ORIGINAL POST
Alright, here we go, my first blog!

So, after this long since I joined DakkaDakka I decided it was time to create a P&M Blog so I (hopefully) can get a broader range of C&C and act as a progress log for myself. A place where I (again hopefully) can see my own improvement

So, long ago (sure feels like a long time ago), when I was 14-15 years old, I was first introduced to Warhammer Fantasy. I did learn back then that I enjoyed painting. I painted several Lizardmen Warriors, nothing too fancy, but there was no way I could afford do regularly buy models. No money and I honestly didn't like it that much. Too much confusion with the movement rules. Funny enough, I only found out about 40k a few months after I gave up on Fantasy.

After that, I have been devouring what I could about 40k over the years. The Dawn of War was my first big intro to the lore of 40k. Loved it. Ever since then I was a big time fan of the fluff.
3 years ago after I started working I discovered a bookshop that sold BL novels near my workplace. First time I ever saw them for sale in Portugal. Bought one to check it out (it was Angels of Darkness by Gav Thorpe) and I have been hooked ever since. This fed me an enormous desire to actually start playing 40k.

And so last year I finally bit the bullet. And boy, am I happy now My only regret is not starting sooner. Started with the Necron Battleforce and some advice from a FLGS owner who has always been a great help to me, read the "How to paint Citadel Miniatures" book and off I went, to the wonderful world of painting.

I have noticed I truly enjoy the act of turning a lump of plastic into something, well, beautiful. My minis aren't still Golden Deamon standard, far from it, but I feel an immense joy when I look at them and think "Wow, they were just pieces of plastic before I painted them."

Well, that's enough about me Time for some pretty pics! I did post these pics before in my first "Showcase" post but for sake of completeness, I'm posting them here again. Like I said, I want a progress log since my beginning until where I currently stand and see my own improvement.

Necron Warriors (my first minis):

Spoiler:

This is my Harlequin, also known as Bob the Blob. Say hi, Bob!

Spoiler:

Poor guy was the one who suffered my many experiences until I decided I wanted a very simple scheme for my warriors to show their "lowly" rank. But I liked him so much, I added some extra colours and he was ready to kick some butt as the squad leader.

Group shot!

Scarabs:

These little guys were the next ones I decided to paint. After completing my warriors I felt a bit sad with the almost empty bases. I decided I was going to improve that:

Spoiler:

Something that necrons really aren't famous for but I love are squad leaders. I felt I needed them, even if it's completely against the "normal" fluff. Hence my Harlequin and the 4 different scarabs here. Just for fun, I decided to create some very jewel like scarabs, each one with a precious stone as the "eye" (Red - Ruby, Green - Emerald, Blue - Sapphire, Yellow - Topaz).

Immortals:

These were my first real challenge. I just couldn't figure out how to paint them. I wanted to give the impression they were more badass, much more "colder", but I had no idea how. Thankfully my FLGS owner helped once again! 50% leadbelcher + 50% Vallejo silver. After that, Blue Glaze all over the miniature to give away a "cold metal" feeling. This is now my "Living metal" scheme. I also added much more blue to show how they were much more important than the lowly warriors (but still not important enough for warm colours):

Spoiler:

And once again, a squad leader:

Spoiler:

I really wanted this guy to stand out from the rest. Even his energy source is different from everyone else, and a warm colour to boot!
No Bonus point if you know where I got the inspiration from

Group shot!

Ghost Ark (oh, the pain!):

This one took me ages to complete. Again, a problem deciding the colour scheme. First I figured I wanted the "ribs" to be bone coloured to give the impression it was from an ancient animal long dead, but I figured it was too barbaric for a race such as necrons, so I figured it would also be done like the Immortal's "Living Metal"

Spoiler:

My attempt of some humour - A Blue Screen of Death!

Destroyer:

Spoiler:

Necron Lord

I bought this old metal lord from another player and I actually painted over the previous paint scheme, didn't even strip. Painted red "seriously" for the first time using MiniWarGaming Kris tutorial and I'm very happy with the result. It was also my first time doing several layers, gradually changing the colors.
The small white symbol is now my "official" dynasty symbol aswell

Spoiler:

Heavy Destroyer

Because they are Heavy Destroyers, I figured they should be shining with all the extra energy to power up the Heavy Gauss Cannon, so it was my first attempt at OSL Not a brilliant result, but the symbol and eye do look shining with energy. In short, I need more practice

Spoiler:

Objective Marker

Because no one wants just random gak to serve as those important objective markers

Spoiler:

Edit: Just trying to make the post more legible. It looked horrible

So, after painting all those Necrons I started painting some other stuff. Trying to improve my skills in other areas. The Necron Lord was a good start. Clothes! But there's a lot of stuff out there

These are some SW I painted for a good friend of mine. He's trying to start playing the game and he's one of those cases that HATES to see plastic or primed minis but hates painting himself. I decided I would help because it would be good practice for me and he could have his painted army like he wanted. So I took upon me to try and do a decent job on his SW.

This allowed me to practice on some power armor, attempt a wee bit of layering, furs, skin and even some extra free-handing.

First Space Wolves

Spoiler:

He liked him, so I got the "GO" sign to paint some more.

Spoiler:

it's taking some time, but eventually he'll get his army painted. It's taking some time as I'm painting my own Necron army at the same time... and random minis because I need to practice other stuff and I like them.

There's too much cool stuff out there that I want to paint

Cool stuff. try to put transtitions in your highlights as they are super stark, 'specialy on the legs. or is this something really old i'm confused. when did you do the sw?

Thank you very much . No, I'm trying to post the minis in the correct order I painted them. They were a bit of an experiment, I admit But yeah, you are right, those highlights are quite extreme. Thankfully my friend still liked them so we were good

So after those SW my holidays started and had much more time to really try to improve my painting. Not only that another friend of mine was going to start playing 40k with Orks! I really wanted to give him something cool looking to start his collection, so that's why I decided to paint an Ork mini that I really like:

Ork Kommando with Burna!

Spoiler:

Unfortunately, I never properly him properly because I have no idea how he's gonna base all his other Orks.

Thankfully I managed to paint some more My main army is Necrons, but I really, really like SM. One of my favorite "paint schemes" of all time is a descendant of the Dark Angels, the Guardians of the Covenant. This is the only artwork pic I ever saw of them, currently in the new Codex:

Beautiful, simply gorgeous paint scheme. The vibrant red contrasting with the metallic and black. I decided I was going to paint some of my AoBR SM to test the scheme. I decided to follow the DA lore and only the veterans get robes, but I needed to paint some of that beautiful red:

Guardians of the Covenant
Spoiler:

Let me tell ya, free-handing that chapter symbol was a pain! great practice, tho!

My final mini from that period was a tech-priest. This one was a joy to paint and practice new things. Clothing, some skin, lots of tiny details.

Tech-Priest
Spoiler:

Well, that's all for now I currently finished a unit of Heavy Destroyers and Destroyers, some old Metal Gauss Immortals and I have a WIP Necron Lord.

Soon I'm going to get more SW stuff to paint aswell not to mention Orks. Lots and lots of stuff to paint, so little time!

But what I really, really need to do ASAP:

- Get myself a Wet Pallete.

- Get a Light Box.

- Start using image editor programs to improve the quality of photos and make montages. IMHO it's way better a single pic with all the different angles than 5-6 pictures.

As always any feedback is highly appreciated! Thank you all for looking!

I do quite like the blue glowing effect you have going between the ribs of your Destroyer especially. Can we get a whole Necron army shot?

Largeblastmarker wrote:Do you highlight your metalics? they look good.

Thank you Yes, I usually wash them down with a mix of Agrax Earthshade + Nuln Oil and then highlight them back up with the respective metallic color.

Falhurk wrote:I do quite like the blue glowing effect you have going between the ribs of your Destroyer especially. Can we get a whole Necron army shot?

Thank you. I decided to add that blue effect to all my Necrons to represent the glowing energy that's powering them. When I saw those black slits they were just begging for some color.

I unfortunately don't have that much of the army painted but I would love to. I have some other minis that I need to take a pic off too!

Here it is, my painted army in all it's glory! They may be few but they are proud

(Apologies for the lack of ... proper background. The only place I can get a good shot of so many models at the same time is the kitchen).

Spoiler:

The Gauss Immortals are old metal ones. I really like the model but the true reason I have them is because they were cheap but I had to do to a little bit of "salvage". I removed the green rods (and 3 of them actually are missing the blue rods. I'm still waiting for my order to arrive) and changed their paintjob. They looked like this:

Spoiler:

I hope they feel a wee bit happier now with their shiny new paintjob

You can also see my 3 Heavy Destroyers and 2 Destroyers back there. I love Hvy Destroyers, I know they aren't the most competitive unit in the codex but I really, really like them. It's my AP2 baby . One of the destroyers has my Necron Dynasty symbol. Here it is:

Yeah, I know, looks a lot like the Inquisition or other Imperium symbols there's a reason for that. I was searching how to create a decent looking symbol that would symbolize cold and still similar to the "fluff" dynasty symbols we see in the Necron codex. Then I found out this video about a crazy thing called Dscript:

I played around with the "letters" and added the 6 stripes so it would look a bit more like the classic snowflake image:

Spoiler:

Everyone, What do you think? Should I try to change the symbol so it looks ever more like a snowflake and less like an Imperium symbol?

Moving on, this Lord is a WIP in a loooong time. Poor guy, I need to continue his paintjob. I really like how his yellow cape turned out but needs some corrections:

And finally, this is the reason I currently am not advancing on my necrons! A Njal Stormcaller I'm painting for a friend Still WIP but here's a couple shots!

As always feedback and C&C is GREATLY appreciated!

the rust color of the staff is clashing with the blue of the rest of the model. you might want to paint it a light or very dark silver metallic instead. The storm caller is really , really cool.

Oh my, that sounds like a great idea. As a bonus I'll have a Red-cloaked Lord with a gold scythe and a Yellow-cloaked Lord with a Silver scythe. Love it!

And thank you for the compliment

Dude, that Stormcaller looks amazing! Excellent paint job! Detail on the fur especially.

The symbol does look quite a lot like and Inquisitorial "I", but it's up to you really.

Also I like the deep blue in general for the colour scheme, it works nicely with the metallic necron bodies.

I like the idea with the runes. For my destroyers I was going to do something pretty cool but my time frame doesn't allow for it yet. As far as C&C goes, the only thing I think you may want to consider is the lord's face. If you paint it a bone colour and then highlight it with white it wouldn't look so stark and undefined. Although, that could be the camera too.

I like the paint job on the Stormcaller, I just don't like space wolf models lol.

Keep up the good work!

@ (since @ seems to be a blog thing to avoid quotes everywhere )Falhurk - I appreciate the idea and I may try on another miniature but I think it won't work that well. I already tried painting my Ghost Ark with some bone color
At first I was thinking of painting the "ribs" as if they were old bones from an ancient dead animal that the necrons carved into something more artistic. After it was all base colored I started to notice how I didn't like the mix of bone / Metal / Blue. Ofc this was with massive quantities of bone color, if it's only a "mask" it may work.
Only way to know for sure is if I try it out

You could also do a 50/50 bone/white base colour and highlight with white. This way, your definition shows through quite well. It all depends on how bright you want it overall but there's no way to highlight on top of stark white.

Well, I admit I took my sweet time since I was a wee bit lazy this last Thursday and Friday and yesterday it was pretty much the whole day playing 40k but Njal was completed and based today! Tell me what ye think everyone!

(P.S: My friend absolutely hates my Necrons. Constantly complains and calls them OP. Now, I love it, I feed from his hate and bitter tears, but I decided I would give him a Njal with a fitting base )

[/url]

Close up of the base:

For the next project, more Space Wolves. I'm going to try and improve 6 Grey Hunters that my friend painted but because he HATES to paint, well, the results weren't exactly the best
Spoiler:

P.S: I was going to work a bit more tonight but I just found out there's a new DLC for the Walking Dead. Nope, no can do, I have to go play more of one of the most emotional games of all time!

Someone who recently read one of my blog articles had this useful article on his blog about stripping paint off models that works on plastics as well as metal. Instead of trying to improve the Grey Wolves, try stripping them and starting again, especially if the current paint job has been applied too thickly.

Thank you very much for the tutorial. One day I'll probably need to do this, specially if it's stuff from eBay but not with these guys I'm just doing some very quick touch-ups to improve them a bit but overall I'll leave them be. I have plenty of mine to paint

Hey everyone, just a quick update!

Like I said I'm going to paint my Night Scythe now (even tho I swore I would never attempt to paint a vehicle ever again without an Airbrush) and I'll be using the "Wet Blending" technique for the first time. I thought the several plates of the Night Scythe were one good place to practice it for the first time. What do you guys think? (oh, and sorry about the background mess, it really was a couple of quick pics )

Well, that's what I get for using so many blues in my army

The Night Scythe is being a pain to paint x_x painting characters and infantry is so much fun than these massive vehicles. I'm hoping to have it done this next weekend but the base is going to be another challenge.

Ha, I was going to post this too when I saw it.

Did you get or make a wet palette yet?

I made a couple poor-mans versions from sandwich containers and 1.5 common sponges gotten from the dollar store. I cut up a bunch of 5" x5" squares from a roll of parchment paper (used for cooking, mostly baking). They seem to do the job pretty well. I don't really have a problem with paint drying anymore, but the paint does separate and sometimes becomes useless at some point. This could happen anywhere between 1 and 24 hours later, I think it all depends on the color and brand of paint it is.

Hum, interesting, I didn't know about that last part, the videos I saw about making a wet palette all say how the paint stays ok for a very long time and even if it dries a bit, they just add more water and it's ready to go again.

And no, not yet, haven't really found the "Need" but I bet once I do, I'll probably see what a utter fool I have been

But not all are "bad" news:
- Got myself a lightbox from Amazon.uk. Yes, I could have made my own thanks to the excellent tutorials, but I really, really don't have the space to have a huge box lying around without any way of keeping it out of the way. This one can be stored away in a small backpack. It's this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0064MRG64/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

- I'm almost done with the frakking Night Scythe! I hate it, I truly hate the model D: I swear I'm not painting more vehicles without an airbrush ever again, the frustration and time consumed for basing and making sure that base color is smooth and consistent all over the vehicle with a paintbrush is too much.

What's making me keep on pushing to finish said NS is thinking: "I'm going to paint my first Infinity miniature after this is done"

@HoeJarris - Thank you very much It was because I saw so many pure metallic Necrons I decided I wanted something different and created my "cold-themed" scheme. Glad you like them!

@Ratius - HISSY! It's truly a honor to have you here. Thank you very much for the compliment and I hope all goes well with your brood!

@Grimfax - Thank you The OSL was a spur of the moment thing, at first I thought about painting "normal" but I decided he needed some extra "awesome"

WELL, it took far too much time, but I hope I'm posting pictures of the Night Scythe tonight! I admit, I haven't painted the switchable weapon/portal but I desperately need to change to another model.
My hate for the NS was one big reason it took me so much time, I didn't have the patience to work on it for long periods of time.
Another was Steam Summer Sales. I'm truly addicted to XCOM: Enemy Territory

Night-Scythe!

It's finally done! Here's my Night Scythe (still in crappy white paper pictures. I went when I finally checked the lamps that I got together with my lightbox. They are for UK voltage so the plugs have 3 pins, which obviously doesn't work in here, where's it's 2 pins. Currently awaiting for the adapters ) :

No, I didn't slack, the underside is also painted

Yum, Yum, Croissant! (I added the burnt effect to show it doesn't magically fly . Same effect all my Destroyers have)

Well, that was a true pain to paint! I swear large models are almost impossible to get an even coat without an airbrush. Or you can, but the work and time wasted is far too much for the "reward" I'll attempt to avoid any large size kits for now.

Next Up, a change of scenery: Infinity!

I'm a bit scared to be honest. The model is tiny compared to the 40k ones. We'll see how it goes.

That's all for now, as always C&C is more than welcome!

Cool stuff. I especially like the way the back of the night scythe looks. Although, i will give my one favorite piece of advice; use area transition highlight to really kill the monotony of the blue surface.

@Michael BishopMa
Thank you! And yes, it may happen. Infinity has beautiful models, way too beautiful

@vent
Thank you very much for the kind words and let's hope my future Infinity work is anything good

@Largeblastmarker
Thank you mate! You are right, the completely blue surfaces are a bit monotonous. Next one I'll probably try to blend another lighter blue to make it more interesting.

So, quick update. This Infinity model is beautiful but very frustrating to work with. I kinda hate when even looking with full attention at pics, I still can't be sure if a certain area is a mold line or a small defect or if it's part of the model

But moving on, since this girl is a ninja, and a powerful one at that, I decided I wanted a base that would represent this. After some thinking and searching for inspiration, I decided upon a simple scenario but one that shows how she's awesome: She'll be jumping from lilypad to lilypad. No average human would ever be able to do this, that's why she's an amazing Ninja!

So, I got to work and let's say I'm a complete noob when it comes to GS. I read tutorials before, including how to create some plants using GS but it still was a bit tough to get good enough results. And to think it's such a a simple thing!

They still aren't perfect but I hope they are good enough for people to recognize what they are

And then tonight disaster struck. I was priming her together with 3 more models. Everything was going well, I swear I was being as careful as I could be and yet, long story short, she almost falls down from a pretty decent height but I stop it from happening. Problem is, I hit her with such brute strength I managed to rip out her sword arm and head. And the head fell down from around a 1,5meters to a concrete ramp. *sigh*: Around 15 mns later with my a** up looking at the damn floor searching for her head I found it. It really wasn't an amusing experience and as you can guess I was frustrated and mad as hell.

So, after re-gluing her head and arm AND filling new gaps with GS, here she is, ready for some paint:

I'm thinking about black clothing (just like the official one) but with purple "armor" instead of greens. Her hair will probably be another color other than white, like a light blue or pink, just for fun.

I can only pray to the God-Emperor the painting goes smoothly.

I admit, I haven't even tried it yet but I'm in love with the game The "catch" of the game is that it's always your turn. You can answer to almost everything your opponent does at the same time. I hope I'm getting a demo game next wednesday For now, I'm just in love with the miniatures

Well, I am advancing with the pink hair idea, I hope tomorrow I have something good to show

Love the Necrons, they look really good. Seeing dull grey metal all the time is boring cudos for going with something flamborant and awesome.

@Spartan-Kun: Thank you I really wanted to show how necrons can be colorful and look (at least) decent since there's so much grey metal out there

Well, she's still not finished, but I'm getting there. Here's my cyberpunk, bubble-gum hair color NINJA!

From Violet hair to soft bubblegum pink. I wanted to paint hair like this for a long time

Another thing I really wanted to play around with was with purples. I like purple a lot but it isn't part of the "regular" paint scheme of my Necrons. This girl was the perfect excuse with Yellow as a spot color.

Tomorrow night I'll continue with my painting. For now, FEAR THE NINJA!

I'm going to have to look up one of those light tents. I made one at home but it failed, so I think I'm going to go the same route as you eventually.

That is a pretty sweet bubblegum hair ninja

Will have to peruse the earlier stuff, and will be watching this space

@GrimDork: Haha, thank yo very much GD.

Well, good progress last night, the only thing missing are her eyes. Her eyes, oh man, it was so infuriating and frustrating I created this thread in search of help: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/542918.page

Thankfully the DakkaDakka community delievers like always and got myself lots of good advice about how to tackle the eyes. I hope I manage to pull it through tonight

Infinity - Oniwaban Shinobu Kitsune

Well, it's done! It's no perfect paint job but I did love painting this girl and now I'm certain I'm really a fan of Infinity miniatures, small size be damned

Unfortunately the adapters still haven't arrived *SIGH* so it's still white paper sheet time! WOOHOO!

Anyway, pictures!

I did my best to write the Japanese Kanji you see up front Unfortunately I don't know Japanese, so I had to use google translator to find out the Kanji for "Color" and "Death". I wanted to name this miniature "Colorful Death" so I hope it's close enough

And since this is a blog about improvement, I'm going to start writing a small report about how I tried to improve and what did I do or what I'm going to do different from now on. I'm spoilering it in case you aren't interested in my self-evaluation

Spoiler:
Good stuff:
- First, this miniature is completely different from my usual 40k ones so I had the perfect excuse to go "wild" when it comes to colors. I'm really glad I did, I loved working with purples and pinks and violets.
- I managed to practice a lot of layering. Her face, the hair, the sword. It isn't perfect, but slowly getting better with more practice.
- Glazing over metals is fun
- Greenstuff. For the first since my Deathmark with an eyepatch and cigar I sculpted something out of GS and I managed to create my own base. It isn't anything "DAAYYUUM", but I'm very happy with the end result. It tells me I really must keep on trying to improve my GS skills as well as my painting skills.

What can I do better next time?
- Eyes. Urgh. I left the eyes for the very end I really regret it. One slip and I would ruin either her hair or face so I was extremely nervous when it was time to paint her eyes. I fiddled with it for a very long time and I still am not 100% happy with them. I am using the advice of the wonderful Dakka people next time and specially the one about doing the eyes first: http://www.reapermini.com/Thecraft/12
- BEING MORE CAREFUL. I dropped this wonderful mini around 4 times. I swear I was being careful and yet it fell down around 4 times... man, was it enfuriating. Her head and sword arm were damaged from this so yeah, cursed be my clumsiness.
- Keep on trying to improve my blending / layering skills. There's an enormous room for improvement

Well, next up I'm going to paint a small commission for a friend. I'm painting the miniatures from the WoW Adventure Board Game and I have the first 4 right here:

The quality isn't so good, I'm afraid. Horrible, just awful mold lines. I have to chop away these mold lines from hell. Not only that, look at this poor Orc:

Nevermind his axe is bending, look at that face! It's melting D:

That's all folks! As always, C&C is appreciated!

TDL's Painting Den - 15/04/2014 - FW's SW VenDread complete!  @ 2013/07/31 22:43:00

Melted face? Definitely a warlock around! Good to see even plastic WoW orcs still have too-big shoulder pads.

Nice work on the ninja! I really like the overall effect, especially the little ripple on the water from the lily pad she's on.

Good luck with the WoW boardgame bits, I'm sure you'll turn them into something usable

Thank you! The ripple was something I wanted from the very beginning, ever since I had the lilypad idea. I'm glad people are able to notice and recognize it

And thank you for the support, I removed all I was able to but I had to go take a video game break. I deserved it, damn it

I dig your ninja!

Hope you continue to buy and paint more of those little suckers.

I really enjoyed the spoilered 'looking back' section.

For the WoW orc mini I would use this as an opportunity to try and paint an actual burn scar. Some gnarly burned flesh like The Hound from A Game of Thrones or something.

Video game breaks are good. So are tv breaks. Back when I used to have unreasonably large amounts of hobby time (high school and parts of college mostly) I used to punctuate painting/hobby time with half hour breaks of either. Now its more like some days I'm too tired to paint so I shoot aliens or what have you

Hrm, the tauren having a dagger/sword and the human having a large primitive hammer seems like a role reversal, but I'm sure you'll find a way to make them look good if your previous work is any indication

Maybe you should have washed the hair with a redish wash so that the crevasses of the hair would be shaded? I like this "looking back section". Everyone should do it.

@GrimDork: Hehe, actually I plan on trying to follow the game's colors. I clearly remember carrying that thing around back then when I played WoW.

@Largeblastmarker: Oh man, I did that because I thought I *could* improve the look of the hair and I immediately regretted it. My beautiful layered pink hair turned into "something" I really hated D: I had to paint it all over again. It proved that sometimes "Less is more".

Slow progress is slow! This weekend I spent some hours doing what I bet most war-gamers love: Cleaning up My room / hobby corner was getting far too cluttered and messy. There was nearly no room for anything, so after some hard-work it's now in a much better shape. Ofc I gave myself a nice back-pain that prevented me from painting too much

But progress was made nonetheless!

These minis were supposed to be "speed-painted". I accepted to paint them with the idea of training "speed-painting" since my friend would be satisfied with a very quick paint-job. It's... hard. I can't just skip over details as I should. I didn't use any blending or layering with multiple layers, just base, wash and 1-2 layers.
Still, I did my best to paint every nook and cranny and find some way to make some details pop-out like his belt buckle, his beard, all that.

The Orc was very WIP when I took this shot:

This is another example. I could have left the boots like that. I could have painted the whole cloak in brown or red and be done with it. I just, urgh, it's hard. My OCD kicks in and I have to make sure I paint all the details I can. I hope the Orc is complete tomorrow night!

Another good thing is that I finally beat up my laziness and now I'm using Photoscape to Scale, Crop and Combine pictures so I reduce the amount of uploaded pics and make it easier to post and browse

Well, that's all for now!

Orc complete as promised. Hurray for being able to meet deadlines!

Yeah, this is speed-painting for me: 2 nights of labor This model really grew on me: I enjoyed painting him, he has an obscene amount of details but funny enough the axe is far too flat. It's just a piece of metal with no details. I decided to try and create some runes of some sort to spice it up a bit, all jagged and sharp looking, ya know, Orcs!

(My original plan was to paint the Horde symbol but after a few attempts, gak, change of plans!)

Troll is currently WIP. This guy is being much easier and faster but I'm done for today: It's Ar Tonelico time!

Haven't heard of that one, but there are plenty of JRPGs that have slipped through my grasp over the years.

Orc is kicking ass there TDL! I think the face looks just fine after you got your hands on it. I like the extra effort you put in, it shows! The troll is blocked in with good base colors for a troll, making me nostalgic! Can't wait to see more but I can understand the video game break, think I may go have one myself

Ar Tonelico is being one of a kind game. In the game's universe, Songs are very important and powerful, they are "Magic", hence the Soundtrack of the 3 games is magical. Eck, the "main objective" of the 2nd game is discovering the Song of Metafalica, a Song that allows you to create new land. A new continent, really

And thanks for the compliment I'm glad I'm able to provoke a nostalgia attack because the same happened to me

You can provoke all the nostalgia you want, as long as one doesn't dwell on it or try to recapture lost glories, it can be healthy

As long as it doesn't get me to play wow again, meh time sink

Game sounds neat, may have to add it to my backlog, but its a pretty long list

Oh, I know the feeling Unfortunately (or thankfully) it all went downhill for me since WotLK. Burning Crusade was a spectacular expansion and had lots of fun with friends. WotLK was so, meh.

Good to know there are other people with gigantic backlogs. Me, I blame Steam Sales. Every time there's a sale, my wallet gets raped. I have a huge backlog here and lots of older games I wish to play. And loving to paint minis isn't helping either

By the way, here's one of my favorite musics from Ar Tonelico. A shorter version is used for the game openings. I think all 3 of them have an almost exact version of this song. Suffice to say, I may boot the game over 100 times until I see the end, 95% of those times I'm going to watch the opening.

Progress: Troll shaded, gonna work on some highlights and I'm done for today. Hopefully tomorrow I finish him

Steam sales kill me too. I was good this year, I only got two games, and I'm something like 70-80% done with the second one

Still have a couple dozen laying around from last year though!

That song is pretty, and interesting. It isn't quite my style but it makes the game sound pretty interesting.

*whip crack* now get to work on those highlights

@Largeblastmarker Thank you! Always nice to see you dropping by!

@Pacific Thank you! Glad you enjoyed my crazy colors for a Ninja, I really wanted something a wee bit different

@BlessMyBeard (ah! awesome name!) Ah, thank you! I did try to make it as WoW as possible. Thanks to my many hours of gaming in Azeroth and the character cards, I had a good base to decided my colours . Thanks for all compliments, and like I said at GrimDork's blog, I too want to see your commission!

I want to thanks everyone who ever "lurked" here or replied. It really helps to keep our motivation going when we see other people enjoying it as always C&C is welcome!

Moving on, about my Wow "commission": Concerning the lack of updates, as I posted in GrimDork's blog (shameless advertising! ), life threw me one heck of a curveball and I spent around 30-ish hours of the weekend in work-mode and as you can guess, this event shot down my painting deadlines with extreme prejudice. I said to my friend (the client) I would have the Tauren finished by... today.... and "today" ended 2 hours ago. Thankfully he worked at the same place I currently work, so I'm sure he'll understand, but still, it got me a bit bummed I didn't manage to keep with my promise.

Anyway, here's the fully painted Troll Rogue! I decided I wanted to highlight black with something other than gray. Thanks to Kris from MiniWarGaming I discovered how beautiful the "Incubi Darkness" together with Sotek Green is. I think I exaggerated a bit down there, but in "real life" it isn't such a shocking contrast as you see in the pic! The green glaze is to add an extra touch to the blades by simulating poison

And finally, here's the Tauren Hunter WIP:

That's all folks! Now I gotta go because I wake up in 5 hours for more work I should have gone straight to bed but I really wanted to post an update.

A vision of troll loveliness! I think your friend can surely accept a little delay for the obvious increase in quality over the initial request.

Bummer about the worktastrophie, got a mini one myself. Definitely puts your schedule off!

You've just got a wee lil tauren and you're in the clear. Are these lovingly painted minis going to get some basing or was that not part of the commission?

Good luck at work, working tired sucks!

These are the first 4 of 12 Once the Tauren is finished I'll probably have a small break to start painting an Ork Big Mek for a friend.

Curses, I don't know when I'll be able to continue with my own But no worries, I love painting, even if they aren't mine.

My friend didn't ask for bases, so I'll just fix them by painting black. If he regrets his decision I'll be happy to later on base them properly.

I truly hope today is a bit more "normal" and I'll be able to continue with the Tauren, lack of sleep be damned

So, very small update! After finally sleeping a very decent amount of hours and having a gaming day, I managed to finish the Tauren Hunter. After taking this picture I noticed the small black dots on his hoof. This has been corrected and varnish has been applied to all 4 miniatures:

All together now:

Not my best photography work but I admit I was completely fed up with the Tauren. It was a very frustrating miniature to paint and yet I can't explain why it was so tough to paint it.

So, what did I learn?
Spoiler:
- I'm absolutely horrid when it comes to speed-paint. My original idea for this commission was speed-painting the miniatures and be done with it. Unfortunately, I learnt how my OCD kicks in, hard, and prevents me from leaving any precious detail badly painted. So, what do do? Keep on practicing and eventually I hope I'll be able to paint faster but still leaving no detail behind! All minis deserve some effort into them, no exceptions.
- I managed to experiment with very different painting schemes from the usual 40k stuff, so thanks to that, I now have some more color combinations I know I like.
- That next time I'm asking for "clean-up" payment. I still resent the amount of work spent to prepare these miniatures.

And for the next fully painted miniature, I'm going to use my light box. The converters have arrived, all that prevented me from trying it out was a HUGE amount of laziness. That's what I get for sleeping 26 hours in 2 days

So, for my next work I'm going to paint an Ork Big Mek for a friend, BUT, this is going to suffer a small delay. This is why:

It's time for my Guardians of the Covenant to get some reinforcements! I'm going to assemble the bikes and the leftover Tactical Space Marines and Librarian from my Dark Vengeance! I'm going to a "Combat Patrol" tournament this next saturday and I feel it's the perfect opportunity to try out my GotC for the first time.

(And I'm seriously considering jumping on the bandwagon with the new C:SM release. Everything looks AMAZING).

So, that's all folks! Thanks for looking and until next time!

Hey everyone, just a very quick update. Last night and today were very relaxing Saw the entire Avatar: The Legend of Korra and started watching Batman Beyond at the same time as I clipped. cleaned and assembled my GotC force. It's done, and even though I'm not taking with me tomorrow the bikes, terminators and company master, I decided to also take care of them.

So. here's my "strike force"

I'm taking 25 Tactical Marines (with plenty of cool stuff) and as the HQ, a Librarian (Mastery Level 1) equipped with the Lion's Roar weapon. 500 points, the tournament's point value.

Tonight I'll probably just keep watching Batman and cleaning up mold lines and other defects from my Tactical marines I have plenty from 2 boxes of AoBR.

And Largeblastmarker, I appreciate your tip. but my terminators are not going to be bone colored Since they'll belong to the GotC, they are going to be painted with metallic grey, black and red!

Well, my Guardians of the Covenant fought and died bravely

First Round: Ouch, didn't even score, those cursed demons ate my patrol force for lunch.
Second Round: Silver Tide, I lost but my GotC fought 'till the end, the Librarian died surrounded by Necron corpses, like a true hero!
Third Round: Won this one, but nothing that cool happened, besides the plasma getting hot 4/6 times

It was fun, since I only used Necrons until today I'm really not used to armies with lots of customisation and different statistics inside a squad. It was good practice.

In conclusion, play time is over. I did promise I would paint my friend's Big Mek so that's what I'm gonna focus from now on until I receive more WoW miniatures.

Meh losing is fine as long as you had fun. I, too, must return to my work!

A big mek you say? Is it to be a known work color scheme or is it something else (or even better, at your discretion)?

Progress is slowly being made! Slowly because I have been switching around colors so many freakin' times until I find that perfect balance that makes me say "I like it!"

Now, some explanations about what's going on:
- Since the "Kult of Speed" is a mix of Orks of all klans that decided to "GO FASTAH!!", this Big Mek is going to be originally from the Goffs Klan, hence the black plates of metal and dark pants. I'm going to add the usual checkered Goff pattern to the plates of metal.
- I find that I hate lots of darkish metal (Leadbelcher) together with red, that's why there's lots of other colored metals, I find they contrast better.
- The brown metal bits and orb are just the base for yellow. Those areas are screaming for a vibrant energy yellow.
- The violet colored shirt. Well, this is actually a client's request. My friend wanted his shirt to be violet / pink, so it's the only thing I can't mess around. I came up with a fluff reason to explain it : This Ork Big Mek was extremely superstitious and although he was Goff, he had a blue shirt because "Blu iz da lukiest colah." Once he joined the Kult of Speed, he dyed a lot of stuff red, including his shirt, but instead of turning red, it mixed with the blue, AND BAM, violet Ork. Now he's radiant his shirt his both Lucky AND FASTAH!

Do you have any advice about what ye see so far? I was planning to paint the Orbs a bring blue, but I think it will contrast too much, and not in a good way. I think I'm going to basecoat them brown and paint them yellow just like the other bits I was planning to, I think it will look better.

I will probably try to do some weathering for the first time, we'll see how that turns out.

Well, I'm done for today, tomorrow is another day for more Big Mek shenanigans!

God-Emprah help me, this miniature is brutal! BRUTAL! Here's the current status of the Big Mek:

This guy has so many different details, so much "stuff!" going on, it's being one heck of a job painting him!

Yesterday I did a quick count, I think I already used 23-24 different paints so far (And for those wondering: Yes, I painted every single individual wire. I'm that crazy when it comes to details)

The base coating process is nearly complete: There are some hidden details like his cog medallion and chain attached to his belt, or a "vent", or the gretchins but it's nearly done. Then it will be fun, fun highlighting time!

... I started painting this guy to take a short break from the Big Mek so I could restore a bit of my sanity. It felt good painting a relatively easy miniature with an easier paint scheme

That's all folks!

Orks believe that purple is a sneaky color, actually. for the little crevasses on the big mek, i think thinned washes will be your friend!

And I think you are right The gun has a lot of small crevasses I can't reach with my brushes, so that's what I'm most likely to do to add some color there.

The wires look great. Looks like something I would have just dry brushed and been done with, and I can appreciate how much nicer its gonna look. All of the extra colors popping out will make this mini shine when you're done.

I like the marine, black and silver are a good contrast and should look good on the table.

Keep it up!

Hey kids, I want to play a game! It's called "Spot the Differences"

I can't believe it took me another couple of hours to base everything that was missing. I honestly have no idea how time flew that fast but I'm loving how it's starting to look like. I like my Orks colorful!

Quick tip that finally got into my thick skull: Always use a medium to thin out your metallic paints. I was avoiding thinning them because they then look like crap, but I completely forgot about the mediums it's smooth-city with them and they keep their consistency!

In other news:

Oooohh yeah, 4 fantasy babes for me to paint the one I'm most excited about is the Night Elf. Not only am I a NE fan, the idea of painting NE skin, hair and facial marks, ooohh boy, it's gonna be a challenge alright

Heya everyone! I have been silent but it's because I have been on a painting frenzy of my own. First off, let's start with the current status of our familiar Big Mek!

Yep, that's right, I'm finally painting the highlights and details. I absolutely love how his skin turned out: I think all it's missing it's a green glaze to seal the deal. It was hell to basecoat him but now that I'm at the fun part .

But the Big Mek isn't the big priority! After all, I'm painting him for free and fun for a friend and since last friday I got the new batch of WoW miniatures, these are the ones I'm trying to pump out ASAP. So, out of the 4 girls, 2 are done!

Orc Shaman:

Human Warlock:

And a Troll WIP:

Now, the human warlock was HELLISH, all because of how tiny she is. Figuring out her details was a struggle. How tiny is she? Look for yourselves!

I forgot to take a picture together with the Infinity one but even her towers over the warlock, and considering we are talking about "true 28mm", I think that says a lot.

But what's this? Moar SPEESH MAREENS? Why, yes, glad you ask! While shading the Big Mek, I created a mix between Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil. Unfortunately, I was an idiot. Instead of mixing it in an empty pot, I just spilled it on my wet palette.
After I saw how much paint was going to be wasted, I grabbed a good ammount of space marines and started base coating them like mad so I could shade them. It worked! And now I'm painting them to relax from the WoW minis and Big Mek:

The Guardians of the Covenant:

And without any doubt, this is my favorite one. I'm going to take my sweet time with him and I'll have to create a cool name for him. For now, he shall be known as:
Bob, the Mighty Beakie of Doom!

That's all for now folks, C&S is always welcome and I shall leave you now with one of the musics that got me into a painting frenzy. I have no idea why or how, but this music among others, together with documentaries of Carthage, Rome, Greece (Hyping myself for Total War: Rome 2) was what got me completely zen to just paint away and feel no sleepiness. Enjoy the Lyrics

My is that poppy! Lot of energy I may take a page from your book and swap in some techno/dub step/game music to give my Pandora Kamelot station a break

That's just a lot of work you got done! 2/4 lovely ladies is much speedier than your prior wow work, keep it up!

Mek is coming along nicely, and that's a good chunk of based and shaded marines too!

Damn! Now I've gotta get some more work done!

Did anyone else groan inwardly at memories of running wailing caverns when they saw that staff? I sure did! Good times, good times.

Hey everyone, quick update, Troll Priest is done!

She took longer than I thought. My bad, she has so many juicy details and is such a pretty model, I had to pimp her out the max I could, as fast as I could. Oh, and basing all those different colors sure takes it's sweet time . Her card image has this strange purple / green combo so I decided to attempt a quick blend on her cloak. I don't think it turned out too bad, especially considering how fast it was.

I left the best for last:

A Night Elf Warrior. I really like this miniature, but I have NO idea how to paint her. I want to paint her leather with a slight purple tone and I still have no clue what colors to use to paint her skin. It will be a new painting challenge so I'm pretty happy but right now I'm like this:
Spoiler:

and with that, it's off for today! C&C are always welcome!

TDL's Painting Den - 15/04/2014 - FW's SW VenDread complete!  @ 2013/08/28 02:08:00

Post by: GrimDork

I think one of the more iconic night elf combos is a pale purple or blue skintone with a medium-dark purple or blue for the hair. Something like lavender (or a touch lighter even) for the skin, and then midnight blue for the hair.

It may clash with your purple boots though... I think normal leather may complement the typical night elf colors, but I know they can wear purple too. Maybe keep the right boot as it is in essence, and do the light blue or purple skintone. They do green/dark green for hair as well (i think..)

I dunno, I was usually too busy trying to kill them and cursing their occasionally OP shadowmeld racial trait, so I'm not exactly the best person to give color advice

Nice work on the troll, keep 'em comin!

Yeah, I was trying to create a leather with a slight purple tint, but the result is more of a "wine" color. I don't like it much either. I'm more inclined to paint the usual brown leather I have been so far.

The skin color, argh, I really don't know, but I'm considering the pale purple skin / dark blue hair combo and a light green cloak as her card shows.

Ah well, I'm sure I'll unblock tonight! I want this girl done by next Friday so I can hopefully start the new batch next weekend

particularly like the model.

Thanks for the kind words you two! Sorry it's been so long without an update, but last week wrecked me completely. Saturday's evening and Sunday were two perfect opportunities to paint, but all I could was just sit like a vegetal in front of the monitor surfing and discovering new Touhou music

New week, new "life", and off we go! Night Elf complete!

I absolutely love painting hair. The crazier the better. Pink, Neon Blue, I can't wait to paint more original looking hair!

I already got the next batch of WoW minis and then some more, but for now I'm focusing on the Big Mek. I really want to complete him before I start painting WoW minis again. I won't bother you with a pic for now since not much has changed.

That's all for now! Again, sorry for the lack of updates and just because I can, here's something I discovered this weekend that I absolutely love:

Oh, you just now discovered the bad apple thingie? I found that a couple+ years ago and watch it a couple times a year just 'cause its cool. Have you seen the one where the guy took the stills and stop-motioned the whole thing? pretty slick.

The NE warrior is great. I love the hair, and the glow for the eyes. I think going back to basic leather was a good move. The tattoos on her face are spiffy too! The face in general just seems darn nice.

If you want the vocaloid/j-pop thing to listen to, try youtubing project diva, it seems like its a japanese game similar to dance dance revolution, but I think you just use the controller. Anyhow, its all fairly fast paced (finding it good to churn out models when i"m getting tired).

@GrimDork - Oh yes, only now I discovered the Bad Apple clip! After discovering Touhou music I have been in a frenzy listening and learning more about this wonderful universe that spawned so much fan made stuff. There's even two (!) Castlevania like games! And after watching some gameplay of "Touhouvania 2" I can say it looks as nice as the one I have for my DS with awesome art (gothic style, just like Castlevania) and it's voiced! And it's free!

Thanks for the kind words I really enjoyed painting this one. I was really feeling down when I started but painting seems to always cheer me up.

I will have to see that Project Diva. I've been mostly listening to the hundreds (!) of Touhou mixes, remixes, OSTs but more music is always great

@Largeblastmarker - Haha, thank you! I really like her too! But I'm a NE fanboy so I'm not really impartial!

Big Mek next, so that should satiate some of your 40k hunger

Ahoy there! It's been far too long Last week was a strange one. Every single day after I arrived home from work in a complete depressed state. Really, really bogged down my Big Mek progress!

But thankfully, here he is:

What's this? I think an Imperial Guardsman wasn't using Imperium certified underwear:
Spoiler:

Overall, it's one fantastic miniature. It has so many details, so much going on, I feel it can be a bit overwhelming. And yes, that Space Marine helmet has the same paint scheme as my Guardians of the Covenant. A small easter egg :3

Right, so, what I think after all this work:

The Good:
Spoiler:
- More layering practice! I feel the Red and Greens have improved since my previous attempts.
- Free-hand: Any chance I get to practice some free-hand is always fantastic and orks are an excellent excuse!
- I discovered I prefer highlighting black with incubi darkness + turquoise a LOT more than any gray.
- Texture Paints: I didn't give them much credit, but I feel they really helped pimping out the Ork's base.
- Satin Varnish is fantastic to give that "Sweaty" skin look. Hey, I feel that a big mek carrying a Shokk Attack Gun all day long is probably pretty sweaty. And now that I think about it, I should have tried adding sweat stains under his arm xD

The Bad:
Spoiler:
- The yellow. Oh man, the yellows D: They were some serious work, layering, and layering and layering some more and still, I failed to achieve a look I was truly satisfied with. Yellows, need to improve those.
- White. White, my eternal enemy. Try as I might, it never seems to come out perfect. Another one I need to improve.
- The big mek as a single tiny bit of battle damage on his belt, and even that bit hurted me. I really dislike the battle damage look but it's such a hit with so many people, I feel I have to sacrifice some miniatures and attempt to improve my skills.

So, from tomorrow on I'm going to paint the last of the WoW miniatures and a Coteaz. The Coteaz is going to be another "Do my best to improve my skills!" miniature and it's also for a friend.

So, that's all folks!

@Largeblastmarker: What about adding some Imperial Fists to your Ultramarines company?

@GrimDork: Then you shall wait no more . Oh, and I finally got to watch the Bad Apple's Stop Motion. It was mind blowing cool.

@Igice: Ah, it was a true PITA, but it was worth it in the end. Thank you

I'm pleased to announce 3 out of 4 WoW miniatures are complete. I have yet 4 more to complete after these guys, but that's for another day:

Let's get this show on the road!

Gnome Mage

I hated Gnomes with a passion back when I played WoW, didn't matter if I played Horde or Alliance. Thankfully, I enjoyed painting this guy. Never, ever before have I used so much Moot Green in one go, the little guy looks like he's glowing!
You have no idea how much I had to resist from painting his hair and beard Pink!

Undead Mage

Yet another mage. This one is probably the one with the biggest difference when compared to the respective card. I couldn't give her blonde hair, in my mind's eye it would look far too strange together with her greenish skin and red robes. I opted for black hair and a drybrush of Incubi Darkness and Sotek Green (turquoise).
I did consider painting her robe's patterns in yellow, but in the end I though this was a perfect example of "Less is More".

Dwarf Hunter

Nothing says "Stealth" as bright orange hair!
I really enjoyed painting this guy (who wouldn't? Dwarves are awesome) and when he was painted inside a FLGS that was having the pre-release of the newest magic expansion, that's saying a lot.
Me and another guy were painting in a corner, cursing the 50+ Magic players that were contributing to the giant heat inside the store. Nothing against Magic players, we just didn't want them to exist at that time. Still, the store probably made some good profit with so many players, so they shall live for now.

This next pic shows the scale of the different miniatures. The Dwarf looks tiny when compared to the Gnome!

As a bonus, I played Zombiecide together with some friends this Saturday's night and as I played I painted 2 zombies. 38 more to go . (Not counting the special ones! Fast Zombies, Fatties and an Abomination!)
I think I will keep painting zombies each time we play: I think the board will look great when filled with painted zombies instead of a plastic gray horde. I hope to take a pic once such an epic feat is complete.

The following post has nothing to do with painting. It's only about the "Anime Convention" (Anifest) I visited yesterday, so feel free to skip if this isn't your cup of tea.

So, yeah, after playing a bit in the Magic's pre-release, lunch with a friend, painting all afternoon, playing Zombiecide (and painting) till around 4am, I was a complete wreck the next day. It didn't help when I discovered the Con was this weekend, not on the 28th and 29th of September as I thought (I could have bet my life on it, I swear! ). I grabbed my stuff and rushed to the place.

The following picture is from a fellow Wargamer with at least 3 of the most beautiful and fluffiest armies I ever saw: Sisters of Battle, Vostroyan and Vraskian Traitors. I unfortunately missed his Cosplay presentation but I met him afterwards:

PYRAMID HEAD! Because it's fantastic, that's why! He did a great job considering his outfit was a bit rushed. (Oh, and enjoy the shot of the Lolipop Chainsaw girl as well )

There were a lot of great costumes there, no doubt about it, but there was only one that made me ask the girl to pose:

Remilia Scarlet <3.

She looks damn good and I was really happy to see a cosplay of one of my 3 favorite Touhou characters. Now, if only I could see a Flandre or a Cirno next time

Lastly, there were some kick-ass artists there who were taking requests for a small fee. Considering they only had around 20 mns for each drawing, the results are amazing. I couldn't resist and asked for a Cirno and a Flandre drawing.

Here's the proud artist together with her drawings. I took a pic of her with such a funny looking face, I can't resist using it :

So, yeah, it was a great and tiring weekend and if you read all this you are a hero. Here's one last shot to end with a bang:

Have fun everyone!

@Igice - It was pretty fun and I'm glad you visit some as well Keep that geek spirit!

@Largeblastmarker - OI! That's my line when threatening GrimDork, damn it! ... *grumble*, I will, but only tomorrow

So yeah, I *WAS* going to start the NE Druid, the last WoW miniature but long story short, a friend returned recently from Japan and tonight we met up and talked about his life, experiences and the paradise on Earth that Japan seems to be.

To make this even shorter, he brought some goodies, one very cool lookin' Evangelion book filled with short stories unrelated to the main plot and a Rei figurine.

So, yeah, ever since I saw that god-like show that was Neon Genesis Evangelion (so many, many years ago) I have been a fan of this fantastic char that's Ayanami Rei. I *MAY* be entering an area that *MAY* be considered creepy. I bet I can scare a lot of good people if I add candles or an altar to the following scene. It would be an interesting experience but I better not

(*SPOILERED* for massive impact once you open it )

Spoiler:

I swear to the God-Emperor I don't own any body-pillow or anything like that! Don't look at me like that, damn it!

So yeah, no painting updates for today! Tomorrow I'll hopefully start the NE Druid!

Alright got that out of my system

I have many <3's for Evangellion, but I've never been able to reckon the anime/manga aesthetic of 13-14 year old children with super model figures (that also do jobs adults should probably be doing, at that). That said, neat collection, cool show, remember no candles!

Japan is pretty cool. There's a lot of scenic countryside to be seen, and shrines and stuff. And Tokyo was crazy big (of course I haven't been to the middle of another proper city, anything I've had to do with Chicago has been on the outskirts so yeah), with city as far as you could see (even from the tower). The only souvenirs I managed to come back with were pictures and a Duel-Maid action figure thing (it was Japan, I had to get some kind of quirky anime toy).

And now, I second LBM's *whipcrack*!

Considering your reaction with such innocent figurines, I really better not After all, there's a lot of Rei figurines I saw over the years there were very... interesting, yes, let's go with interesting, it's a good adjective and sometimes they were interesting together with Asuka.

Glad to know you enjoyed Japan, I'm hoping to go there one day. Ofc I will have to restrain myself, because I think there's no way I could resist many of those beautiful collectibles.

And you have no reasons to use that whip! Where are those finished zombies, uh, uh?

Edit: Damn it, he did post those zombies right after posting here. Curse you, GrimDork!

Whuh? Look thee to mine blog goodsir! There be the zombies of which thee speakest! Verily there are zombies, and soon to be five more, the last five at that!

And I was just being funny about the figures, those are all pg and tame, I can only imagine what the deeper bowels of google would assault me with should I search for Rei and Asuka

Really, we didn't get to do a whole lot of shopping, or I probably would have had more junk to bring home I got some stuff for other people, I just didn't keep a lot (besides it was rough lugging around what suitcases I had!).

Please do Igice, It's one heck of a show that'll probably will leave you scratching your head thinking "what the hell just happened?"

I honestly don't know if you should just watch the new movies, the Rebirh of the Evangelion. According to friends, who love Evangelion as I do, the movies are spectacular. The first 2 movies are the entire anime. They removed some of the more, er, irrelevant angels and the end is somewhat different.
The third movie is when things get new. I'm hoping to watch all of them this next weekend I have always been afraid of watching them thinking I would be completely disappointed, but I have recently heard too many positive opinions to ignore them any further.

Anyway, concerning our familiar Wow miniatures, NE Dr00d is done!

Lots of greens and browns to represent good ol' Mother Nature! ... She's a scary b*tch

Done and done, I don't want to see more WoW miniatures for a long time, I rea- *looks at the extra 4 WoW board game miniatures another friend asked him to paint* - well... frak.

There'll be no updates for a while: they are the same as some of the already painted previously: Orc Warrior, Undead Mage, Human Warlock, Dwarf Hunter, and they are probably going to be painted in the same way, or close. So yeah, a bit boring

Until next time!

WOOT! They are only missing some final touch-ups and base clean-up + matt varnish but they are pretty much done:

Spoiler:

I think some of them look better than the ones from my first attempt.

Now I am going to take a small break from painting WoW miniatures. As I briefly mentioned previously (unless I dreamt it), I'm probably going to sell most of my Necrons so I can start Space Marines. I really wanted to avoid an army that sells more than the entire Fantasy range, but I am and always have been an Imperium of Man fanboy and this new codex, oh boy, I'm loving it far too much.
I'm going to use these next days to search the interwebs for potential prices and finally watch the Evangelion movies and plenty of new cool videos at miniwargaming. Lots of new painting videos I still haven't seen!

Until a next time

Haha, no, no, no touching herself, I don't collect that kind of anime figurines She's just being Rei. She's from Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime first aired on 1995. I still think it's one of the best.

Well, don't be sad mate, there's a lot more of awesome zombie robots IN SPAAAACE here in dakkadakka. Here, this blog has absolutely amazing ones. The big reason I stopped is because I have been painting all kinds of stuff and I really want to move on to Space Marines. As I said previously, I have been an Imperium of Man fanboy ever since I first heard what a Space Marine was and I don't want to resist it any longer

Anyway, a small announcement: The "hobby" side of my life has taken a big hit because something else has been keeping me very busy. No, thankfully it's not work, it's something I absolutely enjoy. I'm finally learning Japanese. Saturday was my first lesson and wow, this is an absolutely hardcore language and I LOVE IT. Hours of my free time have been consumed with me writing hiragana symbols over and over again.
In short, I'm hoping to keep on "hobbying" but at a slower pace.

Until a next time

Ahoy, mateys! Long time no post!

So, I have been slacking off a lot thanks to other hobbies (those darn videogames, and anime and japanese studies ) and an enormous laziness when it comes to pick up a camera and photograph my progress but I managed to beat said laziness yesterday. So, what's new in the hobby world?

I'm currently tackling with a Space Wolves commission that's going to keep me busy for a long while. Besides this, I'll probably create another blog to document my eventual Infinity army painting.

So, on the top of my head I remember I have the following SW to paint:
- 20-ish Gray Hunters
- 10 Blood Claws
- 5 Long Fangs
- 1 FW Venerable Dreadnought
- 1 Rhino
- 1 Drop pod
- 6 Thunder wolf Cavalry

This is what I can recall. I'm sure I'm missing something but I think it's good enough to show how I'm going to be busy for a while. So, without further delay:

Fenrisian Wolves

To spice things up, I decided I would paint half the wolves as Timber Wolves and the other half as Gray Wolves. I figured it would look more colorful and eye-catching on the tabletop.

Details:

Since they were Timber Wolves, I figured it was the perfect excuse to attempt to add some remains of trees for the first time. Surely there's a lot of blown up bits of trees in the middle of a battle with lots of bolter rounds flying around. I like it, it breaks the white and gray just fine

Details:

No trees for the gray wolves, the poor guys come from a much colder region of Fenris only snow, rocks and ice.

The pack, it hungers!

Wolf Guard Terminators - Old School

I wasn't the one painting these guys. They have their original paintjob, which means it's around 20 years old and personally I think it looks damn good. No, what I did was replacing their bases: The bases were old school ones, 25mm, instead of the current Terminator sized ones, 40mm. Not only that, they were the same style everyone used back then, the horrible, just GOD-EMPEROR AWFUL green bases. They looked good, but they look even better with a proper base:

Njal was the only miniature I previously fully painted for this army, do you think he can look forward to what's coming?

That's all for now! Thank you all for looking, C&C is always welcome and happy hobbying!

@Lukarikx - Thank you. Now go work on some more Gundams!

@LBM - Your wish is my command *bows*

Fine, he isn't exactly painted, but it's a nice action shot of "grandpa" and his "kids". They were primed with GW's new spray "The Fang" and I'm quite happy: not owning an airbrush, this spray really saved me some time. I need to paint with the brush several areas I missed with the spray, but it should be much easier and faster than if they were primed black. I bet it's gonna help me a lot with the Rhino too.

Spot the Wulfen, I think I made him "berserky" enough But no more hobby for today, gotta study Japanese. Hopefully, I'll start painting the dread tomorrow night.

Happy Hobbying everyone!

Well, it's Saturday, time to post some progress! I have been taking my time and attempting to do my best with the VenDread. This week I did my best with the Banner.

It's an absolutely gorgeous model but I need to completely focused when painting... no distractions and take it real slow, or I would ruin something previously complete. In short, it was very tiring to work for a long ammount of time.

I *TRIED* to free-hand the center, but the final result was horrible and I got disheartened by it. I covered it up again with the base blue to erase it and I'm gonna leave it alone for now. Next week I start painting the body!

Happy Hobbying!

Looks pretty good! I agree that freehanding the middle of banners is terrible and frightening. I did one back in my days of WHFB that, while it doesn't look great, was OK enough for me to be happy with it. Now, I think, I'm too critical of myself to try it again

It's a very big banner and looks very wolfy. The bone, especially, looks top notch

@LBM - Thank you! I hope the final result will meet your expectations

So, yeah, this week I'll start painting VenDread's body. I'll again try to do my best and post an update next Saturday!

So, TDL, where are our sweet and delicious updates? Well, life is funny sometimes.

<--------------- look at the flag, instead of the usual Portuguese one, you should see a Denmark one.

So, last Thursday I was notified I was going to Denmark on work starting next Tuesday, so, yeah, as you can guess, I wasn't feeling that inspired to continue with the VenDread. So, if all goes well, I'll keep flying to Denmark weekly on work until March. Ofc, this may all change and I can return permanently next week, who knows, nothing is certain.

So, yeah, there probably won't be any update this next week as well, but I hope to get used to the rhythm and work well enough so I can start bringing with me some painting stuff and give you some updates the following week.

Until then, folks

Holy crap, one month already since my last significant update? Work is being a hobby killer!

Well, as I have mentioned previously, I'm now flying weekly to Denmark on work and as such, I can't paint as much as I really wanted, BUT, I started doing just that this week. I was really missing some painting action so I have some juicy VenDread updates! ... ok, not so good, but I did what I could

Apologies for the lack of quality: All I have is my iPad camera to take and upload some photos so, yeah, not the best quality of the world.

So yeah, as you can see (or at least, try to. Damn crappy quality! ) it still isn't the prettiest VenDread in the world, but I'm working on it. You can really see that blending up top, tho, but it's more subtle "in person".

Well, the other good news is that I'm gonna start my vactions next Friday evening! Hurray! That means 2 weeks with potential hobby time!

Until next time (and I do hope I have an update sooner )!

That doesn't look too bad great job

Simple solution to your problem = smuggle paint onboard and paint while you fly ]

I swear to the God-Emperor I don't own any body-pillow or anything like that! Don't look at me like that, damn it!

I feel the strong desire to add to this, though I don't have pictures (and my gut says I should't show any), A Gasai Yuno body pillow, Neptune (Hyperdimension Neptunia) body pillow, Uppote FNC figurine, 5 Strike Witches nendoroids, 2 Heavens lost propery Nendoroids, and god knows how many Strike Witches cards. @GD - You gotta teach your baby some manners, she has to learn not to interrupt daddy while he's in his nerd happy hour! Just joking mate

@Spartan-Kun - Uff, maybe I didn't explain it that well. I already brought some paints with me so I can paint at my ApartHotel. I'm slowly getting used to the rhythm so I'm back to the painting game

And Spartan-Kun, really? Gasai Yuno? Really? That's the really scary part

Just a quick newsflash!

This blog will now be used for all things random, and by that I mean any painting of miniatures that aren't part of my C:SM chapter or Infinity.

Oh, what C:SM army and what Infinity? Glad you asked!

My C;SM Chapter: The Truth Bearers

My Ariadna blog.

Have a happy new year everyone!

Ooooh excellent. I've often wondered if it would be worth making separate blogs given the (in)frequency of my own updates, I shall therefore consider you a human Guinea pig and observe your success

Can't wait to check these out when I get back to my main screen.

Thanks mate Glad you liked it

The VenDread has been done for a good while for now, but to be perfectly honest, the current work schedule and load is killing my hobby drive =/ The Dread is only missing the base but since I only stay for a full day in Portugal each week, I never get to it...

I dearly hope to get my hobby passion back once my schedule is a bit more normal again.

That's right, thanks to VACATIONS! I managed to finish the VenDread, destroying my painting hiatus in the process

First things first: pretty pictures!

I finished this guy some time ago, only missing the base, but like I explained I really wasn't in any condition to complete him. Well, that was the before, thanks to this week's vacations I spent some hours this last Monday finishing the base. Yes, hours, I'm slow! Anyway, see the poor dismembered bastard near the Dread's feet? Well, he's got an important role to play, he's an HP Counter

All the pieces are magnetized so you can remove one each time the VenDread loses a HP: That's the reason I didn't add intestines or other "ropey like" gore under the chest plate, it will be constantly removed. Overall, I had lots of fun painting the CSM and using BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

Some other cool details of the dread are the runes! I used this file with several warrior charms as inspiration:
Spoiler:

I decided this Space Wolf had a particular sense of humor that he kept even after he was given the honor of using a Dreadnaught body. As such, the rune used for the Auto-cannon is for Peace:

The one used for the Melta is for Healing (Because, ya know, when you are shot with a Melta blast, no other harm will ever torment you. )

And finally, I decided to use the rune for "End strife" for his Claw. That one isn't really too funny, I bet that thing is always ending Strife

All the weapons are magnetized so the loadout can be switched. A final parting shot of our friendly VenDread, this time carrying a Melta!

Well, that's all folks! I hope I'll be able to more often once the work schedule is a bit more regular. I really want to start painting my SMs or Infinity

Until a next time and happy hobbying!
