This is the fifth -=]_=- competition on DakkaDakka and it is open to everyone. The theme of this competition is vehicles. You can enter any sort of vehicle so long as it is scenery/terrain and not a functioning vehicle from your army. For example you could enter a wrecked Land Raider, crashed Doomscythe or decommissioned Manticore, but you can't enter a vehicle that is crewed up and ready for action. In addition you could enter a civilian vehicle - with all these Cities of Death isn't it odd we don't see any wrecked civilian vehicles around? I guess they like to walk everywhere in 40k! How about a burnt out bus? A freight ship that has run aground? An Ork cargo trukk? A Tau Train? You will definitely get bonus points for making a train.

Fantasy entrants are fine too, as are vehicles for other games like Infinity.

Wrecked vehicles work well as scenery but that doesn't mean they have to be wrecks. You could have a landed bommer being refueled for example, or space marine flier converted into the private ride of planetary governor. You can use third party vehicles like the excellent Antenociti's Workshop, Ramshackle Games, Puppetswar etc, or you can scratch build.

More than anything I would like to see original entries. Everyone has seen a Rhino before but has anyone ever seen how an Eldar commutes to work? (I bet they all ride bicycles). Or how do children get to school in the 41st Millenium? Heavily armoured school buses? Here's an excellent article on civilian vehicles in 40k for inspiration: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Civilian_vehicles_in_40k

For a prize I will be offering up these three models. Cynics might say that this is because I no longer need them but that doesn't mean I'm not attached to the little guys. The Pitslave was the very first one I made and began my love of chainsaw hands and all three are extensively converted and unique. There may well be other prizes offered as well. It is possible that I could make a custom miniature for the winner.

The deadline is Sunday the 10th of March. Post finished entries in this thread along with a couple of WIP pics

And those minis you're offering are absoluteley adorable. I hope this thread gets swamped with participants!

I'll be in this one for sure!

Armored school bus... if I'm feeling frisky. But I have to be working on more useable terrain so this will likely be some sort of wreck... could even be Tau... or some ruined industrial equipment for a board I'm planning to make.

Anyhow... step up you guys or I'm going to win this one again!!! And more shrubbery for everyone!

ok... what a lovley idea...! i shouldn´t really be joining this one... i really shouldn´t... i have a big tank to finish... a hero to build...

but for the love of the hobby... i´ll join... too good to refuse... beside...i instantly have a fully viable vehicle i always wanted to do...(no trian this time tho... planned for later ...much later....) count me in bruticus...

i will be making a something inbetween a escapepod/termite...sort of like a cross between a wreck and a functional vehicle then

if this is allowed?

did i say i join well i do!

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- Contest #5 - Winner announced! @ 2013/01/09 23:41:08

Post by: Bruticus

You can make it as big or as small as you like, it doesn't even have to have a base if you prefer. A functional vehicle is fine but make sure it is scenery rather than just a part of your army. I won't disqualify anything but I want to encourage original vehicle designs or ideas, personally I would love to see some civilian or work vehicles, or some interesting wrecks.

I'm soooooooo in on this one... And I mean In-it-to-win-it... I would love to get my greedy little hands on that female survivor of the necropocalypse.

I'll be entering a range rover, a snowmobile, and assorted junk. Nothing that will be even remotely able to drive, so certainly not a parked vehicle.

Nice contest choice Bruticus!!

I don't know if the other competitions have allowed multiple entries, it doesn't bother me though after all the whole point is to encourage people to make cool scenery. A parked vehicle is OK if it is interesting. The competition theme is pretty broad so really you should be able to make whatever you like as long as it involves a vehicle, but it will be judged on originality hence the warnings about parked rhinos!

Not that you would have to make a civilian vehicle or even a 40k vehicle, but it's still a good resource.

Btw I redirected my Leauge competition banner to this thread... feel free to use it guys and get the word out once more

I've been wanting to do an 'industrial wasteland' war-torn forgeworld table for awhile... to go with my dark mechanicus guys.... so this competition might factor in nicely with that. But what vehicle to make? the list of vehicles that bruticus linked was pretty helpful... but I'm still looking around for the right vehicle. I'm thinking it may in fact have to be some kind of train or tanker vehicle, to load up chemical waste/refined products. Wrecked, of course, since the whole place would be a warzone.

Not been tempted to combine your hobbies? Seems like a natural combination to me, I find it hard to look at a beautifully made model railway without imagining titans stamping all around it. I spent a while the other day trying to see if it would be financially feasible to build a 1/300 model railway for an epic40k board. No, is the answer.

His "Work Train" looks more Orky than Imperial, but is so awesome i can let it slide.

Yeah it does a bit. Ork trains would be welcome too by the way. I couldn't find any ork train pictures, although this land train/carriage gun comes pretty close: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2120016_P5Mb1.jpg

I did find an Ork bus though, this is how Ork children get to school I imagine: http://puppetswar.com/img/p/65-185-thickbox.jpg

Of course I have been tempted! then I built an Ordinatus.

Epic/Battletech, being in that 1/285 - 1/300 space would be served by Z Scale. And you'd have to haunt eBay to really make that work. But you wouldn't need a lot.

However, at that scale, building your own 'track' and 'cars' is a lot easier, too. Lay down some plastruct 'rails', and build box shapes. Plastruct tubing solves your boiler and tank cra problems, and then it is down to gribblies and Epic bitz.

Well, I was thinking one way or another everything would be wrecked and not used for awhile, as if there had been years of grinding warfare and environmental disaster, also I'd want it not to be too urban so you get to see the effect on the landscape more... so I'm thinking now a tracked vehicle or something with huge wheels, and a large chemical tank, would work better. No point in making a working train I'm afraid. I'll just have to do extra hard work to get my bonus points...

Yeah I might consider it one day but that stuff is expensive and it would be a bit nuts to have a tiny functioning railway going all over your battlefield. Nuts but obviously also awesome.

Some sort of work machine? There are already some great examples of giant excavators and mining vehicles around today, I bet in 40k they would have some rather impressive vehicles. I also really like the forgeworld Death Korps mining vehicle, and the page I linked earlier has a few amazing examples of vehicles intended for an Ash Waste Prospector gang - a walking work platform, a runabout etc.

Just an initial layout, may well change as I few ideas that I could use. The truck itself has been a project on hold since the late 90s, was going to be a piece of necromunda scenery, may still become that... The barrels and jerry cans have been in my collection for as many years as well serving as general scenery for Necromunda and various WW2 games...

Yeah, I was looking at the ash waste prospector gang. I was planning on getting the pegasus chemical plant for terrain bits, which has a lot of oil-refinery looking stuff, but the setting would not be urban, rather in a nightmarish environmental disaster/war zone. So I probably want something I can attach some chemical tanks to.

Good work Ruglud, the only good Space Marine is a crashed, burning Space Marine. I think that bit of scenery could use a wreckage trail behind it where it has skidded along and through the ground before coming to a halt. Without one it looks like it has just fallen out of the sky straight down (like the plane from Hot Shots).

add the banner to your sig... just saying

Ah I have sigs turned off so didn't notice this, although I suppose other people can still see mine.

I have that pegasus kit, it's good although it comes in millions of parts so takes quite some patience to use. Dsteingass used some on his factory building but used plastruct pipes as well for the longer stretches and I think that is definitely the way to go, looks great. I notice that Ironhands used it on his train as well.

Good news, and I'll keep that in mind about the pipes. I don't mind it coming in a lot of parts... especially when i can order more of a certain type from the bits website.

Sorry but that's all in German which makes it tricky to figure out, but it looks like the train is 5cm wide and 7-8cm tall, which I would say is probably a bit small for 40k.

(I should probably add that I won't really penalise people for not making trains, I just think a train would be cool but there are plenty of other great ideas out there).

From the way I understand it, O gauge is pretty close to 32mm figure scale, S gauge is the equivalent of 28mm figures... (OO & HO scale are either side of 20mm)

This is a useful link for scale equivalents that I have bookmarked

Almost as cool as trains - civilian aircraft. I love the Arvus lander from Forgeworld but there must be a lot of other aircraft/spacecraft out there, from super heavy cargo lifters to crop dusters, I am sure there are plenty of options in both wrecked and unwrecked states.

How about 40k farmyard vehicles? I am sure they have some pretty crazy crop rotations going on when a single hive has the population of a planet. Wasn't there some sort of giant combine harvester in Eisenhorn?

Not to mention all the xeno vehicles, what's the Eldar equivalent of a cargo lorry? Or a milk float? Don't tell me the Eldar don't have milk floats, probably just buy their soy milk online.

Or military vehicles are good too, I've seen some amazing wrecks made from Leman Russ kits, there is so much extra detail you can add when you are peeling away layers of hull.

Or you can build some scenery around an existing vehicle. Yes a Rhino is boring but one crashed through the front window of a [40k Newsagent equivalent] could be great. Or a Rhino that has been stripped down for parts and then converted into a ramshackle hut.

I'd like to encourage people to post WIPs but I know it feels like giving the game away, I didn't want to post any of my last competition entry. Maybe when we reach the halfway point everyone could post what they have so far?

Well, I've got to build the tension somehow *geez*

But yes that, when I get my thing there may be more teasers.

yeah I didn't mean you should post a picture of a 14" long bit base or anything, just that it would be good to get lots of WIP images from everyone a bit later on. I didn't want to post my WIPs as I felt it gave too much away and I guess a lot of people will feel the same.

Yeah honestly I don't have a problem posting WIP's, especially as others post theirs and the deadline gets closer. But there's got to be some mystery I think, it makes everything more fun.

Yeah I should think so. You could always make a vehicle from The Hobbit though if you wanted, like Gandalf's cart or erm... some sort of special short bus for dwarfs.

(I've not seen the Hobbit, I guess it probably doesn't have many vehicles in it).

That old dead dread is quite amazing, the worn/aged paint is a really good effect - I like how it hasn't been painted in a bright rust, I pretty sure that space marine armour wouldn't rust anyway as it is a ceramic compound isn't it?

Good to see more entrants, if the prize is not to your taste I can always build a custom model that might be more suitable.

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- Contest #5 - Winner announced! @ 2013/01/25 20:44:15

Post by: Meade

I believe the ceramite is supposed to be on the outside, and there's adamantium and plasteel on the inside. All the good stuff.. in real life I don't see why it would rust, but they are imaginary materials so why not... the 'rule of cool'.

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- Contest #5 - Winner announced! @ 2013/01/25 23:11:23

Post by: Bruticus

Well I think the way this dread is painted looks great - more like the paint is going mouldy. I do love some bright orange rust but it always looks a bit odd on space marines

LOL- Ponies and Giant Eagles are the only vehicles in The Hobbit first movie..but in the book, Bilbo rides a barrel raft with the Dwarves inside, but he is wearing the ring and is invisible..so it would just be a model of a barrel raft

I think that would be stretching the definition of vehicle. And the definition of terrain. 'Oh that pony counts as hard cover, and that giant eagle is impassible'. A model of a barrel raft would work - it would be more like scenery if it didn't have any visible dwarfs or hobbits on it!

It looks good, I really like the rust colours. I think the wires coming out of the cockpit bit look really like rebar from concrete which I guess they are not meant to be but it is a cool effect anyway.

I think it could use a few small details around the place to give it a bit more character, things like eroded markings/letters or splashes of colour. Maybe some grass or burnt areas, that sort of thing.

Here's a more revealing WIP

It's an ash waste crawler. Just imagine would would happen if a tank mated with a train and a cathedral, that's the look I'm going for... and I'd like to make it derelict as well. Of course I've still got quite a ways to go, have to install a lot of rivets and tubes, ladders and platforms, and some buttress-like structures, as well as huge chemical tanks on the back (got some dual Pegasus chemical plant kits in the mail the other day).

I have to admit though I'm not a true american hero... most of my memories of the toys as a child are associated with strong feelings of inadequacy... I actually remember being wildly jealous of another kid who had that F-14!

It's alright though, I was mostly a Lego guy as a kid. My parents wouldn't let me have Nintendo

Andy - the graffiti is excellent in my opinion, it doesn't look like a contemporary style which is ideal, it could easily be some futuristic style of tagging. If anything I would say you should do more.

Meade - love the Ash Waste crawler. Did you ever play the Ash Waste supplement for Necro? There are rules for the crawler in that. Maybe you should give your vehicle double duty as a bit of scenery on your chaos board and the home of an ash waste gang.

Ruglud - looking good, lots of potential for some nice rusty paint. I would suggest adding plenty of texture to the base board, things like potholes, scrapes, drifts of sand around the barrels etc.

There's still plenty of time to enter this competition by the way everyone.

I'm Necro deprived, due to being a newcomer to mini-gaming in general and the players in my area are very 40k-centered. Been making progress on the crawler, should have pics up soon but It's going to be extremely decayed and half buried, much like the images of rusting shipwreck hulks. It still might turn out to be somebody's home though.

Working with the GI Joe vehicle has been cool though, I think for a gaming related vehicle I would make Mega Chaos Renegade tank for Apoc out of a Hiss tank or something bigger.

That thing is awesome, really liking the chipped and corroded metal around the tracks. That'll be a lot of fun to weather.

Maybe add a couple of maintenance ladders on the sides in case people want to clamber over it in games? And a few places on the top where a sniper could camp out? Not sure if that tends to happen much in 40k but you should do it anyway for when you persuade your friends to play Ash Wastes on your perfectly suited board.

yeah I'm trying to make it so that models can at least be placed on top, or hang out inside, Kind of a part ruins part building. And I had some of those ladder bits but I'm still rummaging around to find them. I wanted to put corroded metal fencing on it but the thing is you have to do that after the initial priming and painting... so, last step.

So I'll preface this by saying that I probably won't get this done before the deadline (since you're all way out of my league), but I wanted to share what I was up to and get feedback. I started on a crashed Imperial cargo hauler and may come back to it, but now I'm onto this:

Ruglud - I've realised that your photos don't do the amount of work you've put in justice, let's get some close ups when you are done. The painting is first rate and the details like a scratch built toolbox with scratch built tools are just crazy and easy to overlook.

Dsteingass - So the whole thing is scratch built? The front looks like a kit of some sort. I have no idea how you made such neat curves and lines (it's actually much neater than the computer game version, I would have been tempted to cut corners and just said it was very wrecked!). It looks slightly unfinished without a base but I think it will be easier to use for gaming without one. Love the broken glass again.

Mars2024 - Well that came out of nowhere, I love it. Part of the aim of this competition was to get some out of the box thinking and that is certainly like nothing I would have thought up. I guess it could maybe use some drifts of sand or dirt around the base to help show that it is buried and a it's going to be a difficult thing to paint - that colour scheme looks great but will you weather it? I guess wraithbone doesn't really corrode does it? Maybe some burnt patches or something. Good luck with it anyway, I'm sure you can finish in time.

That's a tough act to follow Ruglud! Attention to detail, modelling and paintjob, all perfectly executed! I love the leaves, toolbox, and the bulletholes in the side of the truck.

@Ruglud: Beautiful painting. It's a great scene.

So I have no delusions about being competitive in this contest, but I at least wanted to post my piece. I was really only using the competition to add to the terrain I have for games so "tabletop quality" was all I really wanted to do (besides, I don't think my skills are beyond that anyway). I also have been trying to keep my table themed to match my army - which is why I decided to go with the wrecked Titan. I also didn't think I could get my crashed cargo hauler idea painted far enough along by the deadline.

Anyway, here is the "Wrecked Eldar Titan"

and a quick photoshoped version:

Thanks for keeping this going everyone. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. You guys inspire me!

Ruglud - that's really great, I knew it needed some close up photos.

Mars2024 - I really like how it looks like sun bleached bones in the desert, I think you've got the weathering spot on. The only thing that bothers me slightly is how the head is resting on flat ground as if placed there, but the spines are buried deep as if they had been there for years and covered in sand. I think some deep sand drifts around various points would really help if it was possible to add them. Love the photoshop work.

MauS - great job, I like that you just melted the wheels on your stove, nice (if somewhat toxic) solution! It could use a few details to put it in scale, such as signs, trash in the back, etc. Looking good so far, would like to see it in situ.

Dsteingass - That's looking great, the billboard in particular looks fantastic, really good work getting the print out to mesh seamlessly with the frame. I was making a billboard for Necromunda but yours is so much better I may have to try harder! I guess the only thing I am unsure about is the cobblestones which somehow look a bit clean to me, perhaps a bit of tonal variety? Pigments or dirt?

Minus - fantastic level of painting, like all your stuff. And the scratchbuild is good. I would have really loved to see a BFG vehicle scenery piece, maybe a drifting hulk or wreck? That'd be great.

Everyone - the deadline is the 10th but if you need a few more days that is OK. The whole point is to get people to build cool things and limiting the amount of entries would be counter productive. But only a few more days, so the next competition can get under way.

Wow! some truly amazing entries!

In other news i added slime.
Used Watery base paints washes and gloss varnish to counteract the '2 tone' feel of my terrain.

Managed to pick up 3 more robogear models for a pound on eBay so will probably do the same to them (see pic).

Great thread btw

Hello,

Minus send me here, and I will participate with pleasure!

Here is my Ammo Truck to play as a ammo dump in the 40k V6 rules.

Its little story:
This old truck at the color of my friend Minus's 5th company transports a lot of ammo. It has been seeing better days, long ago, very long ago, and surely in another arm of the galaxy. It has been forgotten somewhere near a battlefield and it's really a shame to let so much ammo unattented. The techpriest thinks that it can still work, but recommanded not to rush it.

Based on a gorkamorka truk and the all other bitz are from Rhino, Chimera, Leman Russ, Land Raider...
I don't have a picture, but you can open the roof and the back door to see the ammo!

Thanks Bruticus, but it's not supposed to be cobblestones, but rather 200 year old asphalt streets

I'm would be happy with a few more days to the contest, if there's anyone who thinks they might not finish up in time. Don't think anyone is in a rush for the next one, I've got another painting contest I'll want to participate in after this is over. But I think mine should be done in time.

@ Arkall: That's a cool looking truck, all it's missing is a hunched-looking chapter serf offering up some bolter ammo like it's holy

@Andy: Definitely an improvement! anything that gives it more variation in color, texture is good. I'd save some of that Robogear though, they are great bits for building other stuff besides terrain.

Some cool looking models appearing in these pages now.. That ammo truck is a great use of bitz.

The downed Eldar is excellent, I remember one of mates started doing something similar back in the early 90's (don't think he ever finished it though)

Scratchbuilt Rhino, FTW...

Rodogear model is cool, love the cables coming out the broken leg joint.

Dave's Corvega plus billboard - the billboard alone is awesome and then consider that the car is scratchbuilt - A.M.A.Z.I.N.G

Sorry if missed any others along the way, but keep 'em coming folks, there's a real strong skill base in Dakka, puts WD to shame...

I think they still make some good scenery in WD, but they certainly do depend too much on plastic kits nowadays. Even that cool asteroid base thing is only quite impressive as opposed to amazing, due to the fact that to some extent it looks like anyone with enough money could have made something similar. I'd like to see them do more scratchbuilding but I guess they want to sell kits.

So the deadline is nearly upon us, does anyone need an extension?

I agree there is a bit of a decline in quality in some areas (the painting for all the hobbit miniatures has been terrible) but I think the scenery articles they do are still decent, they just depend too much on kits. I really liked the asteroid base for example but it would have been much better with some scratchbuilt areas. Oh and I love the goblin town stuff.

Yea golbin town was nice. But the only good secenery in WD is often £150 worth of kits?!!?!!? (when you could spend that on a set of secenery for your gaming table). Tbh then new look WD is very nice and prefer it. Deffently work the extra £1 but not worth £5.50 (witch is a pound more than the other monthly mags).

TBH, WD has been one big advertisment for a long time now, it's more a trade catalouge than a hobby magazine. The days of it being a magazine with actual articles relating to the hobby are long gone - I recall issues with templates where they actually encouraged you to build your own scenery and vehicles from scratch - such as the infamous Baneblade templates... I also stopped buying Wargames Illustrated when Battlefront boought it out as the majority of the magazine bacame their advert for FoW.

Dakka is an awesome resource for articles, tutorials, pictures, etc. Why spend £5.50 per month on a trade magazine when I can get all this info online? Plus you get to meet some great people - the community here is great, especially in the P&M section...

I could use a day or two. I'm going to try to take a few pics tomorrow when I work on it though, so you guys see where I'm at. Painting extreme weathering is FUN.

I think they would sell more kits from white dwarf if they showed terrain that was made highlighting a kit or two, but the greater share of it was made from everyday materials. The same goes for them showing masterpiece-quality terrain, I think most people might be a little turned of like "I could never do that". As it is, it's "I could never pay for that". If they inspire people to make terrain and the make good kits, people will simply buy more kits, and I actually think the terrain kits' GW makes are awesome.

that's kind of what I was going for, emphasizing the 'land-ship' aspect. I really didn't have the bits around to make it more cathedral-y, maybe next time on some other mega tank.

It's still going to be a long haul to get the whole board finished... I wanted to do a half-buried chemical plant and then the river of rust. still on the table.

No no take it back! The comps not over yet... all entries have their merits...

Thanks for the compliment though... I try hard to keep up to -=L=- standards

@Bruticus: Yeah, it's built into a 2x4 section of board. The final board will have 3 sections, a river (of rust, basically) running through the middle section, and a junked up half buried chemical plant. It's all built into thick pieces of pink foam. It just allows for a better looking board, I think. I might also cut it in half and make 2 2x2's that I can switch around.

Well here's the vehickle contest done... Some of the graffiti used (like skalk's name,) ties it all in to my shanty-town and necropocalypse city, hence the 74th street tag, some crap bout the emperor etc... The entire thing is deliberately only based on a cd, and kept clean, because it needs to tie in with my scenery. I didn't want to do any basing at all at first, but then the judge might consider it a still moveable vehicle despite the four flat tires... Anyways, enjoy... And I wonder if anyone gets the 3:16 reference

Many thanx to Skalk for allowing me to use his name for graffiti without him knowing it. Somewhere this week i'll show the other league members where their names ended up. Told ya i'd steal that idea Dave!!

Erm... Bruticus... When are you going to declare me winner?

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- Contest #5 - Winner announced! @ 2013/03/13 22:31:52

Post by: Bruticus

Well after a lot of debate it really came down to being between two entries for me. There were some fantastic other entries - I really liked the buried Phantom Titan and I think with a bit more detail and thought into how it came to be there - a bit of story and realism to it - that would have been my favourite, fantastic idea.

I also really love the Corvega diorama - I can appreciate the care and effort that went into replicating something accurately rather than making it up as you go along. I think the billboard is one of the best bits of scenery I have ever seen as well and if this was a billboard competition it would have walked away with it.

Maus I think you deserve a small prize for using a technique I find both hilarious and appealing, melting the wheels on the truck, regardless of (I assume) toxic fumes seems a very suitably haphazard way to make scrap scenery. I'll send you the model you wanted - I think she'd have a good home with your menagerie.

At the risk of banging on for too long, it came down to between Ruglud and Meade. Ruglud's truck I thought was a sure fire winner when I first saw it, I love how detailed it is and how it is completely the opposite of anything I would make - refined and delicate. But then Meade's ash waste crawler is exactly the sort of thing I would wish I had made or could make (or could steal). I love the weathering that has been hacked out of the plastic with clippers. I love all the pigment and all the crap piled around it. It tells a story, it's ambitious and it's imaginative, I've never seen anything else like it. Even putting aside my bias towards the ash waste theme I think it is still the best entry. One of the best bits of scenery I have ever seen to be honest.

So Meade is the winner, Ruglud a close second. Well done!

I'll hand back over to you Meade for the next competition and unless you particularly want any of the painted models I made previously I can make a custom one for you.

Thanks everyone! Bruticus put it very well... the other entries really put me on my toes! That's why I love competitions it just adds a tad more incentive to make something cool you might otherwise not make... and brings people together as a community... I'm kind of sorry I'm going to be hosting the next comp. Bruticus, I was definitely inspired by looking at your Necro terrain when making that thing.

As for the rustiness and degradation... I'll write down a short version... for anyone else looking at the thread.

1. clipping/mangling the plastic and literally melting it with a gluegun tip to make the holes... and I probably inhaled some fumes at this point.

2. basecoat of tin bitz/black brown and burnt umber, varying from place to place

3. pigments, applied liberally everywhere, three different shades, from vallejo burnt umber to iron oxide (reddish) and then also secret weapon mini's rust orange

4. masking fluid applied with a sponge, then painted white over (stippled so it's sort of random). when dry I removed masking to make the chips, with a crappy bristle brush, added benefit that the pigment underneath colored the white paint on top.

5. sepia wash, and using darker colors over lighter to show where holes in the rusty metal washed down over the lighter colors and stained it.

6. drybrushing, in a bone white mixed with color of the pigment.

7. sponging, with a dark blackish brown, on the edges, to make chips that are darker. the last two steps break up the monotone of the pigment and bring out details which is very important for working the pigments! and done.

It'll be a few days before I make the next comp, due to me being away tomorrow and still have to decide what comp to make.

Doesn't the masking fluid take off the pigments under it? Or did you seal the pigments? I find sealing them dramatically reduces their vividness.

It's not sealed, no point wasting sealant on that thing, what am I afraid of chipping the paint , yes you're right I've found the same thing.

Keep in mind when I put the pigment on everywhere it's dissolved in water and forms a layer on the model. The masking fluid takes some of the pigment off, but if there's a healthy layer of pigment it will just adhere to the surface and a layer will come off with the dried fluid, also it interacts with the remaining paint quite nicely. If you think about it, what you want is for there to be a bit of dark visible (basecoat), with a ring of rust and spots of rust of a lighter color around it.

The pigment that I brushed on wet over the white paint, came out the brightest and most orangey. I think it's just something to do with the way the light hits the molecules or something. I haven't tried, but it might just look very similar if sealed. I suspect real rust behaves the same way, you often only see it be really orange when it's dissolved in water or freshly deposited...

Tep! The brighter the orange, the fresher the rust

hmm I see, I would have thought the mask would take it all off cleanly for some reason. I haven't tried Future but I've even used the special Mig pigment fixer and it still reduces the pigment too much for my tastes, particularly the bright orange ones. I doubt there is any way to seal it without reducing the brightness. Nowadays I mostly seal and then put a new dusting on top again.

What, second place for my little wrecked truck? Wow, thanks Bruticus... I didn't think i'd come in second, not after I saw Dave's scratchbuilt Corvega and Meades awesome ash waste crawler (or should that be land Titanic...)

Congrats to all who completed an entry and especially Meade and his amazingly realistic rusting hulk - are you sure you didn't just find a real one and take photos

I've really enjoyed this competition and it inspired me to actually finish a model - that's now 2 completed pieces in 2013, which is some sort of record... Roll on Meades competition

thanks again guys! But no actually, it is a real vehicle. And I live inside. Too late though I already won !

I'm going to try to think up more ideas for a competition, but by all means please give suggestions if you have a good idea. The most important things I'm keeping in mind are bringing more people into it, by keeping it generic enough that everyone can participate and work it into their own projects, and keeping it terrain. Maybe make a poll?

@dave: Does the floor wax come out glossy? Most of the time I think I'm more concerned about finish than actual protection... love a matte finish...

Yes, slightly, but that's good! Don't be afraid of it. You can have 10 gloss coats, only one matte coat at the end will matter.

Well, I probably shouldn't post this in case I ever win a =]_= contest, but I do have some ideas...

  • CD terrain - use those old and useless freebie CDs to make a piece of terrain - either the terrain is made from one or more CDs or the CD is the base and dictates the size of the terrain piece (height is unlimited)

  • Yoghurt /pudding pot - use those old plastic yoghurt pots to make a piece of terrain

  • 99p /99c store - find an item in a thrift shop that cost less than £1 / $1 / €1 etc and make it into a piece of terrain

  • Ruins - make a piece of terrain that ties in with the theme of an army / gang but is ruined

  • We're not worthy - make a place of worship for your table - could be a sacrificial altar, a monolithic standing stone (or ring of stones), a tree spirit (ala Pocahontas) or a gothic cathedral to the Emperor

  • 3D art - find a piece of artwork depicting terrain/scenery and recreate it with your own twist - could also be a recreation of terrain from a movie or a video game

  • Line of Sight - create a piece of terrain that can be used to block Line of Sight - either for a single figure or an entire regiment

  • In the garden - Even Space Marines have a hobby... create a garden or an element to fit in a garden, could be a vegetable patch, a well, a scarecrow or lots of pots full of grimdark plants

  • In the bunker - make a bunker for the army / gang of your choice

  • Cork it - make a pice of terrain from cork (could be a sheet of cork, a wine bottle cork or any other cork you can fine (or a mixture of them all...)

  • The Plasticard challenge - take a standard A4 (or US equivalent - Letter?) piece of plasticard and let your imagination run riot - only limit is you can only use the one sheet and nothing else (apart from paint and glue)

  • Sprues everywhere - Finally, all those old used sprues you've been hoarding will get to be used... Make something great - whether a pile of rubble, a ladder, a barricade, or a house... The sprues do not need to be identifiable as such, but must be the basis of the terrain...

Hmm, that might be useful if I want to get back into painting with oils on minis.

@Ruglud.... thanks for the suggestions, actually two of those I was already contemplating, the 'We're not worthy' (I like the name), I was thinking of having some contest for shrines and statuary in general, and also the bunker/fortification one. Ruins contest would be good too, but awfully close to wrecked vehicles. And 'In the garden' would be too much like the previous shrubbery contest I think...

I'm thinking bunkers and fortifications... might have more of a popular appeal and is always fun but 'We're not worthy' might be a bit more challenging and unique... also potentially hilarious!

I have mixed feelings about the contests based on a single material... thing about that is, you have an and result where the entries are so diverse that it's wildly difficult to judge. Also while it's good to challenge people to use different media, hobbyists can often be very attached to certain kinds of materials. Plasticard... sprues... cds....the dollar store... for me at least these things are like bread and butter already... and I'm one of those believers that it's the end result that really counts, whether you make it out of trash or fancy expensive materials it's what you do with it that matters.

I used to think it was only useful for oil weathering too, but really, there is MORE! Soo much more!
    1. It's the only way to erase film from decals without using stinky MicroSol and MicroSet.
    2. A coat of future will make any future inks/washes pool around rivets and panel lines with 0% effort from you.
    3. It creates a smooth surface for layered weathering without damaging/turning to mud previous layers
    4. It's about 1000% cheaper by volume than any brand of clear you can buy and available at your local supermarket
    5. Out of the bottle, it's very subtle, but you CAN thin it even further if you wish with water, alcohol, thinner, whatever you prefer.
    6. Chemically, it's just clear acrylic.

Stop... you had me at, "only way to erase film from decals".

that's an annoyance for me. Will definitely pick up a bottle...

So far there seems to be some agreement for "We're not worthy"?

Reason why I'm not a fan of anything that limits materials or is based on one material or technique... w/e it may be, just reminds me too much of an annoying art school assignment where it would be, make a sculpture using only cardboard, empty coffee cups or some other random but clever material. Just my personal opinion though But there could be bonus points for being creative materials... or being creative in general... in the judging. Kind of like a secondary mission. In a way there already is because just buying a kit, is kind of boring unless all the coolness is in the painting or weathering techniques.

I actually considered that as well... but it's probably good to keep in mind for the future, when the contests get more consistent high number of entrants you can do weirder stuff. In any case the board I'm working on is part junkyard... I like to keep all the waste products from my scratchbuilding and re-use it in scrap heaps, put quite a bit around the crawler.
