Thanks Guys! I really appreciate the feedback! I've been thinking about this for over a year!!
I had bought an extra 2'x4' top board, so I used the leftover lumber from my load, and it turns out was JUST enough to build an additonal return bench.
You may remember me leveling the top of the baseboard, that was because this poured concrete floor is not level. I wish I'd remembered that, as a result, the legs of this bench are cut exactly to the same length as the other legs, but the dip in the floor required me to shim it up. I'll need to trim these to the size of the leg I keep coming back to the thought that since the walls from here on out are concrete, so I should have everything as freestanding as possible. At first glance you might ask "Well Dave, why not use that for your painting bench?" Well I could, but I'm thinking of another corner apparatus on the other side of the room for painting and a spray booth under the hole to the crawlspace (for ventillation ) Logically, what do I need to the right of me while modeling? Bitz storage! I'm thinking shelves attached to the back of this bench to hold bitz boxes! Whaddya think?
However, after sitting and thinking, I've come up with all these grandiose ideas about building a matching titan of a painting bench on the other wall, but consider this scenario....
I've just built something, and I want to paint it.....do I really want to roll my chair 8-10 feet every time? Perhaps this IS the painting bench?
Even if I build a wall-rack for paints, 4 feet in length isn't enough room for all my paint. So I guess that rules it out as a paint ench. I've seriously stalled my progress worrying about how to do this right the first time. I really need some advice.
I'd go for the two sides approach...seperating the two major work stages on two separate desks helps you to be able to paint on a clean desk and still work on new stuff prepaint on the other...besides, you need space bigger than the side table for the AB setup, the paint racks as you stated...maybe a spinning disc? Like you would use for pottery? And a photo taking section too...
One suggestion of mine tho...it will later on come in handy to have a rolling mat for your chair to not ruin your floor...
Thanks Vik! I knew I could rely on you! I've got one small problem with mirroring the model bench, there is a big, capped sewer pipe sticking out of the floor that will be in the way of my feet. I'll have to design it so that it is out of my way, yet still accessible if needed for maintenance. Oh, and I'm not worried about the floor, it's smooth, painted, poured concrete. Besides, it's already ruined because apparently the former owners put down rug padding before the floor paint was fully dried, causing little bits to stick to the floor. That's the splotches you see. It scrapes right off wit ha putty knife, but leaves a blemish on the reddish brown floor paint. The idea of a photo-taking area is already handled! check out the space between the top of the styrene strip organzier and the light I can add a backdrop there easily.
Well, I had a bit more sophisticated in mind for the photo booth section...have you seen Klaus thread lately? He uses an LED strip mounted on a n arch...looks classy as hell.....
May be there is with the sewer pipe an opportunity even to include a small sink?
I'm going to install a slop-sink on the other side of the basement, near the laundry area for that, to get wate supply pipes over there, would require a plumber. I don't do plumbing. I tried installing a new garbage disposal in the kitchen and I snapped the trap pipes off at the wall under the cabinet. I just brought home another load of lumber....back to work! No not yet, i'm way behind on my forum reading. I've got three days of vacation left, gotta get gak done.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's some shelving I built, the supports fit that gap some of you carpenters surely raised an eyebrow at I also cut plywood to cover the crawlspace hole. The shelves are all 6" high, designed specifically for the Sterilite 6 Qt/5.7L clear shoe bins that work so well for bitz. It fits exactly 5 across.
Yes Shas...Yes I am! And I'm having fun doing it too!
When we bought the house, some stuff was left in the basement. Among them is this big~ass wooden wardrobe cabinet. I know WHY it was left behind...It's Heavy as a Baneblade! So I'll integrate it into my Man-cave Obviously, it's useless to me as a wardrobe
Get rid of the rod, add a heavy duty shelf, and I've got a classy kit/sprue storage.
Only problem I have for you is, if you have plenty of space for stuff, you will soon find you fill it up, I have, had an enormous space for a work area, 6 months later I have to crawl and climb in to get to my desk.
Did exactly the same with a wardrobe, excellent storage.
Oh Cam....no...poor, young...Cam...... I ALREADY have too much stuff. This is all to try and wrangle what I already have bro When we were house shopping, I was shopping for THIS space to put all my stuff

Thanks! Yeah, or the Indiana Winter
For the first time ever. All (Most) Bitz are in the same place and (not) organized I'm going to guess that this will come in handy in the future
As I was going hrough boxes of stuff, I found an old catalog from Model Expo
I always drooled over this thing, but today, I went into Harbor Freight Tools (a store full of cheap, mostly Chinese-made tools). I was looking for commercial storage options, but I found a cheap, (not oak) Chinese Knock-off for super-cheap!
I'll keep my seldom-used, specialty tools in there, accessible, but safe and out of the way
It does NOT "use oak construction with tongue and groove joinery", but it'll do for my purposes.
So, with a little reconfiguration, this is where we are at tonight!
Cheers Boys!

Feel already the pulling sensation of having to start a new hobby project? All that neat and still virgin space literally sucks any time and energy out of your system that you could have used for so called essential life preserving deeds. I know this desk calls out to me from over the pond to craft till I drop...
And even not being able to tell all the lil packages in that wardrobe...but there are ancient treasures there...from at least second edition to gods knows where...:awe:
Well Vik, as I dig through stuff, I get ideas, but not quite yet. I'll save that moment of starting a new project down here and savor it. Yeah, i've collected a lot of old metal and plastic in there. Remember, some of those boxes are just full of other sprues.

Thanks Vik! For reading, AND noticing Just don't look too close Getting everything straight, level and plumb on this slightly uneven floor has been a real challenge. That tiny little corner bench might not look like much, but that is the capstone piece that straightens everything else up. The right side still leans, but I'll screw on a support board once the rest is complete. Now decisions need to be made. Do I want additional power over here? Don't forget the nailer boards for the wall material, and btw...WTF material AM I using for the wall? What board can I get that gives me exactly 2 inch shelving for paint bottles? How fething cool will it look to have paints spreading out over a wall corner?
Firstly congrats on the wedding to you both may your life be happy and full of joy Great work on the man cave envious of the space you have all looks good and plenty of workspace.

Looking fantastic, definitely reading several times a day. Painting desk looks awesome. Plenty of room.
Maybe peg board for the walls, or you could line it with spice racks. Or I have seen on Dakka someone made a board where the pots where stored on their sides. That was quite cool. Or like me make lots of shelves from foam core.

Have you thought about wiring an outlet or two into those risers in the bench? Might want to put some in on the workbench side as well.
Never know when you’ll need to plug in a dremel, charge your phone, or whatnot.
And if you wire things now, you’ll be set for whatever the future brings. When the rest of us are reworking out workspaces to accommodate the new fangled electric paintbrushes, you can just plug in and get going.

I've thought about this, but I'm not really using furniture-grade nice wood, it's just construction-grade structural lumber. Also Al my crooked screwheads and split corners are very very visible. It would look kind of crappy with a nice varnish. Even if I just sealed the tops, I really should've done that before I screwed them on from the underside. I figured by using cheap wood, I can just replace a piece it if it gets bad. Think of it as sacrificial wood. Like a giant cutting board, made of much, much softer wood than a cutting board (in oak, these tops would cost Tens of Thousand$! I'll probably use thin sheets of luan over working areas that get the brunt of abuse.

Thanks man! I have 4 foot surge protectors for each bench's edge, and the shelf bench already has it's own power for the laptop I'm typing this on right now The Dremel and Dremel workstation have their own dedicated space and power. But you're right, you can never have too much. I'm thinking I can nail those blue plastic new construction boxes to the stud legs. I'd imagine I'd need power lower rather than higher up on the wall, then I don't have to fuss with jig-sawing box holes out of the wall material. The good news is each outlet you see (one on each of the three sides) are all on separate 40 Amp circuits. So we shouldn't have any capacity problem, I've been running my Delta Compound Miter saw throughout this project, and it doesn't even dim the lights as it draws amps.

Didn't you say there was a pipe under your workbench??? Enterprising young chap as yourself could fix that up. Never another need to step away from your desk again.
Light is one of those things you can never have enough of. OK, that’s a slight exaggeration, but I would err on the side of too much, then not enough. Also give some thought to the flavor of light. Different bulbs, different spectrums and all that.
If you don’t want to custom build something, I hear good things about people getting paint racks designed for nail polish. But take my advice with a grain of salt, I just have pots scattered across my desk...
Heh...I think i'm ok with custom-building at this point
Yeah, those instant start ballasts with daylight tube really cover the work areas. The small bench light is almost too much spot light, and there is an overhead fixture that just needs replaced with something better.
Need more. Look at the very strong shadows on the floor of your photo. What you have is good task lighting. Add some good overall overhead lighting. It won't take much.
Barzam's comment about different sort of lights is a good one. If have too much light from the high Kelvin bulbs (5500K and up) things will get too blue. A fair number of 'daylight' bulbs do this. Consider some natural light bulbs. Something with a CRI -- Color Rendering Index-- of 90 or higher for your painting area. Philips makes some. Many of those Daylight bulbs are under CRI 90.
These are the new T8 6500k tubes- no blue at all- just daylight. They've really improved these since I bought daylight bulbs last. The small desk is just a plain jane flourescent tube, that actually looks too harsh on that desk to me. I don't think my phone camera really does that good of job, but yeah- there is an overhead fixture that needs replaced. I positioned the overheads so there would be no shadow at all on the working surface. Do I really need to eliminate shadows under the bench? other than finding a head or lasrifle that fell, why would that matter?
dsteingass wrote: Do I really need to eliminate shadows under the bench? other than finding a head or lasrifle that fell, why would that matter?
You say that like it’s not something that happens all the darn time!
What you should be doing is rigging powerful lights pointing sideways at floor level, so any dropped bits cast a stark shadow making them easy to find.
i recently also got me a pair of glasses...cheap ones you get at a drug store...in fact because Red mentioned these to me...and these also comes with LED lights...s if i put them on and look for stuff that droped i look almost like Cyclops...(xmen if you´re confused^^)
Honestly, It already looks like I'm welding down there. Perhaps Instead, I should paint the floor flourescent orange, so the little grey bitz stick out

When house shopping, we ran across some EPIC basements- completely finished, multi-room, fancy stuff...But the pricing got really high on those, and most were the McMansion-type newer construction look-alikes. They just do not put the craftsmanship into home construction anymore. This house is 75 years old next year. And for a basement poured in 1941, it's pretty sweet
With basements in the Midwest United States, there is always the possibility of flooding though. It's VERY, Very remote, but sometimes we get too much rain and We live at the confluence of 3 rivers, so gak can happen. In fact, we live only about 3 streets from a river, but we're also in-between 2 flood-control Dams. I've built most things elevated down here, and we're insured so...

Do you have a good sump pump? Dehumidifiers?
As someone who has a damp basement, while you are still in the construction phase, I’d be sure you have these things straightened out. Make sure nothing you care about is on the floor. If it is damp, be sure to run a dehumidifier. Dust + Damp = crud build up on minis. Not a good thing.
(I may be preaching to the choir here, but after bailing out my basement a half dozen times, it’s a subject close to my heart)
Ah, the damp basement. My old nemesis. So I keep the gutters leaf free, and the downspouts attached to additional piping to divert all water well away from the foundation. Also, Drylok is your very good friend, as is some sort of sealer for the floor. And the dehumidifier of course. Here in Maryland, things are humid, very humid, for the summer. I run the dehumidifier 24-7 from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Haven't had any problems. Well, sometimes the paint dries too quickly We also get the Radon gas worries in some places.
One of the ALTO bulbs from Philips? Some of those have excellent color rendering. Anyway, the CRI is important, moreso than temperature, for painting, since paint can take on odd appearances under certain lighting. The old Games Workshop Space Wolf gray-- the stuff from the mid-nineties-- would do this depending upon the lighting. Something to consider. Other thing is, as the eyes age, they need brighter light. (as I know all too well :( ) Taking care of that now, while you are building the space, will be easier than doing it later. You are planning to be there a while, no? It's not the shadows under the bench really, it's just that there are some very strong shadows in general. I used to find it a bit jarring in my hobby space to have strong differences in lighting. It could just be me. I'm sure you'll get it right for your own needs.
What color are those epoxy sealers for things like basement floors? They come in a light gray I think.
Hey Vik, the glasses do work. I also found a fun little desk lamp. Has a ring of 40 LEDs built around a 5x magnifying glass. Haven't had much chance to use it though. Seems like it will come in handy.
For dropped bits, an old trick from my woodworking days. (1) sweep or vaccuum the floor before beginning to work-- or just keep the floor very clean and (2) if you drop something, a decent hand broom and dustpan. That way you don't have to actually see the bit. Just sweep in general and you'll get it quicker than you would by looking for it.
Hmmm, that turned out to be a long and boring post.
Flock the floor. Good one. Or I should say deliberately flocking the floor. I'm sure that I am not the only one who has accidentally flocked a floor.
Oh yeah. We've got sump pump, all checked, I bought the biggest residential dehumidifier I could find, and I have it piping directly into the sump crock. We're dry down here for sure. We're actually getting new gutters and downspouts as soon as the company schedules us. It's one of those seamless companies, that bring in the big long~ass truck rig and form them to fit your house on-site. No joints, all downspouts will be aimed far away from the foundation with the good teflon-coated leafguards. I'm way ahead of you on that
I don't think the camera shows the light because it's such a long room.
We had torrential rains here the other night, no problems....this time, but like you my house is 78 years old (same as my dad ), one leaks occasionally, the other is My dad .

I've got a 12 hour shift today, 8 tomorrow, then I get some more time off to work on this behemoth of a painting bench. I'm planning the airbrush booth now. Since I use only acrylics, it'll be simplified (I don't need tons of Cubic Feet Per Minute of static airflow to suck toxic fumes out) it'll just be enough to serve dual purpose as an extractor and paint drying area.
Do you really get that much toxic fumes when only working with acrylic paints...no other flow enhancements etc...? You know I can't smell but I was quite naive to airbrush on my desk in the living room...of course I went the distance and made sure everything was kept still clean even after airbrushing...
No, none at all Vik. I'm pretty sure you don't want to inhale wet paint, that's not good, but no, there are no toxic fumes from acrylic. It's more of a matter of moving some air, controlling overspray (remember how my first row of paint bottles was all oversprayed), add some wire racks, and it'll really help with drying paint quicker.

I read that last bit as “Add some wine racks...”. So while you are waiting for stuff to dry, pop open a bottle, it helps pass the time.
Speaking of which, you have space for a fridge to store painting supplies that need to be served kept cold?
As a matter of fact, I do! There is a space behind the bar that will accommodate one of those small, travel trailer refrigerators to definitely keep painting supplies FRESH

It's currently set-up non-vented, If I need more ventillation for whatever reason (decide to start playing with laquers or other smelly stuff in the future) And add furnace exhaust pipes. She's got a 225 CFM variable speed fan, that'll draw air up, through a charcoal filter and out through the top vent. (outside if I pipe it). It also has a light bulb socket that'll let me add another daylight bulb. I'll line the back and bottom of the booth with something and add some wire shelving. It is looking incredible. I am actually looking into standardized larger pots of main colours. Transfering smaller pots into a larger proper screw top pot. They are not expensive and would save me messing about with 3 pots of Abadon Black at once. Just a thought while you are there.
Heh Vik...If I were a smart man, I would've bought the range hood before building the bench, as a result, there is a nice little chunk that needed filled. It looks a bit odd, but oh well They cut me this shelf right in the store with a HUGE pair of bolt cutters Other than the shelf for my air compressor, I think this is MOST of the major construction. I'll leave the top shelf off until I decide what's happening with the furnace pipe area.

The magnetic strips I got were bought at harbor freight. They hold the full set of the hole punches you recommend without a problem, including the 1". But I think it's an 18" strip.
I'll have to take a closer look at Harbor Freight. I saw the tool chest, saw the price, and clutched it like I was stealing it They have drill bits for my plethora of pin vices if I recall, so I don't have to mess with changing bits, just grab the different size.
You can still get them http://www.gamesandgears.co.uk/Brushcare.aspx But if you make one, make it less fiddly, and more sturdy. They looks good, but can twist with a nudge. Even glued and screwed.

Don't worry, I've been thinking ahead this whole time, the chassis could definitely be modified for any number of applications your imagination can come up with, although it would take some large cuts and quite a bit of scratchbuilding. I want one stock first. They sell more.
Automatically Appended Next Post: This is as far as you can go before making decisions.
It is a nice looking beast, much better than the Taurox, want both to play orksess with and convert the heck out of. This the Ugly duckling and the silly orktrukk all together. MMM xmas dreams.
Like the look of this stock as well though which is a bonus.
@Theo- I'm thinking it can be a functional Necromunda Vehicle. All sorts of STC Civilian mining equipment would realistically be used and re-purposed wherever possible. I mean they were designed to colonize and strip resources from planets. The parts would be everywhere humans once were.
@Cam- I'm gonna order one of Zinge's half-track kits for the Taurox. I pulled the sprues out and compared them. They are the exact same wheelbase and size. It can be done.
Nice idea with the tracks, It has alot of potential this vehicle. Particularly for an ork players who want a new truck but don't want to scratch build a hole new one.
After watching that bench come together iv'e been on the edge of my seat waiting it to be used Like watching the 1st cut of a cake.
I don't see it as a limo at all, just a civilian utility vehicle that would be fitted with all sorts of work tools. I'll build a proper limo someday It is covered with rivets, but no skulls or aquillas, so the conversion possibilities from this kit are amazing. I think I'm just going to model mine as the mining truck with the rock-crusher, mining laser, and some burly miners with beards ready to feth gak up. That way it can be used as rebels or militia. Game-wise, The Mining laser seems as useful as the lascannon, and for 75 points, having a mobile lascannon to cut armor is always a bonus.
Thanks EDC! I had an ulterior motive when it came to building the space that I haven't yet shared...until now...
Would anyone be interested in watching live streams of building and painting? Since Twitch launched their "creative" channel, I've been thinking about looking into camera positions where the viewer can see a split screen of the actual work, one from close, and maybe one overhead. I'm not sure how practical it would be, but it's an idea. I have a buddy who streams himself building Gundam models.
This German Guy is currently streaming himself painting Tyranids. https://www.twitch.tv/arras_gaming I think a successful twitch stream needs a couple of elements to be interesting though. Among those are humor and great background music. As his stream is in German, I can't tell what he is saying or if he's being funny (Do Germans even have a word for humor?) - J/k
The Music he is playing seems more like dramatic video game music. My stream would be full of Blues, jazz, rock, and soul music.
nope...we germans are all devoid of anything as close as humor...
will be looking into that new "thing"...i am still trying hard to get useful stuff out of youtube for hobby issues^^...so this might be ver my head^^
also...as you stated i see the only real use anytime soon for me for that vehicle...it has a nice brute look to it that goes well with anything really working related...so your theme description is quite fitting... maybe even worth to think about adding a nice squat crew?

some puns and a bit of narrative for the stream i think is needed... then this could go through the roof...
Twitch videos would be toooooooooo modern for me, though if broken up by a segment of video footage from a camera mounted on beans.....you might have me . A dogs eye view of scale terrain.
Yeah Shas, it is a really nice kit. The digital design process is amazing, everything fits together perfectly flush. Very nice. Almost like GW is heading the direction of Japanese Model Companies...or at least taking notice.
Oh totally! I have no Genestealer models at all.

This is the part that most Ork Konverters get excited about- I can't blame them
Jan has a thingy. I have watched a couple of his vids. Would definitely be interested in tuning in. And at least the music sounds interesting. Though you need to be careful, unlicensed use they mute out the music, so you can't just play your record collection. I think, maybe pm Jan, he has it nailed down.
Keep thinking of doing youtube videos as tutorial of my method, not that I'm any thing different or even probably worth watching, but the tutorials I have done the couple people that have looked would benefit from seeing it, a lot of what we do is hard to describe. If a pic says a thousand words, video is millions.
I wife showed me a clip of a dog cam, lab running to the beach, one of the best things I have seen in years, so great. So a weekly featurette of a day in the life of Beans is a must.
So, a new workshop needs at least one new tool right? This is a swivel vice. It has two sets of claws, one with teeth and grooves for rod material (a godsend) the other claws are smooth safe for plastic It swivels around in many different directions to always have your work-piece right where it works best for you. And it has an Anvil on top, I've actually needed one in the past, so it's a nice bonus It cost about $24 from Harbor Freight Tools
Also built some painting jigs from dowel and workbench scrap lumber

2 light coats. It IS supposed to be ancient....
I lurk in like 80% of the threads I follow. There was an orange KB Toys exclusive G2 Devistator. Truly something only a master riveter would be able to pull off....
You've been watching me again haven't you I have made a purchase today........but it will not appear for a long time. I must first reorganize my work area....it will not be as cool as your remodel though
Heh, I got stuck on the yellows for the hazard stripe. I been trying all the different Minitaire yellows, so far Bile is a pale yellow, but not quite "safety" enough for my likes.
And I was a good boy for over a week after release, but I finally bought Civilization VI and it kind of sucked me in. in my first game I learned that Ghandi is the ruthless, unpredictable warmonger, who will pretend he is your friend, then nuke you when you're least expecting it
Lol...well...it sucked me in for sure, but to be honest, wish it had more of a new Vegas kind of vibe....as somehow F4 feels a bit cold and clinical....play it often to blow off steam
Yep, It's a great game, but I miss the elements from the earlier titles too, especially the Karma System. I liked having consequences for your actions.
I figured it was time to check in here. I can figure the reason FO4 feels clinically cold is that the idea is seeping from the Institute which sees the Commonwealth as a giant lab experiment for them Vik. Science!........gone wrong.
Karma system for FO3, and the factions system with some karma in New Vegas, they helped guide you. Here you get to feel like the sole survivor, adrift, making decisions that can be good or bad and left clueless as to what effect until it comes home to roost!
Fall Out must be one of them Kumpewtor games . Maybe when we get the kids an X-box or PS4 for Christmas I'll wind up getting into it......hopefully not as I waste too much time as it is.
On a side note, which system do you guys think would be better? PS4, Xbox, or a wiiu?
I can't recommend any console for Fallout, the PC version is superior in every way, (modding ability wins hands-down) but it does require a specialized graphics card that usually costs about as much as a console. However, others here can help you decide between consoles. We only use our WiiU for the Lego games. I do not understand how to aim effectively without frustration with an analog controller.
You can run a limited number of mods on console versions these days. At least FO4 (and new version of Skyrim).
Theo: PS4 vs Xbone breaks down to what you want out of it, and if you have friends that play on one or the other. PS4 is more of a pure gaming console, and has better specs in many regards (but still way under a hardcore gaming pc). Xbox One is a better multimedia machine, lots of tie ins with other windows devices, cable, general interneting, that kind of stuff. Any console exclusive game like Uncharted or Halo that gets your attention is worth considering too.
I play FO4 on my PC via a free steam account, and the ability to Mod is good, I have now been running around in "Storyteller" power armor with a shoulder cam and desert camo(desert camo that uses solar power while outside in sunlight.)
Theo: As far as the current topic goes (FO4), I would like to point out that Sony have severely limited the modding potential of the PS4 for games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. If you think that you (or your kids) will want to take advantage of mods for those games, I would recommend getting the Xbox... however, If you really want to get the best from gaming with mods, I would recommend a PC.
Beyond that, I can't comment on which of the two consoles is "best", the most up to date console I have is a Wii.
I use quite a list of mods, on PC, for Fallout 4 (~40 mods). But I've recently gone back to Skyrim and been modding that even more than I had previously (58 plugins and counting).
I've gone so far into the rabbit hole of modding I have the creation kit for Fallout 4 and have been building in there too.
Doc is 100% right ^^
The settlement building aspect is MUCH better with mods. There really should've been a multiplayer mode, leading Settler armies on raids to other settlements.....
Hmmm...indeed, it looks unfinished...are the currently orange parts later to be yellowed? That would fix it...but I think the main issue is with the hazard strips...they look odd for their shape and their placement? Why on the fenders? Dunno if I can remember seeing them anywhere there before...
Yeah, we'll revisit that color scheme at a later date. Bottle says Lagoon Blue, I call it Ford Engine Block Blue
relax, it's a base coat, will highlight all the panels up to werewolf grey
A possible alternative to yellow/black hazard stripes on orange may be to try red/white hazard stripes. Bit late now, but keep in mind for the future. No guarantees it'll work, but something to try.
I was thinking about the red/white over the orange...It just never went into the color cup. The future will hold more hazard stripes.
...if there is a future....
There's so many brain dead people running for government you'd think we had a zombie apocalypse going on right now. There will be a future either way. I for one welcome our new labotomized overlords .

Yeah, it's still that way too. I've been busy with outdoor autumn chores and getting ready for Thanksgiving in the US tomorrow, and arranging to get new gutters and spouts put on our house before winter hits us,
although it went from a lovely, sunny 70F day to absolute crap rain and cold LITERALLY overnight, and it has just gotten crappier for a week straight since. I needed the downspouts put on before it rained, Still dry as a bone down here though
There is a subwoofer, speakers, and laptop for the moment. That, and copious amounts of alcohol enabled the entire project from the beginning. I am still looking to source a second turntable for the basement.
The blue is between coats, so it will look quite different. I'm not anywhere near done actually, I just need some solid time to sit and work. I have to work the holiday today, then tomorrow is busy...maybe the weekend...who knows?
well, I had to work on thanksgiving, so we planned on dinner today instead. I bought 2 fresh turkeys 3 days ago, put one in the fridge, one in the freezer for later frying. Ladygeek got the turkey out of the fridge today and it smelled rank! So I took them back to the meat market and got my money back. So still no turkey dinner for us. I told her I'd take her out to dinner. Beware ANYTHING sold as Amish- it's the biggest scam in the Midwest USA. I guess their refrigeration skills are not that great. I remember when I was a teenager and managing a comic store next to a Chinese food place. Their refrigerator went out one day and they unloaded all the cases of chicken onto the back dock....in 100 degree weather. It sat for three days before the landlord forced them to buy their own dumpster and have it all hauled away. Nastiest smell I had encountered up to that point in my life. I also didn't eat there for two weeks....it was my go to lunch for $4 at the time.
@Theo - right....Never trust a turkey with a little beard and suspenders. Funny, we went to the grocery store, and fresh turkeys were on sale super cheap. Like $6!
@Rawson - hey buddy! good to see you here man! That kit has unlimited conversion potential, there is so much you could do with a saw and that kit.

Thank you! Yeah: international move, buying and renovating a house (I feel your pain), and honestly just focusing on other hobbies for a while has kept the projects in their protective cases in the basement. We moved via plane, so a lot of side projects/armies got sold (SM, Tyranids, VC, and Fantasy Chaos). The 104th, my Dwarf army, the =][= war band, and a SM Scout combat patrol project all made it back. I've been lurking a bit around Dakka and the GW site for the last couple months. I recently found a FLGS that runs games, so now I'm quite inspired to get back to it. Hopefully you'll see some updates soon

I made a special trip to the train shop yesterday to see if there were bargains to be had. Sadly they were priced more like GW. They did have some train box cars for $10 each with working sliding doors......
Nice! - Yeah, O scale is not the most common scale, that's why I didnt want to miss the Train Show as it came through town. I don't even think the big train store in town even deals in that scale anymore. Its big with the Lionel Trains enthusiasts.
Yeah the huy looked at me like I was stupid when I asked for O-scale. Then I told him what I was going to do with it........You think if anyone would be enthusiastic about scratch builders it would be train guys. Next time I think I'll wear a conductor hat when I go in and blow my kids toy train whistle the entire time .
No, they just have no idea what gaming is, let alone what terrain is used for. I tried telling the truth before...they looked at me EXACTLY the way they looked at theo
Love the building work as always, Dave. Those 0 scale buildings look more like they were designed at a scale for the necro figs than most of the GW stuff ever did. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
@Red- very true
, but for gaming purposes, an intact building is just a big LOS blocker. but I'll disagree, a ruin forces the modeler to detail the inside too = MORE work
@Scarper- yeah, I've been thinking that too, and that is making me look at kits, and that is making me see the scarcity of them...
Now a real challenge would be a building that appears whole, but can be taken apart to look ruined, in game. Think I might have to have a go, did a ruin like it a while ago, mmm.
As for this, just great seeing you back at it, I have looked at the O scale stuff before, but did not realise it was so perfectly scaled for this. Tends to be expensive is the only thing that has put me off in the past.
It always amazes me the snobbery that developes in society, does not matter where in life, we are the modelling worlds black sheep, military modellers, railroaders all scoff at our silly nonsense, but when you see the majority of work here on Dakka, it is art, wonderful works of art, and even amongst ourselves there is snobbery, I am an ork scratch builder and proud of it, keep your silly Spesh Morons, silly world we live in.
There's all kinds of heresy in your post, Theo'. Good thing I'm a modeller, with an army of heresy, and not a GW space marine uber-fan, or I'd be screaming all kinds of murder about something that doesn't really matter about now.
Just to interject a bit, Dave, what have you used for the filter in your airbrush fumehood? I'm looking at making my own.
@Dr. H - I'm just using the charcoal filter it ships with. If I were to ever play around with laquers, I'd need to switch to a hepa filter and pipe the exhaust outside.
Dakka posted the dumbest thread to facebook yesterday - A Spice Muhreen player, bragging about how he usually always wins, but he played the Guard, and their Stormsword hurt his widdle feewings He advocated GW banning the tank from the game.....it was so....stereotypical

Heh Vik....The Mini Nuke is actually a case for the entire Fallout CD collection, it came out around the time of the first Pip Boy, before Fallout 4 dropped. I'm not sure they made it to scale. I'd need a scale Fat Man to test I missed out on the first Pip-boy, when they announced this one, I got in on it right away.
whalemusic360 wrote:What's the difference between the bluetooth and standard pip boy? I've got the normal one, didn't seem worth an upgrade at a glance.
The mold for the original was broken, it was just a phone case. This one actually has it's own electronics. It boots up when you turn it on, with a little green screen POST screen, it's a bluetooth speaker, so you can pipe "Butcher Pete" through it (which is the very first thing I did with it), it opens and connects over your arm just like the FO4 Pip-boy, the holotape is removeable (and it's secretely a USB drive - coolest feature IMO), you move the knobs and dials to move around the Pip-Boy UI just like in the game. The only knobs/dials that don't actually do anything are the radio dial (although it is lit and moves), the Geiger Counter (for obvious reasons), and the plug in the back that opens the vault door. It IS the ultimate dork toy! Ladygeek was laughing at me pretty hard when I was first playing with it, but she appreciates it
well, d´uh...it only proves you are living in a zero rad zone...atm...
due to printerest i am actually considering making props of fallout...and seducing my wife to sew me a vault overall...(tho here is the bitter pill...i have wearing overalls )
I've seen some great booths built with PC fans, I'm in a German Facebook group Die Modellbau Ecke (Thank dog for google translate) and these guys are 1. BIG into old American car models and 2. VERY creative with these types of projects. Your goal is to move air for acrylics, not necessarily exhaust vapors- if that were the case, you'd need a sealed environment, and a brushless high CFM fan with exhaust.
Yeah, you'll need a far more advanced rig than I built. Beware, your internet searches will be rife with old wives tales about explosions, but no one seems to have ever actually witness this happening.

I had a pic of my new dog removed too. Kind of annoying. Is your dog a Rat Terrier, by chance? She looks an awful lot like one, or possibly a Jack Russell mix.
dsteingass wrote: Yep! She's all Rattie! Crazy dog! What's your little dog?
She's a little Rattie as well. Probably mixed a bit with something else since she's mostly black with white on her chin, neck, belly, and feet. All of her ticking is on her white spots though. My parents also have a male Rat Terrier who spends a lot of time at my place.
I have a Jack Russell Terrier, and if the Rat Terrier is anything like the JRT, oh yes, excellent hunters. I've seen film of JRT's clearing out a barn full of vermin, rats. They are very, uhm, efficient and enthusiastic about it. I bet Rat Terriers would be too. I'm guessing a fairly energetic dog as well.
heh- Yeah, They were specifically bred for rodent control on farms. In fact, the breed was first called the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, as he used them famously to clear the White House of rats 100+ years ago. They don't eat them, they just know it's their job to shake it until it's dead. Bean has gotten several rabbits, voles, chipmunks, and even a squirrel once! The squirrels usually outpace her, one was not as smart as the rest
This is beneficial, as my back yard is FULL of chipmunk burrows, those damn things can make concrete collapse if they tunnel under porches etc.

My JRT has a fair number of rats and mice to her credit. I have bird feeders which sometimes attract the vermin. And the squirrels. She's had one of those. Normally they can make it to the trees. JRTs don't climb. I'm thinking this is a good thing. Better than cats, as pets and as pest controllers, IMHO. I though Chipmunks were arboreal. I never had problems with them. Something wiped out the local chipmunk populations hereabouts. Not sure what.
Oh, I forgot, turntable FTW! Vinyl sounds so much better than mp3s. Not. Even. Close.

Did you know that with the right hammer, done right, you can hit a blob of nitroglycerine without it detonating.
If the face of the hammer has even the slightest of scratches/chips, it will trap a tiny pocket of air which will be compressed, heat up, and detonate the NG. That was an interesting paper.
I was quite pleased with myself, at the time, for including a reference in my report for a certain well-known "cook book".
We also had to do a presentation on our research and I was tempted to bring in a lump of Plasticine with wires stuck in and drop in on the table at the start of mine. But I didn't in the end.

Happy New Year Vik, Dave and rest of the gang.
I'm not seeing the film till it hits Redbox or Dvd .
My son Oskar instantly wanted us to do just that...but we're celebrating new year and so on and my wife can cope with one sw movie a day...more and we get stormy weather
But it is an inevitable feeling to see that one right after...especially after that finishing scene...
Btw how did you find the computer animated characters done? My wife found them obvious...but for me especially that grey haired one was quite convincing...if but a bit stiff in the shoulders...
The one in white was obvious, but a certain Former Governor was given a pretty decent effort considering his numerous scenes. The voice was more off than the CGI to me.
Corrugated cardboard... yeah, not something to use if you want any sort of precision. You'd have to mix and match with other forms of cardstock. I generally avoid the corrugated stuff.
Done right, a scale model of your house would be a worthy display piece for all to see. (That is to say: something for a cabinet in a prominent place in the living room or foyer or wherever.)

QFT We need a scale shop of Dave in his basement while beans is in the yard chasing off zombies/aliens/politicians.
Beautiful curves! And about that who is masters of cardboard...I guess red won that title long ago...not me...but Dave, give him a good run for his money, will ya?...
Thanks for the compliment. Normally I work with just the cardstock, Vik. Cardboard is a mess for most everything except structural stuff... Thing is, I can't stand the smell/fumes of the glues used for plasticard. It's a very useful material though.
Dave, you did not miter the corner? Or rabbet it? I like seeing the WIP on the cutting board. A nice way to show the measurements.
Back to the scale house...adjust the scale to fit whatever you have for the interior walls ( they are usually 4 1/2" thick IRL here in the US.). This saves a lot of head-aches.
The idea behind this rather frustrating practice is to create a stylized Empire half-timbered building, so the cardboard will be the structural base, and all the surface will be covered with Timber frame and Wattle and daub, hopefully strengthening it somewhat. No, angles, I can do that by eye with plastic, but not corrugated. Inside corners will be reinforced, although I still think they will be the weak spot.
It's rather fun though, challenging myself to make it something it's not intended to be.
I also got my rivetite whetted a bit with a couple of bases for a couple of odd Necromunda Sculpts I didnt yet have. Getting these ready for priming now
Fumes? LOL the very FIRST thing I did on my shiny new cutting mat is spill my MFing bottle of PlasticWeld
