Still looks like a 40k bank armored car to move the golden thrones about(In Inquitor, the RPG, they pay with thrones as the coins are called), Even has vault door in the back! Looked good in the link with triple axles

6 Wheels does look nice! I'd like to see Zinge's wheels on it. It's the first thing I thought of when I first saw the Taurox. It sees like everyone universally hates the treads on that thing.

You got that right! it is ugly enough with the wheels, but many trucks are like that. The all treads just looked like they were appealing to little timmies"

Zinges wheels rock.

I know this sounds stupid but I think I might have a go at this, but low rider it, drop it to the floor, drop the roof even more or take it off, maybe stretch it a bit. And give it to me orkssess of course.

I think the tires are just holding up the taurox, nothing is glued together as that same model was shown with multiple setups of tires. I think he just removed one set and added another to show what they'd look like.

Ah, so once they decide what they want to do with it, the finished model should have clearance, and I do like the tires more than the kiddy-treads

SM heads have that reinforced skeleton, which includes the skull. Make of that what you will Dave

I own SM, but I find too many new codecii are influenced by the whines and cries of jealous baby marine players.

They were jealous the IG got the Hydra, so, they get 2 new tanks that shoot down planes. Really? just couldn't include a new missile for the Whirlwind? FW Makes such the Hyperion class Whirlwind.

SM got the Centurion, gives biggert toughness, and extra wound, and allows 2 weapons to be fired if they have more than one system on them, Oh and with a device that allows split fire,,,,,Centurion=SM crisis suit sans jet-pack.

IG could use twinlinking more than SM as they have the worse Ballistic skill, but SM have almost twinlinked everything!

SM are given something that mimics other codex entries in effects when the baby mariney players cry loud enough.

@Vik. I'm just going through the Scion sprus now....there are a TON of options!! I mean..this is a great direction that GW is going with the separate shoulder/upper arm and knee/shin combos as far a I'm concerned. I still have a lot to play with, but these two sprues really look like a converters dream so far. OF course, when they are wearing armor I suppose it's easier to cut and reform limbs than when they are wearing bare skin or cloth.

@Shas..Marines have everything. Playing guard rewards strategic playing and requires more painting/modeling effort as far as I'm concerned. More grown up..I dunno. I suppose I should keep my Marine opinions to myself.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2014/04/15 02:31:17

Post by: Theophony

Bring your marine opinions dave, it's all good . I play marines, but they all wear helmets. My favorite part of a black library book was a traitor marine smiling as he pot shot these inferior new marines who were so stupid that they went around without wearing their helmets .

I like guard, just hated painting all those models that came off the table as fast as they were put out there. As it stands right now if someone made me a decent offer on all my marine stuff I'd take it. That's how tired I am of GW and their hit and miss system, marketing and price gouging.

One small complaint with the Scions sprue though....You can give two of the squaddies Hot-Shot volley guns, but only one Hot-shot volley gun is included on the sprue. Hot-Shot volley guns are supposed to be good all-around Marine/Nob/Armored infantry killers. I usually sacrifice my elites as a scary distraction/diversion for my opponent, but this weapon seems to have a decent offensive capability. You need to buy more than one box, I guess that's the idea (or convert your own double-barreled hellguns)

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2014/04/15 14:22:13

Post by: Viktor von Domm

did i get this right that there is only one box...and that you could either build a command platoon OR a stormtrooper squad out of the sprue? GW website is making a difference between the two options... same for the bullgryns/ogryns...???...i am being daft here...right?

and indeed it is converters paredise with the scion sprue...found the bitz already on bitz sites (a tad pricey if you ask me) and i have seen some nice bitz that add a ton of character... for instance the holstered lasgun...that is a nice touch... also the greatcoat set is nice...would love to see that built ...

the only thing i don´t really like that much is the suspensor to the leg bitz... that is a bit more medival than i like in my minis... tho probably not that daft to wear, eh?^^

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2014/04/15 14:44:36

Post by: dsteingass

You mean the codpeices? Yeah, keeping your nuts safe is important Yes, from the same box you can either build 5 stormtroopers or 5 command squad stormtroopers. However, you don't need the command squads to play them. A squad is 5 guys, with options to add up to 5 more to the squad for 12 points each plus gear. Ogryns/Bullgryns are the same.

it is quite confusing how they advertise it as two seperate boxes instead of one box with two ways to build them...

but we live and learn^^...

i think these will do nicley for my own army build...i think if i mix them with pistolier heads they will blend in pretty well...

I think the confusion is that they don't label them as Scions/Command squad on the box. That seems a trend with the new box style from GW...It's as if they don't ever think it all the way through or something.

We'll increase the cost of everything, and start selling $100+ models, and limited edition models, and that will convert us into a "Collectible" hobby, and that's where the money is.

I hope the addition of a metal trim to the armour is not the start of a trend for GW... They are better looking than the Chaos things, but a bit unnecessary in my eyes.

Also, would it amuse you to know that I started buying GW models to save me money on my plastic-crack addiction...

Some of my helmetless spoiled troops are showing their tragic gene issues, a fairly stable defect, but still, makes my marines ab-humans of sorts, which freaks out other marine players as I fly things in the face of their fluff. I prefer the rocky road to vanilla!

I like guard for the ides of having to be more cautious with assets or also sacrifice others, the fact of camo painting makes the models more interesting as also, these are normal guys and gals doing their part! They get average stats, weapons that are about middle range, and still even if given better gear and guns, fight everything the Marines have to face. I think that makes for some damn good stories from such fights.

I like the ornate additions to the armor. 40K should have a bit more Baroque on Guard at times. 30K Imperials seem all fashioned out of an eclectic mix of historical European styles. With Guard being from a million different worlds, and armor being manufactured all over, I think there is definitely room for many styles. WE are the ones brainwashed remember? The Vostroyans had a great Baroque feel to them I think, backed up by that one great short story about the facial hair too. Each Imperial governor can run his world as he sees fit as long as he keeps up his Imperial tithes remember? And they all develop their own styles, traditions and ways of life over the Millennia. STC tech was only really used to colonize worlds, not everything NEEDS to look the same. That's all our minds.

Besides..these are Schola boys..they get the best of the best.

I'm all for things looking different. But that's the issue I have with the moulded on details like the trim, it makes it more difficult to personalise the models because you either have to remove it or cover it up.

The Scions armour does look nice. I just hope they don't get carried away and start doing it on everything. Then it will all start to look the same again, like the chaos range.

Look forward to seeing what you do with all the new shinys, Dave.

I sooooo second your statement.
Its really what we can think of in our tiny little heads
All these worlds and planets out there, each with their own flavour - Guard really has ALL the possibilities you can think of. Just make a nice little story around it ....well and don't buy third party

Dave, I just thought of what the taurox needs besides zinge tires.....mudflaps , I know you could rock some awesome mudflaps out, and I bet they'd be riveted on as well .

Yeah! Mudflaps would be easy. I'm thinking mine will have some extra bodywork and plenty of extra bitz.

Iike the look more with the zinge tires, but the fenders are still waaaaay too big. Definitely need something there.

Firstly, Hi Dave! :-) sorry i've been out of touch lately thanks to being a day walker again :-( *sigh* but I've been trying to stay up to date with your projects! I am really looking forward to seeing you get back into some IG work and models, especially that god awful armoured car thing! and the new scions? storm troopers right? I like the goggled heads and can see you doing something special with the unit for some reason! I dunno they seem a little more Dave-ish than some other models :-)

Yeah, I kept busy this past week(end) with other stuff unfortunately. I read the prequel novel to Bioshock, so naturally, I had to play BioShock 1 and 2 (and the DLC for Infinite). Man, that is a truly fascinating story! It would make for some interesting Art Deco terrain if a game and miniatures existed. The next weekend will probably be full of yardwork and other stuff too, maybe I'll get some hobby time, I dunno. I started reading the Macharian Crusade books, hopefully that will inspire me a bit.

Dave, enjoy your off time. I keep looking or inspiration as well. Tried to tidy up the workspace and hoped that would do it....nope. I haven't been able to even get excited about black library books, but I've just put down Vulkan Lives and the Mark of Calth because I couldn't get into them.

Hawk wargames drop zone commander is releasing a new faction that is very Art Deco. Including a mono rail train that fits the bill also, too bad they are such small scale.

I read the orus Heresy books up through Mechanicum, but the Space Marine books were better at first, when they seemed more human. I really do prefer the Guard Novels, Dan Abnett is even much better when he's writing about footsloggers or Titans vs. Marines IMHO. William King (of Gotrek & Felix fame) wrote these Macharian books, so it's got a lot of humanity to it so far.

As for Art Deco..there's just something about the Underwater City of Rapture that really sparks my imagination. The designs seem impossible to do in miniature...maybe that's the appeal/challenge? I dunno.

Announcing my imminent return to the modeling desk in August.

The new job has been quite a life and schedule adjustment, however I am now past my 90 day contractor period and am now a full-time blood employee (USA USA ) Part of that status means we all have to do a stint on the night shift to get the unique experience that comes with night shift work.

This schedule change will coincide with GenCon for me. so:
1. I'll have new loot to play with after GenCon (as I always do)
2. I just built a new gaming rig (not really relevant, but exciting)
3. my off-work nights will be spent in the man-cave alone with plenty of long hours to work on stuff.
4. obviously, ladygeek will be sleeping while I'm home, so loud noises such as power tools will be non-kosher, but field tests have proven that my Badger Airbrush compressor does not wake her up.

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years...

Another GenCon has come and gone, and while exhausted, we had a fantastic time!

This is the scene EVERY MORNING outside ONE of the dealer hall doors when they are about to open them at 10AM
You earn 100XP every time you navigate this throng while avoiding a crop-dusted fart

Skirmish Games were the theme this year it seems....

Mercs - http://megacongames.com/games/mercs/
If you haven't seen the kickstarter buzz on this one, it's a small-scale near-future sci-fi skirmish game meant to be played with 5-man teams and played very tactical
Ladygeek chose Texico and House 9, I chose EU, Inc (so new it doesn't even have a box yet), and House 4 factions. The models are fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to building some terrain for this game. It plays on a 2x3' board, which is convenient.

Wild West Exodus - http://www.wildwestexodus.com/
Finally Western Steampunk! Remember my walking steam train scratchbuild? Well I fell in love with these miniatures (35mm) and picked up the starter set and the rulebook. Steampunk Union Soldiers FTW! So much potential for terrain too. This has me very very excited indeed!
Here are some shots of the demo table in the dealer's hall

And then there is this (no I didn't get one...yet)

Mantic was showing strong this year, They had intro games running constantly during the con:

Ladygeek's Dwarves

Deadzone- I'm not sure about the gameplay on this one yet, but Theo turned me onto the potential of the terrain. Here I have a metric ass-ton of the stuff, and they were practically giving i away at con prices!

RIVET WARS - http://rivetwars.com/
The only boardgame we bought was this hybrid bard/miniature game. THIS GAME (fantastic title aside) is loads of fun, and we got our copy signed by Ted Terranova.
The Con exclusive miniature was a not-Indiana Jones

On the hobby front:

I got to meet our very own Galorn working the Games & Gears booth! Although when I went back to find him later in the weekend, he wasn't at the booth, maybe they let him sleep I didn't get to talk to him much, he was a busy guy

Pro Studio Brushes, soap, towerls, GenCon Exclusive portable brush, and the Badger Airbrush booth was selling these nifty airbrush stencils as well as their own line of AB primer! (Finally)
I heard BrianCJ was there, but I never found the Artemis room this year. I hope he had a good con too!

This guy, Joe Latham of Cathedral Arcanum - http://www.cathedralarcanum.com/
had his wares for sale at the WarStore booth. Some high Quality sandbacg casts

and..Female Not-Cadians!

Miscellaneous:

(really) heavy Metal Steampunk D6s

I played in a 7+ hour Apocalypse (Guard vs. Orks) game- the revenge of Ghazkull from last year's game I played in (long-time readers may remember)- More on that later
and a great intro game of Bolt Action as well.
There were not as many really impressive gaming tables this year though, despite the biggering of the gaming table areas, Infinity had the most impressive tables, however they were ALWAYS crowded, and I didn't get a chance to do much with Infinity.

Warsenal could've made a TON of money if they only had a booth! Here is Corvus Belli's phenomenal demo table

Cool stuff dave.

I've looked at rivet wars during the kickstarter and in the local shop. Looks fantastically fun. Iveseen the development of Mercs over the years as the maker was always getting plugged on the dreamforgegames site. Hurray for kings of war dwarf army, lady geek will have fun with those rules, I love the orcs, and my brother in law plays undead. As for Wild West Extreme, one word......Romeo..... The models look neat, and I like the concepts for it, but his name is tied to it and I can't go there. That train was a steal for backers of the kickstarter, I think they got it for like $60.00 and now its a couple hundred to buy poor planning that . All the other haul looks cool as well, one year .

I can't read the deadzone book without getting bored. I think all my sprues of buildings from the set will just get necromundified. Make sure to build up your callouses on your fingers before assembling the deadzone terrain, the clips can bite .

Gorgeous Infinity table there.

I'll have to look up those not-cadians, not heard of them and they look like they might be useful.

There's some cool WWX figures about, look forward to seeing what you do with them, and indeed the rest of your goodies......enjoy.

Thanks Damo! B the time I got to the GW booth, they were sold out anyway. In fact, they didn't have a single thing that I wanted there. They offered free shipping, but meh. I am excited to get my hobby on again!

Graven- I saw their DS9 exclusive, it was impressive, but the molded color was horrible, it needed paint for sure.

the local shop holds STAW tournaments all the time. I think they got 3 of the DS9s as prizes. two had been given out and the third is in the shop. I had to pass on STAW because o the looks and scale, but I am much more of a trekkie. I think the big thing that wizkids has going for them is that they do a fantastic job with tournament support and prizes. Like the DS9 station, cards, and limited models.

Whats first on your post Gencon agenda Dave?

As a personal rule, I generally avoid pre-painted minis, because you see people all the time at conventions buying huge crates, and standing near a trash can at one of the food courts, stripping packaging, hoping to find a rare miniature. The disproportionate scale bothers me too Theo. Everyone knows a Galaxy Class should be more than twice the length of the Constitution Class!!

The Texico MERCS minis are cleaned up, ready for primer. I just have to decide on a color scheme and basing.

NO! Airbrush primer is designed to be used right from the bottle with no messing with it. However, Vallejo Primer seems liek it needs more shaking than this stuff. Magic chemistry methinks

Your train is going to be a masterpiece for sure Vik! We always book our hotel room as soon as they open the registration in March every year. We stay at the Mariott, right across the street (and connected by overhead hampster tunnels) to the convention center. That way after our feet start to hurt from walking through the dealer hall, it's a short trip back to the hotel room to drop off the loot, rest, refresh, and head back when we're ready. The loot tends to collect in bags back at the hotel, leaving it safe and secure. I made a specific trip for most everything you see here, especially the bigger boxes. Even so, a convention of geeks tends not to have issues with stuff getting stolen, we bring MILLIONS of $$ to the city of Indianapolis every year, and where large gatherings of people always generates some crime, not so much with a bunch of gaming geeks. The local restaurants and pubs all theme their menus for us and are really generally welcoming with events and Sun King brewery even brews a special beer every year for GenCon. This year is was called "The Froth of Khan"

I am lucky! oh so lucky! It took us one trip down to the parking garage with our luggage, and one trip down with the loot, the Kia did the rest of the work
The Rivet wars stuff and the WWX stuff are just not the same scale, I accept that, and in a way it is refreshing for me, since that means I get t make ALL NEW stuff for them!
The brushes seem of very high quality, so far so good.

I always worry about a car called KIA "Killed In Automobile" always springs to mind SHUDDERS

No I know the Rivet War stuff is a scale of its own but I had an idea of converting some of their tanks and walkers to Grot uses so was wondering of the actual size, hence the request for the IG comparison to get an idea that was a hint by the way

Those brushes look like quality but it was the travel brush that was of interest, so new scaled scenery on its way then I guess of a wild west theme maybe

I'll have to take a pic of one for ya then LDD ALthough, the tanks aren't out yet, they were on display with the expansions, but they need to fulfill the KS orders before they release them to the rest of us.
I'd trust (both of our) Kias over any GM product

So, I spent the night painting, not done yet, but you might get the idea now.

These are similar to Infinity models with all the damn armor panels (but not the dinky limbs) many highlights and details still to add. At this point in the early morning, all the orange and brown looks the same

Very fitting for a dusty environment and see where you are going with these, the green is a brave choice but works don't think I would have been so daring.

I am sure the KIA is a fine vehicle we have plenty knocking around here these days, Its just the car tag it always makes me think that

Yes if you don't mind a comparison pic that would be great mate, I thought the starter box set had tanks ? obviously not I hope it ain't long before the general release then.

I think thats why I have never been a fan of the infinity range but there new biker models look pretty cool

The Ghostbusters are fantastic! Slimer has been eating a bit too much though. I like how they are all sculpted mid-capture.

Oh I ordered the set nonetheless Thanks for the link Theo!

Terrain in Mercs works in a tiered Elevation Rating system, ER1-ER3. ER1 is roughly 4 feet (windows, railings, linear cover- minis are considered ER2) ER2 is the next 4 feet (the part you look and shoot out of) , and ER3 is the second storey. So the standard 3 inch Necromunda/40k/Infinity/etc. floor heights work well.

moving is something we too would need to do in a coupla years... but with our both respective hobbies (I guess you know mine...and my wife does knitting and sewing and all other handmade stuff...) and the plethora of toys of the kids , moving would be like hacking of your own leg......even if we would be able to find a fit and not too pricy apartment...

but I wish you both that you get that house as it sounds like a very good match the way you describe it...!

The packing everything up will be the pain in the azz. Not something we'll be doing in a hurry for sure.

Theo- My bench is a mess of DZ parts right now. there are just soo many damn parts in that box..and you know, it seems like not enough of the right ones! Sort of frustrating. I don't really know what I'm doing with them yet Just playing.

I decided to pick up more of the deadzone bits today and stopped by miniaturemarket on the way home. I got the second set down size as the quadrant has too many things I didn't need/want. But I think all the sets are short on connectors. They really have it designed for small buildings for their system and not set up to have enough connectors go do large flat areas wether vertical of horizontal.

If you can buy the new house and still have a few weeks or a month on your current place then being a couple miles away makes for some easy moving, especially with all your gaming materials that don't pack so well. That's how we moved one of the pastors a few weeks ago, my SUV and another parishioners pick up and multiple trips to his new place and storage place that were both less than five miles from his old residence.

Good luck with getting the house and the move .

Pokes Dave with a stick (not sharp of course)

Hey just stopped by the local train shop near my house and saw this. I know your a gijoe afficianato, but I never saw this

It's the gijoe Saratoga aircraft carrier. It's only about the size of a sky striker, but it has buttons for lights, attack sirens and an elevator on it. It also has joy sticks on the back when you flip up part of the deck and 6-10 mini f14 fighters. I thought it was cool and thought of you. He's not selling it right now, it was his sons, but he's going to consider it and will call me if he decides to sell.

The planes are about an inch long each, the carrier is about 2' if I remember right.

Found it on YouTube, I noticed it had wheels under it, didn't realize it moved on its own

It must've been brand licensed at some point, much like the lunchboxes and HO scale train sets of back in the day. It's got the retro 60's Joe logo rather than the 80s RAH logo, so it probably came out 90s-oughts I'd imagine

Yes great to see the necromunda come back what kit are you using never seen them before are they your flanges he heh hehe he or new kit ones

See the airbrush is back and in action is this going into the original setting or a new layout

Look loads of rivets

This was an experiment to see how the Dreadzone panels can be used. It's pretty simple tower, nothing fancy, but I'm not a big fan of the way the corners fit, so I covered them with what I realize now was the most expensive option, three triangular strips of styrene. It'll go on the old layout (still classic) and yes, they are my flanges

As for the airbrush, this was also an experiment to see what all can be done with my bigger, Badger Patriot vs. my finer tipped Badger Renegade Krome.

The Salt Method is new for me too. It looks ok. I was afraid I'd overdone it, but really, I Think it was underdone OR it was my choice of a metallic rust basecoat vs. a more orange rust basecoat. The metallic rust looks really nice underneath the yellow, but not as well under the green. More pics of that to come.

And oh yes, Rivets. must have em.

Good stuff Dave! new techniques are always fun eh! :-) I think you're right though, a more orange colour under that you could weather down the sides with rust streaks may have stood out more, but the weathering with salt does give nice randomness to it all not to mention the panels you chose are cool as :-)

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/17 22:50:58

Post by: dsteingass

Yeah, I'll do much more weathering before it's all done. I just bought some Vallejo Washes I'm anxious to try. Plus I'll give it the usual "grimy pre-war" treatment that has worked for me in the past.

Good work Dave.

Can't really help with the salt effect, as I've not tried it. But it seems to have done the job of giving the rust bubbles.

It's better to have under-done the rust underneath, than to have over-done it. It's easier to add rustiness to the breaks than to reduce it.

Was your salt all one size? Maybe a mixture of grain sizes may help get more variation in the final effect.

I used 2 sizes. Med. Morton's Table salt (The kind in the blue can) and Morton's course Kosher Salt. That's right, this terrain, is now safe for Passover.

I have never done the salt method so cant offer any help with that one, the overall looks good though maybe just highlight a few rust spots on the green section might lift it enough ?

The flanges look great I honestly thought they were a new kit version how did you do the curved pipe section by the way

Thanks guys! It's good to be back. ANd it's good to know people are still interested. Pipes are Hirst Arts casts. The flanges are just glued to them. The valve is from that Chemical plant set.

Oh dear, I do hope you are not using that windex or bissell ammonia cleaner as a thinner for the airbrush. Please try something like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Titan-32-oz-Paint-Easy-Latex-Paint-Conditioner-0154840/100657717 It works beautifully. And it is fairly inexpensive.

I'm glad to hear that. (where's the sigh of relief emoticon anyway?) I have heard of people using windex etc as a thinner for airbrushes.

I always thought Hirst molds were for dental plaster (hydrocal, merlin's magic, whatever it's called) only.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/19 12:22:21

According to the Hirst Arts FAQ, you can use Resin but it damages the molds

http://www.hirstarts.com/faq/faq.html

One of these days I'll buy some molds and give it a go. Looks like fun

Yeah, Dental Plaster. It wouldn't be economical to use resin with them. It would be quite heavy too.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/21 08:26:39

Post by: lone dirty dog

Yes seems a lot of people use dental plaster I just like the finish you get with resin plus you can cut it easily, from working with Linka moulds as a kid I remember cutting plaster with disastrous results and it easily chips.

Maybe I will try it and see what the results are like though.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/21 21:09:59

Post by: Camkierhi

Played a bit with Dental plaster, it depends a bit on your mix, I made the mistake of mixing it with PVA and water and some aggregate, it was so solid it could not be cut, I mean literally, it was absolutely solid, tried a hacksaw and it blunted the blade.

But it is great if you use it normally.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/21 21:30:17

Post by: lone dirty dog

OK OK I will give it a try now to find where to get it from

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/21 22:30:59

Post by: Camkierhi

I got mine here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dental-Extra-Hard-Stone-3-WHITE-Casting-Plaster-1-kg-/131389080623?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Medical_Equipment_Instruments_ET&hash=item1e9766442f#ht_3546wt_1137

1KG goes miles, it says mix 100g to 28ml, but I water it further down so it pours easier, takes a little longer to set but works great.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/22 00:27:34

Post by: dsteingass

Yeah, plaster of Paris and Dental stone are NOT the same thing. Dental doesn't leave powder everywhere. It can be sanded and cut if needed.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/22 09:28:02

Post by: lone dirty dog

Right will give it go then not bad price, plus I need to build some Apoc style buildings for back drops so should double for that.

Cool of it can be cut and sanded means I will be able to do what I need with it, what's the drying time like for this ?

Forget the drying time just reread the article 30mins damn that's quicker than I thought.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2015/01/30 16:19:16

Post by: dsteingass

so, here are the results with only the salt removed, not bad, but there is much more damage to do...

I also accidentally left scratches, but I can work with that

OH!..and...IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: salt is like mold lines, you only find them once you post the pic to Dakka

dave looking in and spreading the good news^^...
proof of life is always good signs^^

the new (potential) house looks promising, lots of room and from what i see a whole garage/workspace and a veritable mansion...and lots of garden space for peppers...and bean(y)

but i don´t envy you for that state your living in currently...moving is probably next to staying in a hospital the worst scenario i could come up with atm...i hate living with/out of boxes.....
so...here is hoping it will only be short and temporarily...

cheers and best wishes to ladygeek and beany

your friend vik

The House is great, a bit dated in places (built in 1941) but the barn was only built 3 years ago. it has power, water, gas, cable, and Cat5 already ran underground to it I'll have lots of DIY projects, but yeah...you can see the potential.

Oh yeah Vik...plenty of room for all of the things that make life worth living! We're just waiting on the last of the paperwork to be processed. We either close next friday or the friday after that! It IS a done deal!

I don't understand how you can go buy a 40 or 60k car in 2 hours, but a 100k house takes a month Oh well, the anticipation around here is so overwhelming right now, the living half-packed up isn't so bad really. I'm just glad you guys still check in here even when life has me busy. It's much appreciated friends!

btw, all of the "stuff" in these pictures belongs to the previous owner, I can only assume they will clean it all up before we close. I've never bought a house before, so I really don't know what to expect.

Life is full of surprises. Look forward to your further escapades. I feel your pain at the moment. I am in the same state but no new home.

Oh and you will be amazed at what people leave behind.

Yeah, Dave, moving is a pain. Try having a house built. That really sucks. But glad things are working out. You're better off than I was though - you'll get back to work faster.

Yeah, after I get into some DIY biz
Like Tom Petty said "The waiting is the hardest part"

We really dig the neighborhood too, an old residential street with a mix of architectural styles, well-maintained by a diverse mix of people. I did NOT want to live in a homogenous neighborhood with nothing but ignorant herpa-derpa people. It's only a few blocks from the St. Joseph river, and while it's very close to downtown and anywhere else we want to go in the city, the local commercial areas are pretty hip, full of local businesses that make it a proper community, including game stores, record stores, coffee shops, small groceries, etc. In other words, it's an area where the "privileged" tend to avoid while they go to their chain restaurants and stores. No neighborhood association telling us what color the mailbox needs to be because the people have mutual respect for each other.

funny mentioning tuesday... on that day i will have my oral exams...or rather the colloquium to my final papers...well...here goes nothing^^

the place looks very nice...and how you describe the neighbourhood is exactly how i want mine too... the place where yu want to le the hair down cant have people around you that tell you how to...!

looked at all the pretty pics... the house is quite spacey... lots of room... only the bath looks smaller...but since you have two of ´em you can still shower simultaneously^^

i have no idea where on a scale i could measure the price of that estate... here you mostly rent... that´s currently the only way for the family of mine to live... we wish we had a house... but that will eventually never happen...:(
anyways^^...good luck with the move! and may your working days be not too long so that the home is soon up and running agan!

cheers and best wishes to you three!

vik

Thanks Vic! This same house in any bigger city like L.A, New York, Toronto, etc. would cost 4-5 times as much. Newer homes around here cost about 2-3 times as much, so it's a good deal. I have no idea what makes people want to live in these sterile McMansion neighborhoods where every house looks the same and is built with the same cheap construction materials, but they do. maybe Status, I dunno, don't care. Yeah, there are two bathrooms, exactly what we needed, since we both have to be to work at 7AM every day. Notice the old-school tub/shower combos? The little one is a miniature version of the bigger cast iron enameled tub. I kind of like the almost art-deco style. We are having some work done too. like adding exhaust fans to the bathrooms and a stainless Steel range hood over the stove, as well as a few electrical upgrades. I have a week off work in two weeks when I plan on painting, not miniatures, but walls and ceilings and just doing some basic projects around the place. Good luck on the finals Vic!

Good luck, Vik.

Nice looking house, Dave. So much space.
Look forward to you getting up a running again. No pressure, but quickly quickly.

at dr H ...i am getting closer to the point where you can call me nursy^^

and i know that shower bat combo... lived my whole life with these^^... but we don´t own the see through wall anymore...as it got too filthy due to our bad water.. so now we just have a shower curtain...

big scale painting... well... as exhausting as it is...at least you see in a sec what you´ve done... that can be in essence a very rewarding deed...especially when moving n and not out...so´s you do it for the future and not for somebody else... hope you don´t have to do too much cleanup in your current home? did you sell it already?

and thanks mate ^^

The big questions are:

1) Will it be Government Green?
2) Will you airbrush it or brush?
3) Square footage of hobby heaven?

Good luck bud with the whole moving thing. Wish I was closer to help, that would be so good, us all around for a painting sesh.

Oh and best of luck Vik. Thinking of you bud.
