Models that have disappeared or been thrown out @ 2013/08/06 03:59:32

Post by: timetowaste85

So, due to a distressing morning, I confronted my friend today about some models that went missing: I had them in a tub of acetone that I left outside to keep her house from smelling up 3 weeks ago. I showed her the tub, told her I was putting it there because of what was in it. Today I couldn't find it, asked her and she admitted she threw it out a week ago, after asking everyone except me whose it was. She forgot that I showed her and actively denied me doing so. In the tub was a Slaanesh CSM Lord, 3-5 OOP Noise Marines, 5 metal SM scouts (weapons unknown, likely snipers) and possibly Ahriman. The response was "sorry." No offer to make up for the models, just "I asked everyone else, nobody knew so I chucked it." I asked if she opened it to even see what was in it, and was asked "Why would I?" I'd put it at about a $60-70 value, tossed in the trash. She was letting me stay at her place while I apartment hunted, and I'm partially considering taking the amount out of what I owe her for electricity for the month. What are your horror stories for lost models? Thankfully mine was fairly small, but it's still a terrible feeling, mostly because quite a few were OOP.

Honestly? She's doing you a solid, and perhaps should have been a bit more apologetic, but I'd suck it up and chalk it down to experience.

I do sympathise though, when I quit at the end of 2nd, I gave my Eldar army to a mate to sell, as he had more gaming buddies than I did.

Never saw him or the models again.

We're talking of thousands of points, all special characters, dreadnought, war walker, 10 Wraithguard, Harlequins, full size squads of all Aspect Warriors, all metal.

That stung a bit

I haven't had any losses so far. But if I was in your situation I would keep 50 bucks and say hey this is what you threw out.

I'm lucky that if something that is miniature related ends up somewhere it shouldn't be it always finds its way back to my shelves.

About 10 years ago, when I still had my first army of white scars, I was in a band with my friends. We practiced in the bassist's garage and this one time I had my army with me. It was about 1500 points, maybe more. At the end of our band practice I forgot to bring my army with me and with it being in a shoe box ended up being thrown away by said bassist's parents. This was when I was in school with no job so couldn't afford to replace the models any time soon. After that I took a break from 40k and discovered girls so it's not all bad

Doing me a "solid" only goes so far...if anything goes slightly wrong in the house (she rents to two others) I get blamed before anyone else (and there's been a bunch), my sister's boyfriend gets parking privileges in the driveway while I have to park down the road (I pay a small rent, he pays nothing), yells at me for playing games on my Xbox because she assumes I'm playing online and hogging the Internet (my gold account is expired and I explained as such that I'm not even online), I get yelled at if I don't put the sponge away before I put the dishes away after washing them (yeah, I wish I was kidding-I'm dead serious), generally don't get thanked for helping out around the house or cooking (got my first thank you tonight since I've been here a month)...it feels pretty close to tyrannical. Sadly, I could go on, but I think that's probably enough venting. I've put up with it because I have no choice while I wait for the new apartment-it's her house, I kinda have to play by her rules. I just don't have to like them. Our friendship will pretty much be null and void once I'm out-even now, I'm only civil at face value. Throwing out my models and giving a shoulder shrug and not even really caring is just the final straw. But, since my choice is living on the street or accepting her crappy rules for another 3 weeks...I'd say my options are limited, no? And trying to discuss these things with her hasn't worked-I've tried to be civil and discuss them, she just raises her voice over mine, whines about how difficult it is having me here with two other people and walks off. Yeah-options are pretty much non-existant. I try to stay out of the house except to sleep.

Wow, this was supposed to be about models that took a hike, not a vent session. Anyways, appreciate anyone who listens.

Just one question, judging from your comments, you'll have been there two months by the time your appt is ready give or take?

If she knew this when she offered, she's a cow and you have my sympathy, if she didn't, I might have a suggestion why she's a bit arsey with you....

There was never a set time for how long I could stay, just that it wouldn't be long-if I was there a few weeks, no issue, no rent. When the first apartment fell through, she said she understood, just asked me to keep trying and she asked if I could pay a small rent, I said no problem and gave it to her early.

This is totally off topic, wanna PM instead?

Sleep on the streets vs Losing $60/$70.
I'd keep calm and carry on if I were you.
Pack what's left your toy soldiers away and put them into storage. Just curl up in a corner for the next few weeks with a good book.
Also i'd shift your X-Box out of the lounge, everyone knows that girls would rather be watching Sex in the City than playing computer games. Even if you do see it as a nice gesture.

Oh yeah, and my FOW Sherman fell down a storm drain the other day. Gone forever.

So, this isn't losing anything, but I did have a warhound titan fall off a shelf once.

There were parts everywhere. It was pretty horrifying.

Let it go, that's my advice. You told someone else that you thought this was offtopic but it's actually pretty central to the discussion you started. These are the kinds of disagreements and situations you get into when you stay at someone else's place, and while she could have been more apologetic, she doesn't owe you money now.

Kanluwen wrote:I had a squirrel steal a limited edition Thunderbolt Pilot.

I also have never understood the motivations of squirrels, and though I'm sure you didn't think so at the time, I hope you now realize that's a pretty funny story.

Squirrels are out to take over the planet. If you know that then their motivation becomes a bit more understandable. They're mocking you...

Back on topic, I was assembling a Khurasan Camain APC and the last wheel fell from my fingers onto the floor. I was doing this in my "mud room" which is my workroom. I keep it clean and the floor is simple concrete. Anyway, I EMPTIED the room of EVERYTHING and still couldn't find that wheel. It simply disappeared.

I blame the squirrels.

Had a friend of mine leave the FLGS at about the same time I did, he had set half his army on the roof of his car in a box and loaded part 2 in his trunk.. (the box on the roof was filled with foam and tanks)...

As we left, I saw he had not removed the box from the top of the car, and was sliding back and forth on the rack..

Since this was "pre-everybody-has-a-cell-phone" days, I couldn't call him and warn him.. so I flashed my lights and honked.

He took that as a challenge to race.

About the time he hit 45 miles an hour, the box parted with his car, bounced off my hood and roof, and got plowed into by the pickup behind me.

EDIT>.. sorry forgot this was not a "how models got trashed" thread..

On topic.. I personnally DID discard a box of stuff that the cats had dumped a gallon of liquid on.. and only after garbage day did I remember that I should have looked inside the box prior to throwing it away.. and.. where did my unbuilt land raider go?

A friend of mine had a Land Raider go missing. Every time we're home on break we do another search of his basement to see if it turns up, but it never does. The only thing I've ever lost is the alternate weapons for my Dark Reaper exarch, which I've only noticed in the past week.

If I were you, I'd "name" my price on priceline and get a hotel for the time you were in-between places.

I did that here in DC, when I sold one place and was waiting to close on another. I could get a month of hotel rooms for less than half of what renting an apartment would run.

My son led an expedition into my game room (he was 15 months at the time and I hadn't put a child proof lock on that room), he and my dog each grabbed a model. The dog got a FW Ultramarine Dread and my son got a FW Eldar Cobra.

I got the Cobra 1st and when I was chasing after the dog, he handed the dread off to my son, whom promptly flushed it. The dog grabbed the Cobra and was chased by my son and I got the legs of the dread out of the toilet and by the time I got to the dog, the Cobra was no longer a model and now a pile of resin with teeth marks.

I spent about a month painting a FW Mk IV venerable dread for the Mrs. army in prep for a tournament the following month. I'd completely finished it and had started to take some photos to show off on the interwebs. Something came up and I left the dread to have his photoshoot postponed to the day after.

Returning from work the next day I discovered to my horror that my 20ish week only puppy had got into my painting/modelling/general stuff room and had completely dismembered the dread and left him in little bits all over the house. Not a single part was salvageable (I still have the pics somewhere).

Gutted is not even close to how I felt.

Gawd, these are horror stories! Squirrels! Dogs eating Forge World! Evil friends who are neat freaks and throw out minis!

Someone start a thread about my little pony, quick.

A friend of mine was moving, and had put a metal gun case (i.e., looks valuable) full of entirely painted blood bowl teams into the car. On his return into the house, he waited too long and someone snatched it! He lost quite a few teams and even though he loves the game, he just never had the stomach to get back into it. Flash forward years, and he's now got his kickstarter of Dreadball, so he feels much better about life.

Another friend had his entire Warmachine Protectorate army in his car, which was stolen. The cops found the car, driving high speed the wrong direction on the freeway, and finally got it back to him (waaaay messed up, he sold it for cheap) but the army was long gone...

Ah, the trageties of life! Makes me almost long for squirrels.

Do not lose your friendship with this person - who hooked you up with a place to stay, probably a lot cheaper than renting with a stranger - over a piddly $70.00 loss. Are you mad, man?! I empathize but your priorities are way messed up in this situation.

One of my friends spent around a week painting a beast men ghorgon. Shortly after he sold it and his army on ebay. A few weeks later he went to gamesday and saw a very suspicious looking ghorgon, which one a prize.

Another guy i know had a case with around 3k O&G in it in the attic which his dad threw out by mistake! His dad offered to reimburse him but he wouldn't tell his dad the price to save him from having a fit.

My old bitz box was thrown out by my mom once. She had no idea what all the plastic crap was and everything looked broken so she tossed the box out when cleaning the basement.

I couldn't rage at her because her reasoning was sound - everything is in pieces and shards and whatnot - I just explained that from now on, she is not to touch the newly labeled 'bitz box' despite everything in there looking broken and shattered. Then I whimpered to myself as I started to rebuild using sprues from some new kits I just grabbed. :(

I don't think that's unlikely at all (unless you're being super pedantic about the meaning of the word "melt"?). Styrene melts at 494F, but starts to warp as early as 170F, and I it's not hard to reach that temperature in a parked vehicle on a hot day, especially in someplace like Arizona; where people bake cookies inside their cars.

In my anecdotal experience, I used to work at a video store, and I had someone attempt to return a pile of black slag and ribbon that used to be a videotape, and my sister left some water bottle in her backseat that looked like an ant after a magnifying glass.

Warp? Sure. Melt, not so much. At those temperatures, paper would be combusting in the car and I find that really unlikely.

I thought this was strange:

Put together a Valkyrie and had the windows off so I could paint the inside.
Lost one.
Could not figure out where it went for couple months.
Actually got upset because I could not figure out a good way to replace it.
Was horrified I was actually upset about a piece of a model missing.
[happy ending] Pretended it never happened after I found the piece in the bottom of the cabinet (back corner covered in dust bunnies).

4 year old son got hold of metal Abbadon model all done, nicely based and painted: to this day he says (grumble) he does not know where it is (7yrs old now).
I bet he brought it outside and the squirrels got it... evil furry fiends.

For all purposes of telling the story, the difference is absolutely pointless, since it does not change the emotional and anecdotal impact.

Needlessly pedantic, and wrong into the bargain.

If the plastic is hot enough to warp from its own weight then it has returned to a plastic state - in short 'melted' Not an extreme case, but the plastic has become soft. One definition of 'melt' is 'to become softened'.

What it did not do was liquify - which as an extreme example of melting.

He did not claim that the monoliths had liquified, merely that they had melted.

And his definition is the correct one in this instance.

The Auld Grump, you wants pedantry? I gots it by da bushel basket.

We had an Apocalypse game at our local gaming store a few years ago . We had advertised it and had a large turn out from several states. It was called 40K at 40K a side. We actually would up at 43K a side. It was huge. There was even two titans....

There were like 10 to 12 tables put together and my collection of Valkyries/ Vultures was not as large as it is now but I remember one or two vultures and 12 Valkyries because I had 12 squads of metal Storm Troopers on them.

It was a long day and night and when my last unit was killed off I packed my stuff, said my goodbys and went home.

I took my stuff out of the car the day after but did not count everything. A week later I realized I had left my box of Stormies in the shop.

They were long gone....

12 Squads of metal Storm Troopers....

I watched eBay for months and never saw them...

Almost 2 years ago I lost 3 new unassembled FW malanthropes< i looked everywhere for them. They went missing in my locked, squirrel proof game room. Last month all three re-emerged from the warp in my primary bits box, still in the bags. I have been in the bits tray repeatedly over the last 2 years, then poof here they are.

I was dipping minis in the backyard at night once. Anyone not familiar with this, it involves sticking the mini on the end of a stick, dipping it in the stain, then spinning the stick really fast to get excess off.

I had a unit of 20 Black Orcs. Being the time constrained idiot I am, after spinning the first couple without a flaw, one flung off the end of the stick into the night. I thought no worries, ill find him in the morning and kept going. At the end of the 20 Orks I was missing 4 that had flung into the darkness (including the musician), come the next day I couldn't find any of them and I spent a good hour looking.

End of story - I now have a unit of 16 Black Orcs minus the Muso haha.

They rode Squirrels to their freedom......

I have had several models disappear and reappear months later. I think space time bends around my collection......

I do have a really good one involving a Transformer toy. I have a shelf with very collectable Transformers on it. One day i bumped the shelf and one fell off the shelf. I freaked cause these are not you run of the mill 13 dollar transformers you get in the toy aisle at Walmart. The come from a Transformer fan convention held every year. These guys are worth some cash. Anyways one fell and I flipped out. I snagged him up to make sure he wasn't broken. Thank good he wasn't. However his missile launcher was missing. There was a bag of trash from cleaning the room, two laundry hampers, and 2 boxes near where it fell. I searched through EVERYTHING. Could not find it at all. I freaked to the point i called the company that hosts the convention to see if I could get a replacement. They said as another convention was coming up it could take a few months before they could check they spare parts for one. Well the months go by and then my wife walks in and ask if I was looking for this.... It was the missile launcher. Turns out she found it in the laundry hamper we keep towels in. I still do not believe it as we must have done 6 to 10 loads of towels in the few months that passed and I know I went through the basket twice the day it fell. I called the company back and let them know, They said they where about to mail out the piece....... Odd how that happens........ Warp powered space squirrels strike again......

EDIT:All typos are also the work of the evil squirrel empire.

Warp? Sure. Melt, not so much. At those temperatures, paper would be combusting in the car and I find that really unlikely.

I dunno where you live, but out here in CA the interior of your car gets to temperatures to completely warp plastic figures. Not melt into a pool of plastic, but to make them nearly unusable.

Oh God I'm seeing the start of a new meme forming here...

Don't recall losing any of my own minis, just some dice. One of my brothers lost his Space Marine Commander that he'd built with the commander and veterans box at my cousin's house. We searched everywhere and couldn't find it. The loss left him pretty bummed out about 40k and is basically the reason why he quit...

When I was a school-child I very naively brought my small tyranid army to a LGS to sell on my behalf (they had a sale or return policy, took 30%). When I went back to see how they were selling, the shop had closed down and gone

Oh man. I had something like that happen too; that sucks really bad. It wasn't warhams though, it was some crappy jewelry I had made.

Alright so my dissapearing/destroyed/throw out story? 2006, Freshman year of college i share a dorm suite with nine other guys, unfortunately for me, all the jock/stoner mentality. I had a 2000 point space marine list at the time that i had in my room. the carry case went missing one day. I started tearing around the room.. nope not there. Cant find it.. maybe its in my car? nope not there.. about a week goes by and as im coming back from class one afternoon, theres the case, hinges ripped open dumped out in the middle of the common room. all the marine's inside? crushed, stamped on, ripped apart.. And worst of all? Not a damn thing that i could do about it. the RA's for my dorm? Their in there nightly smoking pot with the ones who did it.

Well the plus side of it? Went i went down to the at the time, local GW and let them know what happened to my stuff, The mannager at the time told me pick out some stuff, %50 off total price, and a free metal command squad. I miss guys like that.. then again.. that could be part of the reason that shop closed down two years later..

No kidding, My wife has a heart filled with murder that is best satiated elextronically, lest she take it out on me and the cats.

I've been painting for about 25 years now, so have lost/broken/had stolen tons of minis. One of the cats managed to crash over a display case, wall anchor and all, resulting in significant damage to the models I considered my best work. Its just stuff. It kind of matters, but in the end, less than you think.

I might have a talk w your friend, and indicate that she hurt your feelings/upset you with her with her nonconcern if you plan on hanging out with them after you move. Petty things have a habit of festering.

Mom accidentally dropped my pro-painted and nicely based CSM Terminator Lord (The one that looks like he's flipping the bird due to the long middle claw) in the trash when I was visiting them. Admits to moving stuff while taking out the trash in that room, and realized when I asked her about it what had happened. Was pretty bummed.

On topic; I hobby in my living room, it has a hard floor. Every bit I drop bouncers and disappears into no where. Its just something I've come to expect.

Off topic; You move into a mates place for a couple of weeks, turns into a couple of months. Spread all your hobby crap out and hog the TV with your Xbox. Then act surprised when she becomes less then amenable. Does that about sum it up?

Maybe pack your crap up until you find somewhere to live and remember whether your helping with the rent or not she is doing you a favour and you are the inconvenience.

At the moment you sound like a ungrateful and stroppy teenager.

I mean seriously suck it up. Are you really going to sacrifice the friendship, of someone willing to put you up, over $60 of accidental binned toys, having to walk down the street to get to your car and getting blamed for some things that weren't your fault.

If I was your mate reading this I'd tell you to go sleep in your fething car.

Uh...try reading the full post, you summed up pretty incorrectly. My Xbox is attached to my tv in the basement. Isn't even near anything, completely out of the way: she misunderstood that it being on did not mean it was stealing connection speed, as I only had it up for DVDs. So that was incorrect. As for the models, I have a couple things on my dresser downstairs, again, nothing near her stuff or in her way. There was a 3" container outside the house to keep from stinking it up due to acetone (=courteous, not disrespectful). She threw it out after I gave her the heads up what it was. If it was only the models, I'd agree I was being petty. It's been a collection of different things, the models are just the latest thing. But thanks for the insulting statement that proves you only got part of it.

And PS: the bs started 2 days after I got in. Has nothing to do with being ungrateful, it has everything to do with being sick of being blamed for everything.

Basically, the problem I have with your opinion is you think since my friend did me a favor, she can treat me however she'd like. I don't expect to be treated like a king, but I also don't expect to get treated like crap.

I had bought 2 boxes of Nobz 2 years ago, while visiting my grandparents for the weekend. I had brought all the stuff I needed to assemble them, so I got to it right away. By the time I left, I only had seven left. I was a bit bummed, but I still had a workable unit. Funnily enough, those three Nobz turned up on a shelf in their shed a couple of months ago. Covered in dust, but completely intact.

I've stashed my stuff pretty well over the years but two things stick in my mind.

My Chainsaw Warrior model that I used as my IG Colonel has disappeared, probably in my last move 6-7 years ago. I genuinely miss that feller. I've pondered getting another from eBay but it wouldn't be the same.

I've also lost a copy of the original Mighty Empires boxed game. The rule book turned up but I last saw the box and components about 15+ years ago, it certainly never left my parents home by may hand. Occasionally I find a cardboard hex tile in a random model box. I fancy my Mum sold it at a car boot sale or it could have been..........

Allright, this was 2009. I had a about a 3500 point space marine army, and i did´nt want to play Space Marines any more. So i asked my mom if she would store the army at grandmas. Because we were putting alot of boxes(Old clothes and such) in her basement.
Recently i took a look for the army, it´s impossible to find.

My 2250pt Descent of Angels BA list went missing when I was building a game board in my fraternity house. They turned up a few months later in an employee's locker at my school... They stole it, probably thinking it was a gun (it was in a Plano gun case ) and never did anything with it once they found out there was no gun.

I then sold that army to WarOne.

Personally I have only 'lost' one model so far, but the story is a little odd considering how it happened. Put simply my friends and I were playing a 40k apocalypse game about 3 years ago and part way through the game one of my dead Necrons went missing from underneath the vortex grenade template (not sure why we put it underneath in the first place). Anyway, we shrugged it off until the game ended assuming it would turn up elsewhere and started packing away everything.

It's at this point one of my friends discovers one of his devilfish is rattling. That may not seem odd until we remembered it was completely sealed up, with no way for anything to get in aside from a small hole on the roof which would be too small for a model to fit through. Turns out my Necron had somehow ended up inside the devilfish with no logical explanation of how it had occurred. Only last week did I finally get the 'lost' model back when he took the tank apart.

So I have only two possible theories of how this happened, firstly the vortex grenade template displaces anything underneath it (dice have vanished from it before). Or, squirrels. Could be either

I have had a space marine scout squad go missing before. We were playing a game, and they got blown to bits, and then the worst happened table flip. (the corner leg of the table broke off) The scouts vanished. We picked up all the models and recovered 99% of them.

four scout models were missing in the fray. Over the next two years I find them in my house as they turn up. Each one was next to a dead mouse. I blame squirrels.

Are you sure it wasn't a wormhole template?

Nah, its a Classic secret squirrel manoeuvre!

Regardless of her bad behavior, you've got no leverage and she's got you over a barrel. Go ahead and deduct the cash from what you pay her, but only if:

1) You're about to move out. It's not worth risking getting kicked onto the street if you don't have a place to go.
2) You've already got your valuables moved out. She might grab some of your stuff if you don't pay, and in that situation, you will never see your stuff again.

Good luck getting out of there.

My own story is twenty years old now - my entire collection of miniatures was stolen - I thought that I knew who had stolen them, but I had no proof.

A few years later the person's mom was having a yard sale, and the sign said 'games, toys, D&D' - so I went and had a look.

Sure enough, there was my miniatures collection, somewhat the worse for wear.

She was selling the entire collection for $5.... so I bought it, then told her that her son had stolen the miniatures from me.

Turned out that she was selling his stuff because he was in jail over drug charges - she offered me my $5 back, but I told her 'no, keep the money - don't tell him that I am the one that bought them.... But do tell him how much you sold them for.'

The Auld Grump, some of those miniatures were already ten years old when he stole them....

Quick update: my friend and I had an hour long talk. Feelings have been expressed, it's been dealt with as adults and we're good. I'm not doing anything about the models: gak happens. Lets now keep this thread only to lost models, and we can leave my venting alone, as all is now good.

I lost 14 cadians a couple of weeks ago from my room whule i was building my army for a GT. At first it was 9 and then 3 and then 2. Idk if my son took them or if my lady threw them out frim spite of me still playing 40k. I also have about 50 marines whose arms and legs were snapped off on purpose. Good thing is i can just glue them back on.

HAHAHAHAHA I almost shot soda through my nose when I read this. Just the image of the cheeky magpie making off with a marine.....

I did foolishly throw out a Warhammer Quest Witch Hunter because my (at the time) under-devloped painting skills just mangled the model...and it would be decades later until I would discover this precious fluid called "LA's Totally Awesome".

However, karma has been kind to me as a friend moved away after high school and he bequeathed to me a plethora of RT era marines (THE FOOL).

After second break their was a grey-blue smudge near where I eat lunch( on my own). This dill weed took it when it fell out of my pocket and stomped on it seventeen times, I swear everytime he stomped my heart was stabbed by a power sword. models i've lost... my dog once thought that my lascannon razorback would make a great chew toy, just in time for a tourney... luckily the TO felt my pain and would allow it once I showed him the lascannon turret in about 5 or 6 pieces.

My wife an I also swear that the cats in the house have a secret warhammer game going somewhere in the house... models go missing all the time, and in the middle of the night, we hear the sound of dice being rolled.

That sucks :| When I started it was a friend who got me into it, then I came back to it years later when I'd already left high school.

I've lost very little fortunately; one of my nightbringer's arms when I was moving my painting table to the other side of the room, and a heavy destroyer that wasn't in the box with every single other model I had when I picked up the game years later. I have 3 destroyers now and was going to convert one to heavy, but then my dog chewed up the heavy gauss cannon. At least the heavy gauss cannon is salvageable for ruins!

Well, when we've seen the cats batting around dice out of boredom, pick up the dice in thier mouths, bring them up the stairs, and then chase them down said stairs.

As of late, I keep my gaming table out with terrain and everything ready to go. so it's not too unreasonable that they would.

Never saw him or the models again.

We're talking of thousands of points, all special characters, dreadnought, war walker, 10 Wraithguard, Harlequins, full size squads of all Aspect Warriors, all metal.

That stung a bit

Back in my first phase of GW ownership in my early teens, about 1990 to 1995 or so, I had a huge Ork Epic army, along with the obligatory Space Marine, Titan Legions and supplement box sets. These all disappeared to the charity shop that my gran used to volunteer in sometime around the time I started my A-Levels and lost interest in gaming. Doubtless they all sold for barely a couple of quid. My heart breaks when I think of that army, mainly because a) it was fully painted by clan and Gargant and b) I recently bought all of that old Epic stuff back so I can appreciate what it is worth now in pure monetary terms.

My story is much like this. A old friend moved back to town and became interested in 40k. He was interested in CSM so I let him barrow my army. I didn't have a problem with it seeing we've been friends since we were kids and they weren't that far away. Some time after that he just stopped talking to me and disappeared off the face of the earth. I went to his house and acted like he wasn't there. I finally caught him leaving and I asked for my stuff back. Turns out he just threw out, his reason? Because he was done being friends.

Over the years I've lost plenty of things due to my own stupidity or acts of god.

Fully painted landraider? Thrown at a concrete wall during an argument.

Sisters of battle sister superior? Smashed with hammer.

Tyranid army? Lost to the sands of time.

Dire Avenger set? Lost just after buying codex?! Roommate found it on the living room floor....

Shows how often I go into that side of the apartment!

I would dearly love to show her your post and watch you get your ass thrown out on the street while I watch with an massive justice fueled boner.

Erm...timetowaste85 has said its sorted at least twice and to stay on topic....Do try to keep up

A friend was painting sternguard at mine - he'd undercoated them. Took them outside in a box, dropped them and all the weapons broke off and spun away into the darkness/gutter. We found some.

My worst (not 40k) was realising that the tv remote had disappeared (tv had one button - on/off so I kinda needed it) and the only place it could have gone was the bin. My wife had emptied the bin.
We lived in a block of flats - it wasn't collection day, so I knew it would still be there. There were 18 full bin bags in the communal bin/skip.
My remote was in the 18th.
My wife said - its funny how things are all in the last place you look.

To quote Lee Evans 'Well I wouldn't find it...and then carry on FETHING LOOKING!'

Thanks for helping point out that it's taken care of. Some other posters have reading comprehension issues.

If people don't stay on topic (models thrown out/lost), I'll request a MOD perform exterminatus on the thread. Last time I'm requesting stay on topic.

I have a friend I painted a model for. Was one of my best pieces. Some female sorcerer model. I forget what range, Anyways He had it in his display cabinet. One day it disappeared. He hunted for months for it. About the time he gave up hope on it he saw his daughter with it. Turned out she wanted to model as a guest at her tea parties.

My buddy, who at the time was the sales manager for gw on the eastcoast, played Salamanders. He had 10-15 land raiders in his army sitting on a self. At some point he got into a argument with his crazy gf. He left the house to spend some at the bar.

While he was gone his gf went into his game room with a frying pan and proceeded to demolish all of the land raiders.

He was able to recover three with extensive battle damage.

Me on the other hand, I've lost about about 5k in models due to theft over the years. But it happens.

I threw away a bunch of tannhauser minis I had sitting around today when I was cleaning. I don't know why I had them still (I don't have the game) and the scale was too large to be used for anything else.

So in the trash bin they went!!

My original Praetorian army went missing when my Mum moved house (along with other, less valuable models). All I have left is a lascannon team and 3 casualty models.

I lost a AOBR terminator. I am deciding whether to convert the rest of the squad to Librarians in a fun project or to suck it up and plonk down 10 bucks for a metal blister pack.

Why not sell them or give them to someone who likes the game?

I was in the process of painting my 10 GK paladins. They were all pretty much done and sitting on my desk. My cats tail hit one and it fell to the floor - breaking off a sword arm in the process.

I've never found that arm..... I have hardwood floors and there isn't anything under my bed. It isn't too big a deal since there are plenty my arms left on the sprue..... but just a big mystery.

That was a few months ago and I still haven't bothered to paint up a new sword arm - can't be bothered lol.

Honestly, because selling them is a huge pain in the ass. I eBay crap occasionally, and have TRIED to used the Swap Shop, but selling stuff online and then shipping it is often more hassle than it's worth. For these tannhauser figures, that was really the case.

I've thrown a bunch of stuff out this past year simply because It was too much of a pain to put it up for sale.

In the late 90s I was a teenager living on my own for the first time. I had a ramen-and-microwave-pizzas kind of budget, and went and got into Warhammer 40k.

My space marine army consisted of the contents of the 2nd edition starter box, but I really wanted Terminators, as they were pure dynomite under 2nd edition rules. The boxes were still $50 for five, and that seemed crazy. Instead, I saved my pennies and bought a 2nd edition copy of Space Hulk. It had a mountain of Genestealers, and two full five man Terminator squads - practically a whole army themselves by the rules of those days.

I lovingly painted them up as Ultramarines. Then, I took them to one game. And on return, I was missing two of the basic tactical terminators with storm bolters.

In retrospect, two terminators is nothing to worry about. Even metal, that was $20 lost - I've bought and sold whole armies, so losing two lousy terminators shouldn't keep me up. But they were so expensive, and so rare, and so precious... I turned things upside down trying to find them, but they never did turn up.

I've built and painted numerous armies all over the 40k spectrum since, but 16 years later, in my bitz box still sits an unloved terminator sarge and heavy flamer in crude 1990s candy-colored Ultramarines livery. Their one surviving tactical buddy was folded into a different army with new colors, but I never found a home for the others. And, although I now have 15 Blood Angel terminators, when ever I open the bitz box and see that flamer and sarg, I still smart for losing the other two, and wonder again what happened to them.

Do what I usually do - post a swap shop thread and then link it in your sig. I've made hundreds of bucks in the past few months for things I could have thrown away, and I'm happy with the few minutes of effort and the other people are happy for the deal they got. I leave the funds in my paypal and forget about it then next time I'm ordering something I go to pay and remember I made some cash, and then whatever I'm buying is basically "free" lol.

Or bring the figs to your FLGS and see if they'll sell them on commission (even if they make like 5 bucks for you, that's 5 bucks to spend next time you come into the store) or just give ask the store if you can give them away, maybe to some new gamers that can't afford much. One of my early purchases back in the early 90's was some dude's box of 40k stuff for ten dollars (he was gonna throw it away!) but in that box was some land raiders, rhinos, about 50 beakie marines, land speeders, all kinds of stuff. Insta army, helped me get started.

There's a box, or maybe a couple of boxes, somewhere, in storage, that has up to three Armorcast Warhounds, and 1 or 2 Armorcast Reaver titans. Also some Armorcast/Forgeworld (original US-based Forgeworld who sold licanced GW stuff, not the more recent GW subsidiary) Tyranid stuff - some crab-clawed thing, mycetic(sp?) spore(s?), Khorne Cauldron of Blood, and.. possibly some other stuff.

Also, many of my old codices and WDs, Warzone 1st ed books, and so forth.

Yeah, seriously. Throwing away minis should be a crime. You could have put up a 'send me $10 for postage and they are yours' post in the Swap Shop and it would have been gone in 10 minutes. Shameful.

I guess it's shameful? I mean, today $10 might not even cover postage and gas to get there. That's part of my point; Its easier for me to just toss em then to go thru that hassle, especially since I've had little luck selling anything on Swap Shop.

Honestly, I usually throw in extras of stuff I want to get rid of when I do sell stuff on ebay, but like I said, too often for me the hassle isnt worth it.

Okay, make it $20. The point is that throwing away something valuable just because you don't want to be arsed to deal with it is just wasteful. There, perhaps that's a better word than shameful. Not to mention that you don't even have to leave your house to mail things anymore. USPS allows priority postage to be printed and put in your mailbox for the mailman.

As for not being able to sell on the Swap Shop, that's all about having pictures, good descriptions and being responsive to PMs. I've sold TONS of stuff on SS/Bartertown/Local forums and it has never been a problem.

I mean, we could go around in circles here for days. Maybe it's wasteful, I don't know, but I certainly don't feel any shame over it.

But, for your peace of mind, I'll try not to throw too much away when I do some cleaning this afternoon

If you feel tempted, ship it to me. (Depending on what it is, I'm more than likely serious.)

I put about 100 mantic elves in the recycling bin (I called the recycling centre to make sure they'd take them first). I gave painting 10-20 of them twice before I decided that the world was better off with them being made into a bucket or a bag or something. I had gotten them at 75% off retail, so I didn't feel too bad about it.

As for "You should have given them away!" I think reusing the plastic for a mop bucket (or whatever form they spend their next life in) was better for everyone.

Frozenwastes, I would have taken them. Seriously. If you got them at 75% off, I would have paid you back the full 25% you actually paid.

I was disappointed by them and tried more than once to paint them up in a way that I'd want them in my collection. The value of them being gone *in that moment* was worth more to me than being reimbursed for the small amount of money I put into them.

I get that other people like them. I liked them at first as well. Now I think I did everyone a service by having them transformed into whatever it is they use recycled plastic to make.

Also, shipping from my location to the US would have been around $35, $50 if I wanted Paypal seller protection through tracking.
