After painting Horus Heresy stuff since FW started producing these georgeous models I finally wanted to share some of my finished stuff. I consider myself a solid painter - I am not playing the game so I just put weapon combinations as I like it.
I will start with the Sons of Horus and will add models from other legions soon.
1st we have Ezekyle Abaddon and some Justaerin Terminators
Another group shot of Justaerin Terminators without their 1st Captain ...
One of the Justaerin (front and back)
And concluding the first post is the Warmaster himself - easily my favorite model so far.
Hope you guys like it ... as you can see I like my Marines clean without dirt and chipping

I thought about that for a while as well. I do it like this: Black base coat, after that some serious dry-brushing is called for. I use Karak Stone first (on all stone parts of the Horus model). The normal stone parts and rubble get dry-brush highlights with Ushabti Bone. The stone parts you asked for (the eagle head) are dry-brushed with Ulthuan Grey and then highlighted with Pallid Wych Flesh. Hope that helps ...
And thanks to the other guys for your replies ... I really appreciate that.

Very helpful! Thanks so much.
I like Loken, but I feel like you should bring the color up a shade or two to differentiate him from the Justaerin more. A brighter green would make him pop more, I think.

You are right. I guess I was a little lazy there and should have added some green as the fluff requires it.

The Word Bearers got very little interest from myself, so I only painted the Primarch and his 1st Captain. Erebus is still on the to do list ... and I want to do one Gal Vorbak at least.
I like Lorgar - especially his weapon is awesome. But I do not like the base Mr. Skomorowski made for him. If I somehow come across a better one I might even rip Lorgar of this one ...

Thanks. I use the very old GW Flesh Wash for my faces (Kislev Flesh as base, then Ushabti Bone for highlights) ... that might be the reason it comes across a little yellow. It does not really look yellow to me, but I might go for another shade in the future and see if it makes a difference.

The problem with facial tattoos (especially on a Primarch) is that you really have to nail it or otherwise you ruin the whole model because the face is the focal point. I am not very good doing freehand stuff, I only do a little bit on cloaks and banners if I see fit. But I did not want to ruin a costly model such as a Primarch.

Really good. Nice take on the lightening too.
One thing bothers me though, and that is that you have chosen to contrast the blue (a cold colour) with steel, (another cold colour) while throwing in some dark green (yet another cold colour). This lends itself very well to a dark, cold look, but lacks contrast. Personally I would have chosen to have some traditional red in there too.
Beautiful painting though.

They look really nice, I actually love the blue and steel. I really like the NR models. I think maybe red could look better for the wings as suggested above but I think they look fine as is if you like it.

Rising Sun wrote:They really look epic man, I love how you painted the lightning strikes on the armour, and how you used the head upgrad kit, it really makes them stand out!
Thanks man. Some of the lightning looks more like that crystal thing from Star Trek NG, but I am still very pleased with the results. I used the "normal" NL helmets because I am not much of a fan of the bat-winged helmet ... so I reserved that for the Huntmaster.
I am still unsure what I will do with Sevatar ... helmet or bare head? Automatically Appended Next Post: Apower101 wrote:Really good. Nice take on the lightening too.

Thanks to you as well. I see your point, although I never think about cold or warm colors. Most of the time I use some red for my SM models, normally its a cloak, loin cloth or other leather materials. The NL just do not have that. I am still thinking to put some blood on the skin trophies ... that might warm them up?
80660
Post by: Apower101
Very fine line there. If you try to use gore as a method of including red, it is very easy to add too much and end up spoiling the model. A little blood would be amazing though. Personally I would either replace the green wings or white hands with a deep red, but it is entirely up to you. They are your models, and if you are happy with them, then that is what is important.

Well, I wanted to make more regular updates to this thread, but I went on a "short" hiatus because my "war room" got renovated and it took a while for me to put all my painting stuff back in place. And with Gulliman and Sigismund on the horizon I just needed to get back on track.
My newest addition is Captain Saul Tarvitz ... a kit bash I am extremely happy with. A better photo will follow (of other stuff as well), but for now this has to suffice ...

Thanks for the praise, although I think your interest in the purple is actually enhanced by the photo.
I only use Xereus Purple as the first layer on the complete model. After adding the other colors (mostly metal) I do a complete wash with Nuln Oil and after that I add a second layer of Xereus purple on the armor surfaces.
For highlighting I use Genestealer Purple and a mix of Genestealer Purple and White for the edges. So nothing special there .. I just use what is available.

Thanks again. This clean painting is just my style ... just not a fan of weathering. Still, with my DG I really tried to let it look a little dirtier overall by using the dry-brush extensively. That also helps because painting surfaces with light gray or white is not easy IMO.

As already hinted above it was dry-brushing. I coated the models with Nurgle Green, then washed them with Seraphim Sepia. After that its dry-brushing with lighter grey colors. That at least looks dirtier than my usual work with other Legions. After dry-brushing I used White Scar to accentuate some highlights ... that's mainly it.

Thanks for sharing your work.

Thanks for praise and critique. Your are right that more shadowing would be an improvement ... I do not know about different techniques to accomplish that, but I guess it involves a lot of color mixing to achieve the slight color variations. Considering how long it takes for me to paint one model already, I just do not know if I want to extend that even further.

Continuing the show with some Iron Hands ... black suits my painting style. For the IH I went with a more metallic black (compared to the deep black of the Sons of Horus).

Criticism is always appreciated. I really wish I had more time for painting, then I would like to do a Death Guard Breacher unit as well. Sadly it looks as if Garro will not receive a model - at least not as part of the DG.
However, right now FW is putting out some great character models which have priority for me (plus the awesome Ultramarines Suzerain Squad) - so no more DG as of yet.
Regarding the metallic black --- you are correct, its just drybrushing on top of black ... if it looks too metallic, I tone it down again with Nuln oil.

As someone who has read (parts of) the Horus Heresy and the Night Lords books, I jumped at this thread immediately.
A lot of fun and I think there's a visible improvement in your work from start until now, especially in bright colors.
Those Ultramarines are quite impressive.
My complaint isn't really your fault I guess, but I think the bases of Primarch minis are terrible, all across the board and wherever I've seen them.
I get it's more of an exposition model maybe, but putting the minis on a boulder doesn't help making them more intimidating or impressive to me. Anyway, that's more of a side note and doesn't take away anything from this thread. Awesome!

Thanks for the positive feedback! I am ambivalent concerning the bases for the HH chracaters. I really loved to paint some of them, e.g. Horus or Perturabo. I just hate that price of the models just rises through the roof because the bases get bigger and bigger. So here is some new stuff ... its time for the Space Wolves
First, the Primarch himself
Then we have Geigor Fell-Hand from the BoP set ... one of the best plastic models I ever worked on.
And some random legionaries ... but they are truly one of my favorites when comparing marines from the different legions

Paintwork is gorgeous and remarkably consistent across different schemes. My only question would be...isn’t that a Night Lord on Dorn’s base?
This doesn’t rule out Alpharius being involved of course!

of course you are right... that is a Night Lord and while Alpharius could indeed be anybody it was a FB comment that led me to my statement

Great paintjobs! I really like those red cloaks, they have a very satin like feel to them!
Could you please tell me, what colours you used for Leman Russ' armour? I'd like to copy the colour scheme, if you don't mind.

Thx for the praise ... I mostly paint cloaks red because I know what I am doing there ;-)
For Heresy Space Wolves Armor I use Standard Mechanicus Grey, Nuln Oil (Agrax Earthshade is possible as well), then again Standard Mechanicus Grey for surfaces, highlights using Dawnstone Grey, Administratum Grey and even Ulthuan Grey for the sharpest edges

Thank you very much for the explanation! I would never have guessed Standard Mechanicus Grey.

Super crisp painting Fireball!! Your Space Wolves and Salamanders are amazing. Also love your Imperial Fists, especially Sigismund. That head swap works perfectly

Thanks mate ... I would do more Imperial Fists but painting yellow is not getting easier for me so I am happy doing other stuff.

Base color of Stegadon Scale Green, full wash of nuln oil, clean up larger surfaces with Stegadon Scale Green again, then edge highlights with Sotek Green and Temple Guard Blue. The tips of the scales are Stormhost Silver. No drybrushing ... every dot on the scales was done individually.

Very impressive work, Word Bearers aren't my favourite in terms of lore, but their minis are excellent and more than make up for it.
Great job.
