We just posted all of the basics on the Golden Throne Grand Tournament 2013. This year the Golden Throne has become the first Grand Tournament to fully integrate single and team play into the main event!
This 2000pt, dual force organization tournament allows players to register as a part of a team (up to four players per team). The entire event is played individually, and at the end of the weekend the last man standing wins the title of 40k Champion -- and the team with the most accumulated wins earns the title of Team Champions!
Please note that registering as a part of a team is not a requirement.
All of the details on the event can be found on our website. Please post questions here!
We've just posted the first wave of info on our Friday events! The list of options includes:
- 40k Narrative Event
-Kill Team Draft Events
-Conversion Contests
- HQ Arena Deathmatches
Each Friday event you enter gets you a raffle ticket. Each Friday event you win gets you another raffle ticket. At 7pm on Friday we'll draw tickets, and one lucky winner goes home with a Dreamforge Leviathan Crusader!

Is it the GW or non-GW one? Confused as the rules seem to be GW-like and not like they are at most major tournaments.

Don't they still do their very own tournament aka Throne of Skulls?
I mean, it's not a real competitive tournament, but still...thought they still did it.

This event sees players compete using armies built with the following rules:
•2000pts selected from a Games Workshop codex.
•Dual force organization allowed.
•Allies allowed.
•Fortifications allowed.
•Warhammer 40k stamped Forgeworld allowed.
Round Deployment Scenario
1 Vanguard Strike
Crusade (3 objectives)
2 Hammer and Anvil
Purge the Alien
3 Dawn of War
Big Guns Never Tire (5 objectives)
4 Vanguard Strike
The Scouring
5 Hammer and Anvil
Crusade (3 objectives)
6 Dawn of War
Big Guns Never Tire (5 objectives)
All of this is like a breath of fresh air. Amazing in its simplicity.

If you're asking whether the tournament is run by GW, the answer is no. This is an independent Grand Tournament.

Based on the (rather interesting) "pod" format, I take it that the max entries will be 128? (Just trying to decide how critical it is to register early for this one.)

Interesting format. The "team" structure reminds me of Adepticon, year 1, where the Team Tournament was exactly as you have it structured here: a combined-results setup, rather than cooperative play. Nice way to guarantee that you avoid your teammates on day 1, though - just pick the 3 people you REALLY don't want to face in the early rounds, and get seeded into different pods.
Two concerns:
Will terrain be significantly improved over the previous Golden Throne event? There were extenuating circumstances last year, I know, but it was the one area that needed improvement.
How are the Alameda fairgrounds? I suspect this was a cost consideration (fairgrounds are cheaper than convention hall space), but with my ears still ringing & my ankles still sore from the BAO, it seems more important today than usual.

Yes. If you take a look at our website you'll see an area labeled 'Terrain Photos;' we'll be posting photos of finished terrain there soon. We have a lot more this year, and everything will be of a much higher quality.

The Alameda fairgrounds are actually pretty nice. The hall we've rented is about the same size as the hall we had in San Jose last year, which gave everybody plenty of personal space.

Thanks for the response. I will keep an eye on your terrain as it goes up, as I always appreciate the process (and the effort!) that goes into making good and durable terrain. My offer from last year still stands, too - if you need help, put out a call, and you'll get some!
Hey, one other question - pods of 16 will yield 2 undefeated players from each pod in 3 rounds, to seed your "top 8" finals. Maximum of 64 players, then?

This format supports a maximum of 128 players (with the top finisher from each of 8 pods advancing to Top 8). Final rankings are W/L/D with battle points and strength of schedule as tie-breakers (in that order).

That's the part I can't wrap my head around. 3 rounds across 16 players gives you 2 undefeated players in each 16-person pod. How do you pick the top player from each pod, then? Hard to get "strength of schedule" out a 3-round pool; just battle points?

So players are setting up objectives after they choose deployment zones per the rulebook?
And since most of the missions you're using have an odd number of objectives, so that means the player who wins the roll-off to place an objective first gets to have one more objective on his side that can be just over 6" from his board edge?
And on the scouring you're playing completely by the book too? So one person can end up with the '4' point objective and two '3' point objectives all 7" from their own board edge?
I'm just wondering how you see that as being 'tournament ready' missions? Basically the most important factor is who wins the 50/50 chance to get the extra objective on their side.
And 2,000 point dual-force org games in 3 hour rounds? From my personal perspective, you literally could not pay me to attend an event with this format. But I do think it is always a great thing to have a variety of different events to cater to different types of players, so I do hope it all goes fantastic for you!

3 hours should be fine, actually. 2k Dual-org chart games tend to have FEWER models than a 1999 list, rather than more - the slots people want to double up on are expensive HQs/Elites, not more Troops. The points on odd numbers of objectives are fair enough, though.

While you are right (about people doubling up on all the good stuff), there will also undoubtedly people who try to max out on horde aspects, etc. So sure in some games 3 hours will be way more than needed, but for other games it will be rough. Its one of the reasons I strongly dislike dual-force org games...it really heightens the whole feast or famine element of certain army builds near to absurdity.
But really, the final sentiments in my last post (about 3 hours, and dual-force org) were comments about my preferences more than logistics. I fully know that a tournament will run overall fine at 3 hour rounds for 2K points...its just the furthest thing away from what I would be interested in as possible, that's all I was really trying to say.

With tie-breakers. Battle points are our primary tie-breaker, which (in my opinion) adds some depth to our WLD format. Strength of schedule is our secondary, and that's always a factor -- our tournament software determines your strength of schedule based on the record of your opponents and, if necessary, your opponents' opponents. A true tie is almost impossible under this format.

Highly variable. Adepticon sold out in hours; the Nova typically sells out months ahead of time; the BAO sold out a couple weeks early.
Best advice? Buy when you're sure you can make it.

Also, the uneven objectives make using tie breakers even harder, right? If I get one objective to place, my opponent gets two and I manage to win anyway, it will likely be a close victory, making my tie breakers go down. So not only is the person who loses that die roll disadvantaged to win, even if they DO win they are disadvantaged for that victory to actually matter.

Incorrect. It's not posted on the website yet, but we're using the same order of operations we did last year -- roll to determine who places objectives, do so, then roll to determine deployment zones. You will never know which board edge you'll have until after objectives are set.

Ok, I appreciate that clarification, but my bigger worry is that half of the undefeated players will be eliminated midway through the event. To get a winner with 128 people you need 7 rounds. I don't think using tie breaks to kill 8 3-0 players is the best way to determine a winner. I understand that a seventh round might be too time consuming, but I believe there is a better way to make this work.

No one's being eliminated midway through the event. There are three rounds day one, and following those the top player from each pod will advance to Top 8 while everyone else will advance to Day Two. There are prizes for both. The top finisher in each pod is the player who's won the most games and simultaneously accumulated the most battle points. It's a relatively straightforward system and allows us to put on an event that's casual and relaxed with a bigger focus on fun than squeezing in another turn under a strict time limit. It also allows us to split teammates into different pods in order to avoid them playing each other on day one. If we were able to run a three-day tournament we'd probably do seven rounds prior to the top cut in order to determine the true event champion, but that's not realistic for us or for the players.

You could do what the BAO did and have a single "final" game after all the rest are finished for the top bracket. This would allow you to cut to the top sixteen, taking two from each pod.
The issue right now, I think, is that even though there are prizes for winning both halves of the tournament, the "final eight" is clearly more prestigious and is where the overall champion will come from. This matters to some people more than prizes.
Cutting to sixteen and having a final would allow you to alleviate the concerns of those who feel that three games is not sufficient to identify the best player from each pod.

This was exactly my thinking. Thank you.
The other option would be to run a 4th round on Saturday so that each pod will have exactly one undefeated player, but I imagine that a 4th round with only one match going on on Sunday would be superior.

Allies of Convenience are always scoring (provided that they're scoring units). Allies of Desperation are not. Automatically Appended Next Post: We've updated the event rules to reflect a Top Cut rather than a Top 8. All undefeated players will advance to Top Cut Playoffs, though depending on attendance this will mean a different schedule and an additional round of Sunday play for those players who advance. I missed meeting you at the BAO, Janthkin; then again, maybe I did I just didn't get your dakka handle.
My point here though, is that I wore my nerdy, work shoes, the ones I paid $140 (Clark's 'Structured'); which almost look like rain-forrest, tree frog pads on my scrawny frame. I variously stood and sat, but these kept me from having sore feet/ankles. Seriously, they made a difference.
I strongly recommend such great footwear for prolonged events, such as RTs and GTs. I know you're a grown up, and you know how to take care of your feet, but sometimes a little info can be helpful.
BTW: You prolly didn't miss me; besides children, I was prolly the scrawniest (not shortest) guy there. I could squeeze through the aisles and two 'regular' sized players, without contact!

The bus leaves BART every hour and gets to the Fairgrounds in about 15 minutes on Saturdays. There are usually cabs at the BART station as well, or you can call 925-777-7777, which is very easy for drunk people to remember, which I'm sure is why the cab company uses it.

I guess I won't be attending. There is no reason for this sort of rule. It entirely removes the possibility of scratch-building, to say nothing of using superior models that might have been released by other companies.
While that's not entirely accurate -- there's a strong argument to be made for requiring models from the GW range for the sake of quick recognition on the tabletop, and GW is one of our primary sponsors -- we will be removing that restriction in this week's update. It's no longer a requirement for us to qualify for support.

I'll make sure that information is included in this week's update. I can't be 100% certain just yet, but I believe our wording is something to the effect of: "Players must be prepared to present their opponents with copies of the most recent rules for their army."

I take issue with this.
1) FW rules are not readily available, so how do I know your using the most current version of the unit's rules unless I can see the actual book?
2) Lots of people find the rules online, in lieu of actually buying the book. This is stealing, and I have no desire to play with thieves.
Rob, I'm sure my opinion is just one guys voice, but I'd strongly vote for that if you want to use FW units, you need to have the OFFICIAL rules that go along with it. Just like you need your armies codex, and you need the main rulebook, you need the actual FW book as well.

50% GW parts rule has been eliminated.
Order of operations has been posted - place objectives, then roll for sides.
Championship round scenario has been posted.
The first few FAQ submissions have been addressed and posted.

Hey Rob,
If you're looking for potential rules issues to put in your FAQ, check out the Adepticon FAQ...not implying you should use the actual rulings in there, just that its a good resource to pull from rather than relying just on submissions from those attendees aware enough to submit questions to you.

No, the day two RTT is a whole separate tournament -- no matter how you did on day one you can still take first place on day two.
Ticket sales for the main event are at about 300% of where they were last year at this time. Who else is getting excited already?!

You don't need a physical ticket. Once your payment is processed we send you a confirmation email and add your name to our list of confirmed participants. All you need to do at that point is check in the day of the event.

Actually the book says in the Bigger Games section on pg 110 that you are allowed to take "an additional primary detachment..., an additional allied detachment and an additional fortification." also under the fortification rules on page 114 it says, " You can take a single fortification for each primary detachment in your force." These rules are in the rulebook, I was more asking if the tournament itself allowed two fortifications or was the tournament going to limit it to 1.

That's correct: if you use a second primary detachment, you may include a second fortification. That means two HQ choices and four Troop choices at a minimum.

I emailed several questions and even tried posting on the web page but received no reply, are there people who are checking emails/posts?
The questions I asked were:
1.) Is there a parking charge for the Alameda County Fairgrounds for those that will be driving?
2.) Will people staying at other hotels be able to have any shuttle service or will they be able to use the shuttle service at Larkspur landing and leave their cars at the hotel?
3.) How will you guys handle Forgeworld units that may be updated in the Apocalypse rules next month, will you just allow the new rules to be used without any "cooldown" period or require the old rules for units/models to be used?
4.) How will you handle certain unit/model upgrades that are not necessarily included in a unit's box? Will players need to somehow come up with adequate conversions or will they be able to use an option that is in the box but say it is something else as long as they clearly let opponent's know and it is clearly marked on the army list? An example would be how one would model a Spinneret Rifle on a Warp Spider Exarch since no such bit exists for a Spinneret Rifle in the first place.
Thanks!

If using forgeworld, does the forgeworld unit get updated point costs along with the new codex? For instance, if I wanted to run Hornets from Eldar forgeworld, would a bright lance still cost 30 pts or would it be like in the new book, and cost either 15 or 20 points. Or how about wasp assault walkers? will they have different point costs for their weapons than their counterparts war walkers?

Obviously, Rob will probably know better, but there is a charge to park at the Fairgrounds during the Fair, Scottish Games, Good Guys Car Show, and anything else I've been to there. Obviously, these are all much larger events than a 120 person get together, so the rules may be different, but I am expecting to be charged if I want to use the official parking lot. If you know the area, it's not hard to find neighborhood parking within a 5 minute walk of the Fairgrounds, and it is in Pleasanton, so it's a safe enough area to leave your car parked for a day.
I am curious, though, if there will be any on-site concessions? I don't mind going to the kebab house across the street, but I'm not sure if time will really accommodate that.

Yes, I check all of those places regularly -- I've just spent the past week driving across the country, though. Sorry for the delay!
1) Maybe, probably. The charge is $7 per car, but we've asked to have that waived. I'll know for sure by the end of June and update then.
2) Which hotel are you thinking of? I can check and get back to you.
3) Our cutoff date for new material is July 6 - if something comes out after that it won't be allowed at the GTGT.
4) For obvious reasons our rules require WYSIWYG models; however, if you have a specific model question you can always email or post a picture. If you're using an upgrade and that model/wargear literally doesn't exist from GW, a clear stand-in and adequate notice given to your opponents is all we'd ask for.

If a Forgeworld model has a weapon that's been updated in a new codex, you should play the model with the new weapon profile. The points cost does not change, though.

Hey Rob, thank's for getting back to us and hope you had a safe trip!
I am going to be staying at the Hyatt Place Dublin/Pleasanton so I was wondering if I could just drive/walk over to Larkspur Landing to take advantage of the shuttle service or if you might be able to cover other nearby hotels.
Also, you said that If a Forgeworld model has a weapon that's been updated in a new codex, you should play the model with the new weapon profile. The points cost does not change, though.
How does that work with the Eldar Warp Hunter? Does that mean the template version is S4 AP2 Distort and the large blast is S10 AP2 Distort?

Updates for today:
The Prizes page has been added to the site. We're giving away some awesome stuff! We've also updated our Event Information page to display our paint rubric.
Details on possible shuttle service will be posted tomorrow. Right now I'm not sure if we'll be able to get it running during the weekend. Also tomorrow is the release of our new, comprehensive FAQ, which should answer all of the rules questions that have been submitted thus far and clear up a lot of little concerns you might come across during several games of 40k.

I don't have anything confirmed yet, but it looks like we'll be offering a 30-minute window in the morning and evening on those days where the shuttle will be travelling back and forth from the hotel to the fairgrounds.
I've begun updating our Event FAQ (I'll continue doing that throughout tonight and tomorrow). If you have questions you'd like to see answered there, please post them here and I'll get to them ASAP.

I know the FAQ says that weapon profiles for forge world will be replaced by weapon profiles in the codex so I wanted to make sure that the following interpretation is correct:
Warp Hunter says it is armed with a Distortion Cannon and has rules for a D-Cannon in a box below the main entry.
Does that mean it follows the rules for the D-Cannon in the codex as per the Vaul's Wrath Support Weapons thereby going from a Large Blast to a Small Blast and going to S10 or does it maintain it's large blast shot?
Also, it has the Aether Storm rule that refers to it's D-Cannon rules, so does that mean it can fire the D-Cannon profile from the Eldar Codex as a Template thereby having a S10 Ap2 Template?
Just would like some clarification on how you guys will rule this weapon profile to be, thanks!

Forgeworld has proven in the past that it is capable of updating its rules without our help; as such, updates to weapon profiles in GW codices do not affect Forgeworld units with the same weapons -- continue using the weapon profiles listed with the official Forgeworld rules. I apologize for any inconvenience in planning your army, but we think this is the most straightforward and reasonable manner for dealing with this issue.

Yep! We ordered over 100 new pieces from Amera, who's also a new sponsor this year, and added over 100 square feet of area terrain already. Our ultimate goal is 500 square feet of terrain, based on these calculations:
64 tables x 6ft x 4ft = 1536 sq ft of tabletop x 30% coverage = 460.8 square feet of terrain
We're also building some awesome new custom stuff for the Friday narrative event. We're using Amera trenches and some special terrain for the surface of Cadia, and up in the sky we're building an entire board to represent the interior of Lord Admiral Quarren's ship.

The supplement specifically says you use Iyanden or Eldar Codex rules where applicable and not both...So no mixing or matching =(.
However, if all you want is the Primaris from the Iyanden codex, you can still take everything from the Eldar codex...Only the applicable Iyanden rules replace the applicable Eldar Codex rules.

The top three kits are the ruins that go to our top three finishers in the GTGT main event; the rest are objectives for our Top 8 Keep Your Objectives! promotion - top 8 players holding an objective at the end of their match get to take them home!

When you say that the first roll for anything mysterious applies to all of them, does that mean the first roll for a mysterious objective applies to all the objectives? also, how big of a base size are the objectives?

Can my sergeants model a power weapon as a close combat weapon since i built my sergeant that way. To distinguish my sergeants from my regular dudes and because it looks better with a power weapon.

That's correct. We want to include the mysterious tables, but going the whole nine yards doesn't really work in a tournament setting. Giving both players the same benefit/handicap does.
Objective size is up to you, just don't get too crazy! I'm not sure what you mean. Did you model your sergeants with power swords but not pay for the upgrade?

Yes thats correct. Will that be ok as long as my army list shows close combat weapon and i inform that the guy with the sword is. Only to distinguish my sergeant.

No - the cutoff for new rules was July 6. Nothing released after that (including the new Apocalypse stuff) is allowed.

As long as you let your opponents know you'll be fine.

Hey Rob, thanks for answering all of these questions, first of all.
How are you ruling powers that don't target enemy units but affect them for the Golden Throne? The BRB. states that you have to be the target of a power to get a deny the witch save, however some of the older book powers target the psyker, but have a radius effect such as Null Zone, Aura of Despair, etc. that effect enemy units.
The BRB defines NOVAs but those are specifically a sub-type of witch-fires that damage the target whereas these powers are not.
Are you ruling that units effected by the power get a deny the witch or no sense they are not the target of the power? Also, how are you ruling Jaws of the World Wolf? Does each unit hit by it get a Deny the Witch or just the first unit and if so, does that nullify the entire power?
Thanks.

Post by: jy2
By RAW, I don't believe you will get a Deny save against area-of-effect powers which doesn't specifically target a unit.
As for Jaws, I believe it is the first unit that is touched by the line which gets its Deny save. Any other unit behind them is not actually being targeted and so get no Deny saves.

Hey guys,
This year we have players coming from several states and as far away as Ireland. I can't properly express how excited I am! Tomorrow I'm going to pick up about 30 more boards, so you can expect updates over the next few days with photos of the tables you'll be playing on (and, most likely, my cut-up fingers!). If you haven't bought your ticket yet, please pick it up now so I know how many boards we need to add!

Some players use a Sharpie to write the objective values from the Scouring on the bottom of their objectives (especially if they're using the GW servo skull objective markers). That way seems to be the most convenient. Automatically Appended Next Post:
We have several still available.

This is for anyone really to answer, but can you have the Iyanden supplement as your primary detachment, and Codex: Eldar as a allied detachment? or vice versa? Also, for swooping hawks, If the unit cannot see the same target of their grenade pack, can they still make a shooting attack against a different target? The wording makes in sound as if the unit can't see them anymore or they are out of rang, they can shoot at a different target.
713
Post by: mortetvie
You can only take Iyanden or Codex Eldar as primary as they cannot be allied with each other. Furthermore, your primary must be from the same codex so you can either have 2 Iyanden or 2 Codex: Eldar detachments.

A few questions: (Hopefully none have been asked previously)
Will there be tables set up on Friday for pick-up games?
Do you have to buy entry to Friday events ahead of time or can you just drop a 20 on the table and get in on a draft tourney?
Are y'all using the old GW Kill Team rules or do you have your own set?

We'll be setting the boards up on Friday, yes. I'm not sure what time they'll be available, but I'd guess early to mid afternoon.
You can plunk down your cash and hop into any of our Friday events. Please note that we're not accepting credit or debit on site, though.
We have our own relatively straightforward set of Kill Team rules we'll pass out to participants.

Just a brief update. Some of the people who made it to Day 2 with 3-0 records (that I am aware of):
Reece (Space Marines/Space Wolves)
Frankie (very nasty Eldar/Dark Eldar list with 6 ravagers!)
Mortavie (Eldar + Tau)
Ministry (Tau + Eldar)
Liz (BAO 2013 winner, daemons)
Mike (Eldar + allies?)
Not sure who else.
Not surprisingly, there was a huge number of Tau/Eldar players. Probably 1/3 of the field contained them in one form or another. As I predicted, riptides are the new heldrakes. For marines, there were a staggering number of drop pod armies. Reece ran 3 drop pods in his army, including the dreadnought drop pod where he can assault on the turn he lands. There was also a good number of Hyperios Launchers on the marine side.
Suprisingly, only 4 necron armies that I saw, including a very nasty triple-heldrake, 4-necron flyer list (he might have gone 3-0 as well). Would've been 5 had I been able to play.

Do you know anything about the rest of this list? I'm guessing it was dual FOC CSM as the primary with two allied Necron detachments? That's a lot of mandatory stuff (4 HQ, 6 Troops).

Post by: jy2
I believe it was CSM primary with necron allies - Overlord, deathmarks in scythe, 2 troops in scythes and a doomscythe.
So just 1 FOC.

Very fun event! Thanks to Rob and Co. for running it.
I made it to the finals with such a goofball list, no double force org , a single forge world unit, had the last game won and forgot to get out of my transport on turn 5. He has 8 models left, 6 of which are jetbikes and flies into objectives, the game ends, I lose. Doh! I can't believe I forgot to get out of my damn land raider. Such a rookie mistake, but such is life and I had a lot of fun second is nothing to be ashamed of and I fought through some really good players and lists to get there. Always cool when the game comes down to the last throw of the dice. Had it gone to 6, I would have probably won, maybe even tabling him, but it didn't.
Fun event and dou le force org, fw allowed was no big deal. Almost all the finalists had.normal armies. It's the player, not the list that matters.

Had a great time with my buddy at your tourney, Rob. Everyone graciously beat me like a rented mule. Highly competitive lists and players who were exceedingly pleasant opponents. The organization seemed great and I heard several compliments from more experienced tourney goers than me.
Highly recommended.
My list:
180 Boyz Green tide w/ Nobz and goodies.
Skyshield
KFF
15 Lootas
Dakka Jet
Game 1 vs Eldar Harlequins. Loss, but even match.
Game 2 vs Slaanesh Flying Circuis. Win but should've been a draw and had I played faster would've been a loss.
Game 3 vs Eldar jetbikes and Harlequins. Loss.
Game 4 vs Tau w/Eldar Allies. This was a crushing defeat. My opponent killed all but abou 20 Orks. I killed none of his models. ZERO.
Game 5 vs Dark Angel Bikes w/ terminator Death Star. This was the friendliest match, but still, alas, a loss.
Game 6 vs Space Wolves. Drop. The TO went out of his way to pair my buddy and i then my friend had to take a call from the boss (wife). We opted for a roll-off to determine the result. He rolled a 1, I a 5! Victory!
All in all it was a great experience. I was a little disappointed not to see more varied lists. There were 5-10 Tau centered lists +/- Eldar Allies. Really you couldn't throw an ork without hitting one of them. Although some were complete (and AMAZINGLYpainted), more than a few were incompletly painted. No biggie, but it tells me something.
But the final round was more telling of great generalship and list building. I think the real story may be of second place. I won't steal his thunder, but I will say the traditional colors of this would be a canine colored yellow. I'd call it the Ol'Yeller list. I mean fist...

Well you failed then! You did impress me because winning any GT is a very impressive feat.
It is just doing it with a crappy army is even more impressive.
And I know you are a long time Thousand Son player and Eldar player. Heck, you were doing really well with Eldar before the new codex. Every codex has its time to shine and right now Eldar and Tau are the top dogs,

Indeed, I was thinking of bringing Thousand Sons even! However, I hate having to rely on Hell Drakes and Demons to carry the poor little guys...
Just to toot my own horn a little, I did take Thousand Sons to the LVGT in 2005 and was the ONLY person to go 5-0 but didn't place because I am failtastic at painting lol..Oh how I wish GW understood how to make Tzeench/Thousand Sons work =(.
Anyway...Bringing a crappy army to a GT is like bringing a Geo Metro to an indy 500...Sure as heck it is impressive if you win but don't count on it. with two relatively equally matched players competing, usually the one with a better army/dice wins.

HEY NOW, that's what happens when a college football theme is up against a pro football themed army, right? It was a great game to record though, my blue boys were screaming "HOLD THE LINEEEEEE"
All jokes aside I completely agree with doktor_g in that most of the players were incredibly friendly and rob and his crew were on point in answering rules queries, getting to people in a timely fashion, etc.
I was skeptical on the whole pod format thing, but i guess it worked out not having to face people like the top tier zero comp on day two, right?
I was, yes, one of those Tau/eldar players, and i was really surprised by the lists i saw, too bad i couldn't go up against all of them! I found it funny that i played pairs of codexes in order of tau/ork/eldar, here's a rundown of my experiences
round 1: tau list which was MSU all the way, really took me by surprise but i scrapped in a win
round 2: my ONLY loss, to the only full tau player to make it to the elimination rounds, great game and hard fought but alas, it was a loss for me...
round 3: up against an ork player with nobs in a battlewagon with the Thrakka himself and mad doc, he brought a mekka deff dread, and damn that was hard to kill. Thrakka died to overwatch win!
Day two, essentially a 3 round singles tourney
round 4: fought doktor_g and only lost 4 wounds on one riptide, crushing defeat on his end but i really enjoyed the match and probably would have even if the roles were reversed!
round 5: went up against a pair of nightwings, the aspect fighters, illic and a few other characters and harlies with eldar, i was dancing in my deployment zone to avoid the shredding i would have gotten if i got close, though by turn 5 only illic lived...
round 6: this match got me more nervous than any other, facing one of the guys from "the dice abide" and staring down 5 waveserpents and 5 warp hunters I had to really take advantage of that 2" coherency rule, and deepstrike all my suits. he got me nervous but i somehow was able to wreck all his tanks and come out with a win
overall my team in the second day singles got third (Vince), second (myself) and first (the ever-famous Israel)
it was a great tournament, keep up the good work Rob!

This is the usual with new codexes. If Marines, Orks, and Tyranids get a halfway decent book we will start to see more variety in tourneys. There's a ton of people sitting on Grey Knight, Imperial Guard, and Space Wolf armies and their new codexes will eventually arrive too.

@d6. I faced only FW tetras. But saw the Mek's Dred and some hyperios. That's it for FW. I'll be back for you Alex! Next time I'm gonna kill at least one model!

Just to echo what others have said; this was an excellent and well-run event. I really enjoyed the "pod" system as it allowed me to avoid facing people I play against regularly, and allowed my record to reset after going 1-2 on Day 1. Going into the event I was concerned about the time limit and 2,000 points, but five of my six games finished early and the TO's left us plenty of time for lunch and a break. Certainly did not feel rushed.
Overall I faced six great opponents, and really enjoyed myself. I'd be more than willing to make the drive up from SoCal again next year.
My friend took some pictures of the event which can be found here: http://www.thediceabide.com/2013/08/photos-from-the-golden-throne-gt/
I also suspect we'll do some sort of write-up on The Dice Abide sometime this week.

round 6: this match got me more nervous than any other, facing one of the guys from "the dice abide" and staring down 5 waveserpents and 5 warp hunters I had to really take advantage of that 2" coherency rule, and deepstrike all my suits. he got me nervous but i somehow was able to wreck all his tanks and come out with a win!
I think we discovered that Tau are rather adept at wrecking AV12! Great game overall, look forward to playing you again.
Out of curiosity, how much Forgeworld stuff did you see being played?
I did bring quite a bit of FW with 5 Warp Hunters and 2 Nightwings. As for my opponents I only faced two with FW in their lists (Tetras and Hyperios).

GTGT 2013 final standings have been posted! We'll be adding a more in-depth analysis of the event, including a metagame breakdown and Forge World/dual force org analysis, as soon as we can. As a favor to me, please provide a link to our website if you're writing a blog post about the results!
If you enjoyed playing in the GTGT, please take a look at the upcoming GTGT Southwest we'll be hosting in Waco, Texas at the WaCon Game Convention this September 28-29!

Great event this year Rob! It was a 100% improvement over last year in San Jose and was my favorite tournament this year. I applaud you for going 2k with FW allowed, made for the most diverse group of WH40k armies I've ever seen at a tournament.
On a more personal note, I was happy to place 8th with my Tau/Eldar list and am still in therapy after having to face the nightmarish Frankie Deldar list for the final game. I was stupified when I heard that Reece's Space Marines handled the space elves.
Thanks for the great tournament and look forward to going to the next one next year!

Yeah that's very, very true! But i'll be 100% honest I didn't think that would actually happen at all! I also thought you would gun for my etheral

I posted a quick breakdown of the GTGT metagame, including armies played (Primary/Allied) and a peek at how many players brought Forge World or double force organization in their lists.

Thanks again to Rob and his team for such a fun event! I really had a great time. The event was well run, quick and fair rules judgments, fun opponents and a cool, unique format. I liked the double force org, FW, craziness! It was a really fun change of pace.
I wanted to say sorry to my first opponent Israel as I was being a bit of a baby in the first round because I got second turn against Tau and was complaining that there wasn't any terrain in my deployment zone. We understand all too well as TOs that it is really difficult to make enough terrain to keep all the boards covered adequately and I am sure Rob will continue to add terrain as time goes by. Anyway, I ended up winning that game because Israel forgot to take an objective last turn, and then then I did the exact same thing in the last game, haha, so I think that was a bit of karma.
The tournament was very fun and I look forward to next year as the format provides a really nice mix up from the norm.
It was a blast playing a "bad" list that had lots of tricks and such. Very fun! Lysander is still a chiefton too, what a bad ass.
Congratz to Adam for hanging in there and finding a path to victory despite getting drubbed all game. A lot of players would have given up after turn 2 when most of his good stuff was already dead, but he hung in there and captialized on my mistake! Well played.
And yes, Paul Murphy is my Everest! Haha, I will defeat him next time!!!!
