Terminus Est was infected by nurgles most potent disease the destroyer hive. The destroyer hive killed every single person on the ship except typhus, it actually lives in his body/armour now as a symbiot. Typhus is also one of those rare few who was kindof and evil dude from the very start.
Yarrick is really hard to deny, I mean the guys arm got cut off by an ork war boss so he killed the war boss and took his arm.
Purely fluff wise though I have to throw Sevetar of the Night lords in as well. He was considered one of the three most dangerous close combat fighters during the heresy. He is pure f&@$ing evil and he coined the phrase 'death to the false emperor'
I could probably name more that are bad ass as hell but ill stick with those 3 as they are the first that came to mind.
Decent fluff behind him(spear's name is cheesy), fits perfectly with my corsair army (love the IA11 corsair book), one of the most cost effective melee units, and such a badass that he can simply stare you to death in 6th with his bale eye (all wounds in challenges are allocated to the one model he is challenging).

aren't all wounds in challenges always allocated to the model he is challenging?
I like Harker. He makes his unit work real well for me. Payback doesnt always work well, but the characteristics he brings to the unit works well with my army.
Oh great Lord Slaanesh, send forth your servant, the Daemon Prince Doomrider!
Let our enemies tremble in ruptured awe before his fearsome visage!
Grant them an exquisite death, crushed beneath the flaming wheels of his chromium steed!
Permit them the ecstasy of being slaughtered by Doomrider's throbbing Daemonsword and his pulsating gun of gushing plasma!
Bestow on them one fleeting moment of pleasure as they stare in wonder and orgasmic delight at one of your most divine creations before dying at his hand!
Oh great Lord Slaanesh, for these reasons and many others that tease and titillate our imaginations, we beseech you, send forth your servant, the Daemon Prince Doomrider!
My favorite character is an old out of date one, but I think is quite unique. It's Nuadhu "Fireheart" from the 3rd edition Eldar codex.
A Saim-Hann commander riding into battle on the back of a Vyper, which has been modified into a chariot so he can fight from it's back with a spear. Sure, he has the downside the weak armor of a Vyper, but fights in close combat like a Dreadnought, can ignore Stunned and Shaken vehicle results, in addition to being a Vyper with the hit-and-run abilities of a Guardian jetbike, and being able to lead a jetbike squadron and make them ignore pinning and never fall back.
I never understood why he never made the translation to the latest Codex, though my friendly games still include him, with house rules.
For 70 points, that's not nearly half bad for an Eldar army, especially as I field a "Corsair" army that closely follows Saim-hann teachings, so he makes a "commander" that's much more fluffy than just an Autarch/Farseer on a Jetbike.
I'll list my favorite character separated by each codex/army.
Space Marines: Torias Telion
Blood Angels: Gabriel Seth
Space Wolves: Bjorn the Fell-Handed
Dark Angels: Belial
Black Templars: High Martial Helbrecht
Imperial Guard: More or less between Straken, Yarrick, and Chenkov
Sisters of Battle: Eh. In 3e Witchhunters it would have been Karamazov, but him getting the boot has made this choice nigh-impossible for me. I know relatively little of Sisters fluff.
Grey Knights: Excluding Karamazov, probably Stern I guess.
Orks: Kaptin melon-fething Badrukk.
Eldar: Maugan Ra
Dark Eldar: Drazhar
Necrons: Imhotek the Stormlord and the Deceiver
Tau: Commander "Farsight" O'Shavah (As if it could be anyone else)
Tyranids: Deathleaper
Chaos Daemons: Aetaos'rau'keres
Chaos Marines: Ahriman
Straken. Because of his fluff (I do not own the model). The man has been dragged back home from the battlefield to be fixed up again and again aand he always goes back and is pretty much "one of the guys".
Personaly I realy like typhus for his fluff and in-game performance. I also quite like the doom of ma'lenti (I know that's the wrong spelling) and col.straken.
I already said that Straken was my favorite but why not go for the favorites from all the three of my armies. So...
Marines: Kantor. I like his fluff but especially his rules as he has not been made into a one man army as almost every marine special character but instead a good leader type character and actually has a decent gun.
Dark Eldar: Lady Malys. The fluff makes her sound so awesome.
And just for the record Kantor is the only one of these three that I actually use in my lists.
Mine personally is either Phosis T'Kar of the thousand sons or The Primarch Sanguinius. Both amazingly powerful, cool and tragic figures. P.S everybody knows if he had given into the warps power Phosis was going to kill Leman Russ
Honsou. He is such a bastard but can't help but love the bastard. I liked him from the Ultramarine books and even more from the Iron Warrior Omnibus. He is just all that I think a Iron Warrior should be. If I ever do another Chaos army it is going to be the Iron warriors just so I can have him in it.

Ba'ken was the Salamander. Pasanius was super cool
rabid1903 wrote: Though definitely not the best out there, I'm a sucker for Kayvaan Shrike.
Fluff-wise, he's a great character. Cunning tactician, master of guerrilla warfare, and a sucker for hopeless causes. I like how there's a few marines out there that took their vows to defend humanity to include all innocent humans, even those abandoned by the Imperium.
From codices:
Marines-Shrike
Blood Angels-Dante(With him being chapter master for 1000 ish years, I need to do a conversion of him yelling at scouts on his lawn)
Space Wolves-Don't know enough to decide
Grey Knights-None
Dark Angels-none really, sammael because he has either an AV14 land speeder or a jetbike
Black Templars-Grimaldus
IG-Creed
Chaos Marines-Ahriman-Typhus is cool and Kharn is a great guy, but Ahriman appeals to me (Egyptian+Socreror+Space Marine+Mind Lasers=Awesome)
Chaos Daemons-None
Tyranids-None
Tau-Maybe once they have a broadside special character
Eldar/Dark Eldar-none
From BL/fluff
Garro
Sigismund
Tankred
Olianus Pius
Though you'll probably never see him in a game ever again(as if you did in his prime really), my favorite character will ALWAYS be Aun'Shi of the Tau original Codex. A total Tau badass
In game: Huron, as I thoroughly like his background, of becoming the thing he fought to stop, and proving that the smart man isn't always the right man for the Imperium.
After him, the delightfully confused Zahndrek, though Trazyn the Infinite is also interesting. I've actually liked the backstories to the new Necron characters, though Imhotek is somewhat bland.
In the wider universe, likely between Cain and Eisenhorn. However, that's heavily influenced by the writing style of the books they're involved in; very personal, the way Cain views the world is incredibly amusing; everyone and everything is potential cover or something which may kill him. And Eisenhorn, well that man needs no introduction.
The Gaunt's Ghosts characters are, on the whole, quite good, but they're often just a little too heroic for me to really love them. There's a few flawed but noble characters, and some really messed up ones; they're well written, but feel just a little too artificial at times.

I know that someone will probably kill me for this, but: who is Eisenhorn?
He's the main character from the Dan Abnett series of the same name. An Imperial Inquisitor who's adventures take him from being a young spotless Inquisitor, and then misfortune and the need to do what he must to overcome evil leads him down the darker paths of being a radical.
Characters who are actually fieldable in armies, I suspect. I actively based my list only on such nonsense.
Allowing characters from outside the rulebooks though, my all-time favorite is undoubtedly Magnus the Red, but like Manchu I like at least most of the Primarchs, with Magnus followed by Lorgar, the Lion, Perturabo, Fulgrim, Angron, and Leman Russ (Oho indeed).
Magnus IMO captured that classic mythological, tragic greek demigod feel better than the others.
Also... I'd really like to cite Ollanius Pius. I really would.
Spoiler:
Then, Know No Fear made him a fething Highlander, or maybe the 40k version of The Doctor. Such a monumently stupid change in an otherwise mostly solid book (It had other problems, but this is the most offensive). Pius's appeal was that he was a normal human, who had the sheer heroic resolve to stand up to Horus, a demigod with the full might of Chaos coursing through his very being, in defense of the wounded Emperor, knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he would die, but doing the right, the heroic thing anyway.
Now, apparently he's some 30,000+ old immortal who travels the galaxy.
Somedude593 wrote: Ollanius Pius... and after that. CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 things: firstly, who is Ollanius Pius? Secondly, Creed isn't all that tough. What is it, 5+ save? Is he even an Eternal Warrior? (You're probably going on fluff. I know, I'm contradicting myself, but on tabletop, when used wisely, he is a B.I.T.C.H.).
Ollanius Pius is a guardsman who stood in the path of Horus the Betrayer, defending the Emperor who was laid low. Horus quickly flayed him with a glance, but this motivated the Emperor to destroy his wayward son, convincing himself that Horus was gone, replaced by Chaos wholly.
Magnus, Ahriman, Garviel Loken, Koriel Zeth, Trazyn the Infinite jerkwad, Leman Russ, Vulcan....I want all of these people together for a BBQ. I will cook up some chicken and make some Primarch Punch. Everyone else has to bring sides. Russ is not allowed to bring booze. He'll also have to agree to no fighting with Magnus and Ahriman....and also Ahriman and Magnus are going to have to agree to keep it civil. Also, no one loan their cell phone to Trazyn. We all know what's going to happen and none of us are going to feel bad for you or get you out of that Thai prison.
Harald Deathwolf is my personal fave. Hence my Harald Deathwolf space wolf army. I really liked the short story in WD where he hunts down a traitor Wolf Lord.

Of course people are going off fluff when they mention him. He has awsome fluff.
Someone already replied with who is Pius so no need to respond there
Draigo of the Grey Knights sounds like an elite badass, he seems very overpowered for his being trapped in the warp killing thousands if not millions of daemons of all sizes. Seems like he would be the next Emperor(here come the heretic posts...) Seems cool to find few characters who have a strong mind to resist the warp.
Gabriel Angelos, I would have to add him to the list of my personal favorite badasses. He's lead his Company into many, many battles and campaigns, saving his chapter from complete devastation, killing daemons with a single swing of his hammer, etc. Plus, he IS the Chapter Master of my favorite chapter, the Blood Ravens ^.-.
Abbadon the Despoiler... For the conquer of all of Cadian Gate in the 13th Black Crusade, owning a warship that can destroy planets, I don't need to explain why I love him.
Kharn the Betrayer. I love the bloodlust he causes, he is special type of 'insane' or 'crazy' who probably doesn't need armor repainting, just let the blood do the painting itself.
That is my list of my favorite characters. There are lots more, but too many to name. Warhammer 40K is rich of many, many characters, there is probably a character for everyone in the world.
Urien Rakarth, the frankenstein of 40,000. He is a mafia boss, king of the hill undisputed, so he goes out to battle because its fun and gives him an excuse to play with his toys.
Who are all of those people? I know Magnus, Huron, Ahriman, Kell, Garro, Eisenhorn, Khârn, and Omegon bu who are the characters in the list that I have not mentioned?

Garviel Loken - 10th Captain of the Luna Wolves before Horus initiated the Heresy. He's the main character in the first three HH books (Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy In Flames).
Tarik Torgaddon - 2nd Captain of the Luna Wolves before Horus initiated the Heresy. He's a big character in the first three HH books.
Jenniker Solam - Venenum Assassin who was sent to assassinate Horus in the book, Nemesis.
Saul Tarvitz - Captain of the Emperor's Children before Horus initiated the Heresy. He's big in the first three HH books.
Mersadie Oliton - Personal Remembrancer of Loken during the first three books of the Horus Heresy.
Lorgar Aurelian - Primarch of the Word Bearers.
Drazhar: Probably the Striking Scorpions Phoenix Lord, but I love how the other Dark Eldar view him- an executioner, never given an official ranking. Barely even acknowledges the other Dark Eldar, but consistently fights with them for the right price. He has to be one of the most mysterious characters in 40k- it's very likely that he's Arhra (you can even spell 'Arhra' from the letters of 'Drazhar'), but there's no real inclination of WHY he turned his back on the Craftworlds, where he disappeared to, what he did while he was missing, or why he is back now. (That, and 6th edition made him not-useless again, thank god for 2+ saves and AP2 melee weapons).
Asmodai: DA Interrogator-Chaplains are already scary enough, but Asmodai is portrayed so well in the older codex. Honestly, if you were captured in 40k I don't know what's worse- interrogated by Asmodai and the Blades of Reason or handed over to Rakarth in Commorragh
Would totally play Dark Angels if I didn't have 5k of BA, and I'd have said that long before we knew about a new Dex- always liked them and I'm glad they're getting a new Codex to breathe some life back in.
I'm also starting to read the HH books, and Loken is quite an interesting character. Seeing how Abaddon was before the heresy is interesting as well.
Saint Celestine, for the model. Loved her model so much that I was using her even in the Witch Hunters Codex.
Then I made it even better by giving her a Sanguinary Guard jump pack with the angel wings in place of her halo and cherub-hoisted cloth backdrop. As a bonus, it also made the model lighter and improved its balance.
And these days, I include her in every list I make, cause she's an Ork-murdering slaughterhouse. It's especially fun when she gets close to an Ork mob, torches a bunch, kills a few in melee, dies, pops back up, and rinse and repeat.
Sometimes I get unlucky with the intervention rolls and she stays down for most of the game, but in general she's a killing machine.
I have to say I really like Trazyn the Infinite. Say what you will about Matt Ward but a 60 million year old Robotic version of Indiana Jones with a penchant for trapping Inquisitors in devices designed to hold star gods is a delightful character.
Soul Hunter / Talos for making chaos space marines sympathetic and compelling characters without being ridiculous. and for making the Night lords legion even better than it already is.
Lorgar Aurelian for the way his character falls from arguably the most loyally devoted to the Emperor to the first spark in the emperors betrayal, and for being in charge of the best and one of the most effective post heresy chaos legions, the Word Bearers.
Vect for being the master manipulator and cunning, brutal warlord that exemplifies what it means to be a Dark Eldar
Lady Malys for her cunning and willingness for sacrifice, no matter the cost, just to bring Vect down.
Kharn for being a true example of what it means to be a follower of Khorne
Ollanius Pius (Before know no fear) for having the gigantic, titanium balls to stand before Horus, knowing full well he would die, but doing it anyways.
Trayzn for being hilariously troll-tacular on tabletop and in fluff
Colonel Commissar Ibram Gaunt for being the awesome commander of the First and Only.
I think I could add Bran Redmaw and Vaer Greyloc (The Battle Of The Fang) to my list. Redmaw is awesome at turning into a 12 foot werewolf with a bitchy statline and that's before you even count in the rules.
I've even made a model for Greyloc and a proxy/conversion will suit Bran until the FW release (whenever that will be- 2 years since he was last seen in public...).
MarsNZ wrote: Probably, their characters are all so dull though.
OI! WOTS DIS 'ERE 'BOUT US ORKZ BEIN' DULL! LEAST WEZE NOT SOFT, SQUISHY GITS!
(Oi! What's this here about us orks being dull? Atleast we're not soft, squishy idiots.)
I would have to say my favorite character would have to be Yarrick.
A close second to him though is Bossmek Buzzgob though. Very like his style.
I've gotta say Captain Fabian. First recorded kill of a Hive Tyrant in close combat. Know how he did it? By shooting in the face with a plasma pistol, rescuing a Dreadnought in the process. This about ten minutes after he got promoted to 3rd Company Captain.
My favourite characters list is huge so I'll just put a few down.
Eisenhorn & Ravenor and all the characters from their books
Ibram Gaunt
Mad Larkin
Rawne, Corbec... hell... all the Ghosts.
Honsou - love those Iron Warrior books much more than the Ultramarines.
Garviel Loken
Ragnar Blackmane
Grimaldus indeed - for getting buried in standing against the odds and crawling out purely on his powers of badassery.
Tankred - awesome dreadnoughts are awesome. /discussion.
Kayvaan Shrike - Seriously, this guy could hop over to armageddon and take out Snikrot within weeks if he wanted to, but I think he just enjoys an ork with real talent. Apart from that, a generally awesome guy with a softspot for lost causes.
Al`Rahem - being the Sâlah ad Dînof the 41st millenium (mixed with a huge dose of David Stirling) earns you badass points in my book.
Yarrick - about da on`y `umie da orks respekt propah, cuz dats wot Ghazkull sez we`z ter do!
CREEEEEEEEED!!! - Because a human can outperform Guillimann
Logan Grimnar - grampappy wolf, chops up arrogant members of the Inquisition for being pieces of gak (I understand if some would rather see this retconned).
Arjac Rockfist - whole new meaning to the words "hammer and anvil"
Kharne the Betrayer - "My lord, we won`t make that charge" "WHAT!?! DIE, YOU INCOMPETENT INSIPID DOGS!!! WHAAAGAGHAAHA!!!!" *sounds of a whining chainaxe* "DIE!DIE!DIE"
Tuska da Daemonkilla - Chaos has a place to troll any unfortunate humans by locking them in combat for all eternity. Enter the Orks, who consider it heaven. Chaos has just been trolled.
Mine is probably Commander Kubrik Chenkov.
His hobbies include:
Preventing enemy commanders from escaping by penning them in with tens of thousands of men then leveling the entire area with artillery.
Using entire regiments of soldiers to march across minefields, clearing them for his tanks.
Storming an enemy citadel with no support by throwing endless waves of men at it so he can get home in time for tea and biscuits. (He got a medal for that one, and only lost ten million guardsmen.)
Basically the right plan is the one that guarantees victory with the highest possible losses of guardsmen, preferably for a worthless objective on a desolate, hostile planet.
He is grimkdark personified.
AND he has a cool hat.
Top chap.
