Before reading the excellent Horus Heresy Novel “ Flight of the the Eisenstein” I always disliked the Death Guard. To be honest the whole Chaos gods - and the Lord of Decay in particular - idea of 40K is not appealing at all to me. The Horus Heresy books changed that a lot. I really liked the way Garro acted and even more in the following short stories centred on him.

So when Forge World previewed the Death Shroud Terminators I was hooked. So time for a start - 1st test minis painted.

I will use the minis also when playtesting my Victory Decision SciFi rules, so expect a lot more in the next months.

I was also positively surprised how well the HH Marines Mk III scales up next to a Forge World Imperial Guard. The Marine DOES look big enough!

Pretty nice work! I do however think the marine needs to be upright a bit more, otherwise it looks like he's being shoved backwards.

Upright??? More leaning forward, or?

Anyway - absolutely intentionally, I wanted him bigger looking, straight and proud, "nothing shoves back a Death Guard once moving"...

Funnily enough I really fancy a go at heresy era death guard after reading "Flight of the Eisenstein" too but can't choose between them and DKoK....

I painted some custom bases to look like blasted earth which could suit either army, which is the most enjoyable to paint? I would love to hear your opinion on this as it may tip the balance one way or the other!

Looks great! I am envious of your DKoK, However I also have an observation, I know everyone paints DG as white and green, however in all of the HH books they are quoted as having uncoated ceramite armor (as Dusk Raiders AND Deathguard), they are described as having Ash Grey armor in one of the books, I just can't remember which one off the top of my head.

BTW gotta love VII Company, Straight Arrow Garro!

My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Such a smooth off-white color you've got there. Definitely a top-tier Marine. I will agree, however, that he looks like he's about to topple backwards.

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

Lovely, i think the FW guard stuff (the elysians and krieg) are slighter than their GW contemporaries, whihc makes them more suited to being compared with all marines.
I'd love to see a full army of these death guard though. Fantastic start.
I'd also love to see more of those Kreig

For me Death Guard, you can go all dirty and sloppy while painting them!

Me too, that's why the VII is on the armour.
As far as the colors are concerned, I just went with the look I liked. This is Fantasy/ SF after all, no need IMO to be as Rivetcounting as historical players, or?

Totally agree - FW Guard stuff is better suited to Marines.
Krieg IG is on a back burner for me, but eventually...

I think its a great model with a great pose. Humans lean back from time to time after all. Even soldiers.

I quite like seeing models that aren't all caught in the half a second where they are shooting.

Next one done...

After showing the pics in of the initial posting I received a lot of requests about a small tutorial. Normally I really do not like to write about how I paint my minis, since there is NOTHING special. Just all the techniques that are explained over and over on the net anyway.

But - here we go:

These are really nice - and I always thought Marines were the right size. As everyone says - it's the plastic Cadians/Catachans that are too big - all the old metal IG models looked the correct size, just like that DKOK.

I think the white IS unpainted ceramite - it's a ceramic/metallic compound, so it's quite possible that the base material is ceramic-coloured. People just seem to assume it's a shiny silver steel-colour...

I must say, I absolutely love seeing HH themed armies and the likes, especially with the FW stuff so this is an instant win for me, but my oh my are these some preety models. The olive fits perfectly with that alabaster white you have, absolutely lovely.

Love the paintjob, love the quality, love FW HH miniatures, lovely job. Easily the best Death Guard I've seen.

"It is the great irony of the Legiones Astartes: engineered to kill to achieve a victory of peace that they can then be no part of."

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."
