Good evening ladies and gents, I am here to announce to you all the exciting news that the 2nd annual Nerdcademy award is being launched right here, right now last year it was fondly named the 'Golden Nerdfest' and the magazines rated it thus:
" simply mind blowing we loved it" - Horse & Hound
" A visual feast for the senses & truly inspirational" - Quilting weekly
" Our lawyers will be contacting you" - White dwarf
" nice work but needed more floral arranging" - Peonies Digest
Well, there we have it! a stonking great review from last year and this time it shall be BIGGER BETTER & more full of FUN than ever before so without further adieu.....
This year the theme is something close to my heart, FACES yes, the bane of painters everywhere, but this is why i chose it I was taught to push the boundaries of what i feel comfortable doing and make myself research and learn new techniques by a friend and fellow painter who encouraged me to keep going and not quit when i thought I was never going to improve! and now i love painting those bare heads and faces from everything from marines to Orks! so thank you Tom for all your help!
So, now we know the basic theme, lets see what you do with it get creative! get clever, get painting, your entry can have as many faces as you like, can be a single mini or a small diorama on a 60mm base, it can have any other race you like but it still must include a human bare head somewhere in the entry. The competition shall run from 9th September 2013 until midnight on the 9th October 2013!
My juices are flowing but do I have the time... We shall see!
Good man for running this, Nerd and also thanks to the judges who stepped up. I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can come up with something that I can finish in time.
I have a great idea... though I stand NO chance given the quality of face-painters that have already entered.
Question for you Nerdy: Does it have to be a human face as you describe, or could it be an elf, dwarf or even something a bit farther out like an ork or ogre?

Gits, don't underestimate yourself... Get to work !!
I also asked Nerdfest about that "HUMAN-only" feature of the competition... And I definitely think it would be better to allow all kinds of faces, as long as they're expressive !
Be they Ogres, Minotaurs, Daemons, Elves, Squats, whatever...
But I leave it up to the Comp Organiser to decide !
Don't know if this helps you Gits, but having actually reread the post Nerd did say: 'it can have any other race you like but it still must include a human bare head somewhere in the entry'

No way! I'm in it it for laughs, you're a competition winning machine! Don't underestimate yourself pal.
I'd like an answer to Git's question too. I haven't settled on an idea yet but I'd like the option to work on another race just in case. However, if Nerdy says no that's cool too, I'm easy going and I haven't started yet.

Did you read the instructions, or have they been updated since? As many heads as you like of any race, but there has to be 1 bare human head in there somewhere.

I'm not sure I like the implication. Yes I did read the rules. In fact i read the entire OP, shock horror, including the part where Damo encouraged us to ask questions because the rules may require fine tuning. I think Git's question clearly has value and I wanted to make my interest in the answer known.

Apologies, I should have worded that differently. My intent was to draw attention to the rules, hence I wasn't sure if they had bee updated which might be why you had missed the relevant section.
Wow great interest so far guys! and no need to argue this is a place of harmony & love! and Bolters & Heretics & scantily clad sisters of Battle.....
lets address the concerns that have arisen shall we?
O.k I would like all entrants to PM with a conformation of their entry into the comp as it can be easy to miss throughout the posts
an image of the constituent parts posted in this thread before painting so we can see you before paint begins, if some parts are scavenged or primed from other parts in your bits box that's o.k but the completed model must be primed and painted as a blank canvas please.
the main concern is FACES, o.k I can see it may impede some from entering and that's why I thought i'd say any races faces can be included but a human face must be there somewhere it can be on the base, it can be a skun face hanging from a belt but I really want to see people try and paint one, if it appears after a day or two that it's too constricting then I may re evaluate that part, but the Faces are the theme, and as I say "Faces are the window to the soul.....and Face"
lets all have some fun with this comp this year! think left of center and push yourself, also remember it's a competition piece and doesn't have to confirm to any standard gaming rules! also I encourage us to work together and pump each other up and if something doesn't sound right or, like I said, needs fine tuning then please bring it to my attention and we'll sort it out as soon as we can eh!
Flinty wrote: Apologies, I should have worded that differently. My intent was to draw attention to the rules, hence I wasn't sure if they had bee updated which might be why you had missed the relevant section.
Thanks, I understand you didn't mean anything by it and you have my apologies too. Looking back I was a bit quick on the draw to get offended and I shouldn't have blasted you in any case. Sorry mate.
Nerdy that all sounds grand! I have an idea I think but I haven't chosen a subject yet. Will require a little further musing... Is it 40k only? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere.
Casey, it seems now that there are so many great miniature companies out there it would be a shame to limit the models, I would prefer 40K models but I'm not going to ask people to buy anything especially for the comp and they can feel free to use what they have as long as it's 28mm scale :-)
2. Post a picture (or more) of their undercoated entry in this very thread ; (undercoat can be any colour, white, black, grey... any single colour should do, as long as it's clear it's not a basecoat - if there are concerns, feel free to PM any of the aforementioned judges who will sort it out).
3. Entry can be anything, any system, any brand, but somewhere it MUST include, at least, a HUMAN - BARE - FACE (that should, ideally, be a focal point). Hence the theme of the competition : FACES ! (again, PM a judge if in doubt)
Spoiler:
On second thought, I second nerdfest09 in that faces are hard to paint, but what's the point in a challenge if there is no challenge ?!? Try and consider that a good way to improve your skills !
I think it should all push you to greater heights !! You only have to spend some efforts on ONE face to submit... Why not give yourself a treat & try ?!? And, as he said, human faces are the starting point to all other faces... If you can master one, then the others are just the same in a different palette !
And that's how Damo's contest turns into World painting championship !
I have a project to finish first (see my P&M blog ^^ ), and then I start my entry. I hope it won't take too long before I start the assembly of my miniature.
I love the challenge, so I decided to paint a FEMALE model. 'cause female faces are so much more difficult to paint than men's ones.
Yup, french people can paint too. Or at least they try.

Am in the middle of a move at the moment which wont actually wrap up till about the 17thish so I cant place an order for my entry yet. If I can get moved in, get my order delivered in time AND find my brushes after the move I'll be in.
Work in progress are more than fine! we gotta keep the excitement palpable in the thread! :-) and by the looks of things so far, you'll certainly meet the bare head criteria lol!

I'm in! Also, can I give you a standing ovation for the magazine remark regarding white dwarf. Just picture you on a stage, addressing a whole bunch of GW executives, and me. I'm the only one who stands up, but i'm damn impressed. Had me laughing for sure. I'll get some stuff going asap!
Casey's Law wrote: Yeh I haven't sent a pm yet but I'm 90% confirmed. I'll pm when I know I have a subject to paint. Actually, do I pm all 4 of you? That's how it reads.
Also are we tied to 28mm? I'm glad you said that because I was about to start something larger.
No, you don't have to pm all 4 of us. What scale were you considering?
Casey's Law wrote: I was considering sculpting a bust at like 1/6 or something but that's cool. I'll put my thinking cap back on.
You could do that and have them fiddling with a 28mm scale model with a bare human head (although if the bust was 1/6 scale, the human wouldn't be 28mm scale to them... *brainsplode*)
tomcat31 wrote: Lol. Looking at the competition I don't have a chance anyway, ah well it's all experience.
Youd be surprised at how much you improve when you REALLY push your skills. I entered Damos contest last year and I tried all sorts of things I never tried before painting wise. I can actually wetblend paint now! Thats a good skill right there Just push yourself and try your best. Cant ask for anything more

Seconded !!!
As I said earlier, tomcat31, that kind of competition is really a good way to improve your skills !!!
Snrub wrote: Eddy that is a kick arse sniper. I like the base too. Where's it from?
to all those who like my conversion, thank you, and stay clear of crosshairs - the base is actually part of the Citadel 40k basing kit that I got for this sort of project (badass conversions that need a good base)
Also any ideas for camo? its going to be grey and black urban but I don't know what pattern yet...
Ye its the new tactical squad, loving these new releases!
And snrub
I would never betray my Ultramarines by painting another chapter , it's just dark because I haven't highlgihted yet

Oh it so totally is blue... I'm blind as a friggin bat.
Looked at it and thought it was purple, which i thought was strange since your avatar is clearly an Ultra. And the link in your sig as well as the rather hefty amount of Ultramarine pics in your gallery would also lend weight to the fact that you collect Ultras and not Hawk lords.
Are you for cereal Snrub? He looks blue as can be to me haha yes, seriously pissed and a bit lazy eyed, but I have since fixed that issue, now he just looks seriously pissed >
Nah i'm pulling ya leg. He's starting to look like an Ultramarine now. It's a nice blue too.
Speaking of cereal, i think i'll have cocopops for lunch today.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's my "bitz" shot/s. Gonna prime him tomorrow.
Bitz used are...
Spoiler:
Leman Russ tank commander head/legs/right arm.
Cadian Command squad body.
Catachan Command squad sword.
Cadian shock troops chainsword hand. (only the hand.)
and i'm not sure where the left arm is from. It has no shoulder pad so i think it's also from the leman russ kit.
Nice updates guys! still plenty of time to enter, doesn't finish until the 9th of October :-) and Vik that model is fine i'd love to have yo onboard, just shoot me a PM with your request for entry and I'll put you on the list!
LDP/tomcat31: both classy work! good thought put into the Iron Warrior model and LDP can't get crisper paint than that dude! smooooth!
Sorry guys, my multi headed daemon hand thing from earlier isn't working out, the body I was going to use with the hands has got lost in the post, damn you royal mail, so would it be ok if I enter this guy instead nerd? I am aware he has a hood so isn't exactly 'bare head'
Just working on some rules for this guy now so far it has been a lot of fun and forced me to venture into the world of faces, good luck to everyone on this and I'll be around all week *leaves stage with a sweeping bow*
^Flinty got it right there, Tau are fine but somewhere you need a human head in your entry ;-)
and seeing as some are close to or finished, i'll put the next part up now, when you have completed your entry and are happy to submit it, please take some good pics (or the best you are able to get) and email them to me with your Dakka name so i can compile them together and post them up at the end! you can reach me at hondaboy999@hotmail.com I know, I know, I've had that address since I was 17! and now....i'm not 17 :-)
As you went unanswered j-paint, I'll say yes. Just keep in mind the face is a specific part of the grade, and if there isnt much visible, we have to grade what is much more critically. Not that you still wont nail it, but it is worth a mention.
Ok I am in my new place now and got my sternguard kit so will be entering. Will send the proper entry pm and post up Wip pics tomorrow when my internet is fitted.
I decided to do a chapter master for my Thousand Sons so took some references from the new GW Master of Relics and (imho) made something far more dynamic looking.
Not sure I am finished adding bits to him yet but you all get the general idea.
Shall I post an undercoated pic on this thread as well or will this in all it's resiny goodness suffice?
Oops, yeah that's a typo, he will be a Company master. Or rather, Fellowship master as that is how 1K Sons divide up their ranks. I get a little confused at times!
Yay, more parts for the Dakka paint machine! :-) good to meet you Boltgun_billy and good luck! I recieved your email as well as tomcat's so it's all good! some interesting models already popping up here, I like the head swap on the TT model, nice choice for something different!
I'm thinking of entering and I've already nearly finished what I would call my entry, but I am wondering - are Salamanders acceptable? Considering they are pitch black skin and I'm not sure how easily their faces are painted compared to the normal white or african tones people tend to do, I don't know if it would be frowned upon/mocked?
From a judging stand point, I can tell you there are going to be some categories you will not score well on (from me at least) due to the loophole nature of it. While meeting the rules of the competition, it doesn't meet with the spirt very well. That said, if its all you've got, it's better than nought. Though I'd suggest it might be an amazing chance to start on an allied IG or other SM chapter force (or any other human figure).
The adherence to theme would be the biggest. Overall effect (aka the judges opinion of the model) would also be affected to a degree. Not saying you shouldn't enter, just that you should go in with those expectations. Also this is all imo, other judges may feel differently.
Hi warpig, Whalemusic is right, you most certainly can paint a sallie for the comp but it would be a double edged sword if it's done well it could be simply awesome and different but if it falls short he'll just looked a little over cooked saying that it would be a chance for you to try and push your painting which is what this is all about that, and hanging out with mates eh! this is a sallie face I have done that may inspire you to have a go?
She'd make an awesome Inquisitor/Sister of battle. Or with a bit of work a killer looking Arbites Judge.
I'll be starting work on my own paintjob tomorrow. I've fallen days behind the everyone else because i was house sitting for a friend. (Stupid friends and their stupid vactions. Stupid pets that need to be fedand valuables that need to be not stolen. Like anyone cares. Or like i've got better stuff to do anyway. *grumble grumble*)
It's a model from WarForge (their products can be found here http://eurobitz.com/ ). Their second miniature, the first one is a female commissar that you can see in my gallery. This one was sculpted by Graphigaut. Maybe you don't know his name, but he entered an amazing Sister Of Battle at french GD last year, based on the dark elves sorceress :
(@ Mods : I hope this is not considered as undesired advert' )
I've seen that model, but only from the company. How was the mold, as far as details and casting issues? Any chance of a pic next to a space marine at some point?
@ Whalemusic : I'll do comparative shots. I'll post them in my P&M blog, in order to not turn Nerdfest's topic into mine. ^^ No particular molding problem on my copies, neither on Viktoria nor on Alicia. On Alicia, there are 2 (tiny) bubbles in her hair that were easily filled with liquid green stuff. The mace was also bent a little bit, but this is a classical defect on such long and fine parts. Details are... crazy. I have no idea how I'll paint her so far !
@ Srnub : I bought both versions. The metal one is pretty nice, but the resin version has finer details wich is normal I guess. If you want it to paint, take the resin version. If you are rather a gamer instead of a pure painter, I'd recommend the metal one wich is less likely to break.
If you have more question, no problem, but ask me on my topic instead (link in my sig )
Thanks Minus, useful to know. To be honest i'm not even sure why i even asked you that. I don't know why i thought you'd have both of them... Lucky for me you did.
Righty-o. Here's my entry in the basecoat stage. I'm really not happy with the green. It's meant to be far more Karki. I've also noticed a few things that need to be touched up. As well as getting rid of that hidious thing of his face.
The pic should be zoomable in the gallery but for some reason it's not. Oh well.
My word people! you have been busy looking good guys i'm pretty pumped to see everyone's models together on here at the end, it'll be a wicked cool post for people to scroll through
Aaaaaaaaaaaand!........ THIRD PLACE IS HERE!
yes, finally the much sought after 3rd prize has been revealed after long sleepless nights of trying to work out the most ridiculous thing i can possibly offer anyone! ................

@Nerdfest and Whalemusic - I don't expect to place or win, but I'll do it simply for the giggles and the opportunity to finally sort out how I'm gonna do my Salamanders faces. Feel free to mark it down Whalemusic, but as Nerdfest says - I'm in it more to expand my knowledge than to score points. It may look good, it may look severely 'over-cooked' but in my eyes it's better than fearing what could happen and not trying at all... Carpe Diem.
PS: Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to photo it in it's undercoat form, but all the bits were primed and assembled as one - there was no paint on it prior to this comp - is that Ok?
Awesome entries again guys! thanks for the good work! loving the effort you've all put in! :-)
and 3rd prize! silly me, it's a beautifully printed photograph that shall be signed personally by me! I may even include a frame lol! my commitment to you guys and the hobby mean I have no shame! :-)
I'll pop an updated entrants list up at the end of the week so if I've missed anyone to date or if anyone has to retire we can get our ducks in a row! :-) Keep your brush moist guys!
Camkierhi> Thats looking brutal, great staging and a good sense of conflict, which is something I still lack the confidence to do (can do one miniature at a time but setting a scene is beyond me creatively atm)
Also as a side by side two different models I am working on to figure out how to do a better head:
So here's my entry thus far. I've done some highlights on the green and yellow. The face is also nearly done but i'm having real trouble getting a nice clear close up shot of it. Anyone have any tips for taking face shots?
Overall it still needs a bit of work before i'll be happy with it. The highlights need to be cleaned up. I've noticed a few glaringly obvious missed spots..
Minus wrote: @ Snrub : you probably asked 'cause you know I'm crazy. You can use brown washes on the green to get a more khaki result.
Thanks for that tip Minus. I've ran out of my brown wash so i used a flesh wash instead. Didn't give me the exact look i wanted but it was still one i am happy with.
Cam - Your marine/ork fight is really well done. It that one of the Kromlech mega armoured orks?
Mel - Your marine is tops. Love the hair stubble on his head. Great pose and a great paintjob.
Happily done despite having switched models midway through, fun as always to take part and try to test/improve myself as I go it was nice to get some more experience painting skin/faces especially with the new witch elves coming out to paint soon!
So new WIP and completed photos of Veteran Sergeant Brutus of the Blood Golems, Hero of the Czagar Deep and posed as he issues a challenge to his foes:
O.k, here's the list I have of the people entering the competition so far, please let me know if there's any mistakes? and don't forget to email the finished images to my email when you're done! :-)

boooooom guess who's bck lol hello duddy when did you get into nude modeling ha ha ha .
The pilot has a face, and that's good enough for the contest's rules. It's a shame I didn't have a couple more days to work on this. There was a whole other thing planned for it, and the thing would have had a thing. And more boobs, of course. Le sigh, what might have been.
Meh. There were going to be two more faces on the model and they would both been human.. Oh, and Space Marines aren't human anymore, so they don't count for the contest. Since we're getting picky about it.
Hey Snrub, you can send through whatever as best you can, but probably just a few good shots that show the model in all it's glory :-) size wise, as long as we can make out the details then we'll be sweet!
and on that note! it's October already! not long until she's all over for another year :-)
Okay, foolish as this may be, in goes my hat to the ring. Here's a wip - bit of a crappy pic, and very close to the wire.
The mini is Saint Mary from Dark AGR, though I'm using her as a counts-as Kyrinov. I've added a GS teardrop (gulp) and painted irises as well, which isn't clear from this shot, I appreciate. Mainly, in doing this I'm forcing myself to try harder!
Edit for marginally better pic.
Weety of course you can churn out an entry if you're up to painting under the pressure of 3 days left this is the final roll call of entrants and last reminder that all entrants must have emailed me a finished image or two of the model to my email at hondaboy999@hotmail.com once i get all the images I will compile them into a message to send to the other judges, we will then score all entrants and the judges will send me back a email with the scores from each entry which i shall compile and release the final results! it's getting close and it's getting fun!
OMG weety that's just ridiculously brilliant. Not fair. Ban him he's 15 seconds too late surely. please, somebody. Ok just give him the prize for blooming heck sake.

Aye, so ive read ... i guess I just kinda automatically registered that as being tomorrow night. Blast!
Similarly unhelpful was me losing track of days this weekend and thinking that -Friday- was the 9th xD (turns out thats the day of a career fair I was planning on attending)
One of my concerns was timezones (one of the problems with a multinational competition, yeah?) as 12 midnight here might be too late if we were going, say, by GMT (in which case id have less than an hour and a half, i think)
As usual, Im probably overthinking things. Feel free to throw stuff at me.
whelp! I emailed and sent my pics in. its 7pm here in nyc so i think i got in ok?? Not sure:/ Heres my entry if it counts, if not good luck everyone and see you guys on the next one!
Yup i did. i got all the wip pics too, they are on my plog and i can easily transfer them over. where should i post the wip just here too? edit: just in case these too need to be in before midnight. here are WIP pics
sorry if thats too many. its probably kinda obnoxious that i photobombed at the last second. but i literally just saw this thread :/ and we are all friends here anyways
Cam dont feel that way mate! You are a talented painter and heart goes a long way! We all start somewhere and youll only get stronger with mates like us around Be proud of your work
Hey Nerdy did you get my email w/photos i sent? I know it didn't send the first time and i just want to confirm that the 2nd one did send.
Just the thought of it maybe not having got through is making me kinda anxious...
Well I am still stuck with a basecoated model here so I think I am pretty much out of the comp! Stellar work by all though, I especially like your missionary Bebop, lots of detail throughout the model from the cloth to the parchment to that amazing marble effect.
Bit disappointed that I couldn't finish in time but on the plus side I think I aced both my midterms today.
I can see the finish line! and it's looming closer and while some entrants have channeled Usain Bolt and sent pics of finished entries hundreds of metres ago there's still some racing to lower their head through the tape knowing there's a glorious and useless bunch of prizes awaiting :-)

EEK!! I can do this.....Im a Judge....no...the Judge........I can pull this off! People will call me "Your Holiness.......er....Judgyness....YA! Judgyness....." I am....all that is Judge.......Like the Judds... but with a ge at the end....and one less d........and I cant sing for crap.....and Im barely "have sexable"...............CRAP! IM NOT A JUDGE!!! I CANT DO THIS! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *dies slow....and by that I mean I just slunk down further in my computer chair......
I'll be honest, space marine posters don't really go with my decor. A tasteful nude nerd would look lovely though. It could be a conversation piece at parties. But it's not as good as a golden toilet of course!! If I won that it would have pride of place on the mantlepiece next to the staffordshire shepherdess and the three plaster ducks.
I don't actually have a mantlepiece but I live in hope.
Don't drop your brush people! here's the finalists final images compiled for your viewing pleasure!
thanks again to everyone for taking part and having a bit of fun! I've already decided on next years trophy but prizes are alluding me for 2nd and 3rd, suggestions welcomed

I guess they'll put whoever has sent more $$$ in a suitcase first. Anyway, that's how I proceeded on Gits Mantis contest.
I judged you all. I have to say, overall I was pleased with the work. Though Ill give 1 tidbit of advice for EVERYONE that wants to join another comp again.
For the love of all things sacred, DO MORE TO YOUR BASES!!!! I nabbed so many of you guys because the bases were either really bland, or seemed like "OK I just finished painting for 12 hours, this base can do with just a drybrush"

QFT.
I am currently in the process of judging, and... the bases were easy points to grab !!!
Sorry, Im gunna be a bit slower in judging. Just worked a 12 and another tomorrow. I'll be done on Saturday though. Also, I hate you all for such good models.
1 of you really stands out as a winner for me ; the other 2nd through 5th were pretty hard to settle... And for the rest, either the build or painting wasn't up to the top tier...
Though the competition was hard for me too, all models have their great ideas & character ! Congrats to everyone in advance !

I had one that was a clear winner IMO, and a blob that were REALLY close to one another. Which equals to a good comp I think.
Despite rowdy judges throwing their beards around telling me i'm slow! .................... we have a winner!
What!..... A RESULT!?
................ YES!!
I now proudly announce the winner of the second annual Nerdcademy award for 2013, with the theme of 'faces' a worthy winner and entrant who pushed their skills and put effort in akin to entering a 'real' painting comp without further ado ...............
First prize of the Golden nerdfest trophy! is...............
............. J-Paint!
Bloody good job dude, worthy by far as a winner!
and now onto second prize! the winner of those two lovely high quality posters is.........
...... Bebopdrums!
awesome paint Bebop! that marble and attention into your base was a high point of skills!
now the strangest and probably least coveted prize! 3rd prize of a lovely black and white pin up shot of yours truly signed and framed! the winner (if you can call them that?, who really wins with this!) of third prize is..................
................Melacuvak!!
Well done man! sweet paint, sweet model, sweet pose! and a good sport!
O.k now to have a quick summarize of how it went! firstly, I really enjoy doing this little event, we meet new Nerds and get talking about how to do things to make our experience in this hobby more rewarding and enjoyable, plus I get to generally make fun of myself and hopefully get a few laughs or at least groans of amusement which is fun!
The level this year of the winners is pretty damn high in my books and the scores of the remaining entrants was really very closely together which I loved seeing means the judging criteria is accurate and the judges were all honest and critical in the right areas! and speaking of judges! THANK YOU!! without you it wouldn't have been possible I appreciate the time and effort you have put in to make this a great little project!
I've already got an idea for next years trophy 2nd and 3rd are eluding me at the moment so feel free to drop me a PM and give me some ideas lol! and may I also ask for the winners to PM me with their addresses so i can send your prizes out to you in a couple of weeks
Aah YES!! the end is here. Congrats to everyone that entered, the was some really nice works entered. If you want to know where you can improve for next time, shoot me a pm and I'll tell you where and why I negged your entrant.
Because I'll be honest, I checked everyone's work on OTHER MODELS to see if you were really pushing yourselves, and some of you lost crucial points for not trying anything new. Anyways! Enjoy those trophies everyone!
This has made me want to have a contest as well. I've some things in the pipe works for later * evil laugh *
Bloody hell Damo, you've just reduced everyone in this warehouse to tears of laughter! The picture of your third prize is not what I'd have expected to see!
I can give my scores to anyone interested as well. This one was real hard to judge, though I did like the challenge. I tend to come up with different levels of scoring, where if you did x and y, but not z, you got so many points. I didnt directly compair each one to the other, but some of you scored exactly the same in some catagories for some things (like if it is a stock model, 0 points for conversion/kitbash, if you used 2 kits or 1 with gs, etc).
I'd be interested on how I stacked up the models with the other judges, if you have that info available Damo.
Wow that's definitely a prize I dont already own... would be somewhat disturbing if I did. My wife thought it was fantastic though which was more disturbing. Great contest and fun to enter as always, and I actually have taken to doing a little more detailing on my faces now beyond skin eyes and done so it seems to have given me a definate nudge in the right direction.
Ok, as it seems a few asked for it, here's a quick summary of your works :
- Dkellyj : Pic didn't show the faces properly, so it was hard to judge... I am not too fond of the different proportions (swords seem much more realistic, but at odds with the 40k oversized weapons). I did like the theme though
- Graven : Loved the model, though I couldn't tell whether it was converted or not. The weathered armour looks great, all in your distinctive style. You also pu a lot of effort into the face (highlights). I just think it lacked a bit of definition (eyes mostly).
- Ramos : A stock Princeps, so you missed a few points in "kitbashing" category, obviously. Love the deep blue, but knowing your skills, I'm sure the wrinkled head could've looked much bettter ! A nice entry.
- Melacuvak : Ranked #3 for me. The dynamic pose, depth of highlights all over the model, and characterful face (thank you new SM kits) nicely painted (thank you Melacuvak's painting skills) - stubble, shaved head, eyes, mohawk... Sharp contrasts to top it all ! Only downside : the base was too simple.
- Camkeirhi : coolness factor 9/10, it just lacked some "neat" painting to give it the grade it deserved. The opposition of two faces was the kind of thing I expected in that competition. I think you don't dilute your paints enough. A great one !
- tomcar 31 : Great kitbash, the hazard stripe really look impressive ! The high collar helps in making the head the focal point. Picture quality / lighting sadly couldn't allow to judge the paintjob properly. Also what looks like a mould line on the hammer "head" (right hand).
- weety : Amazing entry... It was hard to compare the 4-5-ranking models !! A really special style, very realistic... Head is probably one of the best (if not THE best) of all models, in terms of colour contrasts & depth. But the judging system also focussed on other things (basing, kitbashing) that made your model dive into the points total... Sorry weety ! In a pure "overall impression" comp, you ranked #2 in my book. With nerdfest's items, you turned out to be 4th !
- snrub : liked the base (much more effort than most other entries), helped make the character into the focal point. with a bit more work on the highlights & shadows, would have ranked much better ! Face was better than the rest, also
- Minus : Absolutely charmed by the blue hue of the metals, and the deep, vibrant reds. Flesh seemed to have had a lot of work put into it (pinkish cheeks, recesses), but it didn't really show on the picture... #5 for me.
- lipsdapips : Sharp paintjob, really neat !! Mould lines on the bolt pistol ugh :( Face looks great, with dark recesses & clean highlights, only problem is the eyes... He seems like he's squinting... Without that, you could've made it to top 5 !
- mad eddy : love the converted rifle, camo looks fine... Sadly, the pic quality couldn't allow me to analyze the details properly... Face was ok, with a few highlights... The scars on the face didn't show as scars, too bad though.
- J-paint : #1. Clearly. Discoloured skin on both the model AND the cherub, scar tissue looks ace. Dusty armour, dirty tabard, agressive pose, a bit of freehand... If I had to nitpick about something, it'd be the candlelights ! And the highlights on the purple, as well (though it's a tough colour to highlight WHILE keeping the same hue !). Also, base isn't the most detailed one, though the colours were great ! You clearly deserve to be the winner !
- GiraffeX : Love your Skyrar's Wolves already : the grey & light blue make for a sharp contrast, weathering is top-notch... I just feel like the head could have used some more efforts, considering the theme. Those BA heads are nice, but quite hard to work with. Also... base ??
- bebopdrums : Well, OSL, freehanded marble, stone-like wrinkled skin, almost monochrome palette... Clearly a winner too !! Too bad J-paint's one was more striking lol, so you ranked #2 for me (And you lost some points for the lack of kitbashing). Astonishing model. Wish I could own it...
If you have any other questions / feel I misjudged your work, please do not hesitate to PM me !! I'd gladly answer !!
I also tried to be as honest as possible... Don't resent me if you think I've been a bit harsh
It's been a lot of fun to see all those wonderful pieces !! Congrats to the winners, and thanks to the others for entering the competition !! I've never won any of the painting competitions I've ever entered, so I know how frustrating it can be, and how hard it can be to place your merit in the hands of others !! You can all be proud of what you've achieved ! If only because it was a test of skills !!
Great! What an experience, competitions are always a great time. Well done you winners, well deserved! Thanks for the feedback also. Cant wait for next year
@ Yggdrasil . Fair play dude, everything you said was true. Think I need a decent camera. Btw the right hand is a bolt pistol and yes I did miss the mould line, it's not visible irl but blindingly obvious in pics. Plus I've only been painting 18 months. Thanks to nerdfest for organising the comp. I'll be back next time hunting that 3rd place
Thanks for posting ygg! Good to know whats goin on in the judges minds...id like to see similar posts from the other judges if they would oblige? Im sure we can all agree to be openly criticized amoungst our peers
I've been replying to anyone who has pm'd me, that way I can get a bit more in depth with it.
Yours is pretty easy though BB. You took a hit in the kitbash/conversion category. Stock models got 0 points from me. I don't think I could point out any painting flaws.
Haha! thought of one. Your pic wasn't particularly well set up. A pic of you holding the model < a well lit set up shot in a light box.
LOL!!!!!!!!!! Thats the dig for me on that model. Because i wanted to photo the base as well, i had to tilt the model a certain way and the ol' iphone couldnt handle it. Sadly, the WIP pics are much cleaner and actually less gritty than the finished product. :( a real drag...One of these days ive got to get a real camera and my photo chops together.(side note: if there any links to a photoshop tut where you can put the mini to one of those cool background like the pros do id greatly appreciate it ) But totally agree. And what, you didnt dig the gloves??
And one final funny lil detail...the models back is supposed to have a backpack, but i lost it, so i GS'd his back...SOOOO THERE!!!!
I will go so far as to say (and really, this is a general observation that does not reflect this competition), i think "kitbashing" is a relatively basic skill when it comes to miniatures, and in my book, holds little value next to painting execution. ie...an exceptionally painted stock model would still win out to a less exceptionally painted model that had been kitbashed. Not to say this was the case here, i still believe j paint rightfully earned the spot Just, if i were a judge, thatd be my criteria.
