hey everyone! I've been working a lot, so I haven't had any time to make models, much less post! This will change for a short while, as I have a huge chunk O' time coming up for the holidays.
While I enjoy some fine down time, I'll be making an Ork Landa! In case you have been hiding under a Rok, an Ork Landa is a giant orbit-to-surface transport. the Boys arrive to the fight in a pre-made fortress, with all the gubbins that go with it.
I really want to make this build fun, and try to out-do myself. Feel free to follow along, and both cheer on my successes and jeer at my failures!
First up, I need a plan. I have made one, detailing two levels and the roof of the twisted wreckage. Sadly, only I seem to understand what the hell I draw. (at least when it comes to buildin' Ork gubbins and whot-knots. My portraits are very fine, thank-you-very-much.)
Now that I have the plans (along with un-pictured pages of notes,) I set about buildin' the goods.
First, we needs some expanded metal so the ship don't get too heavy. I also make some cuttin' templates for the roof.
Once I got all my drawin' and my thinkin' done, I grab me burna and start cuttin'!
After I got the rough frames cut from the expanded metal, I start sawin' on the gubbins. (I need a lot of metal to jam into the frame. It's a REALLY big frame!)
Once I got a pile O' structure pieces, I take em' to the grinder and smooth them out, so that they take to the welding all proppa-like.
Once I have that done, I do some boring calculations, and figure out how to start the rough assembly.
I have the weekend free, so hopefully I can get a ton of stitches down before work starts again on monday. I should have a good chunk of progress tomorrow night!
As always any and all questions, comments, suggestions, insults, and compliments are welcome!

Thanks for all of y'alls' responses, I will try and not disappoint.
I was able to put in a number of hours at the shop today, progress is good so far!
First up, I got the roughs finished for the floor sections.
Next, I tack braces onto the bottom section. I also wound up using the plasma cutter for a new top section, the one I gas-axed and beat into shape wont work without a level support. I like the shape of the original, I just need a base for it.
after I got that worked out, I tacked on the main support pieces for the first floor.
I then flushed out the base with a few walls. there's not a lot of detail, I just need something to add texture for the many holes in the hull.
Once that was done, I added the second floor, rinse and repeat, and added the (new and improved!) ceiling base.
At this point I needed to clean up the metal before the next round, so more grinding!
To round out the day, I added the wire frame with lots of weldin', cuttin', grindin', and swearing.
Here's the full days work starting with the back, upside down.
followed by a profile shot
Next a cool "floatin' in space" shot. note: this is not the flight stand for it, I just wanted to get a good photo so I posed it on some 2" square tube.
Lastly, a scale shot. you should be able to click on the picture and get the numbers to show in magnify if you cant read them. I posed it with a standard drywall T-square.
I'll be working on it again tomorrow, so updates a' comin' soon!
One last note. Even on regular projects, I kinda stopped explaining how I make stuff and just show pretty pictures. I figure if there's anything that someone wants to know, they'll ask. With this project especially, I understand that it doesn't really fall under any established modeling practice so I'm even lighter then usual on the detail stuff. If you want anything explained, or have any questions in general, feel free to ask! if not, just sit back and enjoy the shiny pictures.

Actually, I'm trying to cut down on the weight as much as possible. as to accidents, they happen, and models get fixed.

It should be between 24" and 28" long, 19" wide, and about a foot tall to the tip of the tail fin. I'm trying to keep the total weight under 20 pounds.
Updates!
Today was a bit frustrating, I got a lot of planning done, but little progress.
To start, I cut out some excess weight from the Landa.
Next, I cut a test piece of metal, and practiced using the metal punch to make rivets. test was good!
After that, I wrote the master list of stuff still to be done. I then went shopping.
I bought a bunch of metal I needed, the hardest to find was small steel tubing. Next I measured out all the hull pieces.
Lastly, I transfered the cut patterns onto sheet metal.
I may have a little time throughout the week, but for the most part I wont have another big update till next weekend. Thanks everyone for looking!

Good day for me, I got a solid twelve hours in at the shop.
First up, I cut the pieces out for the vehicle transport bays and drew lines for rivets.
Next, I use a deadblow hammer and a punch to make rivets.
Lastly, I weld it up and add some skid plates for a proppa crash landing.
Once I had the main transport bay done, I started on the tail fin. First, I welded the base to the hull, insuring the Landa had a stable base.
Next, I welded the frame for the tail fin.
After that, I welded all the plates into the fin.
Next, I added the main engine housing to the fin.
lastly, I added the entire assembly to the Landa.
Here is a side profile shot with all the new goods welded on.
Next up is adding the first plates. First, I have to hammer in all the rivets. There are a LOT of rivets to hammer. (my hands hurt!)
Tomorrow I have to shape each plate, and weld it into place. After that, I'm not sure! maybe engines, the Iron Gob, The top plate, or the turrets. who knows!
Thanks for looking, this has been a hoot to make so far!

As an idea to lighten this up, as that sq metal work at the back is bound to be heavy is to drill it.
It doesn't have to be mega strong, just strong enough to hold together. So drilling it will reduce weight. You can always patch over it with plasticard later.
You may consider it light enough already so no need to worry. Looks immense.

This is insane. I mean, it's AWESOME, but also really insane. I'd be scared crapless, if this enormous hunk of metal would be balanced over my army.
One thing bugs me: Since you're using real metal, how much of this thing do you actually plan on painting? What's the point in building something out of such an appropriate material like here and then paint Boltgun Metal over it...

Dysartes wrote:That's looking very cool - will you be giving it a flight stand of some sort at the end?
no, no flight stand. It crash lands onto the battlefield, then is an immobile fortress.

Again, it will weigh a ton. I'll weigh it, if y'all are that curious. It will not be on a flight stand, it will be stable, it will not fall on miniatures. The way I intend to use it it will damage models and playing tables about as often as anyone drops an armycase full of metal models onto a battlefield.
As to the paintjob query, first let me thank you for asking a question not weight related! (I'm starting to feel like Strongbad answering questions about typing and boxing gloves.)
Anywho, I intend on rusting it to scale using a two step process. First, I'll get a base color by exposing the Landa to muriatic acid. Next, I'll be using a Mek's brew of bleech, salt, water, and hydrogen peroxide. I'll apply it with an eye dropper to give a realistic finish and have the rust "to scale," as it were. Next, I'll kill the rust process using a neutralizer. Lastly, I'll clearcoat, mask, and airbrush on some color.
UPDATE TIME!
I opted not to work on the engines, as it will go much quicker doing that step at the shop. I figured making the jaw ramp would be a lot easier with the metalworking stuff I have at home.
After making a styrofoam mock-up, I measured out the pieces for the jaw and cut them out.
Next, I welded the permanent tooth-plates to the jaw ramp.
After that, I welded the tooth plates that have hinges to the jaw.
Here's the jaw open.
And here's the jaw closed.
Next, I mounted the jaw using more hinges.
Here's the final mount closed.
And open.
Here's a tank disembarking!
Same three pictures, but from the front.
And that's it for now! Sadly, I have to go back to work tomorrow. Hopefully it stays relatively calm, and I can keep working on it throughout the week.

The hinges are very loose, it's held by magnets currently. I'll add some sort of catch before its all done.
UPDATES!
I hopped around a bit, a lot of what I've done had to do with what machines were available at the time I was working on it.
To start, I began working on the upper deck. I started with the nose fin.
Next, I built a tower base for the middle.
Lastly for the top, I added two smaller towers. This configuration should give me all the framework I need for the side turrets and upper deck guns.
Here is a side shot to give a rough idea of the final shape.
I took a break from the top and moved onto the recessed gun decks.
After that, I moved onto the wings.
I wrapped up the week by starting the turrets. for guns, I'm using brake line. Here's me cutting off the guns.
Lastly, I cut the steel for the turret bases. There will be a lot of small guns on this thing, and a few Kannon turrets.
Well, thats it for this update. I should still have plenty of time this week to get more done. Thanks for looking!

UPDATE!
I had another good day. to start with I made my fatty lose some weight! I cut out a lot of unneeded structure. for sure, the next welded model will have have an outer jig.
Here's everything I removed. You gotta love a good torch!
While I had the torch out, I added a bit of battle damage.
lastly, I cut out the engine room.
While I had the engine room cut out, I went ahead and added engines.
To round out the day, I used a soft wheel and cleaned up the whole model.
Alright! Thats two updates in a row. any and all questions/comments/suggestions are appreciated!
(P.S., my weight loss program didn't work. After adding the engines and more skinning, the Landa now weighs twenty pounds.)

Thanks, glad you liked the Chaos Dragon! It's currently in Arizona, I wont be able to get it down here to Louisiana till next year. :(

I got the three smaller engines from an auto parts store, they were exhaust extenders. I can't use Titanium, I'm sticking with MIG welding for this project, TIG will be for the next one. I'll have a lot more metal to work with then! I'm just using Steel and Galvanized on the Landa.
As for the "painting," after I rust it to scale, I will use a salt resist and airbrush to give a peeled and worn paintjob. and don't forget tail fin art!
Sir Samuel Buca wrote:You sir, are a madman and a visionary, I love it. I don't envy you lugging it around though, 20lbs is like 9Kg right? Looks fantastic though, I wish I had the motivation/skill to do something like this.
closer to nine and a half. When the model is done being built, I'll weld two pad-eyes onto it and have a detachable strap for ease of transport.
TheLionOfTheForest wrote:I'm waiting for the day this thing topples over and crushes someone's entire army, game match - orks.
It will only topple over if the table breaks or I drop it while deploying! It is very, very stable, and again will have no flight stand.
About the weight, It only seems heavy due to the scale of models we usually use. Right now, it weighs twenty pounds. To give some sense of how much that is, a gallon of whole milk weighs 8.8 pounds, and a two liter of pepsi weighs about five pounds. so if your gaming table could hold two gallons of milk and a plate of cookies, or four two-liters of soda, it can hold the Landa.
I will try and weigh my Great Gargant by this weekend, but I assure you it's heavier (right now, at least.) I'd guess 25-27 pounds for the Gargant. My Blasta Bomma is easily 10-13 pounds. I used heavy PVC and tons of clay for the details, and it IS mounted on a flight stand! My Chaos dragon was nine pounds, if I recall.
Lastly, It is basically terrain. I have a few ideas for how it lands, and the rough rules are as follows.
1. The Landa becomes available from reserves. I declare what table edge it comes in from, and where it's going to land.
2. all AA fire or rules for Flak guns are resolved against the Landa.
3. The two pulsa-Rokkit pods fire, attempting to clear the "land zone."
4. using the bomb-run rules, I determine where the ship's nose will land.
5. any vehicles/units that the Pulsa-Rokkits didn't move out of the way are in essence "tank-shocked" using the rules from the rulebook.
6. all damage from the ramming are resolved, foot troopers are moved outside the landing area.
7. The Landa is then placed onto the board, using much care and diligence.
8. The Landa is now terrain, it is an immobile vehicle. The jaw can either stay opened or closed, using similar rules to the landing pad. If open, more troops can disembark along with vehicles, but the landa has weaker armor. If closed, only foot troops can disembark, and only a unit per round.
I hope that clears up a few things as far as the size and weight of the model is concerned. Honestly, I'm just making it because I wanted a welded Ork monstrosity.
I really appreciate all of the other comments, I had a good chuckle through a bad work day at a lot of them. again, thanks for looking! I should have an update by the end of the weekend.

Welcome back!
I finally had some time to work on the Landa. I was getting cramped with my set up, so I had to get new carts for my rig. In keeping with Ork fashion, I painted some quick checkers on my new gear.
After I assembled my new welding cart and service cart, I finished the back fin.
I then started the frame for the pilot deck.
Lastly, I bought a hand scale to keep track of weight. The landa is up to 22.5 pounds, or about 10Kg for you metric peeps.
With my new set up, I should be able to work on the Landa more frequently. Thanks for looking!

Yes! The surface is heavily discolored by now, it's rusting quite a bit. I'm using as much raw metal as I can (so it rusts easily) and I live in louisiana. The humidity alone rusts it, not to mention I leave it in my truck and in the backyard a lot.
Nowlan wrote:Nothing says melta-gun damage like holes cut with a plasma-cutter.
I LOVE our new plasma cutter! The old one at the shop was decent, but we got a new one and it is silky-smooth.
Anywho, I have an UPDATE!
I started the plates for the front of the Landa.
After I got the base plates on, I welded lines to it.
Next, I ground it all down to make it pretty. The pictures are hard to make out, the metal gets super shiny when it gets ground.
Lastly, here's a few wide shots.

I have some huge updates coming! I was able to put about fifteen hours into it this week, so this will be the first of three updates.
First up, I added the bottom plates to the wings.
Once it was on, I warped the plates a little and took off some stickers with a propane torch.
once done with that, I started working on engine gubbins and piping it all to the engine room.
Once I was done having fun with engines, I switched gears and started playing dentist. First I added upper teeth.
While I had the jaw open, I added a hook to the jawplate. The magnets were not gonna cut it for the long run, so I fixed it.
Thats it for now, I should have the second part typed up sometime tomorrow.

It will have more. Only about half the turrets are on, and it still needs pulsa-rokkit tubes. On the note of rust, I'm not sure what you mean. most of the rust has been added by me, I only plan on using as little paint as possible.

I can't find links to anything else of note. I usually only post the big and weird stuff, so regular troops and what-nots I don't really have pictures of. I also paired down my collection four years ago, I only have Orks for 40K and Skaven for fantasy. Naturally, I have an embarrassingly large army for each of them, both painted and un-painted.
After that awesome trip down memory lane, I have an update.
First up, I started chemical rust experiments in ernest. The colors are not what the final look will be, I'm just experimenting with what kind of a palette I can expect.
Next, I experimented with the Pulsa-Rokkit rack. It will be very time-intensive, but I really want to have fun with the battery of Rokkits. There will be eight total.
Lastly, I added Dakka. a TON of Dakka. about four pounds of Dakka. There are now over twenty turrets.

I have another update, I'm almost done with the building part.
To start with, I added more details to the wings.
After that I added detail to the jaw.
Next, I built a secondary engine compartment.
After that I added details to the observation deck.
Finally, I Fixed most of the turrets. No pictures, I just had to re-weld them.
I'm still hoping to have it fully built by the end of the month, smile for the camera!

Welding professionally is hard, painful, and very rewarding. Welding as a hobby is pure awesome. I really love the medium, I cannot wait to try TIG welding and miniature oxy-acetelene welding next. Everything on this model has been MIG welding, using .025 wire. Switching to TIG and oxy will allow me to make much smaller welds. I'm also playing around with a plastic welder. I think the future for me will be a mix of both steel and traditional model making tools, like accenting the frame with clay and plastic for ultra-fine detail.
And yes, I believe red may be in order.
Squidbot wrote:I'm beginning to think you actually are an Ork. Or severely tainted at least.
I hope so. It's all I see when I sleep, huge behemoths flying and crunching across destroyed cities. I'll also be looking into making more moving parts, remote controls, and a little pyro on future models for good measure.
caminacambob wrote:Haha this had me giggling like a school girl with the sheer craziness of the idea! Love it.
Pounds of Dakka...... A new standard has been set sir.
I think armies should be valued in weight, not point cost.
lennymaybe wrote:Wow this is impressive. Amazing work. It'll look incredible on a table top.
I hope so, although I'm running out of space to field all my super-heavies at once. Once this is completed, I'll have about 5,000 points in Super-heavies alone, that occupy several square feet of real estate.
I have a small but interesting update. I'm nearing the end game on the building side of things. I had to do die-grinding to take down detail, so I started also doing highlighting. metal gets darker as it rusts, so I started grinding and sanding in highlights. I feel confident I can control the color of the rust, but I don't want to lose all my hard-fought for detail in the aging process.
It's gonna be weird, but imagine all you can add is highlights, and you can only add a layer a day. On top of that, the lowlights will continually get darker and richer, till you stop the rusting process. I do have the advantage of living in Louisiana, so the humidity really allows me to control the aging and rusting process.
Here are the first round pictures of highlights, along with most of the final details etched in.
The tricky part is figuring out where I want the rust, and then neutralizing it. I should be done with all the welding by the end of the week, and thats when I can really start the rusting process. I still need to take off all the zinc off of the plated and galvanized pieces, and I'm not sure how the model as a whole will be affected by the Muriatic acid.
It should be a hoot though, just the fact that I need to treat the model with acid to make it rust is kinda fun.
The scary part is that even fumes from muriatic acid can rust on contact, and I don't know what colors it produces. I would do a test piece, but I need to remove the zinc no matter what so next weekend is gonna be a nail biter for me as I experiment on a completed model.
Thanks again for looking, I cant wait to start painting this beast!

Just to clarify, I'm not an Ork.
UPDATE TIME!
I got me rokkits up and loaded. I wanted to add rokkits, as thats one of the few things on the original model. In addition, I needed a battery of pulsa rokkits to clear a path on the battlefield when it enters play.
First up, I got all the pieces together for the ten pulsa-rokkits based off the original template.
Next, I drilled holes into the rokkit plate for the right side, then used my doming tools to bow out the tube holes.
After that I made the rokkits for the right side and mounted them.
Next up is the left side. I made the rokkits and mounted them.
Lastly for this update, I welded pad eyes to the top frame.
This will allow me to put small shackles through to pad eyes, for a easy to grab handle. (I just used a rubber strap for the picture, I'll make a proppa chain handle later.)
That's it for today, closing in on the end game!

Some observations after checking all posts:
- Until I see a picture of "pox" I refuse to believe he is not an Ork. Notice he said he is not an Ork when he is a Mech Boy.
- May need to bring along an "engine puller" to move this thing around when gaming: some tables may not be designed with this high a weight allowance.
- Impressive welding creation: why simulate welding with plastic when you can do the real thing!
- Please do not make a Gargant. You may have to make it so it doubles as a shop stove when not in use.
I love my fellow hobbiests: no medium is safe from use (especially with Orks!)

PLEASE! We need to make a video of this thing opening and closing its gob yelling "IMA FIRIN MAH LAZZAR!" then shooting all the dakka. Little known fact, the Landa can make it self a smaller target for a brief second by firing all the guns simultaneously in every direction and using their recoil to compress the hull. Fortunately for AA gun crews across the galaxy the orks have never realized this or been able to execute this maneuver if they did, sometimes referred to as a 'Dakka Fart'. This maneuver does however require the replacement of several sguigs and grots who work in the jefferies tubes, once they've been popped back open

Thanks for that! I'd also like to thank everyone that I didn't quote, it really makes projects like these easier and gives me the urge to push on even when I'm tired.
UPDATE TIME!
I finished the engine room by adding tons of proppa gubbins, pipes, do-dads, and bits.
Next, I added the housing to the Pulsa-Rokkits. (and pulled the pins from the track!)
After that I added the side view port. I assume this Landa only makes left turns, as there is no way to see anything out of the right side of the ship. Us orks are an odd bunch when it comes to ship design.
Lastly, I added more gubbins to the jaw.
Here are some side shots for fun.
Not much left on the build, just a few little details.
I don't mean to leave on a sad note, but work is switching to twelve hour shifts so my free time is going to go waaaay down. I didn't make my February deadline to finish the build portion of the project, But I hope to be done with the welding and de-burring by next weekend.
As for the final rusting and painting, I'll have to play the timeline by ear.
Thanks again for all the support and feedback!

Thanks for all the kind words! I'm just hoping to finish this before I really have to start working. (gonna have a few months of 7 day work weeks!)
I do have a huge update, I finished the build! All thats left is the rust and painting.
Anywho, I started by burning off stickers on the pipes.
Next I started adding plates and details to the bottom of the wings. I actually ran out of welding wire! I started with a fresh 2 pound roll for this project. I ground a lot of it off, but still.
After replacing the wire, I added details to the doors. The Landa has three small vehicle and troop doors along the lower cargo hold.
After I added the last details, I did the final grind. This involved using a 40 grit grind wheel, followed by a 120 grit wheel, and lastly getting details ground with various die-grinder bits. Very time consuming, but very boring and no pictures.
Lastly, I dipped the model in a bath of muriatic acid. DO NOT mess with that stuff if you don't have the proper safety equipment!
I have ten good pictures of the finished build, I'll post them in the next update in two minutes!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Alright, here are the finished pictures of the build.
I hope to have the rust done throughout the week, and get it airbrushed next weekend. (Or the next available eight hour chunk of time I can rustle up!)
Again, I thank everyone for looking. I normally try and respond to every post, but work and life just don't afford me the time I like to have to my hobbies.

What's next? I'm currently learning about robots so I have plans for an automated steam Gargant, a Mek-bot that walks and can aim weapons, and a Gargant that has a heads-up display that feeds to a monitor. I also want to get more into machining, so I have plans for a jump-Deff Dread and another Battlewagon.
However, none of this is "Next."
What's next? I'm building an Ork Warbike. I just bought the base "model" to convert, but due to work I probably wont be able to begin construction in ernest until the end of summer. Look for the thread around August though, I guarantee it will be a doozy.

Basically, the Landa has 22 turrets and a battery of ten pulsa rokkits. I wanted to keep it basic so I'll probably just call the turrets twin-linked kannons (eleven per side,) and the Rokkits are for the special rules needed to clear a spot big enough to set the thing down onto the table. I'll figure out rules and post them once it's fully painted and finished. I'm sure I could break it down to twin-linked kannons, twin linked big shootas, single kannons, and what nots but I know from Apocalypse experience that simple is better.
I got a big update!
First up, I got thew rust where I wanted it. I used the acid, salt, diesel fuel, fire, and CLR to get the final look.
One quick note before I show the next picture! I set the model on fire in a contained burn area at work, and its sitting on a sheet of drywall. off camera was another Mek with a Co2 extinguisher and a hudson sprayer. We take fire safety at work very seriously, and so should you. DO NOT SET YOUR MODELS ON FIRE UNLESS YOU ARE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS!
That being said, I soaked the Landa in diesel and lit it on fire.
I then let it sit for a few hours, and pressure washed it to remove all smelly diesel. I then gave it a salt bath, let it sit again for a few hours, rinse and repeat.
Once I had the rust I wanted after a week of adding and removing, all that was left was lightly sanding and polishing.
Here's a close up of the difference.
After I finished sanding out the detail work, I put on a few thick layers of clearcoat. This should stop it from rusting further (a little will always occur) and it will give me a solid base to paint on. I'll be using an airbrush and a salt resist technique, I didn't want the salt further discoloring it.
While it was drying from the clear coat, I made a handle that attaches to the shackles and Pad-eyes.
After attaching the handle, I was able to get an accurate final weight! It's 30 pounds, or just shy of 14 Kg.
Here are some detail shots of the finished rust.
All that's left is painting! I hope to work on it this week, but I have to play it by ear. They just switched me to six days a week, and at twelve hours a day my free time is becoming...limited.
Even if I have no updates by next weekend, I should have a free day sometime before the end of the month. Again, thanks for looking!

Sweet Gorka-Morka, I'm tired of talking about the weight. What the hell do y'all use for a gaming table, paper-mache? foam-core set atop two saw horses made of cardboard? A small mouse? Yes, gaming tables can take the weight. If I went somewhere and wasn't sure it could, do you think I'd risk my model?!?
Agandhjin wrote:Wow... just wow. That is just ridiculously great! The welded metal really works for the orks. Not sure if you've decided to paint it or not, but as it looks now it might just fit with the rest without much painting. But then again, red ones go fasta!

I did re-watch the better Reaver scenes from the series and film for detail ideas, but honestly it's just pure Ork. I've been building Ork Gak for so long I have quite the collection of inspiration. Honestly the greatest contributor to the model was the various Kroozer class ships from Battle Fleet Gothic.
I just have a small update today.
Now that I have the rust where I want it, I started putting salt on for the resist technique I'm using to paint it.
Sadly, I had a lot of problems making the salt stick. Normally I do the resist after painting rust. On this model however, I didn't want the salt to change the rust so I clear coated it first, thus giving too slick a surface to paint on. I found a work around by making a witches brew of Klean Sweep (fine sawdust mixed with light oil,) sand, and both sea and table salt.
Here's the Landa fully covered.
The resist technique wont work if theres ANY moisture on the surface at all, so I need to let it fully dry overnight. I should be able to start airbrushing tomorrow, so another update soon!

I'm not sure, you tell me. here's a quick picture of what's in my current Ork rotation. If I were to field all my super heavies, my boyz would be a bit thin. (only about three hundred or so.)
I would have to go into the attic and break out models I painted ten years ago to really field all my super heavies. sadly, my job rarely affords even 2000 point games, much less Apocalypse. so in the attic they will stay until it's their turn to be repainted!

On a side note, is it magnetic? You could just glue magnets onto the bases of all your orks and pop them in that hangar/mouth thingy, then when you start a game just plonk the landa down, open the hatches and have all the orks in there ready to go. And i'm sure it'll make for some kick-ass pictures as well
