I really like the stitched hood on that one cultists - it's got a very "painterly" quality - like cover art from a 1980's or 90's White Dwarf or something.
And now of course I need to buy those cultists next time I do a UK order...

Maybe a bit of both then. Mostly rotting flesh and then bring attention to certain areas with brighter colours to show just how far the "blessing" has gone.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
That sounds like the best option all round Dr H.I've just got to decide what colours to chuck in the first wash. A base with a hint of green is traditional... but I could start with a grey blue or a pinkish brown and work up to a green glaze at the end, make it more interesting.

This is what I've got so far... not done yet though... More bright colours and highlights needed I think.
I started with a mixed grey, green and sepia wash. Once that was dry wounds were picked out in german orange and boils were highlighted in beige and pale rose, teeth are a pale flesh and a mix of green ink + metallic medium did for the plague-swords. deep areas are shaded with black wash, particularly around the belly and armour wash is applied to the swords. Cherry red wash is liberally applied to wounds, boils and swollen areas:

Yeah, the 6 Chosen models took me over 30 hours in total, whereas the two 10 man Cultist groups took about 40 hours in total. 20 models vs 6...
What kinda price did you get if you don't mind telling? What ballpark anyway? I'm probably selling them so curious.
As I keep track of these things I can give you exact numbers for the whole box:
These were all sold through ebay (in a friend's shop), so I didn't really get the best prices for all of them.
Excluding my time, I did make a good profit on the boxes' cost though.
Bronze level models;
SM Tactical squad = £40
SM Bikers = £35
Chosen = £40
Cultists (Tetchvar) = £45
Cultists (Anarkus) = £40
Silver level;
SM Terminators = £55
Gold level models;
SM Librarian = £35
SM Company master = £25
Kranon = £25
Helbrute (Heavily converted, magnetised, with all the extras) = £175
I found the squads were much easier to sell compared to the individual characters, but as it's ebay, results may vary. Good luck.

Hello dakkites. I am drowning in miniatures at the moment and had a wide choice today. I decided to hold fire on genestealer hybrids and go for the order and simplicity of space marines. This is how far I got today, a wash of sepia-grey and some nice bright green and silver on all the metals, then I worked armour wash into the lower legs and feet for a dirty battlefield grime. Next I'll ink in red on the guns and insignia.

Of course when I say I applyed a wash, its not enough just to splash it on and hope for the best, you need to control the wash and keep an eye on it while it dries, adding extra here and there or taking it away as necessity demands. I use a brush and sometimes my fingers...

Hi Dr H and Ruglud.
I think I spent the most amount on these just making sure they were perfectly smooth before I started. For some reason bits of dust and fluff had landed on them while they were freshly primed so I spent half an hour with a pair of tweezers on them! True story...
Progress, metals washed, red inked in, eyes dotted, purple added. I used winsor blue, which sure looks purple to me.

I get that sometimes. The fluff/dust/lint thing. I think it is from clothing. Moving your arms about dislodges it from the fabric and it floats around and eventually settles precisely where you do not want it to. I've taken to painting in short sleeves. I'd rather it just end up in the lint trap in the dryer, TBH.

Well I've been working on the terminators and they're pretty much done to my tabletop standard, but I'm probably going to take them to the next level with some highlights and wotnot, do somthing funky with the power sword.

Congratulation, soon to join the rest of us dafties trying to explain away the bill for the modelling to the loved one, or have you found the rare and illusive "enabler" partner!
Personally the Europe thing is all a non-sense, and until we all get over our tribal roots and start thinking globally instead of selfishly (me included) people will suffer, and poor will be poor and rich will be richer. No doubt the shops will up the prices, we will pay more taxes, some will always take advantage. But I will still have to go to work on Monday, and life will go on, still with nowhere near enough time to do our beloved modelling. So it really counts for squat.
Now whats next on the master painters bench then..
Oh and have you seen this...

Ca - They're alright... maybe they are a little on the chunky side, a little OTT on the hereldry. Also black and silver are tricky for me. I'm using vallejo game colour silver on these. Does anyone think those special metallics are worth the price and the smell?
I think I made a mistake with these in starting with a midtone. Starting black would have made it simpler and quicker.
Evil doctor cheese - Its not really NMM on the blood angel its metallics but with highlights and shades in NMM paints. I think I got that idea off nerdfest.

I think giving them uniforms would humanize them too much. If you are up for it, I might go for a bandoleer or utility belt though. Just because they don’t need extra hides like those soft-skins does not mean they don’t need a place to store their tech gizmos.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
that sounds about right. I'm thinking they will be a bit like the AAnn, if anyone is familiar with Alan Dean Foster's comonwealth series.
So basically a lizard race, who communicate their emotional state with gestures, bathe in warm sand and have a complex hierarchical society based on ancient ritual and law. Every AAnn knows their place in society and secretly seeks to advance it. AAnn, sounds a bit like slaan, I wonder...

Not 100% on the guns, I think the aesthetic of the eldar weapons maybe more appropriate. But I really like the idea of just bandoleers and utility belts.
29449

I toyed with the idea of eldar weapons, but felt they were too distinctive of the race. The tau stuff feels more anonymous. I might go eldar for the special/heavy weapon skink. Need to do some bitz browsing...

Yeah I agree, reptiles would not wear a "uniform " per say, may same color for the "loin cloth" and bandoliers/utility belts. Lizards have their "naughty bits" hidden inside their bodies, hard to tell male/female anyway. Now space suits though, they may use those for harsh environments.

They are kinda cute aren't they Linsay40k. I'm not sure what colour and style to use on them. Lizardmen from the future can be almost any colour... I can't decide...
Lemon yellow with bluey purple scales and red eyes? That'd look proper mad.
Green, a perrenial favourite for lizards, is right out as I get bored of it and I have more orks and dark angels to paint anyhow.
Alternatively I could do a firey orange matched with baby blue scales and black eyes.
Neither of those choices is very subtle!
Thanks for the gun suggestion llamahead I'll check it out.

Hey Weety, love the new skinks! I'm a big fan of the phaser pistols - they look far enough removed from the Tau tech to look like something new and interesting, and suit them very well. I agree that uniforms would be a little much, but maybe some armour plates or something scavenged here and there?

Linsay40k Agreed but they need more pockets gadgets and gismos b4 they're finished and properly utilitarian utility belts.

Well since your skinks have tau ish weapons, and the tau are all about assimulating anyone, maybe make them tau ish too. You could use them as count as kroot. Eventually keep going you could have a nature based 40k army of mercs.
Though I enjoyed the good old days when in my head at least the imperium was made up of all sorts. Not just cadians. Creation is a wonderous thing and in an infinite universe all is possible. Goat men with laser guns no bother, just look at the platypus.

Hello! I've been a follower of your blog for ages, but since I'm trying to forge through the DW:OK stuff myself, thought I'd make a comment on how great the skin tone is looking on your cult figures, especially the familiars. Given that they're supposed to be summoned from the warp I was thinking of trying to give mine an ethereal-sorta-vibe but had no idea how I'd achieve it. I reckon I might just copy yours!
PS just noticed that the familiar on the right is missing a claw. Mine broke in exactly the same place :(
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Yeah I should fix that. It was like that when I opened em I think.
Cool I saw your DW;OK and there pretty damn good. Might be helpful to list the paints I used although I paints em in vallejo and I'm not sure there's equivalents in citadel.
Its a base coat of old rose, wet blended broad highlights in sunny skin tone, a stippled highlight of pale skintone, heavy wash of pale grey wash in a 5:2:1 ratio with purple wash plus dark blue. After that's dry do top highlights with more sunny skintone and pale skintone ontop. And thats as far as I got but there'll be more highlights and stuff.

Nice start, Weety. Some of them do seem to be quite attached to those skulls, nearly as much as The Predator.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
A skull in the hand is worth two in the bush they say.
I've got some time to paint today so I added more to the aberants. Highlights of sky blue and then pale blue for the chitin, basic fleshtone for the claws and bony protrusions, a terracota wash on the metal, flesh wash on the transitions between bone-skin-chitin.

wehrkind; Hes not a beastman but he is a beastly man...
Cam I had to shorten all the other plumes, they looked ridiculous on these short bodies, but that one looked just ridiculous enough so I left it.
Dr H did you notice I gave one a tasteful back cloth for modesty... I feel a bit of fluff coming on:
"AAAten-SHUN!" Screamed the lieutenant and the braying herd ceased shuffling about and made a nervous attempt to straighten up. Commandant Vaskundar looked on with increasing trepidation at his assembled penal legions. Putting on a bold face he strode down the ranks "Men... MEN! I am your new commandant! You will call me SIR YES SIR and I expect TOTAL obedience, and you'd better all smarten up!" The lieutenant trotted to keep up with the longer legged man "Beggin your pardon guv... but not all the 'men' really have a good grasp of imperial. I reckon they can manage to call youse 'Bossman' But I don't fink their lips will twist round sir" Grabbing the nearest beast by the shoulders he screamed "CALL ME SIR YOU ORRIBLE LITTLE BEAST!!" The terrified beast, his eyes rolling, managed a strangulated "Ssthhhurrr ess sthur" and the lieutenant threw him to the ground.
"I see what you mean, but for emperors sake get this creature a more concealing loincloth lieutenant! Then at least I wont have to see their backsides when I'm ordering them into the fray"
"Very good sir, back cloths all round sir, you should a seen em when I started sir, naked as the day they was born, cept for all those tooth charms"
Vaskundar allowed himself a sigh. What had he done to deserve this uncouth command, maybe it was that lady commissar he had tried his moves on, maybe a commander he'd snubbed at some party, whatever, he was here to stay till death or promotion...
Nevelon I think they do but the fluff says it depends and some have sub-dermal drug implants instead... Its up to the techpriest in charge I guess.

Weets, I really like to see you getting into some GS work. I think you've got the talent for it & I know you've got the creativity. I'm looking for great things to come in the future.

Hi dakkadakka hows it hanging. The happy world of retail has been keeping me away from miniature things recently. It has been the busiest tourist season for a long time and I have to sell them all food. Dirty jobs, someones gotta do it... (I loved that show).
Gitsplitta I hope I don't disappoint. Its just like ceramics but 100% more tiny.
Today I finally finishing the genestealer hybrids, with just the leaders to go. Here is my progress on the magus:

Thanks dakka people. Its a pretty luminous orange - two layers of german orange to get a nice solid colour and then a layer of blood red mixed with wash medium. Looks like rock-candy. I'm going to add a little shade to it before its done.
Got the leader dude ready to the same level today, same orange on his coat lining. they both still need details but that'll have to wait till thursday now.

How did you do the bonesword, it looks fantastic?

Post by: weetyskemian44
Thanks all.
The Sword started white. First a thick dark purple-blue wash which was a mix of p3 blue ink, vallejo violet ink and vallejo oxford blue paint. Then I highlighted in sky blue and added several layers of yellow to the gems. Finally some very watered down p3 green ink which is really Aqua green verging on turquoise. I think maybe it still needs something no?

Well that's the lot of them. I'm going to put them up on ebay for an obscene amount of money tomorrow. Anyone care to comment on what you think they'll fetch?
In the post winging its way to me are some gnarly mechanicus cyborgs n robots, and tomorrow I'll be priming space slann, penal beastmen, chaos cultists and much more so I need the space. I put an extra shelf in the display cabinet and immediately filled it with oldhammer.

Here we go - it's a lotta money but that reflects how much work it takes to get a genestealer cult to look this good - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=182270587247 - in fact it's a bargain considering how much work it took! Hope someone's interested.

My cultists are done. I've gone for a nurgle-ish theme of dirt and grime and sores.

Hiya thanks for replyin. I love the ad-mec stuff so I'll be painting a lot of it over the next year or so. Already got a box of ruststalkers!
A little progress report, first the space slann, after long deliberation, are going to be yellow, with green scales and red eyes. Not sure what colour to do the guns yet, probably gold...
Next is a representitive sample of the progress on the penal beastmen. They need rust on their guns.
