Alright lads! its time for another round, and well you know what that means time to get the models rolling. This round is to create a tank or monster creature. That is correct the big beast with cannons and treads, or wait, with legs?! Yes this round all tank types are allowed to be entered. If you want to do a transport go for it, if you want to do a cannon wielding doom engine, go for it included in this is of course war walkers. Nothing that flies please! - if your creature has wings, but isn't modeling in a flight mode it is fine.
Rules and Doo Dads Model must be a tank type and armored AND OR a monster creature! YEAH carnage. Model must be painted - even if you are not the best gold deamon status painter - this category is only a mild scale tipper Painting as follows -will be judge be effort which includes, but is not limited too:
Spoiler:
highlighting washing OSL gem effects power weapon effects weathering and lastly freehanding
Basing is also a requirement (IF IT HAS ONE) Main judging will be done based on the rule of cool
I'm in. I have a custom tyranid apoc unit I've been wanting to build for a while. (Apoc units are allowed right?) It's a bit of a streatch but I think it'll work.

I believe! and welcome.

Yes, its a tankish thing.

I suppose a monster creature should also be allowed. Size of the model does not matter. So APOC a ok.
Good luck one and all - as you can see my name is up in lights for this so I'll be sitting back with Panda and perusing your undoubtedly awesome entries

You can still do stuff, but you have become a judge!
BESTOW JUDGEMENT
I WANT TO JOIN... i need a new unfinished project again
and it will be a walker of enourmous proportions... a project i have planned for quite some time...and it will be IKEA sponsored so highly educational and everybody could later on make one on their own...
the build will be ideal for apocalypse settings!!!
I'm undecided Panda on whether I'll enter - I have some more business trips abroad over the next few weeks, plus I don't have any vehicles at the moment that I want to build... But I sure as hell will enjoy seeing all the effort from our wonderful contestants and I'll be singing this the whole way...
I have something that I've roughed out but needs a tonne if work. Would that be allowed or does it have to be something brand new off of the sprue?
Also, it's 9cm/3.5inches tall but it's not a 'codex unit' just something from the depths of my imagination. It could probably run as a Daemon Prince if I had to give it a name. Is that a suitable Monstrous Creature entry?

We are only here to judge the paint and finish look, any assembly stage is fine even up to the primer.

Am I right in thinking that Monsterous Creature entries have to be armoured in the 'tank' theme? I'll be doing that anyway but if it's not necessary I might not put on quite as much.
Well I'm in then. I was going to finish my crusader leviathan, but as I am currently working on my necromunda figs, my arbites ride is getting my attention. Progress has already begun in my p&m blog. It started from a tank from the dollar store. Here is the current standings of it.
It is part of my grim dork dark comedy police force.

Well how does one make a big creature tanky? Are you saying Thick carapace? I would have to say a large creature should look bulky, but for lack of a better way to say this, there is no clear way to define a creature as tanky. The only limiting function I am going to have is that it walks on the ground. And preferably without wings, but it can have them if not modeled flying.

Well I was thinking that they might have to be wearing thick armour but I guess that wouldn't work with things like Tyranids. If it's not part of the brief that's a good thing though, it means I don't have to put on more than I intended. Mine will be firmly on the ground and wingless too so I'm all good.

Also lads who joined I am posting a recommended completion guide. This is just so you have more events on your calendar and don't forget you have a comp that you joined. Less walks of shame are needed!
2/7/13 Have your model completely built, and primed 9/7/13 Have your model begin on the painting tree 16/7/13 Finish your model including base and show results.
Again these are just a sample method I know many of us prefer anarchy of structure, but for those that can stick to a deadline this is a good method to do it.

Well, you know I have wip pics as I went along to make the tanks I converted or made from scratch, but mine are built at present already, and I am trying to catch up on other things. I wonder if I presented the wips and such if they would count?

wut?
Sleep deprivation and too much caffeine! Project is coming along though...
Right wasn't sure what I was doing for this round but I've managed to find something. Sadly the hobby budget is a bit lacking at the moment so I had a look in the spares box and found this Hellbrute that came with a load of random miniatures off ebay. I know he isn't really a tank but as walkers and big monsters are allowed I figured he would be an ok entry. I had to soak him in Dettol and give him a scrub first then I did some minor conversions. I got rid of the multi melta and added some las-cannon barrels from a razorback kit. A couple of old bolt pistols were filled down and stuck underneath his power fist to be a twin linked bolter. the original head was replaced with an old chaos warrior head and one of the Hellbrute's chains was cut off and repositioned. I primed him before I took the WIP photos which was probably a bad idea as I'm not sure the details stand out now.

Oh and I added to the story
Yay, well if it isn't painted your fine!
I will read that story.
Finally some good Smitty brand WIPs for you guys! I was originally going to do a couple of basilisk, but then I noticed an untended and unloved model sitting behind my work station.
Behold! The first (and currently, only) Leman Russ Vanquisher from the Cadian 7th Armoured! I re-primed the model from a horrible mistake I made, so now it will get the glory it finally deserves!
So, even after seeing what some of you talented lunatics are up to in here, I'm still going to toss my hat in the ring. Mainly just for the fun of it and some feedback.
I'm currently adding a second Deff Dread to my WAAAGH!!, here's what I'm going with so far.
Everyone's entries look the bomb! So psyched to see them progress.

Haha, thanks man but it needs loads of work. I don't know about 'brave', I'm terrified to work on a project like yours, plasticard scratchbuilding type things are way out of my league!
seems like a tank to me/monster.. we will go with monster. If you can add treadz somehow that be amazing. Like a tank towing it or something, right now i am on the fence
Fellow contestants? What do you think? I am leaning towards ok.
Lots of great WIP shots on here. Some real monsters being built. Thought I'd post a few more WIP shots of my Hellbrute. Sticking to the colour scheme of my preferred Chaos marines, the Sons of Malice, I've done the quartered black (though the black looks more blue in the photos than in real life) and white armour and have moved onto the flesh areas lots of highlighting needed on the flesh yet.
So how long have we got left a little over two weeks?........need to get my skates on .
Been a bit quiet on my entry so far as I've been busy with other things, but I'm getting into the swing of it now. I'll probably get a WIP photo up on Friday, as I'm away for the next two days.
DiDDe wrote: That Hammerhead is amazing! built from a german panther and yet i can't help to think that it now kinda looks like a russian SU-85.

actually i was looking at the wrong box, its a Kanonenjagdpanzer 4 , german , cold war era.
it does look like a SU-85 though... i think they may have based the shape of it, all the tank destroyers of the ww2-to-cold war era looked very similar.
Being a big fan of dinosaurs, and having seen the guns, beer and dinosaurs thread over on Warseer, I was inspired to add a few of the big lizards to my list.
A $7.00 run to the craft store later, I found a base model and went to work. I started construction on this guy last week and finished him up this morning. The quality on the dino toy was surprisingly good. It took a little green stuff to clean up the mouth joints, and a little knife work to remove mold lines and a brand-name logo on his belly, but he painted up pretty easily. Here are the pics:
Sgt "Rock" Chesterfield and his xeno-sentinel "Bessy" are not ready to secure the flanks of the 187th Catachan Special Forces Regiment. There's nothing like a stogie to accompany the smell of promethium in the morning. It smell like victory.
Wow!! That is freaking cool wonkobaggins! I just took the time to look at all the entries, you guys are all some great modelers. Im looking forward to seeing these entries.
The Hellbrute is coming along flesh and bone areas are now done. Next up all the metallics on the armour edges......... and damn do chaos space marines like their armour to be ornate
Losteriksson- Nice dude, NICE. Those colors on CSM work so well, I cant believe I havent seen more of it.
Smitty- Good looking tank sir, I like that camo netting. I checked out your thread and I like those tanks. The Exterminator turrett looks really cool on that WIP on page 1.

Oh, that wasn't mine. The only tank that is mine is the one that I finished painting and the one I used for a size comparison. Another user posted that because he thought I'd like it, which I did. I can understand the confusion though.
@Smitty- Sorry dude, feel like a total jack ass on that one. Its what I get for not reading carefully. Either way, your stuff is cool.
And my entry is complete, I call it "Raven Guard Razorback with heavy bolter". And yes, I intend to drill the barrels its just that I haven't found a drill bit yet. Hopefully before the competition ends.
I decided to upload better pictures. I kind of suck at taking pictures, and I don't know how to keep the camera from blurring certain parts (I am using manual focus).
Ah dam keep missing the rounds I really want to enter due to other stuff getting in the way, some lovely work chaps, will have to keep an eye out for round 6 and hope it's something I like
Well I'm afraid I'm probably going to bow out. The competition is great and I love seeing everyone's entries from beginning to end, but my original army idea has changed drastically, and the tank just doesn't it the army anymore. That and I just can't seem to get the motivation to get the airbrush out to paint those hard to reach spots on it. Too many design flaws, it shall go to the box of shame, and be recycled at a later date. Best wishes to all you guys in he competition, your skills are amazing it will be hard to decide a winner here.
It annoys me completely, but once again I'll have to step down from the competition. My idea just isn't coming together and there's no way I'll finish it on time, and judging by the standard of the other entries, I would have stood zero chance anyhow!
Well done everyone else so far, I especial like the looted carnifex and the tau tank.
Here's my entry, I changed my mind about the drop pod and went for a hellbrute instead. He's actually a bit further along, I just haven't uploaded pics yet. Looking good for finishing this one in time.
By Gork's left fang, you bastards are good. I will still finish my entry but it's nothing in comparison to the stanard on display here. I doff my looted cap to you gitz.
Flyers could work, give me a chance to do my count as helldrake
Anyway painting continues, actually a lot more done then it looks. Just a coat of wash and a ton of fiddly bits left
Amazing entries everyone, I'm sorry to see a few people drop out but it doesn't always work out how we hoped.
I'm really, really, reeaallly behind! But I'm determined to get it finished now that I've put in so much effort, even if I have to paint it the day before. I'll get a WIP up later to show where I'm at. He's humongous now! Wish me luck!
Everything is still looking great guys. I have learned my lesson from this and my previous challenge, I can't stay on track that long. I still can't even find my mantis marine from that challenge, so I think I win that because he camouflage is so good it's been hidden for weeks .
Here's a little collage of my finished entry. Not happy at all with the pictures but they'll have to make do; I probably won't get a chance to take any better ones as Im going away for a week tomorrow.
Spoiler:
'It follered me 'ome, boss. Can I keep it?'
If I do get a chance to get better photos tomorrow, I will.
For those asking about joining, i'm sure panda will be happy to have more entries but I can't actually speak for him. Deadline is soon so I'd make a start even if you haven't heard back from him.

I just replied to everyone, so I am trying to let you know. In the future I will post this as a rule, you can always join at any point in time as long as you can finish the date of the dead line.
As far as size and things. Is it a tank? or a MC? Sure join! I am sure a well done rhino will compete well.
Well then, this looks like a perfect opportunity to introduce myself with an entry that shows a little of what I'm about; You see, tanks and vehicles are a bit of a thing of mine. I've been quietly showing my work on another corner of the internet, but it's time I start showing to a larger audience.
Let me introduce you to one of my early prototypes. Oh yeah, I guess I should mention, I also have a bit of a thing for magnets...
Things have changed since I first started building like this and my technique has improved considerably. I'm happy with how this early build turned out, but I do more to keep the build cleaner along the way, to avoid extra cleanup at the end.
I added some physical dings, scratches, and distressing to the model just before priming to give the vehicle some character.
Designation: Loricatus Pattern Mk.I Heavy Armoured Predator with Extra Armour, Havoc Launcher, and Destroyer Blades.
This humble entry is just the tip of the iceberg. I'll be setting up a WIP thread here at Dakka over the next few days. I've got lots of older projects to share, and plenty of new ideas in the works that I'll be showing step-by-step over the coming weeks and months.
@Inmygravenimage the logo was just a piece of plasticard. I freehanded the design then cut it out and added the rivets
@ProfessionalAmateur that looted carnifex is awesome, the mix of bio and mech is great
@SelvaggioSaky really great job, really entertaining piece and the tusks on the face work well
@Subtle Discord that predator rocks, the paintjob and detail is incredible
I may just miss out on making the deadline... What sucks is that I would have finished on time (if only just) if I hadn't tryed to mess about with the mask yesterday, ruining it and having to restart... then stuffing it again...
Grahh...

@Selvaggio, great job!
@Discord, that's... seriously chunky @Matt, if I've said once, I'll say it again - have courage, faith and beer, and it will be done!
Oh don't worry, I will complete it, just not before the deadline. The stuffing up with the head wasn't paint, it was greenstuff... so not a quick fix ;(
I will post pics when done, maybe not directly here, but I'll def post a link.
Nae hair ...well, very little to warrant owning a hair dryer.
I'm trying to keep it warm and dry when curing but the real issue is I've bitten off a bit more than I can chew. There is so much work involved that this was going to be tight even before my mid comp delays. If I don't finish in time I'll have learnt a valuable lesson all the same which was the point of entering. Next time I'll keep it simple, or simpler at least.
Great work guys, serious contest here. Good luck to everyone.
@ Casey's Law .....If I need it quick, I cheat with the greenstuff and use a product which is way more expensive but cures in about 10 minutes. It can be mixed with GS to make it a little slower. I buy it at the hardware store, labelled as plumbers putty, for seeling leaky pipe fast. Sets like steel. Only down side is you have to be very very quick with sculpting it, or do like me Dremel sculpt after its set. Its great for building up models as its stickier than GS. It's quite expensive though. (In fact the sump on my car got a nice hole from a speed bump a while ago, Used this stuff to seal it, and over a year later still sorted.)
I started to lose hope when I saw Losterickssons entry. Then I saw Selvaggio Salky's orky awesomeness, which was quickly followed by a left hook from Subtle Discord. Then I realized ashotnija was, in fact, the creator of the Eden Defense Force. My hope is gone. May throw my paints in a river.
I dont mean to leave anyone out. Looks like all participants really thought out their entry and put a lot of time and effort in.
I have already melted my entry down for a beer mat for my beer to drown my sorrows, the work here is amazing.
Snapped all my paintbrushes over my knee, used paint to redecorate my kids bedroom, and greenstuffed up the cat flap....
Not in it to win it, never have been, never could be. The work being pumped out this round is just staggering. So don't loose heart have faith that you are amongst brothers and sisters who have faith in you.

Seriously, lets see what you guys got! some have completed, more is needed. I want this to be a competition, not a lay the bodies across the train tracks when one model is nicely done. I need to have a hard time here!
Yeh... there is no way I'm going to finish in time.
I entered as part of an overall effort to start competing to improve my skills. Although I haven't been able to complete it in time I've learnt an important lesson for future competitions. Next time I'll aim a little lower and tackle something I have at least a little hope of completing in time.
If anyone was interested in where my Nork Warboss was heading I'll be continuing him on my blog and I welcome all input.
Good luck to everyone who is entering, all the entries I have seen are mindblowing! I couldn't possibly choose a winner!

Thanks mate. Deadline is today and he doesn't even have arms... I seriously underestimated how long this bit would take, I think this is the first time I've actually worked to a proper deadline.
