Adrian Smith - Impossible Stairs - Nurgle vs Tzeentch from The Lost and The Dammed
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Realm of Chaos Slaves to Darkness book. The two Realm of Chaos books are phenomenally detailed tombs that have shaped my view of Chaos and the Warhammer World. In 1992 I picked up the Lost and The Dammed from the discontinued pile in my local GW and bought it for about £5. Since then I have spent many hours poring over the fine and disturbing artworks and short story text boxes. Looking at the Path to Glory and wishing I had some like minded people to play a campaign with. In 2001 I got Slaves to Darkness off ebay (I don't wish to think about how much it cost me) and while it is full of wonderful and morbidly erotic art my soul was already vouched to Grandfather Onogal.
The Tears of Isstvan
So roll on 12 years and Fulgrim of Tears of Istvaan posted a link to a Superb Tony Ackland interview and then suggested to our little gaming group that we mark the 25th Anniversary by rolling up Warbands and sacrificing each other to dark gods. So in February, after we visited the Arrke Wald we stepped though one of its warp gates into The Warhammer World, the six of us JB, Rise, Tears of Envy, Fulgrim, Neil and I rolled up our collective Warbands. In July we will be getting together and playing a few games of Path To Glory. To make things a little more interesting we each rolled three times on the followers table and three times on the gifts table for our Champions.

Aye up PDH great start
Here are my wips of the tzeentch warband led by Clovis Eichelberger the sorcerer with his twin brother Lothar the Warrior Champion, and three tzaangors in the foreground.
I rolled..
one Champion with acid excretions ( sweats acid ) and acid for blood and a magic frost sword He also has one spell to choose from the mighty tzeentch.. wondrous gifts !
Five Chaos dwarfs with crossbows
Four beast men ( one with a ravens head ) which I swapped up for Tzaangors with bows and spears, so i could have fun modelling them
three skaven with spears ( one with a tentacle arm mutation ) and one with one eye.

These should look amazing. noticed neither of you seem to be using much of the Gor kit though.
32193
Post by: PDH
Llamahead - Well they are a bit generic for those blessed by Onogal and the Great Shaper. Mine are Gor heads/the skull head is from a banner pole. Bodies of Plague Bearers and arms of Ungors.
Neil I really cannot wait to see your beastman up close.....the heads are just sooooo right for Tzeengors.
34119
Post by: neil101
@ Llamahead , Yep far too pedestrian for Tzaangors , I am trying to cpature the spirit of the faun or satyr with my Gors.. who have been blessed by the changer of ways.. I have never actually seen a tzaangor modelled i dont think although some of the early broo luck like what i am trying to capture
Tzaangors & Pestigors from the Realm of Chaos slaves to darkness
Number 12 on from these Realm of Chaos beatmen could be one though..
Broo beasties one of these second row down looks like the bird legged one ., perfect for tzeengors.
PDH Pestigors are so right for you buddy , what is the last head on the right ?
I will pop up some more pics when i get chance probably tomorrow.

Post by: PDH
That head is the gor champion - it normally has four horns.

Ahh..
Edit PIC removed for editing
I think i this pic sums up both war bands quite well... the text on the rock is rather excellent.

Heh Beastman player here Tzaangor and Pestigor were both in the Beasts of Chaos book as well although those models do capture the look far better than the generic plastics although the metal Pestigor did come rather close.

This seems like an incredibly awesome idea. Having never experienced the Realms of Chaos books, other than in passing references by other poster's, I'll be following this with glee.
Seems like a particularly cool set of books.
Both those warbands look excellent. I love that skull headed Pestigor. The eyeless Tzaangor at the front left is particularly creepy.
32193
Post by: PDH
Llamahead - The metal pestigors were dammed good. But I prefer working in plastic/resin and besides I couldn't possibly use a stock model.
Medium of Death - They are particularly cool book. Yeah old skull is coming along very nicely, he is called Phlegmgave
32193
Post by: PDH
Maledictor Emmerich Ruprecht, Sorcerer of Nurgleth
The base model is Ashrâk, the Spiderkin. His head is a trophy from the Ungors kit. The intestines, tubes are what his Trail of Slime leaks from. The little hand near his head belongs to his familiar. This miniatures is super tiny and comes to waist height on my Pestigors. The part I am most proud of is the staff - the birds heads nailed to the icon to make the Nurglii symbol. Onogal likes Tzeentchian spies sacrificed in his name!

The raven skull detail on the Nurgle banner is pretty neat. I really want to see him stood next to one of those 'gors to see how small he is.
Can I also be incredibly thick and ask what rules you'll be using? I know the warbands are created using the Realms of Chaos books, but are the rules for the warband type skirmish game in there too?

Seconded - what're the rules for this? It all looks fantastic - I'm a bigger fan of Tzeentch than Nurgle, but both gangs are shaping up nicely. Got a taste for beastmen after Project Metal Beast, while feathered-horned sorcerers and changelings have always been ace in my book.

P.S. - that initial post photo of the eagle-man vs the diseased warrior is friggin' epic! I remember seeing that a LONG time ago...

PDH you can even make Nurgle look attractive! Great work the both of you
32193
Post by: PDH
Medium of Death/ HF Izanagi - I will take a shot when the gors are finished. The top of his staff comes up to the top of the their heads. We will be using WFB 3rd edition rules which are basically skirmish rules. We might also throw in some Mordheim.
HF Izanagi - Boo! Tricksy Bird stealing my free will. Neil's stuff is great but then his stuff always is. If you like Tzeentchy stuff check out Erik Gustavsson's Tzeentch Warband on this blog http://codfishparings.blogspot.co.uk/
Rogue Wolves - I think you have caught a fever and are raving....no one can make Nurgle look attractive.

This is a great idea for a project and the models are all looking very interesting so far.
PDH - I couldn't figure out the tiny familiar hand on Ruprecht without reading though, it looks like his hand - I see he is listed as having a familiar that is/does 'magic storage' - what does that involve? Did you pass over the opportunity to make a tiny Nurgle Luggage (from Discworld)?
I love that the beast of Nurgle has a shotgun but doesn't know how to use it.
I also love that your leader has cowardice as his primary gift, that's great. How does the character system work exactly? You roll up on the tables to see what you get and then play a few games with them? Do they level up further? The thing that puts me off most games is the lack of character progression - that's why I am into Necromunda so much, I like seeing my little guys grow up.
Any plans to use that cool new moon face herald from the whatever-the-hell chariot of Tzeentch kit?
Neil - I think you've got the toughest thing to build there - the five Chaos Dwarfs. I would just not know if I should use the awesome forgeworld ones or how on earth you make Tzeentchian dwarfs in the first place. Interesting though. I was wondering if the LoTR Grim Hammers kit might have some suitable bits.

@ PDH I love this guy , his head will make a mighty fine trophy for my champion ;-) although he needs more eyes.. lots more eyes..
@ llamahead , i think i must have missed the beasts of chaos book .
@ Medium of death quote " The eyeless Tzaangor at the front left is particularly creepy "
He is the leader tasked with keeping the newly turned tzaangors in place.
@ Rogue cheers
@ Remi , yep tzeentch all the way , i will teach papa nurgle the error of his ways
These were my initial turnskin and caprigor mocks ups before they were tzaaned up
@ bruticus
The dwarves will be pretty much stock I think I love the Edgar skomorosky ones and wouldn't want to mess too much with the lovely sculpts , maybe add a few old school horns though and the odd arms swap... they will be black smiths primarily out caste demon forgers .. tempted to join clovis's war band to learn the secret magic of tzeentch , they are creating a suit of magic armour for Lothar , as his gifts negate the ability to wear normal armour for long , it just dissolves ;-)

Exactly~! Your sorcerer on the disk-pedestal looks great. I like how you used the sword from the Tzeentch Sorcerer Lord on him. Very fitting weapon. Question - Body of the sorcerer? Which kit is it from? The head is one the new Chaos leaders (blue guy) and the horns are from the plastic Chaos Lord.
Keep it up, guys. This is gonna be wicked.

Post by: PDH
Bruticus - Hey dude. I wanted the tiny hand to look like it was his, like he is directing the familiar with his mind. Magic Storage familiars can adsorb any spell cast on them and then thier master may release one automatically in the magic phase.
I also love that the beast of nurgle cannot use its shotgun....but someone in base contact can use shoot it.
The system is not as advanced as Necro/Mord. Basically as Warbands get Victory Points, eg for winning, killing an opposing gods champion etc, for every 10 the champion rolls on the rewards table: 40% chance of a mutation 60% chance of a gift. A followers will also get a reward at same time. When a champ gets a reward there is also a chance other followers will join his warband. So while you get to see you champion grow in the eyes of the gods there are no stat advances, but that would be easy to incorporate from Mord.
GiraffeX - so much so that I am sure there are bits I still haven't read.
Remi - Yeah I got so lucky meeting my gaming groups being into this odd stuff like me.

Ok my WIP Pestigors. I should only have four but I forgot the banner bearer so had to build a fifth. So I shall have one less mercenary to make up for it (not a fair trade but never mind). I need to add something to the top of the banner and drill some buckle holes into the champions belt.
Double click the pics to zoom in.
What a cute little guy in the musician's belly....
...trying to steal the champions lunch
close up of a belt buckle I made using a nice little tutorial by AWOL that can be found here http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/7614932/4/ along with some very nice models.

Phenomenal work on those pestigors, Peter!
Although I've built and painted a good number of the plastic plaguebearers, I haven't been confident enough to cut them up for my muties. I think I need to rectify that soon. They really do just work wonders for any mutant or plague ridden deviant.

Wow PDH! When I saw this blog pop up a few days ago I knew we would all be in for a treat, and I wasn't wrong. I love these Pestigor conversions, great use of the Plaguebearer bits, and I love how intricately detailed these guys are. The Pestigor metals are some of my favorite miniatures, and I fell in love with with them when they first came out way back when. But as you said, it just wouldn't be PDH blog without conversion, and these new guys are really something to behold.
On the matters of using Lord of the Rings miniatures, what are they like to work with? What's the scale like?I've heard that it's pretty off from the 'heroic' scale of Warhammer. I have that Ungor severed head you used, and it's tiny! Maybe that answers my own questions haha!
And Neil, your Tzaangors look awesome! I'd love a close up on them, it's a bit hard to pick out some of the details. But from what I can see, the Tzaangor with the two weapons looks absolutely baller! It's that eyeless face, it's just so cool!
About the rules in general, they seem like a lot more complex versions of the 'Path the Glory' supplement that featured in a couple white dwarfs around the time 'hordes of chaos' was released, and I'm assuming this is what they were based off of. Very cool game, I played a few games way back when, and I liked the random rolling for your team!
Is the original set that you're using much more complex? The hilarity of a beast of nurgle not knowing how to use his weapon is really quite something!

Both warbands look great so far. Subscribed.

Post by: PDH
HF Izanagi - Cheers Remi. I wish I could take credit for putting the nurgling in his stomach....just an arm. The clothing, armour and fur were the most important part for me.....to change them from daemon to mortal(ish).
Ghosty - Hey dude. Thanks. LOTR minis are tiny and a LOTR goblin is smaller still. The Sorcerer's head goes up to the waste on the Pestigors. I will take some scale shots when I have built the Mercenaries (who I am starting tomorrow night). As for working with them you need to transport them to Warhammer (be that through a boltgun or a Warhammer pouches).
Igandris - Thanks. I love him too. I will have to come up with a suitable name for him.

Erm, back to the topic at hand: Peter, your kitbashing is flawless, as usual! Fantastic job so far!
Neil: Your models are disturbing and ambiguous in a very Tzeentchian way. Very promising, although I would love a closer look at some of the WIPs.
Anyway, a sterling job, gentlemen! Carry on!

Well Like Peter I didn't get much stuff completed on this project - but I recently became re inspired with finishing off the Tzaangors after researching some wonderful depictions of medieval devils ;-) - Part of this project included us creating a secret piece of scenery - something I completed nearly a year ago after a flush of inspiration - it has been sitting idle for a while and I am not sure if I will be completing this project any time soon, so I thought i would pop it on here as well.

@GiraffeX - thanks bud- I have some wip shots of the build if that helps ? I use 3mm -5mm mdf for basing usually its very light and quite strong - and can be cut with a sharp craft knife - well if you use several strokes
@Medium of Death - cheers I think the way the light fell in the first pic is cool. still needs lots of little finishing touches though- like the skulls painting and some scatter moss flock i think - also not really happy with the stone work in the ruin but it will do .

Bird seed for the bird seed god!
Not particularly a Tzeentch fan myself but that is some fantastic scenery. Superb attention to detail and glorious grime. I love the different types of vegetation, that ivy looks especially good. Somewhat in two minds about the plastic tree canopies but I've not seen a better alternative.
I don't even want to play games on this scenery, I just want to arrange some pleasing lighting and get all Ansel Adams, or maybe pose some horrors frolicking in the gardens.
I always love seeing good scenery, even if it does use largely GW parts it is refreshing to see something that doesn't just look like a neatly painted plastic kit.

The scenery, the minis, the Realm of Chaos books... stunning/jaw-dropping/amazing doesn't do it justice.
back in the day, I used the books to create my own lesser Chaos god Grimgnaw Redbane, who had a champion terrified of the colour red.
And for people asking earlier, these books aren't just cool old source books - they are the original source of everything we now take for granted about Chaos.
4 gods, their character, and their stables of greater/lesser/beast/mount creatures. I believe Nurgle existed beforehand, in the WHFRP books, along with Malal - but Slaanesh and Tzeentch wouldn't have existed without these amazing visionary books!

You should make sure you never tell me where you live PDH, otherwise I won't be able to help myself and you might end up missing a window, among other things...

The crossbow men are heavily inspired by Foot of Tapes Mordheim witch hunters http://footoftape.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/burn-witchand-such.html and my own fallen imperial guard http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/419274-Renegade%20Barauchian%20Guardsman%20.html?m=2. These guys are going to be really quick and easy to make.
Captain Roderick - Thanks for the heads up . I think if we had played it properly, as in rolled up the champ and one group of henchman, painted them - played a game etc - rolled up some more henchman -painted them - played a game etc continued with the campaign etc we would have been fine. I think the problem is we attempted too much in one go so we could have a larger(ish) game when we got together. The other thing is having no control over what is in your warband is difficult for motivation/inspiration.
02Laney - Cheers
lennymaybe - Neil blows me away too.
monkeytroll - Ah us old uns are lucky. The kids these days have no idea about what a good chaos book looks like.
Accolade - Thank you, very kind. Should be easy to do with a blood bowl team. The game is simply Warhammer 2nd edition or 3rd with a shed load of tables to roll on.
STC_LogisEngine - Glad you like it. You are providing me with inspiration over on your =][= blog.
Sheep - Cheers
Drazuul - I'm afraid to say I doubt it will last too long since I feel more at home in 40k....though we all know deep down the Warhammer World is at the centre of a certain Warp Storm.

yeah, that always struck me as well - you end up with compulsory choices that require a lot of modelling and time, and it also seemed like the lack of an experience system meant you were less likely to love those models that required so much time and effort to convert and paint. And they could very easily die first game, and then the next followers roll you make requires something entirely different that you then have to spend money and time on, etc.
They definitely learned a lot about how to make skirmish games between then and Mordheim!

Me and Footoftape (whom you mentioned) used to throw a lot of hobby thoughts and ideas back and forth when he was still active in the 40K community. I miss that guy.
Fantastic work on everything as usual, I wish you weren't so innovative with the various bitz and kits you use.
I do like those crossbow-men, I love the archaic / feudal world vibe I'm getting from them. It's projects like these and researching the bonkersRealms of Chaos aesthetics that keep wanting me to jump back into Chaos again.. (I swear this urge happens at least every 12 - 18 months. )
Anything new planned / on the modelling / painting desk?

Mister Feral - I replied this morning but it seems to have not posted.....stupid phone.
I only had very brief contact with Foot, when he last updated his blog with the Inq28 Inquisitor. He is a very talented man. Shame he has gone into hibernation.
I don't consider these innovative but a bit of a copy. Quick and easy. Glad you got the feudal vibe from them because I like to consider them Bretonnian mercenaries.
Get back to the chaos....these words made me sad..I wanted to see your finished Tzeentchian stuff.
Thanks for the kind words!
I'm afraid this project is dead now, I've moved away from the 40K universe / aesthetic to other non-GW projects.
As for what's on my modelling table: Bits for my Mounted Champion on Winged Beast of Nurgle, Ordo Malleus Inquisitor (using something very chaotic as a base) and three Slaaneshii cultists.
Painting Table: Ordo Malleus Storm Trooper and Three Eccliesiarchy Priests

@ PDH that pestiaur & those crossbowmen provided the needed inspiration for a bit of nurgle bashing
@ Monkey cheers mate
Finally managed to get some hobby time dedicated to The changer of ways - I rolled
1human champion ( now twin brothers Clovis the mage and Lothar the warrior )
4 beastmen with bows , one with a ravens head - ( now tzaangors )
3 Skaven
5 Chaos Dwarves with crossbows
1 Flamer ( now flamer skaven halfbreed )
still awaiting two familiars for the skaven.. then on to paint..

Oh my eyes! It burns my rotten eyes! You twisted miniature magician.
Neil every single time you show me miniatures I am blown away. Totally brilliant collection of miniatures that are the embodiment of Tzeentch. Its a shame but according to the rules I have to hate you
The beastman are just amazing. The one with two swords is just stunning.
Really looking forward to seeing where you go with the colour scheme.
I've been building my champion today. Going so slowly because GS takes too long to dry and its bloody big. I have no idea where I'm going to keep it or how I am going to get it to warhammer world without breaking...stupid random tables

Just amazing. So evocative of adrian smiths fantastic drawings from lost and the damned. The tzaangors with the long legs are perfect! And I love the rat ogres, especially moon face. You're making me think way too much about starting a chaos war band!

Damn, those tzaangors are fantastic mate Wonderful use of bits there.
And moonface is awesome...been wanting to do a moonfaced mutie for a while, but going to have to shelf any plans for that now.....not going to beat that....
Spiky squats...errrr, chaos dwarves are pretty darn cool too.
And most intrigued by Peter's big champion now......
I'm sure it must be against the Geneva Convention to allow you two to work on the same blog............

These are all fantastic, really just nothing to criticise at all. Well, maybe one of the dwarves should be holding his crossbow, but that's a minor thing.
The two rat ogre conversions are brilliant, love the headswaps. I also love the unusual proportions on the beastmen.
I love how the little familiar is mimicking the pose of his skaven master.
I actually think my favourite is the chaos warrior Lothar. Looks like a relatively simple conversion - at least, from what I can see - but it's really changed the feel of the model. He looks much more weighty and imposing now. Far more menacing than the stock model.

Would it be OK to pick your brains on some of the bitz used? The unarmoured Tzaangor legs, bodies and arms, also the brd-head for the first Tzaangor (the one with the brilliant hand-stick!).
Heh, hand-sticks.

Aye up folks..
first off , many thanks for all the comments and crits
@Johnnyhorse hope you enjoy what's left to come mate thanks
@PDH it pleases me to hear i can blow you off every now and then
the swords were a right bugger tbh, there are loads of pins in that left arm , and then i had a glue incident that obscured the detail of the hand i should of just bought a new one but i didn't want to be beaten ( read i am cheap ) i was originally going to use the same arm on each side but i kinda liked the size difference and the spiky elbow.
colour wise no solid contenders - probably not too traditional blue purple and white, but you never know - i originally wanted the beastmen to look like this
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/vv215/dolorosa_photos/mywork/Vowed4s-1.jpg
but then i started researching mediaeval daemons and this struck my fancy https://gimmebar.com/view/53444023aac422e4688b4567
i do like the original painted models from the early wd that are quite vide or often muted , and i love the realism spiky rat packs chaos tzeentch dwarf - not that i can paint like Kari
http://www.coolminiornot.com/261579
really looking forward to seeing you beast and champion now mate - tarvelling with big stuff is a pain - and you still need to make your scenery yet haha
@Sheep thanks sheep , i am taking a week or two off to recover form the build and research painting styles i want to try to achieve, thanks yeah i really tried to bring the different elements together by using a few kits but that failed - so the horns became a unifying theme over all i think.- tricky really as i was trying to capture as many different aspects of tzeentch as i know of= fungoid - flame curved horns- horrors ect-- i did plan on adding a fish theme based on heironimous bosch and a serpent skaven , but just didn't have the time or patience to pull it off really -
]
as for mold lines i spent a day cleaning up greenstuff and removing them after i saw my first photos- meh most have gone now , though a few still exist especially on the ridgy horns
@weirdingway thanks mate , i really wanted to capture the seductive devilish playful satyr / faun look with them - i picked up an aulos to use but never got chance unfortunately- well either that or the flaying of marsyas

@Logan Cheers - yeah me too , dreading it a bit though -
@monkey Thanks monkey- yeah i like the gors too - they were touch and go for a bit tbh and a couple never made the grade greenstuff wise- i did knock up a nice companion for the fauns though -
@Bruticus
hey mate , thanks for the crits buddy - yeah i couldn't pull off the crossbow thing i did try but it just didn't sit right with the rest of them - but i do like the dark elf handbow sheaths though .
rat ogres took a while to come to life - i had loads of other skaven first , but none were working for me , and i love the stock models of these ogres so i thought in for a penny and all that.. i like the irony of the bird face rat that eats rats haha so tzeentchian to me .. moon face will have a pal soon and maybe get his own little crescent moon clan in the future .
there is a bit in realm of chaos that talks about tzeentchian flames bursting into life parodying the sorcerer / flamer and i thought this was very apt , cheers
glad you like lothar he took plenty of converting - probably the most actually but i am glad he retains the feel of a heavier original here are the wips
he is based on this guy as much as the winged dude at the start of the blog - i really wanted to get a sense of weight and power behind him -
https://gimmebar.com/view/53443bfdaac4224b688b4567/in/4ef5069a2f0aaa2e2600001c
story wise, kinda based on the clash of the princes book - http://fightingfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Clash_of_the_Princes
@ dathbod - thanks mate
@Mister feral cheers buddy, i cant take creds for hand sticks though , they are an old wargames staple - the idea probably belong to John Blanche originally though..

https://gimmebar.com/view/534439eeaac422da678b456d/in/4ef5069a2f0aaa2e2600001c
although i was not really trying to emulate that , just to capture a modern version of pink horror arm champion
https://gimmebar.com/view/53443bffaac4221a688b4567/in/4ef5069a2f0aaa2e2600001c
as well as pay tribute to Dale hursts original tzeentchian warband bird head men back in the day
http://eldritchepistles.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/bryans-cabinets-of-chaos-5.html
edit oops I forgot to add, the bits used for the tzaangors are , goblins lotr body, blood letter legs, one arm from the ghouls kit I think and the bird head is from the empire captain griffin familiar
@nathanie1 cheers mate
@Llamahead - funny you should mention the eternal champion - i have been thinking of picking it up recently -- well one trilogy anyhow
thanks folks

Mmmm, like the companion piece, you should finish that and magnetise it....
I do like where you were going with the fish-steed too, very cool idea.
And where's the serpent head on the skavesnake from?

Post by: Bruticus
RIght so Lothar has had loads of work done, I didn't notice from the original pic. He is really great, such an improvement on the stock model. Vilitch just has too many bits sticking out all over, but you've pared him down to a classic chaos warrior. The drooping shoulder and heavy mace work great, as do the low angled wings - he seems relaxed but solid, imposing. And his cyclopean helmet looks alert, like he is just staring. Quite evocative of Magnus the Red as well, with the eye and the wings. Yeah, easily my favourite of the bunch, just great.

@ Mr feral , apologies for not answering your question earlier mate, for some reason I couldn't edit my original post .
The legs on the tzaangors are blood letters as you guessed, the bodies are lotr goblins, and one arm , the one with rock is from the ghoul kits ? I think, the bird head is from the empire general griffin familiar.
BTW I have called him PDF and phd on more than one occasion :-P
@ lamahead, I knew their were a few books but had no idea there were so many, I read they were in trilogies , it was one of the first books called the eternal champion I was going to pick
Up ,although I had read it wasn't the best tbh , but I won't be reading all 70 anytime soon though , thanks for the info on the hawkmoon stuff I will bear it in mind if I decide to pick up a book or two, cheers,
@ Migs - Cheers
@ Bruticus Thanks bud , I just need to sort out his extra thumb on his mace hand might give him a loose gauntlet or just leave it as a tzeentchian gift

Willken Gortfreid cowardly Champion of Nurglitch a top Blightsting - the ant faced, shotgun tentacled, winged, giant beast of Nurgle.
This was fun and time consuming, wings are tacked on at the moment as I imagine they will get in the way for painting.
...now does anyone have any suggestions as to how I paint this colour of slug?
34119
Post by: neil101
He is immense ! that is perfect example of a beast of nurgle mate - just bigger and nastier... the champions shield and throne are great ideas , i have no idea what bits you have used which is a treat , the ant face is cool great use of the horns as antenna, no idea how you might capture the slug colour though , looks like you will need a dark brown base that blends with a karki sand colour upto a light grey and an orange dry brush on top maybe experiment a mottle effect.
he is going to take quite a bit of paint i imagine,
btw what is the base model for your champion ?
just superb work mate , i really cant wait to see the warbands together duelling it out in the chaos wastes!
32193
Post by: PDH
Neil mate I cannot wait until we all duel it out too. Do we know how Tears of Istvaan is getting on with his warband?
I think Gottfried is going to be a lot of effort to paint and use a lot of paint. JB, El-D and Krauty have all given some good advice about the paint scheme. Now I just need to hear from JRN and I should be able to get cracking...on the crossbow men and pestitaur.
The Champion hiding behind his shield is: Chaos Knight legs and shoulder pads, FW Death Guard torso, Plague Bearer arms, flag head, A horn, shield is a icon from the chaos alter I think. More angles when he is painted at the moment there is still a nice aura of decay....sorry I meant surprise.
My favourite bit is the wooden spikes jutting out of the beast.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Wow, gruesome gribbliness all present and correct sir!
I want to see it painted just to see some more angles on it
For that slug-look you'd really want a grey base with browns and orange over the top, although not sure how well that would work with the texture of the beast as opposed to the slug texture....
So no real help there then
9405
Post by: Mister Feral
A wonderful centrepiece there PDH, love how you've incorporated a Rot Fly into the Beast of Nurgle. I look forward to seeing it painted, mainly because in it's current state it isn't the easiest to make out all the details you've added. The slug looks like a terracotta base highlighted up to a strange yellow-orange & flesh mix to me. The shading appears to me to be a rather ruddy brown. Neil, I adore rum too! Give me black or dark rum anyday! Thanks for the bitz rundown as well, it all makes sense now in my head.

Wow! I am trying to convert a WoC force dedicated to Nurgle as well, and this has really inspired me to get back to work. I also think I need to get a set of Plague Bearers and get to work with Green Stuff as you have with the Pestigors.
Tremendously creative (and sometimes disgusting) work!
I think I would actually be frightened to face some of these models on the tabletop!

Extremely cool models, you may be right about the faces, though
Edit: the ant-faced winged beast of Nurgle is absolutely godlike!
9405
Post by: Mister Feral
Lovely painting as per usual, even though they are filthy mercenaries.
If you are considering adding something extra to the faces, a subtle glaze of the wonderfully garish orange used for the buboes would work around the eye-stitches and in the recesses of the heads, I reckon.
32193

monkeytroll, Darth Bob - Cheers boys. Its really simple bit of Ork Hibe Shade, less of each of these Hawk Terquioise, Ice Blue and White. Then bung in a shed load of water and then let it flow into the cracks.
pantheralegionnaire - Cheers. Still a lot of credit has to be given to Foot of Tape.
JimmyGrill - Probably going to leave the faces for the time being. Got started on the Minotaur this evening and that is much more fun. Thanks about the beastie.
Mister Feral - I'm thinking they are too clean. I'd be worried that the orange would be a little too much but I suppose a glaze wouldn't hurt. Sod it going to give it a whirl.

Pestitaur of Nurglitch
Ha ha I made you take a closer look at his balls I had such fun with this model. Pretty much done - after taking pics I think the right arm needs a little more Clear Red. I also need to get some Clear Green for the yellow areas and some other bits and bobs. I'm really happy with the way his face and balls turned out!
Mister Feral - I will get back to you soon...just about to watch a film

35006
Post by: Medium of Death
As above, it's very hard to tell what you altered. Pulled together seamlessly.
I like the way he's turned out. While he is horrific I almost get the impression that he would still be somewhat jovial. Letting out foul bellows of laughter now and then. I think it's the ears that do it.

Post by: Llamahead
That's gruesome awesome and twisted although it doesn't look that minotaur like its still great

Post by: PDH
Mister F - I am lucky that here in Preston we have a really well stocked railway model shop for the Tamiya Clear colours. The Windsor and Newston inks are from at art shop.
The clear colours eg red gorey sections on the pestitaur. I simply painted the area a raw pink colour. After sealing the mini i slopped on the clear red (with a little gw black) for the glossy blood. Quick and simple for a vibrant glossy effect.
The Windsor and Newton are simply artists inks. I used orange and red on the models mixed with water (not enough on the crossbow men hence the brightness). They are very bright/vivid. But they don't dry properly (as in if you get paint on it afterwards they will mix with the piant..and change its colour)...so you need to put them on at the very end before sealing. I only really use these for boils.
Mister F and MoD - The ears are my favourite addition. They make him feel more bovine. I think he looks quite sad..like an unhappy clown.
Llamahead -Cheers. I think he looks like a bull who has mutated into an ogre. The eyes have morphed into one and his snout into a maw. His legs are backwards jointed too. He is just a pile of mutations and plague.
84355
Post by: weirdingway
Fantastic, and so incredibly disgusting! I think the bovine ears, hands holding weapons despite being attached to split maw arms, and clothing/ornaments make it even grosser and sadder than the original plague ogryn. Not to mention the open wounds. The tamiya clear is a great effect.
I made the mistake of using Windsor and Newton inks as an under layer once, and they really do bleed up through anything on top of them, even primer or pure medium.

I like him, he looks quite friendly really, a little bit like a Cyclopean Nick Frost with that beard. Maybe a Simon Pegg plaguebearer to go with him?
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Excellent paint job to go with the excellent build
I like him a lot, very characterful. Did you consider adding a wash to the edges of the open wounds for a rawer look, or was it a concious decision to go for 'clean' edges?
Interesting note on the W&N inks...I've not played with mine that much, picked up a few as they seemed to be quite vivid (I really miss the old, old red and yellow GW inks ), I'll have to bear that in mind. I presume a layer of sealant after the inks would be adequate precaution?

weirdingway - Bleed through was the phrase I was looking for Cheers
Bruticus - Ha ha I like Nick Frost - hmmm a skinny ginger plague bearer.
monkeytroll - I was very much concious about not wanting to cover him in blood. I guess the wound edges could do with a little pinking up. I repainted my crossbow men last night (too much brown) and did a little more work on their faces, even after a purity seal the W&N bled into the new highlights.

Grimey, baby!
I have tried to paint "dirty" like this, but just couldn't get it done. It looks easy, but I find it rather hard to achieve... sadly, cause I like this kind of style a lot and try to develop more into this direction.
EDIT: these are real Blanche miniatures, aren't they?

Morning guys,
Nothing much new to show off. Just some additions to the Pestituar and Crossbowmen
The Crossbow men were really bugging me. They just looked like brown blobs....so I repainted their jackets. Also did some more work on their faces. Much happier now.
From this to this
Added a little more gore to the wounds and pinked up the edges on Monkeytrolls suggestion....good one Cheers Monkey

Hand banners yay !
@ PDH , the jackets in burgundy look great , really ties the group together .BTW the cow eared monstrosity looks brilliant, I really like the way you manage to keep the overall models so neat but yet so full of character .
Damb I need to get my paint on ...

Good changes, I consider these an upgrade. I wasn't really bothered with the look of the crossbowmen before, but they do look better now.
Painting over "finished" minis is always a difficult decision, and personally I almost always refrain from doing it. Minis are never ever "finished", in the same sense that an army or project can never be finished, you just choose to declare them as such at a certain point. Mostly, I am happy to accept the shortcomings of my previous work and move on to the next one, trying to do it better this time around.
I did go back recently, though, repainting the bases of all the models I had painted for my army at that point.

Excellent improvements I hadn't really clocked anything wrong with the crossbowmen, but the switch to burgundy has certainly made a difference. And much prefer the raw wound look the pink has given the pestitaur.

neil101 - Hi buddy. Get yer paint on! Happy with the crossies now. I cannot stress how much they were bugging me. I've also decided to do a Fulgrim and not show off the champion until we get together.
JimmyGrill - I answered your question from last year on Papa Nurgle this morning - round bases because they look better, its a skirmish game so I don't need to worry about ranking up. I get what you mean about models being finished 99% of the time when I seal it its done. I actually cannot think of any other group I've gone back over after finishing them. Going back to repaint your army bases sounds tedious. I always paint the base first and that way when the model is done I don't have the boring task of making a base. I'm thinking of painting all the bases for my guard army (platoon) in one go.
monkeytroll - I agree. Thank you for pointing out the shortcomings on the Pestituar.

Thanks. I did have a little play around with a purple W&N ink - turns out it was more a bright magenta but I found it was pretty similar to GW glazes so that's good.
The Tamiya's on the other hand I don't get yet. I tried some yellow clear as a glaze on a Squig, but it started to peel away the previous layers of GW paint - wasn't too pleased about that. Shame!
I'm liking the burgundy repaint for the jackets, much better!

Painting of the slug is going really rather well....slow but well. I've dug out my pots of Amythyst Purple and Emerald Green for the carapace! For you young uns they are metallics
Mister F - damn that sucks about the clear yellow. I'm glad that's never happened to me but I'll be worried next time I use it.
Glad you like the repaint.

Righty O , so not wanting to fall too far behind with the paint , and the deadline for finishing these bad boys fast approaching, I slapped on the dwarves tzeentchy paint .
These guys were really tricky to paint , so much detail . probably the most detailed mini i have tried to paint actually . it was a bit of a struggle as i am not the best at detail.. I wanted to capture the feel of a pre realms of chaos paint style of early warhammer fantasy , when models were painted with realistic earthy tones, as opposed to the brighter more fantastical stuff of the realms of chaos period , having said that the purple skin is pretty much inspired by this era . I guess because they are modern miniatures you can never really capture a bygone style completely , and i think the ended up looking like a cross between mierce miniatures famoriac as painted by the outstanding painter Sébastien Picque (of deadfishpainting.com) - and Julian baylis's marauders .

no bad thing though.. ;-)
Inspiration examples: early warhammer fantasy earthy tones
http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/bc6-frontx-01.jpg
http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/bc6-rearx-01.jpg
later warhammer realms of chaos brighter style
I struggled quite a lot with the bases , I couldn't decide if I wanted a snow effect , or a swirly tzeentch magic effect, in the end I opted for both ;-) i found a brilliant article about basing ice effects using clear crackle paints , which I followed to the letter , but in the end I went with a more simple snow effect, to counter the insane level of detail on the models .
http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/43463-tutorial-creating-ice-bases/
i hope the snow effect will help them sit on the terrain i made for them a bit easier , although creating season independant bases for the whole group will have the the nagtive effect of making them look like a sepertae bunch of figures when viewed together not on the terrain.

Lovely stuff mate. I think that last one is over compensating with the size of them horns. The darkness of the models combined with the dirty turquoise and pink really give these models a modern look imo. As always i'm impressed with your colour schemes. Remind me was the purple skin a choice or a roll on the attrbutes table?
Whats hitting the painting table next?
Will enjoy all the spoilers later as my break isn't long enough.
Aw crap i forgot about the terrain. Will have to dig it out of its drawer.
Enjoy the good weather and the gardening.

They look fantastic, such great models as well, I'd love a whole army of those little guys. Did you see much of Turska's chaos dwarfs? He made the big hat ones look fantastic as well, a similar dark style.
I love the purple skin, I think the extra contrast really helps as - although I hate this expression and the airbrush style that it will make you think of - it makes them pop. I also think the contrast with the base colour works really well, especially with tiny miniatures they could easily get lost on a dark base.
I always loved Aekold Helbrass, the champion of Tzeentch who caused life to spring up whereever he stepped. I could see Tzeentch having similar fun with your warband, making snow fall around the dwarves.
Also I love the little book familar, I've got a collection of those!

@pdh big horns little feet. Tzaangors next if I can learn to paint skin .
@ bruticus thanks , not seen turkska's untill you mentioned them, they are brilliant, especially love muted tones.
@monkey cheers buddy I just inked over the paintwork on the book , let it dry a little and rubbed it back off with a damp tissue , seemed to give a nice distressed look.
@ giraffex these chaos dwarves remind me of the goblins from harry potter.
@jimmygrill, I picked up the book heroes of wargaming for inspiration on these. I reccomend it.
@medium of death yeah , I get that , I think its a well worn trope , rumplestiltkskin etc..
@cap'n thanks mate , its a bit heavy on the wash's but I think it works well enough.
@ize cheers buddy loving your Nurglii hand banners too.
@ Lamby thanks bud , yeah crackle paints are so handy.

Brilliant Chaos Dwarves there Neil, I love the muted tones you've gone for.
I would like to ask how you did the swirling blue and purple test base? The final snow bases are great as well. (wouldn't of though of using crackle medium for ice. I must get some of the clear stuff, I have the Old Paper one at the moment.)

Amazing work as always!
Great to see the Blight Sting completed, you nailed that slug texture/color you were after, and the wings - o my, they're beautiful.
And Gortfried's armour - superb and subtle use of crackle and verdigris blue is wonderful.
His pus-riddled skin is gross too (in a good Nurglii way)!

Willken's armour is brilliant, fantastic crackle effect on the shoulder pad.

We were also tasked with building a god specific terrain piece. I did my best but Neil is just superb with terrain and I don't think its even in the same league as his Season's of Tzeentch. Here is a Nurgle's Garden with plague pools that look a hell of a lot like Jam Tarts!
The game was great and I hope to find a few pictures to post here for you.
Lamby, Monkey and GiraffeX - Thanks guys. It was fun but I'm glad its done. This Oldhammer thing really isn't as good as more modern GW games....like 2nd Edition 40k and Nercomunda! It is so complicated that we spent most of the time in the books. Creating a Daemon Weapon is more completed than a maths GCSE paper and probably lasts twice as long!
Jimmy - The wings were easy. White Spray undercoat. Washed the wings with thinned down rust brown. Gave it a couple of layers. Dry brushed them with a Rotting Flesh colour. Did this again with a little white to the mix. Washed it with really thing blue and black wash. Dry brushed again. Added a really thin glaze of the rust coloured paint along the wing sections as appropriate. Gloss Varnish

That Champion is outstanding now that he's finished.
It's a shame that the rules are terribly convoluted, at least fun was had though and excellent models have been created.

I should point out one of things about oldhammer I did like was magic. Wizards are still level 1-4 and for each level they know three spells. Eg a level 2 wizard would know 3 level one spells and 3 level two spells. The higher the spell level the better it is. Then at the beginning of the game you roll up your magic points for the game. level one has 3d6, level two has 6D6. and then through the game as you cast spells your total decreases. I felt it was quite tactical. Oh and every unit has a magic save.
Cheers MoD

Mister Feral wrote:Yummmmmmmm, jam tart plague terrain! I do like that deep magenta sheen the liquid pits have. Lovely.
Yeah, same here! Peter, I wish you hadn't pointed out the similarity, because now I have a huge appetite for jam tarts, aligned on my plate to form a symbol of Nurgle
The warband is absolutely, utterly stunning, like most anything you try your hand at. If I had to pick a favourite part of the project, it would have to be the slug effect on the daemonic steed, though: That part looks like it's been taken from an actual slug (I wouldn't put it beyond you, you know ). Almost makes me want to start a Khornate RoC warband...
As for the terrain, don't feel bad about it not holding up to Neil's Garden of Tzeentch: Compared with Neil's work, about 99% of terrain pieces look like children's play -- I cannot even begin to imagine how boring other people's terrain projects must look to him
Anyway, always a pleasure to see your updates, Peter!

Aye up..
@ Mister feral , apologies for the belated reply , the swirly blue bases are half & half light blue colour over a white base , ie citadel ice blue or p3 trollblood base, and a purple paint i think i used liche purple.. a varnush of tim holtz clear rock candy crackle effect and when that dries , a wash of purple ink.. it cam out better on my two champions though ;-)
@ Peter , absolutely brilliant , really good to see them together mate , blight wing is just gobsmakingly good, really gross .. the orange like others have said is perfect.. i like the dry rusty Armour shoulder plate best though.. shame he flew away at the sound of thunder , he really is a yellow belly
Well i cant match Peter's brilliant group shot , as i never got chance to photo the warband before the game we played , but i did take some photos of them in game . Thanks to peter for the rat ogre shot
