Cheers Metsuri, I am going to try out something different with it today. I have a lightbox set up but I still get the same issue with it, that despite the cameras settings and the lighting being static, the images vary massively. I think that I might be using too high an f number for it, so going to test that too

Sometimes I cant figure out why my camera wont focus correctly - I try everything and nothing works but then I try it again a bit later and it does! confusion. But the minis are looking great especially the colourful lizards. Any chance of an army shot before they are posted off?

Oh hell yeah, will have full shots of that army on a playing board deffo. Might actually get a photographer friend to do it for me though. This is the first army I will ever have painted in full and I don't want my crappy photo skills to ruin the documentation!

I think that would look pretty cool too, HF Izanagi. Loving the KH1 cloud conversion btw.
The slaans thrones rock is now finished, blue grey. Started on blacklining the gold areas to make sure there is a little contrast. The gold will be going on tonight and the karskin sarge will be based and primed. Will get some WIP shots of the throne as I go, camera was sadly out of battery last night.

what GW colours do you use in your browns and bones?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
Ireland Just having a vicious cold streak here. Everywhere but Cork is under a couple of foot of snow for the last week but the sea seems to be keeping it at bay.
The blacklining is a black undercoat under all the gold areas, and where the gold areas will end on larger parts like the golden bases of the bone spires. The liquid metal is crazy hard to work with so leaving a bit of black showing underneath gives room to tidy it up if needed too, as any spill overs can just be blackened again.
Bone on the lizardmen is Menoth, 2 washes sienna unwatered, and then rehighlight of bleached bone/menoth. Bone gloves for the sniper are white primer with 2 coats devlin and bleached bone/skull white highlight.
Pretty much all my other bones are graveyard earth blended up to either bleached bone or all the way through to white and given a sienna wash.
The browns vary wildly, which in particular were you referring to?

One of the best points I find in the work I've seen you do, is the Eyes, I'm terrible at them and to see so much detail on possibly the smallest part of the model is incredible.
Have you ever thought about rice inking? (writing words on the head of a grain of rice) because I think you'd have the nack but seriously great work!

It's Vallejo liquid gold The silver is excellent too but my god is it bright. Will work very well as a highlight though control with these is very difficult due to their water like consistency.

I always saw eyes as very important on models, they are something we subconciously look to first so I try to make sure they look ok even on tabletop standard troops. The skinks are easy as pie as their eyes are absolutely massive and gently domed. The Slann is going to be much harder, especially as I want to blend them down a bit. The Steel legion I wimped out on entirely. Their eyes are really tiny and you have the added horror of the mask below and the helmet above, meaning they are in a huge recess, it just was not worth the extreme hassle to get them done for those dudes, though if they were character standard or higher I would have tried as best I could.
Rice decorating, haha no I would not be suitable I would just end up writing tiny swears on them then bottling them and selling them to tourists.

You can add money to a paypal account directly from your bank account, but it takes 1-2 weeks for all the security checks and stuff to get done.

Post by: Heffling
Great looking stuff as always, Ifalna. Did you ever get a chance to see if the liquid gold paints rust when mixed with water?
Also, more futurama please!
11961
Post by: Ifalna
I think it would be possible through paypal with either a bank transfer or maybe a prepaid for top up credit card, but I am not sure!
I have mixed some gold with regular water and the only result was it failing to stick to the model, sorry :( Seems it won't be an easy way to weather without powders/stippling.
Slann is coming along great, his skin and ears/eyes are done, he still needs all his nubbins like teeth, jewelery etc to be finished and then a final tidy up, but you can see the basic idea of him now.
Palanquin is in the very final stages, just some final highlights and touchups to be done. Little skink attendant is also in the nubbin stage.
Really loving painting this dude, I tried a new technique for his skin to try and make it look as natural as I could, but the model itself is rather lumpy and pitted, especially in the recesses. Very tempted to gloss varnish him, frogs and toads are rarely matt.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Coming along beautifully Iffy, think your gloss varnish idea has merit.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Gloss would give him a nice slimy look. Good for frogs, bad for toads. Guess it depends on weather you want him to look dry or slimy.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
You can dilute gloss varnish a bit to tone it down, I've done this on occasion with reasonably good results.
22039
Post by: Rose_Mountainz
You could add some dots to his back, toads usually got that I think, maybe in a darker version of his skin?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
Can't really do much with the back as you cannot see it at all once the model is assembled, but I was thinking of bringing all his warts up the same way as his ear spots for some extra blue to break up the red. Think that would work out?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah, but then you lose the uniqueness of the tympanum... how about bringing them up to the yellow/gold of the underbelly?

30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Looking great Iffy, I'd go with Gits' idea of diluted gloss, or possibly satin for the finish. Warts would look better worked up to yellow or down to brown, think you want to keep the blue fairly unique, again as Gits suggests

Post by: Metsuri
The Slann looks great and will stand up nicely from the rest of the army with the red paint job. Nice contrast between him and the natural looking palanquin. The bone parts look really nice.

Post by: sonofruss
The green vines are very muted and not really visible behind the Slann they need a hit of highlight to bring them away from the grey of the stone like the leaves.
11961
Post by: Ifalna
Vines are all actually dark brown with green leaves, the bad lighting is hiding them. My own fault really, I can't justify setting up the lightbox for WIP pics, specially with 2 cats who seem to be under the impression its a new toy for them to get into!
Slaan + Sarge updates. Both nearly finished now, Slann needs teeth finished and gold silver tipped, sarge needs his camo and all wiring etc finished + some washes, just waiting on some feedback from the owner before I continue.

Tallarn flesh base, then a heavy flesh wash. Next highlight was pure tallarn flesh leaving only the areas I wanted darker uncovered, then a few more highlights or varying mixes of Bleached bone/tallarn painting on the different shades.
Eyes were painted last which is something Ive never done before, and the hair is a base of chaos black and tallarn flesh, with a highlight of the same mix with extra tallarn.

I though I had already commented on this but it seems I must pressed the wrong button - I like that man - his sword is my favourite bit - although I agree that his face is wel painted too.
Sword blending awsome -
11961
Post by: Ifalna
The sword was cheeky, I got this stuff from vallejo called metal medium. I had no idea what it was, I just had a slot to fill on my 11 bottle order and it sounded cool so I got it.
What it turned out to be was a bottle of metal paint, same consistency as GW paint. It looks like white when you paint it on but it is actually metallic. You can add any colour to this and it turns it that colour metallic, so his sword is just that with chaos black being blended down. So cheeky!
Also, it finally snowed. We got about 2 inches, but this morning it was nothing but packed down ice so walking 3 milles to work was really scary. Hopefully me more tonight so it won't pack down as much.

This is looking very tasty indeed. On an unrelated note, I'm planning on trying a bit of dettol stripping, as advocated by you in the past: any advice?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
I found with the dettol that the number one rule is to not add water anywhere near the model till you have removed nearly all the paint.
Soak it in a sealed container untill the paint "expands" off the model slightly, then just take it out, hold it over the sink, and start scrubbing with an old toothbrush. The paint mostly slides off, but if you were to add water it would get really sticky and nasty. Once it is nearly all off, you can then rinse everything off the model in one go Worked a charm for me!
Thanks for the great feedback so far everyone. I am starting my 3 day weekend tonight at 11, and also going onto nightshift for Christmas untill Feb >< Means a lot of time for painting though, so looking forward to it

I like the vibrant colors on the Slann, he will really stand out on the battlefield. The Vallejo medium sounds interesting; have you tried adding anything other than black paint to it? Adding green might make a pretty nice effect if you eve need to do a poisoned blade.

All done with the Sarge This was a lot of fun to do and it felt great to try and paint it from an image, though I did alter the piping to be dark green as I am a rebel.
Made this little urban base for the Emperors champ, but want to see if the owner likes it before its finished off.
Finally, the slaan is done too but it turns out the palanquins bottom slot is completely wrong and goes into the model at a massive angle, so If you mount it the palanquin looks like its swerving off.. I dont think Im going to be able to drill out a new slot for it so Ill see if the owner might be able to sort it himself as I assembled the rest of it anyway Tomorow and the rest of tonight is the slaans base, some salamanders, and starting the emps champ at character standard.

Disaster just struck. I went to start on the salamanders and it turns out all 4 are the bodies with missing front left legs, but all the legs that came are back right legs, so theres no way to actually stick them on or paint them without them being legless. Typical! haha. Contacted the owner, might just leave them out and finish the last few templeguard for the army instead.
Edit: Oh wait, no, they are just stupid looking legs. Phew

Post by: wolfshadow
WHat exactly is that base... I think its cork, but how did you do itÉ
11961
Post by: Ifalna
It's cork tiling broke into small pieces by hand, then glued on top of other pieces to make an organic rock effect. More than 2 layers of it can be added to look the most like rock, but I left it at 2 to leave the surface flat. You can also glue on some sand to the lower areas to make it look a little more realistic.
After the glue has dried, you just prime and paint it as you would anything else It's extremely light and can also be drilled into for pinning which I have done with this guy.

Tomorrow is 4 Salamanders to the same scheme as the Slann. Busy busy! Really happy I've finally sorted out my lighting and camera to not absolutely murder my colours, the Slann at last looks as vivid as he does in real life. Very happy.
Oh yes, and I found this old dude in an old army case. I think he was from my first year of painting. I seem to have been a hella lot more colourful back then, but messier Chaos sorcerer I think?

Post by: Metsuri
The Slann look very good, the pics are a bit messed by the compression though. I would love to see some individual pics instead of the collage.
The emperors champ look like he could use another set of extreme highlights, but it might be caused by the background. Good, clean and natural paint job on him too.
11961
Post by: Ifalna
His highlights were a bit muted out by having to lighten the image slightly to not obscure detail, the final highlights are un mixed shadow grey So quite strong blue.
Sorry for the lack of updates, I am indeed working away, night shift is just slowly killing me :( I had two days weekend I just came off but I don't even really remember them, I had to catch up on so much sleep! Salamanders are done, just basing them at the moment and finishing off the bases on a previous skink unit. Haha, by now those figures that come with the "force power" lightning thingies may cost a fortune due to collectors. The ones I used I bummed off of my nephews. LIKE A BOSS. Nah, actually they were the ones who offered them to me. At first I wasn't so sure about it cause they looked a bit cheesy, but now seeing the model painted up and the lightning primed, it's pretty badass. And that's not even one of the better looking ones! I love the way it's turning out!

Aye they actually look pretty good I was worried the primer could cause issues with them but it just softened the plastic slightly and covered well. Going to do this dudes gems on his coat and star on another tonight.
This particular one did not have many details, the others have nice coats and facial markings, so they will be great fun

The Eldar are looking great, love the darker look. Very smooth painting.
The banner was made by bending / cutting the etched brass into position, trying to force it to wrap around the different ridges.
Then super glued into position and painted. (Paint = Chaos Black deliberately making fine slash type effect around etched brass leaving a white circle around the brass. Red Gore on symbol, Badab Black wash over everything. Codex Grey drybrush over Chaos Black section and Blood Red drybrush over Red Gore section).

3 more just about finished bar the metals, needed to take a break so figured it was a good pic taking time.
I rethought some of the colour scheme and felt that the "bone" would be better if I warmed it up in colour a bit and not dull down the turqoise, and I think it does look better now. I went crazy with the gems and they are all different variations of turquoise and blue instead of all being identical
I've learned 2 things about these today.
1: They are Eldar, not Tau as I have spent the last 3 days calling them.
2: They have amazingly lopsided faces, which I hope is down to a dodgy mold but not likely as the rest of the heads are symmetrical.
I spent a bit too long for tabletop quality on the one with robes as I was trying out different bone colours and turquoise blends but hes a bloody lovely model.

I have no idea how this one is still going. Its been there years, it has detailed tiling all around it of the leaves of a specific perfectly legal flora and no one has said anything. It's quite funny when you think about it A lovely little shop too if you do actually just want to grow fruit and veg and dinner herbs.
These dudes are in amazingly good shape considering they came overseas Damage Ive found so far is one broken arm and a couple of snapped off lightning effects of a different kind fo the ones these have. Nothing terrible at all.

His floaty machines white section is actually pretty nobbly, I need to fix that up when I get home from work. Amazing how photographs show all the problems with a mini that you can't see by just checking in hand :S
Bone splat on his robe too Hnnrgh. The greeny turquoise with black and bone is a scheme I saw on some Tyranids a long time ago and remembered, its turned out quite nice and very very quick to do considering the main colour is just primer Really looking forward to getting their metals finished and doing the other 5 in the unit, though Im still wondering what do to about their power effects. Any colour I choose now could turn out to clash or not be noticeable when the rest of the army is done, so as much as I want to get it done, I have to be patient for now.
Lizardmens bases are all finished and they are all packed away One salamander had a small cat related incident and lost his head, but that's sorted now. 10 Saurus to go and all done. I've had them so long now, but they are lowest priority so I've been lucky to get so many done in between commissions I figure.

What type of black paints do you use on the Eldars Ilfana?
it has a nice gritty feel to it, it seems?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
Highlights are slightly thinned hawk turquoise followed by either a direct edge/highpoint highlight of near 1:1 Hawk turquoise and white. I'm using vallejo glossy white as it gives a more solid feel to anything I use to mix it with. Its a really strong colour that looks near neon over black, so I found using it sparingly and not across the entireity of the original turquoise kept it under control.
When I'm using it on the character standard figures I would have a second 2:1 hawk to white highlight in between the final and original to help fade it in better.
The black is good old GW black primer thats been layered with a slightly thinned mix of chaos black and a tiny speck of midnight blue.

Airbrush + compressor found and on their way in the mail, sorted out some ebay auctions and updated+altered my site 3 more farseers near completed, taking a break to eat something to get rid of hand shakeys. Will update pics of them as soon as they are all done.
Also got a new camera set up and a way nicer image editor then I previously had, no more loss of colour or sharpness/warmth while changing image size etc Super simple Orc I did up recently to practice a cartoony style -

I was wondering if it would be okay to PM you with an Eldar colour scheme and possibly get a quick explanation/walkthrough (ie, step 1, step 2,...) of how you'd do it in your table top quality? Its perfectly alright if you'd rather not and/or don't have time.

Gits, cheers. They aren't on par with amazing lime green tanks with yellow and red decals being driven by super space men in Mantis armour, but thats the level of awesome I am hoping to aim for ;D
My Compressor arrived yesterday and is currently at my feet at my work desk. It is a lot bigger than I assumed it would be. In a shockingly random twist however, Aldi's special deal this month is.. a 150 psi air compressor for €30. Amazing timing Aldi, cheers. The one I bought is much higher quality but I am going to get an Aldi one anyway as a backup, can't go wrong for that price with a 3 year warrenty

Sorry I haven't commented in so long; I have pretty much burned the candle at both ends, and after they blocked Dakka at work my non-painting-semi-free-time went away!
I really like the turquoise and bone scheme you have there. Some of the robe highlights seem a bit too hard to my eye though; the farseer looks like she has spikes down there instead of a skirt. You have a hard limit on the blending you can do though, so it is understandable. Probably why I should never really paint for other people
As to the pig, I gotta say I LOVE the pink on his snout and ears. If I look too long, all I see are mold lines ( ) but that pink snout is just great, and pleases me out of all proportion.

Post by: Ifalna
Guilty as charged, Wehrkind. If I am doing something for display or sale I make sure they are cleaned up. I got lazy with the piggy as he was just for fun, he just ended up looking nice Haha.
Lizardmen army are off to their owner tomorrow, will get shots of them on a table before I say goodbye. Today I tried out my airbrush for the first time, and all I can say is holy feth.
Extremely technical, getting the paint thinned correctly was so confusing, and I tried multiple thinners ( glass cleaner) till I was eventually happy, only to have the flow stop. Spent about 30 minutes cleaning the needle and interior as I had read about before realising I had turned off the compressor so it was not auto refilling ¬_¬ Trial and error continued and I got these done to tabletop in 5 hours total, which is freaking awesome time for me.
The eyes are ruined, something I have learned from. I should have done them before doing the helms and masks but I for some stupid reason left them for last, so they are very basic as I risked ruining the helms paintjobs :( Happy with the rest though, especially as I managed to get an ok result with the first time airbrush considering everything that could have gone wrong. Going to do gradients next, I like the idea of multi colour fades on the harliquins
My hands are completely blue now. Need to get some gloves till I get better airbrush control.

These arrived in perfect nick so the owner must have done a very good job! Only one is missing a wing and he is currently sitting on my workbench looking sorry for himself. I'm going to try and pin it in place as the original bond is broken now.
Bigges problem I had with these was their inability to stand. Look Eldar, I get you are graceful and light on your feet, but standing on pointe on one foot ALL THE FREAKING TIME means you have balance issues as a metal model. They kept trying to fling themselves off the table.

Nice job with the aribrush Iffy. I had a lot of clogging issues at first too, but in very short order you'll figure it out. Unfortunately I can't explain why or how... but you will. It did Weety, posted on Fb too He loves it, I will get some shots of him chugging coffee from it.
I used to stick 2p coins under models back in the day, that helped out a lot with ones that had terrible balance.
Fire dragos done, 5 hours for this unit, still crazy fast for me. Attempt 2 with airbrush. Tried out shading and colour fading. I feel these are way better than the first attempt but that might be just personal preference. I got the eyes done properly and did some more Tron-esque edge highlighting! What I learned from this group was that I need more of a colour clash when airbrushing armor. The swooping hawks had no real distinction as the highlight and base colour I used were far too similar and I did not wash between coats. With these I chose 3 varying tones of red and it turned out much nicer, but next time will definitely call for washing between coats and not afterwards as I don't like the effect it gave.

These are 0.5, I have a 0.3 but want to get used to the medium one first. I don't want to have to rely on the tiny needle for mass painting tabletop standard which I know will happen if I start working with it too early.
Dee and Jin, thanks kindly! I want to get transitions down as soon as possible so I am starting to practice with them straight away. It was great to get a solid red like that, working it with a brush would be so time consuming.. this kind of feels a bit like cheating :(

Post by: Ifalna
I was going to go with a dark grit base for them, but when I started working on the swooping hawks some were already painted and the bases were green flock. I assumed that meant that the rest of the painted models of this army had green flock bases too, so went ahead with it so they would all match up in the end when they get home Would be super easy to change though, so I will give Coldfire a poke and see what he wants.
Tonight was a disaster :( Started on the rangers, they were looking nice and I was happily working on them untill their badab wash dried.. white. The pot seemed fine, it had been shaken, it was near empty but even then I can't see why this happened. I binned the pot, but the rangers so far are ruined as they have lovely black fade grey cloaks with freaking chalky white recesses, so I have to repaint most of them. Angry!

Interesting as this has happened to me too on more than one occasion, and I mix up my own washes useing vallejo glaze meduim. I have always wondered why it happens sometimes and not other times. Thought it was maybe getting the mix wrong or drying time fluctuations.

Yeah I'm dreading posting the scouts now as they are so bland comparatively They are meant to be dark and sneaky but the fire dragons make them look so freaking simple.. I will try to jazz them up with some red gems and lenses which might help them out. Then again I can't make them too bright, oh the complexities!
@ Wazzdig Dagga - I don't understand why it happened either. No moisture changes, they weren't coated in anything odd, it was applied as normal, it just dried terribly :( Overnight has made no changes to it either.
@ Xenon - turns out the ones with flock bases were not actually the owners, hah! So no problem, will be re-basing everyone with a dark grit like on the karskin sarge in my gallery. The grey should help pop the highlights and colouring.
@ monkeytroll - They could just be a fluke, I am so new with the airbrush that replicating them might turn out to be hilarious, but I need to anyway as there is a second unit to go! Was thinking of actually trying to block off the heads on the second unit and giving them yellow helms with the same kind of fade. Will be an experiment to say the least..
The airbrush I got was http://cgi.ebay.ie/PRECISION-GRAVITY-FEED-AIRBRUSH-KIT-AB-183K-/380301070071?pt=UK_Crafts_DrawingSupplies_EH&hash=item588bb5cef7 which has so far had no problems at all. Today I am going to go get some methylated spirits to help clean it though, I had heard windex/windowlene was a good cleaning agent for them but it is not shifting the paint on mine at all. I got some surgical non powdered latex gloves in a pharmacy too, and some WD-40 would not go amiss when it comes to helping the dual action trigger stay smooth. I will post a super simple tutorial for it when I am sure I am practised with it enough that I can replicate results. Posting one now would just be pictures of me wearing dodgy gloves completely covered in red and blue while trying to fiddle with a super complicated piece of machinery I am still learning about.
Fingers crossed for having the scouts done for tonight, going out for dinner could delay them a little.

Heres a quick WIP shot of the rangers. Camera had difficulties with this amount of black and I won't be tinkering with it or more shots right now as they are WIP anyway ><
Gems and guns are done, cloaks are pretty much done though their lovely airbrush blend to grey was ruined by the crappy badab incident.. Need their skin, hair, and all baubles done and they should be good to go. Spent far too long on these already due to needing to repaint the suckers.
I had a lot of difficulty adding hardline highlights to these guns, it's not something I ever did before. After a "tad" of failure on the first couple I went with adding the lines more like reflective streaks and I think it worked out. Hopefully these wont end up too bland.

@bunnygurl - They don't cost a massive amount, ebay saved me a few pennies on one for sure. Saved up for a few weeks and don't regret getting one at all, the time it saves painting up units is insane.
@Lt. Coldfire- I know right? Some kind of mega genius.
@weetyskemian44 - the gems rescued them, before they were added the figures were just crazy bland, the lilac and black is not enough to make a figure look eye catching without some extreme edge highlights to say the least. Thrilled that they have a bit of colour now.
Cheers for the compliments, I'm not sure how I am going to paint the hair and doodad's though, silver for sure, but hair colour and sashes are still up in the air. Any suggestions?

They look quite good Iffy. Zooming on on the photo really helps as you can see the little bright bits on the models. Shadow effect is very convincing. Do you mind giving us a quick description of how you did it? My son's got a necron night bringer that we've been struggling with and I think this might set the mood perfectly with him.
The bases will brighten them up quite a bit (if you do the same as on the others).
11961
Post by: Ifalna
When they are done I will upload some much larger shots with better lighting I tend to be super fast with WIP shots as I get them done just before bedtime.
The shadowing on these was a chaos black base with gradually lightened airbrush highlights from above, and blending up from the bottom. Afterwards was a badab wash in the recesses which managed to wreck all the work beforehand, then a careful edge highlight with the same final colour as the airbrush highlights. It is really not this noticeble right now due to photo quality, but hopefully you will be able to see it better when I take their real shots.

Been thinking how to do the next unit of fire dragons. Need to make them very similar but also different enough to be able to work out which unit is which.
Was thinking of bringing up their edge colour to an orangey yellow, so instead of the pure red feet hands and helmet edges, there would be a hint of yellow too? Not sure if that would really be enough, but I could also go with green or yellow gems too for some variation.
Any suggestions?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I like that idea... they'd be similar yet distinct and the battlefield.
What was your base on the dragons? Black? Or did you start with a dark red and move up from there?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
They were based chaos black primer, then I started off the colour itself with a dark blend of black and blood red. I could have mixed scab but I always found that if I darken down the colour I will be finishing with and blend upwards, it blends slightly better? Hard to explain, but other reds don't seem to be the same mix as blood red, so if I based with them it would not look right even though they are darker.
I then did a light spray of a blood red heavier mix, then blended in pure blood red thinned heavily. I think with the next ones I could do another layer over this of a very thinned yellow being built up just to the crest edges.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
So.... is the original primer black still visible, or does it get completely covered up by the black/blood red mix? I agree with your comment on the red shades... especially with the air brush switching shades can cause problems in continuity when blending.
I've never been in the habit of blending up from black (airbrush or not) even though I know it can produce some really striking results... but those dragons (and the scouts) are so dramatic I'm trying to suss out exactly how you did it to see if I need to reassess my position on the whole subject.
17916
Post by: Miss Dee
How about a differant coloured helm?
11961
Post by: Ifalna
The black would be completely covered by the dark red, it was just there as a primer and to keep the mini dark as wanted.
The dark red however was VERY dark. Blood clot dark. Nasty but rich and recognisable as a red tint. From what I learned with these the airbrush appreciates a very dark base layer. It ended up nearly completely covered with the lighter blood red mix, but you could still see it in the recesses and mid body. If it had been the black primer in the recesses, it would have looked much starker and not as nice and warm? It's what the hawks missed out on. Had their orginal colour coat been a much much darker turquoise, think of the contrast the light coat would have had, I made the mistake of making the first colour coat way way too light on them :(
Thats a good plan Dee, I could try masking off the heads and having them a full yellow fade, it could look really nice but I am a bit nervous about how I could mask them off properly with such tiny necks.. would doing the heads first then carefully covering them in blu-tac when dry work? That could be very doable, I wont be able to get the right coverage with masking tape I dont think.

Airbrushes are amazing if you have a good one. They can do sooooo much of the work for you and make it look like you spent hours when in fact it is more minutes. Cheers btw I think those fire dragons are some of your best work yet.

Thanks Empchild, that means a ton from someone at your level, honestly
The airbrush does feel a little bit like cheating in a way, but I think I can learn to live with it heheh. Dee, that could well work, I will test it out this weekend when I have time to paint, work keeps me super busy to my regret.
Hit a big milestone today as I made my first over €100 model sale. My old HE dragon I was so proud of last year is off to its new ebay owner. As much as I liked the model I don't see the point in having older models that don't have a sentimental value taking up space at home when I could try selling them instead, so that's something I will be taking to heart if and when I get more time to paint, which hopefully will be soon >< Painting up practice models and then getting a bit of cash selling them in between commission work definitely seems to be the way to go.

One of the fastest ways of making a unit look different is to change their weapons. In this case, perhaps a wraithbone-style of fire pike, where you shade up from brown to bleached bone to white?

He was happy so I am thrilled Also nice to clear up all that shelf space!
Scouts are finished now, were actually done yesterday but I had to wait for the base pva to glue before finishing them off -
Still a bit annoyed that their nice faded cloaks got ruined by the rogue badab black, but they turned out ok in the end I think. Tabletop standard, around 7 hours due to having to repaint :( In process now are some fantastically purple warp spiders, hoping to finish them off by tonight. Also going to try a test model for some marines that just came in.
Had a friend over with the new Aracnaroc(?) giant spider from the new gobbo black box, he was assembling it while I painted and holy feth it is an amazing model. Really fantastic sculpt, fits together seamlessly.

Lizard men are awesome Iffy, really nice job. And those eldar scouts are really great; I love the muted color scheme.
As to distinguishing units, have you thought about using decals or a stencil for different squad markings? That way you keep the uniform "traditional eldar aspect look" while being able to tell the units apart easier. Alternately, you could just mark on the underside of the base which unit is which, since it isn't often that eldar units are close enough to each other to be confusing, and fire dragons usually just jump out of a transport, light up a tank, then get killed right away, so there isn't much time to get confused

Awesome, got the go ahead to continue with this green on the rest of the 1st spider unit. Took a while to work out how to get a nice powerful green like this while not going outside of tabletop standard but it should look brilliant across a whole unit. All thats done on this guy are the whites and green, purple is unhighlighted yet. I think the 3 colour schemes Coldfire chose so far are really working out for this, too many colours per model across an army with so much variation would start looking a tad insane.
Getting whites to tabletop is harsh. Going Astro- Vallejo ghostly grey (amazing coverage) - skull white thicker - skull white smoother, but hard to not get it lumpy. Can't wait to finish these dudes off, they are so uber techno. SPIDERS FROM SPACE.

Actually, I find these very inspiring, as I am still searching for the ideal colour scheme for my Eldar. What are the colours used: Main colour is Shadow Grey I assume?

Post by: Ifalna
I will get the exact names for you once I am at home Kroothawk, but if I recall the guns and armor were Necron abyss lightened with either skull white or ghost grey (need to double check) which gave the shadowy lilac colour. Robes were just Black with a lightened grey misted from above and an edge highlight of watered ghost grey.

Early night tonight so there is no way I am getting all the greens done on this unit, but I finished the glow greens on the leader.. man dude. He has clamps and sword arms. Imagine that.
Once again all that is done on him are the greens and whites, but I brought his greens up way more tron like to make him stand out a little more from the unit, same as the firedragon leaders having more turqoise and gem details and the swooping hawks leader having white to jade fade wings. This guy is so tron that it is crazy, he looks really awesome in lower light but that would look bad in the photo Crazy reflective whites on this one are courtesy of Vallejo gloss white in very watered layer. He's not this reflective in reality or I would be blind.

Cheers Gits, this is crazy fun to paint. Looking forward to doing more tonight but to not as white a finish
Coldfire, glad you like it. Would you like the same kind of extreme glow on the other units gun colours or will we stick to it just on the purple and greens?
Kroothawk, Ghost grey is a vallejo colour, I should have said that earlier sorry. It's a slightly lighter bluer version of astronomicon but manages to cover incredibly well. Using it mixed with skull white gives fantastic coverage you can then layer white over.
I did not get a chance to check the exact amounts for the pale shadowy lilac but I will try to tonight for you Work nights are mega hectic for me.

Green for cats for sure. Try a Dark angels green base over black leaving a tiny bit of black around the edges, then a medium sized circle of goblin and a smaller circle of scorpion watered down, so like a small green target. I would then do a slit line down the center of goblin again, and then a slit of black for the pupil leaving a tiny bit of goblin still showing. Add shine near the top of where the pupil starts but very slightly to the side.
Same idea as the skinks eyes except with a more vivid iris. You could blend it up too if you wanted it to a higher quality

Love the warp spiders and I have noticed the same thing as you with my Skorne, the purple is hard color to highlight. Just when I thought I have it nailed after painting some 20 figs with it, I managed to botch one. You could try to wash the pink down to purple with some glazes, that has worked for me.

I think he is one of the older models. I love solid metal figures, they are always so kooky and full of character. His weapons are so over the top it is fantastic
Metsuri, I am going to have to be really careful and make sure I have enough of the colour mix to get them all done. I don't fancy trying to have to remix the exact light purple mid unit, I know it will end up being pink and I will nerdrage :(
GiraffeX, thanks so much, that is incredibly sweet and very motivational! Get some of your models up in the gallery so we can have a look, coming back from taking a big break always leads to really fun miniatures!

Coldfire sent me pictures of the schemes he wanted on each unit, I then modified them to be reachable in my tabletop standard while giving a nice final effect.
The starkness of the green glows are due to that, I have to limit myself to layering or I would go too far over standard and cut myself short of time.
These are loosely based on some really stellar purple and green models from CMON that he sent me.
34119
Post by: neil101
Thanks for the info iffy , i bet the starkness leads to a great looking tabletop army, i find i like the simple bold colours for a unified army , not too much detail, on the other hand for smaller scale games , the sky is the limit .

Post by: Ifalna
I completely and utterly agree with what you said, neil101.
Bold and simple is fantastic for large units and armies. I like to stick to a 3 colour scheme per unit. While painting up each individual model to heavy metal standard would be amazing, the details are almost lost amongst the models in armies, if that makes sense.
Thamor, I really have not been using the airbrush very long so any advice I can give is dodgy at best Mine seems to be very simple compared to yours, I only have 3 needle sizes and only a gravity feed. If you are getting stuck, grab yourself some sprue or some old models and go to town on them. Try out colour fades, try out highlighting from above with different shades of red untill you get a result you think would look great on your Blood Angels, just sit down and have a play around with the airbrush and see what kind of effects you can get.
Highlighting from above is something I tried from all of Les's amazing tutorials. Base a test model in your scar red, then mix up a new lighter red. Go a few shades lighter then what you think the next step from the scar red should be and then thin it to your normal amount. Spray it in a very light mist ( a dual action brush does help ) at an above and slightly to the front angle to the model and it will fall in a realistic way on the armor, leaving shadowy areas shadowed and areas in full light highlighted. Do that on all sides and see what you think, I find the bigger the difference between the two shades, the more powerful the finished look.
What PSI are you powering the brush with too? That can make a huge difference in outcome.
27673
Post by: Thamor
Thanks for the tips. I did try using a lighter shade from above the model but i must be doing something wrong as it came out misty and went over uneven, making it look a little messy actually.
Im not too sure what you mean by PSI?
26697
Post by: Lt. Coldfire
Pounds per Square Inch (PSI) is the measurement used for pressure =P. The higher it's set at the faster your paint is speeding out of the airbrush. That will definitely affect the outcome, as Iffy said.

Not at all! Try it out on 30 if you can alter it. Most brushes output at between 20 and 30 when it comes to using hobby paints. To strong and the paint wont mist out properly, and too weak and the same thing happens.
Kroothawk wrote:

It was just about 2:1 necron to grey for the base coat, then I mixed by eye for each highlight, the final edge highlight was just about 1.1, so the mid tone would be inbetween. Would have to go by eye Im afraid, I do need to start noting my mix ratios when I do a new colour that needs to be used again, I always forget to do it then have a nightmare remixing it :(
The spiders are all done, neon extravaganza!
The edge highlight for the purple was hard, I did a wide highlight with warlock purple then mixed it with white to get a tone that managed to be very light, but not quite pink yet. This unit looks gorgeous on the table, the photos don't do it justice. About 6 hours total, the neon took a fair while but I enjoyed every second of it.
Also did a simple test model for a custom chapter batch of Sms+Sternguard. Sm's are to tabletop, Stern will be to character standard. Mixing up the green was very hard as it is out of production, but I got something similar with 2 vallejo. All thats done on this are the blue and green to see if the owner wants me to go ahead with the rest similarly. Mine on the left, his example on the right -

How did I not realise how awesome Multiquote was before?
Thamor, keep in touch about it. Looking forward to seeing some of the results! I ordered some proper airbrush cleaner for mine as I am having problems with paint in the needles groove not coming out when its cleaned, and cotton buds just can't reach that spot. I figure some proper Vallejo cleaner as opposed to my 50% alcohol cheap nail polish remover should be a good purchase.
Gitsplitta wrote: How did you get that clean highlight around the aqua shoulder pad?
The slight aqua right angle highlight was just a very careful sweep with the same highlight colour that was sprayed from above with the airbrush (can't see it in that shot) and the blue edge highlight was a side brush with a series 7 size 0. If you get the amount of paint in them to just the right amount, you can hold the brushes bristles so that the middle of the brush is just touching the edge of armor and get a perfect thin line. Only works for hard angles like the edge of shoulderpads though.

Awesome! Can't wait to see if it works out, are you going to pair it with another colour or just go with the black and shadowy lilac?

Yep, and some thinner medium. I think even if it was brighter and more pink, the thinner would have made it acceptable by letting some of the base colour shine through. Can't get enough of that stuff.
Next up is another unit of Warp spiders but to a more orangey colour and the 5 tabletop marines Should both be done by the end of next weekend hopefully, and then I have 10 days off work to paint paint paint. Doing a airbrush based speedpaint on an old chaos spawn in my breaks at the moment to get him up for ebay. Doing great selling off the older models so far, dragon, Orc on boar, Gobbo speed paint, and Slaanesh lord are all gone and I have a few euro in the bank to spend on more painting supplies! Plans are to have shadowy lilac the main colour, black the secondary and red plus some metal (gold?) as tertiary colour, for all including aspects and vehicles. But as said, I have to test it and need a lot of time to find the painting scheme I like. The fleshy spawn looks really good. Does it have a face...?

He has a face but its gone all shades of horrible That little pink nub at the very top of the body is an ear, next to that is an eye, and the giant tube the maw comes out of appears to be his stretched out mouth. Poor dude.
Cain, it was great fun, lovely mix of an airbrushed red to brown gradient then slopping a mix of black ink and gloss over it so it ran into the recesses. Was really quick and super fun. I have more pics of it at different angles that show more of the goreyness so I might try to get some up tomorow. Was going to do blood streaks on the flesh under the tears but it would have taken too much longer for it to fit inside the exercise time.

Fine lines are something I was afraid to touch as I had bad experiences with them before, but I made myself work with them untill I felt more comfortable. I had to, or else if someone had requested them on a miniature I would have been practicing on someone elses model and giving bad results, so practicing brush control was one of the first things I did when I got the series 7 brushes
These are all done now : Tabletop standard (level 1) around 2.5 hours each:

They really do make a nice difference, and a 00 series 7 makes them a lot easier then I alway worry they will be Feels a little like cheating.
tallmantim wrote:

Hey there. The little clumps are nice and easy, dot a speck of superglue onto the finished base and add the grass. Let it dry, then add a tiny dot of more glue on top of the tuft and dip it again. 2 layers is enough for a nice thick looking little clump of grass. I prefer it over a single layer as the grass then never seems to look thick enough.
Some_Call_Me_Tim? wrote:That Chaos Spawn looks great! WHfB does not get much love around here, so it is nice to see that people are still painting the figures.

Fully agree. I enjoy painting fantasy way more than 40k in general, the colour options and lack of everything just being full on armor make them far more fun for me to paint
Next unit of warp spiders are near done. Dark red to bright orange with yellow helms and accessories and neon blue guns, they are loltastic. Also finished the below Dark Angel character, 1 of 3 thats also part of the Eldar commission. He was meant to be to tabletop standard but I got carried away abit so hes nearer character level now, but he was a blast to paint. I botched the photo a little by using a pink background to make it easier to remove in Gimp, only to then make all his golds reflect pink, haha Ill get a shot of the 3 characters together when all done anyway, so Ill get a non pink tinted pic. Weathering on hem was entirely on purpose and in no way a stray splash caused by a dirty airbrush I decided looked cool enough to leave on.
About 3 hours.

Azareal looks good, but Im confused by the banner pole. Is that something thats supposed to be there, or did it break off in transit, or ?

I can see you used LBursley's tutorial on the power sword. =-)
It looks great overall, although the vents on the backpack seem off to me. And I think DA have red guns with black and metal trim.
The contrast on the fold lines on the front of the robe seems too sharp. But it's also really hard to blend folds like that.
Note I'm not complaining, I dig the mini, just trying to help improve. I'm hardly a master painter myself.

Can't wait to try out my own airbrush this month! I really like the effect you got on the blade of the Azrael model!

Ehh, I bought my dark angels stuff off of some guy on BT. The Azrael apparently didn't arrive with the banner. I guess the previous owner used it for something else or lost it. I honestly never even noticed the model was suppose to have a banner until you mentioned.
I wondered why my Ezekiel model, of whom actually has a banner, looked so much more inspiring... hmmm. Mystery solved. Ifalna does have the helmet slave of Az to paint though, so don't worry too much!

I would pop the pack off and replace it. The newer models have molded banners like Zeak.

Cheers Gits! Hope everyone had a really good day today
New full unit of warp spiders finished, hot orange and turqoise blue. These guys took so long as they had to be repainted at one point as the colours just looked woeful, but the final version is eye catching and neon, which I love. The leader guy has some absolutely horrific mold line issues going on, it's not so much a mold line as half of his body is higher than the other half, he was a bit of a lost cause, hopefully the paintjob pulls the eye away from his intense derpyness -
Tabletop ( standard 1) about 6 hours for the unit ( not including the repaint >< )
Haha, derp
Dark angels tiny Jawa sidekick is also done, also to tabletop. Coldfire decided on gold instead of the original giant red wings, which I completely agree with him on as I have no idea why anyone would say yes to that scheme D: I am going to snip off the nob on the backpack and paint the bottom of the gun different to the top half.
Shouuuld have another update tomorow Keep tuned.

Cheers Iffy! They look fantastic, especially those warp spiders up close... wow! Great job on the sword... going to try to convince myself to give that technique a try next time 'round.

Cead mile failte, Iffy! Love the aging on the gold of the helm, and the transition on the blade. Great stuff as always.

There both looking very nice Iffy.
On the Dark Angels did you bring the robes up from a black undercoat to white?

Holy crapola, 50k views? Never would have thought I could reach that many, in amazement!
@inmygravenimage: Thanks man, I loved the helm, it was a joy to paint. Great detailing and no model issues.
@GiraffeX: The robes were brought up from DAgreen on the marine, and black on the Jawa. A dheneb stone coat makes it very easy to bring up to white. I would usually make it far more blended but these being tabletop they needed to have some decent shading without taking a million layers so are quiet stark!
Here is todays update, the start of the 5 character standard (Tier2) Sternguard. This is the image I have sent the owner to see if he is happy with the golds, I included the tier1 marine to show the quality differences a bit better. Shoulderguard was hand blended up 4 or 5 shades to give a slight glow effect and the golds move from tinny tin all the way to mithril, lovely and rich and ancient.
Lenses need finishing then next up is the blue lining which will be a lot more complex then his little friend here. These are lovely models, I think there are resin pieces added on, really make them look different.
Coldfire, please let me know what you would like painted up next, I can't decide!

He will be fully finished in tomorows update, along with maybe, maaaayybe, a gobbo for a certain git.
Todays finished unit are these Dark Reapers, tabletop standard, about 6 hours from start to finish including a sanity break
This isint, at all, what they were actually meant to look like, I just got really carried away as I was painting the intended scheme and realised the bone was looking great and the red was striking and blah blah blah, leaving me with models looking not remotely as I intended, so there is honestly a good chance these will be repainted if the owner prefers the browner scheme. Sorry Coldfire.
I feel like I am really getting to gribs with a lot of colours and techniques I have never used before with these eldar, I was so afraid about hard lining before these but as time goes on it feels like I am now getting tabletop standard results nice and quickly and without the constant fear of ruining the models, which is awesome I think the pinnacle of that so far has been the 5 marines, but I may have just put my foot in my mouth as I am finishing the higher standard one tomorow.. will have to wait and see.

They look beautiful Iffy. No offense to Cold Fire if he prefers another scheme... but the black, bone and red really exemplify the historic Dark Reaper color scheme and your execution is extremely good.

Oh my god, so many replies, I'll get to them all at the bottom!
I finished the Character standard (tier2) Sternguard. Overall I am happy with him, but I ran into some problems I didint expect at all.
Firstly, as I started on the main mini I asked myself how I was actually going to make him look higher standard and I drew a blank. He is mostly black, the mini is a basic infantry model with barely any detailing, and blurred detailing where it is done, the only colour bar his metals and shoulders were the edge highlights and could I really make them look a whole tier better?
I got to work anyway and just focused on him one part at a time. The helm was really difficult, one of the eyes is slightly miscast and the vent on top does not actually open like on the other normal marines, so I do need to repaint on a black square to make it look like it has an opening. His armor edge highlights have about 4 layers more than the tier 1 ones, but it's very subtle what with the base colour being black, and I am worried it is not that noticeable.
What I tried to really bring out the detailing with was the neatness, fineness of the lines for the edges, and detaling on his nicknacks like pouches, grenades etc, but some casting issues made that really hard. I hope he does look like he is higher quality than the norm, I think he does, but that could very well be the exhaustion talking. His gun is just metal for the moment as I was not sure where the owner would like it blue, so I am just waiting on feedback for that and if he wants anything else changed Hopefully he likes it in which case the other 4 will be painted to this scheme, but hopefully minus the helm issues and with some more options for detail.
So in a nutshell, unhappy with the helm, happy with the rest. Click for big
WillFrost wrote:I like the theme to, the bone looks better than the usual white.
There is so much white in this army already that the bone really did call out to me as I started working with it. The "intended scheme" had the bone as a deep golden brown with bone highlights, so I was going to wash it down and rehighlight but stopped and worked it back up to a lighter bone instead
Gitsplitta wrote:They look beautiful Iffy. No offense to Cold Fire if he prefers another scheme... but the black, bone and red really exemplify the historic Dark Reaper color scheme and your execution is extremely good.
Thanks a ton Gits, your imput is appreciated as always! He gave the O.K for these so they are staying as they are for now, thrilled as I really love them. The black/bone/red combo is one I am going to store away for something in the future. Can't help but think it would make some really interesting Khorne Chaos warriors/knights. Hmmm..
Bitz_Addict wrote:

Thinned paint and a lot of patience. You can cheat with certain colours though, foundation paints when mixed with normal paints and thinned still give amazing coverage, so for instance with these I did the yellow ( darksun?) foundation as the base, then mixed that into bleached bone and some thinner for each layer, so it stayed smooth, had lovely coverage, and blended well I generally use actuall thinner like the Vallejo variety instead of water, but that's mostly just because I have it on hand and have grown used to using it.
medabee wrote:....Wow, that is amazingly blended on the commander, what colors did you use to make that turquoise?
The turqoise is an OOP GW paint, something nightshade, I don't have any but I actually found a vallejo game colour that is the exact right match which is called Foul Green. It's a lovely light turqoise with a hint of yellow. The shoulderpads were basically just this mixed with black and white to various shades and layered on, starting with it and chaos black as the base, then brought up layer by layer to foul green with a touch of white. It's really subtle but the slight shading is there, which looks nice I think. I sometimes wonder if I spend way too long layering to get way too subtle an effect, it can't really be good for time efficiency

Thanks very much! If you want to see amazing colour choices though, check out Weetyskemians blog here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/315548.page she has some of the most mind blowing yet perfectly coherant schems I've ever seen in there
The skulls are indeed mega chunky, but I think it adds to their charm. The helms look almost like samurai helms to me, they are great.

Thanks a lot Tim, but you are still miles above me for the title of biggest improvement in the shortest time, I absolutely love your latest termie wip, can't wait to see him finished.
Miss Dee wrote:How did the other unit of elder aspect warriors go?
Which ones? If it was the fire dragons, that was actually two units I painted as one due to being a silly billy. Will eventually get markings on them to differentiate them.
TheChronoTrigger wrote:Like that helmet on your melta gunner there, where is that from? Also the reapers look great
The helm is a resin bit I think, so are the eagles on the backpack. It's really nice but has some problems, one of the eyes is miscast slightly and the vent at the top does not actually open at the front, but other then that I really like it too. The others all have different helms, going to look great when finished!
