Hi DakkaDakka fans, I would like to share with you all my Sons Of medusa (som) army which is a work in progress. I have a few finished squads but the force as a whole is still really only in its early stages. I was first taken by the som color scheme and thought it was a slightly unusual chapter that I could really enjoy. I now find myself more and more taken by this chapter and since the new SM codex I'm now able to use the Iron Hands chapter tactics and combat doctrine on the battlefield. I try my best to get my models to a good tabletop standard, the army has become a real labor of love and I hope to grow a decent sized force for future battles.
Firstly I must say the only pics I have so far are from some battle reports previously posted. I only have the camera attached to my phone but I do hope to get a better camera for better pics in the future. Thank you to all the kind comments in those reports it was those people who encouraged me to start this thread. Thanks also to Vourne and Boss Drachenfels, one being my brother and the other my good friend and both great gaming partners, both have amazing threads themselves on here that you must check out!
Thank you all again, lots more WIP pics to come, all comments and feedback would be hugely appreciated and please ask any queations.

Thanks Barksdale, that gives me encouragement to keep up the painting. I have been looking at your Holy Terra thread, some great building work mate, great use of magnets to. I look forward to following the project Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok firstly a big thank you to everyone, for your comments
I have had a boxed SR gunship for some time now, I was slightly daunted by the build as I new I wanted to get every possible weapon load out and combination possible for this model. I would like to share my progress so far. I will just explain a little here so that the pics to follow make more sense. To be able to swap between the hurricane bolter doors and plain doors in this kit I had to add a "false door strut" to the inside of the side assess door this had to be done as there is not enough room or depth in the models door frame to drill holes for magnets. simply file the inside of the frame down flat so that the "false strut" fits flush. I also had to add a strip of plasticard to the inside of each plain door in order to give the depth needed to drill in a void to mount the magnet. On the hurrican bolter doors I had to add another strut to mount magnets and to pack it out slightly to meet the strut on the frame. By the way all this was used from the frame the stormraven comes in!! talk about getting everything out of the kit!
For the hull mounted weapon I cut off the plastic inserts from each heavy bolter and glued those inserts (now with no weapons on the ends) into the slots on the hull targeting system. I then drillied holes for the magnets into the heavy bolter ends that remained and then into the inserts I had cut off. Then do the same with the multimeta and missile launcher. Only this time you wont need to keep the inserts as you already have them.
I hope this helps, This is by no means the best or only way to magnetize the stormraven. Its simply the way that worked for me. I have not yet started the top turret but will load more pics and directions for that later.
I hope this is of some help for anyone looking to do something simular

Hi Dakka Dakka fans, People have left amazing comments saying they are looking forward to seeing the Stormraven. It is actually still quite a way off getting a paintjob as I have things I really need to finish first. I have not painted many vehicles and I need to practice on some more basic things first like my tanks before taking on such a big flyer as the SR, so here is my first finished vehicle, the rhino.
I must admit it was the vehicles that worried me most about this project, I was confident the troops would look nice, as lots of green races and models in warhammer and 40k like striking scorpions, lizardmen, tyranids can be very bright green and look great... but a tank!?!?! and it wouldn't be just one tank, I knew there would be many of them and dreadnoughts and flyers! I have been really worried they would just look....well.....to much. I thought about having them as a slightly darker green but I didn't want to fragment the army, plus I felt it would look really obvious as to why they were darker. People would simply say "are the vehicles darker because the green was to bright?"
So I stuck to my guns, these are my Sons of Medusa and these are their colours. It took some trial and error but I must say I am really pleased with the results, bearing in mind its vehicle number one. I am very happy with it, I hope you all like it to. I certainly loved painting it

79682
Post by: Brother Ectus
Hi Brother Titus, thank you for your kind words I'm so pleased your enjoying the thread mate. As for the green effect mate it comes straight from an online painting tutorial. If you go on youtube look for "awesomepaintjob" the guy is an amazing painter his name is Lester Bursley. His videos are really great, very clear step by step instructions and all great quality. Most of his clips and effects are all done with an airbrush, I don't know if an airbrush is a tool you use but watching his tutorials inspired me to try it myself. He does tutorials for all kinds of marine chapters on there. I just really liked the Sons Of Medusa so I went out and got all the stuff from the tutorial he used and followed it step by step. I am still learning and Lester's airbrush skills are amazing but I was really surprised how fast you get to a good standard. I hope this is of some help to you, it would be great to know how you get on in the future. Thanks again, I'm really pleased you like this thread, lots more updates to come as the army grows. Of course please feel free to ask any questions.

Although I don't currently have any sternguard painted, I do have a couple of other veterans painted. They are about the closes to sternguard that I have at the moment. I will add a pic in the next day or so, hopefully this will give an indication of how a sternguard squad might look.

wulfbrigade wrote:No worries, love to see the veterans. BTW where did you find those shoulder pads?
Hi Wulfbrigade, here are some pics of the vets I have so far. This was the first time I have tried the "power flux" look on power weapons, I tried two different techniques and I'm fairly pleased with both. Some of the lines are a touch off but I am building this army to regularly battle with so I'm really just after a decent tabletop standard, so I'm happy enough with the over all look.
As for the shoulder pads mate they are from an online company called "shapeways" I think they basically make them on a 3d printer. Obviously the quality is not as good as a GW made pad would be, but its the only way I could get a SoM shoulder pads, and to be honest I think they look pretty decent.
Thanks again mate.

Hi mate, thanks that's really nice of you to say. Yeah the SoM are an iron hand successor chapter, they have some pretty cool fluff which I really like. So I'm trying to have a bit of a bionic/ mechanical theme through the army.

Hi whalemusic, here is a pic of the shoulder pads. I have ordered a few batches of these now and I must say the quality varies. The first batch I ever ordered I must say were very good, they were clean and crisp and the plastic was almost transparent. This batch was not so good, you can see a few rough spots and the detailing is a little lost around the skulls. In general I am still pleased with them but I think a lot depends on the casting and the plastic/resin mixture they use. I wont claim they are fantastic quality, but at the end of the day they are SoM shoulder pads. I suppose I would say I don't mind that they are not amazing quality, because they are still fairly unique SoM shoulder pads.

Hi whalemusic360. Yeah I did consider contacting them about making SoM Termie shoulder pads. However at this time it seems like a bit to much cost and time. Don't get me wrong of course I want my SoM to look as nice as I can make them but I also would like them done to battle with. In the future I'm sure I will source some Termie shoulder pads and make a really special unit. The trouble is I have soooo many things I want to add, I dont want to get caught up in one squad for ages and ages. I think we all do that and end up with a kind of hobby "writers block" I find its always good to have a goal to paint to. Mine is a show down with Boss Drachenfels Orks. We both want a fully painted battle with these armies and are working hard to get our forces done. So yep there will be SoM Termie pads latter but right now I am really looking to get 1850 pts done. Then simply have a blob of black a blob of white and a blob of grey. paint one corner of the weapon white the other black and the grey in the middle, then just merge the colours into each other. On a sword it would be a little different as you would have to paint halves of the blade. There loads of great wet blending power weapons on youtube "girlpainting" has a great vid called "how to paint power swords" that's what I used.

@Brother of Bone.- Thanks mate that's means a lot. Yeah I have worked a little harder on the white, so that's really nice to hear, thanks brother.
@LeadLegion.- Cheers Legion, The Thunder Hammers do take a bit of time so I'm really pleased people are enjoying them, In future projects I may try brighter colours. I wanted to keep these to black and white as the Chapter is already a very bold scheme. Its definitely a technique I will explore more though.
@Zambro.- Thanks mate, very kind of you, I read up about your tournament games. It seems like your scars are not only looking great but winning games too, congratulations It sounded like a really fun tournament with great opponents and armies. I must admit I really want to battle a lot more, its a part of the hobby I'm really keen to get more involved in.

No problem at all, thanks for the comment on my BT thread, not so often I get one of those nowadays
Well done on finally nailing it, I can tell you've worked harder. I just do two-tone on my white, it's loads of coats of Eshin Grey then Skull White, and it doesn't look half bad

@ Zambro- Thanks dude, I have actually made a joint gaming board with Boss Drachenfels, check out his badmoon blog for pics of our board. its more just a case of finding time to battle.
@Boss Drachenfels- Yeah the gold is all done with GW metallics I'll post how I do it, its really easy but a couple of people have asked.
@Vourne- Thanks mate, I'm trying hard to get them done, then I think onto a dready next how are those amazing Salamanders coming on? Anyone who wants to see some amazing Salamanders have a look at Vournes in the showcase section they are amazing.
@Miss Dee- Thanks Dee yeah I do have quite a spattering of Ironhands parts in the force. I have found though due to the brightness of the army they don't seem to stand out very much like they do against the black of the ironhands. So I will add more and try and make them more apparent. I am also going to have quite a few servitors and techmarines in the army. My warlord will be a master of the forge too. Hopefully this will also help to strengthen the bionic look.

@alanmckenzie- thanks mate that means a lot, I'm pleased this thread has given you some ideas. Cheak out "girlpainting" on YouTube for the way the force weapons are done.

Hi Dakka Dakka gang sorry for my lack of updates its just real life getting super busy
@- Miss Dee- I was not aware there was a master of the forge on terminator base, you say he has rules in IA 10? is there a forgeworld model for him? the master of the forge I have is the standard one on a normal base.
@- Barksdale- yeah the bluegreen basecoat is just to help build up to the green plus it gives nice natural shading. The storm raven still needs some building I plan to up load some pics on magnetising the top turret weapons soon.
@- Tigurius- Thanks Battle Brother, once again sorry for the lack of updates, the blending has been actually quite easy, I made a wet pallet out of an old take away container, I wuld be happy to show you how. I'll upload a few pics for that to as the thunder hammers seem to have been popular. Thanks so much for the sub and the kind words, it really means so much.
Once again sorry for the slow updates, Termies to come very soon, ill upload some wet pallet and blending stuff to, and the final built storm raven
Thanks again so much, all your comments mean so much.

Hi all, ok firstly HUGE apologies for my lack of posts., I have a good reason honest. I have just got my own flat (apartment) which is super exciting, sadly though its an utter wreck (its like an Ork boy has been living in it) so all my time and effort is going into getting it fixed up. I would like to say though this thread is important to me and so are my SoM. I really love all your posts and thank you all soooooo much. Once I am settled I will be in a great position for loads of updates.
Thanks Miss Dee I will be sure to have a look at that model cheers for letting me know.
Also as the thunder hammers seem to have been popular! I have just taken a few pics on how I made my "wet pallet" that I use for blending. Its made from a take away food container, some cut up sheets of jay cloth and a sheet of baking paper (sometimes called parchment paper)
Please not the plastic Chinese takeaway container is how we get them in the uk so if yours are cardboard it wont work (it does not have to be a food container) as long as its a shallow plastic tub or tray that's fine. However this is the best ever excuse to order takeaway or takeout.

Hi Squall, yeah this thread has slowed down a little as I am so busy at the moment. I know I keep saying it but the termie squad is almost done. I have now started to add text and scripture to the purity seals ect. If you look back at the models so far you'll notice they are plain right now. I will upload some pics. Hi Guys ok so I have been taking all comments on board and I agree with barksdale, the vehicles looks too clean. I was really keen to add battle damage but couldn't find a technique that looked right. However I found a technique that I thought might work. I've tried it and here are the results. I realise this kind of addition will always split opinions, I personally am very pleased. I think the battle damage or signs of age and service look subtle but effective. I have also added scripture, litanies and text to the purity seals and parchments. I would really love your thoughts and opinions as always.

I think the weathering looks great. Can I ask what technique you used? Is it just airbrushed on?
79682
Post by: Brother Ectus
Barksdale wrote:I think the weathering looks great. Can I ask what technique you used? Is it just airbrushed on?
Hi mate the technique is actually very simple, no airbrushing needed at all. Its just two colours one dry brushed onto the other. I used a GW medium dry brush and brushed on (thunderhawk blue) I believe the colour has changed I think its now (skavenblight dinge) lightly dry brush over the areas you want to weather. Edges and corners always come out well, look to the places that would get lots of use like hatches and doors. Allow this dry brush coat to dry well there is no need to rush, its such a quick technique any way. Then simply dry brush over it again with leadbelcher. make sure when you dry brush on the leadbelcher its a lighter coat than before. Your don't want to totally cover the previous coat and that's it very simple.
a couple of tips
1- try out a patch on the underside of your vehicle first, its not really going to be seen so get your technique right there. Or if you have a old model try it on that to (although it helps if its the same colour as the one you want to paint.
2- make sure when you clean your brush between the two colours its really dry again for the silver coat. even a damp drush will spoil it.
3- this really does need to be a drybrush a standard brush just won't get the same effect (trust me I found out the annoying way)
and that's all there is to it, if you like you can then pick out the extreme edges with a line highlight of a brighter silver like "iron breaker"

deadmeat85 wrote:That sergeant's shield is wonderful. The eagle is stunning. I would like to know how you do your golds.
edit: grammar :(
Hi deadmeat thanks so much for your very kind words ok here is how I do the gold for my SoM, its the same through the entire army so far and for the sergeants shield. Ok first for all metallic colours I like to paint them onto black so I paint every metallic item on the model black.
so for the gold
1 base coat the entire area that will be gold a 1:1 mix of Gehennas gold and Rhinox hide
2 then wash it with a 1:1 mix of Rhinox hide and nuln oil
3 then once fully dry, apply a mid tone of Gehennas gold to all the raised area's being carful to leave the wash shading in the deep recesses
4 then highlight with Auric Armour gold, again just applied to raised areas
5 finally apply runefang steel as a final highlight but just to the very extreme edges, tips and corners
I should say I didn't come up with this technique myself I found it in an old whitedwarf. it was in the old paint range but I have given the names of the new paints and it works very well. I really hope this helps deadmeat, its a bit time consuming but well worth the effort. I would love t know how you get on.

Hi DakkaDakka gang, ok so with the Termies done I figured onto the next project (or two )
Yep I decided to work on not one but two dreadies at once an Ironclad and a Venerable. They are both so similar its seemed silly to do them one by one. The pics so far are from each of them built from base coat to mid tone to highlight. I did not add a pic of them at the undercoat stage as I always undercoat in a grey primer which is so close to the colour of the plastic it is hard to see the difference. I have had these models awhile, the twin linked auto cannon on the venerable dready I painted ages ago but I will repaint it. Its a forgeworld arm that was actually given to me by Boss Drachenfels so a big thanks to him for that.

@- Sageheart- Thanks Sageheart, I noticed you have a Sons of Luther force. Is that a DiY chapter? I have not heard of them. Are they a dark Angels successor? Thanks for your post mate, all posts and comments are hugely welcome.

I suppose you don't need to magnetise the arms mate. I just like to magnetise everything, especially if you kitbash up some multi melta arms, or autocannon arms, which don't come with the kits. Makes it easy to mount them up too. It's also good to be able to switch between the flamer and melta gun on the ironclad.
Also, I never checked myself, but do the regular dread arms fit onto the ironclad and vice versa?

They look great mate. Can we get some shots from some different angles (sides and back) though?

Brother Ectus, they are painted really well. I really love the green on them. My only comment would be, I wish they had more green on them. The arms, despite being painted really well, don't actually look completed because they don't seem to match the bodies. Just my two cents.
Great stuff though, can't wait to see more.

Yeah i agree with IceAngel. The ML looks like it needs some more done to it. Maybe do the tips of the missiles in red and some silver highlights around the trim.

@- Miss Dee- Thanks Dee that's really kind, so pleased you like
@-Young_Logan- Thanks Logan yep I hope to take a full army pic soon. The only reason I haven't is because the pics are all on my phone. The camera is not all that good, I tried to take one but had to stand so far away you could barely see the models. I will borrow a decent camera and take a snap soon mate
@- Barksdale- Cheers mate, yep I have just taken a load of close up pics from more angles. I will up load them very soon.
@- Ice Angel- I totally understand that mate, the reason I've done them black is because when the army is all lined up its sooooo green like stupidly green. You will hopefully see what I mean in them army pic to come. I feel the army needs to be muted a little. I do agree with you though they do look a little unfinished, good point, maybe I'll try and add in some spot colours to enhance them. cheers mate.
@-deadmeat- Yeah your right mate, I think painting that trim silver would make a big difference, I have lots of stuff to add through the force like writing all the scripture on purity seals ect, I will add this to the to do list
Thanks so much, I'm blown away by all your comments and it honestly means loads to, more pics to follow of the thunderfire cannon I'm working on.

Ectus, seriously great work mate.
These dreads are brilliant, great scheme. I actually really like the black arms, kinda gives that *bolt them on in the heat of a battle* look. Black isn't always easy to work with and they have come out amazingly well.
I have seen this army many times 'in the flesh' and let me tell you all. Is better than the pics show. (I know, hard to believe).

Those are spectacular. Sons of Medusa are so strange in that they should look terrible with the neon green but the scheme is so nice to look at. Your tones are wonderful.
Do you do anything special for the bronze/copper work? I love how that looks and I am always trying to do metals better.
Thanks,

Hi Gorgrimm, thanks for your really nice comments. I did post how to do the gold earlier but I've pasted it into this reply to save you scrolling all the way back
so for the gold
I really hope this helps, its a bit time consuming but well worth the effort. I would love t know how you get on.

Hehe no problem mate, it's a really simple technique, takes a bit of a long time but it's worth the extra effort. Definitely let us know how you get on dude. Feel free to post your pic here.

Thanks Brother Ectus, will do. I am in need of ordering some paints though, it'll be a bit before I can paint.
