The thing is, I can see what they were going for. They needed a drastically different interpretation of the Joker to get away from Heath Ledger comparisons.
The thing is they went to completely the other end of the spectrum compared to what it would have liked. Personally I would have preferred more of an Arkham City or Injustice vibe. Tall, very slim, lanky and creepily *fast* at close range but ultimately better dressed than Ledgers version too.
Bonus points if you sound similarish to Mark Hamill too(Troy Baker doid well in Origins).
Overall the Suicide Squad DCAO movie will probably be the better incarnation of the Suicide Squad

Nicholson's was quite close to source material of the day. Ledger's version is also really close to source material... just different source material.
Comic books evolve and change over time, and as the last time this argument came up on Dakka it was pointed out repeatedly that all 3 major portrayals of the J fit into their respective worlds/settings, and each is based off of it's era's source material.
Isn't this a little like Morrisons latest Joker? Didn't read any of it but some of the cover art was lean skin head/Calvin Klein model/ bill the butcher mashup stuff. Looks like they just added tattoos.

He seems to be the crazed maniac that Ledger wasn't. Ledger was nutz, but he was a anarchist. This guy seems less of a watch the world burn and more of start the fire that burns it.

This looks like the sort of Joker that has been through the system a few times. Which considering the Suicide Squad is made up of captured villains, would make sense. I'm willing to give it a shot.
For a one off I don't care much, but the 'Damaged' tattoo on the forehead seems a bit much.
I don't really care for the teeth but then I am not a fan of metal teeth anyway so I imagine that plays a part. Someone did point out that Batman has probably knocked his teeth/jaw around a few times so that might be why he has them done, which would make some sense.
I hope he does a good job, but that doesn't mean I can't think the forehead tattoo is a bad one.

This is assuming that Heath Ledger was a good Joker. He was pretty good at playing a character, but it's arguable if that character was the Joker, any more than Christian 'Imma hang up the cape and settle down' Bale was playing Batman.

As far as I know it isn't connected to the upcoming BvS film. The last thing WB wants is continuity of any sort between films and the like.

His act at the beginning of the movie, the nurse getup and the way he handled the mob bosses was a pretty good Joker rendition to me. So the big plan at the end was different; they tried to add their own thing onto an already well established show that he was the Joker early on. But, you know, don't let that stop you from bashing on him, V.

Let's see how the story and actor interpret the character. Let's see his chemistry with the other actors. It's really not about whether or not he's wearing a string tie and gak like that.

To belabour the point (because, really, enough people don't know about them), check out the DC Animated Original Movies. They tend to be in a similar style (sometimes more anime-ish inspired). - The people behind BATS end up getting involved in them quite often too.

What I never understood is how villains like "Red Claw" or "Calendar Girl" never made the transition to the comics AFAIK considering the demand for better female characters.
DC cartoons have done it right since the beginning. The movies are dark, the JL cartoon was full of naughty, adult humor over the heads of kids, and the batman cartoon was, is, and always will be at the top of the cartoon kingdom (I think it's better than the top contender, Pinky and the Brain, but that's just my thought).
... Casting wise I'm more than prepared to wait and see how it turns out. Considering how bleached out the Superman film was seems a bit odd that , skin wise at least, that here things are somewhat more naturalistic. ish.

Don't worry - certain people consider that the Joker in those Nolan films was in all ways perfect and nothing negative is every allowed to be said about them - they are right and everyone else should just too the line as that the way the internet and in fact the world works - oh wait thats BS.

Umm... this may be nitpicking but.... isn't the director's job to direct, not to write? So if you're blaming Nolan, the director, shouldn't you be blaming all the writers on the credits? (yes, Nolan is a writer of the film, but according to IMDB, he is one of four writers... so really, should be 25% to blame)

The Suicide Squad was never usually entirely villains. Rick Flag is also considered a hero, or at least an anti-hero.
Huh, Killer Croc more looks like a semi-large man with a skin condition... But I suppose they're going a more gritty/realistic feel instead of over the top comic.
Should work well for the film and team, since only 2 or 3 of them have any true 'superpowers' or anything supernatural.

Yeah, she looks more like a cheer leader with pale skin that what I know as Harley Quinn.
But I suppose Harley has had a lot of iterations. From the full body covering circus jumpsuit, to scantily clad skirts and fishnets. Interested to see how they handle her character, so many directions to go. Some Harley's are downright insane where others have shown her intelligence (used to be a respected Psychiatrist).

Killer Croc used to just be a guy with a bad skin condition. They adjusted it later to make him more reptilian. I'm okay with them using an older format for this movie.
Yeah, the ability to sit patiently for hours while someone carefully illustrates on your skin is a great way to show how crazy and dangerous a character is.
I always liked it when she was a bit more calculating. She's nuts, but not joker nuts (although she is nuts for the joker). She managed to work, relatively unnoticed, as a psychologist for some time after all.
Dark is ok (harley quinn's character is pretty dark when you think about what she does, and why), but I always like the joker and her to be wacky. It's one of the reasons I tend to prefer the comics.

None of the images I've seen so far look that appealing, but I won't write it off yet because snapshots often look way worse than how it ends up on-screen, and this film is trying a take on comic books that's way different to what we've seen before.
I don't like Harly's hair on photoes at all. What with this paly colours pink and light blue? It's like they could not make theit mind if they should leave her blond or go with Red/Blue hair from Suicide Squad comics. And btw I like her hair in Suicide Squad Comics.
I mean, it's not even out yet. So we can only really pass cursory judgment based on leaked photos. It was mentioned earlier in this thread that photo stills of on-the-set shots can be very misleading. These shots were intended to be dynamic, not as portraits. I'll wait for a trailer or clip.

No...I don't get that impression at all, beyond it being an ensemble film. Harley will probably be funny in a dark way, but I don't think there will be any dance-offs. It's a David Ayer film, after all. And I think it'll feel like a David Ayer film due to WB not being up the butts of their directors as much as Marvel is.

It's an ensemble cast of villains, basically. It's not a huge leap in to new territory, but the world of comic book movies moves real slow. It took about two decades from Superman to X-Men to finally get a movie that treats its subject matter with proper respect. And it took about another decade to finally get soemthing that wasn't an origin story or a sequel to an origin story, when The Avengers gave us a team up story.
That doesn't mean it's going to be good (and nothing in the images so far makes me think it will be) but the premise at least promises something new.

He's got no production credits in this one, and I don't think he's had any say in the development of the script. I think he might have learned his lesson, a second time, that just because he's a big star with decent range and great screen presence, it doesn't mean he's know what makes a good movie.
Yeah I don't get any of the Will Smith concerns. He's a very talented actor and has been in a variety of rolls.
Plus, he's only one member of the team so it's not like he will make or break the film. Only reason he shows up so much for Suicide Squad is because he's the biggest billable name.

One does quite a few good movie punctuated by the odd stinker, the other does mostly gak films and errr........won the Battle of Britain in WWII all by himself.
Affleck did The Town (and directed IIRC). Thats one more good movie than Smith.
Actually if you like Independence Day/Men in Black level movies he's very good at those (I do like them actually). If he's involved though, thats a good indication where this film might be headed.

Actually, I'm the opposite... I think for this "gritty" look the metal teeth work for him. Much more so than the idiotic head tattoos (yes, I know about the comics where he has a dragon tattoo on his back... If they wanted to go with the tattoo route, they shoulda gone with something better than the press shots)

I do like the purple suspenders or holster, or whatever it is he's wearing. The Joker should have an utterly appalling sense of style- and this is both too over the top to be accidental, and too ridiculous to be seen as stylish by any sane person.
I think he clearly had his teeth knocked out, because his back teeth seem to show decent dental hygiene. This contrasts sharply with versions of the Joker that depict him with teeth so unhealthy that they've turned mustard yellow.
And even though I'm joking around, I think what we've seen suggests that Leto's Joker has more narcissistic qualities than Ledger's raggedy-man nihilist.
I just saw it elsewhere before coming here; it still lingers on the internet so you may yet get your viewing. I try not to watch leaked stuff to much but this one I am really on the fence about. With it leaked, as I imagine they knew it would, the official will probably come sooner rather than later. Then again it is over a year away so maybe not.

True. AoA (not to be confused with Age of Apocalypse) was amazing. One of the better DC movies, up there with Batman: Under the Red Hood and Mask of the Phantasm. The animosity was awesome. Oh, and Flashpoint as well. That's another top quality one.

I think I'm less convinced by Joker's voice, based on that trailer than I am of Harley's... but then, it's hard to judge a whole characterization based on what he says in it.

I can't judge Joker by his voice because Mark Hammil is his voice to me. Will have to see more of him to judge since he does so very little there. Harley's voice seemed alright, but she doesn't really do much there either, despite her being most of the trailer. Maybe they should rename the movie Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad because that's what they made it look like.

Let's be honest, Harley is the one everyone wants to see. I'd argue the film has a few too many characters though - it reminds of me of the dwarfs in The Hobbit (who's names I can't remember).

I'm not a big fan of the Joker's teeth but it isn't a make or break sort of aesthetic choice for me. If they are explained as repairs from having been punched in the face a lot by Batman it will make a lot of sense though.
Yep, Batman was hanging on to the top of Harley's car (the pink one, obviously!), and apparently that scene will be a proper Batmobile chase, some footage leaked a while back of that.
I'm still not sold on this, though; it looks dangerously close to a generic "'ard nuts blow gak up" movie with just the DC label tacked on. I could be wrong, but of all the comic book stuff we've seen in the last few days, this is the one I'm least excited for.

Yeah, Ben Affleck is on IMDB for this film. Be interesting to see how they tie it in (or if they do). But honestly it really does look better than Bat vs. Supe which feels way to busy and crammed in where as this doesn't feel that way from the previews.

I think the problem with that Is that whilst it works for a cartoon, where everything is a bit exaggerated, it would be a bit over the top for someone to spend an entire film talking like that.
Don't get me wrong, BTAS Harley is the voice I hear whenever I read her in a comic, but even I would struggle to take it seriously if the accent appeared on screen.

After several viewings, you can hear the accent when she says, "Hope ya got insurance!" but it is definitely toned down.
As I understand it they will show how Joker and Harley got caught, thus the Batman on top of the car. There are a few seconds of people in Batman costumes shooting up stuff, but that isn't Batman.

IMO, seeing him in "action" with them, I like them a bit better than the first promo photos... I just wish they were solid metal replacements, not a "ring" of metal around each tooth. It's not a deal breaker for me, but it does at least seem to fit with the vibe of the movie.

I think the "BvS is too crowded!" and "WB is rushing!" things have just taken on lives of their own on internet forums. Somehow 3 supers in one movie is a mess in one instance, but 6 or 10 or 20 (or however many will appear in Civil War) is in other instances. I dunno.
SS will almost certainly give more time to and put more focus on a few members of the team -- Deadshot, Harley and Flagg figure here -- just as WW will be more of a guest star in BvS before getting her own feature just ahead of JL's arrival.
Anyway, I think a movie devoted to villains is awesome, and a real differentiator for the DCCU. Bad vs. evil...bring it on!

I'm more intrigued with this concept. It would be interesting to see them being very bad against Joker/minions, really going full Monty as it were on the bad guy front.

So is the Joker actually part of the suicide squad or not? All the footage of him seems to be based around him as part of the Harley backstory and being chased/captured by Batman. Nothing of him with the squad. By the look of it he'll primarily appear in flashbacks.
If it is like the animated Suicide Squad (Attack on Arkham) then he will be the monkey-wrench in their plan. He might even be the main antagonist. So I suppose to answer the question no he is not part of the squad. He is way to unpredictable for that. Even for a team of villains he is incredibly untrustworthy.
Yeah, I tend to think he's the target. Making Harley very important. Remember what Ayer said -- "Bad vs. Evil."
There were also rumors that Eisenberg would be in SS briefly. I dunno if that's true or false, but it at least feels to me like WB is setting up the villains as a consistent, organized(-ish) force in the DCCU. Maybe the formation of a Secret Society of Super-Villains or an Injustice League is what drives the creation of the JL instead of being the other way around.
I have heard a rumor (from someone who was at Comicon) that the Joker in Suicide Squad is actually Jason Todd, and not the "real" Joker.

I know that one of them was killed by the Joker, and the other, according to one of the Batman timelines, was tortured and disfigured to look like the joker (eventually thinking he WAS the Joker).
So, the point is: The Joker in SS is the one who thinks he is the Joker, and that accounts for all of the Tattoos, and grill.

The initial release pic made it look like they were trying too hard, but the vid brings him back down to a tilted and not quite right nutter, rather than the psychotic mastermind Joker of Heath Ledger.
They needed to have him with a new look and character to get away from Heath ledger's role and I think they look like they might pull it off.
I heard that rumor and think it's BS. I don't think that you ink Jared Leto to play a substitute Joker. And I think it's a bit too convoluted for general audiences. There are ANY NUMBER of bad wisecracks or jokes that existed there... If I had more context in the scene, I could probably come up with more, and better ones. Why could not the professional writers do so?
The recent Suicide Squad footage gave us a glimpse of Batman’s cameo in the film—but there’s even more to it than we realized. A new interview with Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder and his collaborators has revealed a lot more about how these films will connect up.
Snyder and company spoke to Empire Magazine (which is where you get the photo above, these, and some new ones below) about the entirety of the DC movie universe, how the films link up, how they’re being constructed, and specifics about multiple story points in Batman v Superman. Here are the highlights.
Minor spoilers follow.
Batman is the one who personally captured every single member of the Suicide Squad and in the trailer, we’re seeing a flashback to how he captured Harley Quinn. (No mention if he gets the Joker, too.)
Justice League was the jumping off point for this whole DC universe idea. “What we are doing is ground up all the way. It is one giant story,” Snyder said. “The first thing we had was the Justice League concept. The other movies, in a way, have to support that. That is our Wonder Woman, our Aquaman. They have their own creative concepts that supports them, but they do serve Justice League in the coming together of those heroes. I want all the other directors of the other films to be able to stretch their legs and do what they want, but at the same time there is a big interconnected universe. I have given everyone amazing access to our story, to me, and what we are doing. All the films have like-minded conceptual jumping on points.”
Batman will have a lot of history to him. “We are playing him 45 or 46” years old, Snyder said. “He has been Batman for 20 years. All the history is there. Was there a Robin at one time? Possibly. We want to assume that Batman has reached this point in his life and career as a superhero, and Superman represents a sort of philosophical change. He is a paradigm shift for Batman: ‘I’ve been fighting criminals all my life, trying to find justice, and now I am confronted with a concept that is transcendent to me.’ In the face of Superman, a man robbing a bank doesn’t matter. He’s having a crisis of conscience. ‘Am I really just a vigilante who stalks the alleys of Gotham?’ It is rich stuff that he deals with. Ben does an amazing job.”
The Batman v Superman trailer already reveals that Robin has died, but this interview strongly suggests Commissioner James Gordon will also already be dead. This would confirm a rumor that surfaced several months back.
To some, Batman may be considered the villain of Batman v Superman: “It’s a point of view thing,” said Snyder. “That is why ‘Dawn of Justice’ is the full title. What it does is allow us to start this conversation.”
Bruce Wayne will not be living in Wayne Manor in Batman v Superman. He’s in a lakeside house called “The Glasshouse.”
Snyder was very intimidated at the thought of doing a Batman solo film. “If it was a Batman movie it would be a much more difficult proposition because of how good Chris’ movies are,” said Snyder. “We live in gratitude to those movies. Chris set a tone for the DC Universe, and separated us from Marvel in a great way. We are the legacy of those movies.”
Clark Kent and Lois Lane are now “shacking up” together in Metropolis.
Aquaman has an “elusive cameo” in Batman v Superman. “You will understand he exists,” Snyder said.

Apparently David Ayer has a knack for bringing together groups of actors and creating camaraderie. But tattooing 'SKWAD' on each other goes beyond 'camaraderie'. I dunno if it has any real bearing on the movie, but it looks like this cast got super-tight and had a blast making the film. It doesn't seem like it could hurt, right?
The Hollywood Reporter got the BvS and SS casts together for a photo shoot at Comic-Con. The first pic they showed was everyone playing nice, but the second kinda shows the differences in the casts' personalities...maybe appropriately so.
While everyone else seems to be active in some capacity Affleck is looking at the camera with a "come at me bro" look. Batman isn't messing around it seems.
The guy under Adam Beach is also looking at the camera but has a goofy look on his face.

Yeah, I guess what I find funny about that pic is how many of the actors are almost in character.
On the SS side, you have the villains throwing up signs and obviously making noise. Meanwhile, Superman is quietly looking on from afar with reserved bemusement. Wonder Woman is smiling, but has her back turned and wants nothing to do with that riffraff. Lex looks like he wants to get away from ALL of them. And Batman is thinking about who he gets to break first, starting with the cameraman.

I did notice that the only person that is missing in photo is the Joker (Jared Leto). Perhaps he is the one taking the picture?
Well, it's two casts (BvS and SS), although Affleck is also in SS. And there were rumors that Eisenberg could have a cameo in SS also.
Jason Momoa (Aquaman) was rumored to be in BvS, but he hasn't been in any cast pics. So he probably only has a cameo (post-credits?), or perhaps not even that considering Snyder's statement on the matter was something like "you will be aware of his existence".
Leto's absence is interesting. Although IIRC, they were still shooting during Comic-Con and flew in and out quickly to make their appearance. Maybe Leto just didn't make the trip? Or maybe he's doing the method acting thing and distancing himself from the rest of the cast a little? He was sending weird gifts to his castmates...
