Found a need to build a new army. I present you with more Angels Sanguine:
Spent a lot of bits on these guys. Mostly just because
The army is going to play a lot different from my Sons of Medusa, and thankfully so. Going for a mix of weapons within squads to help deal with different threats. I still need to pick up a Death Company squad but that's really the only other purchase for these guys.
For those who might not have seen them, I've moved my Angels Sanguine Terminator squad into the new Gallery for these guys. The army will follow the colors laid out with them!
Pretty psyched to get these going after thinking about it for so long!

Nice looking jump-packs for these guys.
Looking forward to seeing the army progress.
Question is : Will Dark red be the new green? :-)

Post by: grey_death
Thanks Jakob
I'm hoping they'll take off like my Sons of Medusa did Though if they do, I'll be in the market for a new project log for them! For now though, I'm expecting that this will be much like the Space Wolves, in where I get them complete and they head to the back burner for a while. Though the angels will be double the space wolves point value out the gate!
For those looking to know a little more about the bases and see them without marines on top, I posted a bit about them on The Painting Corps today.

Thanks guys I do hope to keep the variation going throughout whatever additions I make to the force. I'm not sure I'll be adding a lot more past the death company who will make use of weapon variants and possibly a few helmets.
A buddy was bugging me for a WIP shot so I obliged and decided I should share it with everyone to give a little progress report!
Still more to work on the red but it's close. Then the black will go quickly enough and I'll start in on the yellow for the helmets. Note the sanguinor who's finally together in the background! Thanks for that headache GW...

I like the Angels Sanguine colour scheme, it's the one I use in DoW II lol...
I don't think I risk much if I say it's going to be epic...
372
Post by: grey_death
Thanks Ygg's, I'm not sure how 'epic' it will be but I'm hopeful
I've even got ideas on making a display board for these guys.
So far they're one shade darker and I've started highlighting. Only four models in though. After that it's the black side which I hope will go much faster. Then it's blacking out metals and then...well you get the idea..
A lot to go still.

Angels Update:
Armor colors are down!
Still a TON of details to go. I might still go back in on the black side of the armor and touch up the highlights a little. They were washed out almost completely (it was just a Codex Grey highlight) so I'm thinking a few touches here and there would help.
Metals up next. I'm just happy to have gotten this far as fast as I did!

Great work. It's inspiring to see you consistently putting out high-quality mini's.
I've always had a special love for Angels Sanguine but the wifey refused to allow any collection of miniatures named "BLOOD angels" (emphasis her's).
These look like they'll turn out top-notch.

Post by: grey_death
Git, Thanks bud I dig that model as well. I kind of miss this style of wolf scout. The new wolf scout heads don't do enough to change up scouts and make them personalized like these old models. Not that these guys are realized the greatest though. The details get a little cludgy here and there and the poses aren't exactly inspired. I guess that's where the scout plastics are a benefit.
Asylum, Thanks! I'm glad you dig them!

For anyone looking for a little more about these guys, the Reinforcements article went live this morning on TPC!
I do wonder if I should start pulling finished stuff out of here and into the Showcase forum. Thoughts?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Hey g_d, I've never really understood the purpose of the showcase... just figured it was a place for folks to put finished work that didn't want to do a p-log. Does it have another purpose? Heads can really make or break a figure. While those old one's might not be executed as well as the modern ones... they have a lot of character. Weety's RT blog is filled with great examples of characterful old faces & it's fun to see them.
372
Post by: grey_death
The showcase is sort of for that. But it's also a good place to put stuff out there for those who aren't really invested in the project log section. It's definitely a more casual experience than digging through p-logs to find the finished stuff.
I think for taking things from your p-log and posting in showcase, you're better off posting army sized things there. This is likely the direction I'll go with posting things from here.
The best part of doing these wolves is that the majority of the army is from the old school models. This was a friends army that he handed over to me when he got out of the game, so it's full of a lot of old stuff that is pre-4th edition. The next squad up for the wolves is a Long Fangs squad full of old 2nd Edition models and weapons. Should help in terms of making the army more effective! But they'll also look really neat, especially for the younger crowd who might not have seen anything like them!

Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah, my son's Doom Eagle army is mostly made up of my early (1st & 2nd ed) marine stuff. His friends (10-11 yr olds) just love it. Not as sophisticated as the stuff being produced now... but they're quite unusual so the kids really get a kick out of them. My MW have gone in that direction, but that wasn't my original intent. I'd planned on giving all my old stuff to my son & starting a "modern" marine army. Now of course... were *both* collecting the old models.
"Best laid plans" and all that...

Still working on the Angels Sanguine!
Took a little detour with the Sanguinor, but he needs to be painted too!
A lot more to do still all around, but they're slowly plodding along.
Got a game in with them today, though it was against Jin and he's not exactly a 40k player , was fun killing my Sons of Medusa though and getting to know the army a little while giving a re-primer on 40k to him! Fun force to play though and once I remember to use all of my rules they'll be much better.

Ah, nice to see you giving some Sanguine love! I plan on breaking up my BA army (if I every get around to it) with some 'loaner squads' from the lamenters, flesh tearers and angels sanguine to mix things up a bit. Am def loving your reds, you have excellent color selection abilities sir, you get a lot of depth in your primaries without compromising their ability to look 'realistic'. Good job!

Tom, going with the lesser seen chapters is the way to roll. I'll be interested in seeing how you tackle them for sure. When it comes to using color, I tend to go super saturated and work my way back using washes and other techniques (like battle damage for the SoM). For this one it was Thraka Green that helped tone the reds just right.
jirc, glad you enjoy the blog! It's a long and winding road from the start to where I am now with it But it's always a fun to bounce from project to project!

Speaking of the thread, I went back through the pages, there's a lot of stuff not in here, but it definitely lives up to the random nomenclature! Though I do think I've settled in to use this for anything outside of my Sons of Medusa at this point. So any Orks, Warriors of Chaos, Eldar, Angels Sanguine, and Space Wolves stuff will likely be put here.
Ooo..Orks...or maybe eldar? Horses? See, this is why I need a random kitchen sink thread like this!

Thanks for the inspiration!

dantay, I think they might work nicely. Maybe a few less runes? Then you might have to worry about the wolf icons here and there.

Just going to xpost from TPC:
Well, affirming that I can never stay with a single project any longer, I've dug in on a new model that just happened to catch my eye a few days ago. This Space Wolves Rune Priest is from the way back days of 2nd Edition and comes from the collection of old wolf models my friend handed over to me when he stepped away from the hobby.
There was just something about seeing it in my cases after getting the Wolf Scouts finished up that made me want to give him some table time. I rummaged through my bases and found a 40mm that I had in resin, unfortunately the base was pre-modeled with details I couldn't use, so I just sanded the top down and pinned the chunk of metal that is an old school terminator to it!
The paint is following my basic scheme for them so far, with the runes being the only real hurdle of thought. I had considered going with gold for them, but after getting the other gold sections down, and seeing the cool blue/silver that has come from the Mithril Silver being surrounded by all of that Shadow Grey tone, I'm quite happy with how it's looking. I did give them a quick hit of Badab Black to give them a little additional depth though.

I'm not sure what I'll end up working on next, so many models in the queue right now not to mention a lot of others catching my attention when I'm just browsing my collection
I'll likely try and do some more work on my Angels Sanguine squads, maybe finish up the Sanguinor and keep looking for that next model that I want to add to the wolves and maybe see what needs work in my Warriors of Chaos. In the end though, I can never reliably foretell what will be in these pages o.o...

Nice,
I have a lot of the old models, mostly due to my age. They present a different set of challenges. Smaller than current line, fine details are not always present through-out the model ( seems like certain areas get more attention than others) not always codex usable ( never stopped anyone from painting )
you have breathed new life into these figures- in itself is an art. Kudo's

Very nice work on the AS assault squad and sanguinor. I still need to paint mine. Look forward to seeing your finished paint job.
The SW terminator looks very cool - I think it's one of the few old school models that can still hold up style wise to the current line though it might be a bit short but definitely doesn't lack any details.
372
Post by: grey_death
Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words .
When it comes to working on these old models, the biggest issue is getting over how static they are. You're very very very limited in regard to how and where they should be posed. The post I've gone with here is the only viable one I came across moving the arms up and down to get the best possible look for the model. For things like the Wolf Scouts, I'm going to end up cutting some heads off and using the drill to get them some new looks if I add more someday.
I want to make use of as much of my collection as possible for the armies I have and maybe even build a few new ones from the sorted set of models. I have enough of them to build at least a few more forces up! We'll see where things all end up and what ends up traded away from something else

The first finished Assault Marine:
I went ahead and finished one of the marines to see what sort of issues I would come across as I finish these guys up.
The chapter insignia gave me a little hassle, but mostly because of the placement/angle. didn't bother taking a shot of that because it's hard to really see, and doesn't photograph well anyways. I'll try and get a shot of it when I do a more finished looking one. I'm using a skull transfer with freehand wings, It's not terribly complicated but I've already decided that the wings will go on after the skull is set.
I used a decal for the right pad here but decided against bothering with it for the future as they aren't exactly opaque and required too much work to make it fit flat. Instead I've decided to paint in any blank shoulders freehand.
Still a lot to do for the rest of them, but it was nice to sit down and knock one model out to complete!

Assault Marine = the sexeh.
Sanguinor looks awesome overall, but looks oddly flat for metallics? Did you matte him? If so, I would suggest an additional chestnut/sepia wash in the deepest recesses, then hit all the upper golden surfaces with satin or thinned gloss to restore the specularity. Either that, or you are just really, really good with lighting your photos lol!
372
Post by: grey_death
Thanks Tom, getting a single marine done will help me visualize things a little more for the rest of the group.
The sanguinor did get get a hit of matte finish. Maybe I should think to give him a little more gloss, but I would have to take a good look at the model and see where how he feels in person in that respect.
If you notice, the gems were hit with a little VMC gloss varnish prior to matt and still held a good amount of their shine.
As for the lighting, I just wait until dark and take pics with the natural lighting of that room against a card backdrop Seems to work better for the true colors than anything else I've used so far. At least with my camera that is!

Post by: Yggdrasil
Honestly Aaron, for an indefinite reason I "feel" your newest assault marine is... not at your usual standards? (Pretty hard to express)
Maybe it's the lighting, but it seems less... striking that your other masterpieces. The highlights might be not strong enough, maybe... or maybe that's just the lighting.
Or perhaps it is that most of your pieces are either highly-detailed models (Space Hulk, Sanguinor above) or highly customized (Sons of Medusa), so this somewhat "plain" model looks a bit off?
Still better than what we could achieve uh, no worries!!
Oh, and... is that one of the FW bolt pistols that I had sent you?

Looks really cool. You did a good job with the yellow helmet.
372
Post by: grey_death
Raph, I can understand the apprehension with this scheme compared to something like my Sons of Medusa. The need for a change of style and approach was most of the reasoning for even starting this army and my Space Wolves. Clean and a touch more muted with a few different techniques used here and there. I do think that a much of the issue might have to do with the quick photos and lack of proper depth coming through. They are a little flatter in finish, but that's purely by design as I've gone with more muted coloring on the whole for them. The terminators are done in exactly the same way as these Assault Marines, albeit without the yellow to draw attention, and as you mentioned, they have a lot more detail going on. In the end, I'll have to look at how they feel once the entire unit is complete, and I think that's likely the best way to judge these guys, on the way they look en mass.
Going crazy with my Sons has made me want to simplify for things I want purely for gaming reasons.
The pistol is indeed from our trade I used them throughout this army to add a little 'class'
40k Ninja, Thanks, foundation yellow paint has become my new hero!

grey_death wrote:Going crazy with my Sons has made me want to simplify for things I want purely for gaming reasons.
I can empathize with this. I don't think the extreme contrast in the photo is doing you any favors as far as truly assessing the figure. I think it looks fine, but it's hard to make any constructive comments beyond that.

Post by: Imperial Monkey
the assault marine is good. Simple is better, over-highlighted figures actually don't look as good so I think if you do an army like that you will have a striking and well painted force. What more can you ask for...?
17710
Post by: Yggdrasil
Hey, of course I hadn't even considered such a talented guy as you could actually paint minis... for playing!!! So yes, they will of course look striking when "squadded", but that may explain the "slight" difference in perceived quality... You wouldn't do commissions by chance lol?
18424
Post by: Imperial Monkey
sorry,I was just trying to complement GD cos he sounded unsure of it from his post... And if that was addressed at me, no. I don't do commissions.

Sorry Imp. Monkey, I wrote that for g_d... lol

Post by: grey_death
It's always in my mind that I don't get enough volume out the gate as I would like in terms of finished minis. I like the play the game when possible and when I play I like to play fully painted. Taking ages to paint an army doesn't give me much chance to do that.
I play the game to paint in most cases, but the playing part is a lot of fun too! So getting them up to a good squad standard is more than enough for something like this project.
As far as commissions, I have done small commission work in the past, mostly single figures. Army painting isn't something I have a lot of experience with. I'm hoping that with my airbrush I'll be able to make that a thing of the past though
Speaking of airbrush, i need a new compressor...

Egg recommended the Sparmax to me, which I am very impressed with
It is actually an Iwata compressor, they make the hardware, iwata puts their plate on it. Exactly the same... Good price too!
P.s, don't underestimate yourself GD, I am sure you will find ways of using awesome techniques to erode all the timesavings the AB will give you lol!

Post by: Eggroll
Yup, I have the Grex compressor - tankless version. It's been very good so far and quiet too which is great. I have it hooked up to my 3 gal hardware compressor to charge the big tank so it doesn't always have to run.
If I had the choice, I'd still buy the Sparmax since they are both the same price. I think the Sparmax model was a bit louder but came with an attached air tank which is a must. Both Sparmax and Grex are made in Taiwan so the quality is definitely better than the made in china ebay compressors and as Tom mentioned Sparmax produces compressors for Iwata. Unfortunately, the store was out of that model so I went with the Grex. Don't regret it though - works like a charm.

Post by: grey_death
I really think if I'm going to drop money on a compressor I'll have to get one with an attached tank. I really want that for the next upgrade since it allows for a TON more control and as you said Egg, it's sort of a necessity for any real airbrush work. Will help cut down on air pressure variation.
I'll have to look into Sparmax and maybe a little more into Grex as well. Thanks a ton for the recommendations.

@G_D The rune priest looks awesome, as does the assault marine. I always have a lot of time for those painters who tackle the halved and quartered paint schemes. The only gripe I do have is with the base, for me it detracts attention away from the model a bit, just personal preference though I guess.
@MT11 You don't live that far apart Tom, Google maps gives it as a poultry 2 day car journey away. So what if you have to cross into a different country to get there its all about the road trip.

Very nice. I got to say, I am still a fan of your blue. While my base color is pretty much pinned down for my SW, I think I will borrow your color scheme for my Rune Priest as I would like to differentiate him without resorting to a clashing ultramarine blue.
Personally, I enjoy painting the old SW models, as I think they had some of the best character for 2nd edition. I would even go and say that thier character rivals some of the newest SW plastics; take my WG scout pack leader for instance. Saddly, I sold off most of my 20 or so old SW terminator models years back, though I have some lovely FW conversions that will one day take thier place.
PS I also want to commend you for judiciously turning the voting feature off for your WIP shots .

Tank is good for not only consistent pressure but reduces the wear and tear on a compressor from starting/stopping all the time. For the compressor it's good to invest the money at the start and have it last you for the long haul than buying smaller/cheaper ones and replacing them.

Lenny, glad you're digging the models, as to the base, I dont think the high contrast slightly off lighting shot helps tp really show the base in the best way. For me, it helps to give the models a sense of place, and warms the piece up overall. And hey, its only 1 days ride imo, I've taken lomger trips in a day before I think its high time the canadians had a dakka get together too.
Wyomimg, thanks, i'm really happy with the way the blue ended up on the space wolves, its a dead ringer fpr the wolves of old that made me fall in love with this hobby in the first place. I'm kimd of kicking myself now though as I traded away my Iron Priest a few years ago. I might need to get my hands on him again...
Egg, thanks for the added thoughts on the purpose of a tank. I'll also have to consider getting a compressor with an auto shut off feature for that reason.
Tom, you should take more time off, come down to the states, I got your first pint! You'll need some respite in a few months, best of luck with all the sleepless nights and zombie mind days!

A little something different:
Overwatch, 24"x18" Acrylic on Canvas
I did this piece as a break from my usual artwork, a play in super saturated color and texture. A nice change up from the usual super realistic or straight black and white work I usually do (for those interested, here's a link to my personal art website). Overall I'm quite happy with how the piece ended up and came together. It definitely felt good to play around with color this way and allowed me to just get lost in it and not really think too much.
I hope to find a home for this piece too, so if you're interested shoot me a PM and we'll talk!

And as an added bonus I took a shot of the entire army thus far:
So happy to be finished with the assault squads. That puts me up around 1k points and gives me the go ahead for a Death Company unit Not to mention more terminators from my Space Hulk set, the next of which is looking like will be the Librarian. A good change of color while still being extremely useful for the current force!
But as always, who knows what will catch my eye next as I get to wander my hobby room! I hope you enjoyed watching the progress on these guys and dig the final result. Now, to kick some teeth in with them!

Awesome stuff; very inspiring. I might have to get back to the old drafting table and get to painting.

Nicely done. The army is coming together very nicely grey. Did you end up doing the shoulders by hand or use the decals?

Wonderful work g_d! They just ooze drama and menace. I especially like the work on the sword featured in the one inset shot.
would it be possible to get a closer look at one of the older style jump packs... say from a 3/4 view?
Thanks, and well done!

Jin, Thanks bud. I fully intend for them to put the boot to your 40k efforts in the near future!
l33tninj4, Thanks for the kind words. I love to hear about how my efforts here and elsewhere get people working on their own stuff just a little harder It's something to have that effect on people.
Eggroll, Thanks, for an army that was born out of a want for dual purposed Space Hulk terminators, I'm quite happy with how they're coming along. I ended up finding a skull that was the perfect size on the Cadian transfer sheet! I did however have to add the wings freehand. I went back on the first three and redid their shoulders with the new sized skull as well. Though with one I didn't have a transfer for so I just freehanded it.
Gitsplitta, I'm glad they come across that way! The power weapons so far have been a lot of fun. And after a few games with them, I've noticed how effective they are . I'll try and get a good squad by squad set of shots for the army, that should show off the packs a little better.
+++++++++++
I'm not sure what I'm going to work on next. I just picked up a Blood Angels battleforce as well as a Drop pod through a trade. Not to mention a set of Secret Weapon flight deck bases. Oh and I have Sons of Medusa I could work on...Maybe more Space Wolves? Maybe it's time to finally get more work on my Warriors of Chaos done? Then there are the paintings I could be working on.
Oh where will the time go?

Armor sounds really good to me! I'd like to see how you'd apply the color scheme to the vehicles in question, especially the drop pod.

I agree, it does seem a bit empty. Is that the look you're going for, or have you toyed with some ideas of more terrain? I like the paint scheme though, with the heavy rust effects! Nicely done!
Cheers,

Hi, just popped over from the showcase thread!
Glad I did, all looks good over here! Be good to see some more Blood Ang. . . sorry, I mean Angels Sanguine!

Thanks for the replies folks!
kanelom, The spareness is by design for the most part. I had to consider how models were going to stand on it all, how much space I would be willing to lose to details that would be covered by models standing on it, or wasted space to areas that models couldn't stand on. Considering the size of the board, I went with just a few minor details here and there and would let the models on top become the main focus on the display.
Rawson, I was worried the rust effect would be a little overwhelming but I think it came together nicely in the end. There's enough variation in the finish that it's not a solid block of color. It gets broken up more by the start colors of the models. See my reply to kanelom on the reason for how empty it feels. It might also help to keep in mind that I needed to allow space for army expansion. There will be at least one more squad of Terminators, a Libby, another assault squad and a death company squad going on this some day .
Emperors_Champion, Good to see the link helped you find your way out here The Angels will be catching additions some time down the road. I'll likely be going with the libby from the Space Hulk set next for them!

Just a little something I threw together the other day:
Not sure when it'll catch paint just yet! I'm thinking a mix between Afrikakorps and current US desert colors. Lots of miniature modeling techniques and ideas going to be used here.

Been etremely busy with school but found a few minutes here and there to mess around with this little project i've had floating in my head. I think I might be making some more of these in the future as well. I give to you, a shipping container:
Made from a velvetta box, some corrugated shipping material and a little plastic rod and some thin plasticcard.
Fun, cheap and effective terrain piece. A bunch more and it could realistically be a full table with just these. time to pick up some more super glue...

Wow, thanks for the response everyone! I didnt expect something as myndane as a shipping container could get such a warm welcome!
I took a quick shot for those of you womdering about scale:
As you can see, the paint process has already begun! Juat a simple primer coat so far, but I think some fast airbrush work will get the container finished up nice and fast! Hopefully I can snag some time for that later this week.

It's nice to see big, functional and realistic looking terrain not festooned with skulls or too small to look 'real'... the fact it is velveeta... there is delicious irony there somewhere!

Post by: grey_death
I finally got around to getting the container finished up. Wasn't terribly time consuming, though I did mess it up by trying to do a big stencil. Didn't come out so I just had to go back over it with the airbrush.
I dig the solid color though and basic (see: extremely basic) weathering that was dabbed on.
Simple and done! Don't mind the terrible photo!
Hopefully I can do some more of these in the future when time frees up a little more.

Yeah, it doesn't scream "grimdark" to me (should there be an Orkmoticon for that?), but for Infinity it's pretty convincing....
Great job, looks almost like a photoshop of a Space Marine near a "real life" container !

Thanks for the comments guys
Rawson, Never really had Infinity plans for it, but more just general use piece of terrain. I wouldn't mind getting my infinity on, but it's hard to say when that would happen.
Gits, Thanks!
Yggs, Never had plans for this to push the grimdarking but I also don't think that every bit of 40k terrain needs to go down that route either. I do want to do a futuristic container someday though that might be cool to explore. It's simple stuff like this that I get caught up with

Git, definitely clean, but that's mostly because he hasn't made his mind up on battle damage or not I always try and guide people there, but it's his decision in the end!

Yar! Another Random one off model for Pesmerga's buddy this time. Was supposed to be a christmas gift, but I got caught up with classes. However I think the extra time to think about it lead me to a nice result
Was going to go very colorful and what have you like the studio version, but it just didn't fit the visuals in my head when I started. Rethinking it I decided I wanted to try and have a go at creating him with a much more monochromatic color scheme. There are a few touches of color here and there to break him up, mostly just gems and a touch of brown on the pouches, but in the end it was mostly shadow grey, space wolves grey combos that held him together. The metals are just Mithril Silver with Devlan Mud touched up. This was also my first finecast model and I'm not seeing a huge difference between it and regular resin in terms of modeling and painting.

The new harlequins are just stunning models... makes me wish I still played my eldar seriously. Nice choice of colors and design. The diamonds on the legs keep faith with the original concept while the color scheme makes him pleasing to the eye yet mysterious as well.

I agree with Git completely in regards to the diamonds and color palette. Personally though, I'd love to see some battle damage on him. That would be awesome. You don't see battle damage on Eldar models very often, it'd be a nice change of pace. Granted Eldar hardly wear armor, its mostly padded skinny jeans so the battle damage would mostly be torn fabric. They are also very small models, not a lot of bulk to emphasis the damage. Maybe dirty eldar?
Did I just talk myself out of my own dream of seeing battle damaged Eldar?
Damn, I think I did.

Thanks for the kind words all, always nice to get such uplifting feedback from the community
Tom, thanks, I'm really happy to hear the palette choice worked out. I was fretting about it early on' but as usual I felt way better about it as I got further along.
Git, I love the harlies as well, I have a small band of elder myself but they've yet to really take off. Glad you picked up on the diamond nods to the original scheme. This scheme really is just a re-imagining of it.
Ice, getting battle damaged elder would like be ok to achieve with the more armored guys and careful use of rusting and other oxidation styles. For high cloth models, it will all come down to the weathering of metals.

This turned out great, looks almost etherial which I think fits the nature of the model well
