Thanks for the comments folks!

DBM, it's only Bestial Brown > Snakebite Leather > Bleached Bone > Skull White. It's all in controlling the layering.

I've always liked chaplains. There's just something inspiring about their poses (termie chaps, that is) as they advance, backed by their unwavering wall of extra-absorbent paper-towels. Then again, maybe it's just the fact that they're never bald and screaming.

Yeah, I imagine so! The contrast between the highlights and the shading in the skull's sutures look awesome!

Every time I see one of your models that has wings on it, it stands out. You may have a simple 3 color process to pull it off, and you execute it so well.

Haha, thanks ^_^. This model is COVERED in wings x.x...Isn't a bad thing though.

Hoping to finish this guy off today sometime. Photos will hopefully follow tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Love the base on this guy. You've managed to get a raised rock base effect without making it look like the typical "fake" rock spire that we so often see mini's on top of.

The skull is really well done too. Never been much of a fan of the storm bolter on that model though. Something about the belt feeds I think.

Cheers,

Dante

Dante, Thanks for the kind words about the base. I really went further with this one than I have on any other project before this. As to the SB, I actually love this one! I guess it all comes down to personal preference ^_^.

AdrianG, I'm glad I've given you some inspiration! I'd love to see some examples if you have a link to a Dakka blog for me!

More work done on the Chappy:

He's pretty much finished. Possibly doing chapter specific shoulderpad and chapter markings. Basing will be getting a small bit of static grass as well I believe.

Looks really great.

Are the highlights on the red areas lost in the photo? If not I would give them another highlight especially the bolter's casing is missing some nice line highlights.

The bone and yellow metals are excellent and the base as said before looks natural. Nice way to get one more skull to the mini, all it lacks now is shouting

Girr, Thanks for the compliments, and see above for more on the SB ^_^;...

I want to thank everyone for their input, it's really appreciated. Even if you just said 'Awesome!' it's still motivation to get the project completed!

Yeah, I thought so. The reds are really hard to get to show correctly in photos.

The finished chaplain is pure win, the contrast between the base and the marine makes pop out. The shoulder pad and bolter give it nice splashes of color and the bone is really good. The best part for me is the small incense carrier ball next to the scroll, the worn metal is really great looking gives nice old feeling to the chap.

Thanks Met, I've been putting a lot more effort into my metals lately and I feel as if it's really paid off. Just using more washes and building from color instead of straight over a black base.

Val, It's a shame, but the blue really set the model off nicely ^_-. It was a much needed splash of color. Hopefully it was enough to secure the win!

Hi Grey Death, I also follow you on your painting blod/site and I love the grey on your Space Marines. I have been looking for a non-metal grey paint scheem for my Grey Knigts that I am about to start and the grey on your marines is exactly what I was looking for. would you mind giving a quick tutorial on what greys you are using and how you build up to the final effect. Also I was wondering, I know from your painting website it looks like you prime in grey some times, what color are you priming them?

I really apprecaite your tutorials and hope to some day paint a fraction as well as you

thanks

Alllllllllllllrighty, I've jumped off the SoMs-wagon for a few days now and have been commissioned to work on a small 2x2 demo table for Flames of War's Open Fire starter box. The local shop owner has asked me to do the table as he just can't find the time. And since I've been dying to work on some terrain lately, this is the perfect chance for me to scratch the itch.

The overall idea is to have a small plateau type hill for a small village/town with a road going through. The town will be made up of premade terrain that is already painted and ready to go at the shop. So really all I have to do is make the hills and the road, texture and paint it all.

To get started I just roughed out the shape of the table using expanded insulation foam board:

When the glue had dried I started in with my favorite terrain medium: Spackle!

I'm using the spackle to help smooth the transitions of the hills and get the angles of the slopes just right.

Right now the table has yet another layer of spackle on it drying outside. After that's dry, I'll do a quick sanding and start getting some texture on the table.

Stay Tuned!

Disjointed Entity, I have never played a single game of it ^_^. But I'm hoping to learn ^_-.

Dante, I've seen the guys up at the shop use full 4x6 tables most days. They FILL the thing with terrain and play for a good couple of hours.

Roleplayer, check the backlog of posts in this thread, there is bound to be a post from me explaining the technique.

Valhallan, He won! ^_^ And he is also now in his new owners possession at long last.

Late update with some progress pics:

It's all done for now. I'll be sure to get a pic with the full set of terrain and models up on here as soon as I can ^_^.

Ok, so here's another random little project:

It's an A.P.E. Grunt from Grindhouse Games' Incursion. This model is courtesy of Iorek from Adepticon ^_^.

I've been dying to get my hands on one of these guys, and now that I've got one I can't wait to paint it up!

I've also recently picked up my first issue of Wargames Illustrated that had two Perry Miniatures Plastic minis that came free with the magazine. I have them modeled up on square bases and they're primed and ready to go for paint. I might give them a quick run through based on the color scheme in the magazine, we'll see if that pans out!

Oooh, looking forward to seeing what you do with the Perry mini's, are they the napoleonics?

Thats a really nice base on the new mini, looks like a cool figure too.

What do you have planned for the colour scheme?

Cheers,

Dante

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2009/06/25 05:24:42

Post by: grey_death

Dante, They are indeed Napoleonic Riflemen, I'm looking forward to giving these guys a go soon, they should be good fun.

I actually used spackle/filler for the base on this guy ^_^. I have been pushing it on my website as a wonder-material for modeling and thought that it would work out perfectly for what I wanted to do with the base on this guy. I feel justified in the decision to use it as the final result worked out to be exactly how I wanted. I'm going to do a write up on the process with this one (I have photos of all the WIP up to this point on the base).

The paint will be pretty much straight from what the Incursion team did.

+++++++++++++

Trying some mixed spray on this guy to add some instant shadows.

And you can see the Perry Minis next to him ^_^.

Went digging through my vallejo paints and I don't seem to have the same paints as the Incursion team used, and I'm not really up for ordering more right now, so I'll just have to make due ^_-. Stay Tuned.

I have been a lurker in this forum for quite a while, but I had to create an account just to tell you 2 things

2) I think it is hysterical that you used what looks like a TPN research poster as your working surface on that recent table. Bravo

meyer, it is indeed my wifes TPN final project for Nursing school! Glad I could bring you to the posting side of things with my work and disregard for all my wife's hard work on her poster ^_- (she told me I could have it!)

Dante, to have someone of your caliber reading my humble experiences in modeling and painting is truly an honor!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and what I came back to the thread for:

Some of the subtle work I've done isn't coming through in the photos, but it's still got a long long way to go yet. I'm trying to figure out how to get an oil weathered effect without oils. I'm thinking just some glaze work with yellows and blues should do the trick followed up by very light glazing of some white streaks. My goal is to have a color modulation feel on a small mini like this. It should work out, but getting there without an airbrush and oils (just too small for me to think about oils) should take some doing.

Lighter weathering (than you're used to seeing from me lately ^_-) with a bit of dusting of the lower extremities, oil leaks with a VERY light about amount of rust should do.

C&C welcome and wanted as always!

Interested to see what you do with the oil effect too. How did you find the pre-umbrage undercoating? Did it make things any easier?

Cheers,

Chap, I was able to get that photo for you this morning check it out here.

SoG, thanks, I used Brown Violet (US Army's Armor color for WW2 if Vallejo has anything to say about it ^_^). Various highlighting shades and colors on top of that.

Dante, Thanks man. I think the basing worked out perfectly for what I was going for. I didn't refine it any past the dividing lines I carved out. I sort of gave up on the whole 'pre-umbage' thing. I just felt I wanted to paint a different way with this guy. Gotta go with what you feel, not what you wanted to try.

I'm fairly sure that's the 'as supplied' "power fist" for the model.

The guys at Grindhouse/West Wind have really knocked it out of the park with the INCURSION miniatures!

Alpharius is correct ^_^. The fist comes with the mini and is actually a four fingered fist.

I really love the Incursion line by Grindhouse. They are a fantastic set of minis with tons of character. Case in point: Bomberzombies.

+++++++++++++++

Got a good amount of work done on the APE over the last two shifts here at work! Tonight is a bit busy, but a lot of painting was happening this morning!

I'm still picking out details and finding other spots for freehands. A final set of photos to come as the model is finished up and varnished. Only about an hour left on this one, if that.

I believe Perry plastics are actually scale models (1:72?) which is why they look "weedier" than GW's models. 28mm Heroic models are out of proportion and scale on purpose.

This one turned out lovely Grey Death, Particularly liking the subdued colours and the contrast of the blood. May use that at some point myself.

As CmDante said, very nice blending, it´s a technique I rarely have the patience for... Also, echo the need for more piccies and different angles.

Thanks guys! I had a lot of fun messing with washes and slow deliberate highlights/blending. The best part is I never used the same color to highlight every time I sat down, so I was constantly messing around with different colors. Blue and yellow made it onto the palette for a little while as I added a bit of variation akin to what military modelers do with oil paints.

Just the same progress with different angles. Photos aren't the greatest yet either, some of the subtleties are lost (better photos when I feel he's done), but you guys asked for them!

Hey all, just thought I'd post something since I'm sort of quiet on the painting front right now ( doing some traditional art stuff right now! ).

I have decided to try my hand at sculpting some to get used to green stuff. I just received a set of shapers yesterday and I have to say, if you don't have them for sculpting, GET THEM. They are like cheating when you're using them.

Just did some random stuff to a Catachan model I've had laying about for a while. Added a shoulderpad, a beard, some rips to the knees on his pants, and two skull symbols done in the style of other skulls on the mini. All in all, I'm getting the hang of the green stuff, so expect more tests with it in the future!

Check it out:

Add some wings to the icon, set another challenge for yourself since its good practice, what goals are you aiming for with the GS? and what are you going to use it for?

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2009/10/02 15:09:16

Post by: grey_death

Gutteridge, I actually have been thinking today I will go about adding the wings to it. I decided not to mess with it last night as the skull was drying and didn't want to mess it up ^_-. I can easily see getting myself stuck in with multiple sculpting projects because of dry times >.>...

Overall my goal is just to learn the medium right now. Eventually I would love to do full free sculpts, but for now I'm happy doing conversion work. My goals right now are to create a Valkia conversion for my WoC as well as possibly do a Chaos Dragon conversion/sculpt from the High Elf dragon I picked up for my Best Fantasy Character win at BoLSCon ^_-.

Cool, we'll its good that you have set goals for yourself, maybe (i dunno about this, limited GS experience) plan your greenstuff projects so they won't interfer with the drying times, maybe just set mental deadlines like i have to finish X in a certain amount of time, organisation is key to sucess.

Keep on practicin on models you don't need anymore (like you have done with the catachan) is a great idea too (insaniak has great tutorials on how to do icons, chains etc, which would be perfect).

With your speed, i wouldn't be suprised to see those conversions in the matter of no time!.

Great stuff as I've already told you mate.

Gutteridge makes some good points. More organised people than myself can get more sculpting done in one session by working on multiple projects at once.

Also, practicing one old scrap models is actually a heck of a lot of fun. I regularly find myself working on figures I had previously hated, and really enjoying making them into something more preferable.

Round shapes are one well worth practicing. I still find making circular or half round surfaces one of the most challenging things to do!

Keep it up buddy!

Cheers,

Dante

wyomingfox, I'm pretty sure I picked up the firm set, and they're perfect. Soft tips I'm sure have their use, but for green stuff, I couldn't see using them being all that helpful.

Hey all! Sorry for the hiatus! But now that the Dakka Painting Challenge has finally ended, I'm back to work on 'other' things.

To start me off, I've begun working on a commission for some Space Marine Drop Pods. The goal is to clean, assemble, and paint to base coats.

For assembly, I'm keeping the pods in three parts. A method brought to light by Realgenius. This is purely for the clients ability to continue paint a bit easier when he receives them.

I'll update with progress as it comes!

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2009/11/18 15:31:20

Post by: Empchild

could be so the client could actually take full credit for painting the model?

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2009/11/18 16:56:32

Post by: JonnyDelta

Could be because the client *ahem* is regionally displaced and unable to paint, but wants to make sure they completely fit in with the remainder of the Army.

Credit will always be given where due.

Another reason for segmenting, is I plan to make interchangable Deathwind components, and magnetize the normal weapons system.

Edited one time because Harvey said to be patient.

Deathwind pods look so awesome, if only the rules and the price of the fw kit was worth it!

And a little something extra: Space Marine Attack Bike!

This was going to be a second try for an entry for the Dakka Painting Challenge, but I ended up being sidetracked once I had it primed. But it is still on track for some paint. You might be asking, 'How is he going to paint it?', and to you I give only this hint.

That said, the temporary hiatus has been treating us all well... The subtle weathering and blending work you've done on that APE really shows off your military modeling knowledge... I've rarely seen the effect done so well without breaking into oil paints. Kudos!

I'm headed out to GW Onley tomorrow for a pot of Mechrite Red and possibly some Boltgun Metal as well.

I'm already really impressed with how the airbrush works for me. I'm just doing the simple stuff right now trying to learn the limits of the new tool, but I can't believe I did without it for so long!

I'd suggest you give it a try on some paper or a test model. Thinned paint is definitely the name of the game. I'm sure you checked out the Airbrushing tutorial in the tuts section if you haven't. I ran it about 50/50 paint/thinner. I just used water for this first try and it worked out alright. I did use a little bit of flow improver as well too. Just a few drops and mixed it all together well.

I'm really going all out with the airbrush on the drop pod commission. Learning a lot as I do as well. I'm obviously going to have to go back in and do a bit of clean up here and there with the brush, but I'm really happy with the knowledge I've picked up so far!

The plan from here out is to go brush in the black and touch up over spray by hand as well. After that they should be good to go! And while this took a bit longer than expected, future projects should be much faster with the airbrush up and running now. Just need to plan things out a bit more!

I'm hoping to start sharing what I've learned from this so far with those of you out there looking to start using an airbrush! Expect something on TPC in the next month or so!

All in all it was a great learning experience using my airbrush on this project. I need some additional equipment that I'll likely order soon.

A couple of weeks back I entered a quick contest Jeff Wilhelm was running over on his blog. Jeff runs Dragonforge.com, one of many resin basing companies that have popped up in the past few years. I've never been huge into the buying resin bases thing, I picked up some a few months back during BoLSCon and while nice, they always seem to fall into one of two categories, too detailed or crazy for use for an entire army, or just too easy to make on your own for a fraction of the cost. I kept this mindset for a long time, right up until I found the Lost Empires set from Jeff. While I loved the set, I still didn't see myself snagging them due to cost restraint. Then, out of nowhere I check Jeff's blog and see that I'd won $50 worth of bases!

I came home today to see the package sitting in front of the door waiting for me, and since then I've been hard at modeling some spare Eldar I'd picked up from a friend. Check out the pic above to see a quick example of the bases and be sure you head over to Dragonforge.com and see if anything strikes your fancy. I'm for sure picking up more of these from Jeff in the future as I exhaust this supply! Also keep your eyes peeled for a bit more in depth thoughts/review on TPC as I finish some of these models.

Just a quick snapshot of the eldar I've assembled and primed so far. Still have a bunch more stuff to go. Apparently, I've got around 1500 points spread around my hobby room from some things I've purchased, gotten in trade or picked up from friends that wanted to get rid of them!

Airbrush parts are on the way which will facilitate the paint for these guys. Picked up a metal siphon cup and some more pots/tops/covers for it as well. Once airbrush parts get in, I'll be doing base coloring for everything at once! Stay tuned.

Took some time to knock out my first model for the Eldar! I've decided to go with an Ulthwe scheme for them, with a little twist to the black. I haven't actually used black paint on the model past painting the base rim. The black was German Grey airbrushed on with a grey highlight washed down with Badab Black and final highlights done using Shadow Grey followed by Space Wolves Grey.

I'm not trying to take forever with these guys, I just want to paint them. The farseer got a bit more time taken on him, mostly because of the details. Hope to work out more tomorrow!

Hey guys, thanks for the comments.

Scherdy, I use krylon white primer much of the time. The base coat is airbrushed on top of that.

DE, I think the greys work nicely for how much I let them show through. I originally planned to make it a bit more evident, but decided a more muted look would be more in keeping with the Ulthwe colors while maintaining my own spin on the scheme.

Thanks for all of the comments guys, it's always great to work on something that folks can appreciate.

Collins, good to see you here on Dakka, it wasn't a speed painted tau, just a painting night that everyone painted the same model ^_-. That was a red model as well if I remember correctly!

UCPes, Airbrush is really helping speed up my entire painting process. I no longer have to worry about the meticulous multi layering I was doing before for the nice even base colors, now I just take a few passes with the airbrush and I'm done! Careful use of washing helps the lines and plates to stick out in this case.

gretar, thanks as always ^_-

RITides, I do really enjoy the models lines a lot more than the standard suits. I'm also a fan of the FW models, which are heads and shoulders better than the standard versions, while still being big and beefy. I had considered doing more weathering, but decided against it since it would be the only model that had any in the army! Gotta keep in mind the force the model will end up in when you're painting for someone else!

Dysartes, I'm not huge on the post either, but it's more iconic than dynamic and it does make sense. The pose could have been worked out a bit better overall, though I wasn't up for converting metals!

Munch, Thanks!

IceAngel, Glad you enjoy the WIPs. The drivers head is from MaxMini's Steam Knight Helmet set.

I posted a Reinforcements up for the Warp Spider Exarch a week or so back for those interested!

I've also did a bit of a product review of the Lost Empires bases I was lucky enough to win as well.

My only beef with the Shadowsun model is that the helmet, while cool, doesn't look like an integrated part of the mini, it looks like it was jammed on as an afterthought.

I been following for along time and enjoying your work and helpful offerings.

I have to ask about the air brushing , I'm old school and just started to get back into painting after 10 years off. Can you tell me more about the equipment and basics behind airbrushing. Or direct me to a good tutorial.

Sorry if this is is a topic widely known I don't want to start from scratch. If there is a better way.

Again. I am amazed!

OI! I finished my Termie!

Was actually a lot of fun to play with the colors with this guy. I'll be doing a Reinforcements with more info on how I painted him for TPC. Zenithal Highlights did most of the work with some light brush work in the red. No mask, the dark grey I used for the black covered nicely ^_-.

I always knew these models were cool, but damn they look good when based and placed together.  This is the first set of 5 for my Space Hulk set that will see double duty as Angels Sanguine for 40k.  The bases are magnetized for easy and quick removal for either mission.  Expect a tip on how I went about this come Friday! If you didn't see the latest articles from this project, be sure to check out the Reinforcements here.

Are the orange bit going to be gold?

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2010/06/04 05:10:58

Post by: grey_death

Much of the detailing on the front will be gold. White Ultra's symbols and black/brown leather work to cap off most of the model.

The blues will be changed slightly with a few washes and some shading work with glazes in key spots. Likely using a red to get a nice deep tone with a slight glazed highlight on raised surfaces.

I'll free form paint the face as I usually do with no real recipe, just playing with the paint until it feels 'right'. I think the red overspray will work well towards giving a vibrant tone to the models face .

The cloak will get some wash and highlight to the inside, and maybe a bit of tone work to some raised areas on the outside, but that's mostly finished barring some additional freehanding. The red was all done using the airbrush (hence the overspray) and a subtle application of Thraka Green to the recesses. It was mostly water but did add some additional contrast. Airbrush made short work of it though, I'll be using it for most of my cloak work in the future me-thinks ^_-.

I actually didn't, I'm not 100% that the size I used will be best for everyone is the main reason. Any size that will get a good connection between the base plastic should do the job though. Just make sure you have a drill bit that will do the job!

I'd agree with Migs.

Sicarius needs something to make it pop compared to your normal standard. Either that or the lighting is wrong.

Still lovely work though.

With Sicarus I reckon the blue needs to be either lighter or darker. I'd personally go with darker cos Ultra-smurfs look quite good with dark armour. That may help bring the model out a bit more....

Post by: grey_death

Thanks for all the comments folks.

I do have to agree with migs that the Sicarius just feels flat. I've decided I'll end up doing some additional work on him in the near future. Punching up the contrast and working on getting a better lighting set up as well >.>.

The termies didn't catch much in the way of weathering, just highlights on the damage that was already present.

++++++++++++

The object of the last quick tip is revealed!  Still heavy in WIP territory, but much further along than I would have guess he would be in so little time.  This scheme really does go on so much faster than nearly any other I've worked on in recent weeks/months.  He has a good amount of work left though, to include one more stage of highlights, a touch of metal work, some freehand checks, and a bunch of detailing.

So just what have I been up to lately you might be asking, I was keeping a lid on it until I made some progress, well progress has been made and I thought I could get some good feedback from the community on him! I call him "Shermun":

And he will be GLORIOUS!

The idea is simple, Tank with Legs! The execution is where the fun begins. I have been pushing my limits so far with scratch build and am currently waiting on a Deff Dread to rip to pieces for spare parts . The walker in the bottom right of the concept sketches is basically what I'm after, but with a lot more detail work.

I'm learning a TON about scratch building already but I have to learn faster if I'm going to have this guy finished by August 21st. Oh yeah, that armor test in my last post is for this guy, and he'll be going into the Demon at Baltimore! Go big and all that

I would love to hear initial thoughts to him so far. He's got a LONG way to go, and all the input I can get from you experience scratch builder types would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for the early shermun comments ^_^. He's still got a LOT of work to do yet, and I'm stalled at the moment waiting on my deff dread to get here. Should be here in the coming day(s) as it was a flub on the part of the retailer I ordered from. Luckily though, they're sending something else along to make up for the mistake .

I'm not quite sure what category Shermun will be in just yet. Maybe folks will have some suggestions to that front as I finish him up!

For now, I've decided to work on the Warboss that was pushed aside as I came up with the new project :p. Here he is in his finished glory:

And another shot with all the boyz for good measure:

Shermun will be an orky construct. Genrul Pattun will be pokin his head out of a hatch .

Thanks for the comments, the white is definitely the main accent color for the orks. There just wasn't much space for using it on the warboss model unfortunately.

After Gamesday I knew I'd have some new inspiration to work with. So I decided to start a new project, one specifically for painting contests this time instead of doing double purposed gaming/high quality paint. I hit up the hobby store, bought two blocks of wood and got to work on one with the dremel. Added some green stuff and started pressing broken up rocks I found outside into it and molding the greenstuff down with my shapers and sculpting tools. The model was cleaned up for the pin, I've decided to just sacrifice a pin vice bit and drilled as far down into the block as I could while still keeping enough for the models foot, flipped the bit around and slid the smooth end into the models foot with a bit of super glue for it to adhere with. Sliding the other end into the pin vice again, it makes a great hand hold that will be fantastic for painting. I primed the model with grey and gave it a quick source lighting with white spray paint. The base is still drying but I'm already really happy with it. Lots to come for this one

Heh, thanks guys. The ADD will never subside, to the detriment of my army builds.

I've always had a soft spot for the Beastmen, I just never really felt the draw to make an army of them. Mostly because I have only as of last year purchased any fantasy stuff en masse. Maybe this will get me cracking on my fantasy chaos stuff more .

I'll see about doing some step by steps for the fur, lots of pics along the way should help write the article. Keep checking TPC, it might pop up as a quick tip!

Base Progress:

Post by: grey_death

Worked out some things on the beastman himself. Just being very loose right now, getting colors down to see how I feel about things. The skin is pretty solid in tone, just needs to be cleaned up in a lot of spots still.

The fur is very very wip, just wanted to see what color might work with the skin.

Also added another touch of contrast to the base stone work with an additional highlight.

Post by: grey_death

It's not much of an update for him, but I think it's appropriate considering the direction I've decided to take. Don't pay much attention to anything but the base and the skin right now. Everything else is just blocking out color to get an idea. But the skin and the base are two major breaks from the norm for me.

With the base I've gone with a much more elaborate set up and far more dramatic coloring than I've ever used in the past. I've yet some more work to do still though, mainly in the variation in the vegetation that will be achieved with some paint washes. There will also be some additional flora added to drive home the look I am going for.

The skin is within keeping of the hues established with the basing. I'm also making a concerted effort to keep away from black for shading, using various colors to add depth to the model. In the case of the skin, I'm going with a very deep blue with some red mixed in for a dark violet that will contrast nicely. In the finished model this will end up looking much darker along side of everything else, but right now it still feels very blue. If that's the case later, I'll add a little brown to the depths to punch the contrast up even more. All of this with an eye toward the lighting I've predetermined earlier in the paint!

The skin looks great, nice contrast and colors.

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2010/08/31 03:25:33

Post by: grey_death

I've done some additional work on the skin, so maybe this will show where the model is going! Also added some additional foliage!

Don't worry too much about all that black, it's going to be metallic with proper shading etc. I'm also working out what colors to go for everything else still as well. The cloth is just washed on to get an idea what i want to do with it. nothing set in stone but the skin still! Any clues on the coloring I should work with on the clothing? The fur is also still very up in the air as well.

To get some ideas I've looked up a few Satyr from WoW (thanks for the idea Pesmerga!) but they're clothingless with just a lot of fur, but it still might help with ideas since that's where the initial basing idea came from.

So, Clothing? Fur?

For like 6-7 bucks you get enough material for an entire army. Not sure what other colors are available though. Might be worth checking out if you are in need of cheap basing additions

Some warm color, like reddish leather, would look good on the clothing. It would bring needed warmth to the fig as the bluish skin and then metal will be cold.

The flowers brought some needed variation of height to the base, but they seem a bit too bright currently.

Great progress on the mini, looking forward for another progress shot.

I'm not sold on the flowers. They're just a bit of a glaring contrast at the moment, not really fitting in with the rest.

Wont the flowers shrivel up a bit over time?

scipunk, thanks, I really wanted the model to feel a part of his surroundings. I'm hoping to continue that with more use of violet in the model be it shading or overt use of the color on fabric/armor/fur. We'll see how far I take that though as the model progresses more.

Met, I'm considering a warmer tone, and after some discussion with a few other friends I am going to explore a yellowed brown leather. It will be a nice compliment to the violet tones and bring the model some life at the same time. The flowers were always going to be a major feature of the base, I just had to get them . They'll catch a wash or two of some color or another to tone them down and bring them in line with the tones already established.

Morgrim, The brightness was the first thing I noticed when I placed them, but a quick wash as I mentioned to Met will take care of that

Trilobite, they're not from a floral shop, but a floral section of dried/painted/fake/made for long term decorative floral stuff at the hobby store! So I'm not worried in the slightest about the longevity!

++++

To give you all an idea of how 'in progress' this guy really is, I took some more photos last night before heading off to sleep after trying a few more things:

I'm going to explore the yellowed leather more. The fur however I'm still 100% in the air about. Any suggestions?

The blue fur would work out better with a greyer skin colour, but if you want to keep it light, why not try a dirty cream for the hair?

Think sheep or goats, dark brown skin and blotches with dirty shaggy creamy fur, it could look good, especially with the base colouration and the flowers to perk it up.

Heh this is possibly the first time I have seen flowers on a model, and hey it works! BTW, I love the beastmans fur.

Post by: Wehrkind

I think Iffy has the right of it. The skin tone and fur tone need to be fairly similar. I wish I had a picture of the black and white kitten we are fosterings's belly after her c-section (seriously): the skin was pale skin tone and dark grayish in the exact pattern of the fur above it, so much so that with the exact square shape of the shaved area it was pretty funny the way the fur line continued sans fur.

Anyway, cat bellies aside, I think that one expects the beastman to have hair all over his body like a human at least, so the differences in tone without any of the fur tone anywhere else looks odd.

Still, great model and an awesome base! I am going to have to swing by the floral bits section one of these days and see what I can come up with myself!

Hey GD,
how did you build up that really nice skin tone on the Beast?

Grey_Death's Random WIP Thread - Finished Shipping Container pg24 @ 2010/09/10 01:10:31

Post by: grey_death

Iffy, I'm still lost on what to do about the fur, I'm still thinking on it and taking a breather from him to make sure I get it right.

Cain, flowers can really spruce up a boring base fairly easily. It's just finding the right material .

Wehr, I've been milling that bit of knowledge over for a while and still haven't found anything that fits. This model is still feeling more about the basing than the guy on top of it, so hopefully when I get back to him with fresh eyes, I can figure it out.

DE, the skin was painted with purple and whites, then shaded with blues and browns, and finally glazed with cork brown and highlighted with ivory. It was complicated and more work than I usually do on a model, but the results are different from what I've done before and really give a striking look.
++++++++
I've been taking a short break from the Beastman while I figure things out a bit in my head for the model. That's not to say I haven't been working on anything :p.

I've started working on my two forces for Dakkacon: Philadelphia, Orks and Warriors of Chaos. Some of you might already know that I have had these two projects going for some time, but I've decided that I want to have them ready to go for the big get together, so the added motivation should see some force finished .

The Orks have a Nob in progress that I've got a quick tip from for tomorrow on TPC (be sure to check it out when it goes live! Video included!!). He's not quite finished yet, but so far so good.

For my WoC, I've worked on a model I started a long time ago now, the Games Day Chaos Exalted Champion. I'm not sure that I even took WIP shots of him to share, he was a sort of fun side project, and I took the time to finish him off today, which surprisingly enough, didn't take much time at all. Just some work on the bone spots and painting his cape and he was done. Check him out:

A lot of wash work with this guy. The armor is done in Devlin Mud over chainmail scratched with chainmail. The weapons are badab black over chainmail with the same scratching applied. I'll likely take some time to do a Reinforcements write up on him for TPC that I'll post early next week .

Expect orks and chaos in the coming months!

Nice monochromatic look on the champ. I like the muted colors and letting the pose do the talking.

Thanks Met. It really is such a strong model that you almost feel compelled to let it come through instead of covering him in a bunch of harsh colors.

The beastman will likely figure himself out in my head in the coming weeks. We'll see what he looks like to me once he looks new to me again.

Munch Munch! wrote:Nice beastman! I also like the champ too. What do you mean by scratching with chainmail? Can you go into more detail please?

Glad you like them .

By scratching I meant taking the paint and dragging the brush along in controlled strokes along the darkened metallics to create a dinged up/hacked at/chipped/weathered/used look to the weapons and armor. Give it a try on some test bits before having a go at a near finished model though! Easy way being to use boltgun metal washed once with badab black and scratch with chainmail. It might be exaggerated but will give a good idea what you need to change in your brush use/direction.

Started work on a fun little project:

The model is from Runic Miniatures. Got it a few weeks back and have been looking forward to it as a nice break from the norm. But to throw a little more interest to it, I used a base I got from Secret Weapon and few other bits. The skulls are again from Jakob (although not available from the shop I don't believe), and the bird comes from a random fantasy bit I had from forever ago.

Priming to come later tonight and paint likely at some point this week

Nice GD, love the work on the pelt... looks freshly skinned. Don't know what could have been bugging you... he's kind of "busy" in the front... was that it? Not your fault of course, it's the model... but there's a lot of fiddly detail on his chest and abdomen that's difficult to sort out even when you zoom in some.

As far as I can tell, its the original unconverted pistol.

Nice work on the fig. As you said it's too busy sculpt as are most of the GW's character models, but you've managed to paint it in a way that it fits together. I like the flesh tone and the face as a whole and the metallics are great as usual.

Just to save some time explaining things differently, I'll just cut/copy from the TPC post

+++++++++++++++++

You never know when inspiration to start a crazy project will hit. What's also unknown is in what facility it will manifest itself. Last week I finished up a quick commission piece that I was doing for a buddy. Painting that Lukas the Trickster apparently made my longing want for a space wolves army unbearable at last and I found myself feverishly stripping, remodeling, assembling and converting a bunch of old models I picked up a bunch of years ago from a good friend who stepped out of the game!

There were so many cool and fun old metal models in the mix that I just had to make full use of them all. I have a strong attachment to the old days of 2nd Edition, and have always loved the Space Wolves from those days. A lot of the models I was able to salvage come from those very years when the colors were vibrant, the models a touch static, and the characters powerful! I was able to update most of them with newer power packs, weapons, arms, accessories. I really dove rather deep into the Space Marine bits box to find appropriate weapons etc. for the army to fulfill it's potential.

The hardest thing I found salvaging all of these models was making them fit with the codex restrictions. I had to create a few of the wolves from scratch to help build the army with a few extras as wargear options that could come in handy!

I had to strip the old metal models a few times scraped the paint from the recessed detailing with a wire brush. But in the end that effort made for a lot of characterful units with a strong tie to the old edition. Other models, like the Dreadnought was a part of my old efforts to build a Space Wolves army that never found footing and stayed locked away in cases on my proverbial 'Shelf of Shame'. Now, with that passion for the army renewed, these models get to see the light of day!

There will always be a spot in my heart for static models like the old Space Wolves characters. Ragnar is one of those models I've tried to paint before but got fed up with the over-detailing. This time around, after trudging through many hyper-detailed models for various models, I have more confidence he'll be completed!

Character models also make good double duty pieces for any force. You don't always have to play them as the special character and will be a good stand in for a mundane leader. But always having that option to go big points at the flip of a models rules is one reason I'm always keen to use them. Ulrik will likely lead my early small forces as his mundane counterpart, but once I start getting more finished, and am looking to play higher points, he'll become his real self on the battlefield.

I'm really looking forward to getting these models on the painting table now. I also plan on modeling a display board for the army. That could lead to a lot of future updates and tips as well!

++++++++++++++++

So I'm finally doing a Wolves army after so many years of wanting one. I'm planning a clean and bright look akin to what I painted for my friend. With so many 2nd Ed models, I just can't help myself

It should be good fun to break out some current painting techniques on some old classic models. I'm currently in need of some fresh paint pots, but expect things will go quickly after that. Most of the colors cover nicely, but I always give a little extra time for some colors (yes yellow, you suck).

Stretch, You'll need some sort of image editing software, if you don't have one already, search for Gimp, it's a nice free and useful editor that should work. Take a bunch of photos, pick out a few details you want to show off and resize/scale/crop so they fit nicely on one image. You don't have to show every angle of a model, just the important bits that really give a feel for the model.

Thanks to the folks who go back through this blog and dig around. It's good to know all that old stuff is still interesting to people . Be sure to check through my threads if you are interested in more stuff, I've got a few separate threads that are worth a read if you like this . Another thing is to be sure you check out my site The Painting Corps

+++++++++++

To keep this army moving forward I will likely be sharing a lot of the process of creating it as I go.   Things are going well enough so far.  Overall it's been pretty painless, with just a lot of armor painting in quick succession.  I have yet to delve into detailing each model, but will hopefully try and keep things going in much the same fashion as I have with the armor by going through every model with a single color until it's all completed, then moving on to the next color in the recipe.

The army was airbrushed with Shadow Grey to start off.  I didn't go for the airbrush on some models, namely the scouts and Ragnar Blackmane as they didn't have quite enough armor for it to be worthwhile.  The armor was then given a Devlin Mud wash to the recesses, not all over the model, but specific point washing to give them some additional depth.

The armor was then painted with a 50/50 mix of Space Wolves Grey/Shadow Grey that I mixed up in a spare paint pot.  Having this pre-mix was really key in getting the models done quickly.  I then mixed up a 75/25 mix of Space Wolves Grey/Shadow Grey as the primary highlight.  Again, this 75/25 mix was done in a spare pot to speed the process up.

A final highlight is currently being applied to the models as an edge highlight of pure Space Wolves Grey.  Used sparingly and carefully placed it really drives home the Space Wolves look from the old school.   This step takes a little more time than I had expected, but it's mostly because I want to make sure it's done right so that the lines aren't thick and heavy and completely ruining what I was hoping for.

Ulrik caught a quick blacking out of the armor and a wash of Devlin Mud to help fill in the recessed areas of the detailing.  I've always liked this model, but thought he was ruined some years ago when my dog decided to give him a chew.  I stripped the model recently and was happy to find that overall he was still in good shape!  He should go quickly enough once I get to him though.  He'll likely be one of the last things done for the 500 point list though, if he makes it into that list at all!

Expect more quick updates like this along the way as I finish more in the force.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on the army so far, and any critique you might have along the way might find its way into the finished army!

What made you decide to go with a brown wash as opposed to black? I'd think black would be a more natural shadow for blue/grey than a brown. (not criticizing, just asking)

The shots on the marines looks kinda epic as it is. The blue in front and the grey in the back... looks like they are seperated by mist and distance, rather than color.

Thanks guys

Git, I went with black on Lukas and felt it was rather strong. GW uses a series of brown washes on their SW's and it's far more subtle an effect.

I suppose that for a blue/grey color the brown shadows would "warm" it up a bit... I like it... and you're right, much more subtle. Just wouldn't have thought of it myself.

Black shadows are in most cases too stark, using purple, blue or brown will give more natural results most situations.

Good progress GD! The wolves offer so much possibilities for painting and customization, I'm looking forward where you will go now that the foundations are in place for these figs.

The past week has seen solid progress on my Space Wolves 500 point army.  The weekend found me away from the painting table far more often than I was able to sit down to it.  Overall I only think I was able to find an hour or two to put brush to models, but last week was so successful that I couldn't be too upset!  It also helps that it was my birthday weekend and that I got to celebrate it with my lovely wife!

All of the models have started catching detailing work as of late last week.  The metallic bits were all blacked out.  Pelts and tails have been painted Codex Grey and washed with Devlin Mud.  Shoulders have been base colored according to the pack colors and Great Company.

There are three packs at the moment, and each will get the proper colors.  The Blood Claws will be Yellow and Red, the Grey Hunters will get Red and Black, and the Wolf Guard will be Yellow and Black.  The design will likely be similar to what GW has done with segmented triangles to create the design.  I'm going to be painting the Great Company shoulder pads yellow and using Ragnar Blackmane's symbols.

I've started painting the metallic spots slowly this weekend, but thanks to the nature of detail work, it does take a good amount of time to get everything painted on each model.  I'm using Mithril Silver as my metallic color for the wolves, but this will be washed down with Badab Black, Devlin Mud and Gryphonne Sepia as the spots dictate.  Using Mithril Silver will allow my golds to be nice and bright and can be easily washed down for darker metallics.

I also went through and dug out my collection of Space Wolves transfer sheets late last night.  I don't know how much of these I'll end up using, but at the very least having the Great Company badge will be helpful.  I was a little surprised as how many of these I've been able to collect having never actually started a Space Wolves army before!

This week will be a flurry of painting if I'm lucky.  I fully intend on having at least 500 points finished for next weekend, so stay with me and I hope to share images of them as a Reinforcements update in the near future!

I had to look twice at this picture as the first time I though you had fog in the back ground obsucring the scouts, on the second look they were white base coated.

Great looking models though, love to see more of them.

Posted the final photos of the finished Wolves over in the showcase forum!

I'm also working on some Long Fangs and a Rhino to help make the army better for actual battle! Stay tuned!

After their first ill-fated debut on the battlefield, my Space Wolves were found to be woefully lacking in any real power and serious effectiveness. To help boost their combat abilities I've taken to adding new units to the army that aren't just hand to hand monsters.

First on that list was a set of Long Fangs. The squad contains three models from a friends old army that I was able to clean up and remodel. The lascannon trooper was one of my first models from my Grey Death army that had a clumpy and terrible paint job, not exactly something I was proud of having in my case. The sergeant was built 'new' from a bunch of bits and spare parts I had in my bits box with green stuff used to create the pelts and a beard. There is also additional green stuff pelt work on two of the devastator models that weren't explicitly Space Wolves models.

The biggest pain was hunting down old school arms for the right side that are needed to fit into the weapon. New style arms just can't fit right without a lot of cutting and remodeling, not something I was keen on doing when I'm trying to make speed a major part of this army build/paint. Once I was able to find them after digging around in my bits box, I was able to start looking around for a left arm. I ended up just using chainsword arms, sans chainsword of course.

Wolf Scouts have always been a really cool unit to me. Their story and their abilities on the battlefield have always made me want a unit of them. This unit was put together using a bunch of unpainted models from that same army I picked up. I've already gotten knee-deep in the painting process as you can see. In fact this squad was started at the same time as Ragnar Blackmane, but the day after starting both, Ragnar found traction and the scouts were set off to the side to get him finished. With the models around 30% complete, they don't have a ton of time left on the painting table.

So far they have kept to most of the same painting methods and recipes of the other wolves, the cloth being the only addition. I used a Codex Grey base washed with Devlin Mud, and primary highlight of Fortress Grey. Bleached Bone was then used to give the cloth it's true color and Skull White was used as a final highlight.

As a little bonus piece to the army, and since I've had the model forever, I went through my first model case (a fishing tackle box!) and dug out one of my first models. This guy was part of what I had hoped would be a Space Wolves army, but as I've mentioned before, that never came to fruition and he was painted as an early member of the Grey Death marines. Again, not a model I've come to use or be proud of after so many years and so I stripped the model down using Simple Green and a wire brush. This guy will end up being a part of the Wolf Guard once I get around to painting him.

I've got a lot to work on, but I'm hoping to find time in the coming week(s) to get more done with this army and hopefully find a night to get a game or two in with the new squads. With classes starting back up, here's to hoping I can keep the momentum going!

Over the last few days I started and finished work on a quick little terrain itch project in the form of a display board. I even used this project as a quick tip on Friday as I ended up using some ideas that were floating around in my head on this one.

Here's a quick shot of the finished board:

And to see just how much I could actually fit on the thing, I broke out my Sons of Medusa and piled them on! I'd say it holds a pretty good amount for such a small board!

Hopefully I'll get some sit down time with the Wolves this week!

Great blog.

That terrain is impressive.

How much time to complete? Also, how were the walls done? Did you repurpose something for them?

"It looks like there was a bit of a struggle"

Scott, Thanks. I think I started these sometime early last week, but didn't really get started on them until a few days ago. The things that took the longest were waiting for the paint/sprays to dry completely. Actual sit down and work time was minimal though. See the link above for more

DE, Here's the basing. and here's the static grass

A printer.

My first guess was toner cartridge, but after consideration I was betting on vacuum-cleaner.

Anyway - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Thanks

A finished Khorne Lord on Juggernaut:

Very happy with him. Hope you guys dig it as well!

The juggernaut looks great, but the rider is a bit lost against the background. That's a pity as he looks really menacing in his darker armor and what I can make out looks excellent.

Could we have another batch of pics with lighter background please

I think it might have looked better if the juggernaught was in a darker shade...(just not as dark as the lord's armour) or, if you did some effect on it (that would be cool)!!

Technically speaking it is great of course.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Met, I took some photos of the model against a white background but it just muddies the rider too much. He's very dark, very brooding, with a richness that's going to be nigh impossible to capture with my feeble set up. This is the best representation I've been able to capture so far. You'll just have to see him in person some day!

IM, I think the contrast works for me personally. It was all about differentiating the Juggy and Lord within the same model. It might be bright, but there is some depth of color there along zenithal lines where it darkens on the shaded sides.

Diggin' the Lord! I hope to see him on the table at Dakka-con; you almost never see Lords that are not also Sorcerers, which is really a shame (though understandable from an efficiency standpoint). I look forward to seeing this fellow in person!

I hope to do that. It is really hard to get figs him this to photograph correctly, the size is one factor and it seems that red is a difficult color for at least my camera.

Anyway he looks great and characterful, I'm already awaiting the next one you bring before us

Back working on this model from some time ago now! So far so good but still a lot to do!

Base is almost 100% and the crow has caught paint. The princess hasn't caught any work past a badab black wash.

If you want to see some more about her, I posted more on The Painting Corps in terms of the approach with a few more quick shots to show what I'm talking about.

Hope to get more done this week for this little one off model. I love doing these to break up the monotony of army painting

I've seen some very entertaining treatments of this particular model... looking forward to seeing what your going to do with it. :-)
