Hiya dakka-naughts. The tattoos are nice, which was a surprise as it was a bit of a stretch painting that small. Do you ever find yourself taking a deep breath and holding it before you do a really fine bit? I find it helps with the very fine motor control. I'm gona try and make them awesome by adding highlights soon. To tired to paint that small tonight. I'm butting base colours on the lizards, the guns are going to be blue-grey NMM because its sci-fi.

The blued pearl pink is a nice look. Its a mix of vallejo metallic medium in about a 2:3 ratio with some rose pink, applied in several thin layers, then I added a little white to the mix and used that quite thickly as a highlight. Then the whole thing was doused in a blue-grey-purple wash.
Thankyou all for keeping the blog rolling with comments. As you may imagine Iceland Stores has me firmly in its frosty winter grip and there is very little time for hobbies, but lots of lovely money for presents, this year I have bought for myself a troupe of 80s chaos thugs, a regiment of 90s savage orcs with command and shamen, an old orc dreadnought missing a foot, metal night goblin regiment with 2x shamen , 2x goblin doom divers, a modern rhino, some tyrannid warriors, another box of ungors, 3 kataphron destroyers and a squad of 30k spez mrinz.
I got it all for a song because blackfriday/cybermonday seemed to have overwelmed the normal high rollers on fee-bay. After gorging all weekend on a constant stream of tempting auctions they just weren't there to catch the badly photographed joblots at 7am in the morning. Postman looked very miffed at me having carried several sacks of lead up 3 flights of stairs. Don't know when I'll get around to painting any of it but January is coming so chin up!

Very belatedly getting the joke here Dr H. I'll have to use those shield designs now for the Lulz.
January sweet january is here and I've gotten the basic scheme done on the dark angel squad. Its been ages now since I last picked up the brush. I started with watered down vallejo dark green which was a "surprisingly" good match for dark angel green. On the third coat I added some p3 armour wash for shade. I need to neaten it up in a few places and do highlights.

Thanks gitsplitta. Even with xmass out of the way I'm probably not going to get these finished for a few weeks. The cold and darkness slow me down. January apathy. I should get the fur hat and coat outa storage again.
Next to do are highlights in pastel green, eye details, insignia on the knees, metals... if I can just get out of this cosy duvet nest...

A luxurious deep green! I've got a real soft spot for the beaky helmeted models, they look great.
When I get a slow period like that, I often find it's reinvigorating to try something different - a touch of sculpting, a weird model you've been putting off for a while, or even building some terrain.

Hi all an thanks for comments!
Now scarper its a common popular misconception that cornwall is in any way sunny... but that may cut no ice with you up there in Edinburgh. I feel a little exposed up in my drafty unheated 4th floor flat overlooking the bay right now with the storm coming. But again it'll probably fall as snow where you are so I'll expect noe sympathy.
I shall take your advice and paint something odd today to mix things up.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Having lived in both, I can vouch for the fact that indeed Cornwall is sunny, for exactly 3 weeks a year, the rest of the time it rains, which is quite amusing, as when I moved to Scotland many years ago, they told me it rains all the time up here, and though not sunny, it does not rain half as much, but we do get snow, not had a good winter in a couple years now, but even this mornings inch of the white stuff, would be a show stopper in Cornwall. In many ways I envy your loft looking out over the bay.
Lovely work as always here, sorry did not comment sooner, been struggling, look forward to some weety goodness later.

Today I painted a dude I've done before - the original space marine scout. I seem to have a few of these kicking about. I've been playing a lot of borderlands so this is a vague homage to the vaulthunters and bandits of that game.

My Dad's actually from Polperro (near Looe on the south coast), so I'm certainly familiar with how drowned Cornwall gets for most of the year! Seafront flat does sound pretty jealousy inducing... And we've indeed had a wee dusting of snow here, really pretty.

I think I have a talent for it, but it is so time consuming its hard to be sure. It seems to consume all my mental energies fiddling it into the right shapes. Capes are easy though, nature of the medium works in their favour. The hard part is rolling out the green stuff flat without leaving finger prints (mine seem to show even through latex gloves) or sticking - petrolleum jelly must be used in just the right amounts. I think I ended up rolling it out with a paintpot smeared in lube.

Dr H, I was thinking of doing nova-warriors actually, which is a quarter scheme.
Valhalla The blue is vallejo sky blue. To get it that bright is all about layers. I first painted it pure white, then sky blue, then a blue wash followed by several more layers of sky blue with some white added for the highlight layers. It helps that the rest of the model is contrasting dull greys and dirty reds.

Nice work on all the mutant-like dudes.
For transfers you want a gloss surface, micro-set, transfer, micro-sol (multiple applications until conformed to the surface), varnish, matt varnish.

hmmm. Will have to look into those for next time. I muddled through as best I could - here is a WIP shot of some smurfs:

Good start. Very vibrant blue.
If you don't varnish over them now, you can micro-sol them later to get the same benefits.
Winterdyne did a good step-by-step on the use of those solutions here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/333331.page#2221241

The Dr is correct, you'll get brilliant results is you use micro-set and micro-solutions.

Hello again. They must love me at work as they keep putting me on the rota and I have had hardly anytime to paint. But I managed to squeeze some painting into evenings and produced a colour scheme for my dark eldar:
The armour is a very complicated colour. I made a metallic green with a mix of metallic medium, yellow and green ink. After several coats of that I glazed it with watered down turquoise ink. After that was dry a coat of sepia wash. Then highlights with more of the metallic green. Finally a coat of armour wash

Hi Dysartes how do. Yeah they aren't finished yet and pumping that energy coil up to max brightness is definitely going to be part of the plan.
Camkierhi The hardest part is finding peoples houses. Well most houses are easy to find, but then you will get one who lives down the third track on the left after the cattle grid, or doesn't have a house number because it fell off etc... and then you end up running late. I don't drive the vans anymore they bought these huge automatic Merc vans and I drive stick only. I just handle bagging and tagging now. Good luck!
Thanks San76. One of these days I'm gona do some imperial fists, I love that yellow.

Thankx Nevelon, Grass4hopper, gitsplitta and Dr H for positive comment.
Azazelx that's right these ones are for sale so I didn't presume to pick a colour. And actually I like em blue.
Scarper no I started with a base coat of ultramarine blue. Vanilla marines + vanilla painting style! There's a few washes after that - one big wash with a dark-blue grey and a final crack+crevice wash of armour wash, and highlights in sky blue.

I'm getting a holiday soon and I will spend some of it finishing these and the dark eldar.
Its pretty damn hot and sunny right now and I have been selling a ton of beer, ice and ice-cream. A nice thing about working in food sales is doing fridge/freezer duty in hot weather. Can't wait for that holiday, but I will miss the walk in. No aircon at home.
What do I have in the potential paint pile (ppp)?:
a rhino tank
4 old high elf swordsmen of somewhere or other
Some more 90s plastic chaos marines
Hoverboard dark eldar dudes
a regiment of plastic halberdiers/spearmen/swordsmen
In the stripper are many 90s imperial guard mostly mordian iron guard and catachan jungle dudes along with ecclesiastical types and a leman russ.
This seems a little poor in choice so I'm going to go buy more stuff immediately.

Yes - a better look at the flag - It is rather good. I'll get on that dreckly Automatically Appended Next Post: What was I supposed to be doing? Oh yes a photo of the flag... while I get round to that here is a dreadnought I finished yesterday, one of the really old but still recognizable as a dread ones, solid metal so it weighs a tonne. This one was found at the car boot sale lagged in paint. Whilst stripping it its leg fell off and I re-posed it slightly to give it a lil' swagger.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I should put some grass on the base before I call this finished, it looks a little empty. Automatically Appended Next Post: Now that flag - I got two old transfers of a hand in a circle from the 80s, unfortunately they were different colours so I had to heavily overpaint the second side.

Thanks Azazelx. It's a classic old chunk of metal. I hand painted all the symbols! Well except the right hand scroll which is some mars techpriest transfer cut in half upside-down. Actually I have some modeling dilemmas if anyone feels like shoving their oar in. I'm making some modernish fantasy models which I'll probably sell and I'm wondering whether to do them old fashioned regiment style on square bases or put them on larger rounds in the new style?
Dilemma two; picked up a very unusual space marine squad with special metal pads, packs and guns - they could be imperial fists or crimson fists? They are all covered in fists anyway. Also ten models but no heavy weapon? why would someone want to do that? I reckon I can hunt down a lascannon or heavy bolter to spice them up.

Great job as usual Weets! I love the DE, are those 3rd edition DE? Lovely!
I'm excited to see your Old Guard Stuff! I'm 75% of my way through my quest of having one of each pose of the old Guardsmen. I also have one minty in-box, old-school Leman Russ kit I've been saving for last. The old kit is far superior to the new one.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
@Dsteingass hell no - nobody likes the 3rd edition dark eldar. I could snap a whole army up real cheap but I don't like them either - the newer ones are much better. I always usually do older stuff but not dark eldar they are shonky looking.
I have one of the older russes too - sadly missing the side sponsons - I think that was a think once - a cheaper leaman with no side sponsons. Looking forward to seeing the mordians out of the stripper - catachans are already stripped so keep your eye out for them.
Actually for my very very next project it looks like I'm doing a ton of rogue trader eldar which I came across whilst tidying, but we'll see, holidays soon.

Post by: Azazelx
I feel you, Weety. Painting on that sarcophagus scroll in particular is a pain in the backside. Much moreso than others of the same size. Chapter icons look great as well, and at actual size I doubt you'd be able to tell without looking really closely.
For the fantasy models, I'd go round. Not because it's my own preference for fantasy, or any particular love for AoS, but it's the new, current, marketed, pushed thing. All those Start Collecting boxes have round bases, after all - and if anyone wants to play Oldhammer/8th/9th Age they're already used to rebasing models that they eBay. AoS is where the new players are, and also the ones who are more likely ( IMO) want to buy and immediately play without needing to work on the models.
Also, games like Frostgrave, etc are base-agnostic, and a lot of people I've seen blogging it seem to prefer rounds purely on the aesthetics.
The Fists you speak of sound like this upgrade pack.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Crimson-Fists-Tactical-Squad-Upgrade-Pack
Paint them yellow or blue - the icons are the same so go with the one you prefer/feel will sell better. If it's a full 10-man squad, I cant think of why they'd lack their heavy, unless the seller decided against Fists but decided to keep the lascannon model, etc.... The new DE are SO Much nicer. I've still got a bunch of the 3e ones. I plan to (eventually) build them using spare parts from my modern DE replacing a lot of heads, arms and weapons. So using the bodies as a place to get use from my modern spare parts, basically.

Post by: dsteingass
I'm not adding sponsons to my Armored Division.
In reality, you just want the battlecannons shooting and not moving much, The Infantry and AP stuff is usually in a line near it to keep everyone away.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Thanks for the advice. I think I will go round. Also I might think of them as a warband rather than a regiment and give some bows, some clubs, some spears? I think that is a thing now maybe.
Thanks dsteingass I'm reassured about my leaman's adequacy.
I think I'm keeping the 90s imperial guard so I'm going to need more display space. The cabinet is one of those with many notches, so I just need the right size piece of wood.

Post by: dsteingass
@lindsay Nostalgia, perhaps. The Leman Russ was designed in 1995 (retailed for $30), it had the larger, more comical lascannon and the Original accessory sprue (Hunter-killer missile in a big box launcher, spikey searchlight, etc.), but it was Nottingham Plastic, so it was the light grey plastic that got somewhat brittle over time. . It was redesigned with a different Lascannon and a completely new Accessory Sprue around 2000ish (Dark Grey Plastic era beginning) , and when 6th Edition Apocalypse (I think) dropped, they redesigned the entire kit to fit on fewer sprues, saving the company money, charging you the more, and removing most of the cool curves and details and replacing them with Space Mariney-angles.
The new Chimera kit is far inferior to the old Chimera Kit on detail though, although easier to build (the Old Chimera Kit was 5 Sprues + the Accessory Sprue, the new Chimera Kit is only 2 sprues, 80% of the box you buy is air.
@weets Orks Look Great! Even without the Goblin Green bases. I was digging through a box of shame yesterday and I found two old RT-era Imperial Army officer minis and a Standard Bearer, where they wore Roman-esque helmets.
