So I am assuming most of us played video games when we were kids, what was is the first game you can remember playing over and over?
Mine was an old knock-off/bootleg of mario, I have no idea what it was called, but the whole thing was black and white, "koopa" shells still dropped when you jumped on a them, but they killed you if you touched them, bower was a replaced by a sphinx that would only jump up and down and shoot fire balls, and you defeated it by ground pounding a stake chaining his in place behind him, he would them run off, still loved it though, even though now I realize how broken it was.
Upon some research this game appears to be modeled after super mario land for gameboy, but this was something different, the first level is completely flat, nothing to jump over but enemies, and there is a ground pound.
Diablo 1 as a monk. Thats right the monk with graphics so bad everything was grey with dial-up internet and a computer so slow I could leave to get food during loading between levels. So many good times in that game
Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, in 2003. Yes, almost ten years and two whole console generations later. I won it at a school competition. It took a while to set up and the picture was sort of fuzzy, but it was amazing nonetheless. I wish I kept this thing, looking back on it now. I would have had an amazing console collection considering I won an N64 the year after and bought an Atari Jaguar the year after that at a school sale.
Ratchet and Clank on the PS2. I remember it as not only was it the first PS2 game I ever played, but it was the first that I really wanted to play to completion even after the storyline had finished. Even today after games like Skyrim, Civ5, Dragon Age etc it still stands out as one of my gaming highlights
Played it ever since I was a wee tacker and still do regularly. The best game of the Civ series without a doubt. Far as I'm concerned it's still one of the best computer games ever made.
First game I can remember really grabbing me was a game called Starglider on the Sinclair Spectrum. Reading about it now it was piggybacking off the success of Elite, and was a very similar type of game. Remember being frightened by some of the giant ships you would encounter!
Spent hours and hours with my friends on Dizzy as well, both the original and Treasure Island. Remember the one game you only had a single life - single slip into a puddle of water (or, usually you would die encountering things for the first time, then spend ages getting back to the same point again).
Console wise, there was a brilliant Atari 2600 game of Star Wars (indestructible Darth Vader would occasionally come through), and also one where you piloted a helicopter through a stage with undulating hills and through caverns. Can't remember the name sadly, although I remember once you got to the end you had to fly back all the way to the start again!
Total Annihilation. I had other good games before that, but that was my first absolute mind-blowing favorite that made me drop everything else in gaming for a long time.
First *favorite* console game was probably... hrm. Gak, I don't know if I can honestly remember that far back, that's something like eighteen years ago.
Banjo-Kazooie. I literally had no idea what on earth I was supposed to be doing in that game so I mostly just wandered about aimlessly looking at the pretty and colorful graphics. This went on for about a year or two, and then I found out that video games have goals and ever since, I've been trying to beat it. I got Banjo-Tooie at the same time and that one was even better. Come to think of it, it's been roughy 11 years and I still haven't beaten either of those games yet.
Back when games still came in boxes with 50+ page manuals containing a cool short story.
Back when real heroes didn't need shields in their starfighters.
Back when the Empire could just park a Star Destroyer in a system plagued by civil war and be like "stop fighting you morons or we're bombing y'all back into the stone age"
Paradigm wrote: My early favourites were LOTR: Return of the King and The Third Age, and Star Wars Battlefront (still one of the best).
The Third age Mod is the absolute best strategy game I have played, so much love and care has gone into that mod that it brings a tear to a lone gamers eye sometimes
Too many to mention or to even recollect but if I absolutely had to pick one, maybe Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. One of the greatest adventure games ever made IMO.
If I had to go for some of the earliest that would be tough. There was battletoads, super Mario world, Little Nemo, Donkey Kong Country and a variety of other games. They even had that old TMNT game back then.
I was born in the late 80's. Good times were had with those games.
Gameboy, Pokemon Red. I still have my original cartridge and will always hold dear memories of my 8bit noise machines and flashing black and white screens.
Woah, quite a few names on here to conjure up all sorts of nostalgia! For me it was either 'Robin Of The Wood' or 'Ad Astra', both Spectrum games and both all kinds of awesome…
C64 : Raid on bungeling bay ( i actually thought we mispronounced the name but apparently not)
Bruce Lee - This game was so much fun as two player co-op when my young self decided that launching surprise attacks on player 1 was the best things ever , games tended to end on a sour note
Kavik_Whitescar wrote: Gameboy, Pokemon Red. I still have my original cartridge and will always hold dear memories of my 8bit noise machines and flashing black and white screens.
I lied, I can sit back and remember playing Sonic 1,2 and 3 on my genisis and loving that before I knew what pokemon was. So Sonic the Hedgehog holds my first ever Vcard
It's a tricky one as there have been so many that have always pulled me back to play them.
Space Harrier on the C64, Road Rash on the Mega Drive, Tekken 2 on the Playstation and Dawn of War on the PC. All bar Space Harrier are played to this very day. The C64 is up the loft at me dads, it's not a system you can go for a quick game on really.
Console: Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES, the first video game I ever played, and still one of my favourites today (although tbh I now play the super mario advanced version on my phone)
PC: Age of Empires - Man I loved that game, was one of the first PC games I owned and I played it to death. Wish they would make a HD edition like they did with number two, or if someone were to make a AoEII mod to bring back the original (like they did with porting the original HL to the source engine)
First of all I'd like to thank sarpedons-right-hand for already picking a couple of games older than mine (You either all got into gaming at an older age or are much younger than me).
Settlers for the Commodore CDTV. I remember playing the demo to death, getting the full game (after teaching my Dad how to play so he would want it) and then playing that to death (Im still convinced they changed the store room artwork from the demo to full game). Took me a few years to realise (Floppy) Disc 1 was not needed for the game at all, it didn't load anypart of the game, it was just an intro...
I also remember playing alot of Mr Puniverse on the commodore 16 or 64. Not a very good game but one of the few games we have.
These are not really some of the first games that I played but these are the first few games I played that I really liked. The first is SUPER SMASH BROS MELEE!!!!!!!! ( starts singing theme song like a crazy man) and also age of empires 3 and Pokemon sapphire.
the first game I ever played was Super Mario brothers in 1988. It still ranks as a great game. The first game I loved, owned and played the gak out of was Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES (otherwise known as Final Fantasy 6). Still hard to beat that game when it comes to story, party customization, and sheer scale.
Through that, I learned that pressure enhances ability. The best game I had of that was when I was supposed to get ready for school, and just Would Not Die.
For console, I would probably have to go with the original The Legend of Zelda; along with speedruns I once managed to get killed by Gannon without even having a sword (as opposed to not using one).
I was an only child for a long time, and the first video game experience I remember was my older cousin (my idol growing up) coming over with his NES for the first time, and playing LOZ, along a couple other games. My mom eventually bought me a second-hand NES with a gold edition of LOZ. Almost 20 years later, and I still have that NES and that version of LOZ.
Very first favorite that I played over and over would have to be Defender of the Crown for the Commodore 64, 25+ years ago for me. After that would be the very first PC game I bought with my own money: Legacy of the Ancients.
Console - Toejam & Earl on the Genesis, so many good times.
PC- Warcraft 2-I remember trying sooo hard to clear up enough space on my 1.2 gig hard drive to install it, read the manual like 6 times during the process.
MMO - Ultima Online - before people knew how to play MMOs properly.
Standing in town stealing over and over from this guy as he spammed "Gaurds! Gaurds!" over and over. Got three house deeds.
Luring newbies outside of town and killing 'em for their starting gold.
Taming Dragons and siccing them on people.
Dyeing all the moongates red and telling people they were cross-server now.
Calling a GM and having a guild member keep asking him stupid questions while other random jerks would run up to talk to him and ganking them.

Defender of the crown... Loved that game, but could never get the hang of the jousting!
Has to be Project Stealth Fighter by Microprose for the C64;the size of the manual alone was like 'WOW' and the overlay for the keyboard; now that brings back memories.Come to think of it I had most of the simulators by Microprose.
Spyro the Dragon, Soul Reaver and Tomb Raider, all on the PS1, hard to pick an exact favourite, especially as I played all these games about the same time, so not sure which was first.
Was expecting Crash Bandicoot to me mentioned, now that going a ways back. Heck I got into gaming when the PS1 was released, must have been about 4 or 5 years old though. Hmm so thats where my life changed and I was hooked on gaming
Easy faves tho, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, Tomb Raider, Timesplitters 2, The Sims and Fable....oh the nostalgia lol.
A commodore 64 game that I can't remember the name of at all but it was a guy flying along like superman going under and over various obstacles. Played it non stop for months can vividly picture it well over 20 years later! Would love to have a go on that beast now. Kung Fu on the NES is my other standout from ages past.
Probably Pirates Gold on my dad's old 386, even had a turbo button on the case so you could do some silly overclock crap when you didn't want to sail around at the speed of smell.
Wayback, probably the Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins game for Gameboy Color. That was mostly because it was one of like four games that I owned, though, so I'm a bit biased there. Once I had access to a lot more and the playing fields were leveled, I went through a long obsession with Mardek: RPG. It's a Flash RPG with similar combat to Final Fantasy, but with a bit more strategy involved, and less pressure. (You can actually see your opponent's weaknesses, total health, and stats. Also, there's no pressure to move really quick, since it's completely turn-based, so you can take your time with inventory and attack selection. Which is really useful, when you have a dozen attacks and 20 or 30 items.) It's still an incomplete series, unfortunately. :(
If you haven't already, you should try Dreadball - closest representation of that computer game in a board game!
Might not be advisable, I got so frustrated with Speedball in the end that I ended up throwing the disk out the window of my bedroom. It didn't work again after that

Going to counter that and say.
Diablo 1 with the Warrior. Sorry but demons feared my weapon that could do 500 damage per a hit, that goatmen quest was too funny. (Please realize I was 5 years old when I played that game)
Chrome Hounds. Funnest mech game I ever played, I especially loved being able to customize your mech in crazy, obviously broken ways, like a chicken-leg with a double double. and the cockpit somewhere behind the right knee.
Older would be Iggy's wreck balls(or something like that) on the N64, or this one game with a gecko with a bad sense of humor. I can't remember the name of it.
I came to gaming slightly later in life (11-12, so 2003-2004) so my favorites were Age of Empires One and Two, Medieval Total War (original) and Battlefield 1942, and of course Morrowind, which I still play regularly today
that reminds me, I have a copy of allied assault, but I cannot get it to work on my computer that I have set aside for games such as this. the computer runs on XP, but when I try to open it I get an error report. Ill get screenshots asap, im at college now so I cant.
Well, PC wise, without a doubt, put me down as another one for TIE Fighter. I played TIE Fighter and then later on, Jedi Knight before I had even ever actually seen a Star Wars film. - Before then, I was very much in the camp of, "Star Wars, blah. Picard for the win."
It wasn't until the Star Wars Special Edition re-release that I even knew Harrison Ford (I grew up with Indiana Jones) was in the films. You see, in the days before household internet and especially in a small town in Scotland, I only found things out if I especially went out to look for it, or someone you already knew particularly enjoyed it. Especially as my parents completely shrugged off science fiction 'rubbish.'
Console-wise, I dunno. I had a master system and a gameboy as a child but I think I mostly just dipped in and out of the games on it. Maybe the Star Trek: The Next Generation gameboy game? I remember really loving that game.
Ooh, there's even a youtube video of it. Though the guy seems to be truly terrible at it.
When the borg turned up in it, I very much remember it going horribly, horribly wrong....
Hmmm, tough one for me. There were so many for me. Without a doubt the two that stand out the most are Age of Empires (I, II and the Conquerors expansion) or the Total War series (Rome I and Medieval II). I'm pretty sure I spent the vast majority of my childhood determining the fate of Europe, Africa and Eastern Asia and whether or not to plunge them into abject bloodshed. That said, Age of Mythology was so epic I still get the urge to play now. I'm just sad I missed out on the earlier Elder Scrolls game - I only came into them with Skyrim (Heretically, I got the Xbox 360 version - severely wishing I'd upgraded my PC and got that version for all the mods.)
The Settlers IV. It was the first game I ever played, and way too difficult for me at the time. But I absolutely loved it!
Now, I have just reinstalled it again, and it is still awesome!
Makes me so nostalgic for the games, but also the magazines (CVG, Mean Machine etc.) which were around at that time, and were keenly awaited each month.
The first game that ever hooked me was Theme Hospital. I still crave it now, the awesome lil' sprites and that annoying announcement "Doctor to the operating theatre - Nurse required in ward" Ah the memories.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 'River City Ransom'. One of the earliest co-op beat 'em up game that you can still see references to; "BARF!", coins dropping, etc.
I loved playing that game co-op with my friends. I remember my friend and I would race back to my place during lunch just to get in a good 20 minutes of gaming before racing back to school.
The first game i ever really cared about was Metal Gear Solid 2, i remember i had a demo which i played for hours a night, then once i got it i got pretty much every edition you could buy. Brought the HD edition too ten years later.Graphics, story, guns...just pretty much one of the best games i've ever played.
Chrono Trigger! It was the first game I played and beat on my own. I love that game, I still go back and play it, and love it every time. It is still probably my favorite game of all time.
That game did an excellent job with the story, the atmosphere and settings, but it is especially good in the character development.
Chrono trigger was a great game. Its one of those I wished I still had because they are worth a bit of cash now, so much so it makes me think an emulator is really the only way to go
I've wasted too much money on chrono trigger... I have the snes version, the ds version, and the wii vc version. It's funny now when I want to play it, I always debate which version I want to play.
It wasn't like there was a lot of choices at the time.
By 1978, it was probably Combat on the 2600. Then Space Invaders. And eventually, Yar's Revenge on the 2600 (one of the best 2600 games ever made), but by then there were a number of arcade games I had also obsessed over.
