Welcome to June's Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge. For those who aren't familliar, this is a no-prize-related challenge open to any and all painters and hobbyists. Anyone can enter, from a newcomer to the hobby with your first box of minis to a multiple-time Golden Demon champion, and the winner each month will be decided by community poll, not just on the paintwork but on the effort, creativity and awesomeness of the finished piece!
For this month, the theme is: Monsters
Your entry should be a miniature/miniatures that could considered monstrous, unnatural or terrifying. These can be from any game, manufacturer or setting, and can, and may be converted as much as you like. The brief here is simple; it it would scare your average Joe watchman/soldier/civilian of its setting, it's fine to enter.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it. This could be unassembled, primed or even basecoated, so long as we can see where you are starting from. Entries that do not submit a Proof Picture will not be elligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. If you do not finish in time, the single most recent WIP picture may be submitted.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points are be used to form a league table, which is updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st June and will end at midnight GMT on the 30th June. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Voting Guidelines
When voting, consider the following as well as the quality of the paintwork:
- The creativity and originality of the entry
- The overall composition of the piece, such as basing, conversion and coherency between the models
- The relevance of the entry to the theme
- The effort the painter has put into the entry
Best of luck everyone, I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
I'm looking forward to it, getting a new airbrush and compressor tomorrow, going to have a go at a pale ghosty mist effect.
Ignore what's on there already, about 8 years ago, I ink washed it because I ran out of ideas.
That thing is fething huge, so I may have gone a little too adventurous this time.
@AoV: that's what I get from just copy-pasting from the old OP!
@queen_Anne's_revenge: I'm afraid that's a bit too painted to be taken as Proof that you're just starting work on it (unless you somehow did all that this morning ), do you have anything less painted that still fits the theme?
To clarify, the whole point of these challenges is to get people working on something new each month, so entering something you've already finished months ago rather defeats that purpose (hence why we ask for a proof pic, to prove you are doing something new). Last month you mentioned your marine was part of a larger and unfinished diorama so I let it go, but this looks mostly finished from what I can see (unless I'm looking at it wrong, only the creature looks unfinished?), and wasn't done this month, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to disallow it.
Apologies, but rules are rules. Feel free to enter something new, though, if you find yourself working on an appropriate mini this month.
The marine isnt finished either. Still need to do details and highlights. Plus the muzzle flashes are modelled on to the serpents carapice. Its cool.. Its your trainset.
Fair enough, he looked finished to be but if there's more to do then fine! I'll add you to the OP, and I look forward to seeing this rather cool mini done!
mad_eddy_13 wrote: I'm thinking of doing a macharius vanquisher superheavy tank, that would be pretty darn monstrous, no?
Best snap to it then buddy lol. That's not a small job!
I built one a couple of years ago from cardstock, I'm just prettying it up and doing a overall rebuild - its just details, sponsoons and the turret plating are left, the cardstock makes a nice base for the styrene sheet.

Hm, I like those! Especially the monochrome idea.
I also suggest "Blast from the Past!" because everything is better when you have to wipe dust off it first.
I'm in with an old Zoanthrope. Let's hope I get it done this month! Proof will have to be in 2 days as I've just realised that I stuck him in to strip pint about an hour ago and hadn't taken a proof first I have a photo of him in the bat if that would do though!!! (Thought it was quite funny seeing a bunch of Tyranids in a vat of brown liquid)
Automatically Appended Next Post: I think it's a Zoanthrope anyway??? Who can tell in the Tyranids gloop pit (you can see his leg in the top right photo):
I'll do a proper proof when he's stripped of his shocking old coat of paint.
My challenge is actually from a buddy. Our bet -- to make the Pillsbury Doughboy robot look threatening and mean. If I win, he buys me a kit of my choice; if not, I buy his next model
Oh yeah, baby, command tanks, you're comin' home to papa! (I wonder if they're still being released in this SM cycle)
Well, I have a duel, new vs old, High Officer coming from a race that practicess Genocide as a hobby vs Honourless black market trader pertaining to a race of ultra capitalist bug people, an Umbra Legate vs an Exrah Concordat Void Operator, both are pretty monstruous, both physically and psychollogically.

Speaking of which, a couple of you have suggested old minis as a theme. While I wouldn't do one that only allowed old stuff (as many won't have that), the next poll will definitely feature an option for minis (new or old) painted in a 'classic' style! Goblin Green Bases for everyone!

If you keep the wording open, you could have old minis in new schemes, or new minis in retro ones. Or old minis in retro schemes, for those with an old-school bent.
Love the screamer-killer there, classic ‘nid goodness. And the rest of the monsters showing up. This is going to be a fun month!
angelofvengeance wrote: @TP^DC: That jar looks like it's a biological specimen container in a Magos Biologis' lab lol.
It's why I had to photograph it, I chucked em in the nearest jar and realised what I had done!
Cool entries everyone.
Para - please don't make me do green bases Since my return to the hobby I've tried so hard to make my minis look like it wasn't a 3 year old who painted them!!!!!!!
However, if you wanna do the "new in old style"/"old in new style" combined option I'm absolutely there because I only have old stuff
Nevelon wrote:Love the screamer-killer there, classic ‘nid goodness.
Glad you like, hope I can do it justice.

I was always the odd one out back when I started playing, I painted all my bases with Scorpion Green. I am sure all my friends were impressed.
"I have seen war in all its forms. I have seen feral world savages braining each other with stones, and I have monitored the death of a whole planet at the hands of a virus bomb. I have seen Space Marines drop to certain death, and win. I have seen Titans crush whole platoons underfoot. But there is no more stirring sight in war than the charge of massed cavalry."
For this months entry, that I will actually try and finish, I will be entering in my death korp death riders. Mass cavalry charges already inspire fear into men and xenos alike, but add in together the foreboding appearance of the krieg guardsmen and their modified mounts that can shrug off heavy bolter shots it takes the fear to another level.
Okay, I'm in! I'll hopefully be doing this Helbrute model from the Dark Vengeance box set:
The only problem I discovered when I took this proof pic is that due to the fact that I wasn't very careful when I slapped him together, there are gaps all over the model. If I can't fill them with a little liquid green stuff, I will probably have to do something else (fortunately, I have the DV chaos lord and a Daemon Prince that need some paint, so I have more than one possible plan B).
FearPeteySodes wrote:Nice! Scratchbuild Kataphron type dealie?
I must admit I had to Google exactly what that was - but looking at the pictures, yes, that's what I'm going for. Just with less guns and less wires all over the place.
angelofvengeance wrote:@ 40K Pirate, for a moment I thought that was one of those cute little bomb tanks from FW.
I think you're right! I'm using a template made by Eli Patoroch for a little tank called the 'cyclops'. I had to scale it down to 30% to fit on a 25mm base, but otherwise it looks like it's the same vehicle as the picture you posted.
I'll have to post an updated proof picture once I've got it fully assembled.
There's a distinct lack of tentacles in this topic... I'm disappoint.
Oops! It hadn't really dawned on me that a 'past' theme could wind up being restrictive - to me "from the past" could be time travel, retro themed paint jobs, modern minis boggling at older ones (Yarrick meets Yarrick), digging out something you want to revisit (dude by side improvements - a "draw this again" style attempt)... Not just "look how old my thing is, peasants!"
But my logic is extremely opaque by my own admission.
Yeah, this is my proof, all stripped and out of the gloop!
I'm going to try a new basing technique this time rather than plain/resin. Seen what looks like an easy basing technique which I thought was worth a shot.
I'm planning on doing some friends for him too, but only if there's time, I'll update my proof pic if I do this.
Will have to ask for a ruling on this one and whether I can have it, its been basecoated only and I'm now gonna add some more cutty and nasty bits and make the base more interesting before completing. But has it been painted to much to start now?
Yep, that's cool to enter. Basecoated a single colour is fine, it's anything after that I'll ask questions about, and decide then based on how much is done/yet to do. If, say, one member of a squad of five is WIP then that won't disqualify you, whereas one of two probably would it it were near finished.
Next month I'll give the rules a general tidy up and clarify this stuff properly next month.
I'm in! Here is my Arco-Flagellant with chainsaws for hands and a spear through his gut, primed black.
I figure the premise of these guys is monstrous enough, and monsters are normally hard to kill, hence the spear.
I've been a lurker on Dakka lately, and this competition actually inspired me to register as a new user and join the community. I've got a hulking (soon to be) green monster that's been sitting on my shelf awhile. I like the kitbash I did so much that I'm afraid to mess it up by painting it. Also, since he's standing on a decapitated head, it's a bit more gory than my usual style (I don't normally paint blood on, etc, but there's no getting around it this time). I've modeled and painted like 5 minis since building this guy, and I figure that by entering a competition (even an unofficial one), now I have to paint him up proppa, and soon, no more excuses. Here's my "proof pic":
Needed a kick in the ass to start painting again, and here it is!
I am entering the first phase of my looted wagon. The finished product will (hopefully) be an Araknorak Spider that has been wrangled by some industrious Orks. For the monster competition though, I am going to stop and having only modeled and painted the main spider bod itself.
Screw it, I'll enter this month.
Here's a mutant thug that I've been working on on-and-off. I need to do a bunch of cleanup (mould lines, a tonGS touchups, general stuff). I've improved with putty quite a bit since I sculpted the gasmask, so we'll see how much work needs to go into fixing that up before I slap some paint on.
Proof:
Some nice models entererd so far that im looking forward to seeing people finish. I may give this a bash I have a few ideas what i may doo if i can find what boxes i have them stored in.
It is supposed to be a sand worm. One of the forgeworld monsters.
I think of Dune. If it was more Earthwormy/phallic shaped it would be a Dune worm.
I would love to enter this month but, sad truth is I am a IOM player atm (though Eldar and BFG tempt me.)
Until I get my Knight Warden, and then funds for that it ain't happening as they are going together on a battle base. (He'll be charging in to punch that fether in the face.) Unless I sell my TV... hm. Tempting. I already have 80 in store credit for a Knight, and my TV is easily 100$. Sad reality is, even if I had funds I am a new painter and I'd hate to ruin a model with a bad paint job or mess up the ocean base I have planned.
I won't lie, I had to gather your thoughts, I can't contain my excitement, I will post my progress here since you guys are motivating though.
Hey Para, any chance you could include links to the front page of the previous rounds in the first post of each round?
Also to the results page, as this section of the forum does have a high thread turn over and it doesn't take long for a page to disappear from the first 2-3 pages.
Some nice looking monsters and not all the usual suspects.
Welcome Gulgog TufToof, I did exactly the same last month and its been great fun. That's a very nice looking Ork you've made there
Some very monstrous entries already, looking forward to seeing them painted.
Sadly I'm away with work for the first two weeks of this month but that wont stop me since I've taken all my stuff with me (got to have something to do other than go to the bar when I'm in a hotel for that long) I will still be entering, proof and WIP pics will come when I'm back of a hopefully semi-decent snakebite warboss conversion.
Good luck everyone, may the final entries give you nightmares

Not a bad idea at all. The League does have a link to all the old threads, but I'll see about linking the old challenges and League in each OP.

Another option would be to use the article section to make a home page for the contest, and just link back to that each month.
Hey guys.
Just a quick update on my Warboss, I´m entering this month.
I would love to get some feedback from you to see if I´m going to the right direction with it.
The Warboss of Kanvuss has inspired me to do that.
So, what do you think?
I´m still not sure which head I´ll put on him, but I´m playing with the idea to magnetize the heads, so I could switch them untill I made another 4 bosses.
Holy hell Kustomer that's going to be sweet! That yelling head on th far right is absolutely sick and gets my vote for sure. That said get the pose down and choose the right one that fits in context.

Yes, that is indeed an old zooan.
I plan on either painting my sporocyst or (if I can break out the magnets out and think I'll get it done in time) a harpy/hive crone.
Well... I called on some debt, as my parents owe me almost half a grand.
Someone got their worm today! Too bad it takes a month for FW to arrive, plus I still have to pay for the Knight Titan. I definitely won't make this contest but, I will give it my best shot depending on how things go.
Here is my entry for this month. My Skytyrant. He will be joined on the battlefield by a mass of Gargoyles who will ferry him into combat. If I finish him up early, I might add some Gargoyles to my challenge. He's currently primed white with a quick and sloppy base coat underway. I'll be painting him in my Hive Fleet Gigas colors.
Seems like good momentum to commit to painting this guy.
Been working on the 'Stormfiends', I've managed to get most of the structural work down - I just need a dollop of green stuff and should be good to paint.
I'll hopefully get some WIP pictures on my Blog tomorrow.
Hey guys,
thank you for your feedback.
I´m calling this "monster" done.
I chose the screaming head - and magnetized it.
Now all I need is to watch tons of Youtube vids how to paint a warboss and don´t try to ruin this dude.
Pics will follow.
Progress Update! My Helbrute has been sprayed with Army Painter Pure Red and has had the fleshy parts painted with Bugman's Glow. I'm worried that due to the fact the model was primed black, the red spray has hurt some of the detail, particularly on the left-front side of the armor. Hopefully I can still work with it. Going to do the metal trim next (ugh...so tedious-but so cool looking at the end!). That Pure Red spray sure is brighter than I anticipated (closer to Evil Sunz Scarlet than Mephiston Red). Rather than be unhappy with that, I'm gonna roll with it and ultimately do all my mortal Khorne-worshippers in the brighter color, they will certainly be eye-catching on the TT! After I do a bit more work on the 'brute I'll post some WIP shots!
Paradigm, is the Grand High of the Dark Angels (Asmodai) monstrous enough? Given the fluff, he's one short step from a raving psychopathic Fallen, who has the Dark Angels quaking in their power armoured slippers and renders mortals catatonic
After all day yesterday mucking about with and getting the knight primed, finally got some work done on The Chosen today. Basecoat layers all done and hit with a double null wash. Progress!!
Farseer Anath'lan wrote: Paradigm, is the Grand High of the Dark Angels (Asmodai) monstrous enough? Given the fluff, he's one short step from a raving psychopathic Fallen, who has the Dark Angels quaking in their power armoured slippers and renders mortals catatonic
Let's see... An 8-foot tall slab of muscle and bionics, hundreds of years old, who wears a skull mask All The Time and has a reputation for torture that makes Chaos Space Marines weep?
Hah, everyone seems to have gone Mad Max crazy recently! Oddly, I actually have no interest in the film myself, but I'd definitely consider it for a theme. Maybe throw it a bit wider like 'post-apocalyptic' or 'ramshackle' for the wierdos like me that haven't seen it.
I don't actually paint that quickly. When I paint something I lock myself in a room with no food until the model is finished. That Crisis Suit took about 3 hours of work.
Here's a WIP of my Hive Tyrant. Haven't done much with the wings yet - they are magnetized, so they are off for painting. Almost done with the basecoats. Got some more black bits to detail on his chest and around his body in places. Then i'll move on to the highlighting or start on the wings.
WiPs of the boys. Red armour is pretty much done the now. Just needs a toning wash and that'll be that part done. School is closed till next Monday (we think) and the wife is off to Oz for 10 days tomoro so looks like painting season is open!!!!
Photos are a bit overexposed - sodding iPad but you get the idea where they're going
I know it´s just the 9th of the month, but I had al lot of time to do this monster.
So, this one is in the books.
His name is Grimteef Morsnik, leader of a big bunch of Bad Moons.
He is never to busy to crush some skulls, no matter whose skull it is.
Orks, Marines, Chaos ... he doesn´t care as long as he can crush something.
He has been in a lot of battles against all kinds of enemies.
He lost his left arm while he fought some Nids but killed some more with his right.
His jaw was replaced after his got chopped off by another Warboss, who tried to take over Grimteefs place.
This has been one hell of a fun to build and to paint.
I´m looking forward to see a lot more super fantastic minies this month.
Thanks to Paradigm for the whole work you put into these projects.
Wow, that's a mighty good mini! As I said to another entrant last month, I applaud anyone who can just 'get' that natural look to orky conversions and paint jobs!
Broodlord vs Blood Angel. The question is, which is the bigger monster?
And here's where we're up to last night:
Going for a cleaner/neater job on these than my usual 40k fare, we'll see how that goes! There will also be a diorama base for the two, probably a starship interior.
I'll get it on this when I've raided my box of unpainted models and chosen something suitably scary. I reckon a Chaos Terminator Lord is pretty monstrous...
I believe my old clunker is a Mist or Ghost dragon, one of the old box sets, so I'm researching how to do an ethereal effect this afternoon.
Got my new airbrush compressor rigged up for the base coats, but I'm not skilled enough to do much beyond that without brushes.
Fun afternoon!

Looking good so far. With that chainsword, I’m going to bet on the BA for the bigger monster. Maybe next month we need “overkill” or “compensating for something” as a category.
Be'Lakor is complete. This was the second finecast models I've built and painted. I now see why people dislike it so much. The amount of little bits that needed to be trimmed was astounding. Many couldn't be seen until I started painting the darn tootin' thing. Arrgh!
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the final product. The "gold" was a poor attempt at NMM. I like how it looks, but its not very NMM
Here is my contribution this month. A nurgle lord with the burning brand of Skalathrax or alternatively a nurgle sorceror with familiar. I have had this conversion in mind for a while, but a lord on foot never makes it into my lists, so priority has been low.
It will be touch and go if I can really finish the paint job in time as I am a horribly slow painter. But never mind, it's just for fun, right?
So my girlfriend and I are going on vacation towards the end of this month and I am waiting on my order. (Got my shipped email five days after the order.) I would say bah humbug about how long it takes for their shipping but, they have good replacement services. I also can't pout because of a vacation! (Third or fourth in one and a half years.) I feel bad about this now but, I'm so excited for this nonetheless.
I'm really unhappy with this so far, I dunno why. Maybe I'm just in a funk? it's a sort of creamy sky blue in person, fading to Necron Abyss. I took it outside and put it on the grass cutting bin for some decent light, but it's kinda gone all tangy.
I need to do the pure whites, eyes, claws, base, etc, but right now I'm just kinda eeeehhhhhh about the model. There's like four different blues gone in there already and I still hate it.
Before highlighting:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Woah, Dakka, it really isn't that colour. Let me see if I can pull that back.
I'd say a pure white drybrush on the uppermost areas would do a lot for that.
After some discussion on my blog, I've settled on the composition for my piece. Now I just need to spruce up the base a bit, and possibly add a back wall.
angelofvengeance wrote:Looks like you picked a PITA piece this month Buttery! lol
I've had this sucker for 8 years, I just wanted it to be done, I'll be honest.
I may add a second mist monster if I get him done (themed), I've just found my old ghost/vapor horse rising from the sea.
Paradigm wrote:I'd say a pure white drybrush on the uppermost areas would do a lot for that.
I'm nursing it with some light powdery white and the old GW tank brush, it's going a lot better. I'll be hand lining the upper ridges, which is pretty calming.
Any thoughts welcome.
Definitely needs a wall or something to make a corner, I feel.
I would add a wash of Necron Abyss to targeted areas to deepen your shaded areas. The highlights you've applied get kind of lost without some shading nearby as well.
Yeah. I'm taking it whiter and whiter, but I'm losing my will to do anything with it today. To be honest it harks from a time when I was living in a bit of a crap situation and it's bringing that with it, weirdly.
I'm gonna have a crack at my second idea and go back to the dragon if I feel less sulky later. They'd pair together as mist basedl animals so here's a proof pic.
It's gonna be a sea/water horse, with seafoam spray if I can find my basing mats.
Well, I'm go to throw my hat into the ring again. Even though this was the first monstrous creature I got for my tyranids, I still haven't painted this model.
Dakka, meet Tina.
I figured of all the tyranids, Tervigons are probably one of the scariest to encounter. Not only are they aliens the size of a tank, but they spew out little baby aliens. Like alien Russian dolls.
I'm getting my buzz back. Sadly not with the dragon. There's always tomorrow.
This is a modified Reaper night mare, I'm making into a white horse of the sea instead, so the flames will be seaweed, the mane and tail will be misty foam. I'm trying to find my old vallejo water effects to throw up some waves on the beach.
So I finished the troll, apart from an earring I missed and some basing stuff to add, and got three buddies ready for joining him. I'll bust out the proper camera once they're all done. The lighting is crap on these.
I can't seem to figure out my photos. I thought it was just cause of my phone but even post from my desktop. they all turn sideways.
could somebody lend a hand?
There are some good looking models coming along here.
Got some more work done, still lots more to go.
Slathered a little more wash on then I realized and now my black feels a little flat, gonna focus on that next.
c&c appreciated.
cheers.
I get the same thing with my iphone and ipad. If I take a portrait (up'n'down) shot, for some reason it turns it 90 degrees. Only real solution I found for quick WiP shots that don't turn is to always shot them landscape
@Januine- make sure the home button end is on your right hand side when you take landscape shots otherwise, when you upload it (from any tablet or phone) it will be upside down lol.
I am back from my business trip now so can upload the proof images etc.
I am hoping a Warboss on a Rhinox is monstrous enough for the avg human. I hadn't figured out exactly how I was going to do it all yet so some parts wont be used but here you go
Spoiler:
and some terrible WIP shots due to light in the hotel room
Spoiler:
Had to use flash and it really brought out the highlights, they aren't that prominent.
I'm Impressed that theres some good looking finished entries already
iPhone pictures and phone pictures turn sideways, even when taken portrait, it's a peculiarity of the boards. I upload them to Dropbox, download them on the PC and use them, and it fixes it.
"The forum always does this." [Forum does not do this]
Thanks guys, I'm hoping to get it finished apart from the Vallejo water gel tomorrow. I screwed up the.. upper side of the ankle-knees on the back legs (see my dazzling horse knowledge, sorry bronies), but otherwise quite happy.
I haven't got an eye colour planned. Lime green? There's some green in it now... Gold?

Nice looking mini here matey- looks cool!
For the eyes- Ulthuan Grey with a glaze of Waywatcher Green on top should make it really pop!
My entry for theJune competition. I thought it was some form of Undead Troll but it turns out it's a Plague Elemental. Excellent classic model which belongs here and a paint job I'm actually really happy with. Enjoyed this one nice and simple with a good flow to the painting. Hope you enjoy it and thanks SJM for telling me what it is!
Made some solid progress tonight. Very pleased with the result. The body is now attached to the base and is, for all intents and purposes, finished. May spot a small touchup here or there after I put the mini down for the night and pick it back up tomorrow, but overall I'm very pleased. Next up I'll be painting the head and then attaching it to the body to complete the mini, hopefully tomorrow.
Here's the updated WIP shots.
(Before anyone mentions it, I see the faint mold line on the back-pack protrusion, but I honestly didn't know it was even there until I uploaded these pictures, so when I say it is barely noticeable IRL, please know it truly is, as I didn't even see it during painting. I'm normally very fastidious about mold line cleanup.)
Thanks for looking. Quite pleased with the progress so far. Hope to have the head finished in short order!
Thank you kindly for that. It's a lot of subtle drybrush and then layering with blacks and greys. Started with the old Shadow Grey color, then went over that with a light drybrush of codex grey, and finished it off with a good heavy coat of Asurmen Blue. I went back in after that and did some 'clean up' work with more black, filling in and touching up areas where I'd gotten a little messy/heavy handed with the drybrushing. Once that was done, I did one more coat of Asurmen Blue to kind of help blend everything together, and once that was done I did the metalics and belts, inking & detailing them as I went.
I've gone ahead and started on the head. Just finished laying down the bone white color and painting the green gem/lens of the right eye. Next will be the metallic work, and then I'll finish up by painting the animus speculum. Not sure what colors to go with for it. Blue is the current front runner, but I'm also considering a nice purple color. Haven't made up my mind as yet. Will play around with colors and see what jumps out at me.
Take it easy for now and thanks for the kudos there Angel.
he's only been sitting on a shelf above my paint station for about 13 years so I figured he's due a coat of paint!
Oh wow, he's lovely!
My Vallejo water effects gel arrived today, so I'm going to hopefully finish up the Kelpie and then slap that on. It'll probably take until the end of the month to cure, I'm a bit nervous.
I've made significant progress on my Helbrute this week. I have finished all the basecoating (other than a few minor touchups where I got paint where it didn't belong ). Here is a (poor) pic:
Now I've gotta shade, highlight, and base this beast. Should be able to make it happen before the deadline though. I like what I've seen from everyone else so far, should be a good monstrous month!
Oops! I forgot to post mine here... whelp, my entry for the month is done!
T'was done on a bet, to try to make the Kastelan Robot look "fierce" rather than "dweeb". There are so many things that I don't like about the original model that it's not funny -- like the idiocy of splitting twinlink heavy phosphor to one on either hand (and making them dinky compared to the carapace gun), the strange wiry connector on the backpack, the goofy face, and of course, the total lack of shoulder pads (what a departure from 40k aesthetic ).
Sweet sweet work Talys and what an improvement on the standard kit. Not sure about the dainty ballerina feet though.....ahh, even a robot has the right to dance

Hahaha! yeah, right? There's so much wrong with that kit that it's not funny. I seriously have no idea how they took a really cool looking Thanatar Siege Automata and turned it into that thing. And thank you
Here's a WIP; I've got the basecoat done, and I'm starting to worry that I won't have time to finish. My social life is getting in the way of my anti-social life But hey, all that's left to do is a wash, highlights, metallics, back glyph plate (these things are the bane of my painting existence), paint the severed head, basing, and splatter blood everywhere; how long can that possibly take, right?

Hey Talys- your Kastelan is on the Dakka front page

Just a bit of WIP, not got far with the main monster at all this month, really gonna have to do some cramming to get it finished. Managed to paint a suitably horrified chap for the base tho.
Nice trousers Gulgog, pinched from a pointy eared git dancing git?
Fetch the harpoons, time to tear a sea drake asunder. Space Marine Librarian for scale. I wasn't happy with how tall the worm/drake was so I used a resin block to boost height, pinned it with a coat hanger. Great news about this being an ocean base, I will have a spout of waves covering it all when he bursts from the waves.
There is no way I'm finishing this due to me being slow, lazy, and unable to afford a Knight. Also, my life is getting in the way.
I've just painted my sand and started building the 'waves" around the sea-horse and I am crapping myself, truth be told.
I've chopped and curved some transparent plastic and I'm building on it with the thick water gel that sets hard.. This is the first coat and looks really scrappy.
Slow and steady.. Slow and steady... [Looks up] Oh Jesus wept, what did I do to my figure? [Sits on hands as to leave it alone to dry]

I cry myself to sleep on the workstation every day, oh my poor models. I just don't know when to quit. My buddy who owns the FLGS states "I have too much going on in my mind." I had a perfect figure, tried to use small pellets to make it MK5. It... took a beautiful helmet and made it average.

@angelofvengeance - thanks for letting me know!!
Not sure if you're being sarcastic due to resin block, or if you are really complimenting me. If the former, I totally earn it. If the latter, well then I'm just flattered.
Loving that model stormwall! Is the space marine part of the base? If he is, you should paint him up as a Iron snake.
In other news I literally have gotten nothing done painting wise lately. Just havent had the itch, but I should have them done come the end of the month since they are due in a competition next week.

He's my "scale size marine," for photo references to show the size of things I use in the blog. My very own Nordic survivor librarian. Going to paint him up with a ton of swirls and freehand, I was fortunate enough to have a woman who helps me buy my "nerd toys,"
I loved the Lord Executioner model, I feel really fortunate enough that she got it for me to convert. I understand him being an Iron Snake as well since they have that fluff but, on Stenheim these Sea Serpents are basically a reference to the Lindworm, and also Jörmungandr.
I spoiled the links to wikipedia, as the second one shows a mural with Thor's other hammer.
Now I'm back to scratch building a dropship when I should be spackling some hills for the LOER contest and doing other things. Curse you hobby ADD. My biggest problem is my LOER entry has become tedious and boring, and this one is waiting on a Knight Warden I have in reserve from GW (using store credit I have build up, as I am broke concerning the hobby budget,) but, I do not have enough money to fulfill the order. At least it gives me time to make more funds/plan it. I may go for either a classic Imperium look, a Valkyrie, or something in the same vein/style as Dark Souls.

So, any thoughts on other topics for next month. The new/old one discussed earlier is certainly going in, and 'Slow and Purposeful' makes it through from last month, anyone got any other cool suggestions?
Maybe you could do "War Machines", requiring that the entry is a mechanical contrivance of some kind. It could be a vehicle, robot, gun emplacement, or something else mechanical, but it can't just be a person in armor or something.

Stormwall, that's 100% a compliment
I'm expecting great things out of the finished wyrm!

That one I like, plenty of scope within the theme. Might change it to Stealth just to open it up a bit more, but yeah, that works. Someone back in the thread mentioned elements as a possible idea, which I liked, so the list for next month will be:
Old/New (not sure how we're defining old yet; I'd say pre-2000 sculpts/styles, is that old enough?)
Stealth
Slow and Purposeful
Elemental
Sound OK?
Poll will go up tomorrow or Monday, and I as m logging all these suggestions for future use so keep them coming if you have any more ideas!
Yay, good news... I've finished one of the Mega Nobs so I'll at least have something to enter! I'll try to get some pictures up at some point. Not sure if I'll get the other two done but who knows.
Since the theme is Some Kind of Monster, I should mention that this guy is Nob size; the top of a normal ork boy's shoulders are about where his biceps are.
Thanks to Paradigm for providing the motivation to finally get this guy painted, I hope you all like it!
Feedback welcome and appreciated. Better pictures will be taken and added to this post later today.
I went with some subtle and limited Object Source Lighting on the pieces of the helmet that stuck out about as far as the cowling flange pieces of the Animus Speculum. Overall I'm very pleased with the paint job. Hope you all enjoy the finished product.
Thank you Paradigm. As I said, better pictures will be forthcoming.
And SJM, thank you. That black was tricky to paint properly, and I'm still not sure I'm completely satisfied with my execution on it, but overall it looks good I think.
Black is very tough to do correctly, but I wanted a challenge and this mini definitely provided that for sure. At first, I thought I'd do a gem work on the interior of the animus speculum but then I thought why not go for a glowing energy effect. I'm very pleased with the result and the limited OSL effect I did around the very furthest forward bits in front of the face mask.
Got some stiff competition this month for sure. Hopefully I'll get a decent showing. It's my first entry into the Monthly Painting Challenge, so I'm excited to see how I stack up versus the rest of the competition here.
I've been painting over the weekend, I've managed to finish one of the Mega nobs so I'd thought I would share. This guy was difficult to paint, I had to get my brush at all sorts of silly angles to get at the detail, anyway, pics -
With just over a week left not sure I'll come close to finishing the other two and I wouldn't want to rush them. May as well consider this my entry for now!
wow SJM that is awesome, I want to comment on so many parts of it but will sum it up with I love the details you have put onto it and the paint job is impressive. You have created a brilliant Ork.
Stunning as always SJM! Every time o see one of your painted minis I'm just blown away by the composition, the use of colour, the great texture you seem to get! Awesome!
And while I can't hope to compete with that, I'm calling mine done too.
In the cramped confines of a Space Hulk, a Blood Angel makes a futile last stand against an alien horror!
Wow - gorgeous work guys. Absolutely cracking stuff. I'm gonna try and get mine in this week too once I've recovered / fixed a minor purity seal spray disaster ><
Proof pic of the last two trolls, now they are stripped and ready for some primer.
Incidentally, I don't use purity deal, but I've found with other varnishes that have fogged, rubbing some olive oil into the mini is usually enough to make it go clear again.

Oh crap, what happened? :(
Scariest monster in the topic: GW's spray.
yeah - won't be using that crap ever again. they didnt frost too badly and I got some brush on matt varnish over here that seems to have fixed the problem thank god. scary stuff

I'm glad you fixed it!
My roomie told me of a guy who sprayed two 2000pt armies with the stuff one afternoon and it fogged them all. The local GW manager ended up having to deal with that one, quite rightly so I think.
Also! Horse butt!
I am about 3/4 done with the water and can go back to painting the Kelpie again soon. Need to work on smoothing it out into a curve now that I built up the height and joined it to the creature.
Excuse how milky this one still is, it's between coats.
Not fond of the blue paint I put on the first layer of water, but it's now way to late to change. Hoping I can slap some seafoam over it so it's hidden.
Thx fella. I got lucky(ish) Freaked out when it happened, esp after the amount of hours that went into them . gorgeous figs to paint and then for them to look like they'd just journyed north of the wall......soul destrying. However,.....this mad korean matt varnish i picked up seems to have done the trick....few metallic highlights will have to be redone but that's fine.
loving that kelpie btw....glorious work. what's the water made from? looks cracking
Very nice paintwork, and it certainly fits the theme! If you look at the rules, though, you'll need to enter a picture of it unpainted to qualify for voting.

Sorry if that's a problem!
That.. may be a problem Ah well I'll check if i have one when i get home from work

Glad the rescue varnish worked, I've never managed to fix varnish feth ups, despite all the tips and guides online.
The water is Vallejo Water Effect, the stuff that comes in a big white (or blue) tub and you spread by hand. It's a strange material between sloppy and solid, it "sweats" and slides around sometimes, and whilst you'd think setting time depends on thickness, sometimes areas will dry in minutes, sometimes a day later, nothing. It has the edge on PVA glue because it doesn't shrink.
I finally have something to show, still very WIP obviously, but the base is done and the lower half basically is, too (few touch ups on the metallics).
There's some great stuff in this thread, picking a winner is going to be tricky...
yeah, i am curious too, looks cool but i can't figure it out
by the way everyone the models are so nice, makes me want me to paint more
thank you for sharing them !!
Ha, I know right? It's an old daemonhost model. iirc it came in the Coteaz + henchmen box. Figured it would do the trick as something that scares the pants off an average human. Given it's appearance maybe talking about pants coming off isn't a great idea...
I've ended up at the other end of the country with no access to my model until the day after this ends. Beautifully orchestrated. I may get a chance in Sunday if the stars... I mean trains... align.
Sock, according to the sidebar, you're in Germany, home of Goth festivals like WGT! Step it up fella!
unless scourge count as monsters i cant submit anything again
too bad i didnt finish converting my sleneesh marine, i cant seem to figure out what hes missing
LordRahl wrote: unless scourge count as monsters i cant submit anything again

I'd say Scourge probably count as pretty monstrous- they're surgically altered Dark Eldar with bat wings and clawed feet! And they feed off the pain inflicted on their victims..
I've always had a soft spot for all the stone trolls, but never had the money for them back in the day. It's been quite a satisfying experience, hunting them all down on fleabay, stripping them, and finally getting to paint them.
My painting skills are miles away from many in here, but if it was a competition for most satisfying paint, I'd win hands down.
I know I've no chance of winning, because some of the painters on here are freakishly awesome, but I've really enjoyed finishing my first Dakka challenge. I always drooled over these models when I was young and skint, and I finally managed to track them all down, in various states of disrepair on fleabay. A fortunate side effect of that was I ended up acquiring the three metal river trolls as part of the horse trading, but I'll save them for another challenge!
Anyway, after a month of dettol baths, scraping crappy paint out of recesses with a needle, and lots and lots of blue, I finished a unit (a rare event for me...) I went for a poor imitation of the old 'eavy metal scheme, because I think it's perfect. Finally exhausted my pot of 1990's Bestial Brown, so I couldn't finish painting the movement tray, but I've more on the way. I'd have done a composite picture thingy, but I detest photoshop, so apologies for the wall of pics.
Thanks for looking. Looking forward to the stealth challenge now.
ok well before its too late id like to submit my hat in the ring
i have 2/5 finished two others waiting on an arm each
the thirds rather large busted chest has just been primed
Ah, that explains it! I was thinking he looked a few times bigger than Eggs' ones, but didn't know if that was just because he was a bigger race of Troll or a different scale.
