Before reading the excellent Horus Heresy Novel “ Flight of the the Eisenstein” I always disliked the Death Guard. To be honest the whole Chaos gods - and the Lord of Decay in particular - idea of 40K is not appealing at all to me. The Horus Heresy books changed that a lot. I really liked the way Garro acted and even more in the following short stories centred on him.
So when Forge World previewed the Death Shroud Terminators I was hooked. So time for a start - 1st test minis painted.
I will use the minis also when playtesting my Victory Decision SciFi rules, so expect a lot more in the next months.
I was also positively surprised how well the HH Marines Mk III scales up next to a Forge World Imperial Guard. The Marine DOES look big enough!

Upright??? More leaning forward, or?
Anyway - absolutely intentionally, I wanted him bigger looking, straight and proud, "nothing shoves back a Death Guard once moving"...

Funnily enough I really fancy a go at heresy era death guard after reading "Flight of the Eisenstein" too but can't choose between them and DKoK....
I painted some custom bases to look like blasted earth which could suit either army, which is the most enjoyable to paint? I would love to hear your opinion on this as it may tip the balance one way or the other!

Looks great! I am envious of your DKoK, However I also have an observation, I know everyone paints DG as white and green, however in all of the HH books they are quoted as having uncoated ceramite armor (as Dusk Raiders AND Deathguard), they are described as having Ash Grey armor in one of the books, I just can't remember which one off the top of my head.
BTW gotta love VII Company, Straight Arrow Garro!

Me too, that's why the VII is on the armour.
As far as the colors are concerned, I just went with the look I liked. This is Fantasy/ SF after all, no need IMO to be as Rivetcounting as historical players, or?

These are really nice - and I always thought Marines were the right size. As everyone says - it's the plastic Cadians/Catachans that are too big - all the old metal IG models looked the correct size, just like that DKOK.

I think the white IS unpainted ceramite - it's a ceramic/metallic compound, so it's quite possible that the base material is ceramic-coloured. People just seem to assume it's a shiny silver steel-colour...

After a small hiatus again a picture.
Nathaniel Garro wearing a mixture of Mk III and IV armour and his sword libertas.
Some info on the mini: it is of course based on the SM mini from the Master of the Chapter box. Since the PF would be not fitting and Garro often wears Mk IV armour I used a suitable hand and helmet. I then added an Aquila to a MkIV backpack and repositioned the head. The idea is to have him wear a prototype armour.

First, your minis look amazing.
I have a request: Could you provide some pictures and/or a description of how you magnetized the sponsons on that Deimos predator? I'm not sure how to magnetize the sponsons on mine because of how the how the various bits slot into each other and how the lascannon and heavy bolter use different hoses/cables, and it would be helpful to see how you handled that.
Thanks!

The III rd Legion - Emperors Children
As with the Death Guard I totally dislike 40K EC. Way to colourful and queer for my taste (well as long as a tabletop army is concerned).
The way they are presented in the Heresy novel is a different thing, very much to my liking. A warrior brotherhood sworn to achieve martial perfection with a vain leader who constantly is doing the wrong thing out of often good reasons.
So when the opportunity was there to get a decent painted Heresy style EC army, I had to jump at it. So when Peter Zuidgeest of Scars was selling his army we quickly reached an agreement, roughly 2/3 of his force was sold to the US and I took the rest.
As you can see the minis are very nicely done with some cool Source lightning effects. But still I wanted to change something. The freehand numbering is a bit sloppy IMO for a Legion so vain. The bases are IMO a bit too distracting for rank and file trooper.
So I changed the minis to look like the mini below. Only a subtle difference, but more to my liking. And as strange as it sounds - now it is really MY mini. So within the next weeks you will see some more EC from me!
OK, on to Fulgrim, not only one of my favourite Primarchs, the FW mini is just too good to be missed!

And the effect of the “Agisfication” on a Heavy Support Squad. Again bases changed, transfers applied, banner repainted, metal effects added, some retouches here and there.
BTW - I have to say that Peters Light effects are absolutely top notch, he even takes into account that the targeting system of the 2 running Marines are still unlit! Very nice details and clever posing.
And a mini painted all by myself...
Apothecary Crassus in his Mk IV Armour, please note the squad number “728” on the Geneseed tube. Crassus is currently assigned to Tactical Squad 728.
WIP - Tactical Support Squad. Peter sold me a 10 Marine Tactical Squad using the 40K Codex. Consequently he included 1 Meltagun and a Heavy Plasma Cannon. The melta Marine is the nucleus of a Tactical Support Squad.

More or less by accident I painted two minis in their colours using the really good conversion parts of Anvilindustires. Since I was delighted how fast I could paint them I finished 5 Marines. At that time the first FW Iron Hands previews came around - and whuups - I was hooked!

Fantastic iron hands . Really like the red contrast instead of white that most people paint the weapons.

LOve the Iron Hands mate. Can I ask what base colour you used for the armour and what colour you undercoated? The matt black you have there is exactly what I'm after for a planned Raven Guard force.

Matt Black undercoat, dark grey brush on.
Then Boltgun metal and a good wash/ink as described on page 1.

Not in the forseeable future.
The EC will be finished soon, one Assault squad, Palatine Blades, Champion and Phoenix Guard, thats it.
Then back to Death Guard and the occasional Iron Hand.
But who knows...

AAN, you simply must pick up the ForgeWorld Horus Heresy books if you have not already. I'm afraid to say it but you'll be hooked on Iron Hands if you grab the latest one.

Lovely work - very inspirational for my planned Dusk Raiders (the predecessors to your Death Guard!). I've been trawling the net looking for good/quick white armour methods and think yours is the perfect solution, so thanks for sharing the tutorial.
Questions: do you not find that the pigment fixer gives a glossy finish and removes the matt of the pigment itself, or do you just fix that with a final coat of spray on varnish?
And, when shading the larger areas of the tanks does the wash ever dry too quickly and leave a tide mark?!

The MIG pigment fixer never gave me a glossy finish , just worked fine. But yes, once in a while I apply an additional coat of Tamiya Matt varnish.
Dry too quickly? Never - I even speed it up sometimes with a hairdryer. But I am rarely apply the pigments to a large area.

Ah sorry I didn't make that second question clear – I meant when you use your Marabu/Army Painter mixed wash to shade large areas (e.g. the domed turret of the Predator) do you not find it difficult to cover the whole area before it starts to dry?
As for the Mig pigment fixer, I use this with Forge World weathering powders and it always seems to give a 'wet' look even after drying for 48hrs..?!
5617
Post by: AAN
Maybe it is the FW pigments, so far I have mainly used MIG pigments.
As far as the Marabu mix is concerned, it dries VERY slowly, over night in fact - so no rush at all..

Post by: LutherMax
Hmm... Interesting... I'll try with some Mig pigments.
Thank you for the tips!

Some more Horus Heresy Emperors Children.
Again the effect of the “Agisfication” on a Heavy Support Squad. Again bases changed, transfers applied, banner repainted, metal effects added, some retouches here and there. The legs of the kneeling Marines are from Anvil Industries.

Wow. AAN, I'm not sure of the last time I've seen you do anything 40k related, but those Emp's children look tits! Awesome stuff and Awesome OSL, something I don't feel like we see enough of from you.
5617
Post by: AAN
To be honest Moltar, that is because the OSL is not from me.
Peter of scarsminimadness did it, please read the posts above and it all makes sense then.
I am still not a fan of any OSL but have to agree that Peter did a marvelous job.

Yes, it is a leftover of an old RT Spac Wolf project!
Peter had to add a coin to the base, it was constantly tripping because of the heavy PC!

I finally came around to finish my next Primarch - Angron. An good opportunity to give the World Eaters their own section. Also new are some Epic scale Iron Hands.
As with most Chaos Legions I only started to like them while reading the Horus Heresy Novels. The brutes of 40K are not my thing, the savage but noble warriors of 30K who followed their hyper- aggressive Primarch Angron no matter what are more to my liking.
The awesome Forge World model of Angron tempted me even more. For Angron I tried a look of a truly aggressive warrior who did not care at all about his armour or appearance. So old school metal effects, some rust and a slightly dirty look.
The Assault Marine is a FW MkII model with an axe from Anvil Industries, I simply like their axes more.

I recently started an EPIC Armageddon side project. I always loved EPIC A since its release and think that the huge battles of the Heresy just need to be also played in EPIC! I plan to paint an Emperors Children and an Iron Hands army. Below is a Tactical squad (repaint of my Black Templars, therefore the Missile Launcher) with Rhino and a Sicaran tank. The Sicaran is a private sculpt of a fellow enthusiast and not commercially available.

Another collaboration of Peter and me:
The Emperors Children Legion Champion in his Mk IV Armour, Iron Halo and Jump Pack.
I only had to retouch the hairs, some highlights here and there, apply the transfers and paint the base.

Also new are some Robots:
The above minis are from Anvil Industry; ARC Trooper range.
Very nice and clean cast Robots.
I am still not sure if I am going to use them in a Terminator setting or as Adeptus Mechanicus Tech Thralls.

The Thousand Sons are one of my favorite chapters of the Heresy Era.
After buying the new GW game Execution Force I decided pretty fast after seeing the dreadful Chaos Marines in the box that I wanted 3 30k TS Marines as opponents for the Assassins.
So here they are.

Painted Assasins are not so soon ready, 1st Magnus as the Sorcerer, then the Cultist.
And since I already have 3 painted old school Assassins the Assassins might take a while.

I bought one of the model kits right at the release of the Imperial Knight kit in March 2014.
I assembled it pretty fast but then it somehow ended in the “to Paint Queue”.
Now after 15 month I finally got the model finished.
So behold “Ixion” venerable Knight Paladin of House Hermetika.
I used transfers of the original kit and some Forge World sheets, the heraldry on the Ion shield is partly freehand painted (the flames) as is the Hermetika H symbol on the right shoulder.
And finally a group shot with some more Mechanicus minis:

As soon as the HH Prospero Box arrived I just had to paint a SiS. I always like the SiS and their strange background. The great Graham McNeill immortalised them in his novel "A Thousand Sons " - IMO one of the best Horus Heresy books!
The model is really good, not just good, really good. The picture below with my 15 years old SoB models clearly show the way GW (and also my painting) have come. It also shows the famous scale and base size creep...
As far as painting is concerned, I wanted a clean gold look. More or less like described in GWs paint booklet. For the head I wanted a more battle worn look, the Sisters is in service on Prospero so no time to daily shave her head, therefore the darker look. Hope you like it.
