The Dread is amazing, but man I have to tell you the Terminators are stealing the show! Just... wow, you know? Hard to express it. The vision to even come up w/ that idea and not just go "stock", the execution, the sculpting... man I am wicked impressed and I stand by my word- you are the mighty Hyenajoe and people like your work.

Thanks but I can't take that much credit for the sculpting, I just have a dirty little secret method called press-molding, and it's a valuable friend! However, thank you for giving a confirmation of your words (have I already mentioned the french guys being subject to ego-burst?)
Actually lets face it it wouldnt hurt, if your head is exploding then the nervous receptors in your brain arnt going to regester the pain because... well they will have exploded. That would actually be a painless death
Hmmmm... it depends if it all explodes simoultaneously or not. For instanse the brain could go first and then the skull, or the other way around. or all at the same time. If the skull goes first then yes. You are going to black out from the pain a split second before your brain explodes.
@Commander Cain: Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I also like your work on the alternative Thousand Sons
Tyranic Marta wrote:
Are you using standar thousand sons colors for the tzeentch dread or your own scheme?
Standard Thousand Sons color scheme. I think it's perfectly fitting this army (and I had no blue army yet! )
I primed the second termie squad yesterday. Now I need bases for them (a bitz buyer reminder: when buying bits for a complete model, be sure that you've got a base for it )
Holidays are getting closer now, and contrary to some others, I looooove holidays (-sleeping, modelling and painting while watching movies, sleeping again, eating potatoes-bacon-and-cheese meals, sleeping more, painting again...-) and this means two things:
1) I will have a lot of time to paint, and might have a lot of things to show you soon (like, perhaps, my world eaters army, or my whole death guard, and of course TS);
2) the most important thing for me in the year is getting closer: the Christmas dinner! Cooking is my second hobby, I love to cook, and the Christmas dinner is the best time for it! You use the best recipes you know, using the best ingredients, serve the best wines to fit your meal. This year it'll be Crayfish with Cognac flamed sauce as a starter and Anglerfish in Armorican sauce with perfumed rice as a main. Wines are not chosen yet.
hmmm fish dishes, very interesting and tasty-sounding! I have been busy making vats of my famous Chex Mix, puppy chow, and other snacky-favorites. I plan on baking some more, but our Christmas Dinners this year will be slow-roasted prime rib and home-made chicken cordon bleu. No wines for us, beers and cocktails will be aplenty though. I prefer more earthy homeade fruit wines and lots of fresh hard apple cider, such is our midwestern traditions celebrating local farm harvests.
dsteingass wrote: I plan on baking some more, but our Christmas Dinners this year will be slow-roasted prime rib and home-made chicken cordon bleu.
Home made cordon bleu...where's the mouth foaming emoticon when you need it? What do you traditionaly serve with the rib? Apples? Potatoes?
dsteingass wrote: No wines for us, beers and cocktails will be aplenty though. I prefer more earthy homeade fruit wines and lots of fresh hard apple cider, such is our midwestern traditions celebrating local farm harvests.
My uncles who are still living in the north are great cider makers, and one of them had incredible fruit wines and mead recipes. As far as I love beer it's rarely served during a dinner in France (unless it's sauerkraut or mussels and fries) serving wine is more traditional
-white and slightly dry for the fish dishes - white (yellowish IMO) and sweet for foie gras - red for meat (the kind of red wine depends on the meat) and cheese (every red makes cheese taste great!)
Potatoes yes, i prefer mine baked, old fashioned-like, loaded with butter, bacon, sour cream, and chives! Usually paired with a simple green bean with butter and almonds, mmmm. I'm pretty good at pairing beers with dishes. English Bass amber or pale ale is the absolute perfect beer with fish IMHO. For Prime rib, I prefer a dark (but not stout) lager. This is making me very hungry!
Hi Hyenajoe. I've found your blog now.
(my topic is now a P&M blog too )
I've only watched the last few pages for the moment, but I really like the thousand sons look that you gave to the Demon Prince and overall to the terminators !
Their helmets look great, it must be a pleasure to paint them.
I'm always admirative with this kind of work, because I'm quite happy with my painting... but I suck when it comes to conversions. >_<

I'm glad you like what you've seen. I'm more a converter than a painter myself (that's why you'll see so few finished models on the blog )
I've also created some threads about my latest projects on the Warfo (I guess you know this one, right )
Time to get back on tracks and to make an update!
I've finally found the left arm for my TS Prince! I glued it and made a test for the shoulder pads and legs armor. Here's the result:
I've reduce the length of his middle finger (this way he won't seem to give the finger all the time )
What do you guys think?
I've also re-started to make flames on the Khopesh (my first attempt was not very convincing):
It's one of my first attempts, so please guys, tell me if I'm doing this right.
Now, the following pics are for Skalk and all those who made a LatD army using the Eye of Terror codex.
I' don't really have a shelf of shame...but rather a drawer of shame!
Here are some models started two years ago and never touched by a paintbrush since those days:
My Beastmen:
My Chaos Hounds:
and more shameful than the others, my Scavvies (still waiting for base colors and dipping):
Scavvies are looking promising and the Daemon Prince definitely is. Althogh I'm deeply disturbed by the lack of appreciation for Ale. Pale with fish, Brown with red meat. Proper Ale is a thing of great beauty.
Llamahead wrote:Scavvies are looking promising and the Daemon Prince definitely is.
I guess I should really stop modelling for a while and start painting instead. Perhaps will I find some time next week to finish them...
Llamahead wrote: Proper Ale is a thing of great beauty.
Amen! I tend to prefer beer to wine, but the culinary tradition of wine is really stong here and most of my fellow countrymen don't really appreciate a good beer to its true value.
I agree that painting may be your next step for a while. It takes less time to get that :hey I finished something!" feeling. I've been working a lot on my Death Guard and have produced 21 new Marines for the cause. I'm feeling a bit of anxiousness because I am buried in the Defiler right now and I have the new Land Raider on the way, will likely be here before the weekend. I've been painting Plague Marines "in between" becasue I feel so very close to being "done" with them, I have very few left and knocking those out does give me an ongoing feeling of accomplishment that keeps my motivation high to keep working the more difficult projects.
I know what you mean, and you're right. I got driven into too much projects, and I hardly finished anything this year...
Now, appart from my TS army and to finish my Emp Kids, I will try to avoid building and converting as much as possible, this would probably help me to avoid loosing all motivation. (and no new project in 2012)
don't worry, no new projects for me doesn't mean I won't show new things in general! I'ts just not new stuff to me. I have many necromunda gangs to work on, eldars, SoB, genestaler cult, Dark Angels, Blood Bowl teams and so on.
No new projects is not a bad thing, believe me, it's an opportunity to empty my drawers of shame and fill my shelf of pride
I have 43 scavvies to paint (among all the things I have to paint during my holidays) - some accidents might happen They're not as well painted as some of my latest models, but at least they're going to be painted and I won't be shamefull to field them ( they've spent to much time in their drawer )
All kidding aside, that's an amazingly impressive collection you have there and I am quite jealous. I know you'll make them look awesome and it will be a massive sight to behold when they deploy on the tabletop. Really looking forward to seeing how you work through them and I know the results will be excellent.
I wish to apologise for the lack of solid updates on this thread but to be honnest, my holidays didn't left me as much free time as I thought.
Even worst, I fell back into my old addiction: Blood Bowl. My local club is running a league so I brought my undead team back from the basement (my first GW models box, bought it 18 years ago!).
My only painting time was dedicated to this:
But no progress on the prince and my other CSMs
I hope to be able to post something new about my CSMs soon.
It's been two month since I last updated this thread nd I started to feel a little shameful about it
I had not much free time during the last two months and the last Zelda on Wii took away most of it...
But I finally managed to get something done, and here are the results:
Progress on the Sorceror dreadnought:
Still a lot of details to do, and the icon pole broke just above the limit of the pin I've used to maintain it...nothing I can't fix however.
The second Thousand Sons terminators squad is waiting for some gold:
I even worked on my Nurgle Dread:
Again, some details to paint but it should soon be done.
Now, for those who are interested in this game, here's my latest Blood Bowl team:
@tinfoil: I'm glad you like it! I was really affraid to do a messy job with the eyes.
@Biohazard: I'm trying to finish all my ongoing projects, after the dreads and termies I'll get some paint done on my World Eaters.
@Arm.chair.general: I'll try!
@Moltar: Thanks man! Now that I managed to get some free time regularly, I'll try to get much more done. BTW any chance for us to se some more of you stuff?
Now, here are some pics of my latest progress on Zahak, the TS prince:
I've added 2 snakes on the shoulder pads (this prince is named after Zahak, the demon king blessed by Ahriman in the Persian mythology, which had 2 snakes on the shoulders who fed themselves from the brains of sacrificed teens).
I've also reworked the flames on the Khopesh.
I still have some more flames to ad, but if you guys want to share your technique for sculpting flames, please, do so.
As a big fan of 1K Sons, I heartily approve of this blog. The conversions are really nice, the painting's great, and the hats are very much like the actual set's.
Zahak looks intense! I like the added snakes and think those flames are coming along nicely. Really excited to see this guy get done in the future.
I've been slammed with company visiting and work stuff for months, leaving very little, to no, time for the hobby :( I've managed to build a little bit, but not paint anything. Hopefully soon (maybe even this week) I'll actually get to paint something. I'm definitely ready to get back to it.
Next step is to finish the flames and the edge of the Khopesh blade, then I'll fix some minor details on the helmets before applying a black undercoat.
For some time I've considered to add some more Tomb kings bits on the arms or legs, but I couldn't find the bits I was looking for at a reasonable price.
Biohazard had the same idea for his latest WIP daemon prince:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/399556.page I fear it would give Zahak a too bulky look, what's your opinion?
So, I will start to paint him soon (understang within weeks) but there's something I still don't know: how to paint him?
Of course I'll stick to the original Thousand sons colour scheme as much as possible (for the helmet and armor) but what about the skin, eyes, flames...
I thought I could paint his skin a light grey or black with purple highlights, what would look better?
Should I paint his eyes a bright blue and try an OSL?
What colour for the flames? Blue to pink?
Advices are more than welcome !
Im planning on extending the shin guards all the way around the leg to look like his power armour from before he ascended. There are quite a few pieces in the Necrosphinx kit which would fit the TS theme perfectly. I like the idea of the pale grey with purple in the deepest shadows maybe?

Pale grey with dark purple? I keep it in mind for the tests. Necrosphynx is indeed a source of fin bits for Tzeentchian stuff, like the soul grinder I've built.
I have redone the flames on the Khopesh tonight, using a better tool. Here's what it looks now:
When the GS will be fully hardened I'll file the blade to give it a smoother aspect.
It's looking awesome and I'm liking the extra armour. For the skin wasn't Magnus the Red red skinned? So something with that thought of feel might make sense.
Llamahead wrote:It's looking awesome and I'm liking the extra armour. For the skin wasn't Magnus the Red red skinned? So something with that thought of feel might make sense.
Thanks.
A very dark red, or a black with some very light red higlights perhaps. A too colorful red might look odd among a blue/gold and bone army. I put it on my test list.
I've worked on Zahak these last days.
I filed the khopesh blade, undercoated the model and started to paint it.
After some tests for the skin I went for a blueish grey, allowing me to make an easier fading effect between the blue breastplate and the skin of the back.
I've still got a lot to do, and some parts of the skin looks messy, but here are the first results:
Advices? Opinions?
I've worked on Zahak today. I think it should be done within two or three weeks.
First, I've decided to give up the work on the skin at this stage; I know it's not perfect, but I'm finally happy with this job (after all it's only my fourth attempt in two days ) and I doubt I could d better before a long time.
On the armour plates however, I find some satisfaction, but looking at the following pics, I realise the blue is not as good as it looks IRL (pics are a bit dark)
Here are the latest pics:
So I've started to paint the helmet stripes, and when it'll be done, I'll start the gold.
Do you guys think I should go for OSL eyes (I don't master this technique yet and fear to end up with a dirty mess), or regular glass eyes?
I'm a little late to this thread, but damn! Awesome looking stuff here, mate. Your stuff makes me feel horribly inadequate about my own Sons conversions. I'd love to know how you did those eyes on the dread, and Zahak is lookin' mighty fine!
@inmygravenimage: I'll go for glowing eyes, the gold I've done today makes it mandatory as you'll see. I'll make warious attempts on a rhino part to se which colour would look better.
@dsteingass: He is!
@Skits: I'm glad you like what you saw here. Your conversion are fething great, I'm not sure I could do something as good as your heads! and I'm not mentioning your paintjob (Niu is my painting reference for this army - even if I know I'll never reach such a high quality!)
Small update: the stripes are done and I've started to add some gold. The problem is that the gold makes the highlights on the armor less visible and I'll have to re-work them.
Here's what it looks like today:
I would maybe do another very very fine highlight with a little more white/grey added to the base colour. Just in a few places for it to really pop. The DP is looking awesome though buddy. Really looking forward to you finishing it.
Oh wow, thank you! Good to know Niu's such an inspiration, hehehe. Man, I'd think you'd already surpassed my painting quality.
And yeah, maybe add some ice blue to the edges of the highlights, and possibly add a touch of white to the very highest edges/corners. Still, Zahak's coming along quite nicely!
Biohazard wrote:I would maybe do another very very fine highlight with a little more white/grey added to the base colour. Just in a few places for it to really pop. The DP is looking awesome though buddy. Really looking forward to you finishing it.
Thank you! TBH, the more I look at it the model the more I think I might have to highlight some parts of the skin too (like on the hands), even if I really wanted to avoid reworking on it.

Don't be so modest, Niu is a masterpiece, the best paintjob I've seen yet on a TS piece, and I'm far from being able to produce such a quality work.
I was thinking of highlighting with pure ice blue and a touch of white on the edges (I've used a 2/1 ice blue and regal blue for the highlights until now).
You were asking about the eyes on the right plate, they're made of press-molded Greenstuff. The original eyes are from a WoC knight shield. I can't post a tuto about it because of forum rules (but you can PM me if you're curious ).
Moltar wrote:I think he's looking awesome, Joe! Are you doing the sword's flames orange/yellow like real fire or adding in some tzeentchy colors to it?
I was thinking of doing the flames starting with a blue to end with pink. I'll use the same for my sorceror dread icon.
That could be dope. I was envisioning like a pale turquoise to a deep magenta, but I think blue to pink is essentially the same look and feel to that magical fire from Tzeentch. Excited to see more progress!
Possibly the reverse? Pink to blues? Just so it's a more defined contrast against the body colour. Also, it's the reverse of a natural flame that way, which strikes me as very chaosy.

Awesome, thank you guys! I could try the pink to blue using variations, let's say Tentacle pink to warlock purple using a light red wash, then liche purple to a mix of hawk turquoise and regal blue to end with a more basic light blue (not necessarily ice blue). What do you think?
inmygravenimage wrote:Yeah, I can see that working well. Possible take the turquoise up to green rather than at the very edges, so you get a sort of magnesium flare effect?
As I've used touches of turquoise I can mix it with white to keep a light blueish green. Have you ever painted such a magnesium flare effect? I'd love to see an example, it would be very useful!
Seb wrote:I love your DP. Crisp and very TS looking.
Merci M'sieur!
Today I've worked on the wings, here are the first results:
I realize that the pic is a little darker than the original model, sorry for that.
I have painted the beetles body turquoise with a small highlight, but since the wings are nearly touching the golden line beneath, I will paint the lower parts orf the wings white, and the upper parts golden.
For the feather I'm still not sure, I might perhaps paint them in a brass colour (rather than golden) highlighted to clear metal like chainmail. What do you think?
As always, any advice or criticism is more than welcome.
I've started to paint the feathers on Monday. I first painted the lower feathers (the biggest ones) with a Vallejo brass, trying to keep a thin line of black undercoat as a separation between the feathers. It turned out that it was a lot of brass and that the lines were not regular enough to be kept.
So in order to give more contrast to the wings, I've decided to paint the inner feathers golden, and I must say I'm quite happy with the result.
After basecoating the feathers with gold and brass, I washed it with gryphonne sepia and started to highlight.
Right now I'm starting to think I might work the highlights a different way. I think I'll go for brass to gold for the lower feathers and gold to metal for the inner feathers. This way I'll get a large metallic palette on the wings without having too much variations on a single feather (which would probably end up in a dirty mess - I know my limits )
Sorry for not posting pics today, but I have a problem with my camera.
You'll probably get something more visual in the next days
Thank you all guys!
I'm really glad you all like the wings, I hope you'll like the khopesh as well.
I've started to paint the blade today, it'll be black with purple highlights and pink to light turquoise/blue flames.
I won't be able to work on Zahak this week-end because I'm out for Easter, but you can expect a small something for next week, some kind of teaser for my TS squads
Echoing what others have said, those wings really look great and set the DP off well. He's lookin' like a beast! Have a great weekend and keep us posted.
Painting Zahak's blade is harder than I thought. I need to search for examples of black/purple bladesto find which way I should work on it (if anyone can show me such an example, please do so!)
I've started to work on the rubric marines, and here's a little something I'd like to show:
Hmm. Re sword: for my gks, i drybrush/stipple white onto black, then layer VGC dark green with some gloss varnish. Here I've gone for adding a faintly painted skull - you could do screaming faces, runes, flames or whatever really.
Using purple of choice mixed with glaze medium you might get a similar effect?
Just a thought, anyhoo.
WOW impressive work!
Like everyone else, big fan of the wings on the latest prince and the other princes (winged and snake) are also great too How is the plague tower going, I think it was on one of the first few pages... ?
RSJake wrote:nice! I have 5 or 6 of those backpacks! I usually use them for special characters or chosen.

Every rubric marine of my TS army will get one of those (let's say I have some good supplies )

Sadly the plague tower is getting covered with dust on its shelf. I'll finish it when I''ll bring my whole Death Guard back onto my paintdesk (that is after my Thousand Sons and Emperor's Children will be finished).
Hologram wrote:Your Daemon Prince has inspired me to do something similar for a Pre- and Post-Heresy 1k Sons army.
Very well done indeed, especially on the wings and crest. Cheers mate.
Man, if my DP has inspired you, I want to see the result! Thank you for the compliments
I'm still working on the flaming khopesh, and the least I can say is that it's more difficult than building and painting the rest of the model ever was!
When I showed to my wife my latest attempt she said it was a fugly mess and that while the model was looking good, the blade and flames colours were completely wrong. She added that I'd bette go for a purple to blue for the flames.
The following pic is a WIP, please tell me if you agree with Mrs HJ or if I should stick to what I had planned (as mentioned in a previous post).
I'v also worked on my first rubric marines squad and made my first attempt at an OSL with the eyes.
Do they look right to you guys?
inmygravenimage wrote:Flames look encouraging, I assume they're going down to a darker tone at base? And I like the osl on the eyes, v nice.
You're right, I've used a mix of lich purple and tentacle pink and I'll soon add a purple wash on the base -perhaps should I add more liche purple to my melange. Then it's tentale pink, and then again a mix of tentacle pink and warlock purple. After that I'll start to move to the blue.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Enjoyed catching up. Amazing work throughout. Looking forward to seeing more.

Biohazard wrote:Have you thought about maybe a black blended up to purple with the pink the extreme highlight?
Do you mean for all the flame length or just the flame base?
I've worked on the backpacks today. Here's the result:
The gold still has to be washed and highlighted, but it gives a good idea of what it's going to look like once done.
What's up with the Rubric Marines' eyes? They look like Sonic the Hedgehog!
So I guess for you the OSL doesn't look good on them right? Perhaps I should blend the paint a little more on the top of the forehead.
By the way, while we are talking about rubric marines, there is something I'd like to discuss with you guys.
With the rumors about the Legion codex, came the rumor about new plastic TS to be released. This particular rumor was supported by the ruined armour on the latest mounted wold lord:
Am I the only one to clearly see this in the helmet?
Does it mean we are about to witness the rise of the Cylon Sons? I know there are many TS players/painters/converters here, and I'd like to know your opinion about a possible change of aesthetic for the Thousand Sons.
Do you think GW would try to go for a more 'empty can' marines army in order to take distance with the egyptian aesthetic that so many bits producing third party companies have worked on?
I just think you should maybe dial back the white- IMO, for OSL you don't need a lot of brightness- just a dusting of a lighter color around the area. I've actually heard that the key to OSL isn't the brightening, but darkening the area immediately around the bright part, to give the illusion of shadow and light balances.

Thank you for your advice, it'll be usefull for my next try.
Biohazard wrote:For the flames I was thinking of you had black the full length of the flames maybe blended up to white then use some purple washes/glazes to tint?
It's close to what Inmygravenimage suggested for the blade. I'll probably have to re-do the whole khopesh.
Biohazard wrote:Hopefully all the legions get updated models. Gods know the Zerkers need updating and it would be great to see new DG/TS/EC plastic models.
I agree with you, but I don't think re-done zerkers or DG would be fundamentally different from what they are (I mean, what would zerkers like without the bunny ears ) Emp kids and Thousand Sons however, which had a terrifying lack of new models ( while forgeworld produced termies and cult troops kits for Zerkers and plague marines) might be really different from what they are. I mentioned the cylon look of the TS, but looking at the latest DE models I guess plastic noise marines would look a little more excessive than they are now.
inmygravenimage wrote:I think the egyptian aesthetic is now so explicitly crons that we'll see a slightly different take on TS, yeah. But, hey, do your own thing, bro.
You're probably right. I had not taken the new necrons in consideration.
You can be sure I'll do my army my own way, but I'm curious to see the evolution of the model range. The current CSM plastic models are almost 12 years old if not more, and the latest evolution of plastic moulding techniques are allowing so much things. I think the evolution of the cult CSMs aesthetic in the next years could be comparable to what it was between the RT era and the 2nd ed. The question is what direction would GW take for this change? How far can they go?
What's your opinion?
I personally hope they keep the egyptian theme for the Thousand Sons, it really has a certain iconic flavor to it that enhances their magical nature. I'd also like to see them freed from the Rubric or for Ahriman to return in some fashion to take command of the Sons from Magnus...probably won't happen since Magnus is a Primarch Daemon Prince, but it'd be interesting from a lore perspective.
On the side note (sorry) of Noise Marines, gk psilencers with the barrel swapped for those tank gun muzzles work really, really well. I'll take a pic later when near my piles of half-finished stuff.
Hey, great loking blaster! I especially like the use of the daemonette claw! It gives an nice organic look.
I have done some work on my TS army, The first rubric marines squad is almost done ( I still have to paint the sorcerer), and I think I'm on the good way for the flames on Zahak's Khopesh ( Black base with two levels of grey and white drybrushing then glazes -thanks to the advices of Inmygravenimage and Biohazard). Here's how it looks now:
What do you guys think?
Here are also a pic of the rubric marines and a small group shot of my army:
I'm holding off on my Thousand Sons army to see what comes out with Legions. Now, I've always seen a "Cylon" like helmet with the original 1K sons, and the Egyptian theme has been there for both Necrons and Sons, from the introduction of the Necron Monolith.
Having said that, I'm still actively collecting classic Rubric Marines, because I didn't see a major upgrade of the base Space Marine Sprue. I feel they'll make a new 1K Sons sprue (and Khorne Sprue, and Nurgle Sprue, and...) to stuff in a box of standard Chaos Marines.
Rubrics look awesome and I think the flames on the kopesh are looking really good, but you may need to go even brighter at the tips of the flame. Love the group shot.
Army is looking great buddy. The flames look a lot better now. Maybe just a little brighter at the 'hottest' spots but Zahak looks mean as right now. Great job.
EDIT
Actually looking at it in the group pic it looks fine. I think its just the light that is a little off in the close up. Nice one
Thank you all guys! I hope you'll like the rest of my army as well (even if you've seen its main elements).
I've added a little more light to the flames (a 1/1 drybrush of warlock purple and tentacle pink, ans finally some tentacle pink at the tip)
What do you think?
Here's a gneral view of Zahak.
One or two last details and he will finally be finished.
I'll be away for a week, far from internet and from my job, with almost forty cult marines to paint (16 TS and 24 emp kids).
We'll see what I'll get done next week!
I'm back from holidays, and to be honnest I have not done as much as I expected. I've just painted 16 rubric marines bodies of my TS army with a base of regal blue, and started to paint the Noise marines I had shelved last summer and pinned them to their Micro Art studio bases.
I've also finished to work on the modelling of my last Noise marines squad and my emp kids chosen ones the Sublime Guard.
Here are my latest noise marines:
the aspiring champion and blastmaster holder
and the Sublime Guard (I know I can't field 5 lightning claws pairs in a single squad ) :
What do you think?
When I'll have made some significant progress on the Emp Kids, I'll get back to my TS and finish my army.
Like the look of the Noise marines so far. i had done a similar thing with the blades from a chain axe as a mohawk on an old Zerker model I built. It suits the Noise marine a lot better though I think
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum, these are some fine minis. Keep up the excellent work and stay beautiful.
As for Brother Bar'Brah, the colour scheme of most of Emperor's children army will be Black/Pink/Gold. Only for the Daemon Princes would it be different.
These two squads have now been undercoated with black, and some armour parts are going to be painted with Vallejo Squid Pink before receiving a 1/1 mixed wash of Baal Red and Leviathan Purple. Then I'll do some highlights and add some gold. I'll try to post some pics soon.
By the way, do you think white swirls on the pink parts of the armour (as I did on the Sonic dread) would look good?
About the TS army, I'm still working on the rhinos and making good use of my Insta Mold bars As always, pics will follow soon.
Now, about something completely different, wish me luck since tonight is the first official match of "Les Tauliers" ("The Bosses"), my Blood Bowl Halfling team who are entering the Mead Barrel League's Summer Cup!
tipios wrote:Lol! are the trees the defence??? you can't lose
Man, I won! 2 - 1 against a Chaos Team, and nearly not a scratch, these little guys are awesome!
While I was recently working with GS, I started a very small side project, converting some old models I own to a Khemri Blood Bowl team that I could lend to some of the younger players of our league who'd like to give a try.
Here are the first test models :
The helmets (of which you can see a very early WIP) were such a fail that I removed them and abandoned the idea.
Next time you'll see my first attempt at sculpting chains
I absolutely love the Blood Bowl direction you're going! Man I miss that game. I took it out and looked at it the other day and have decided that I need more gaming friends. I like 40K just fine, but the same ol' same ol' same over and over... I want to play Epic and Blood Bowl and things like that for a while. I would LOVE to get back into BB.
You know, maybe I'll just paint up some BB models once I decide to start painting miniatures again. I have a small collection of miniatures that never saw the attention they should have when I was playing BB back in the day (was more focused on playing that modeling).
Great work all around (really liking the Lightining Claw conversions), the BB stuff just really caught my interest. I especially like how you are taking the old Hero Quest mummies and re-puporseing them for what you want them to be. Brilliant use of "old and obsolete". I used all of mine for my WFB army (back before there was a VC and TK distinction).
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
Time to bring this thread out of its cryogenic stasis for an update!
As I've mentioned it in my Gorkamorka thread, I'll soon be moving and most of my hobby stuff is packed, I've only kept two small backpacks full of plasticard and books, and my tools/bitz/paints box (a wonderful box, I love it). So the only things I can work on are those I kept accessible, which means no big stuff.
I was on holidays for the two last weeks and managed to get some work done on the Thousand Sons. 16 more rubric marines are nearly done, which means that the core of my TS army is almost finished, and I've started to work on the sorcerors and on the first rhino as well.
Here are the sorcerors:
The new GW white base is incredible! I've used two or three layers only to fully cover the black primer.
And here are the rhino parts:
I have to say that InstantMold is one of my new best friends! I still have to work on the front plate, but it should be done soon.
What do you guys think, should I put more arrows and chaotic stuff on it? Or keep it quite clean and simple?
Oh, and I finally convinced myself to work on a small imperial communication shrine that I had in mind for a while, to use as an objective. Here are the WIP pics:
A- the control panel:
B- the building:
It's far from being finished (as most of my projects ) but it was very fun to build.
And finally, good news, my beloved wife finally ordered my compressor, I should get it soon, and while it won't be easy to use it during the next few weeks for obvious reasons, I'll be ready to paint most of my buildings and vehicles by October
Kneel at the Altar of Communications, Brother Maynard, and utter the Litany of Sacrosanct Divination, while applying the sacred unguent, and pressing the button marked [Call]...
Looking pretty damn awesome so far! I especially like that shrine for some reason - it looks damn good for scratch-built.
Agreed on keeping the Rhino pretty clean - the Sons have never really struck me as a "ALL THE SPIKES!" kind of army, heh. But I admit I might be biased.
Briancj wrote:Kneel at the Altar of Communications, Brother Maynard, and utter the Litany of Sacrosanct Divination, while applying the sacred unguent, and pressing the button marked [Call]...
it makes me think that I should ad some incense burners and candles
monkeytroll wrote:Nice work on the rhino. I think keeping it fairly clean is a good call.
Great little comms shrine, loving that

Thanks fo your advice guys, I'll just add some small marks of Tzeentch and perhaps some scrolls or seals of corruption on it to make it more detailed.
MeatShield wrote:I would say you're nailing It. The shrine is a cool idea with great execution so far. Good luck with the move, and get back to us when you can.
Thank you Meatshield, I just hope nothing will be damaged during the move.
Here is the rhino frontplate:
Perhaps a parchment would look nice on it. What do you think?
When the core of my TS army will be finished, I'll work on its daemonic allies:
Got a NIB metal fateweaver for half price last week and I've just toyed with the base
I think I might build an alternative base for Zahak on this basis too.
I also got 9 metal screamers on ebay last year(I won't use all of them in the allied force, but it's a good addition to my daemon army anyway)
I have not painted these models and will strip them later.
And while I was packing my stuff, I found some interesting models I had almost forgotten (shame on me)
I guess it's a good thing that I'll get one more free afternoon per week with my new job, painting time is precious to me (and to the hundreds on models still waiting in the dark drawers of shame)
With the moving getting closer and the obligation of keeping my appartment clean for the hypothetical buyers who would come to visit it, I'm getting frustrated for not being able to work as I would like. However, yesterday was an important day for me and a great advancement to come for many of my projects because I FINALLY GOT A FETHING COMPRESSOR!!!WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I've been waiting to get one for so long and my beloved wife offered me one for my birthday (which was 2 months ago, but I'm patient).
I won't be able to work with it for two or three more weeks, but it's here... I think October will be a very busy month
Here are also the few progress on the com shrine:
rivets
neil101 wrote:wow so much goodness.. the big guy with the wings is fabulous as is the shrine..
Thank you guys!
@neil: I'm really proud of the DP, I think it's the best paintjob I've ever produced in 16 years of wargaming.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Those old models really take me back. Ah, the good old days when 40K was still officially about beer and fun.
Your scratchbuild skills haven't suffered from a clean apartment I see. Very well done! And congrads on finally getting a compressor.
40k, beer and kebab are still the best ingredients for an awesome evening! However, I too miss the fun there was until the third edition came (and the rise of the Dark Grimdarkness) when the game was colorful in every sense of the word. That's why I love Blood Bowl, necromunda and gorkamorka so much.
The clean appartment has its advantage (I don't have to clean the dinner table first before to start working ) but I can't wait to be able to work on something bigger, and over all to try my compressor.
Hey guys! guess what? This week-end something incredible happened: I had some free time to work on both the TS rhino and the shrine! These days free time is more rare than plastic squats on sprue
I've done quite a lot on the shrine as you'll see it here:
I still have to add some more details on the walls but I think I'm on a good track.
I've also made more side panels for the rhino:
Here's how they look on the rhino:
And a shot of the whole rhino (Special thanks to Tipios for the gunner )
I have no merit, it's a press molded GS replica of both halves of the back of Egrimm van Horstmann, the old WHFB champion on chaos dragon. I couldn't cut the original metal model so I asked my friend Instant Mold some help
By the way, I need an opinion on mixing or not the side panels. Should I go for 1 panel with a tzeentch icon and 1 with the chaos star heraldry I've just made or should I use two similar panels on a same rhino?
Awesome stuff! I love instant mold, hehehe. The shrine's turning out fantastic!
One small issue you might want to consider though - the large cross icons on the Rhino side doors make it look like those doors wouldn't be able to open, as the bottom of the crosses would get in the way and prevent the door from swinging down on those bottom hinges.
As for mixing and matching - I'd say go for one tzeentch icon and one chaos star on each Rhino, so the Rhinos are consistent. But that might just be my OCD talking, hehe.
eldartau1987 wrote:I do not understand instamold. Do you just press and fill?
Yep! You dip it in hot water, wait 20 to 30 sec until it takes the the consistency of chewing gum, then you press it against the stuff you want to make a mold of, wait again for a few minutes until it cools and take its former consistency, anf finally fill it with GS.
Skits wrote:Awesome stuff! I love instant mold, hehehe. The shrine's turning out fantastic!
Thank you Skits. Instant mold is really great to get some details to add to your conversions.
Skits wrote:One small issue you might want to consider though - the large cross icons on the Rhino side doors make it look like those doors wouldn't be able to open, as the bottom of the crosses would get in the way and prevent the door from swinging down on those bottom hinges.
you're right. I'll have to carve a space beneath the door to allow the door to open. thank you for pointing it
Skits wrote:As for mixing and matching - I'd say go for one tzeentch icon and one chaos star on each Rhino, so the Rhinos are consistent. But that might just be my OCD talking, hehe.
That's one for the mix
Biohazard wrote:Liking the moulds of the Helbrass standard. I'd go for one each of the crosses on each rhino. The Shrine is looking great as well.
That's another one for the mixing if I get you correctly
Skalk, you should definitely try to grab some instamold, it's truly awesome.
I've been cutting some almost straight plasticard stripes to work on the second rhino (and it was a painful time - no need to mention all the swearing) and I think I should try to sart working on it soon.
I'm progressively moving my modelling stuff to my parent's place where I'll stay with my family until my appartment is sold. While most of it will remain in the boxes until I find a new home, I think I should be able to make some significant progress on my various projects whithin the next couple of weeks.
Now guys I need an opinion on the development of my TS army.
I have 10 termies, a DP, Arhiman, more sorcerors than I'd ever use, 1 dread, 3 regular squads of rubric marines (and 3 more unassembled), 2 rhinos and a count as defiler (the Necroshpyx/soulgrinder conversion I'v made last year). I also have a looooot of pink horrors (35 iirc). What should I add to my army? another defiler? moar rhinos? a Land raider? a dreadclaw? a vindicator? a pony?
I need the wise advice of people who play more often than me (that's most of you guys)
I've found a great tuto to build a dreadclaw. I'll certainly give it a try this autumn.
I'm moving to Amiens (back home) whithin ร fortnight, but I'm still planning to go to the Games Day (if I finally receive the ticket I've ordered).
I'd be glad to meet you there, I still have last year's model for you, and challenging you for the scrap demon should be fun!
@eldartau: lol! a TS pony is certainly worth the new maulerfiend
eldartau1987 wrote: I think so too. I really want to do Iron Warriors but I am lacking the funds. I may try to find some way to make it work though!!
Bitz shops are your friends (especially if you're only interested in one variant of a plastic kit )
Now it's time for an update!
The move gets closer (next week), I've quitted my job last saturday, and begin the new one next week, so I'm happy to be unemployed for a week
To celebrate my resignation I went to my LGS and bought this:
I unboxed it with one hand (the other holding a cup of champagne) and started to see what kind of conversions I could do. Here's the first one:
I think this Helbrute head is going to be seen quite often during the next months .
That was Saturday...Sunday was full of win too!
I went to an attic sale, with no real expectations because usualy the few models you can find (if you can find models) are in such a poor condition and overpriced that I generally don't even bother asking for the price.
However, there are exceptions. for someting like 50 euros I got a GW transport case, a Games day limited edition model (the demon slayer dwarf) the whole content of the skull pass box set unpainted, tyranids, a dark elves army, a CSM rhino and more...
The kid (he was about 13) who sold these models had not even primed them and had a wide variety of expensive stuff. His assembling skills were forgivable for a kid, but it was obvious that he didn't care to do a good job with his stuff:
The reversed arms are a regular pattern Anyway the rhino was dismembered and I started to work on it as an addition to my TS army.
So, for the last two days, I've cut plasticard stripes, glued it, drilled holes and rivetted.
I've also made two more side doors and two more rear doors:
I'll add some more heraldry on the rhino sides before priming the three rhinos and starting to paint them.
Now guys here's something I'd like to show you. During all my 7 years of exile in Paris I've acquired a lot of stuff in expectation of the days I could get a proper gaming room. Now this time is near I'll soon give this little marvel all the attention it deserves. Forge World has released urban war gaming tiles? Pff! Mine is bigger!
Should I add that I also own an Imperial sector box set? Of course it's only 1m square, but I could probably enlarge it. Right now it's perfect for small games, and I can't wait to use my DV armies on it!
Well haven't you been a lucky fella? That board is great, we have one at our club and it's great to play skirmish on. Bit frustrating for tanky fight but kill team, 40-40 etc ate lots of fun on it.
@graven: what buildings do you use on your club table?
@Biohazard: Thanks! The oblits heads are so lame, probably the worst GW ever produced. The helbrute head however is full of possibilities. The table is one of those that were used in GW stores as 40k gaming table. It's a lucky ebay find.
Here's the last progress on the com shrine: Candles!
It's the last gothic element I'll add to the interior of the shrine.
The gothic shrine looks really good, Joe. The addition of the candles is a very nice touch and sweet score at the yard sale.
Couldn't agree with you more about the oblits. GW's biggest fail in my opinion. Can't believe they didn't redo the shooty ones and I'm not at all impressed by the CC ones.
Your stuff, on the other hand, continues to impress. Keep up the good work!
Love the shrine, it's a great job. How did you do the candles? We have some fw buildings, some urban war, aegis lines, and a fair bit of homemade city fight (for Infinty, Munda etc). Advantage of beings part of a large regular club! I'm very fortunate in that regard.
Awesome score on those miniatures! One man's failure is another man's opportunity. I love getting 'rescue' projects from eBay. Yeah, sometimes they are quite a challenge, but when you play Plague Marines, gunked up glue and backwards parts are just extra features!
Hi guys! Sorry for the late reply, but the last two weeks have been pretty intense and so are going to be the next ones.
Thank you all for your comments, it's very encouraging!
@Moltar: The new CC oblits seem even worse to me than the old ones, they look...toonish.
@grave: I wish every club I've been part of had decent buildings, but it has not been the case often (sadly some people seem to think that because it doesn't belong to them, club terrain doesn't need to be cared for).
@monkeytroll: Dark elves Cauldron of Blood, not Hurricanum (otherwise you've go it)
@Skalk: I agree with GirrafeX! You're right on the rescue projects, it's probably a good quarter of my collection, and it's the best way to find awesome models for cheap.
I don't have much pics but I have started to paint the rhinos! The top hatches, gunners and the missile launcher are nearly done, the sides are on a good way, and I'll soon start the interior.
I'll post some new pics of the rhinos soon.
Now something completely different: I' finally got my Games Day ticket (after one month of struggle with GW mail order )
I expect to meet Yggs there and to bring back as many awesome pics from the Golden demon entries as possible!
One thing I will say though, press moulds. Naughty naughty.
Then good sir, allow me to give you the following answer: the originals were made of metal or plastic and would have been irremediately deformed by the blade when I'd split them (even the tzeentch icon from the lord of change staff was too thick and had to be reworked). The GS replicas are offering far more opportunities and flexibility. Should I add that all this is done for my exclusive and personnal use?

Congrats, mate
Thanks a lot!
Unfortunately, I think no one will ever see this model...ever...It was lost by the staff member who was in charge of the Scrap Demon stand, or more precisely given to an unknown person...
But that's OK, I have the most important: the pics you took of my triumph and a cool trophy
My new Job doesn't leave me as much free time as I'd like during the week, but my week-ends are longer than before and I should be able to make some significant progress on my TS rhinos soon.
Once it will be done, I'll turn my attention on my GD loot:
I have at least a dozen noise marines to assemble to make my army licit according to the latest codex, 2 blood slaughterers, and some exclusive models to work on, alongh with my Dark Vengeance models to paint
Next year I'll try an entry to Armies on Parade with my Thousand Sons.
Talking of the TS, I've finally managed to get something done on the rhinos! I've ordered the missing element to connect my airbrush to the compressor I had for my birthday and started to practice on the rhinos:
I've also worked on the gunners the classic way:
And since I started to play with my airbrush I thought "why just on the rhinos?", so:
Sadly the pics don't show the contrast as it looks for real.
Man I feel like it's been forever since I've been able to post on Dakka and check out the threads I enjoy. I'm sorry to see that you're working on the Changer of Ways when you know that in the end all things come to Nurgle...
...but in any case it's good to see you working and posting an update. Really good work, and the airbrush work makes me jealous. I have to get one.
Thank you all guys! I'm glad you like my first attempt at airbrushing with the compressor (compared to how I had to work on my Death guard with a propeller can, it opens so many possibilities!)
tinfoil wrote:Great stuff as always, Joe. Nice to see some color on the models. And I'm really liking your take on a Change Grinder.
Hum, Change Grinder? I like this name better than the Soul Hunter I had in mind.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Man I feel like it's been forever since I've been able to post on Dakka and check out the threads I enjoy. I'm sorry to see that you're working on the Changer of Ways when you know that in the end all things come to Nurgle...

Come on Skalk, Papa Nugrle will always get some love from me (and I think my plague hulk needs a little more airbrushing )
But until I get a new place of my own (which should happen in January -I 'm back at my parent's place for the moment) unpacking too much stuff is not reasonable, so I'm focused on the Thousand Sons and dark Vengeance.
However there is one thing I was completely unable to pack, one large thing that my wife had banned in the basement for a loooooooong time...
One of my oldest projects (started in 2009), and probably the one which required more imagination that any other...
The only one which ended in shame and deception...until I thought I could re-envisioned it a few weeks ago...
And now it's back! (Roll the drums)
THE SILVER TOWER!!!
(ta-dah!!!)
I've only done a few modifications but I think the new concept you'll discover in the next weeks should look good (and less like an archaic flying coffee machine)
As you can see the cone has been reduced, it won't be the core of the tower anymore, but rather a roof to the main section whcich will be built from this PVC element:
some details have been added (and it's just a beginning)
There is a lot more in progress, but I want to keep some stuff for later (tomorrow is a promising day!)
Thank you all guys for looking at this thread even if it has not been updated regularly for months, it helps to stay motivated!
Here's the latest progress on the tower: the door.
I've started to build an entrance around the doors I've made two years ago. the incense burners are from the skaven screaming bell.
And here's what it looks like on the new central section of the tower:
Next step (after adding some details) will be to build the sorcerors' shooting positions, that is to say 4 smaller building (probably in the same spirit as my com-shrine, but that's not a definitive choice) at the top of stairs coming from the central section (I'm not sure I'm clear, but I have a good vision of it )
Just a small update on the silver tower.
If you browse to the first pages of this thread you'll find an entrance to the silver tower that I had built, representing a soul vortex.
(For the laziest among you:
Spoiler:
)
I've decided to sculpt something similar and to make a mold of it that I could use to build "windows" on the silver tower.
Here's how it looks:
Thanks! I'm curious to see what I'll get in the end, perhaps it will be ugly, but at least it made me think more seriously of casting my own creations for press-molding.
Loricatus Aurora wrote:Great thread, grats on the win.
Lost mini deserves a bollocking! Especially at sanctioned event.
Rhino is looking awesome.
Thanks man! Yes I'd have been glad to bring the model back home, but I still have the trophy
So, after the test with the vortex will be done, I'll work on the wizzards shooting positions. I'm thinking of using a new material for it, but you'll see about it later.
It's been more than four months since I last updated this thread, I think I've beaten my own record!
Nothing new about the silver tower, however, I've found a material that will be very helpful on this project.
I've done a little work on the Thousand Sons:
And I've started a sorcerer to use as HQ (combined with Zahak, the Daemon Prince, it should work just fine)
It's just a regular CSM sorcerer, with the left arm of the Doomrider on which I've opened the hand.
I've also started to work on twelve more Noise marines (since with the new codex, I can't use blastmasters in squads of less than ten men).
For some of them I've ordered some Kromlech heads:
.
Now something completely different.
Now that I have a basement in which I have installed a working space, I've started to work on something I wished to do for a while:
rebuilding the old cardboard Imperial Bastion.
A while ago, a good soul had provided to me the pdf scans of the elements, and I really wanted to give it a try, but it would have implied far too much plasticard.
Recently I've discovered a variant of styrene sheet used to make commercial signs. It's cheap, easy to cut and perfect to build the main structures of such a building.
Here are the first pics of the bastion:
(note on this last pic, the platform is perpendicular to th rest of the building, it's a problem with the angle of the pic)
This original building implied the use of bulkheads, but since I ran low on these (and keeping the last ones I have for when I'll really need them) I'm building an alternative:
Any advice or opinion?
Since I'll soon have holidays, you can expect more to come soon!
This styrene sheets are a wonder to work with, so easier to cut than the classic plasticard, ans cheaper too! It would be perfect to build eldar terrain!
I'll use some on the silver tower after the bastion will be finished.
Here are the latest progress on the bastion:
I've added walls on the rear:
The first layer of the "proto-bulkehead" has been glued:
The rear platform/walkway will be made of textured plasticard reinforced with styrene:
like this:
and placed here:
I think I'll add some pilars under the platform. Any suggestion?
1) Can you identify/show us where you get the signage sheets?
In a local generalist hardware supermarket in the 'cut on demand' aisle with the mdf boards.
Theophony wrote:That bastion is coming along quickly. Thanks for the PDFs again.
What thickness are those sheets. Might have to try them out after I work through my plastic arid pile?
It's 3mm thick sheet. As Blachand said, it's worth gold (not in price ) but working with it is wonderful!
Here are my latest progress on the bastion:
I've finished the second part of the main walkway
I've also built the other walkways:
and started to hide the gaps in the main walls at the rear of the bastion, using plasticard to make some extra armor:
Now, I'll have to work seriously on the replacement of the external bulkheads. I'll try to get some inspiration from the original bulkheads (and might give a try at the plans Dave posted on my Gorkamorka thead.
If anyone has any idea, please, tell me.
I love the look of the building, but I wanted to comment on your Noise Marines. They've been FAQ'd, and you can take one Blast Master with less than 10 models, and another at 10 models. Just thought you'd like to know! Carry on then!
RSJake wrote: I love the look of the building, but I wanted to comment on your Noise Marines. They've been FAQ'd, and you can take one Blast Master with less than 10 models, and another at 10 models. Just thought you'd like to know! Carry on then!
Thank you for the info Jake, one of my problem is solved (making my new noise marines to fit the look of my squads). I'll reconsider all my new noise marines according to this, whith probably a new squad (with the Kromlech heads), and reinforcements for two of the existing squads. I've also got some new WHFB forsaken heads I wished to use on my Emp Kids. I'll soon show you what's the result's going to be.
@Nathanie1: Thank you man!
Since I'm not working today and tomorrow, expect some new stuff to pop very soon
Your scratch build skills continue to impress, and while I don't always post I do stop by every time I see this thread bumped to the top of my subb'd threads.
I've also made progress on my entry for the -=]_,=- contest.
I've even started another shrine. One of them will be for my sisters of battle, the other one will be a corrupted shrine dedicated to Grandpa Nurgle (I think you'll love this one Skalk, I have a LOT of ideas for this one).
I will try to work on some handrails for the walkways of the bastion tomorrow.
Passing this along for some inspiration- there's a guy I've been sharing Cultists stuff with for quite a while and he's recently stated making terrain. His temple is very well done. Check it out at the bottom of this page http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/330/386133.page and follow from there. The stained glass really pulls the piece together.
The rest of his stuff is really cool as well, but specifically check out the temple.
@GiraffeX: Yes I think that broken stain glass would be the kind of details that make the difference
@Vik: welcome on board (again )
@Dave: Yes! that's it, PVC foam sheet! I wasn't sure of the name of the material, but that's it. As I already mentioned it, it's wonderfull to work with, it's so easy to cut.
@Skalk: nice temple indeed! I like his stain glass work. While I think intact windows are not to be seen on a ruin, I'll take a closer look at his technique to see what I can do.
No pics today, since the only thing I've done is another shrine and that it's the exact replica of the first one.
This second shrine will be my temple of Nurgle. I already have some braseros an a couple of nurgle icons from the warshrine. I could probably use half a load of the vampire counts corpse cart too.
What do you think?
For the SoB Shrine, I'll use instant mold to make a GS statue for the saint's tomb, and I still have some Icons and even a Fleur de Lys panel from the immolator.
Hyenajoe wrote: @Skalk: .... While I think intact windows are not to be seen on a ruin ...
That is something I've been struggling with since I started my terrain project (with ruins in particular) especially since I have started my Necromunda terrain, where centuries of construction and reconstruction have occurred generation after generation.
Neglect is a slow rot that takes things down bit by bit. Fire guts and leaves hollow shells. Explosions rip apart in every direction. All of these things can happen in the same neighborhood over time. A freshly abandoned building may have only some visible wear. A centuries-old building may still stand majestic and strong. The damage of recent fire will be sharp and contrasted.
Different things break in different ways at different times. A house that explodes and burns down will have a more dramatic effect than a house that is abandoned and slowly caves in on itself, but they can be side by side during each process. On and on and on. You can see where this is going.
I have thought about the stain glass question, and I will go for partially intact glass in the upper parts and the corners of the windows, and a special one for the nurgle shrine.
I've carved a stonewall patern on the walls of the shrine:
Doing this is quite easy, the PVC foam is soft enough to keep the motives I've applied with a nail-like tool.
However, I managed to do a complete mess on the second attempt on the first piece of wall:
I'll have to draw more irregular lines to hide the I've done in the upper part, and I'll have to do the same irregular job on the whole second shrine.
About the bastion, I thought I could use the pieces of PVC foam I've made by cutting out the windows of the shrines on the proto-bulkheads, like this:
With rivets, plasticard stripes, and some GS and bits, I might end up with something not too bad, what do you guys think?
New ideas never go over without a hitch, that's why I'm on version 6.7 of my helping hand tool . Have you thought about using that round window opening on the nurgle temple to stack three skulls, or three marine helmets in? You can have blood oozing down from there then.
Well, I think I could ultimately blow the miscarved part, but the vines equivalent or battle damages could do the trick.
@OneManNoodles: what do you mean by covering the joints and windows?
@theophony: I'll use the nurgle icons from the warshrine as ornaments on the nurgle shrine, I have a special stain glass idea for the round window. Marines heads, blood pools and rotten pieces of corpes would be nice details.
I've finished to carve the walls of the first shrine, I've also finished the ground and the platforms.
What do you think?
On the third pic you see the empty space of the tomb in which I'll put the statue of the saint.
The statue will be made of GS, using a instant mold of this model:
I'll try to make some similar progress on the shrine of Nurgle this evening, and to have some work done ont the bastion. I'm on holiday until friday, so I think I would have no excuse for not finishing at least one of these projects.
Patience? I wouldn't say that, but since you're living on a distant continent, it justifies the fact that you didn't hear me swear (I'm pretty sure Vik has heard something )
I'm glad you like the textures, it was a completely new way of working for me, and I feared to screw it.
Here are the latest progress on the SoB shrine.
The statue (with one missing leg - the GS is still curing)
Now in place:
All the platforms are in place:
The outside steps are in place too:
Now I have to do add some columns to the arks before working on the base. Then it will be time for some paint.
You can also make a really nice pitted effect to the stone by just hammering an awl or other pointy or blunt metal object against it. I did that with this Fallout dio
This was before the final paintjob, the pitting takes shade really well.
Yggdrasil wrote:Looks awesome mate, but... Ain't that waaaayyyyy too much work ???
You're right, I'm probably loosing my time on this. I should do something more constructive, like... no, I can't see what
Viktor von Domm wrote:cool statue there hyenajoe!... would love to get my hands on such things
and the ruin is coming along very cool looking! great looking progress monsieur!
Thank you Vik, perhaps, since I have some free time ahead and a decent quantity of GS, I might try to make a second statue for exportation (and why not a third, just in case )
inmygravenimage wrote:In no way would I like a copy of that gs molded figure for my sob Shrine...
In no way you would get one (except if you ask for it )
Theophony wrote:Excellent work n the temple and the stone . Are you going with more of a grey stone color, white, or tan for he building?
I'll try to reproduce the original colours of the shrine, a greenish grey for the outside, and a warmer colour for the inside (is it what you suggest by 'tan'?) and a classic marble on the floor.

Awesome , I will try this on a test piece of pvc to see how it works and if I manage to do something correct, I'll try this on the stonewalls.
This afternoon I took a break from the shrine to have something done on the bastion.
I've added a handrail on the main rear walkway:
I'll try to finish the main tower of the bastion to see where else I could do the same thing.
I had a scratch awl that the sharp point broke off, and I never throw tools away.. so I just stabbed it into it for the pock marks, then scratched cracks and gouged out bits here and there. you could experiment with all sorts of metal tools for different sized pits.
you do know safety always comes first, right? so to keep your needful things at hand you gotta make some precautious steps
Thank you Vik, perhaps, since I have some free time ahead and a decent quantity of GS, I might try to make a second statue for exportation (and why not a third, just in case )
Guys, after working on PVC foam sheet for some time, I almost forgot how hard it can be to cut small surfaces out of 1.25mm plasticard.
I've been working on the replacement for the external bulkheads since yesterday, here is the result (it's not finished, but at least I finally know where I'm goingwith these)
@Dave: The butresses took quite some time and blades (the first side layers were made out of a too thick plasticard). I'd really like to be able to cast such things and make some resin copies, but I'm affraid it's far above my actual skills (plus the resin and silicon I'd need are not so easy to find around here...). Since you've posted the necromunda bulkhead plans on my ork terrain thread, I kept in mind that one day I should try to build my own bulkheads and to cast them, but the problem would be casting it.
@Theophony: If only you had some bastion plans to use them on
@Inmygravenimage: I'll use as many elements from this etched brass kit as I can. There are so many possibilities with it!
@Yggs: Well, I have more time and room to practice, which is helpful if you want to practice I hope you'll like the final result.
Here's just a test assembling of the left side of the bastion:
Wow Joe, you're just leaping forward with skill. The arches aren't an issue, you can simply use a molding to edge the windows (which really, you should do anyway). The stone effects that you CARVED BY HAND is stunning. The railing and walkway makes me jealous, and your arches are so detailed that I am going to have to copy them once I start working on my platform detail.
This really is great stuff. I'm always impressed w/ your skill and your imagination.
@Skalk: Thanks man! I would really like to see your take on the arches.
@Yggs: Yep, I've moved into a house in January, after nearly three months at my parents place. I now have a gaming room in the basement, and a permanent painting and modelling desk (plus enough space for all the terrain I was dreaming of).
Here is the latest progress on the bastion.
I've made another bulkhead replacement (the HJ Pattern Bulkhead Mk3 )
There is still much more work to do, but now that I've solved the bulkheads problem, I feel it's far easier to work on the bastion.
Technically, GW can kiss your heiney if it's only for your own personal use and it isn't being sold. If you're not taking it to Games Day or another GW/Nazi event, who cares?
@Dave: Galorn is an option and I'll probably try to contact him, but soon or later, I'll have to find a way to cast my own stuff myself (especially considering cost of shipping to and from the USA which recently increased)
About the Aquilla, keep in mind that the bulkheads I've done until now are just prototypes made for the bastion, and while I could sculpt an icon of my own as Vik suggested it, when I'll build some more definitive versions, for casting purpose, I think I'll avoid any determined symbol, leaving blank spaces to allow people to use the symbol of their choice (aquillas, chaos stars, or a symbol I'll make).
To build more precise bulkheads I need to find sone new cutting tools, to make straight and precise cuts. Any recommandations?
Blank spaces is a great idea! Foamcore is really your problem, The stuff naturally fights you and dulls blades, not the tools, a sharp blade and a straightedge are the best tools you can get.
a steel ruler for preference... but anything with a...wait for it...straight edge... would work...
I have built me a quite complex setup with many different sized wooden rules that I can put together to make straight cuts ... I really should be taken some pics of said setup to enlighten you all... but that would need cleaning up everything first...
Preferably one wide enough to hold onto without getting your fingers in the way of the blade, a cork-backing also helps it not to slip.
Stainless steel also lets you mark measurements with a pencil or pen which you can easily wipe away when not needed.
For measuring, it is important to get one that starts with 0 on the edge
I use 2 of them, an 18" (45cm) and a 6" (15cm)
A Thin-beam square is also infinitely useful for this type of work, especially when working with scraps with no factory edge
Vik's method with wood strips also works, but wood is soft and will dull your blades almost instantly.
well... the wooden stuff i use is just a way of measureing and keeping my cuts in line... i am terrible when it comes down to measuring stuff... and for some weird circumstances we only have cheap unthrustworthy rules from older schooldays at home... you never know for sure what you just measured...
so i let my wooden rules specially sawed at our hardware shop... and even tho they cet sometimes cut or roughed a bit due to my work... they have boosted my productivity no end...
will try to get some pics of the whole thing tomorrow...
I use such a steel ruler, but it's not as wide as those you've shown and my main problem is that it's constantly slipping... I had never thought of adding some anti-slipping material beneath...
I'm curious to see you're device Vik.
This was a crappy week-end, both my daughter and my wife were sick and I had no more than an hour for me.
However, I managed to start a new and more precise bulkhead using the same base as on the bastion side entries:
(which looked like that)
The new one has been more precisely cut and I've started to work on the stripes and layers of plasticard which will give it its texture.
I've no pic of this new bulkhead yet but you can expect one during the next days.
As promised, here's a first WIP pic of the bulkhead I wish to cast:
I've cut enough small rivet to glue between thin stripes of card all along the edges.
Here's also the rear side of the first bulkheads (those with the butresses)
Any idea of what I could add to the bottom to make it less...empty?
You just need to ensure you eliminate any and all undercuts when designing for casting, it's difficult, but you have to think like liquid..lazy as well as being able to get the casting out of the mold.
Guys, I had a long and productive modeling evening!
First, the 'to-be-casted' bulkhead has evolved since you've seen it the last time.
I've added smaller stripes of plasticard on it, but I wasn't happy with the door (not straight enouh)
So I've removed the door and replaced it with thicker plasticard before adding rivets and some thin stripes to build a small metallic structure at the top of the bulkhead.
Now it's looking like that:
After that, I've decided to try somehting similar on the two side doors of the bastion:
But after that it was nearly midnight so I've left the rest of the riveting job for later (tonight if possible).
You'll notice on this last pic that the wall on the left is not straight. It will be covered with a L shaped piece of plasticard.
Now it's time for my sunday breakfast: Bacon, eggs, molten cheddar and coffee, me voila!
Mmm... Bacon and Eggs, yeah, I'm down with that. No Irn-bru bar? Bulkhead looks ace, and I think you'll definitely have a market here at least (raises hand expectantly)
Guys, after a busy and terrible week, I've finally managed to assemble the tower!
Of course there are still many things to fix (the walkways are too long and I have to hide it), plus many things to add to the main structure to make it less...empty. But I feel satisfied to see a project advancing at a (nearly) regular pace!
Here are the latest pics:
I have to build some ladders between the 1st and 2nd floor on each side, and more details almost everywhere on the main structure.
I also have to build at least three more bulkhead like doors (the front and rear entrances + the 2nd floor entrance), and I'm serioulsy thinking of giving a try at casting with the material I have gathered (I have some silicone for the mold, but I only have some cristal resin to pour into.).
Once all this will be done, I'll give it a base and airbrush it.
that built looks very cool...and all these wallsections have lots of possible uses... i see it as a modular terrainset just like the professionals do... very well done mister!
@Vik: Thank you. You are right, once the bastion will be done, I will re-build some more precise butresses and bulkheads for casting, with the intention of ending with a modular kit.
It will be helpful for the firebase to come and if the result is satisfying, I could try to send some across the world .
You are leaping forward in skill and ability, quickly becoming one of the better scratch builders I've seen on Dakka. Your work has always been great, but this piece really shows your progress. Excellent work.
Thank you guys! Your comments are really motivating!
Sorry for the late reply, I was driven away from modelling by other hobbies: RPG and LARP. I have to build a scarab mask and a cybernetic arm for a Dark Earth LARP in september, and it takes time.
I've added some details on the bastion, but I need to make two more doors. About the casting project, I'm getting in contact with a man who could teach me all I need to now about casting.
I have also started to paint the shrine yesterday.
Tomorrow will be a very cool day. I'll have a 40k Game with Vim_the_good (Check his galeries, it's really worth it!) and I'll play my Thousand sons for the second time, along with a small detachment of Tzeentch Daemons. Wish me luck!
It's been a busy month for me, with two 40K games (which I've lost) and many new things including some improvements for my CSM army for the next games.
Let's start with a transport for my TS termies:
I've also worked on my obliterators. These are second hand models which came whithout the weapons on the arms, so I have to add some myself (still a lot to do on this point). As the obliterators head are probably one of the worst mistake GW made, I've used some GS replicas of the hellbrute head which is far better (I posted a test conversion of the head last year).
Here's what they're looking like:
The fix on the obliterators is very clever. Not that I would EVER advocate press moulding your da are really beautiful. Where are the exhausts on the raider from BTW?
@Graven: We both know press moulding is the first step to drug dealing
I'm trying to paint deDV models the best I can. As I already said it, I'm not a really good painter, but I'm trying to improve my skills. The DA are a test for the day I will start to repaint my old DA army (with which I started to play 40k in 96), and the cultist should be a good exercise for my necromunda models.
Thanks for the idea! I can use some blades on the front doors in a metal jaw style!
I've finally worked on the same extra armor as on my rhinos. No rivets yet, but it's the next step!
I've also started some kind of gunner sorcerer with a spellbook from the WoC war altar:
I've nearly finished the obilterators' arms
And just for the fun of it, I bought myself a Nurgle blood bowl team
4 Nurgle rottens, 4 pestigors and 4 common gors.
Since it's now impossible to play commo gors in a nurgle team, Ibougt some Avatars of War not-Nurgle warriors:
@Graven: I've made some tests with the blades to build some jaws, but I ended up with something terrible... However, I've used some skaven bits and here it is:
I've finished the gunner (count as combi melta)
and I've added the last final thing that makes me say the conversion job is finished: Rivets!
The land raider is now undercoated and waiting for a first layer of Regal Blue.
@GiraffeX: ...I hate you sir... ... Well, obviously, it's violently thrust into the ground and acts as a six blades plough!
More seriously, you're right on this point, but I didn't know how else I could represent the vehicule option that improves the tank ramming attack on footsoldiers.
Thats not going to be an easy one to model on a LR. I like the first option, ram it into the ground / enemy. The transported troops could be told to use the side doors only
inmygravenimage wrote:Small hinge -even just a bit of rod either side- to show that it goes flat as the hatch opens would work if you're being obsessive about such things
Brilliant!
inmygravenimage wrote:So what's going over the "empty" doors then?
Twin linked lascannons with riveted housings. I've added some dragon headed gargoyles ont the canons.
GiraffeX wrote:Thats not going to be an easy one to model on a LR. I like the first option, ram it into the ground / enemy. The transported troops could be told to use the side doors only
Or they could be told to crawl through the half opened hatch and fall on the ground with the typical elegance of a termie armor bearer (I guess it's valid fom some kind of strategic point of view...or not)

a good place to hide a c'tan?
just kidding seriously though maybe move the spikes up a little have them all on one pinned rack that can flatten out when the door is open
